Synopsis :

As a disciple of the Lei Clan, Lei Wu Jie can't wait to prove his worth as a hero, but as a novice who has only just entered the martial arts world, the path to becoming a true hero is difficult, at best. Undeterred by the challenges that lay before him, Wu Jie makes his way to the great city of Xue Yue, certain that his time there will mould him into the hero he so longs to be. Unfortunately, his trip to Xue Yue is waylaid by an unfortunate mishap at the Villa of Fallen Snow.

As proprietor of the Villa, Xiao Se has all the looks of a wealthy innkeeper, but he can barely afford to keep the inn open. Struggling with his business, Xiao Se is less than pleased when his establishment is damaged by the antics of a young, wannabe hero. Befriending several people along the way, including Wu Xin, Sikong Qian Luo, Tang Lian, and Ye Ruo Yi, Xiao Se and Wu Jie soon find themselves caught up in an adventure far greater than any of them could have imagined. While facing countless dangers, the group stumbles upon a trail of clues that tie one of them to a battle for the throne that took place over a decade ago. The question is, is the intrepid hero ready and willing to take his rightful place as the leader of the people? And where will the brotherhood go from there?

My thoughts on this drama :

Okay… this drama is AWESOME. I wasn't expecting much, due to it being Wuxia style and thus not "fantasy" enough for me. But man was I wrong. It's just so so good.

I loved every second of it. They're all bringing such vibrant characters to life, with the emotions just right. I trully enjoyed the variety of characters the show offered. I laughed and cried and raged and applauded! I trully lived the story from beginning to end.

A very very good point: romance is never the focus of the story. It's there, in the background, but it's first and foremost a story about brotherhood, friendship and bonds against adversity.

100% recommended!

Hi everyone :) Today I would like to introduce and recommend this c-drama call 少年歌行 (Shao Nian Ge Xing), or “The Blood of Youth”.

It begun airing on 26 Dec 2022 and the series will have a total of 40 episodes. We are currently at Episode 28 (as of 14 Jan 2023).

Synopsis: Six years ago, the 6th prince, Xiao Chu He was banished and stripped off his prince and royal titles by the Emperor for defending the “Lang Ya Prince”, who was said to have committed an act of treason against the country and to be beheaded immediately. Xiao Chu He knelt in front of the palace court for 3 days 3 nights and his defence for the Lang Ya Prince was said to be so moving, several officials shed tears after hearing it. Unfortunately, Xiao Chu He only angered the Emperor further and was hence, banished. The officials who were supportive of Xiao Chu He and the Lang Ya Prince were found dead and Lang Ya Prince was ultimately executed. With Xiao Chu He, the most favoured prince banished, the position of the crown prince is vacant and power struggles between the other princes ensue. Now, the whereabouts of Xiao Chu He remains unknown to the mass.

Characters:

Xiao Se/Xiao Chu He -

Boss/Owner of an inn called 雪落山庄 (Xue Luo Shan Zhuang). Otherwise, the 6th prince (Don’t worry this is not a spoiler XD) He goes by the name Xiao Se now and loves money *^^* But actually, a witty, intelligent confident tsundere. (Aaaaaaaa)

Lei Wu Jie

Met Xiao Se in a fateful encounter at his inn, Xue Luo Shan Zhuang. Due to an incident, Lei Wu Jie “owes” Xiao Se money but doesn’t have enough to pay him back. Lei Wu Jie comes from the Lei family, a prestigious/famous sector known to utilise the element of fire in their martial arts ability. It’s his first time out into the world or Jiang Hu and he doesn’t have much real life experience yet. Very cute and lovable, and an airhead most of the time :3 (I adoreeee him)

Wu Xin

You will have to find out yourself who he is :) A disciple of Han Shui Shi (the name of the temple) with a very mysterious background.

This theme of this shows centers around: friendship, loyalty, sacrifice and love (bromance) :)

Thoughts on The Blood of Youth now that I've finished it (minor spoilers).

Overall it was entertaining. I liked the story, the actors were enjoyable to watch, good costumes, good effects, generally good sets (bonus points for when they reused a set and copped to doing just that in the script. Some refreshing honestly there.) The twist with the multiple scrolls at the end had me laughing. That is the third time I've seen that guy play a shady emperor and he's enjoyable each time.

However, while I really loved the show at the beginning I lost enthusiasm in the last third of it. After thinking about the reasons, I've singled in on this: it has a George R.R. Martin issue, meaning that it introduced so many characters that everything got watered down as the writers scurried around bouncing from one plot to the next, trying to wrap everything up.

Take poor Wuxin. He is presented as a main character, and in fact is a main character at the start. A huge part of the plot centers around him. It is resolved and... he basically disappears. He has a tiny throwaway plot that keeps him isolated, a throwaway explanation as to how he got into that situation, and then poof he's gone again. Thoroughly unsatisfying. For someone who was supposedly rescued through the power of friendship, there was none of it on display, not like what we saw at the beginning of the show.

Lei Wu Jie gets treated better -- at least he doesn't diaper completely -- but he also has entire episodes where he's there for maybe 2 minutes, in what feels like scenes written to remind us he does still exist.

In the meantime we spend lots of time on characters that could have advanced the story off screen (the pretty guy from Untamed -- I love seeing his face but his entire reason for being was to be fridged. While it was cool that it was a guy instead of a girl, all that time could have been spent in better ways). Some characters could have written out easily with no effect on the plot at all (pretty guy's disciples, who did nothing but take up time as far as I can recall), giving time back to the main characters.

Overall, I'd still recommend the show to people who like C-dramas, but not to someone who hasn't watched them before. It's too bad. I really thought this one would be excellent, but it ended up just being good.

This is an absolutely witty nickname and I’ll try to explain why

It’s meant to sound like 火锅少年 (“huo guo shao nian”) i.e. Hotpot Youth

But Shaw’s VA replaced 火 (“huo”) with 佛 (“fo”), because 佛 relates to Buddhism / Buddha

Xia Lei (Lucien): I think one way Love and Producer differs from other games is that other games may just be a game. Love and Producer has become a part of the lives of many players. Kiro, Gavin, Victor, Lucien, and Shaw - these characters have become part of their lives.

Xia Lei (Lucien): Right. It isn’t simply a “I’m going to tap the game open and claim a daily reward pack and do tasks”. It’s not that simple. The interaction between players. For example, I never thought about the day this game would end. Thinking about it is pretty... [nods emotionally and then cheers with everyone]

Bian Jiang (Kiro): After so many years, we’ve walked together with them, whether it’s in the form of company or being ‘fettered’. Together, we’ve developed a connection between the him in there and me in real life. If it truly disappeared from life one day, I would be very reluctant to part with him.

Xia Lei (Lucien): To me, I think the role has become a friend in my life. Would you ever think of your friend leaving? You wouldn’t think about this question seriously.

Totally agree with your thoughts on how different Wu Lei & Reba are from their TLB characters! I was especially impressed with how serious they took their role - and you're right Wu Lei's interviews and live streams with Reba feel like watching a different him, the "Sun"-like him. Given how committed they were to doing their characters justice, I wonder whether the fact that Wu Lei calls Reba without "jie" is something they both agreed on at the beginning to fall quicker into the dynamic...

IMO, it couldn’t have been a mutual agreement.

The interesting thing is that they’ve known each other for many years and they’ve consistently run into each other at events. We don’t really know if he used to call her “jie” and stopped at some point.

In 2017 they did a photo shoot and mini movie in Tokyo for Harper’s Bazaar China. She (and many other celeb friends) also sent him a video message for his 18th birthday. In 2018 they were on an episode of Happy Camp together. In 2019 they filmed another program together for CCTV. Later in 2019 he sent flowers to her birthday event addressed to “Reba”. At the TLB booting ceremony, they already seemed quite friendly with each other.

I heard somewhere that there’s a fancam of him saying “Reba jie” at the CCTV event but I couldn’t find it. In any case, they didn’t know each other super well at the time and there were a lot of older people there (like, people that Wu Lei could be calling auntie and uncle) so it wouldn’t surprise me if he did call her “jie” at that event. We also know he has sent flowers for another actress’s birthday addressed to “jie”, and he sent flowers to just “Reba” before TLB, so it’s definitely his own choice not to call her “jie”.

Plus, there were a few times when she called him “Wu Lei di di” (di di = younger brother), but that was after TLB had started filming, and she always said it in a lighthearted joking way. She has also brought up the age gap several times, but if she brings it up around him he tends to ignore it or change the topic. She has also said that he feels like an older brother because of his height and how he takes care of people.

My feeling is that they never discussed it. She just isn’t a “jie” to him.
