Some of the colours look bizarre. Fun challenge to only use the mspaint default colours + give each member a unique lineart colour and base colour. Being able to mash a character design down to its essentials while still being recognisable is a slept on power ya know ☝️

HOOPS AND YOYO'S HAUNTED HALOWEEN STUFFF!!!!

Hoops and Yoyo’s Haunted Halloween Is a 2D Special made for the Hallmark channel by Bent Image Lab and released October 2012 making it 11 years old.

Its a neat little short that changes the dynamic up a bit with Piddles being a voice of reason type character. It has a few good jokes its alright worth at least 1 watch. Following the film is the music video for Wacky Werewolf, they were definitely made at the same time as they release within the same time span and also reuse background characters from Haunted Halloween. I have a DVD copy of the movie and uploaded the movie and its behind the scenes video to YouTube for you all to watch.

Now for some facts and trivia, 

The short was nominated for Best production design in an animated television/broadcast production for the 40th Annie Awards as seen on the DVD’s box and on the site of Pedro Martin who has an interesting connection with Hoops and Yoyo as he did A LOT of work with the franchise including a lot of merchandise work but thats a topic for another day. Heres some of his background/key art he did for the movie.

The Intro to Haunted Halloween was reused in a youtube video with a more generic message

An official spanish dub exists as the movie was broadcast in Disney XD Latin America and only exists through a tv recording of it airing in 2013

uhh i made. a little thing to kind of explore idea stufff this is just an idea, like what if Oscar’s plan was to lie and say that all of the valuable Teegardian’s were gone, so they would leave the planet alone? and somehow Ecliptica discovers this and is angry at his betrayal.

I think its a little out of character, but I wanted to play with the concept a bit. I’m sure Cass has other more horrible plans for Oscar’s fate-

did a quick height chart for my elementalists.

Firnam and Penta are tall, but still average height for their respective race. Penta looks taller by definition of high heels.

Baruhn is tall for a charr, but slim. Ghlis is just damn tall and heavy, with above average height.

Achro is based on myself irl, so he's canonically 1.98m

Lucien the demon, nephew of Aloisia because I said so. It’s mom is pretty cool too but I haven’t finished that drawing just yet

His personality is surprisingly mature but because his aunt is Aloisia he’s treated like a child constantly. So sometimes it’s a brat, sometimes it’s pretty mature. Kinda depends on it’s mood lmao.

Is a little sadistic and feels the need to try and make his mother proud of him because mommy issues hahhaaha. I deeply enjoy this character, honestly might be my new favorite

What’s in a Name? Contrasting “Ren” Pseudonyms in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and Skip Beat!

I know what you’re thinking: what kind of nerd starts an essay comparing two medias because they have characters who share the same pseudonym? 

And... I mean... you’re right. 

Because the answer is a Baillie that’s waiting for school to start again and is antsily writing stufff to keep her mind sharp. Also she got in an argument with someone on facebook. Y’know. The same. 

Beginning of the essay under the cut. Will finish....eventually. 

The name “Ren” meaning “lotus” bears the connotation of a peaceful beauty, if not an embodiment of enlightenment. Lotus flowers are often depicted floating amid a body of water. Floating. Inaccessible to its surroundings. Its solitary nature is what has lent itself to the different (yet strikingly similar) interpretations of the flower throughout different cultures (Ravenscroft “Lotus Flower Meaning and Symbolisms”). According to Ravenscroft, the Lotus is admired, especially in Buddhist texts, for its ability to slick away the mud and water the flowers emerge from. Perhaps why the name “Ren” has become a somewhat-popular name in pop culture.  In Star Wars, the internationally successful Sci-Fi Fantasy franchise, as well as Skip Beat!, a successful Japanese manga, main characters of their respective series appropriate the name “Ren” for their personal growth and development. Ben Solo is reimagined as Kylo Ren, master/leader of the Knights of Ren and Kuon Hizuri constructs the persona of untouchable Japanese heartthrob Ren Tsuruga. Both men take the interpretation of “Ren” and its meaning in entirely separate ways that leads to the divergence of any similarities. The construction of these two men’s new identities offer insight into the different psyches of trauma regarding teenage boys. After all, what’s a better way to rebel against trauma than shedding the name your trauma attacked? Act like a lotus, be like a lotus.

Ben Solo is born of the Princess Leia Organa and General (though many associate him, still, with “Smuggler”) Han Solo shortly after the Battle of Endor that closed the original Star Wars Trilogy. From conception to birth, it’s established in the novelization of The Force Awakens, the first of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, that Leia has been able to feel Ben’s pull to the dark side since day one (Foster 223). Through his early childhood, Leia and Han are riddled with the responsibilities that spurred from their heroic actions at the end of Return of the Jedi. After the defeat of The Empire, Ben’s parents have no choice but help build the New Republic out of the ashes of the fallen Republic. Leia’s greatest connection to Ben was their shared affinity within the Force—a connection that allowed Leia to understand the darkness that lingered in Ben due to his (and, by extension, her) shared lineage with Darth Vader. Han Solo lacks this connection his wife shared with their son, something that discouraged him in his ability to be a father. He learned, however, that he and Ben could simply share the connection of being father and child, something that Leia and Luke were never able to experience with their birth father Anakin Skywalker before he completed his transformation in Darth Vader. Their family was by no means a normal one. But it was a family none the less.

Ben’s downfall, it seems, may have started with the election of Leia into one of the Senate seats of the New Republic. At her constant fear of Ben learning the truth of his lineage, Leia has devoted many hours into make sure her secrets will remain just that: secret. She’s unable to sense the strengthening of the darkness in Ben as he is called to by Snoke due to her attempts to maintain order within the New Republic. Han, while having cleaned up his name by becoming a helluva pilot and teaching Ben his trade, can’t stay in one place for too long. He opts, instead, to make a name for himself beyond “Rebel Alliance Savior.” By the time Leia and Han can recognize the darkness within their son, it could be wagered that they were too late. In their son, they can see the semblance of a dictator they spent years trying to defeat. As Han acknowledged in the film, “there was too much Vader in him” (Abrams 77). Knowing that Leia’s brother, the infamous Luke Skywalker, was able to pull Vader back to the light in the Sith Lord’s last moments, Leia and Han send Ben to Luke’s attempt at reassembling a Jedi Order (a promise he made to Yoda back in the original trilogy). However, Ben is already too far gone. Luke is also able to sense Ben’s infatuation with the Dark side of the force, noting Ben’s raw power that was likely passed through his bloodline. But Ben is no Anakin Skywalker (the jedi that was before the “birth” of Darth Vader). His lack of attatchments, his possible resentment to his parents for sending him away, make it seem improbable that he will ever return to the light like Vader did. Especially considering Snoke’s bond with Ben. Luke, for just a moment, contemplates killing Ben to prevent the growth of a new, more sinister Empire and draws his lightsaber (Johnson, The Last Jedi). And immediately regrets it. This however, is the final straw for Ben and as he sees his uncle with a lightsaber in hand. He buys into Snoke’s tales of a malicious Jedi and accepts a new fate: not as a Jedi Padawan but instead a member of the Knights of Ren. His initiation is easy. Destroy the Jedi temple. Recruit those who allow themselves to be swayed to his side. Kill everybody else. It is here that Ben becomes known as the “Jedi Killer” (Hidalgo, The Force Awakens: Visual Dictionary). It is here that Ben Solo adopts the name “Kylo Ren.” In Ben’s renaming, he sheds the name of “Solo” and sheds the legacy of his parents as saviors of the peace. He instead opts for a name that erases his past. Kylo’s lotus is one of purity (as demented as that purity may be). When he notably remarks: “let the past die” in The Last Jedi, he means it. Ben Solo, as his parents know him, is dead.

In Skip Beat!,the road to Ren is an entirely different path. Kuon Hizuri is born to superstar Kuu Hizuri and supermodel Juliena Hizuri after Kuu’s retirement from the Japanese film industry. Many might assume that Kuon was raised, like Ben, in a home where his parents attempted to hide behind their responsibilities. But there’s no real reason to come to such conclusions in the sixteen year run of the manga—where very little information can be drawn up regarding Kuon’s past (as opposed to Star Wars’s pool of canon material that has been released following the revitalization of Lucasfilm by Kathleen Kennedy in 2012). The Hizuri family is an odd one. One where Juliena seems to be prone to overexaggerating everything from her health to her cooking ability to Kuu’s seemingly infinite fame. Everybody knew the Hizuri name. It was known enough that when Kuon (on his own accord) decided to pick up acting, the name was enough to book jobs. However the name was not enough to keep his jobs.  Perhaps it was a director’s desire for Kuu’s talent that was cultivated for many years in a newbie actor that began the process of breaking Kuon down. Or perhaps it was Kuon’s disillusioned belief that his name (and his guts) that would surf him into the spotlight. Reader’s are left only to the creations of their own minds and imagination in creating their own fan-canon until Yoshiki Nakamura can fully address the situation of Kuon’s youth. One thing remains for certain: it seems everybody around him seems to be disappointed Kuon is not simply a mini-Kuu. Enter Rick. He’s established almost as a mentor for Kuon, bordering on best friend (despite an apparent age gap). Rick wants Kuon to fight for his right to be in the industry. He wants him to fight for his right to be a Hizuri. Unfortunately, nobody takes Kuon’s drive seriously.

This failure sets up Kuon anger at his identity. Anger and disappointment translate into what his parents had called “Dark Kuon.” Not only would he act out against the very industry that he was attempting to enter: but he would also submit himself into acting out against the “real world.” The acting world was more forgiving. After all, he was a Hizuri. However, the “real world” didn’t hold that name up on the same pedestal (in regard to street cred). Kuon’s almost-arrogance leads him into serious conflicts that end up with him being persecuted not because of his name…but because of his race. His weakness, that has been portrayed as the thing that will keep him out of acting, seems to have disappeared as he instigates what can only be described as a street brawl. It’s him against the world.       

At least, that’s how it starts. However—Rick wasn’t about to let Kuon go off the deep end and potentially ruin everything they had built up. He instead opts to attempt in protecting Kuon, even at the risk of his own safety. That’s where things go from bad to worse. Rick follows Kuon into the thick of the fight and meets his own demise against the front of a car that was likely trying to kill Kuon. As Tina, Rick’s significant other, screams at Kuon for “killing” Rick, Kuon knows that he’s messed up. This is it. This is the end. In Kuon’s eyes, his biggest betrayal to the Hizuri name is to have let himself get caught into such a mess. A mess where his best friend died trying to save him. Rick’s death is what ultimately drives Kuon to do better. To shape up. Rick had been telling him for years that he needed to be careful of what he did and how he portrayed himself, allowing himself to be beat up in the industry. Kuon needed to be mindful of how he portrayed the Hizuri name. In Rick’s death: the answer became obvious: Kuon needed to shed his name to earn his name.  

The name “Tsuruga Ren” came out of necessity. Kuon needed a reprise from his own legacy to step back and understand what it meant to be a Hizuri. If Kuon planned on succeeding in the legacy of his overly successful family, as well surpassing his “failure” of that said name, he needed to start from scratch. He needed to be the lotus that would rise unscathed from the murky waters before he could ever think of returning to the Hizuri name. For Kuon, “Ren” is only temporary.

Disclaimer: I’m barely working out the Star Wars canon and the Skip Beat canon is a little fuzzy (I need to work on that over the rest of break).

Every new smp/series I come across- i like to assign an overarching theme to it and this hc season is no different:

The mainland of Season 10 is riddled with pirates and cowboys. Each hermit is wanted of some charge, for one reason or another. As initiation, losing a life will remove that bounty and that hermit can start fresh. But becoming the last survivor, that hermit will be gifted the Treasure of the Island (whatever the reward Grian says it is 😭)
