Not related to sampling but related to the general convo happening and something I referenced lol—

One of the things that first dialed me in to the fact that Pete’s book was supposed to have a double meaning was the usage of the word “negroes” in it twice. I read it in 2013 and I was only like 14 and was a short-term, casual FOB fan so I wasn’t aware he was biracial. A couple other times he references specifically black people were really noticeable in the prose. 

It really caught me off guard because I figured he wouldn’t just be throwing that word around for no reason, and along with the Freudian stuff being clearly strange kind of kept me reading the book over and over and trying to figure it out. 

One of the times is referencing Charley Pride:  (This is from the dissertation)

There are many more of these little metaphors throughout Gray, and each of them have special meanings. Wentz’s self-insert mentions— in extra-special parentheses— that his girlfriend decided that if he were a book, he’d be “(The Nashville Sound: Bright Lights and Country Music, 1970, featuring… Charley Pride, ‘the first Negroe Country star’);” Pete Wentz is biracial, with Jamaican heritage, and became more or less the face of the white-dominated genre of pop-punk and emo rock. 

But there’s another one too:

“I drop a quarter in the jukebox, summon the ghosts of ducktailed rockabilly cats and tousled-haired teen idols, sweet-voiced doo-wop singers and yelping young Negroes with wild pompadours. They were the kings of their era, the Imperials and the Belmonts, the Diamonds and the Del-Vikings. They were the savages of the decade, pounding the piano, and thumping the upright bass. Pulling pints of whiskey from their back pockets. Groping girls. Having wild times.”

I did talk about the Charley Pride thing obviously but not the Diamonds/Del Vikings one, there was a LOT I could not get into in the dissertation because of the sheer magnitude of it and I only noticed the Diamonds/Del-Vikings thing when it was essentially finished and didn’t know how to work it back in, which was probably a failure on my part haha. I also was struggling to parse out the exact specifics with the Belmonts and Imperials but it’s a similar gist I think

But anyway, the Del-Vikings were known for being a successfully mixed-race doo-wop group when that was really rare cause it was the 50s, and by contrast the Diamonds were super racist and met at a literal minstrel show, and performed a lot of covers by black artists who were being exploited by-and-large by the music industry which is what tangentially connects this back to the conversation happening on yogurt.edu currently 

Anyway for anyone who has not read my 40 page dissertation about Pete’s book no one but me likes (can’t blame you if you haven’t), I argue it has a secret double meaning as satire but is also meant to be partially authentic and he passed it off as bad on purpose to hide the double meaning and a lot of factual elements of the book. So like it could be interpreted as either a mockery /satire of the main character which is supposed to be like how people view him and “emo” guys / rock stars in general, or authentic and genuine and serious depending on how you look at it.

SO ANYWAY, I feel like by including that word twice and also invoking these two wistful and idolizing images of very different types of 50s acts, it’s playing into that double meaning thing by sort of ambiguously casting the narrator as someone who is biracial/black and is pointing out black people he sees because he is biracial/black, or someone who is not that and is not a good person. 

But on the 5D chess level the entire book operates on where the only people who would be able to recognize the entire subtext are either incredibly dedicated to figuring it out or are incredibly knowledgeable about rock music 

There were a lot of other references to bands and some other stuff that I felt like were probably saying something (Lynyrd Skynyrd in particular had some stuff to do with like death and planes and dying young) but I felt like some of it was kind of going over my head a bit and it was already 40 pages haha 

The amount of effort and skill that went into pulling this book off is truly mind boggling to me and I do strongly feel the interpretation I had of the Diamonds/Del-Vikings thing was intentional, but I didn’t want to write it badly and come across as insensitive or offensive, which may have been another failure on my part especially since it would have been awkward to put back in to the finished essay anyway

Ohio Esports: Changing the Game for Students in the Valley

Not too long ago, playing video games consisted of powering up your Atari, grabbing a joystick and shooting space aliens trying to attack your ship. Eventually, Nintendo came along and this process evolved into using two buttons to guide a plumber through harrowing lands in his quest to save the princess. If you were lucky, you had a second controller so your best friend could play. No groups. No internet. No headphones. In the years that followed, video games changed drastically, switching from side-scrolling quests to interactive, story-driven movies and contests. The advent of the internet allowed for online play, where gamers could compete against each other in different types of matches. It wasn’t long after that people discovered they could form leagues for competitive play. That’s when gaming competitions started popping up. StarCraft, Warcraft III, and, of course, Madden, seemed the most popular. Esports was born. And the state of Ohio loves it. Local high school students are now participating in Esports. In 2023, the Ohio High School Athletic Association officially partnered with Esports Ohio, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing an Esports league for high school students. While face-to-face video game competitions have been around since 1981, it wasn’t until 2000 that they fully evolved into the internet-based mass competitions we know today. These organized multiplayer competitions, played individually or by teams, grew tremendously since then; not only in participation but in the amount of media attention they received, mainly because the grand prize could go as high as $1 million. Seeing this opportunity, a group of educators formed Esports Ohio six years ago. At the start, they had 12 high school teams. This year, they have 803 rosters, 5,015 players and 294 schools. “We feel that we will continue to add more players in teams,” said Esports Ohio President Jacob Gebers. “We hope to have over 350 schools in the next 5 years.” The partnership has been a win-win for both organizations. Students who may not be interested in contact sports now have the opportunity to compete in an activity more suited to their interests. OSHAA can help the organization grow. “OHSAA has a long history of high school sports and have (sic) connections throughout the state,” Gebers said. “They are able to help promote to schools our league and what we can do while we can still control the logistics. We are also able to hand out OHSAA trophies to winning teams which is a fantastic accomplishment.” Gebers said Esports Ohio was founded to give students the ability to play other schools in Ohio and build upon existing rivalries. Video gaming obviously was important to the Esports Ohio founders. But why? Gebers said that despite the negative connotations video games often receive, the benefits of playing in a team setting can have a positive impact. “I am a gamer when I have the time. I really like the way it forces people to have teamwork and also giving an outlet for those that may not be involved in other activities. Learning how to work together with other students is a long-life lesson,” Gebers explaiend. “This also includes learning how to communicate efficiently as well as problem solving.” Now, games like Overwatch, Fortnite, League of Legends, Super Smash Brothers, chess, baseball and even Just Dance are in the mix. Locally, the sport is growing, with schools like St. John Central Academy, Belmont Harrison Career Center, Buckeye Local High School, Buckeye Trail High School, Caldwell High School, Cambridge High School, Conotton Valley High School and East Liverpool boasting programs, according to the Ohio Esports website. Sea Princesses English Voice Actors - Where are they now?

You can manipulate the world and use AI that's as close to real life all you want, you'll never get all the original actors and voice actors of your favourite shows back to reprise their roles on something as large of a scale as Kisekae Insights.

The voice actors who worked on Sea Princesses are rather unknown outside of Australia and some of them have moved on to different roles, both in and out of the industry. Sure, I can say that everyone came back to reprise their characters in my personal project, but where are they now in real life? Let's take a look at where the voice actors of Sea Princesses are now, nearly 20 years after the first book was released in Brazil.

For brevity, I won't be covering any credited voice actors who are still predominately acting in Australia. Bolded roles are confirmed while italicised roles are speculated through observation and/or deduction.

Isabella Dunwill – Polvina

Known for her role as Geri Hallett in the soap opera Neighbours, Isabella Dunwill would voice Amy in the 2011 3D revival of Bananas in Pyjamas. In 2016, she would become the manager of the Melbourne campus of her alma mater, the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). Most recently in 2020, she participated in Miss Chess' Christmas song, Happy Jolly Very Extra Merry Christmas, released following the second lockdown in Melbourne.

Katherine Beck – Ester

Credited as Katherine Cohn and not to be mistaken for Australian actress Kathryn Beck (a mistake I made way too many times in the early days of my personal project), Ester was Katherine Beck's first voice role in Australia. She would continue to be featured as a voice actress in other Australian cartoons and advertisements over the coming years. Katherine Beck currently works as an American accent voice coach and also hosts two podcasts, namely The All American Actor's Podcast and The Voice of Your Brand.

Paige Walker – Tubarina

Like Katherine Beck, Paige Walker currently works as an American accent voice coach, though she has performed as an aerialist in various circuses. Tubarina was Paige Walker's only voice role. She has recently appeared as a guest on the Two Unemployed Actors podcast with host Max Belmonte.

Matthew Whittet – Hugo

Although Matthew Whittet continues to be featured as an actor in Australian productions, he has worked extensively in theare and has also written some productions of his own as well, including Girl Asleep and two episodes of the 2022 Netflix reboot of the Australian soap opera Heartbreak High. He also voiced Charlie the Monkey in the 2011 3D revival of Bananas in Pyjamas.

Shannon Murphy – Tata

As cited in her interview with Matthew Eles of Cinema Australia, Tata was Shannon Murphy's only voice role that she took up while studying to be a director at NIDA; a friend asked her if she wanted to be on Sea Princesses since she still had a bit of an American accent after coming back from the US. Shannon Murphy predominately works as a director on various Australian productions.

(there was also the yogurt incident of 2020 with her then-husband, Dan Wyllie who voiced Marcello, which he was found not guilty of and Murphy was found to not be "an impressive witness". Aussie Amber Heard much?)

Jacqui Lofgren – Leia, Delfi, Lia

Jacqui Lofgren has had no other acting or voice roles before or after Sea Princesses. Having practiced in physie (an Australian dance style combining ballet, aerobics, gymnastics, contemporary and modern jazz) since the age of 4, Jacqui Lofgren currently teaches at North Sydney Physie & Dance. In 2015, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (Primary) from Macquarie University.

Meaghan Davies – Elektra, Angelica (S1)

While she may not necessarily be a "star talent" as Liamasterink described her, Meaghan Davies has been in productions between Australia and the US. She has voiced Megan in Tracey McBean, Tomasina in Bananas in Pyjamas and most recently, Annabelle in the Nickelodeon/Netflix series Sharkdog alongside Dee Bradley Baker and Kari Wahlgren.

Hannah Schofield – Juli, Jessi (S1)

Aside her previous role in an episode of the 2002 series Don't Blame the Koalas, Sea Princesses is Hannah Schofield's only other credit. Unfortunately it has proven impossible to locate her on other platforms, thus a screenshot of Juli and Jessi is used here.

Alex Cook – Matilda, Vivi

Famous for her breakout role as a child actress in the pay TV drama Love My Way as Lou Jackson, Alex Cook has also appeared in other Australian productions. She was also a producer in a number of shorts before becoming a theatre agent for Mollison Keightley Management.

Keith Buckley – Shark King, Octopus King

Also known as Keith Alexander, Keith Buckley previously voiced John Tracy in addition to narrating the 1968 film Thunderbird 6. During the 60's and 70's, he has also had roles in UK dramas such as Joe 90, The Secret Service and UFO. After moving back to Australia, he has featured in local productions (including Bernard the Dog in the 2011 3D revival of Bananas in Pyjamas) and does various narrations and voiceovers for documentaries and advertisements. Recently, he was also a guest on The Gerry Anderson Podcast.

He is not to be mistaken for the English actor Keith Buckley, who died in December 2020.

Mary-Ann Henshaw – Octopus Queen, “Jaune” (Lost), Marli, Camarina, Elektra (S2)

Mary-Ann Henshaw's only other role in Australian children's television was Amy in the original Bananas in Pyjamas from 1992 to 2001. After Sea Princesses, Mary-Ann Henshaw was never featured in other productions nor was she locatable on other platforms, so any recent news on her is unknown.

Olivia Pigeot – Miss Marla

While Olivia Pigeot continues to feature in Australian productions, she has also been a yoga teacher and in 2019, founded Bondi Kids Drama, offering classes and workshops for primary school children in drama and short film.

Robina Beard – Starfish Grandmother

From the 60s to the 80s, Robina Beard was best known as Madge the Manicurist in Palmolive ads for Australia and New Zealand. She has appeared in various stage and TV roles and in 2018, published a book titled My Life – Your Soaking In It. In January 2011, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to the arts before receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Australian Dance Awards in July that same year.

John Leary – Caton

In addition to his roles in television, film and theatre, John Leary hosts The Saturday Quiz podcast where he asks guests questions from the quiz in The Saturday Paper.

Jamie Croft – Caramelo, Mr Bernardo (S2)

As a child actor, Jamie Croft played Billy Moss in the Australian soap opera A Country Practice and Fred Kelman in the 1995 Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers movie. Later on, Jamie Croft transitioned from acting to being a music producer and event manager, eventually becoming the manager to singer-songwriter Harrison Storm (according to his LinkedIn profile).

So from the credited cast of Sea Princesses, who would be most likely to reprise their role if there were to be a revival or reboot? Well, I think it would be easier to ask who would be unlikely to reprise their role, and that list would include Shannon Murphy, Jacqui Lofgren, Hannah Schofield, Mary-Ann Henshaw and Jamie Croft. But hey, in my personal project, who cares about availability? As long as they aren't dead, I can say that they "reprised" their roles all I want. Well, except for a few times in the past, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

The Conductor rarely blames jockeys, so you know what he’s about to do. Rosario’s ride on Keen Heir Thursday was as bad as it gets on dirt. She was miles the best and cost Mr. Ductor bundles of coal. After that, Shinsun was short in the stretch and Belmont Park had the audacity to scratch the Conductor’s kill shot, Chess Spectacular, in the finale. Can’t draw up a worse way to start the racing…
