Twenty-Third Day of Gift-Giving: Cozy Plans

Prompt: lighting scented candles

A glimpse into Aleksi's (and Rilla's) last night in Oulu 🥺💖

Almost exactly a week ago, Aleksi had been standing in the candle aisle of a Helsinkian department store, a battle taking place inside his head. On one hand, he had been putting himself down for even considering bringing Olli anything with him, afraid he might had misinterpreted the invitation and would only embarrass himself, showing up at Olli’s door with a giftbag full of junk that wouldn’t even begin to explain how happy Aleksi was to spend time with him in Oulu; on the other hand, Aleksi had wanted to sweep the shelves empty of rustic candles and bring them all to Olli as a humble token of his affection, because he couldn’t give Olli the moon from the sky or thread all the stars on a string for Olli to wear around his neck, which would’ve been a way more truthful illustration of Aleksi's feelings. In the end, he had settled for just one, carefully selected candle, realising Olli might not have space for Stockmann’s entire candle selection. 

Now, the same spruce-scented candle was glowing on the coffee table beside them, its flame flickering as if to playfully make fun of Aleksi and his tendencies towards worrying about the future a little too much for his own good. Admiring its little dance, Aleksi entertained himself with the idea that it knew. 

Maybe it had known all along the two of them would eventually end up sitting on the floor in each other's arms on a cosy December evening. Perhaps it had foreseen they would buy another, smaller one on their latest trip to the supermarket to keep it company by a tray of mulled wine and biscuits and was now laughing at Aleksi, asking him how he had ever even doubted that this was how they were supposed to be: Olli’s hands wrapped around his waist from behind, his heartbeat thumping steadily on Aleksi’s back while his own did the same under Olli’s palm. With Rilla curled up on his lap, Aleksi couldn’t have asked the universe for anything more.

“What do you think she’s dreaming about?” Olli asked him. He had laid his chin on Aleksi’s shoulder, so it was easy for Aleksi to nudge his head against Olli’s silky curls.

“Probably about the treats you bought her. Or just you.”

The look Olli then gave him made his heart flutter exactly like those candle flames. 

“You’re messing with me.”

“Am not. She thinks you’re the best.”

Olli turned to look back down at Rilla, but it didn’t stop Aleksi from nuzzling against his temple. He paused to press his lips on Olli’s cheekbone when the tip of his nose caught something wet in the corner of Olli’s eye.

“Distance is a bitch.” Olli’s voice was quiet like a winter night, and equally melancholy in a way, enchanting and lucid at the same time.

“It is.” Aleksi gave Olli’s temple a kiss, and another, and another, as many as was needed until he wouldn’t taste salt on his lips anymore. “We don’t have to think about that now.”

“What if I already am?”

“Then we’re gonna have to think of something to keep your mind busy.”

Tired from a long day’s play and mischief, Rilla only sighed when Aleksi placed him gently on the couch behind them and didn’t seem to notice when Aleksi searched the living room for the two fluffy blankets Olli owned. The other he gave to Rilla for additional comfort, the other he laid on the floor. 

They made slow, intimate love on the floor, in candlelight, the world around them asleep as if to provide them a moment of privacy. They sighed into each other’s mouths, ginger and cinnamon flavouring their kisses, the scent from the candles mixing up with the scent of their unhurried lust. With how seamlessly their bodies worked together, there was no trace of doubt left in Aleksi’s head. 

He might have been leaving the next day, but it would be only his physical body travelling back to Helsinki. Everything else there was left of him, he’d leave here; in Olli’s hands, on Olli’s lips, in Olli’s heart.

A lot has been said about Helia's love language in his and Flora's relationship, but how do you think he shows/expresses his love with others, like the rest of the specialists? Do you think it varies depending on the person? I'd love to hear your opinion! ^^

i think i may have talked about this before but i'm not sure if i talked about the other specialists too!

we definitely see hints of it in canon, most especially with timmy! we often see a "words of affirmation" approach with helia and timmy - helia is just always there to comfort him and back him up :') timmy on the other hand, likes to spend quality time with helia!

for the other specialists, honestly i think helia still does words of affirmation with them too. we just don't get to see it as much :( but we do see it occasionally, like when he gets worried about sky or calls riven his friend etcetc.

as for how much it varies, i can see helia changing it around a little based on how close he is with someone and what they need from friends. helia, for the most part, is pretty perceptive and he knows when someone is uncomfortable. so he definitely wouldn't be complimenting riven all the time because riven (while it is nice to hear) sometimes takes it as an insult/is just vaguely uncomfortable with being people super nice to him. i can see helia instead spending more quality time with him - learning his interests and hobbies, sparring together, hanging out in helia's bigger room cause it's nicer than their little bunk rooms aldgh

now, i don't have any evidence for this because we never get to see their relationship in canon, but i think helia would do more acts of service with brandon! like spotting him, helping him clean up, taking his shift when he wants to go on a date with stella etc. stuff like that!

but anyway, i think for the most part helia tends to fall back on words of affirmation because he's not shy at all about telling his loved ones how much he loves them yknow? but he would also be aware of and prioritize what the other person needs so it can change depending on them!
