(2021) World map made with fabrics sent to me by Postcrossers (users of the Postcrossing postcard exchange). It measures 50" x 87" or 4ft2in x 7ft3in (1.27m x 2.2m)
I began this project on 08 September 2017, when I added a note to my Postcrossing profile, that I would like fabric from other Postcrossers so I could make my world map quilt. All the country fabrics are from Postcrossers. The water/background and border are purchased by me. It took years to complete this project because I only added new countries when I had several fabrics saved up. I finished it on 10 April 2021, so it took almost exactly 3 years and 7 months. The countries are appliqued on and satin stitched. Obviously, some degree of detail had to be sacrificed, and very small nations were left out entirely, as were many islands. Most of the fabrics came from Postcrossers in the US and Europe. Because of this, I made no attempt to match fabric = country. For example, I got only a couple of fabrics from anywhere in Africa, but many fabrics from Russia, Germany the US, etc. The other factor was size - big countries demand big fabrics. It took a while for me to add Russia to the map because I needed a large enough piece to arrive. I limited myself to one fabric from any given Postcrosser. Some people sent several swatches of fabric! Most of them were received with postcards as part of a regular Postcrossing exchange, but some of them were sent by Postcrossers who heard about the project and wanted to send something. :) I am in fact working on the next Postcrossing quilting project, and again, it's taking time because I have to wait for other Postcrossers to send me fabric. But it will get there!
This project was featured on the Postcrossing blog in April 2021.
