infinite respect for nathaniel buttons first mate of all time for how his response to a stranger showing up in the middle of the night and asking if blackbeard was aboard was to essentially go “what are you, a cop???”

calico jack slayed and im tired of pretending he didnt. he showed up, fucked around, and successfully manipulated his oldest friend all because Izzy asked him to. he is somehow the dumbest and also the smartest character in that episode all while being whipped for a guy that doesnt want him. and he’s even blond.

I don't like the assertion that Ed doesn't have fun with Jack at all, because it's clearly not true, it fucks with the message they're going for, and kinda flattens Ed. Like yeah, Jack also does make Ed feel bad. Ed's not having fun at breakfast because Jack reminds him of his past actions. Ed's also not having fun from the second he leaves Stede until the second he's back on the ship. He's clearly miserable on that island. But he is having fun blowing up the bookcase, playing turtle versus crab, and coconut war. Ed wouldn't've gotten up and started fucking around with him if he didn't want to, although I'm not denying an element of peer pressure is at play here.
Someone like Jack gets a lot of his power from that disorganized attachment. Jack is fun and familiar, so when he hurts/manipulates Ed, he's also a source of comfort, which can pull Ed back in. This is just a well-known feature of many toxic dynamics.
I also think acting like Ed wasn't having fun playing those games is a detriment to his character. Everyone is having fun except Stede and Buttons. These are pirate games. Even Olu (gentle, soft), and Lucius (the other feminine gay man on the ship) get into it. Liking these things isn't a flaw to be resolved. Stede is just the main character, and we're supposed to sympathize with him in this episode, while Ed's basically siding with the antagonist. Stede also sorta caused a ship to burn down with everyone inside and felt 0 guilt about it.
Anyways, I think if Ed is having fun during parts of this episode, it makes his and Jack's dynamic more compelling and realistic, versus Ed not having fun at all and only doing this out of peer pressure.

see, mom is in love with doug, and also evelyn, but i dunno whats happening with doug and evelyn. evelyn has a leopard and a son named melvin who is technically our brother now.
on the other side, stede-dad is in love with ed and is also friends with mom. stede and ed have a cat named wolf and a cowboy pirate. i dunno where he really fits but he visited once and he was really funny.
ed and stede also have a whole new section of family that i haven’t really “unlocked” yet because they wont tell me a lot about their adventures at sea because of all the violence (>:(), but they exist.
now a lot of people don’t know this but mom and stede had me and alma. alma has a cat named stede the 16th and i have two tarantulas.
and thats most of our family so far.

it’s really not that complicated if you’re not stupid.

I have a whole story in my head about how Izzy was Hornigold's First Mate and was always extremely loyal, if a bit soft on Ed and Jack
But when Ed became the favorite, rumors started flying about Hornigold planning on replacing Izzy with Ed (by having Izzy killed)
And Izzy was super conflicted about what to do about it since Hornigold fucking sucks, but that's his Captain. Loyalty to his Captain comes before all else
But Ed convinces him to mutiny anyway with promises of making him his First Mate and telling him that he just doesn't want Izzy to die. He says that Hornigold doesn't treat him the way a proper Captain should. Izzy can have it all if he just plays along with the plan. He can have Ed and Jack and the position of First Mate and safety
So he takes the first step in the mutiny
Of course, the rumors were unfounded. Hornigold knew Izzy was loyal and he'd never be stupid enough to waste such a valuable resource. The rumors may have even been started by Ed himself

anyway do y’all ever think abt how the straw that broke stede’s back in e8 wasn’t jack insulting his masculinity or interrupting him mid-conversation or insulting his validity as a pirate captain or fake-crying to make him look bad. stede was willing to put up with all those insults and personal jabs, no matter how much they hurt
but when jack made stede question his friendship with ed (“and maybe you don’t know him at all”). that is when stede couldn’t take it anymore. that is what made stede decide “fuck this, i can’t put up with this asshole anymore.”
that, and also the part where jack peed on him.
