(Marking this post as mature because. STRONG language)
Hi Californians of tumblr! Its ballot getting season, so I'd like to highlight one candidate statement in particular. You may have heard of him before, and if you have, you probably want him dead! Its our good old racist Don J Grundmann!
Tumblr media
So let me tell you, the non-Californian reading this, the good news. The good news is that Don Grundmann is not a serious candidate. He has been around the ballots since at least 2012 and has never recieved more than 1.2% of the overall vote in any election. He has been publically humiliated multiple times, with his most high profile failure being a "Straight Pride" rally that put himself on the record stating "We are a peaceful, racist group." Absolutely no sense of irony on this man.
Pretty much every single ballot submission he's ever done has used this exact same structure, language, even the same websites. FOR YOUR SECURITY'S SAKE PLEASE DON'T ACTUALLY CHECK THOSE WEBSITES, I HAVE ZERO FAITH THEY WON'T JUST INFECT YOUR DEVICE WITH MALWARE OR GET YOU PUT ON A LIST.
So why beat the dead horse? Because regardless of how many times he trots his dead horse of a human body out, its dangerous each and every time. That someone can write *any of the above shit* and be considered valid enough to be PUT ON AN OFFICIAL BALLOT is beyond absurd.
I trust us to run this man out of town for a 12th year straight. May we hopefully! make this the last time he ever steps foot here again.

It always takes me a few hours to do the research for voting on these small elections, i wish there was better organization for comparing and contrasting the candidates -_- but no that would make it too easy.

it truly is so fucked up that so much of this country is denied so many resources for voting, especially in traditionally republican states. they know they'll lose if everyone has equal access to information and mail-in-ballots so they have to do shit like make it impossible for people to get to polling places.
like in my county alone in california we have over 20 different drop box locations for mail-in-ballots, many of them open 24 hours. and I'm not even in a very big county, we have no major cities (the capital isn't too far but it's not the same county). we get a booklet weeks before our ballots come in with a sample of what'll it look like, how to fill it out, and information on places to vote or to mail your ballot. then we get a separate booklet with all the candidates and propositions that'll be voted on, all the candidate statements and the arguments for/against each proposition... all the basic info you could need to make informed decisions.
I know practices are similar in oregon and washington so I'm assuming most traditionally democratic-lead states have similar resources available to them in regard to ballots you get in the mail. and registering to vote is easy, just takes a few mins online or you can register when you get a state ID/driver's license. so what I'm saying is it is absolutely possible for everyone in this country to be provided with this (should be the BARE MINIMUM) but it's not the case in a lot of states and it's absolutely evil.

what did he do?
he said that the only positive thing about being a man is not having a period, and then he said that the pay gap was invented by women who just want to get more money than men and that if men hurt their girlfriends/wives it’s probably because they deserve it

This post is for my fellow USA-ians getting ready to do their taxes and especially folks in California. You have maybe seen another post going around about filing for free instead of paying for software. Absolutely!!! (There are some exceptions of course, but I'm assuming you don't have funky tax situations and are just The Average Filer needing to do a 1040)
If you don't know already, here is what you do for your federal tax: Go to irs.gov Click "File Your Taxes For Free" That next page has some tools to help you find out if you're eligible for free-file and some trusted guided tax software (and also a link to fillable forms, but this post is assuming you want to use the free software) I used TaxAct the past couple years. This is not an endorsement, just one of the options I qualified for and letting you know what I used for the next part of this: State Filing.
None of these free federal tax filing options have let me file my state taxes for free. I vaguely remember being able to do this once, maybe twice in the past, but the majority of the time they have let me file federal for free and then wanted to charge for state. TaxAct, for example, offered to let me "conveniently" file my CA state taxes for a mere $39.99 That's a big chunk of my state return!! SCREW THAT.
This is what you do instead: Complete your (FREE!!) federal tax filing with the software. Opt out of the state tax that they want you to pay for. Make sure you have saved a copy of your completed federal return (this is required for you to keep for your records but you will also need it for the next part).
CALIFORNIA SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS (I'm sorry, but I have never filed taxes in any other state. State taxes vary widely. If you have information on how to file free state taxes in other states please add them in reblogs or notes so other people can find them!)
Go to the Franchise Tax Board website ftb.ca.gov Click on CalFile
Tumblr media
Scroll down on the CalFile page to the bottom.
Tumblr media
You will need to create an account. The password for your account expires regularly, at least annually, so don't be surprised if you are prompted to create a new password next year. You do need to have previously filed a CA tax return at least once in the past 5 years, so I'm not quite sure what the step is if you're a first-time-filer.
It does not import information from your federal tax filing, so yes the drawback is that you spend some more time putting numbers in a form. But also like, you basically just did this, right? So all of the information you need is at hand, fresh in your mind, and CalFile takes you through it all step-by-step. FOR FREE!!!!!
When you get to the end there's an option to voluntarily contribute part of your refund to a wide variety of state funds. No shade if you want your full refund. This is totally a voluntary choice that I want to talk about for a little bit because I don't know how many people are aware of what it is.
Idk what the status of linking things in tumblr posts is anymore, so I've been avoiding hyperlinking anything. If you want to find out more about the contribution funds, from ftb.ca.gov click File -> Personal -> Scroll to the bottom to Contributions -> Voluntary contribution funds
I like to put a little in whichever funds I'm interested in to get my refund to a satisfying round number (this usually ends up being a contribution of around $20 total) and I feel like I have a little control over where my taxes (ish) go.
Some voluntary contribution funds are required to meet a minimum threshold of monetary contributions per year, otherwise they may be repealed! The State Parks Protection Fund threshold is higher than most, meanwhile the Peace Officer Memorial Foundation has no minimum requirement. As a wildlife biologist I like to support the California Sea Otter, Native California Wildlife Rehabilitation, Rare and Endangered Species Preservation, and State Parks Protection Funds.
But again, VOLUNTARY, and you can skip this is you want! Finish filing your state tax and save a copy for your records. In my experience doing my taxes this way I get my refunds within a couple weeks.
Anyway I hope this info is helpful! I honestly spent way more time typing up this post about filing California state taxes for free than I actually spent on doing my state taxes lol

Women's Not So Distant History
This #WomensHistoryMonth, let's not forget how many of our rights were only won in recent decades, and weren’t acquired by asking nicely and waiting. We need to fight for our rights. Here's are a few examples:
Tumblr media
📍 Before 1974's Fair Credit Opportunity Act made it illegal for financial institutions to discriminate against applicants' gender, banks could refuse women a credit card. Women won the right to open a bank account in the 1960s, but many banks still refused without a husband’s signature. This allowed men to continue to have control over women’s bank accounts. Unmarried women were often refused service by financial institutions entirely.
Tumblr media
📍 Before 1977, sexual harassment was not considered a legal offense. That changed when a woman brought her boss to court after she refused his sexual advances and was fired. The court stated that her termination violated the 1974 Civil Rights Act, which made employment discrimination illegal.⚖️
Tumblr media
📍 In 1969, California became the first state to pass legislation to allow no-fault divorce. Before then, divorce could only be obtained if a woman could prove that her husband had committed serious faults such as adultery. 💍By 1977, nine states had adopted no-fault divorce laws, and by late 1983, every state had but two. The last, New York, adopted a law in 2010.
Tumblr media
📍In 1967, Kathrine Switzer, entered the Boston Marathon under the name "K.V. Switzer." At the time, the Amateur Athletics Union didn't allow women. Once discovered, staff tried to remove Switzer from the race, but she finished. AAU did not formally accept women until fall 1971.
Tumblr media
📍 In 1972, Lillian Garland, a receptionist at a California bank, went on unpaid leave to have a baby and when she returned, her position was filled. Her lawsuit led to 1978's Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which found that discriminating against pregnant people is unlawful
Tumblr media
📍 It wasn’t until 2016 that gay marriage was legal in all 50 states. Previously, laws varied by state, and while many states allowed for civil unions for same-sex couples, it created a separate but equal standard. In 2008, California was the first state to achieve marriage equality, only to reverse that right following a ballot initiative later that year.
Tumblr media
📍In 2018, Utah and Idaho were the last two states that lacked clear legislation protecting chest or breast feeding parents from obscenity laws. At the time, an Idaho congressman complained women would, "whip it out and do it anywhere,"
Tumblr media
📍 In 1973, the Supreme Court affirmed the right to safe legal abortion in Roe v. Wade. At the time of the decision, nearly all states outlawed abortion with few exceptions. In 1965, illegal abortions made up one-sixth of all pregnancy- and childbirth-related deaths. Unfortunately after years of abortion restrictions and bans, the Supreme Court overturned Roe in 2022. Since then, 14 states have fully banned care, and another 7 severely restrict it – leaving most of the south and midwest without access.
Tumblr media
📍 Before 1973, women were not able to serve on a jury in all 50 states. However, this varied by state: Utah was the first state to allow women to serve jury duty in 1898. Though, by 1927, only 19 states allowed women to serve jury duty. The Civil Rights Act of 1957 gave women the right to serve on federal juries, though it wasn't until 1973 that all 50 states passed similar legislation
Tumblr media
📍 Before 1988, women were unable to get a business loan on their own. The Women's Business Ownership Act of 1988 allowed women to get loans without a male co-signer and removed other barriers to women in business. The number of women-owned businesses increased by 31 times in the last four decades.

Tumblr media
📍 Before 1965, married women had no right to birth control. In Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), the Supreme Court ruled that banning the use of contraceptives violated the right to marital privacy.
Tumblr media
📍 Before 1967, interracial couples didn’t have the right to marry. In Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court found that anti-miscegenation laws were unconstitutional. In 2000, Alabama was the last State to remove its anti-miscegenation laws from the books.
Tumblr media
📍 Before 1972, unmarried women didn’t have the right to birth control. While married couples gained the right in 1967, it wasn’t until Eisenstadt v. Baird seven years later, that the Supreme Court affirmed the right to contraception for unmarried people.
Tumblr media
📍 In 1974, the last “Ugly Laws” were repealed in Chicago. “Ugly Laws” allowed the police to arrest and jail people with visible disabilities for being seen in public. People charged with ugly laws were either charged a fine or held in jail. ‘Ugly Laws’ were a part of the late 19th century Victorian Era poor laws.
Tumblr media
📍 In 1976, Hawaii was the last state to lift requirements that a woman take her husband’s last name.  If a woman didn’t take her husband’s last name, employers could refuse to issue her payroll and she could be barred from voting.
Tumblr media
📍 It wasn’t until 1993 that marital assault became a crime in all 50 states. Historically, intercourse within marriage was regarded as a “right” of spouses. Before 1974, in all fifty U.S. states, men had legal immunity for assaults their wives. Oklahoma and North Carolina were the last to change the law in 1993.
Tumblr media
📍  In 1990, the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) – most comprehensive disability rights legislation in U.S. history – was passed. The ADA protected disabled people from employment discrimination. Previously, an employer could refuse to hire someone just because of their disability.
Tumblr media
📍 Before 1993, women weren’t allowed to wear pants on the Senate floor. That changed when Sen. Moseley Braun (D-IL), & Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) wore trousers - shocking the male-dominated Senate. Their fashion statement ultimately led to the dress code being clarified to allow women to wear pants.
Tumblr media
📍 Emergency contraception (Plan B) wasn't approved by the FDA until 1998. While many can get emergency contraception at their local drugstore, back then it required a prescription. In 2013, the FDA removed age limits & allowed retailers to stock it directly on the shelf (although many don’t).
Tumblr media
📍  In Lawrence v. Texas (2003), the Supreme Court ruled that anti-cohabitation laws were unconstitutional. Sometimes referred to as the ‘'Living in Sin' statute, anti-cohabitation laws criminalize living with a partner if the couple is unmarried. Today, Mississippi still has laws on its books against cohabitation.

According to this article, California is likely to have its lowest primary turnout in the state’s history — 29%—"in part because more than 4 in 10 voters are not enthusiastic about voting for president or Congress, according to a Public Policy Institute of California survey." Further: "So far, Republican voters have turned in 32% of the ballots, according to Political Data, Mitchell’s analytics firm that monitors turnout across the state. . . .While there are roughly equal numbers of voters older than 65 and younger than 35 in California, so far 57% of the ballots turned in have been from seniors and only 2% from younger voters." (emphasis added) It's not just California.
You don't have to be "enthusiastic" about the candidate you vote for, but you must vote against the candidate you oppose.
Not voting is not a statement of dissatisfaction with the system; it says you are wiling to accept whatever other people decide, even if it's bad for you.
VOTE. Do not let the other side win because you couldn't be bothered to fill out a ballot.

#Repost @beardbrospharms with @use.repost ・・・ #California’s adult-use program has failed to compete with the thriving black market, and this is largely due to municipal policy bottlenecking the #industry. Nearly 62% of cities have banned all cannabis sales, and those allowing retail have severely limited the number of licenses available. However, a recent #ballot #measure shows that several California cities are rethinking their stance on cannabis – 12 local ballot measures passed this #midterm, creating 70 new #licensing #opportunities. California’s cannabis industry is a mess. The state legalized adult-use marijuana in 2016, but the lack of #retail #storefronts has left it with a massive illegal market and a small legal one. The number of licensed retail outlets in the state is lower than it was in 2015, and the illegal market is growing rapidly. And that’s just the beginning: Prop 64 allowed municipalities to opt out of adult-use cannabis. This resulted in the closure of medical dispensaries and created dry zones where no cannabis can be sold legally, even though many people need it for medical purposes. Only 85 of California’s 500 municipalities allow retail cannabis sales. There were thousands of nonprofit medical dispensaries in operation before Prop. 64; today, there are a mere 800 or so licensed cannabis retailers in the state—which means California has just two legal dispensaries for every 100,000 people. Unpromising Outlook of Mobile Sports Betting in California
Unpromising Outlook of Mobile Sports Betting in California
In less than 7 weeks, Californians will be voting to decide whether sports betting should be legal or not. This is because on November 8, 2022, Californians will be voting on Proposition 26 and 27 to legalize sports gambling. However, each proposition will legalize a different aspect of it. One of them is Proposition 27 which would make Mobile Sports Betting in California. According to a recent…
