Sometimes I wish I’d never rescued him.

But sometimes I’m glad for it.

Like when I met his mother for the very first time.

An intimidating woman, as you might expect someone with a high body count—in both senses of the term—to be.

But she’d swept me up in a warm hug and thanked me over and over again for saving her son’s life.

I remember he blushed and grinned in that way that only he can do.

That shy little smile that I’m convinced exists solely for me and for me alone.

Like when he decided—after the fall of the Chosen One—that I was his.

Whether I liked it or not.

His family name became even more prominent than it already had been. A name of astounding political power and wealth.

And now, thanks to my teenaged savior complex and guilty conscience, I had not only his family in debt to me, but also the Malfoys, the Crabbes, and the Goyles.

My name was even more prominent than any of theirs.

It was power I didn’t want.

I never wanted my name to be tied to so many Death Eaters. That was the complete opposite of what I stood for.

But I didn’t have a choice in the matter.

Some History: Spamton was my first petz adopted, so I may have "Starter Pokemon fondness" for him but I do feel he's got a lot of charm to him. But why get such a strange breed as my first petz for my 2022 return to Petz? Because seeing the Spamton catz in the originating blog was actually why I even got back into Petz in the first place!

I remember coming across a very strange video and knew I had to see this blog for myself and I still remember how much I laughed seeing this breed for the first time! It was too ridiculous a thought mixing Spamton with Catz! But the more I combed through the posts, the more I started to get the feeling to give the breed a try. I already had a bit of an itch to pick up Petz again, so I did and got me Spamton from the AC! Description: The trademark of the Spamton breed is a mixed combination of traits from the chinchilla Persian (having high insanity) and the orange shorthair (low confidence), which is something Spamton definitely shows! The insanity fits with the base inspiration while the fearfulness creates that signature shaky walk, like if the cat was glitchy. Fitting the glitchiness theme, Spamton catz are kind of high maintenance due to getting sick easily, I know most uses of my medicine have gone to Spamton and my other Spamcatz.

More on the individual side, Spamton does not appear to be all that cuddly but that is most likely from his being very playful and how I don't like to leave my petz without toyz in case I have to step away from my PC. He does eventually start to yowl out dial up noises if I stay idle for too long. As expected, new things get him running at first but when he does bolster his courage he is quick to play first before using items as intended, whatever he can't pick up in his mouth he gives it an open paw smack immediately!

Some of his favorite toyz I've noticed include the Plush Opossum and Green Nursery Turtle Plush I got from Mythic Silence's website, when given choices to play with a lot of toyz he tends to prefer these, he also has a pillow preference as he will sleep on the Blue Pillow but never sit still on the Red Pillow. But if I had to pin an absolute favorite toy, it's the Music Box! He is a dancing machine! The moment the Music Box starts up he scampers over to start dancing!

With other petz he gets along fine with most of them, never one to start fights. With more belligerent petz he's usually the one running away! His closest affinities would be with Crystal the Furfrou and, not surprisingly, his mate Bliss. His interactions with mice on the other hand... He's actually pretty good at catching them. Not perfect, but the mice should still be careful! Good thing his favorite flavor is turkey and not mouse, but getting caught must be a miserable experience for the little squeakers as I've seen him yeet a mouse across the Family Room before!

Ravi's Foot: Music Films Book Blog 9 (June 2021)

My positive feelings about the book in June were saved by a late month visit to the BFI Library. While that trip threw up the usual anxieties that come from research, namely the opening of more doors on things to watch and read, it also soothed and made it feel like progress was being made even if, yet again, I fell behind my writing target.

The time for worry has gone though. We are expecting a new addition to our clan in a matter of weeks now and I can only do so much in a day and that will become even less when little fella pops out (my wife hopes he literally does that as she is now vividly recalling her labour with our daughter Tessa nearly 5 years ago). My days soon will have new demands and the book will have to take an even further backseat to new life, new role etc. But that’s the price of trying to write, unpaid, on top of full time job and family life. So as you can tell, I’m feeling pretty sanguine about the prospect of asking for an extension.

The sanguine feelings are helped by another month where I was on top of the watching. I’m not drifting behind there and I’m coming to the end of the really intense watching and rewatching. Another month and a bit. Then it’s a few odds and sods and some bits for my ‘further watching’ chapter, that I am writing in lieu of a traditional conclusion.

Also, finished my second notebook for this project, which feels great. It really feels like I have the basis of the book in these pages and am still hopeful that i can find time over the summer and through my new professoriate role to work on getting the words from these pages to a screen.

Also early in June, I chatted with a good friend about a podcast project that will come out of this book and period of focus on music docs. More on that down the line but it felt great to have a buddy on board for capturing some of the interviews I’ve done and want to do and hear around music documentary.

So, about that library visit. It was fantastic to be back in the BFI Library for the first time since my doctorate. In amongst the knowledge and history of this form I love, working on a book that will be published by the BFI. Felt like an honour and a responsibility but more than that, and maybe more importantly, it was fun. It was to read about specific films and the music doc in general. I enjoyed it. I’m glad I went. I can’t to get back, because yes, believe it or not, there is more to read.

The month started with a rewatch of Caroline Catz’s sublime Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and Legendary Tapes ahead of talking to her for an episode of The Cinematologists. To coincide with that I watched the equally wonderful but very different Sisters With Transistors. After that it was a real mix of the last of the concert and tour films and the watching of films that I was going to include in an ‘innovations’ chapter. However, upon watching, I think I’m going to condense the milestones and innovations chapter into one big one. It makes more sense. There weren’t that many films in the ‘innovation’ watching that don’t or haven’t pop up elsewhere, so upon reflection I think it would look a bit odd. It was nice this month to rewatch the film that was the first academic book chapter I ever published, the Beastie Boys’ perfect concert film Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That! alongside beautiful examples of films that push the music film form such as The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 and Mistaken For Strangers.

Oxford: a twink?

We here at ouidius dot tumblr dot com are concerned with higher matters: knowledge; homosexuality; poncy institutions for higher education. So, to prove that my blog is a complete fucking shitshow, I thought I’d combine the three and write a thesis that’s been brewing in my head for about nine years now: Is The University of Oxford a twink?

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Oxford – Oxon. if you’re feeling particularly pretentious – is far too old to classify as a twink in the truest sense. Aside from it being a mass of buildings, this is by far the most serious argument against my reasoning. However, buildings don’t age in the same way humans do, and institutions even less so: Oxford, eternal, merely becomes more and more ripped in a knowledgeable sort of way. And besides, building-lifts are a lot better at restoring one’s youth than face-lifts are.

Anyway. Point 1: the construction materials. Not only are the vast majority of Oxford’s buildings made of the same stone, the stone is sandstone: basically the building equivalent of being a flaky blond bitch who ghosts you after mediocre sex. Ah, you say, the gentle reader, but what about Keble? Well, Keble is the weird gingery facial hair that’s there for some reason because there isn’t any red hair in the family, what’s up with that. As for Catz… well, everyone has an embarrassing tattoo somewhere.

Point 2: weirdly competitive. Like, okay, we get it, Cambridge is that smart kid who gives off gay vibes but is also way too busy sitting around studying and also rowing and also running Footlights, but there have got to be better ways to get its attention than being all, “Oh look, it’s the other place, lmao god I’d rather be a leper than a tab”. Come on. It’s obvious what the Boat Race is about. Just… go for it, buddy.

Point 3: Cliquey. As. Hell. Even ignoring the colleges, what’s with the Russell Group? The fucking G5? Two entire groups to bitch about how shit everyone else is, one of which is dedicated to bitching about how shit everyone else in the other group is. And that’s just what’s going on within the UK. You know it’s that one bitch who’s sweet to your face then goes off and gossips behind your back about your performance despite being a pillow princess who just lay there while you did all the work. I’m fine, thanks for asking.

Point 4: Like, the whole of Brideshead Revisited. Sebastian Flyte did not die for you to claim he didn’t go to Twink University.

Look, I get it. It’s a difficult proposition to get your head around when first thought about, what with seeming all old and distinguished and all that. But let me tell you: it’s not. If Oxford were a person, he’d have downed like an entire bottle of port then thrown up in Cambridge’s window in the time it took me to type this. Probably sent flowers to apologise, too. Search your heart, gentle reader. Oxford is indubitably a disaster twink.

Once you’ve decided that you want to pursue a career in acting, you’ll need a good plan of action on how to become an actor with no experience. Like we talked before in how to start an acting career column, planning is key. Your main goal will be to expand your acting resume with skills, experience and training. Let’s check to 8 TIPS ON HOW TO BECOME A CHILD ACTOR

There are many things inexperienced budding thespians can focus on to advance their careers, and they’re all interrelated. Some of those involve looking for jobs. And others are simply complementary to your acting career that will eventually result in you finding and booking more auditions.

So let’s get down to it. Here are the 8 tips on how to become a child actor with no experience and how to do to it in the most efficient way possible.

1) Study! Study! Study! Enrol your child in Acting Classes, Improv and Scene Study. Don’t put your kid “out there” on auditions and interviews until he or she is truly ready to go out. *HMB has an ever-growing list of wonderful acting schools, coaches and camps.

2) Get Experience! Do student films, local theatre and school play.

3) Get Head Shots! And we mean good headshots, taken by a professional photographer who specializes in babies, kids and teens. Make sure you leave with both Commercial and Theatrical looks. This is your child’s calling card and first impression with casting 0directors. Check out some of HMB’s favourite photographers here.

4) Get an Agent Submit to the top talent agencies for kids in your market after having researched them thoroughly. Meet with them in person before committing.

5) Join online casting sites like Actors Access, Casting Frontier, Casting Networks (aka L.A. Casting), Catz, etc.

6) Network through and read up at industry sites: We recommend Hollywood Mom Blog, Looking Ahead Program, SAG/AFTRA Young Performers, and BizParentz.org

7) Keep your credit card in your pocket! Don’t pay anyone for “advice” or “services.” Other than acting classes, agent-requested headshots and getting set up on the legitimate casting websites. You don’t need to fork over ANY money. Stay away from conventions, weekend seminars and packaged deals that promise to “make your kid a star!”

8) Remember Show-Biz is a business. Once you’ve decided as a family to take this journey, keep your commitments (like classes and auditions), even if you’re having a bad day

We’re having fun staying warm this week in Montréal, whether we’re outside on skates or contemplating Chagall in the museum, watching a hockey game or dancing all night, taking in a show or ringing in the city’s 375th anniversary.

Winter’s all fun and games with Montréal’s 375th anniversary Les Hivernales: this weekend have fun at free and family-friendly Fête des neiges, transforming Parc Jean-Drapeau into a playground with a massive ice-sculpted Pirate ship, snow tubing, a Ferris Wheel, live shows and more activities. Watch a game, meet former Montréal Canadiens players and listen to live music by The Planet Smashers and more at hockey tournament Classique Montréalaise, Jan. 28 and 29 in Parc Jean-Drapeau. Cross-country ski and snowshoe with the Grande Traversée du Saint-Laurent, a winter sports odyssey stopping on Jan. 28 in Mount Royal Park. Party in the Old Port at electronic music festival Igloofest, pairing exquisite visuals with electronic music by Laurent Garnier, Oniris and more artists on Friday and Eats Everything, Catz ‘n Dogz and more on Saturday, while Kannibalen Records gets weekend #4 going on Feb. 2. Day or night, try Igloofest’s Nordik ice slide on Place Jacques-Cartier or visit the Nordik Village next to Quai Jacques-Cartier.

Active winter days

Montrealers aren’t afraid of a little cold weather – get outside and play in the snow with them, but be sure to dress for it and follow up with hot chocolate. Take advantage of the many free things to do this winter: go ice skating at Mount Royal Park’s Beaver Lake and Park La Fontaine; or spin the giant art-embellished zoetropes of this year’s Luminothérapie interactive art exhibition, open until Jan. 29. There’s ice skating in the Old Port and at Olympic Stadium Esplanade’s Village Mammouth , which also boasts a tube slide, entertainment and an activity area for kids. Indoors, things gets tropical at the Biodôme and Botanical Garden, just two of the many worlds at the Montréal Space for Life. And can cheer on NHL greats the Montréal Canadiens as they take on the Buffalo Sabres on Jan. 31 at the Bell Centre.

Find a quiet place to have a cocktail, warm up with food and drink next to Montréal’s coziest fireplaces or go for something different at the city’s new bars and restaurants. Though Isaiah Rashad’s Friday show at L’Astral is sold out, the venue thumps with Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic and DJ Zone on Saturday. Also on Jan. 28, choir and orchestra Choeur Classique de Montréal performs Messe solennelle de sainte Cécile and Requiem by Maurice Duruflé at Place des Arts, while Cleveland indie-rockers Cloud Nothings and openers LVL UP play Théatre Fairmount. Later that night, soak up the good vibes of Nuit Chromatic at Moment Factory, with tunes for dancing by Lexis (Music Is My Sanctuary), Stram and 2GZ, get your groove on as Jazz Amnesty Sound System presents The Stevie Wonder Songbook with a stellar live band at La Sala Rossa, or dance to EDM by Laidback Luke and Jillionaire at New City Gas.
