Born in 1972 in Tehran, Golnaz Fathi is a contemporary Iranian artist recognized for her reinterpretations of traditional Persian calligraphy. She studied graphic design at the Islamic Azad University and went on to study traditional Persian calligraphy, receiving a diploma from the Iranian Society of Calligraphy. She was named Best Woman Calligraphist by the Iranian Society of Calligraphy in 1995. She lives and works in Tehran.Fathi is widely recognized for expanding the tradition of calligraphy and pushing it to new heights. 

Her works are inspired by American Abstract Expressionists and Iranian and Middle Eastern modernists, who pioneered the use of the written word as a pictorial element in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Technically brilliant, she has developed a new visual language, which reconciles the ancient with the contemporary. Fathi's interest in calligraphy derives from the medium's intention to match the visual beauty of a text with its content. Instead of communicating with words, she pushes the gestural qualities of calligraphy beyond language, into abstraction. Her works repeat forms, creating a meditative quality.

The christening that marks the beginning of Aurora's story commences a week after she is born, to the day.

A July Leo, the little Princess arrives into the world at the height of a flourishing summer heat, when the golden sun is at its most brilliant. Her mother was a deeply spiritual woman, a quality Aurora would inherit from her, and considered the strong daylight to be a good omen for her daughter's future health.

The path to carrying a child had been an arduous one for the Queen, the royalty concerned for her welfare after the suffering of many stillbirths. When she initially discovered she had been pregnant with Aurora, she was buoyantly joyful until the Court Physician told her she likely could not have the baby and live. Devastated, she beseeched the Three Good Fairies to search for another opinion. Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather sought out all the wizards and wise men of the realm before they happened upon a young doctor who was convinced the Queen could have the baby if she stayed in bed nearly the entire time of her pregnancy. The King was so loving and attentive to his wife during this time.

Now, as the happy news of his daughter's safe arrival reached him, Stefan- too- seemed enveloped by the embrace of the dancing sunbeams on that July day. Like his daughter would later be, he was of an expressive, poetic nature. To his Queen, he suggested the name Aurora- after the dawn- for she filled their lives with sunshine and so that all days could be as golden and warm as this one. They planned for the christening to be a full seven days out, as was the custom at the time due to the mortality rate. A master calligraphist who successfully copied many legal documents by his own hand, the King set about penning and addressing all the invitations personally.

Now, on the very first day of August, the July heat gave way to a balmy breeze. As all gathered around the castle gates, the name of the infant Princess was finally announced. Taken by the song of her epithet, the Knights and Ladies, townspeople and peasants, all joint in song to the processional chorale, "Hail to the Princess Aurora."

edelweiss ⇢ how’d you think of your url/username? what’s it associated with to you? - I came up with "ruindur" many years ago by picking an elvish dictionary (big Tolkien nerd back then) and trying to make up a word meaning "Flame worshipper" for my MMORPG characters. Stuck with me on many websites, Tumblr included, until I met a writer/calligraphist earlied this year and he explained to me that -ruin and -dur are both suffixes, and fixed the spelling in order to mean "Commanding flame". Hence, "Turuin" (because -dur, when used as a prefix, exchanges the D in T). I like the idea of having switched from worshipper to master, not gonna lie.

jasmine ⇢ do you have a movie or book you loved but will never watch/read again? - A show. I watched the entirety of "Too Old To Die Young" by the never enough praised Nicholas Winding Refn, and loved it/watched it in a trance/was enraptured by it but would not watch it again. I think that's also intended.

ivy ⇢ what are your ‘tells’ for your emotions and moods? how can someone tell you’re happy, annoyed, upset or tired? - Face expression (I can make pretty revealing ones) and body language. Also when I'm tired I tend to overshare/overtalk, when I'm upset I tend to be extremely verbose, when I'm annoyed I immediately become annoying and when I'm happy I tend very quickly to get too much excited.

Monday Murals - the Valentine edition.

The Wall of Love.

Not made famous because it’s thousands years old or allegedly can be seen from space like the Great Wall of China but just a wall of “Je t’aime” in different languages made even more famous by “Emily in Paris”.

The wall was created in 2000 by calligraphist Fédéric Baron and mural artist Claire Kito and is composed of 612 tiles of enamelled lava, on which the phrase 'I love you' is featured 311 times in 250 languages

So just like little sheep and because Valentine makes you do crazy things for content: we went, we saw, we photographed and we left.

Upon opening the gift is a book. However, this isn't any book you would ever find in Mondstadt, or even in Teyvat. It's a book of spells that Yvaine has learned through their centuries of travels, each written in exact detail, troubleshooting, and ways to attune said spells to whatever way is most comfortable for Signe. It's as if a calligraphist wrote it with how fine the penmanship is.

Should Signe be able to sense magic, she'd be able to tell a spell had been cast upon the very book. Nothing dangerous; just a self-translating book. You see, it was written in Yvaine's mother tongue, a language none had heard in Teyvat in over five hundred years, back before the cataclysm when the people Yvaine guarded had learned it out of respect for their very god. Now it was in Mondstadt's language for ease-of-reading.

"These spells come from multiple worlds. Should anyone else try to read this book, they'll see characters unfamiliar to them and see it as just a foreign book. No one will know it is even a spell book, let alone be able to read it. This book is for you and only you."

Her first inclination is one of gratefulness. Even before unwrapping the gift, Signe can feel the energy radiating from the package to her fingertips. Finely-attuned to her magic, it would seem— and so very elegantly detailed.

“Yvaine, this is… thank you,” she murmurs, already quite taken with the book. Her eyes shine with each flip of the page, and she seems unable to tear her gaze from the ornate calligraphy.

Her grin remains grateful, and she quickly puts the gift, wrapping paper and all, into her bag. This will be a useful addition to her travels. If she weren’t so taken by the few spells she did manage to see, she might’ve given them a hug.

And then, her grin turns slightly devious, almost cat-like in appearance.

“You know, I have a few scholar friends of mine that might become frustrated at being unable to read this. I’ll try my best not to use this for mischief, but there are no guarantees, of course…”

Gu Gan (Chinese: 古干  b 1942), is a calligraphist from Changsha, Hunan Province, China. He graduated from the middle school attached to the Central Art Academy in 1962. In 1975, he was assigned to work in the People's Literature Publishing House.

In 1998 he was invited by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild to design the wine label for the Mouton Rothschild 1996 vintage, the first Chinese artist ever to be invited for such a project.
