Vincenzo - Gwak Huisu
The thing I love the most about Vincenzo is the chemistry between every character and not only the main leads. These are some of my favorite relationships which are just not talked about enough. I'm here cheering them on.
I realize it's two years late but I just love them so much.

The Forbidden Marriage. 10
Story: 10
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10❤️🔥
Comparable to: Mr. Queen (kdrama) ; Alchemy of Souls (kdrama); Love in the Moonlight (kdrama)
This is hands down one of my top favorite series so far of the year. It starts out strong and ends on a very strong note. It really does have everything. A lot of humor especially in the beginning that gradually spins into a mix of drama with romance and a dash of suspense. It’s for me a perfect formula. There’s never a dull moment throughout especially having just the right amount of episodes, a total of 12. The chemistry among the whole cast is oofing amazing, especially the standout chemistry between the leading main characters. Definitely definitely recommend, especially for those who haven’t watched it yet. I yelled at myself for not watching it sooner.

What are your favorite love stories from dramas? Chinese or Korean. The OTPs that slayed you?
yay! i love love!! SPOILERS below!
--
li zi wei / huang yu xuan, someday or one day. taiwanese drama.
boy meets girl. boy dies. girl time travels about 20 years into the past and meets boy's doppelganger, except he's older than he should be in 1998. turns out boy is ALSO a time traveler, and he waited years to be reunited with the girl in her original timeline after meeting her in 1998 😭. boy still dies. girl goes to correct the timeline again. in order for the boy and the girl's friends to survive, they have to erase the timeline where they meet, and all their memories together, and they choose to do so. it's implied the boy will still meet the girl someday, one day 😭😭😭. a follow up movie (with the same cast!) is going to be released soon, but the original drama is perfect on its own and their story hits all the best bittersweet notes.
also their theme song kills me/watch for a highlight reel:

dongfang qingcang and xiao lanhua, love between fairy and devil. chinese drama
this story is like someone took all my favorite fanfics from when i was 14 and injected it straight into my veins!! xiao lanhua is an unimportant orchid fairy who accidentally frees the leader of the moon tribe (the fairies' #1 enemy), certified big bad and girlboss dongfang qingcang, who has sealed away his emotions for a power boost. over time, the two of them grow closer and understand one another better and if you're someone who likes "i'll burn the world down for 1 person" with notes of devil/jesus or hades/persephone this is 100% absolutely your ship.
like, the way we all went absolutely feral during this scene:
youtube
--
do hyun soo/cha ji won, flower of evil. korean drama
idek where to begin with these two, but ugh. ugh!! ugh!!!! the way they killed me over 16 episodes! definitely an unconventional couple, do hyun soo is a suspected serial killer who's been on the run for over 15 years, and cha ji won is his wife and also a detective recently assigned to hunt him down. their story is just such a raw and lovely look at trauma's effects on people and they're so ride or die for one another and their daughter. it's wonderful to see a love story about a long-term couple, as well.
youtube
--
yu sifeng/chu xuanji, love and redemption. chinese drama
THE ship for you if you like inverted gender dynamics, masochism tangos, and 10 lifetimes' worth of pining and star-crossed lovers. thousands of years ago, there was a god of war who was punished to live 10 lifetimes on earth so she could unlearn her hatred at heaven. chu xuanji is her 10th and final mortal incarnation, a girl who can't understand the 6 senses and lives with her father's martial arts sect, although she can't practice martial arts or cultivation herself. sifeng is a member of a rival sect, a sect that forbids love, marriage, or children from its members. it's revealed that sifeng has loved and followed xuanji through 9 previous lifetimes that all ended violently for him, and this is their last chance to break the cycle/get their happily ever after /;3;/
what i love most about this one is that it flips the script on gender dynamics-- sifeng is a martyr for love and xuanji is the overpowered one who struggles to understand her feelings. here's one of my favorite scenes where xuanji reveals her hidden powers to save sifeng from being whipped to death

sung deok sun/choi taek, reply 1988. korean drama.
the other love stories on this list are all fantasy-based or have extraordinary circumstances, so i figured for this last one i would pick a love story that's just so wonderfully normal and grounded. a lot of people got second-lead syndrome from this series, but i am empathetically not one of them!!
deok sun and taek are childhood friends and neighbors who grew up together. it's evident early on in the series that taek loves deok sun, and he's always honest about his feelings, but it takes deok sun a little longer to realize she's in love with taek. what i love about this ship is that it's really quiet-- we see them fall in love with small moments and through their actions/behaviors vs. large, grand confessions (although we get a great confessional moment near the end of the drama too!!). there's also such a great balance between birds of a feather and being complimentary toward one another.
youtube
some other favorites:
lan tian ye/su can can, wait my youth (chinese drama)
dan oh/haru, extraordinary you (korean drama)
lee jung in/yoo ji ho, one spring night (korean drama)
yoon sae boem/jung yi hyun, happiness (korean drama)
ha moon so/lee kang do, just between lovers (korean drama)
sung shi won/yoon yoon jae, reply 1997 (korean drama)
kang dong gu/han yoon nah ft. sol, welcome to waikiki (korean drama)

[INTERVIEW] W Korea (January 2013)
Tumblr media
The album “Again, On the Road” is Choi Baek-ho's first trip in 12 years. The melody added by young musicians such as guitarist Park Joo-won, jazz vocalist MALO and harmonica player Jeon Je-deok is also wonderful, but the most impressive thing is the power of vocals like sighs and whispers. At one point, Choi Baek-ho sings like a young man in his 60s with a light trembling voice that has fresh and stubborn energy that does not seem to wane no matter how much time passes. On the other hand, IU is a 20-year-old who conveys deep emotions with a young face. When she played her guitar on stage and sang “About Romance”, the familiar song took on a new look. The two of them who see each other as a junior he has been keeping an eye on and a senior whom she respects, sat side by side. The two musicians who have an age gap of more than 40 years also had things in common. Choi Baek-ho and IU confessed that music is not everything to them.
The two of you have met before, right? I heard that IU got an autograph for her father, who is a fan of Choi Baek-ho, in the waiting room of a broadcasting station.
IU: When my father and I went for karaoke together, I sang ‘About Romance’ especially often. He likes ‘My Heart Has Lost Its Way’ too. Unlike my peers, I have listened to sunbaenim’s music a lot from a young age.
You sang ‘About Romance’ at your concert last summer, right? It's probably not an easy feat for a 20-year-old female musician.
IU: I don't think I've tried to think about the lyrics (Note: what the lyrics mean) until then. I read them carefully while preparing for my concert, but I couldn't understand anything. The feelings in the song… So it was very tough. Honestly, I still don't understand everything.
CBH: Of course.
IU: Yes. It's really tough... When I was young, I just listened to it thinking that it was good.
Choi Baek-ho mentioned IU several times as a junior musician that he has been keeping an eye on. What do you think makes her special?
CBH: Actually, I don't really know IU's songs. I just listen to some of her music when I’m free. But I was surprised to hear her sing Lee Moon-sae's ‘First Love’ while playing the guitar. It’s the same for ‘About Romance’ too, but people in their 30s and 40s can relate better to the lyrics, but she managed to pull it off cleverly. It's nice to have such a young… no, rather than young, a little singer who is good. Songs these days are too commercialized and seem to be biased (Note: swayed by company interests). We need more people who are enthusiastic about music. Besides, I also like that she is a singer-songwriter.
For the first time in your new album, “Again, On the Road”, you received and sang songs by junior musicians. I think there must have been a reason why you tried doing this.
CBH: The songs I make have become so commonplace. I always wanted to break away from them and I got an opportunity to do that, so I grabbed hold of it.
You consider the lyrics so important that you write the lyrics first and add the melody to them. What is your favorite part of the lyrics written by your junior?
CBH: I love the second verse of ‘On the Road’. ‘My laughter flies into the blue sky / My youth, redder than flower petals, passes by.’ I still feel emotional when I sing this part.
IU is also preparing for her album. What's your biggest music-related concern these days?
IU: I’m ambitious to include many of my self-composed songs. But as I write my songs, I start to realise that I'm not good enough. The separate parts may sound okay, but if I put them together and listen to it as a whole, I’ll be like, ‘This sounds weird…?’ I think I still have a long way to go, but I don't want to give up composing songs. So I encounter problems when coordinating with my company. The concept of an album is important too, right? It's hard to stick to only what I think.
CBH: It's like that when you write a song. I thought it was amazing when I wrote it at night, but it's terrible when I listen to it in the morning.
IU: Haha, that's right. Everything sounds great at night.
CBH: It’s right for you to think that way. It’s problematic if you get narcissistic in the morning over what you wrote the night before.
What were you troubled about when you were IU’s age at 20 years old?
CBH: It was so hard for me around that time. My mother passed away when I was 20. So I just went to the army. But I realized when I got older that those hard and difficult times were very precious times in my life. Musicians need to go through some hard times. Yet you’re not able to go around looking for such things on purpose.
May I ask why you say so?
CBH: Our human experiences all get expressed in music. I don't think you can write lyrics or melodies that strike a chord in people's hearts without going through a hard time yourself.
You are more like a musician I like as a fan rather than a senior that juniors formally respect. I think your voice is powerful and special.
CBH: I don't do anything special to maintain my vocal chords, but I think my voice tone is well-preserved. Actually, I feel my voice is better now than when I was young. I don't know if it's just self-hypnosis. But sometimes I’m tired of listening to my own voice. As I don't want to listen to the songs I sang, I may even stop listening to my own albums for a few months.
What’s the reason?
CBH: I don't know. There are times like that occasionally.
In a previous interview, you said that music is not everything to you in life. What you said left an impression on me.
IU: Wow.
CBH: I don't know if it's just the case for me. I don't want to be tied to just one thing. I actually thought about quitting being a singer too. If someone comes and tells me to stop singing, I might even go ‘Okay!’ and quit. (Wouldn't it still be an important part of your life?) It's a really important part, of course. It's like family to me. My wife, daughter and music are all living together with me.
IU: I was surprised just now, because I said something similar before too. Music isn't everything to me. But I thought I'd get in trouble if I said this out loud. I thought a lot about whether people would think I’m being arrogant or crazy. But no matter how hard I thought about it, music isn't everything to me. There are many other things that are important to me. That's why my fans say they're upset. Since I’m the kind to say that if I don't like music anymore at some point, I might do something else.
Choi Baekho compared music to family. What about you, IU?
IU: It's a kind of escape from reality to me. Watching a movie or reading a book is an experience that lets you immerse yourself in the story for a brief period of time. You can run away from reality for a while when you make music, listen to it, or sing it. But on the other hand, I’m someone who’s too practical to live in pursuit of only music or my ideals. I think that's why I think it can't be everything to me. When I was a rookie, my company CEO asked me, ‘Are you tired?’ I said, ‘It's fun though.’ He told me that professionals shouldn't find it fun and that they should always be suffering instead. So I answered like this. ‘Oh, then I'll just be an amateur.’ Honestly, I still feel the same way. If suffering is being a professional, I just want to remain just as an amateur.
CBH: This is what I think. Even if you're singing a sad song, you have to enjoy yourself while singing it. I mean, even though I say I can leave music at any time, eventually, I won’t be able to cast it aside even when I grow old. I think it’s the same for IU.
Choi Baek-ho is someone who wants to do many things and actually does many things too. I heard you drew illustrations and held an exhibition and wrote a movie scenario too. There are stories about unknown singers and I heard you completed writing an SF (science fiction) film too.
CBH: Haha, SF is really awesome.
I was so curious about that. What kind of story would Choi Baekho write?
CBH: It's about the Earth becoming uninhabitable and everyone leaves for a new star. Unbelievable right?
IU: Hahaha.
CBH: My daughter does movies. So I showed it to her once, but she said it can’t be done because it would cost a lot of money.
I’ll ask IU a question then. What would you choose to do if you had to do something else because music suddenly became boring to you?
IU: I want to cook. I have a lot of downtime these days, but I don't have any hobbies. I was hungry and there was no one at home, so I found a recipe by myself and cooked a meal. I was so amazed by the taste. Well, it tasted like food? After that, I made bulgogi, stew, and spaghetti... It's so fun. I think it's my first time finding something to spend time doing other than music.
In a way, music has become an enjoyable kind of ‘work’ for you. You might need other things that are enjoyable besides music.
CBH: But it’s because you already have music, so other things are enjoyable. Nothing would have been enjoyable without music.
[truncated question about CBH’s album]
What if you were to do a remake of one of your released songs when you turn 60?
IU: For a start, I don't think it can be ‘Good Day’, haha. I don’t think ‘You and I’ would work either. I want to sing my own (Note: self-composed) songs. I would like to sing ‘Peach’ and ‘A Lost Puppy’ with a more professional arrangement. I would be able to make up for my shortcomings then, right?
CBH: Yeah, I've heard of ‘Peach’.
IU: Really? Thank you.
If I dare to make a guess, for most people, when they are in their 60s, they are more interested in maintaining their position than taking on a new challenge. I think it's an exceptional case that you are maintaining such energy at the age of sixty-two.
CBH: I still don't know how much I have in me. I don’t even get the feeling like, ‘Let's rest since we’ve come this far.’ I still have new thoughts everyday and no lingering feelings about what has gone by. I really like that. I want to make movies. I want to work hard to draw and I'm positive, hopeful and I like challenges. That's why people close to me have a hard time. (laughs). Bae Chulsoo (Note: Former singer) is always telling me this. Hey, stop earning money now. But that's why I'm enjoying myself. I think I'm still very curious.
You have a concert in January, right?
CBH: It's a performance that focuses on the songs in my new album. I learned a lot while preparing for this album with my juniors. They are more like great music teachers than my juniors. It will be an opportunity to show everyone my results from studying.
Is there anything you're curious about, regarding Choi Baekho?
IU: Oh, I really want to ask you a question.
CBH: What is ‘balloon flower whisky’? (Note: ‘Balloon flower whisky’ is in the lyrics of ‘About Romance’ which IU covered at her concert.)
IU: Haha, no. I know what balloon flower whisky is now. Why is a broken heart so sweet? In the lyrics of ‘About Romance’, I really couldn't understand the part ‘Now, at this age / there's no need for sweetness’. I think I asked all the adults around me while practicing. I wonder if my broken heart becomes sweeter as I get older.
CBH: A young man's broken heart is bitter of course, but he can't turn back time, when he gets older.
IU: Oh...
CBH: When we get old, we don't experience broken hearts. So even the painful memories of our youth feel sweet.
I think Choi Baek-ho also has something to say to his junior, IU. What should she bear in mind in order to age well as a musician?
CBH: I don't want talented people to be swayed by anything other than music. You'll experience many things in your life and sometimes you'll face great difficulties, but you shouldn't miss what’s really important because of that. As a good musician, I hope you can protect your current music.

“The organization of the Unification Church is so systematic that one thinks of communists.” – Professor Choi
Tumblr media
▲ The Seoul headquarters church was purchased in 1955
Professor Choi Syn-deok joined the Unification Church in 1954.
Transactions of the Royal Asiatic Society, Korea Branch No. 43 (1967)
The author Choi Syn-deok (Ch’oe Sin-dok, 崔信德  1921-2016) was an Associate Professor of Sociology at Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul. She received her undergraduate education in Korea at Ewha and did graduate work in social science at the University of Chicago where she received an M.A. degree in 1957. After her return she served as Advisor in the Education Division of USOM, and in 1961 accepted an assistant professorship at Tanguk University. In 1963 she joined the faculty of Ewha University. Professor Choi has written books and reports on Korean-American subjects and on the dating attitudes of Korean college students. She is now engaged in an anthropological study of Korean village life. She was once an active member of the Tong-il [Unification] church, [she had joined in 1954] and was closely associated with Moon Sun-myung.
[She was married in 1942 and had four children before the Korean War. Her husband was Dr. Soo Jang Joo, M.D. She lost her husband when he was taken captive by the North Korean Army in 1950. Dr. Douglas DM Joo, former president of The Washington Times, is her son.]

...
II. Organization of the Church
The organization of the Tong-il [Unification] church is so systematic that one thinks of communists. They pose as “heavenly communists.” Their headquarters is located in Seoul. Mr. Eu Hyo-won is the executive head of the Holy Spirit Association. Under his leadership is: (1) The administrative section, which deals with general affairs, cultural affairs, rural districts, and business affairs; (2) the student section, which includes departments for middle school students, high school students, young children, and Sunday school students; and the national network. There are provincial heads, “Kun” or district heads, “Myon” or sub-district heads, “Li” or village heads, and individual evangelists. Thus the Tong-il faith has been spread throughout the country to every small village.
Seoul is on the provincial level, and its organization is as follows: it consists of three districts. The first district is the Youth Division, the second district is the Men’s Division, and the third district is the Women’s Division. The Youth Division in turn is subdivided into two areas, a girls, division and a boys, division. Then each sub-division is divided into three groups. For the boys, [page 105] Seoul National University students take the lead, and for the girls Ewha University students take the lead. The second and the third districts are divided into three areas respectively, and each of these areas is subdivided into three groups. One group consists of about twelve persons. One area consists of 36 persons and one district consists of 108.
Special emphasis is put on youth in the Tong-il [Unification] Church. They don’t expect much from those above forty. Old people over forty, they think, should regard themselves as the sacrifices offered on the altar to bring the kingdom of heaven on earth through Mr. Moon.
There is a communication system formed between the members so that they can act immediately in matters which concern them all, such as passing on information, acting on Moon’s direction or responding to some urgent notice by the church. Each group in its respective district has its own weekly meeting, and has many activities besides studying their principles.
Training Meetings for Orientation
They have several peculiar practices of their own: In order to provide many evangelists for the church, they frequently hold training meetings. A national meeting is usually held for forty days. During this period they have the participants master their principles and do many drills. They lodge them together for that period, as in the military service, so that they can learn to endure all the difficulties they will have to face, mentally as well as physically, while doing their evangelistic work.
Evangelistic Activity. They set aside special evangelistic periods for organized proselytizing, twice a year. The first term is in the summer for forty days from July 20 to the end of August, and the other is in the winter for forty days from December to the end of January. Nearly all members of the Seoul church who can read the Korean alphabet participate in this activity. Their destinations are settled by drawing lots. All the costs for this evangelistic work are borne by the participants, individually.  [page106]  When they go out they teach the children the Korean alphabet and mathematics as well as their church principles. They work hard with the farmers and help the villagers in any way they can. Because they are not a financial drain on the farmers, but help them with sincerity, many of them are welcomed by the rural administrators as well as by the people. Also, there are some over-seer preachers who go around to advise and assist the evangelists in their work. They associate with the village administrators, such as Yi-chang, and the head of the police station, winning their cooperation. The Tong-il Church is growing more rapidly in the rural areas than in Seoul.
The Church Guard. The Tong-il Church where Moon lives is guarded by two believers every night. They do not sleep. Each of the three districts takes the responsibility of guarding the church for ten days each. The reason for the guard, so they are taught, is to defend this sacred Church from Satan who already controls the rest of the world, and who, liking darkness, is more likely to come at night.

On Moon’s Relationships with the Choi Family
Excerpts from The Choi Family Entanglements, recently updated on May 13, 2023
Tumblr media
▲ Pictured: These are the only known photos of Choi Seon-gil (also written as Sun-kil Choi) and Sun Myung Moon together. They were taken around early 1955 by Eu Hyo-min, probably in Seoul. He explained that Choi had challenged her husband when she caught him having sex with two women.
From a Japanese article: “It is complicated. This is the part that has been erased from the history of the Unification Church.
Sun Myung Moon’s first wife was Choi Seon-gil LINK
She was the niece of Choi Seong-mo (see obituary below)
Choi Seon-gil’s uncle was Choi Seong-mo
He was the brother of Choi Seon-gil’s father.
Choi Seong-mo’s wife was Lee Duk-sam. [He married Lee when he was 29. Lee left Choi to follow Sun Myung Moon.]
Choi Seong-mo’s eldest daughter: Choi Soon-shil [She arrested for group sex in Moon’s church in July 1955.] LINK
Choi Seong-mo’s second daughter: Choi Soon-wha LINK [She is the mother of Sam Park, born in 1966, fathered by Sun Myung Moon.]
Choi Seong-mo’s eldest son: Choi Soon-yeong LINK [He inherited the chaebol/business]
Choi Seong-mo’s second son: Choi Soon-kwang
Choi Seong-mo’s third son: Choi Soon-kil
I can understand the feelings of Mr. Choi Seong-mo, who was the husband of Mrs. Lee Duk-sam. He pushed the police to investigate Teacher Moon, and he wanted to beat the Unification Church. At first I thought Mr. Choi Seong-mo hated Teacher Moon because Moon married Choi Seon-gil, who was Mr. Choi’s niece. But apparently he was indignant about the relationship between his wife and Teacher Moon. That is why he called Teacher Moon ‘the devil’.
It’s become a mess.”
[One of the sons, either Soon-kwang or Soon-kil, was active against Sun Myung Moon, but was heavily persecuted by the organization.]
Tumblr media
▲ Pictured: Oh Yeong-choon is standing on the right, next to Hak Ja Han and her mother Hong Soon-ae. Oh was involved in the selection of Hak Jan Han as the wife of Sun Myung Moon. This photograph was taken at around the time of that selection. Oh raised money to get Moon out of jail in 1955, following the Ewha Womans University sex scandal. LINK
Oh Yeong-choon witnessed to Lee Duk-sam in Busan. After Lee Duk-sam joined, she brought her two daughters, Choi Soon-shil and Choi Soon-wha, into the UC. Choi Soon-yeong who was younger resisted recuitment, even though he was under pressure from his mother to join. Moon took the daughters to Seoul to be with him in the fall of 1953. It has been reported that he “restored” the two of them in a small hotel near the Seoul train station. Soon-shil went to Yonsei University and Soon-wha to Ewha Womans University. In 1964 Soon-wha traveled to Washington, DC, to go to university there. She wanted to get away from Moon. In 1965, during his first world tour, Moon spent three months in DC having sex with Soon-wha, aka Annie. He did not leave the US until he knew she was pregnant. Sam Park was born on January 28, 1966.

Moon Chae-won woke up after being stabbed with a weapon..
Tumblr media
Moon Chae-won of 'Bob' woke up.
On the afternoon of the 27th, in the SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Beopjeon', the scene of Moon Chae-won, who was hospitalized after being hit by a weapon, regained consciousness was broadcast.
On this day, Eun-yong (Lee Seon-gyun), who handed over the information to Hong Hanna (Kim Hye-hwa), started a reverse operation, saying that he would hit short sellers with grass. When Eun-yong thought about Chairman Myeong's (Kim Hong-pa) choice, Hanna Hong said, "I'm sure," and when asked about Jang Tae-chun (Kang Yoo-seok), she said, "I couldn't contact him for a while, but he borrowed money a few days ago."
Hearing from Nam (Choi Deok-moon) that Kim Seong-tae's (Lee Geon-myung) gang seems to be dealing drugs, Jang Tae-chun set foot in a gambling house.
While investigating Yoo Chang-hae undercover, the police found Jang Tae-choon following him.
