A Letter of Beginning
Dear… whoever,
My name is Glenn. I’m a student at Rexridge High School. Was? I’m not sure. I’m writing this down to process everything that’s happened, and I guess a part of me hopes someone back home will somehow receive it and know what happened.
It hasn’t been that long. Twelve hours, give or take by the position of the sun. It’s not too different from the one at home, so small mercies, I guess. Glad my field knowledge doesn’t go to waste here. But I don’t know if there’s a time difference between here and home, so… just in case…
Hello. My name is Glenn. Yes, the Glenn on the missing posters.
I’m with the other four missing kids. Fyrus, Avery, Sophia, and Adrien. We’re alright, for the most part. Just… lost.
It all started like this.
————————————————————
Glenn doesn’t know why the woods are calling to him.
The small forest bordering their high school is nothing significant. Aside from the unusualness of birch next to red cedar trees, the dense shrubbery and common moss don’t exactly stand out as some mysterious landscape. It isn’t particularly big either; it wouldn’t take long to walk through it, and nobody ever got lost in it.
All in all, it’s rather unremarkable.
And yet Glenn’s boots drag him there after school one seemingly random Tuesday. He trudges along, bandana scarf ruffled by the wind. His nature guidebook sits in its usual place in the satchel next to his waist, but that isn’t why he’s walking into the woods.
He’s not sure why he’s walking into the woods.
But he’s walking into them all the same.
Dirt muddies the soles of his boots. The fresh scent of cedar spikes his nose. He brushes twigs away from his sightline, curiosity ballooning in his chest alongside the mysterious feeling tugging him forward. Distantly he can hear the last bell ring, shooing any stragglers in the schoolyard away. He reaches an open glade in the woods and pauses. As far as he can tell, he’s completely alone-
A twig snaps somewhere on his blind side.
He whips his head to the right, immediately defensive whenever someone or something approaches from his right. A guarded scowl tugs at the scars under the trusty eyepatch covering the right half of his face. He scans the trees, trying to find who made the sound.
A teen in a grey and red hoodie stumbles through the bushes, shaking leaves from his carbon-fibre leg. When he catches sight of Glenn, a bright smile bursts over his face. “Glenn!”
Glenn’s shoulders drop from where they’d been tensed. “Fyrus. What are you doing here?”
Fyrus stretches, swiping spiky bands of black hair from his freckled face. “I could say the same to you, but I just kinda... felt like going into the woods for some reason? Like-” He makes a gesture with his hands as if a rope was connected to his chest pulling him to the glade. “Odd, right?”
Glenn frowns at that. “I... have a similar feeling.”
Fyrus cocks his head. “Wait, really? No way! That’s so strange!”
More rattling shrubbery catches their attention, and from another side of the woods steps a teen in a white and blue jacket, ripped black pants, and knee-high boots. Her hair is swept on one side, shaved on the other, and dyed black, white, and light blow. A baseball bat is hefted over her shoulders.
She looks at the two of them in surprise. “Who’re you?”
Glenn opens his mouth to answer, but before he can, another rustle catches his ears. He turns to see yet another teen step from a different direction towards them, this time from a more clear trail. Her face pinches slightly in discomfort as she tries to tie her long blond and blue hair behind her to avoid getting it caught on branches. Glenn recognizes her as a member of the student council, though he doesn’t know her name.
She catches sight of them, gaze swiping over each with an analytical, skeptical look. “What are you three doing here?”
Fyrus pipes up before Glenn or the girl with the baseball bat can speak. “Glenn and I just kinda felt a tug. Weird, huh?”
Baseball bat girl’s eyebrows raise. “A weird tug? Same.”
Student council girl crosses her arms in disbelief. “Oh, sure. You just felt a mysterious tug. That’s definitely not an excuse you’re feeding me because you three got caught.”
Fyrus tilts his head. “Caught?”
“Yeah, caught before you could do... whatever you gathered here to do.”
Glenn shakes his head. “We didn’t intend to-”
The bushes rustle again, quieter than before. Glenn trails off, staring ahead as a fifth teen cautiously steps into the clearing. He moves quietly with soft footsteps, a burgundy umbrella held open above him despite the sunny weather. His hair is black, the roots stark white. In the shade, his eyes look red- though they might actually be that colour. He’s dressed in a fashionable slim silver coat with a maroon scarf.
The other four teens quiet. Glenn’s never talked to the kid before, but he recognizes him as the mysterious loner of the school, the one with countless rumours swirling around him. What rumours, he doesn’t know, never bothering to pay attention to those, but he does at least know they exist for some reason.
The mysterious teen watches without speaking, gaze switching between them. His knuckles are white around the handle of his umbrella.
“So who are you?” Baseball bat girl asks.
“Did you feel a ‘weird pull’ too?” Student council girl says with a disbelieving scoff.
Mystery boy stares at them. As he opens his mouth to answer, the ground suddenly begins to shake. Fyrus throws out his arms of balance, pinwheeling them. The others struggle to keep their footing, eyes wide in surprise.
“An earthquake?!” Student council girl shouts. “What-”
Glenn rubs his eye, shaking his head to clear it. For a moment he could have sworn the trees around them were moving in unnatural ways, twisting and contorting and growing with bending shadows. It must have been an illusion from the earthquake, like the sudden prickling feeling of heat across his skin. Oddly enough, he hears the... ocean? Waves crashing on a beach.
It must be branches falling in the woods. They’re nowhere near an ocean.
The wind picks up, whirling around them with vicious howling. Glenn raises his hands to protect against it, squinting through the sudden storm. His boots slide in the shaking dirt. A burnt taste suddenly finds itself on Glenn’s tongue.
As he watches, strange symbols of light seem to etch themselves in the air and on the ground. Indistinct shouting rings out from the other teens, muffled by the wind. The soil under his feet starts to give away with a sinking sensation, crumbling from the centre of the glade outward into a forming hole. But the hole doesn’t have dirt at the bottom, nor is it a black void. It’s a spinning collage of colours, rippling like a mirror.
Glenn tries to stumble back, but the swirling spiral of wind pushes him forward. The ground cracks away underfoot, sending him pitching forward into the vortex along with the other four teens.
The next thing he knows, he’s laying in the grass of somewhere distinctly not Earth.
————————————————————
I know, I know, sounds impossible. A cave-in? Underground gas pipe explosion? Science class fumes hallucination?
No. We discussed all the possibilities together, and there’s only one conclusion.
We fell through a portal to another world.
It’s mind-blowing, honestly. Scary. A part of me is trying to distract from the fear and confusion by wanting to study the unique flora of this world. I mean, there are so many new mushroom types alone here. I’ve already seen honey-coloured caps and ones that mimic tree bark. And the trees in this area seem similar to birch, though more silver in colour. It’s weird but kind of cool, that’s for sure. Hopefully we can find something edible.
Another part of me finds this place strangely familiar.
Right now we’ve managed to set up a base camp in a nearby glade using a boulder as cover. The others have turned to me for guidance because I’m the only one with experience part-timing as a camp instructor. Fyrus and Avery managed to find some firewood and Sophia found some giant plant leaves to use as a tarp. Adrien did his own thing and cleared the area of stones and sharp twigs, and is now sitting under a tree in the shade of his umbrella and... doing something, I’m not sure.
I’ve never met Adrien before. There’s a lot of rumours about him- he’s a loner, he always has his umbrella, gives off “mysterious vibes” according to my classmates (apparently he’s “totally a vampire”, which I highly doubt) - but I don’t pay attention to that stuff. He’s careful of where he steps on the flora, and that’s good enough for me, I guess.
Sophia and Avery are also newcomers to me, though I’ve seen Avery on the sports field for the rugby team and the baseball team. She’s got her bat with her, and she’s already said she’d fight anything that approaches our camp to defend us. A little brash, maybe, but her words helped Fyrus and Sophia, so it’s comforting. Sophia’s on the student council and I see her around the library, though she usually avoids the campgrounds I work at. Avoids a lot of the outdoors, but hey, she’s doing her best here.
Fyrus is really the only one I know well. He’s a good friend of mine, full of energy and drive. He won’t stop for anything once he puts his mind to a task (usually because he gets so focused he forgets), and I’ve had to remind him to grab food and water before. He calls me a hypocrite (and then immediately apologies- he’s too nice for his own good) because I can go overboard on work too. Kid’s a little naive and overtrusting, but he’s got a good heart.
I don’t know why I’m writing all this down. Probably as a record in case... well, just so people know who we were in if something happens.
Morbid thought, I know.
That’s it for now. I want to save paper space for the others and it’s starting to get dark. Not great for the eye to be writing in the dark.
And I want to check on the others. Just because I don’t know them well doesn’t mean I shouldn’t make sure everyone’s handling this okay.
We’ll get through this together.
We have to.

The Black Vixens - Riki’s POV
Riki’s POV from this fanfic!
My POV here
Corynne = Takuto horizon-day
(Virginia + Sabryna = Kenshi weburythesunlight22  otakutimee
Brenna = Riki
Genevieve = Yuki sirkyoisbae
Meliana = Taiga rose-21-3
Kelly = Hiro voltage-is-life
Tatsuro = Vivien (I apologize I forgot your username :( )
Hyosuke = Ace acethemadknight
nerdii-panda
Earlier in the evening…
Gathered around at LRN we were doing the usual. I already had a few beers in me and I could feel my neediness levels climb. I wish Brenna were here. Instead I am stuck with these guys. Takuto was complaining about not having pork noodles. Corynne, his girlfriend, had taken the last of it this afternoon for lunch. I almost scoffed out loud. I just shook my head.
“You think you got it bad? Brenna hardly ever gives up her share when we get in arguments.” I huffed, crossing my arms across my chest.
“Well you both got a God-complex. It’s natural for you to clash in that way.” Taiga said.
I narrowed my eyes at him. Only I could talk about her in that way. “What did you just say Kujo?!” I hissed, rising from my chair. I could take this guy on, easily.  But before I could do anything about it Kenshi had gently pushed me back down, which had calmed me down some.
Takuto, that blonde little shit, starting ringing his mouth off. Before I had a chance to do anything about it, the topic got changed. Now we were trying to make this guy’s night into something rather than just sitting here and doing nothing. I could go along with that.
“I need to get some cash then.” I told them, “The bank is just right down the street from the girls’ house.” After agreeing to go to the bank, we set off.
We casually walked down the street. When we neared the bank we noticed a familiar figure disappearing into the doors. I suddenly felt uneasy. “Something is not right here, I only carry the key after the bank closes. Whoever just went in there shouldn’t have been able to get in.” I stated, narrowing my eyes a bit before continuing towards the building.
That was when Hiro and Hyosuke spoke at the same time. “The Black Vixens!”
That reminded me, those blasted females that started up around the same time we did. I haven’t heard about them for a year or so now. Now I was interested to see what we would find in this bank. “Lets just go and check it out.” I told them, interrupting the chatter and leading the way.
When we all piled inside we heard muffled voices. One of those voices was way to familiar. Why is she-
My thought was interrupted when I heard a shout. I cocked my head towards the guys telling them to quietly surround them and for Tatsuro to turn on the lights.
Once their faces were illuminated, I could see the sheer shock that was plastered on each of the girls. As it settled in my slightly intoxicated brain that we knew these ladies, I noticed that they weren’t wearing pants. What the hell? Where are their pants? Out of the corner of my eye I saw Takuto go towards Corynne, but my real focus was on Brenna who was bent over the deposit box.
All she did was stare at me, her hazel eyes round in shock, but that quickly changed into something else. I grinned; I knew the look she was giving me. I shifted my weight a bit so she could get a better look at all my assets.
Then the explanations came as to why they didn’t have any pants on and why they were out this late of night to begin with. They wanted food, had no money for food, but were also too lazy to put pants on. I don’t know if I accepted ‘too lazy to put pants on’ but whatever. Doesn’t Brenna at least know that she should at least wear something that covers her underwear? I should be the only person that sees those. But I guess whenever food comes into her mind she usually can’t think of anything else. Usually.
After their little explanation we decided to leave. I walked slightly behind Brenna, my hands teasing her waist and making it seem like I was going to slip my hands up her big sweater. Sensing what I was going to do she quickly spun around and grabbed my hands telling me how she is in fact the leader of the Black Vixens. Hmm, so she is the leader like I am the leader. I gave her a grin when I noticed the faint blush on her cheeks.
“I want you to explain your missions that you guys did years ago.” I asked them all, but then I felt a tickle in my ear followed by a lovely scent and hot breath. “We’ll do that in private tonight.” Brenna whispered to me before whacking my butt and trotting off. What just happened? That woman.
“Maybe tomorrow.” I muttered quickly to the others before I took off following her retreating body outside of the bank.
Once we were separated from the rest of the gang I pressed my body against her and covered her mouth with my hand before she could let out a shriek. “Shhhh! Don’t draw attention this way!” I whispered in her ear. She reacted in shuddering against me. I froze for a split second, my head only thinking a singular thought.
“I think we need to get you home.” I mumbled before I gently (but quickly)lead her to her house.

Have you met any sentient life yet? Like animals? Glenn, since you're a nature person, have you seen any animal tracks?
Or maybe all the animals float in this world...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found this about ten minutes ago. It's... strange, to say the least. Doesn't directly match any animal track I've ever seen, in real life, books, or online, but it's kind of a mix of fox, raccoon, and almost... human.
Seems to have some kind of gripping ability. Climbs, maybe, and digs. I found a few at a base of a tree leading to another tree, so whatever left these prints likely jumped down for some reason and ran up the other tree. Maybe it was hunting someone on the forest floor? Or it was being hunted by something in the canopy and ran to the ground to escape...
Whatever it is, it’s definitely strange.
We’ve seen a few birds, but mostly at a distance- seems our presence is causing any wildlife to steer clear, if I had to guess. It’s... quiet.
Fyrus spotted something up ahead that looks like a more clean-cut and walked path, almost like a road. It’s getting dark, though, so we’ll camp for the night and check it out tomorrow.

After making a new camp in a cave along the trail last night, we continued following the stream and eventually ended up at this beautiful lake. Now that there’s no canopy obstructing it, we can see the sky. It’s more cyan than I’m used to, which probably has to do with all the vivid green plants and reflected greenish-blue water. The water looks high in nutrients for bacteria and plankton life. Probably not so good for us. The water has too much of a green tint for my liking, so we’re still getting our water from the running stream- a much safer option to, you know, getting the other-world equivalent of beaver fever.
Fyrus and Sophia wanted a quick break. Fyrus doesn’t say it when he needs to, but I’ve known him long enough to tell. Sophia, I know less well, but she began voicing her opinion on how a stop would be good to refresh our bearings. I think her feet are hurting, though she’s too proud to admit it. Adrien took his umbrella up to a nook dangling over the water and is hunched over his papers again. Ha, and our peers think he’s a vampire.
Avery and I actually got to talking while we patrolled the area for any wildlife or potential threats. I’ve seen her around our school- mostly in the distance on the Rugby or Baseball teams. She’s seen me around too, but also at a distance because I’m in an advanced leadership class. We’ve never really talked before. It was... nice.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Avery: So, Camper Boy, whatcha thinking we might out here?
Glenn: ...Camper Boy? I- [sigh] I’m not sure. I’ve found some life identical or near-identical to home, so for now we have some food as long as it isn’t poisonous, but...
Avery: No way to tell for certain, huh?
Glenn: ...not really, no. I wish there was... I-... so how are you holding up?
Avery: Pretty good, all things considered. Nice topic change, by the way. How’re you faring?
Glenn: ...
Avery: ...it’s tough, isn’t it? You’re the one with the camping experience and knowledge.
Glenn: ...what if I mess up? What if...
Avery: One wrong move and everyone...
Glenn: ...yeah.
Avery: I think I get it. I’m not gonna claim I know exactly how you feel, ‘specially since I don’t know you all that well, but because I’m tall, got muscle, and have a baseball bat, I feel like the responsibility to defend everyone from some wild animal or monster, if we ever run into one, falls on me.
Glenn: Everyone’s depending on us...
Avery: Yeah. But hey, lighten up, Camper Boy. We’ll get through it. And if you need any help, just let me know. I don’t have your nature smarts but I can be a second opinion if you need one.
Glenn: ...you’re right. We will get through this. And... thanks.
Avery: No problem. Now- Want to see what’ll happen if I toss a rock into the lack near the others?
Glenn: You know what- sure.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The answer is that Sophia freaked out and shoved Fyrus into a bush. He’s got fun sticker band-aids in his bag, so he’s fine. And in good news, he found salmonberries(?). It looks identical to the salmonberry plants at home. We might have just found more food options.

How did you lose your eye, Glenn?
I don't remember it clearly. It happened when I was really little, I guess. My (adoptive) parents say they found me crying in the forest by our old house with blood down my face. Must have gotten attacked by a wild animal. Bear, maybe, or a cougar, based on the claws, though not really the right behaviour. My parents rushed me to the hospital since, well, I obviously survived. Couldn't find any biological parents I was attached to so, well, adopted right then and there.
You'd think that would turn me away from the outdoors forever, huh. My dad likes to joke that it should have. But the opposite happened, really. My mom's an explorer and a ranger, and she was patrolling the forest that day, and she taught me so many things about nature that it was hard not to get hooked.
I like telling the campers at my work different stories about how I lost it. Keeps them on their toes and keeps them out of the forests at night.
I don't know why, but the scar feels a little tighter here. There's some crawling feeling in my gut that won't go away. I don't know a lot about the others, but the dread they're feeling? It's not the same. I can't identify mine, but it's not like the others, and somehow that makes it more terrifying.

We decided to leave camp today. There’s no sign of the portal that dumped us here, and unfortunately, Fyrus’ and Sophia’s bags aren’t endless storages of sandwiches. We need to find food, supplies, and drinkable water. Maybe even someone who can help us.
The sounds of the woods we’re travelling through alone are enough to tell me this isn’t anywhere on Earth. I’ve studied hundreds of animal calls and bird calls, both in our area and around the world, and I’ve never heard any of these noises before. It’s... well, “spooky” doesn’t feel serious enough. It’s eerie. I feel like we’re being watched from every direction. Some of these animal(?) calls fill me with tension. Fyrus is trying not to let it get to him, trying to keep his bright smile and chipper attitude, but he’s jumped on more than one occasion. Avery’s more chill, but she’s got a tight grip on her baseball bat. Sophia hates it here but to her credit, she’s doing a great job not complaining. The normal great outdoors isn’t for everyone, and this is not the normal great outdoors.
I can’t read how Adrien’s handling it. Mysterious as always, huh.
Right now we’re following this stream. It’s a good way marker back to our old camp if need be, and I have my water purification tablets from my camping gear with me. Once our water bottles from home drain, which is soon, we’ll have to risk this water and hope it isn’t different or bacteria-filled or deadly. We don’t really have any other choice other than dehydration.
We just have to hope for the best, I guess. It’s just us five against nature right now.

Adrien apparently did a few quick sketches and notes of us. I didn’t know he drew. That’s what he was doing earlier, I guess. I attached them here, to verify our identities for the missing posters.
We’re checking over our supplies today. Nothing ate us during the night, which is good, and Avery and I swapped night watch shifts. We said we’d wake the others for their turns, but... well, they needed the sleep. Everyone was tossing and turning (Fyrus) or shivering (Sophia) or curled away from the group (Adrien), and once they actually managed to fall asleep, neither Avery nor I had the heart to wake them.
For now, we’re sticking here, where the ‘portal’ spat us out. Kind of just... waiting to see if the portal will return or not before we make our next move. I’m still trying to determine if this is anywhere on Earth. I didn’t recognize any major constellation or any of the fauna. I might have found a dandelion, but it was trampled from our landing yesterday, so I’m not sure. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if those things lived on other worlds too, if we’re really not on Earth; dandelions are tough.
Fyrus and Sophia packed extra sandwiches, which is good news because I have no idea what could be edible here. I’ve seen some odd fruit similar to the ones at home, but also very different-looking fruit. Spiky purple fruit, for example, that’s probably poisonous. Yeah, not really looking to get poisoned. Fyrus also has his other leg in his bag, and it thankfully didn’t get damaged.
Avery found a banged-up but usable deck of cards in her bag. We’re going to play a game soon, to improve morale and try to break some ice between us.
I hope the portal returns.

After a surprisingly nice rest in the dining room of the castle, we decided to spend the day exploring. Still no one, however... it really does seem like this place is abandoned.
Tumblr media

We found a throne room, though... it wasn’t at the centre of the castle, as expected, and seems to be more of a guest room. It also doesn’t match the style of the rest of the castle, so perhaps it is a spare throne for visiting rulers?
Tumblr media

In more fascinating news, we found the castle has a basement. It isn’t creepy dungeons as one would expect from a typical medieval-styled castle, but instead seems to be more of a study. The rooms are built at sea-level, and in some cases, right above or even below the waters.

It’s quite incredible. There is plenty of cycled, breathable air, yet we can see through to the ocean floor beyond the walls. Avery dared each of us to touch the glass. I myself ended up... chickening out. Sophia, surprisingly, did not- I believe she was smiling after despite her scoffing tone? I’m... not sure. Glenn did not, and Fyrus placed both hands against the glass confidently before backing away. I do not blame him- I am not the biggest fan of the ocean. The timing to swim in it is delegated by the temperature outside, and for it to be warm enough to swim, it is likely a very sunny Summer. I prefer the indoor pools and the cloudy days of Spring and Autumn.
Oh, goodness, I got side-tracked again... I apologize. Right now we are gathered in what seems to be a meeting room- or perhaps even a game room. I... have my sketchbook, I usually reserve it only for fashion design sketches and the like, but I could quickly draw some playing cards... but how would I even go about asking if anyone could like to play? I’ve... never played cards with anyone other than my mom.
I... think I will try? I don’t know if I’ll work up the nerve to ask, but... I’ll design them.
- Adrien
Hey-yo, Avery here with a quick update- Adrien made this real neat deck of cards and we sat around playing a couple rounds of Hearts and Go Fish and stuff (I mean, we’re practically underwater, we had to play Go Fish). Glad to see he’s warming up to us. The guy’s real nice. All of them are.
It’s a good group, you know?
- Avery
PS: Hey, Adrien, if you read this- you’re pretty cool. Glad to have you in the group, friend.

We found this strange, almost secret passageway while attempting to find our way back to the upper floors. It’s... incredibly beautiful. The plants here are all natural and seem to be thriving despite the lack of sunlight in this room- instead, it is lit by these gorgeous floating source lights. It’s... magical.
There’s a plaque in this room that seems to dedicate it as a “Gift from the Capital of Nathivine”. It’s quite wonderful. I would love to design a dress based on this room, but a few quick photos for later reference will need to do...
We followed the waterfall up to an ornate door. And when we opened it...

It’s mystical.

Adrien, is the light from the sun (?) in Xeria more or less harsh on your skin?
Oh! Well... I'm not quite sure. I haven't taken any chances, though the beach was nearly insufferably warm with my coat... I'm very glad my umbrella came with me, I would have been in considerable trouble otherwise. I don't know how strong the solar radiation here is, but the others haven't gotten sunburnt either, even without sunscreen, so it likely isn't much stronger on the skin than the sun at home, if at all.
It could be the same sun. Or perhaps it isn't a sun at all? I'm not quite sure... but I'm keeping my umbrella shade to be safe. I don't have a lot of my medical creams if I get burnt. But thank you for your concern.
