If I Survive Another Night

A/N: holy shit. So... @castleamc gave me this idea like... 8 months ago? And since then I've terrified to actually get on to write this because I wanted it to be perfect, and then on january I thought "it is time to do this fic" but life happened. So now, after a long time Michelle, I DID IT! The Poe Ring fic is finally here! Not gonna lie, I'm a bit nervous to post this because it's been a while since I do longer fics, but I'm excited so... yeah... I'm gonna stop now. The title comes from the song that also inspired this fic: "Meteor Showers" by Andy Kong. Go give it a listen and cry with me.

Summary (and the message that started it all): Right before a mission Poe wants gives you his mother's ring, you make him promise to come back to give it to you, with a proper proposal after you are both back. But you disappear during the mission, and Poe is left to grieve you just to find you years later with a promise still hanging in the air and a ring still hanging around his neck.

Everything smelled like fuel, metal, and oil, the smell rushing up your nostrils as you zipped your pilot suit up. Your brain couldn't stop running laps around the danger of the mission, and if adrenaline were a tactile thing, you were sure you could feel it already running through your veins. You loved it. The rushing, the jumping to your ship, the sound of engines powering up: as much as it got you nervous, you could never get tired of the feeling it all brought. 

That's what brought you two together; Poe and you were addicted to it all, but as your relationship grew stronger and deeper, that same feeling began turning into fear. It was inevitable to think of the what if's, even after all those years and missions you can never shake away the idea of the unavoidable fate that might catch you one day.

There’s always this moment where your head starts talking to the Maker, to the stars, to whoever may listen, spiraling you into those dark thoughts. That is until a hand grabs your wrist, making you turn around to meet the pair of brown eyes that have always managed to make all those feelings sink away.

"Are you ready?" Poe's question, far from being a check-up, is more of a permission to drag you away from preparing your ship.

"I am, why?" You look for his face as he looks down to the floor, his feet tapping and hands fidgeting by his sides. "Poe?" When you grab his cheek he can breathe again, calming just for a few seconds. “What’s going on?”

“I have an idea.” He blurts out.

“For the mission? I think we all have it quite clear but if you want to-”

“About us.” Poe interrupts you, grabbing you by the shoulders, his thumbs drawing soft circles on your skin before blurting it all out: "Would you marry me?"

His words are said with a whisper but are as certain as everything he always says, as his every I love you and his every see you when we're back. His calloused fingers sneak out of his pocket holding his mother's precious ring in between them, the chain still going through it, the one you love so much to see hanging around his neck and that now he is offering to you, wide-eyed and looking at you with so much love you feel like you might combust.

"Poe... right- right now?" You stutter, looking from the ring to his expecting face with a smile.

"It is a dangerous mission," Poe whispers again, his head rushing somewhere among the stars. "And I want you to have it just... just in case..."

His words hang in suspense floating between you, a phrase that he doesn't want to end.

"That sounds a lot like a goodbye, Dameron." With soft fingers you trace his cheek, pulling a smile out of him. It is your job to ground him, to put those fears on the back of his head as you always manage to do.

"It's not, I promise, but I- I've been thinking about it for a while and- I want to be with you for the rest of my life and I couldn't let one more mission go by without you knowing that." With a small step, he closes the distance between your bodies, your foreheads just millimeters away from each other.

"I want nothing else in this life but to be your wife." Taking the ring from his fingers you look at it for a second before grabbing the chain and placing it around his neck again. "And yes, Poe, my answer is yes. But I need you to promise me something.”

"Anything, sweetheart." Poe nods, lost in the smile that's making your face light up.

“Kriff, Poe,” You giggle unexpectedly, blinking away tears that you didn’t know you had. He joins you in the laughter, holding your face to pull it to his, kissing you softly with a smile. “I was not expecting this.”

“That’s the idea, love.” Poe, that cheeky man, has the audacity to wink at you at that moment.

"Keep it safe until we get back to base, and then you can give it to me." Kissing his lips softly you seal your promise, holding onto his pilot suit for dear life. "That's my way to make you come back to me."

A soft chuckle leaves Poe's lips when he kisses you again, more urgently this time, his tongue sneakily finding yours in that tempting way he does. His hands grab you too, holding your waist not wanting to let you get away, pressing your bodies together in a desperate kiss that neither one of you wants to stop until Snap's "get a room, you two!" makes you break away.

"I promise." He speaks against your lips, pecking them quickly and moving to kiss the tip of your nose after. "I promise I'll come back to you, if you come back to me too."

"You know I will." You smile hopeful, taking one last good look at him. "Come find me when we're back, Dameron, and propose to me properly.”

"When we're back," With a laugh, Poe squeezes your hand and begins to walk away. "I promise!"

It's easy with him, it always is. You laugh together as he walks away with the promise of him, of you two forever by each other's side starting the second you come back.

Except, you don't come back.

You don't come back and it almost drives Poe insane. He sees your ship being taken away, an invisible force dragging you to the depths of that dreadnought that he knows he can't fight. He tries, dammit he tries. He rushes to you through the stars, shooting at everything and nothing at the same time, avoiding backfire for as long as he can... until you disappear inside.

He’s in a frantic rush from the second he gets back to base and for the next couple of weeks, tracking every ship he can find, creating elaborate routes that could lead to you. He doesn’t sleep - not that he can, anyway, not without you next to him -, he barely eats if not for whatever Snap or Jessika manage to bring him from the mess hall. But after almost a month, it is up to them to break the news: “We found her ship.” Snap is the one who starts, making Poe’s sunken eyes look at him with hope. Poe feels himself asking thousands of questions: Where was it? Where did it come from? Where is she now?

“Poe,” Jess sits in front of him, grabbing his hand with both of hers. “It was launched into space empty and it landed on Yaku with no gear, no fuel tank, not even a seat. It was just scraps.” Poe looks between them, waiting for an answer to all his questions. “She couldn’t have been inside. Poe… she’s gone.”

“She’s not. She can’t. How can you say that?” His voice breaks as much as his heart does, standing up almost offended by what they’re saying. Snap tries to reach to him, grabbing his shoulder to try and calm him down, but Poe shrugs it away. “She’s out there, I know she is! I know it! They have her, we have to- we have to find her, she’s alive she-” Tears fall down his face when he looks at his friends’ faces, your friends’ faces, who are also grieving you and missing you… just not as much as he is.

“I’m sorry, Poe.” Snap is able to wrap his arms around his shaking body, but Poe can only feel the metal of the ring digging into his chest, the already piercing feeling on his chest amplifying with every sob that breaks free from his lungs.

It is in that one-month mark when Poe mourns another empty casket and he cries your name out to the stars, he reluctantly lets go of you. Not of your things though, maybe not just yet.

Grief hits Poe in different ways on different days. Sometimes it is in bravery, focusing his brain on the single goal of success; other times it makes him more reckless than usual, almost as if he wanted to get caught or, to his relief, turned into stardust. Whether A or B, maybe that’s what gets him back to you. 

It goes on like that for months, and he hates the idea of giving up but he realizes he has to. Poe becomes bolder then, he takes on the hardest tasks and the most dangerous missions that Leia throws at him. It’s the most self-destructive form of therapy he knows, but it helps. 

When the half-year mark comes around your face is already showing up less and less in his dreams, he tried sleeping around again, but by this time he realizes there’s no use - just when he’s too drunk or too hyped up on adrenaline.

Your birthday comes around after ten months; he picks up flowers, and he gathers some people to drink in your honor. He’s smiling again now that your memory is more of a happy moment of his life.

One year and three months go by when he sees Snap running over to him, screaming his name out of breath. “She’s here!” He says, and Poe doesn’t understand for a second. “She’s back, Poe. She’s with the General, she asked for you.” It clicks in him then, heart beating faster and faster against his throat when his feet begin to run.

He stood motionless when he heard your voice and time seemed to stop when he saw you there. Poe stood in the corner of the room you were in, listening to everything you went through to escape. Leia clenched your hand on top of the table as your voice wavered around the events of the last 15 months of your life; escaping the First Order, flying from system to system, being tracked down and chased. Every step of your road made Poe's stomach turn and sink deeper into his body as he heard the fear still trapped in your voice, and how he couldn't do anything to stop it.

He did try, though, which for some reason made him feel worse.

"Poe?" Your voice makes him leave the shadows of the room and pulls him towards you.

"Hi," Poe whispered, fidgeting his fingers as he spoke. It was strange for him, and words didn't seem to find their way from his brain to his mouth. For once, he was speechless, looking at you and not able to come up with any thought.

"Hey," Your voice struck him, making him shudder at the memory of its sound. He smiled at you with a silent sigh, a smile that you matched.

Leia stood up slowly, giving your hand one last squeeze. "I believe you have some catching up to do." Her head signaled towards the pilot, who was immediately by your side to help you stand up. "She's dehydrated, Poe, and needs a lot of rest," Leia informed him, useless as it was since his head still could not process you were in front of him again.

"Y-yeah. Yes, General, I'm on it." Poe stuttered quickly after a beat, noticing how tired your entire body looked.

"Take care of her," was all she said, with a kind smile and a gentle touch to your arm, before letting you both go. 

Poe's hand guided the small of your back towards the hall, from where he followed close to your back, watching you walk slowly through the halls that had been your home all those months ago. Your fingers ghosted over the code once you reached your door, typing it as if not a day had passed. 

You remembered, of course, you did, Poe knew it in his heart.

What he didn't expect was you to feel so foreign in the room you once shared. You wondered around, your eyes exploring the space and your hands feeling every surface. You sat on the bed, fingertips caressing the pillow in which you used to sleep, the one that for so long Poe clung to in hopes he wouldn't forget how you smelled.

He stood motionless again as you got used to the space again, somehow also getting used to you being in that space again. After closing the door behind him he got your eyes back on him again. He leaned against the door, sighing and basking in the fact that you were home.

"You didn't change it much." Your voice wasn't as bright as it used to be. It was older, wiser even, with something behind it that pulled Poe towards you.

"There was no time after- after everything." He reasoned, walking around a little just to distract himself. There was no point, is what he wanted to say - there was no you. He sat opposite you on the bed, not sure if it would all be right as it was before. Could he go back to hold you as he used to? Were you ready to jump into him again? Was the last promise said before the mission still a promise?

"I always liked it like this." Teary eyes looked away from him and took one last tour around the room.

"You always did," Poe confirmed, wishing he could say more. Under the lights of the room, Poe could notice everything in you that had changed; your sunken eyes and tired gaze gave away how little you had rested the last few days, your cheekbones were now more pronounced, your hair long and dull, the bones on your shoulders more visible and sharp. Hell had gone through you, and Poe could only imagine what you did to survive.

"How did you escape?" Your tense shoulders almost made him regret asking, but he couldn't stop himself. He had to know, he had to make sure you were real and you were there.

“A stormtrooper.” You replied softly. “He helped me, he didn’t make out but he helped me. 

Poe examined your every expression of thankfulness and pain and made a mental note to thank that anonymous hero later that day. “When did you reach out?”

“I found a way to contact the General a couple of months ago.” You looked at him again, both of you looking as heartbroken as the other one felt. "I told Leia not to tell you, I couldn't risk it."

"I know." He barely let you finish speaking when he replied. He didn't need a justification, not from you, not back then, and not ever. “I tried to reach you too.”

“I know.” You said back, smiling at your mirroring words with tears already hinting to come out. “I was so close to coming back so many times. But it wasn't that easy, Poe. I tried, I did, I tried so so hard! But I-" Your voice cut with emotion, making Poe's stomach tighten with anger and impotence. "I couldn't. They tracked me down, every single time.” You sobbed desperately, the memory of it all still visible in your eyes. Poe could only hold your hand. “I was held prisoner, I was a hostage, I was trapped and tortured for weeks. They... they hit me and touched me, and..." Your words made his throat close, the sob interrupting your words making a lump form in his throat. "I couldn't risk getting caught again and going back to that."

Poe looked at you in silence, knowing there were no words to make up for what you were telling him. He moved closer to you, grabbing your face between his hands to clean the tears off your face until you looked up at him with watery eyes.

"I don't know how long I was in there, Poe. It feels so long ago, but I also feel like it was yesterday. It could've been a week or it could've been months, and I was ready to just- to give up." Those feelings were too familiar to him, he knew better than anyone what you meant, except he was a prisoner for three days, not for as long as you were. “And I kept thinking: just survive one more day.”

"I'm sorry," He whispered, not trusting his voice. 

"Don't be." You tried your best at a smile. "I know you looked for me, and I know they caught you too. I heard it all. The pilot that was rescued by a stormtrooper was a pretty popular story in the outer rim." Despite your current state of tiredness and the tears that kept falling from your eyes, Poe was thankful to see the hint of a smile caused by his antics. 

"Thank the maker for those faulty troopers." He jokes, making a teary laugh leave your lips. You sighed, your shoulders finally relaxing and your body feeling warm again with his hands going up and down your arms. It was home, Poe was it, with his warm eyes welcoming you back and his hands letting you know he was ready to hold you until you feel better.

“Let me run you a shower.” Poe kissed your forehead and gave a soft caress to your jaw, checking in with you before moving away after you nod. He walks you to the bathroom and starts running the shower, eyeing you carefully as you begin to remove your shirt. His hands replace yours with soft fingertips lifting the fabric over your head and tossing it aside, Poe looks at every scar, he’s got a few new ones on his body too, but yours hurt deeper even on his skin.

He feels your hands reaching to the hem of his shirt and before you can move he removes the shirt himself. Skin on skin, you both remembered how it felt to feel each other so close, birthmarks and spots were traced gently, his lips kissing you softly were goosebumps appeared.

Your hands smoothed down his broad shoulders to his chest, trapping the ring with your fingers just as you held it 15 months ago. "You still have it." You noted, smiling to yourself.

"Of course I do," Poe whispered again. "I promised." He shrugged as if it weren't a big deal.

"More than a year ago." You reasoned, confused as to why he still has it.

His hand holds the back of your neck when you look up into his eyes, talking about promises as if they had been made just days ago. "It is yours, it has always been yours and it will always be."

You cling to his arm when a sob breaks through your chest. His name is all you can say, the same love that pulled you through the deepest corners of your own self and from the galaxy, meeting you eye to eye to remind you that you were back home.

In the safety of Poe's arms, you let go of every tear and every emotion that you had been holding, knowing Poe was there to catch them. You are finally able to breathe again, safe and sound with the man who had been loving you even when you were away.

"And besides, I promised, didn't I?" He scoots closer to you, foreheads touching together as he echoes the last thing you said to each other: "When we get back, we just never said when."

"Oh, Poe." You cry, collapsing into his arms. You hadn't forgotten the way his arms felt around you, but you did forget how easy it was for every problem to disappear once he envelops you against his chest.

“This is still not a proper proposal, though.” He jokes, pulling back to look at you. “I’m planning the big one.”

With a smile, you kiss him. Finally, Poe wants to scream, but he settles for holding your cheeks and kissing you back. The feeling of your lips against his erases every grieving thought away from him, he is finally complete again.

“I don’t need that anymore,” You say when you part for air. “I only need you.”

“You already got that.”

He was yours, always and forever, and if you ever needed a reminder of it the ring that he slipped on your finger that night, with your bodies still tangled together as you remembered how it was like to be touched by him, would be more than enough forevermore.

It’s my 1 year blogiversary today! 💖

I don’t have any fic celebrations or giveaways planned (I’m working on a WIP backlog at the moment), but I did want to make a post just to say “thank you” and “I love you” to some of the incredible mutuals, friends, authors, readers, and artists that I’ve met during my year here.

I have somehow written and posted over 200,000 words of fanfic since I started, made dozens of new friends, screamed incoherently at writers about hundreds of fics, collected 900+ followers (only 800 of which are Russian spambots), made over 7000 posts, beta-read dozens of pieces, and received countless lovely and kind and thoughtful comments on my fics.

He has many scars

Littered across his body like stars across the night sky

A myriad of reflections of his many experiences

Each one with its own story, usually a reminder of some great battle for his life

You love each one

Truly, in your eyes they’re a proof to you both that he’s still here, still alive, still resilient

You’ve always showered each one with affection,

Kissing and caressing them gently

You want to show him that you care about each life he’s lived

Because, to you, they’ve made him who he is

But there’s one in particular you’ve always been fascinated by

A white-faded curve on his left cheek

Right next to his smile line

It curves downward towards his jawline

Making you curious

And adding character to an already-beautiful face

Where did it come from?

Does it hurt him much still?

What causes a scar like that?

You want to ask him, to know the origins of it

Something about that one scar just compels you like nothing else

Each time you caress his cheek, your thumb traces it

Each kiss given in greeting or affection lands right on the scar

Your gaze instinctively finds it on his face instantly anytime your eyes raise to meet his

Finally, one day, you ask

He gives you a playfully warm smile, his eyes twinkling with amusement

Of course he’s noticed your fascination with that one scar

“Nothin’ interestin’, I promise,” he assures

You absolutely do not believe him

If you write fanfictions for any Pedro Pascal characters and/or you're a visual art creator (graphics, gifsets, fanart) with a love for our fandom's fanfic writers, this event is for you! You can register here until November 26 (you can expect our message about your giftee a few days later), and the gifters will post their arts on December 23.
