Just so nobody can say this is out of context, here's a vid of the entire interview.
The Obama administration successfully contained the Ebola outbreak in the United States. The death toll for Ebola in the US was under a dozen. So before leaving office, the Obama National Security Council created a 69-page handbook on how to deal with a pandemic. Trump and his flunkies ignored it with disastrous results.
Trump team failed to follow NSC’s pandemic playbook
The US death toll from COVID-19 is in seven digits. Other industrialized countries with advanced technological infrastructure such as Canada, Taiwan, Germany, and New Zealand had lower fatality rates per capita.
Trump largely ignored the virus until well into March when it had a chance to spread across the US.
The missing six weeks: how Trump failed the biggest test of his life The president was aware of the danger from the coronavirus – but a lack of leadership has created an emergency of epic proportions
The Trump administration, at best, was in denial; at worst, it sabotaged the pandemic response.
youtube
Trump White House made 'deliberate efforts' to undermine Covid response, report says
Trump zombies who claim the economy was marvelous under Trump conveniently forget about everything that happened after February of 2020. Trump's early bungling of the pandemic plunged the economy into recession. The COVID supply chain problems and the economic stimulus required to prevent a depression led to the spurt in inflation which is finally receding.
People who are nostalgic about taking hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin, drinking bleach, and sticking UV lights up their butts must be excited about the opportunity to vote for Trump again.

Tucker Carlson went to Moscow last week and had an absolute blast. He rode the subway and marveled at its clean cars, the fancy tilework in Kievskaya Station, and the lack of booze-drenched hobos. He went to a grocery store and was astonished by what ordinary people could apparently buy. He even managed to meet a local history buff and sit down for tea and conversation. Carlson, who had never previously visited Moscow, declared himself “radicalized” against America’s leaders by the experience. He didn’t want to live in Moscow, but he did want to know why we in America have to put up with street crime and crappy food when the supposedly bankrupt Russia provided such a nice life for its people, or at least those people not named Alexei Navalny.
My former Atlantic colleague Ralph Waldo Emerson called travel a “fool’s paradise,” but not all forms of foolishness are equal. Many commentators have guffawed at Carlson’s Russophilia and pointed out that Russia’s murder rate is roughly that of the United States, and that its citizens are dirt poor, about a fifth as wealthy per capita as the citizens of the United States overall. “I don’t care what some flagship supermarket in an imperial city looks like,” The Dispatch’s Jonah Goldberg tweeted. “Russia is far, far poorer than our poorest state, Mississippi.” Bloomberg’s Joe Weisenthal suggested that Carlson instead visit the grocery stores of the “10th or 50th” richest Russian cities, and see how they compare with America’s.
In 2019, I visited several large and small Russian cities, and I went grocery shopping at least once in each. Would you believe that Tucker Carlson is on to something? In Moscow (the largest) and St. Petersburg (No. 2), the flagship supermarkets are indeed spectacular. The Azbuka Vkusa branch next to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow is more luxurious than any grocery store within 100 miles of Washington, D.C. Other branches in Moscow vary in quality, and they are usually smaller than American supermarkets. But to some extent that’s just a matter of culture: The U.S. has fewer supermarkets, but each one is big enough to feed the 82nd Airborne Division for a month; in Europe, supermarkets are more numerous but tiny.
Makhachkala (22), the capital of Dagestan, followed a similar pattern to Moscow. One supermarket downtown was amazing, the equal of an upscale supermarket in Washington or Dallas. On the outskirts the quality varied, but not drastically. Local residents were not eating soups made from grass clippings. In Murmansk (71), the cramped bodega near my rented flat had a good wine selection and enough fresh staple foods to prepare a different meal your mom would approve of every day of the week. Only in Derbent (134) did I start to wonder whether the bad old days of the Soviet Union were still in effect. But even that would be an exaggeration. In Derbent, for $15, you could get champagne and caviar with blini and velvety sour cream. If you want to flash back to Cold War communism, go to Havana. There the grocery stores stock only dust and mildew.
With apologies to Emerson, travel can disabuse you of foolish notions just as often as it plants them in your head. An idea ripe for dispelling among Americans at this particular moment is that life in Russia must suck because the frigid depression of the Cold War never ended. In those days ordinary citizens were spied upon and tortured and killed, and the shops were empty, save for substandard goods at prices few could afford. Now Russia is different. The state repression is much more limited, though no less brutal toward those who attract its attention. Until the Ukraine war added a huge category of forbidden topics, the main ones that you could get locked up for discussing were war in the Caucasus and the personal life and finances of President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle. Most other topics were broachable, and you could whine all you liked about them.
Equally in need of updating are American expectations about Russian economic misery. Those whose visits to Russia stopped 20 years ago tend to have outdated views of the best the country has to offer. My visits started 24 years ago. Back then, I spent days at a time on the Trans-Siberian, crammed into railway cabins with little to do but talk with Russians and see how they lived. Life was not beautiful. The men busied themselves with crosswords and sullenly browsed pornography. When not in motion, I stayed with Russian friends in single-room flats that looked straight out of a New York tenement building 100 years ago. No one I met was starving, but women sometimes approached me in train stations hoping to rent out their homes or bodies, or to sell me family heirlooms. That type of desperation seems to have subsided, although I would be shocked if any of those people are able to buy the jamón ibérico at the Smolenskaya branch of Azbuka Vkusa yet. On the roads between the big cities, there are still villages so ramshackle that they look like sets from The Little Rascals. Evidence suggests that the Russian military’s frontline troops tend to come from these depressed and benighted lands, the places that really are stuck in the 20th century.
Certain aspects of life remain dismal even in the cities. My flat in Murmansk had surly drunks tottering outside its entrance, and its stairwell smelled like every cat, dog, and human resident had marked its territory there regularly since the Brezhnev era. But the playgrounds were decent, and you could get a delicious smoked-reindeer pizza at a cozy restaurant for $7. Remember, this is in a small, depressed Russian city—not somewhere stocked with goodies just in case an American wanders out of the lobby of the Radisson and needs to be impressed. The “useful idiots” of yesteryear were treated to fake Moscows, which evanesced as soon as the next Aeroflot flights took off. The luxuries of Moscow that Carlson sees, and that I saw, are not evanescent, and they are not (as they are in North Korea, say) a curated experience available only to those on controlled visits.
The stubborn belief that all good things in Russia must be illusory can in turn warp one’s analysis of the country, and in particular of Putin’s durability in power. After all, why would anyone remain loyal to an autocrat who delivered only hunger, penury, and the reek of cat piss? Putin rules by fear but not only by fear. Most Russians will tell you that Russia today is better than it was before Putin. They compare it not with the Soviet era but with the anarchy and decline of the 1990s. Life expectancy has risen, public parks are better maintained, and certain fruits of capitalism can be tasted by Russians of all classes. Who would risk these gains? Like every autocrat, Putin has ensured that his downfall just might destroy every good thing Russia has experienced in the past two decades. This risk is, from the perspective of regime continuity, a positive feature, because it keeps all but the most principled and brave opposition quiet, and content to shut up and enjoy their cheap caviar. Those like Navalny who object do not object for long.
Carlson’s videos never quite say what precisely he thinks Russia gets right. Moscow is in many ways superior to New York. But Paris has a good subway system too. Japan and Thailand have fine grocery stores, and I wonder, when I enter them, why entering my neighborhood Stop & Shop in America is such a depressing experience by comparison. Carlson’s stated preference for Putin’s leadership over Joe Biden’s suggests that the affection is not for fine food or working public transit but for firm autocratic rule—which, as French, Thais, and Japanese will attest, is not a precondition for high-quality goods and services. And in an authoritarian state, those goods and services can serve to prolong the regime.
I confess I still enjoy watching Carlson post videos of Moscow, wide-eyed and credulous as he slowly learns to love a country that I love too. I hope he posts more of them. One goes through stages of love for Russia, often starting with the literature and music, then moving to its dark humor and the personalities of its people, which are always cycling between thaw and frost. Inevitably one reflects on the irony that this civilization, whose achievement is almost without equal in some respects, is utterly cursed in others—consigned to literally centuries of misgovernment, incompetence, and tyranny. The final stage is realizing that the greatness of Russia is part of the curse, a heightening of the irony, as if no matter how much goes right, something is deeply wrong. Maybe when things go right, the more deeply wrong it is. Carlson seems to still be in one of the early stages of this journey.

And Ye Shall Marvel
Show me an effective digital campaign, and I will show you one that has high levels of user engagement. It’s one thing to pull all the levers and be everywhere, but it is quite another when you invite people into the campaign to reach for a little more.
And that is exactly what Coca-Cola is doing with their new Marvel joint promotion. It brings two powerhouse brands together to coincide with the late-July release of yet another Marvel movie. The promo includes special cans and bottles bearing Marvel super hero images, along with scannable QR codes. Once scanned, users are whisked away to AR content to supplement and support the messaging provided on the packaging.
There’s somewhat conflicting information online about exactly how many characters will appear, and where they will appear. It looks like Coca-Cola Classic and Coke Zero will share center stage, although I did read one story implying there could be more. Also, the number of characters ranges from “more than 30” to as high as 38.
That’s a lot of opportunities for engagement!
Tumblr media
It’s also a page from an old playbook in the beverage industry, minus the QR and AR aspects. Starting back in the 80s, beverage makers started releasing sets of cans to coincide with a cross-promotion of another brand, or to promote something for which the beverage company had an exclusive affiliation, like the Olympics. As a long-time collector of beverage industry memorabilia, I can attest to how intense things can get trying to find every one of the items in a set. Because an incomplete set is just that: Incomplete. No bueno.
The current promotion will be in more than 50 countries, and already eBay is filled with cans from across the globe. Collectors alone will probably ensure the success of the campaign, but once you factor in the casual consumer just scanning the can they happened to get at the local c-store, this has the potential to be massive in impact. Maybe.
The movie doesn’t come out for another 3 1/2 months, and already supermarket shelves are filled with the initial shipments of Classic and Zero. The cardboard 12-pack packaging reinforces the campaign, and stands out nicely on shelves. Visual appeal is high.
The campaign comes at an important time for Coca-Cola, as well as all soft drink manufacturers, because consumption is down. Per capita consumption peaked around 2000, with about 50 gallons apiece. It has dropped steadily ever since, and now sits at just under 43 gallons per person. Stir in the Ozempic craze, and it is possible that food and beverage makers selling less-than-healthy products may continue to see sales declines.
But that decline started long before silver bullet products like Ozempic were ever available, meaning that changes in consumer behavior have been ongoing. I honestly could not tell you the last time I actually sipped a soft drink, although I still buy—and drain—cans I need for my collection. Can the current promotion reverse this downward spiral? That’s a tough call, because the trend line is clear. Coca-Cola needs it. Oh, and Disney, who owns Marvel, could also use a big boost at the box office. Misery loves company perhaps?
There’s another interesting aspect at play here as well. Quick! Show me a product that used a QR code before COVID. I’ll wait. I might be waiting a while, though, because I bet you can’t think of one. But show me a product available today whose packaging doesn’t contain a QR code, and I bet you would be equally hard-pressed. They became ubiquitous during the pandemic, and marketers and consumers alike finally realized their value.
I use the word “finally” because QR codes have actually been in existence since 1994, although they did not get a bump until about 2010. It’s just that there were still too few people with smartphones then to be able to scan them, and they landed with a thud. Worse yet, you had to download a QR-reader app. At least phone manufacturers finally figured out they could build that into their native camera app, and they could be used in myriad applications.
I saw them in China in 2019 as a payment gateway in restaurants. How many of you have paid your tab with a QR code here in the States? It is starting to gain traction, and I love it, if only because I do not have to surrender my card to a total stranger, who disappears with it for five to ten minutes.
As for marketing engagement, they are the best we’ve got these days. Not too many years ago the best we could do was invite people to visit a website. That took too many steps, though. A scannable code makes it easy, and I suspect that both parties to this promo are going to be exclaiming “Marvelous” before it is all over. One can hope.

I write fanfiction because no one ships the ships I ship. 😂
Please, remember to behave yourself and unload your pent up anger somewhere else and with somebody else, better if it's a therapist. Remember: don't like don't interact. It's as easy as that. Thank you and I wish you well (I mean it). ❤
When I’m not writing I’m either plotting or beta reading for someone else (Ita/Eng).
In my stories, Originals or Fan Fictions, most of the time I deal with delicate issues and/or ship that no one, other than myself, ships; my ships can be considered problematic for many, so, I’m letting you know in advance.
I’ll admit that I write sporadic fluff too, just to practice on more things, but it’s the thought that counts, right? Jokes aside, fluff can be just as important as any other content! 🙌🏻
I must say that I also tend to write stories without ships or romantic relationships.

ITA

EXPLORE HONGKONG
Tumblr media
Dream destination: HONGKONG
Hong Kong has always been a favorite destination of tourists, especially of Filipino travelers, as it offers something for everyone--from attractions to food to shopping destinations.
“Hong Kong has always been close to the hearts of Filipino travelers and it is one of Philippines' top travel destinations of choice,” Hong Kong Tourism Board regional director of Southeast Asia Raymond Chan said during the "Marvels in Hong Kong" media event.
The pandemic put a pause on travel for the past two years, but with restrictions slowly easing up globally, tourists have a chance to visit Hong Kong again.
Chan noted that the "0+3 travel measures" is a “significant milestone for Hong Kong.”
“Currently, visitors to Hong Kong are no longer required to undergo hotel quarantine with three-day medical surveillance period,” he explained.
But despite the hitch in global travel, Hong Kong continued to develop its tourism facilities and destinations in the past years to ensure tourists will have something new to look forward to when they return.
history
Hong Kong is a special administrative region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China. It comprises 200 islands located in Eastern Asia bordering the South China Sea and China. Much of Hong Kong's terrain is hilly to mountainous with steep slopes. The government system is a limited democracy; the chief of state is the president of China, and the head of government is the chief executive of Hong Kong. Hong Kong has a free market economy in which the prices of goods and services are determined in a free price system. Hong Kong is a member of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
Hong Kong was established as a colony of the British Empire after the Qing Empire ceded Hong Kong Island in 1841–1842. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and was further extended when the United Kingdom obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. Hong Kong was briefly occupied by Japan from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. The whole territory was transferred from the United Kingdom to China in 1997. Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the principle of "one country, two systems".[f]
Originally a sparsely populated area of farming and fishing villages,[18][19] the territory is now one of the world's most significant financial centres and commercial ports. Hong Kong is the world's fourth-ranked global financial centre, ninth-largest exporter, and eighth-largest importer. Its currency, the Hong Kong dollar, is the eighth most traded currency in the world. Home to the second-highest number of billionaires of any city in the world, Hong Kong has the largest concentration of ultra high-net-worth individuals. Although the city has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, severe income inequality exists among the population. Despite having the largest number of skyscrapers of any city in the world, housing in Hong Kong has been well-documented to experience a chronic persistent shortage.
Hong Kong is a highly developed territory and has a Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.952, ranking fourth in the world. The city has the highest life expectancy in the world, and a public transport rate exceeding 90%.
Avenue of stars
Tumblr media
There was a time when Hong Kong’s filmic output was only bested by Hollywood and Bollywood, and while it’s a less prodigious beast these days, the city’s film industry still once produced illustrious names like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, the Shaw Brothers, John Woo, and Wong Kar-wai. Avenue of Stars pays tribute to these figures and many others who have helped burnish Hong Kong’s cinematic legacy. Selfie opportunities come with sculptures of Hong Kong legends such as martial arts master Bruce Lee, as well as singer and actress Anita Mui. Even Hong Kong's beloved local cartoon character McDull has a prime spot in front of the Victoria Harbour skyline. Plus, you can check out over 100 handprint plaques set into the wooden handrails along the waterfront.
Theme parks and attractions
It's impossible to talk about Hong Kong and not mention the "'happiest place on Earth."
Hong Kong Disneyland recently unveiled its new Castle of Magical Dreams and even started its new light show, “Momentous

Hong Kong Cuisine
Tumblr media
Traditional Hong Kong food hails from the Guangdong Province of China, with the most popular Cantonese dishes consisting of poultry, meat, or seafood alongside rice or noodles and some kind of preserved or pickled vegetables. You’ll find when eating in Hong Kong that there is a dominant sharing culture – most groups order a large meal to be shared together. Street food is also a very significant part of Cantonese food culture in Hong Kong. You’re sure to discover many street stalls selling delicious smelling, often deep fried, foods and snacks!
The culture of hongkong
Tumblr media
The culture of Hong Kong is primarily a mix of Chinese and Western influences, stemming from Lingnan Cantonese roots and later fusing with British culture due to British colonialism (Jyutping: Jyut6 zeoi6; Traditional Chinese: 粵英薈萃). As an international financial center dubbed "Asia's World City", contemporary Hong Kong has also absorbed many international influences from around the world. Moreover, Hong Kong also has indigenous people and ethnic minorities from South and Southeast Asia, whose cultures all play integral parts in modern day Hong Kong culture. As a result, after the 1997 transfer of sovereignty to the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong has continued to develop a unique identity under the rubric of One Country, Two Systems.
Hong Kong cultural festivals include Chinese New Year, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival, Christmas and the Western New Year. Expats can expect a great atmosphere at these events which usually involve impressive firework displays. As a city, Hong Kong also enjoys many other cultural events ranging from traditional Cantonese to other Chinese regional operas, theatre productions, ballet performances and music shows.
Hongkong festival
Tumblr media
Hong Kong festivals are often lavish affairs with street parades, packed temples, traditional music and dance performances. Chinese New Year is the most important celebration in Hong Kong and many Asian countries, but the city also has plenty of unique festivals you might not find elsewhere.
Buddhist and Taoist events are observed according to the lunar calendar, which means that the dates shift on a yearly basis. Some of Hong Kong’s biggest festivals usually take place in January or February (Chinese New Year), May, and October. It’s best to book your flights and accommodation far in advance as prices tend to soar during these months.

On creating unique heirloom artifacts
Mankind is entering a low-power stage. Even if this civilization recovers from the upcoming end of oil, I don't expect this current level of per-capita power - roughly 2.6 kilowatts continuously, at least in the EU - to be a normal state of living for the next 50000 years. We will have to abandon our high-powered activities, which will make low-powered devices much more attractive than today.
Phones and laptops are currently the most power-efficient computing devices we have. This low-power usage paradoxically relies on a very high-complexity production process: the manufacturing of high-density chips. This high density is the most important factor for power savings, vastly more important than any other architecture and power-saving structures.
Since we're moving towards simplification, this means that this decade's chips are more power efficient than almost anything that will come afterwards - at least when looking at comparable price points. This makes our current phones and laptops unique assets that can only grow in value. It's easy to underestimate how powerful these things are, because they're being used to work on utter mundanity. For comparison, the calculator app on my phone alone would have replaced hundreds of workers calculating ballistic trajectories in WW1. The charger chip in my phone cable has more computing power than the Apollo Moon lander.
These chips are technological marvels that we'll only ever produce in a limited time window. Before 1950 we didn't know how, and after 2050 we'll have lost most of the infrastructure to do keep these high-tech facilities running.
Currently these chips are easy and cheap to produce, so there are hundreds of billions of them on the planet. But because humanity only has a 100-year window to produce them, this is still a limited supply that needs to last tens of thousands of years. Worse, we're treating these chips as disposable, so 99% of these chips end up being destroyed after a 2-5 year use window. To me that's a tragedy because they have a near-infinite lifespan, when treated correctly. [yes I know about ionic electrochemical migration; it's an overrated concern] It also means that if you preserve your own chips, and know how to leverage them, you'll have a unique advantage over most other people.
The preservation of these chips is facing a couple of issues. Some of those are obvious (batteries, breaking touchscreens), some of those less so. There's a unique multiplier to adapting to these challenges now, before collapse progresses too much.
I'm writing this post to help you preserve your chips, which I consider one of the biggest marvels that mankind has ever created.
Issue #1: Batteries
Batteries are the most immediate aging bottleneck. No matter the chemistry, they all die within a couple of years. They're chemically fragile and don't store well, so I can't recommend stocking up. If there's no radical battery breakthrough in the next couple of years, we're going to lose battery operation for most phones and laptops completely. I'll assume that this will happen.
The easiest solution for failing batteries would be to hook up a phone / laptop to a less portable power source, like a bike generator, water wheel, or solar panel. Those are fairly low-tech and will probably be widely available long into civilizational collapse, but you'll need a rectifier and a DC-DC converter to run a phone / laptop with them. Both of those are going to become unavailable in the next decade or two.
For anything besides a water wheel, you'll have to deal with fluctuating power sources. My best idea for that are supercapacitors. They're bulky, they're relatively expensive, they don't hold their charge well, but they'll basically last forever. Especially for mobile operations powered by solar panels or hand cranks, a small array of supercapacitors would be essential. Specifically for this combo of solar panels and supercapacitors, you'll also need a buy a MPTT charge controller before they become unavailable.
In stationary usage, nickel-iron batteries or potential power storage could be good alternatives. These are fairly low-tech and not urgent to procure.
Issue #2: Touchscreens
They obviously break. Less obviously, they're surprisingly hard to produce, because they use Indium, one of the rarest elements on the planet, for their core function. There's no plausible way to repair a broken screen, and because the quantities on the screen are so low, recycling the Indium is also implausible. This means that touchscreens for your device will become unavailable in the next decade or two. It's possible that we'll get graphene touchscreens soon, which should be a bit simpler to produce than our current models, potentially extending the availability of replacement touchscreens beyond 2030. But good luck getting one for your specific phone.
The low-tech solution is to protect the screens. Use heavy-duty cases, laptop cases, maybe even a padded enclosure when you're facing rough travel.
But inherently, this fragility makes phones less viable than laptops. With a laptop, you can change or repair a keyboard, you can switch to fully remote operation with a network cable, or you could set it up to operate with esoteric input (audio cues, for example). A broken screen also opens up the phone for water damage.
Issue #3: Software
Obviously, after the end of Google or Apple, all of your purchased apps are not going to be available. Unless you've already downloaded them to your phone. AND NEVER DELETE THEM AGAIN. Don't run out of storage space (a topic continued in issue #4).
On the app side, there's a big split between the two camps:
Android makes it possible to install third-party apps, so you'll probably have a choice of aftermarket app stores for a decade or longer. You can also re-install apps if you happen to have the APK stored somewhere else.
On the Apple side, this looks much worse: you'd need a jailbroken phone to install new apps. And even most contemporary jailbreaks essentially expire after 8 days, requiring you to fetch permission from Apple each time. The last iPhone that was fully jailbreakable was the iPhone 5. If you, like me, prefer the iPhone, that's probably going to be your device for the majority of your remaining life. I own two. You also need to jailbreak them while Apple still exists, because they need to sign a cryptographic certificate in the process.
Bonus points: if you do end up perma-jailbreaking your iPhone 5, you'll also unlock the full compute platform, allowing you to develop your own apps on a separate computer. I recommend downloading Xcode and the Swift documentation if you want to go that route.
Because there's no more firmware updates, you'll also be vulnerable to exploits and hacker attacks. Once Apple and Google are gone, I'd recommend **going offline outside your home network** and avoid the risk of your phone becoming unusable.
Issue #4: MOSFETs
This is where it gets fiddly.
Every computer, no matter how big or how small, has a few DC-DC converters. MOSFETs are the reliable, powerful and cheap core component in these DC-DC converters. They'll also all fail within 20-50 years, mostly because they're usually undersized for their purpose (for multiple money reasons).
Almost all other electronic components have an effective lifespan in the tens of decades, potentially centuries, but MOSFETs tend to die much earlier. This wouldn't be bad in itself - we'll have plenty of spare parts from millions of other broken electronics - but the insidious fact is that, when MOSFETs die, they usually kill an important chip too. And those are not easily replaceable, and not repairable at all.
There is a good mitigation for this:
You add a transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode in parallel with your chip, which you can think of as a bulletproof vest. It'll take the hit when the MOSFET tries to kill the chip. And you add a small fuse before your MOSFET, so it doesn't kill anything upstream either.
These two components are tiny and cheap, but this needs to be done for every one of your devices, at multiple locations, possibly up to 30 times. You'll need a skilled repair person for this who knows how to modify existing circuits. Both the TVS diode and the fuse also need to have the right voltage and current values for each local circuit - just like picking the right size of bulletproof vest.
There's potential to be fooled here by some supposed expert who just puts in some random TVS diodes and fuses that they happen to have in stock. Potentially they don't even know that the right values are important. And you'll only notice that they made a mistake years or even decades later. I expect this to become a "on customer demand" service at electronic repair stores in the 2030s. Don't skimp on this and get someone reputable.
Issue #5: NAND degradation
This is where it gets ugly.
Every cell of storage in your phone / laptop has a limited life span. The more often you write to it, the shorter it will ultimately last. After the end of its life is reached, each cell gets marked as dead, and your overall capacity shrinks. This is not repairable.
Because all existing operating systems are designed to take storage as disposable, there are almost no options to avoid this issue. In phones, you can only mitigate:
- leave a decent amount of empty space to spread the depletion across multiple cells - pay someone to install a fresh storage chip (which you stocked up on, wisely) - generally avoid saving big data (videos, pictures etc)
On laptops, you have a few more obscure choices that all boild down to one thing: perform most of the operations in RAM (which has a practically indefinite lifespan) with a read-only operating system.
You can also mitigate with other physical media (harddrives, tape) but those will also break eventually, without adequate replacement. Reliable data storage during civilizational collapse is a whole separate can of worms.
NAND depletion is the factor that's probably going to kill 99% of even the collapse-adapted devices. If you want to mitigate for this, essentially creating a valuable heritage artifact, always get the highest capacity storage and stock up on the NAND chips that are compatible with your devices. You can buy the chips themselves new, but they're not super cheap ($10-$20). I'd suggest buying a broken phone instead, the same model as your own. Even old phones have basically virgin NAND chips. Avoid water-damaged phones and the ones that don't charge. Physical damage is the best.
