i hope this similarity is preserved in the translation, because it should translate directly i think, but what hiyori says here is the exact same as oden's last words, just slightly modified. as he dies, oden says 煮えてなんぼのおでんに候/niete nanbono oden ni sourou, "the purpose of oden is to be boiled" (oden being a boiled dish).
orochi's surname, 黒炭/kurozumi, literally means 'black charcoal.' so here, during the reenactment of orochi's death (and accompanied by the people shouting along, just like oden was), hiyori says 燃えてなんぼの黒炭に候/moete nanbono "kurozumi" ni sourou- "the purpose of kurozumi/charcoal is to burn."

I love that Franky’s the one who’s crying the hardest but Zoro calling Momo ‘pathetic’ while smiling like that is pretty great, too.

In and of itself, it’s not bad that Yamato chose to stay behind. I actually really quite like that he decided to “find himself by following Oden’s footsteps”, I just wish Oda had gone about it differently and shown us how Yamato ended up coming to this decision

Chapter 1057 — Final curtain
Finally, the finale.
Not much to say about the chapter. Some “aha, gotcha” from Oda, too many recaps of Luffy’s influence on Momo, Nami’s wardrobe upgrade, and a hilarious “I double dare you, pathetic loser” exit.
But first:
Tumblr media
Not unexpected but a bit disappointing. Yamato’s wish to leave Wano was so explicitly stated and underlined and now they’re just… not going? Meh. Oh, well. Guessing we’ll see them at the final One Piece-battle, all grown up.
Tumblr media
Nobody believes you, Traf. Not even Chopper who believes Usopp.
Tumblr media
The crews reactions are just sweet and so in character. Chopper, Franky and Nami all teary-eyed, Tobin and Sanji a bit “aaaaw, isn’t that sweet”, Brook wondering what’s going on and Zoro all ribbing manly man, with a jaunty smile on his face.
Tumblr media
Go, yonko, go!
I just really like Nami’s outfit:
Tumblr media
Why so angry, Zoro?
And my fave chaos captains, at it again:
Tumblr media
You. Sad. Little. Easily. Provoked. Toads.
I love ‘em.
Tumblr media
WHEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Last but not least, a nice group photo of the new shogun and his retinue:
Tumblr media
Transport heavy chapter but snappy Law and Luf made up for most of it. I give it two snaps and a WHEEE!
It’s been a long ride but we made it. Now, to see what’s next!

One Piece chapter 1057 reaction and spoilers
I like that Yamato isn’t going with the crew though I wouldn’t have minded if he joined either. I think Yamato needs to find himself and become truly Yamato before venturing away from Wano tbh.
”First, I’ll hit him and then I’ll bite him!!” Momo is truly Luffy’s little brother.
I love that Momo got to have the flag. It’s very fitting.
Nami’s turtleneck and overall look is so cute.
I liked the Wano Kuni arc a lot. I think one of my favorite aspects of it was that it was structured like a play and it had a lot of Japanese fables and folklore references throughout. That said, there were times in which the pacing felt kind of wonky and I think some sections like the ice demon part went on longer than maybe they should have.
I’m looking forward to the road to Laugh Tale and beyond. It’ll be interesting to see who the final crew member will be (if I understood an interview a long time ago correctly). I’m also curious if we’ll get a vs. Marines section or if part of whatever Cross Guild is up to will gut the Marines and send us all down a different path for the Marines conclusion. It’s also going to be interesting to see how previous characters will factor into things like how Vivi’s back in play again even though we’ve not caught up to her properly yet. I’m also looking forward to seeing what this Joy Boy thing is all about and if fandom is right about it perhaps having horror elements. It’s going to be a fun ride and I’m looking forward to the conclusion.

One Piece Ch 1057 Thoughts
I love how this concluded!!! The way the battle of Onigashima is recounted through a dramatic stage play, Hiyori saying "Kurozumi was born to burn!" AUGH fantastic, amazing, so satisfying!
Kinemon and Momo freaking out over being left behind and the Strawhats not saying goodbye to them is so funny but also realistic. Momo was prepared to throw hands but then when he finally found them he just cried and hugged Luffy. I really appreciate how Oda stresses how Momo is still an 8 year old kid, and hasn't fully become the shogun yet. He has a long way to go. Momo crying and begging Luffy not to leave is so heartwarming, because this is a kid who just went through multiple traumatic experiences, and now has to shoulder the responsibility of running a whole nation.
And then Luffy said he thinks of Momo as a little brother!!!! Yes!!!! And he gives Momo the shittily painted SH flag lmao. But it's sweet bc they really kept that flag since day one huh? My heart-
This solves the problem of Wano being undefended, bc now with the SH flag there, no other crew would dare touch Wano without risking the wrath of the new Yonko.
I find it hilarious that Kid and Law decide that they're gonna be enemies now that the alliance is over, then Luffy's just like "Lmao totally sure" in the way that he totally believes he and Law are besties (after all they've been through they are definitely friends, Law doesn't wanna admit that.) I love the rivalry between the 3 captains, the way Luffy and Law were gonna take the safe way down and Kid just calls them cowards, and then they all sail off the waterfall!!! So funny!
And most importantly, Yamato isn't joining the Strawhats!?!? I was surprised, but also it makes perfect sense. He was built up to be the potential next crewmate, but with him gone, there would be one less powerhouse to defend Wano. And even then, Yamato hasn't met the rest of the Strawhats properly, only Luffy. And in the end, I think 10 members is the perfect number for Luffy's crew. I'm glad Yamato has decided to take his journey at his own pace.
Anyways this is a wonderful chapter with wonderful closure. Looking forward to the next arc! Hopefully we get to see what's going on with the Revolutionary Army... what happened at the reverie?? (or levelly idk with the translation anymore)

i love how casual conan is about solving this FBI level code, especially in his head! also, it's amazing that even with the addition of like 15 new agents in his house, not one of them questions why this 7 year old is so familiar with their top 4 agents or whatever lol

Bye, everyone! At this point in the manga I’m not sure if they’ll play a major role again but considering Pluton is still around...it’s certainly possible...

Walter woke to an empty bed, her side cold, and he got up, pulling on his boxer briefs, and walking out into the kitchen, seeing her standing at the island wearing his sweater that hit her about mid-thigh. Her hair was wet as he wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, pressing a kiss to her ear.
“Good morning.” He hummed and she echoed it, her hands sliding over his arms. “You took a shower?”
“You were out and I didn’t want to wake you.” She said and his arms tightened around her waist, holding her back against his chest. “So last night was…oof.”
“Yeah?” He asked, a smile pulling at his lips and she nodded with a sound.
“Toe-curlingly good. You’ve got some game, Detective Marshall.” Faith said and he smiled, burying his face in her shoulder.
"I'm guessing it's been a while for you." He said and she shrugged.
"Woodstock." She said and he snorted in amusement.
"Mud man?" He asked and she pinched his arm. "Ow!" Faith turned in his arms, sliding her hands over his chest as she looked up at him, her fingers weaving into the curls at the back of his head. “Faith, can I…ask about the scar?”
“If you really want to know, absolutely.” She said and he nodded. “It was back in the 1940s, and I was with a man named Caleb. I cared about him a lot.”
“Did you love him?” Walter asked and there was a pause before she nodded.
“The first man I loved since Sean.” She said, “He didn’t know what I was, but it started getting…difficult to hide it from him. He kept talking about marriage and kids, and I…eventually he was going to stop accepting my excuses why I couldn’t.”
“You told him.” He said and she nodded again, her eyes closing.
“I showed him my fangs, I explained what had happened to Sean and I and he…he didn’t take it well. Caleb was a devout Irish Catholic, went to Church every day, took Communion, whole nine yards.”
“What did he do?”
“After I told him and after I showed him, he left. He didn’t say anything, he just left with this blank look on his face.” Faith said, “I figured that was the end of it, I was never going to see him again, and I resigned myself to dealing with that.”
“But that’s not what happened.”
“No, it’s not what happened.” She said, “About a week later he came back and he attacked me. I don’t know where he had gotten a silver knife, but he had it. I wasn’t expecting it and he stabbed me in the chest, aiming for my heart. He missed. Silver, it…it’s like acid, it burns and it disfigures and it eats away at the skin and muscle. If he had hit my heart, I would have been dead in seconds and there wouldn’t have been anything I could have done about it.”
“What did you do?”
“When I didn’t immediately go down, he tried to stab me again, but I…I caught the knife.” She took one of her hands from his hair, showing him the thick scar running the width of her palm. “I got it away from him and I…I killed him. I drained him. I needed to. I was bleeding heavily from a silver wound and it was burning through my chest. I did what I had to do. I loved him, but he tried to kill me, so I killed him.” With a sigh, he took her hand in his, bringing it to his lips and kissing the scar on her palm before holding it to his chest over his heart. “My life is…violent, Walter. I try to make it as normal as possible, try to be as normal as possible, but there will be times when I may have to take a life in order to save my own. You need to decide if you really want to be in that life.”
“Faith, putting aside how you killed him, you were acting in self-defense.” Walter said, “He tried to kill you and you protected yourself. It was you or him. Your life or his. He wasn’t going to stop until one of you was dead. It’s no different than an attack victim getting the weapon away from their attacker and using it on them to save their own life. It was self-defense.” Reaching up, he held her face in his hands, stooping to look into her eyes. “So stop trying to get me to run, stop trying to push me away. I’ve made peace with who and what you are and I’m not going anywhere. I’m not going to hurt you like he did. Physically he may have missed, but he still stabbed you in the heart.” She stared at him for a moment before reaching up and pulling him down into a kiss, his eyes closing as he responded to her, parting her lips and deepening the kiss as he pressed her back against the kitchen island.
That night Faith stood behind the bar, wiping down glasses that had just come out of the dishwasher. It was slow as it was the day after Christmas but would slowly pick up the closer they got to New Year’s Eve, with the night itself being one of the busier nights. Walter was sitting at his booth, sipping at his usual can of Liquid Death, but she caught him looking at her from time to time, and it never failed to make her smile.
“You two had sex, didn’t you?” One of her waitresses asked and she nearly broke the glass she was holding.
“How--”
“Girl, you’re glowing.” She said, “And don’t think I haven’t seen the goofy looks you two have been giving each other since he got here. So spill. How was it?” Faith could only manage unintelligible sounds and the waitress smiled.
“Yeah?”
“Yes.”
“Man looks like he’d be a beast with his clothes off. Those sweaters and thermals he wears do nothing to hide how built he is and those tight jeans? Goddamn.” She said, “Now I’m jealous.”
“Be jealous while getting your tables refills, their drinks are looking a little low.” Faith said and she snorted, pushing away from the bar and heading over to her section.

Okay, read the chapter, and it is pretty much the spoilers I already read about it. Given that, I’ve had a bit of time to let my thoughts ruminate and I’ve come to the same conclusion as I did before: this is a horrible conclusion to Yamato’s arc.
Let’s first of all get it out of the way that I’m not saying this because I wanted Yamato to join the crew. I’m saying this because it’s a fault in Oda’s writing and there have been quite a few pitfalls within the Wano arc so far, and this one let my grievances with this arc simply boil over.
Oda is a great character writer. He’s proven that plenty of times before. Yet the biggest falls of this arc lie with characters, particularly unfinished business and loose ends and unfulfilling endings. For some reason, Oda’s taking to resolving character arcs and even deaths behind the scenes, and this is an absolutely horrible way to do it, because it either has no impact or becomes confusing or even frustrating. Let’s take Izou, one moment we see him fighting alongside his sister, alongside his fellow retainers, and next we hear of him he’s dead. It was a shock, not because he died, but because we did not see him die. He just is, one moment to the next, no context given, and that leaves you with an empty feeling, because you weren’t allowed to process it. The conclusion of Carrot’s character might just be the most insulting yet, on the same level or even more so than Yamato’s, because she’s been with the crew or at least with part of the crew for ages in our time, and she got shoved aside like she was nothing. Last we see of her she’s fighting and losing before Marco shows up, and the next she’s being crowned ruler of part of Zou, and it feels like an afterthought, something that goes “oh yeah, Carrot’s still there, better get that out of the way”. My feelings towards Carrot have always been pretty neutral, I don’t really care for her either way, but to conclude her arc like that? That’s downright criminal.
And as for Yamato, I’ve seen people gloating that he’s not joining the crew while so many were rooting for it, and those people are entirely missing the point. It’s not frustrating that Yamato didn’t join the crew because people wanted him to join the crew, but because his entire character arc so far has been about him joining the crew!!! Since the moment Yamato showed up, he’s been proclaiming his want and need to join the crew. He’s done it basically in every chapter he’s been in. The worst part is that Yamato’s past with Ace, the promise Ace made to let him join his crew, was genuinely touching and a perfect set-up for a common theme in one piece, namely Inherited Will. It feels like an absolute waste, to shove everything that makes Yamato, Yamato, aside like that, his wants and dreams and promises, not because Luffy didn’t want him to join, but because he somehow, out of the blue, decided to stay behind after all, because he’s “going to live like Oden.” If that’s the direction you want to go in, that’s perfectly fine!! Oda has the right to decide who he wants to be on the Straw Hat crew, it’s his story, but the way he resolved it was absolutely horrible. One moment Yamato’s saying he’s joining the Straw Hats, the next he says he’s changed his mind. We don’t get to see what happened there. We don’t get to see why he changed his mind. He just has. Because Oda didn’t want him to join, or at least not just yet. It’s incredibly weak.
The very least he could have done was show us scenes where Yamato comes to the realization that he wants to stay in Wano, for whatever reason. I’ve seen someone say that even something like Yamato realizing how little he knows about Wano, because of his years of imprisonment, and his want to get to know it better, which can also connect back to Oden, would have worked. Whether that would have been meager or not is up for debate, but it would have at least given us a reasoning and the time to process everything, and it would have made things at least feel alright. Everything now feels rushed and unsatisfying, and the conclusion of Yamato’s arc like this was the last straw, and shows that Wano is a mess when it comes to characters and satisfying conclusions.
