Chronicles of a Parisian Dumbass 18
i'm sorry this is a few days late!! it's been real Headless Chicken time around here for a number of reasons, but, here you go!
this chapter is also known as, "LUKANETTE SHIPPERS COME GET Y'ALL JUICE: Part 1"
to: Marinette hey… um. hey. just. checking if you’re okay. those postcards came out beautiful.
from: Marinette shouldn’t i be asking you that?
to: Marinette i’ll live. i’m a Couffaine, “chaos” is practically my middle name. …so… how can i pay you? cash? one of those money apps?
from: Marinette just get better 😊 that’s all.
Getting better shouldn’t feel like such a tall order. But like with other affairs, Luka will just say it’s his fault and call it a night.
It only takes a few days for his knee to go from “bulging, throbbing mess” to “sort of tolerable,” and he doesn’t understand how the time is so annoying and yet so relieving. He has to call out of work because there’s no way they—or Juleka— will let him bike or even hobble around Paris with an injury like that. But it opens up his schedule for more band practice. And more chances to talk to Bubbles. Or, more accurately, convince Bubbles that he can still hold his own and shred the setlist to pieces.
And yeah, he tries his hand at perfecting Marinette’s song, but it barely comes out any better. Whatever melody is swirling in his head sounds wrong on paper, and even worse on guitar. Checking the posts of his drafts doesn’t help, either; the likes and comments and reposts have mostly come to a halt, no matter how many times he bumps the latest version to the top of his profile.
He thinks, for the most part, that it’s doomed to live in his head forever. And he hates it. Hates that it doesn’t sound right or good. Hates that he’ll never get to share what he really hears, what he really feels... with anyone.
The best he can manage is hopping on the metro, with his guitar and his amp and his busking license tied around the belt loop of his jeans, and finding just the right stone ledge or just the right bench at the bridge with the padlocks. Sometimes he doodles, strums out whatever comes to mind and hopes it resonates with someone. Some then he takes requests or plays fan favorites, the kind that earns him a smile or even an extra euro in his case.
He’s got to make the money somehow.
One time, he plays by the fountain at the Place des Vosges. For the parents who need something to tide them over while their children ask for balloons and skin their elbows and ride the carousel one too many times. He thinks about angles, and hearing colors, and pear tarts fresh from the oven, and business cards that look like flyers. He thinks about the color blue, too. Ocean blue. But he doesn’t play it. He’ll save it for a better occasion, when he’s not weighed down with cutting deals and combing through backstory that he’s not quite sure he’ll ever earn. When he’s not thinking about Marinette dropping a few coins in his case at the padlock bridge and almost looking guilty about it.
He shakes his head and gathers his paltry earnings for the day into the side pocket of his gig bag, stretches his leg to see if it’s worth putting weight on again. It doesn’t protest too much, thank God; at least he’ll be home before it gets too dark. But the sound of music stops him once he crosses the street. A radio. And it’s playing outside.
And it’s just over his head.
It takes him one moment to realize he’s stopped in front of Tom & Sabine’s, and another to look up. There is Marinette, watering some flowers in a box and resting her chin in her hand. Humming along to the music. when she meets his eyes, it sounds like her. Like exactly what he’s been looking for. Good, and right, and perfect.
And... sad.
The one thing Luka’s grateful for is that he wasn’t standing there long. Instead of fear or panic, he’s only caught up in mild surprise, and to his relief, so is Marinette. He readjusts his weight on his good leg, and he manages a wave with his free hand. “You know,” he says with a weak laugh, “we really gotta stop meeting like this.”
The smile Marinette gives him in return is just as sad as her humming, but harder to read. He doesn’t know if it’s telling her she agrees or disagrees, or if she doesn’t want him to go. Or if it’s something else entirely, something he’s not a part of. “Hey,” she says, leaning over the balcony to get a better look at him. Or maybe just at his leg.
He glances down at it, gives it a little shake, and shrugs in the face of the urge to wince. “It’ll be fine,” he says as nonchalantly as he can. “I’ll be back at work in a day or two. But, y’know... let me know if you’d rather I go busk somewhere else.”
Which, he’ll admit, is code for, let me know if you don’t want to see me anymore. He’s given her enough reasons for her to feel that way.
If Marinette’s somehow waded through to the real meaning of it, she doesn’t show it, and Luka doesn’t know if that’s a good thing. Instead, she leans over to pause her music, brushes her hair out of her eyes, and says, “Do you... wanna come upstairs?”
Well.
He wasn’t expecting that.
Luka can’t get any words out, so all he does is nod dumbly and limp toward the side door. On a better day, he might have been able to scale the bakery and hop over the balcony railing, if all his work on the Liberty is anything to go by. But maybe his guitar wouldn’t necessarily appreciate that. And neither would Mr. Dupain or Mrs. Cheng; he’d probably scare them half to death. Not to mention that maybe this is the sort of stunt reserved for Actually Cool People, and Luka is only ever Actually Cool in the recesses of his imagination or with a guitar in his hands.
Marinette meets him by the side door and lets him in with barely a sound. It doesn’t seem like she’s trying to sneak him in, the way she might have if they were in high school. If she might have even pulled off something like that in high school. But they slip into the apartment with Marinette’s whispered explanation that her father’s closing up shop and her mother’s getting ready for a dinner date. It reminds him, as they head to her room and she shows him how to hoist up onto the balcony, of all the dates his ma tried to go on. And how one day, she just stopped trying, and didn’t shed a tear over it.
Maybe, he thinks as he leaps up on the weight of one leg, he’s built for something like that. Or should be.
Marinette lets him take the deck chair so he can rest his leg, despite his weak insistence that he’s fine. She doesn’t go back to watering the flowers, or even leaning on the railing and giving the city that wistful look he thought was only reserved for Adrien Agreste. Instead, she sits cross-legged on the floor, and she watches him, never lingering on one part of him for too long. Like she’s expecting him to say something. Maybe it’s payback, in the end, for all the times she must have caught him.
“Hey,” he finally says to break through the quiet. “That song you were listening to... Can you play it again?”
She jolts to attention then, nods without a word, makes a grab for her phone. With a few taps, the song bleeds to life with a few piano notes, the rise of a few violins, the thrum of a cello. Luka thinks he’s heard this before, once. The words are all in English, so he doesn’t quite know what they’re saying. All he knows is the blue. It’s electric, it’s swelling in his chest, buzzing under his skin, closing his eyes. It sounds...
Like the ocean.
Like a world Marinette’s pulling him into. Her world. And he’s stepping into it. Just for a while. Or like, perhaps, just for that while, they’re meeting in the middle.
She must know what the song is about. She can wade through the colors and the sound, right to the words, as she sings to herself in accented English, as her voice dips low but not quite low enough, as her breath snags on the notes it can’t hold for very long. Maybe that’s why she seems so sad. Or maybe it’s something else.
“That song sounds like your eyes,” he says once the violins fade. It sounds like what I’ve been looking for.
Marinette looks at him like he’s lost his mind, and maybe he has. But there’s a softness to it. Like maybe no one’s ever said anything like that to her before. Like, secretly, she’d spent years wishing someone would. “What?”
“Oh, uh. It’s...” He can’t tell if it’s the music, or the evening sky, or Marinette that’s making it hard to snap back to himself. Maybe it’s all three. “It’s... that sound-color thing I told you about—”
“No, I—I figured.” Marinette fumbles as she turns down the volume. He hardly thought her the type, but she does it like it’s something she’s done for ages. Like she’s tapping into someone she used to be. “You... think about my eyes?”
Luka can feel his face burning, his stomach lurching. He’s overthinking, he knows it, but somehow it doesn’t feel wrong for him to say, “I’ve been trying to get them right for a long time.”
She gives him a confused look at first, but understanding cracks across her face once he unzips his gig bag, sets up the amp, and sets his guitar in his lap.
“Can you play it again?” he asks. It’s quiet, and unsure, but there’s a tinge of hope to it. “I want to get it right.”
Marinette’s eyes go wide, and her cheeks turn pink under the delicate string lights. It seems like she holds onto her breath for longer than she means to, but she nods, and she does that fumbling thing again as she reaches for her phone. Once those first piano notes trickle out, she looks to him expectantly. That’s all it takes for his fingers to find the strings. For his heart to find that ocean blue. He doesn’t quite copy the melody note for note; instead, he finds the little pockets where his music fits, and he makes it sound a little fuller. A little more like her.
Maybe it’s not perfect. But it’s good enough.
Somewhere along the way, Luka closed his eyes, and when he opens them again, he finds Marinette sitting closer—just across from him, in fact. She’s huddled up with her chin on her knees, all but marveling at him in silence. When she finally speaks, it’s after she’s paused the next song, and it’s only to breathe, “Wow.”
Luka’s not feeling particularly flirtatious; actually, the most he does is laugh sheepishly and rub the back of his neck. “I’m not so good with words,” he says. “But music gets me pretty close to what I want to say. So… maybe I was wrong about not having an angle. Maybe my thing is playing people.”
Marinette snaps out of it long enough to laugh, all breath, and say, “Where I’ve been, that sounds an awful lot like you’re a con man.”
“I’m not a con man, I mean... what people sound like. Their hearts, or... the parts of them that are most beautiful. That sound like that”— he gestures toward the speaker, and then up to the sky—”or remind us that... whatever we’re made of, it came from up there. Somewhere. That’s what I wanna think about, when I play…”
He catches himself and goes silent, but Marinette’s already giving him a meaningful look, teeth sinking into her lip. Somewhere along the line, her face went right to scarlet.
“Me,” she says. “That’s what you were playing in the park. Me.”
Luka doesn’t know how much of him has been discovered, but he keeps quiet all the same. He won’t give any more of himself away. It’s only as he’s about to apologize—for what, he’s not entirely sure—that Marinette cuts him off.
“Look, I… I need to tell you about something.”
He grips his guitar more tightly, because his phone is too far out of reach, and all the alarm bells go off.

After booking almost 900 days in advance, and driving close to 400 miles over two days, my mother and I arrived in Wigtown (Scotland's national book town) to take up residence in the world's first Airbnb bookshop, The Open Book.
(Those of you that follow The Open Book blog will already know the score here, so I won't go over the details. But if you’re unfamiliar with the concept, the Guardian do a rather lovely summary: https://bit.ly/2EH9fln).
Driving up the A1, I had butterflies. I knew our mere eight-hour drive was not the furthest people had travelled to stay in this quaint little shop. Residents before us have come as far afield as Canada, France, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, Taiwan and America. In preparation I had started reading 'The Diary of a Bookseller' by Shaun Bythell. It was my Auntie’s copy. She had loaned it to me under strict instructions I must visit the shop (opportunely named The Book Shop) and ask its author if he would be so kind as to sign it. Noted.
SUNDAY
We arrived around 3pm, when the sun was just beginning its demise into the firs and mountains. It seemed the days were even shorter in Scotland. After parking up and having a good stretch (it was needed) we walked up to the shop and was greeted by George. A lovely, towering man with a soft calming voice. The first words he said to us were, goodness you’re very prompt! Wigtown may have a reputation for being a buzzing hub of bookish activity in the summer and during the September Book Festival, but during the winter months, not so much. I smiled, we had arrived in this sleepy town on the remote coast of Galloway.
George spent some time showing us around the shop and the upstairs flat. He explained The Open Book does not take card, but there is a card machine down by the post office, so really there is no excuse. By the time we had gone through everything, and got our bags from the car, it was coming up to 4:30 and the sun had well and truly set. Too tired after our long drive to open shop, we went for an early dinner in Cobwebs (a charming little eatery just down the road) and ordered two streaming bowls of sweet potato and chilli soup. It was delicious.
Back at the flat we turned on all the heaters and got cosy. I spent the evening making plans for the week ahead and reading more of The Diary of a Bookseller in the rocking chair.
MONDAY

We opened up shop at 10am. I spent the first part of the morning designing and writing a slogan for the shop’s sandwich board. Not as easy as it sounds, all the chalk I could find was broken into small pieces and difficult to grasp. Of course, the moment I finished and proudly set up the board outside, I found a box of brand-new chalk behind the counter. After cursing myself loud enough for my mother to hear, we began making up the window displays. We must have succeeded a group of zoologists because all the displays were animal themed, with no concessions as to domestic or exotic. I took down the Dick Francis display on horses and the comprehensive display on birds and their history, and began creating my ‘New Year’s Resolutions for Fictional Characters’ display. Mum dressed the other two windows. On the left a ‘Spooky Christmas’ themed display, in which she was able to take advantage of the shop’s ample sci-fi, fantasy, crime and thriller sections. On the far right, a ‘Mystery Books’ display, developed out of the festively wrapped books we found in a box on the floor, presumably another thing that must have come from the residents before us.
Shortly into the morning we were greeted by Ruth, a lovely Scottish woman who is the proud owner of the new bookshop next door. She invited us both over before she closed at 3. I came away with a copy of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest', and Mum came away with two Roddy Doyle books (including 'The Snapper'), a Leanne Moriarty title, and 'The Atheists Guide to Christmas', which she bought for my dad as a gag stocking filler.
While I was in the shop, Ruth, who was looking out the window, exclaimed ‘Is that a police man? I don’t think I’ve seen a police man round here in near three months since I been here’. Turns out a huge hay lorry had collided with a utility pole down the street from the shop. The road was closed and the incident was the talk of the town for the rest of the day.
We closed up around 4 and went browsing around the town. Half way down the street we were stopped by Nanette who asked if we were running the shop this week. Her face lit up when we said we were and she produced a small parcel of Scottish shortbread biscuits for us. They were delicious.
That evening mum and I shared a bottle of wine and I made vegetarian Thai green curry with noodles for dinner. We spent the evening and a lot of the night telling stories. Mum reiterated some from her youth in London. Some I knew, others I didn’t, but they were mostly tales of her visiting the Irish dance halls with ‘the usual crowd’, being silly and generally wild. She is a great storyteller, and frequently had me crying with laughter.
TUESDAY

We opened slightly later today as the weather was terrible. Wind had been rattling against the windows of the flat all night, so we chose to stay in the warmth for a little longer. Mum made porridge for breakfast and it filled me with warmth and nostalgia.
The shop was predictably quite, but we didn’t mind. We chose to spend some time rearranging the fairy lights in an attempt to make the place look a little more festive. We made plans to take a long lunch and visit the café bookshop down the road and then pop in and introduce ourselves to Shaun at The Book Shop. I thought about my Auntie and I was sorry she wasn’t here with us.
Around 12, a man came into the shop. I watched him for the tips Ruth had warned us about, ‘you know they won’t buy anything if they walk around like this: with their hands behind their back, casually glancing at the shelves, not touching anything’. I watched. He didn’t touch anything, and he left after about 10 minutes. I think he might have been killing time for the bus.
Another man came into the shop shortly after, and though he didn’t buy anything he was very chatty. He asked if we had the biography of Maya Angelou, which I thought was perhaps a bit too much to ask from the shop’s mild shelves, all of which consist of second hand titles. I was right. He then asked about writing workshops in the area, which I regretfully told him I didn’t know much about. After he left, I googled it. I couldn’t find much other than information on the September festival.
Around 2pm we shut up and walked down to the Reading Lasses Bookshop Café. Mum and I had tea and scones. I bought a book for my uncle titled ‘Cooking for your Cat’. And came away with copies of Alice Walker’s 'In Love & Trouble' and Suniti Namjoshi’s 'The Conversations of Cow' for myself.
We then crossed the road to The Book Shop – we were blown away. Shaun’s shop is a wonderland of towering shelves, with over a mile of shelving supporting near 100,000 books (by Shaun’s estimation). Every nook and crannie seems to be spilling over with boxes and baskets of literature, covering every genre you could possibly think of. I did a full circuit of the place, before ending back where I started. I was overwhelmed. I couldn’t see the wood for the trees, never mind the books, or the words for the ink. It was easy to let yourself feel small and insignificant next to the centuries, and I mean centuries worth of literature before you. My anxieties were not quelled when mum lent over to me and whispered 'I can’t help thinking if there was a fire, this place would burn like anything'. Eventually I turned to the tall, ruggedly bookish man hovering behind the counter. I asked him where I might find his Howard Spring titles, to which, amazingly, he said ‘I don’t think we have any Howard Spring (I had to stop myself from saying ‘really?’) but if we do, they’ll be here’. And he pointed towards the fiction shelves under ‘S’. I had a good look through S, and R and T. I even floated around the surrounding sections, one of which was dedicated to ‘Irish’ literature, which I pointed out to mum. I gave up after a while and picked myself out a book titled 'The Mermaids in the Basement' by Marina Warner. I walked up to the counter and asked the same man if he was Shaun. Which he confirmed, somewhat reproachfully. He seemed to warm to us after I explained we were staying in The Open Book and asked him to sign my copy of his book.
That evening, it was mum’s turn to cook. She made a delicious hearty omelette with chips, which we both devoured, along with another glass of wine or two.
WEDNESDAY

The morning was damp but clear. I got up early and made mum a cup of tea before opening up the shop around 9. When she came down, she spent the first half an hour or so rummaging through the boxes in the kitchenette area. She discovered a box of Christmas decorations, including a rather lovely wooden nativity set, which on first glance seemed to be missing the baby Jesus and include 2 shepherds and 4 wise men.
Me: Four wise men? That’s not right. Mum: Eh, it’s Scotland. Probably a Presbyterian nativity.
Mum spent the afternoon writing postcards to everyone in Ireland. She signed off by saying ‘It’s just like Mountbellew’. We predicted what my auntie’s response would be: 'And you travelled all that way to see it?'
After closing up, we took a walk down to the Martyrs Stake and got caught in the rain. Actually, we got soaked. But we didn’t mind, other than the fact it stopped us going into some bookshops on the way back for fear we’d bring the damp into the shops with us.
Pizza for dinner. Neither of us felt like cooking.
THURSDAY
Browsers: 14 Sales: 8
Mum opened up today and I slept in. Apparently there was a customer waiting outside when she came down. He bought two books. Our busiest morning of the entire week. I spent my morning writing letters to friends and tucking them inside books. I will hand them out as Christmas presents when I get home.
A man came in around 11:30 with his daughter and admired our nativity display, I caught myself smiling. Not least because mum had spent a good 10 minutes fashioning a manger for a make-shift baby Jesus.
Around lunch time, I went to the post office and paid a visit to The Book Shop. I was a bit more prepared this time - I went with a list. I didn’t manage to find anything on the list, but it did give me a bit more direction. I ended up coming away with an Anne Enright title (one of my favourite novelists) and another Roddy Doyle novel, as well as some poetry pamphlets. I got back to the shop a little over an hour later. Whilst I was away, a man came in ‘with his carrier bags’ as my mother described him. Apparently, he stayed all of 10 minutes and most of that was spent helping himself to as many sweets as possible from our bowl on the counter before announcing, ‘I think my bus is here’ and leaving.
We had a few more customers come in throughout the afternoon. It was by far our busiest day in the shop. Before closing we tallied our total for the week. Drum role please:
In four days we accumulated a grand total of just £30.
We had been somewhat prepared for this. George, who welcomed us, as well as numerous other booksellers in the area all informed us this would be a quite week. Christmas countdown coupled with the cold and the wet just meant not many people would be out buying books. But I couldn’t help but reflect on the impact this must have for independent bookshops across the U.K. When we visited Shaun at his shop, he ruefully told us, you can usually survive a bad winter if you’ve had a good summer. He expands on this sentiment countless times in his book.
It is no secret the British high street is in trouble. This year, retailers are preparing for the slowest Christmas sales in a decade. But in spite of this, booksellers in the UK and the US have anecdotally reported an upturn in sales and footfall this year (https://bit.ly/2UYE4qN). I guess those feet aren’t quite prepared to trudge through Scottish weather just yet.

After I finished my postcard, I took a step back and I was really proud of my work.  I included a lot of information, and everything on the postcard was directly related to Firmin Didot in some way.  Even the stamp represented his birth place.  I had established hierarchy by placing the important information I wanted the audience to see in the middle of the postcard.  I was really proud of the sketch I made of Didot.  I had spent a lot of time perfecting it, and when I was finished I loved the way it looked, even it being slightly cartoon-like with his enlarged eyes and almost goofy mouth.  I scanned it on to my computer after watching a youtube video, and was able to successfully add the photo.
Something that worked well for me when designing and thinking of hierarchy was dividing the page into sections.  For this, I divided it into 3 sections on each side.  On the back of the post card, I wanted the portrait to draw the most attention so I placed it in the middle.
Photoshop helped me execute my ideas.  I used the text tool and added the curvature to it with one of the properties.  This allowed the text to curve around my portrait, drawing the eye to it (also creating hierarchy).  I also used the blur tool for the first time to smooth out and ease my portrait into the postcard.
I feel like I grew as a designer.  I found how to do things on my own, and executed them to create the postcard.  I used new tools and explored new parts of photoshop in this process.  I started out really upset because I felt I was terrible at photoshop, and now I fee better about it knowing that I figured a lot out on my own.  This to me is growth as a designer.
I learned how to scan an image on to my computer to use for photoshop.  This allows me to draw more and create more without using a computer, which is one of my strengths.  Conceptually, I discovered that some things take time to learn.  I learned that it is okay I am not the best with photoshop... I haven’t even been using it for a full 2 months yet and it is okay that I am still learning it.

IRS proposes Form 1040 changes for 2019 tax filings
Tumblr media
If the changes to Form 1040 this filing season frustrated you, there's some good news and some bad news.
The good news is that the Internal Revenue Service is revising the Form 1040 to be used for 2019 tax filings.
No, it's still not quite a postcard. But there will be fewer schedules to file — three instead of six — if your taxes are a bit more complicated.
The bad news is that many of us still have to fill out those schedules (and the accompanying forms for additional tax break claims that remained) instead of having things on the old Form 1040 or long 1040 like we used for ages.
Can you tell I'm a bit of a tax form traditionalist? I won't apologize. And I'm not alone.
Tax pro 1040 change reactions: Last week, the Internal Revenue Service quietly slipped a Form 1040 revision for the 2019 tax year into its draft tax forms page.
The Form 1040 proposed changes and ensuing online conversations earn 1040 this week's By the Numbers honor.
Kicking off the tax talk was sharp-eyed @Twitter pal Glen Birnbaum, who noticed the draft forms and let all us tax geeks on social media know. Thanks, Glen!
#TaxTwitter - what do you think of the draft 2019 Form 1040 released this week? Capital gain line added, schedules reduced from 6 to 3, signature line moved, etc. pic.twitter.com/KGIa888zir
— Glen Birnbaum (@GlenBirnbaum) July 13, 2019
Jeanne W./@JLWCPA2 noted the IRS' stealth approach, speculating that perhaps the agency thought "maybe if we change it back slowly, they won't notice."
No such luck IRS. We noticed. And the online comments started flying fast and furious.
Overall, the anecdotal reaction from the TaxTwitterverse was "good move, IRS." Below is a sampling of remarks in the tax pros own words.
Melinda Nelson/@MelindaNCPA — Let's just admit a mistake was made and go back to 2017 format, but guess that’s not happening so, grateful for these changes.
@EricChaimowitz — Improvement over 2018, but a ways to go. Maybe I miss the 2017 1040 format.
And Nick Chertok/@golfprogress reacted musically, proposing a tax rewrite of the Dire Straits MTV plea, saying, "Still sucks but at least someone recognizes it needs to improve and they moved slightly in the right direction. I feel like belting out Dire Straits' 'I want my MTV' [coda lyric of 'Money for Nothing'], but 'Bring back my 1040' doesn't have the same ring."
youtube
Signature shift: OK, I hear ya. Enough with the tax pro yammering. What are the proposed changes?
The new Form 1040 that millions of us filed (or will by Oct. 15) this year was shorter than the three 1040s we filed before the enactment in late 2017 of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA).
The 2019 revision is still not quite the tax reform-promised size of a postcard. It does remain around half a letter-sized page, with lines to be completed on the front and back.
The most notable change for 2019 taxes is that the signature block that was on page 1 this filing season would be on the 2019 revised form's page 2.
Thank you! With the signature up front, the 2018 Form 1040 gave me the uncomfortable sensation that I was signing a blank check.
I know, I know. You fill out the form and applicable schedules and then sign, but still it just looked funny.
Now your signature will be, as it was for decades, under the section showing what tax you owe or refund you're due. Some 1040 order has been restored! See tax traditionalist admission earlier.
Income info will be up front: With that shift of the signature block to the 1040's back/page 2, the section for reporting income is transferred to page 1 of the 2019 form.
This is wages and salaries reported on W-2s, along with investment income, retirement plan (private and from Uncle Sam) payouts and the wonderful catchall of other income, which now covers self-employment earnings (now detailed on Schedule 1; more on this in a minute) that used to have their own line on pre-TCJA forms.
Speaking of self-employment income, the still confusing qualified business income deduction, aka section 199A, is on page 1.
So is a line to enter adjustments to income, otherwise known as above the line deductions, which now also are on the separate Schedule 1.
When all the computations are done, including your standard or itemized deductions amount, page 1 of the 2019 Form 1040 will end on line 11b with your taxable income.
Tax calculations on the back: Now that you know how much you made will face taxes, you'll figure the U.S. Treasury's cut on the back, aka page 2, of the proposed 2019 Form 1040.
To help you reduce that amount, you'll find lines for some popular tax credits:
Child tax or other dependents on line 13a,
Earned Income Tax Credit (or as noted on the form as Earned Income Credit/EIC) on 18a,
Additional child tax credit on 18b and
American Opportunity educational tax credit on 18c.
Page 2 also is where you'll enter applicable info from Schedules 2 and 3. I promise, more on all the revised schedules is coming up in just a minute.
Owing or refund: Your tax liability amount entered on page 2 will be what you've already paid via payroll withholding throughout the tax year along with estimated taxes.
If you overpaid, you'll get a refund. If you underpaid your taxes, you'll owe.
One small style note regarding due taxes caught my eye. On the 2019 Form 1040, the section showing how much tax you still have to pay with your new Form 1040 now is much more obvious.
Specifically, as you can see from the two year's forms sections below, the print proposed for the 2019 version (the second one) is noticeably larger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Form 1040 (2019) Draft
I'm not sure if that's a reaction to the many filers who ended up this year owing more tax than they had in prior years because, in many cases, they didn't adjust their paycheck withholding to account for the TCJA changes.
Then, as noted, you (and your tax preparer if you use one) sign the Form 1040.
Schedules 1, 2 and 3: Let's get real. Congress always knew there's no way to get to a postcard-sized tax return without blowing up the current Internal Revenue Code and starting over.
There's no way the House and Senate will do that, but they still liked the political rhetoric and show-and-tell visual of a postcard tax return so they kept using that phrase.
Boxed in, the IRS did the best it could in revising Form 1040 for 2018 filings, the first under the TCJA. But in trimming the long 1040 and consolidating the previous three forms into one, it had to create new paperwork.
For 2018 taxes, there were six schedules. The IRS is proposing when we file our 2019 tax returns next year, we use only three schedules to fill out the revised Form 1040.
Basically, the agency is eliminating this year's Schedules 4, 5 and 6.
Here's what the IRS wants to put on the remaining three schedules:
2019 taxes, the number of schedules has been halved. Here's what will go where next filing season:
If you …
Then use …
Have additional income, such as capital gains, unemployment compensation, prize or award money, gambling winnings. Have any deductions to claim, such as student loan interest deduction, self-employment tax, educator expenses. Have any deductions to claim, such as student loan interest deduction, self-employment tax, educator expenses.
Schedule 1, Additional Income and Adjustments to Income This is essentially the same as for the 2018 tax year.
Owe Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) or need to make an excess advance premium tax credit repayment.an   Owe other taxes, such as self-employment tax, household employment taxes, additional tax on IRAs or other qualified retirement plans and tax-favored accounts.
Schedule 2, Additional Taxes This originally covered AMT issues only. Now it adds the items that for 2018 filings were on the deleted Schedule 4.
Can claim a nonrefundable credit other than the child tax credit or the credit for other dependents, such as the foreign tax credit, education credits, general business credit. Can claim a refundable credit other than the earned income credit, American Opportunity Credit, or additional child tax credit. Have other payments, such as an amount paid with a request for an extension to file or excess social security tax withheld.
Schedule 3, Additional Credits and Payments This schedule for 2018 covered only nonrefundable credits. Now the refundable ones that went on 2018's Schedule 5 are rolled into this one form.
Schedule 6, which for 2018 filings was used to report a Foreign Address and Third Party Designee, would be gone.
Instead, the address section of the Form 1040 is expanded to allow entry of foreign address information. Also, a section is added to the 2019 revised tax return where you can enter third-party designee (other than your paid tax preparer).
IRS accepting public comments: OK, the proposed 2019 Form 1040, like the 2018 version, definitely is not a postcard. More like a greeting card. Or a sympathy one, maybe.
But adding some more to the Form 1040 will reduce some paperwork, as will, obviously, consolidating the current six schedules into three.
Remember, taxes are a process. So is the IRS' reworking of them. And the agency is willing to hear what you think about these proposed changes.
If you have more suggestions on how to make the 2019 Form 1040 better, the IRS wants to hear from you.
Email your comments about this draft form to [email protected] by Aug. 15.
