Mini-Review: Bee and PuppyCat: Lazy in Space
Bee, an unemployed woman in her early twenties, encounters a mysterious creature she terms PuppyCat. She adopts this apparent cat-dog hybrid, and together they go on a series of temporary jobs to pay off her monthly rent. These bizarre jobs take the duo across strange worlds out in space.
This is the kind of show I often enjoy, episodic while expanding the world and our view as the stories pass; humorous without making me cringe.
It's a very fun show that looks like its aimed at kids, and would probably be fine for that audience--it's not adult humor in the vein of things like The Simpsons or Rick and Morty, but it feels like adults are the audience because of the atmosphere.
Bee is a mess, in a recognizable way: she's been fired from her job for possibly valid reasons but also partially for taking the blame for someone else. She's aimless: if it wasn't for the rent being due, she wouldn't really be looking for another job.
The aimlessness of being an adult, yet not automatically having things all together, is a running theme. Bee definitely doesn't. Her best friend and neighbor, Deckard, is struggling to decide between following his passion, and staying where he is in a predictable environment with friends and family.
His sister Cas gave up a passion project in favor of the predictable work and stability of software engineering, something she has complicated feelings about. Their landlord, Cardamom, seems to have everything all together, except he's a 7-year-old with no adult supervision, and as the episodes go on you realize that his straightforward approach to life is actually a child being forced to handle things that are an adult's domain.
The setting is also fun: it's hard to tell whether things like toilets be a place to store food instead of, well, bodily functions are normal, or why a 7-year-old seriously acting as a landlord doesn't seem to raise many comments. Is this a fantasy land where things are just kind skewed anyway? Or are Bee and her neighbors extra-odd? In that way, it reminds me a bit of Steven Universe, with its mix of cartoon reality and non-main characters eventually making clear that they think this is weird, too.
The actual fantastical bits are interesting, too. We get information about Puppycat towards the end, but he definitely has secrets, and Bee isn't as straightforward as she appears at the beginning, either. Their visits to other planets/dimensions (?) to earn money would be an interesting show even without showing any of their home lives.
You can definitely see the influences of classic magical girl anime, but this show is also the answer to the premise: what if magical girl, but tired adult? What if magical girl, but it's just kinda a job?
Verdict
Voices: Very good! They sound very...realistic, not super polished. I don't mean that they sound like inexperienced voice actors, I mean that they sound real and variable, which isn't common in voice acting. I really enjoyed them.
Also, special shoutout to my favorite character, Toast, whose first line had me wracking my brain to figure out why did her voice sound SO familiar and why was her voice affecting something in my emotions until I looked it up, and her voice actress is the English voice of Sailor Moon/Serena that I grew up with!
Visuals: Vibrant and pastel colors, a very round cartoon style, it feels modern and cozy.
Worth watching? Yes! On one hand, it's just a fun series, the balance between "just living life as an aimless young adult" and "brightly-colored fantastical adventures" is done well. The supporting cast of characters is great and entertaining. And on the other hand, it's also nice to watch a cartoon that feels very much like the target audience are adults, but not because the show is raunchy. I really hope we get another season someday.
Where to watch (USA, as of September 2023): Netflix. Note that a 10-episode original web animation (titled Bee and Puppycat without any subtitle) can be found on Youtube; the Netflix series I watched is both a reboot (covers the original series' material in a few episodes) and then continuation. After asking advice on here, general consensus was that newbies starting with the Netflix series is a good idea, but there's nothing wrong with the older, original web animation.

DR MANDAL: You know I have to ask. Where are you right now with your relationship with Simon?
M BECK: I know. I know I keep flip flopping. But it really depends on where he’s at once he gets out of Summerwhite.
DR MANDAL: I’ve noticed something. Let me know if you think I’m wrong. In all of our discussions about whether you will maintain a relationship with Simon, and what kind of relationship it will be, you always hang your decision on his feelings. His mental health. His experience. Do you think that’s accurate?
M BECK: Yeah. I just want him to be happy.
DR MANDAL: I’d like you to try thinking more about your feelings, your health, your experience. What’s going to be the best for you?
M BECK: I want to be with him.
DR MANDAL: I understand that, and if it works out that’s wonderful. But Matthew, you are still having severe flashbacks. Additionally, you described that interacting with Simon brought on upsetting flashbacks while you were together in the clinic. Now, I see your face, I’m not saying that this would make a relationship impossible. All I want is for you to consider your own health and safety when you think about how a relationship with Simon would work.

M BECK: [Unintelligible]
DR MANDAL: Matthew, take deep breaths. You’re okay. You’re here with me. Breathe with me.
M BECK: [Unintelligible]
DR MANDAL: I know, Matthew. I know.

“And how would you rate your desire to harm yourself, zero being none and ten being you have a plan to kill yourself?”
“Zero.”
The gray-haired doctor, Deckard, glared at Simon over the top of his glasses.
“Lying won’t get you out of here sooner.”
“I’m not lying.” Simon did his best to keep his voice gentle, soft, non-argumentative, the way everyone liked it. It was hard with how much his stomach hurt.
“You were voluntarily a vampire’s chew toy until last week, that’s self-harm. If he showed up right now to take you away with him, would you go?”
“No.” That was a lie. The thought of Matthew - human or vampire - taking Simon away from this horrible place was almost more hopeful than he could bear.
“I’m going to ask you one more time, and if you don’t tell me the truth I’m writing you up.”
Simon winced.
“One,” he compromised, “Just one.”
“Hm.” Dr Deckard’s pen scraped across his clipboard, writing far more than a tally in a feelings chart. Simon’s knee bounced with nerves.
He was sitting across from Deckard in the doctor’s office, a massive cluttered desk between them. It could have been a bright room, but the tall arched windows were covered with cheap blinds. Fluorescent panel lights hung from the water-stained ceiling, flickering just enough to be noticeable but not enough to be fixed. Bookshelves along one wall were too neat to be used much, contrasting with the paperwork-flooded desk.
“My job,” Dr Deckard announced suddenly, “Is to make sure that you are not a threat to yourself or others. We’ve started working on the ‘yourself’ part already.” He leaned forward to look at Simon, adding the clipboard to the stacks on his desk. “Let’s start on the other. Tell me about Lara.”
Simon’s heart rate picked up instantly, his own eyes bouncing between Dr Deckard’s watery blue ones. Surely he’d misheard the doctor.
“What?”
“You became violent while under great duress before, I need to make sure it won’t happen again while you’re here.”
Christian told him.
Of course he did.
“It won’t.”
“Regardless. Walk me through the events leading up to your outburst.”
Outburst?
“I don’t…” Simon felt a lump growing in his throat. He felt stupid for crying so easily, But he was so tired, and his stomach hurt, and he’d only found one friendly face in this whole facility.
“What made you so angry with Lara?”
It wasn’t anger. It was never anger. Simon could never be angry with Lara. But he was so scared of antagonizing the doctor that he didn’t correct it.
Bowers.
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
Dr Deckard tried a comforting smile, but it came off more like a chimp baring its teeth.
“I need to know, it’s for the best. For everyone’s safety.”
I need to know.
Simon was back there in an instant, trapped under Matthew.
This is for your own good.
“I really don’t-” he hiccupped with a suppressed sob, “I can’t-”
I’m not going to hurt you. I just need you to tell me.
Simon pressed his hands to his face, shrinking down in the chair.
“Where are you right now, Simon? Are you with Lara?”
“I don’t want to talk about this.” His voice strained with the effort of speaking quietly. He didn’t want to yell. He couldn’t yell. Not after the first time.
“Is Lara hurting you?”
Even now, Simon couldn’t help but defend her.
“Lara never hurt me,” he said, the words coming out in a low whine.
“Captain Isles…” Dr Deckard shuffled through the papers in front of him, and his voice grew stronger when he found what he was looking for. “Isles relayed that Lara would hit you and sexually assault you. Is that not true?”
It was. It wasn’t. Lara was different. But Simon knew Dr Deckard would believe Christian over him, so he nodded, dropping his hands to his lap and rubbing them anxiously against his thighs.
“It’s not true?”
Fuck.
Simon felt his stomach roll, and he clutched at it. He was given so many pills, and he knew they were wreaking havoc on his body. The doctors and nurses asked so many confusing questions, and made all sorts of assumptions, until it was too far beyond Simon’s ability to explain everything in the right way, in a way that would make sense to them, in a way that would make them leave him alone.
Fucking idiot.
“She did, but that’s not what - that’s not what I’m, I’m upset about, I just - please, I don’t want to talk about this, I don’t feel well!” he sobbed.
“Simon, look at me,” said Dr Deckard, quiet but firm, “You need to try. You have to want to get better.”
He wanted to get better, he really did. Matthew had told him to.
But this felt wrong.
The next tear-filled and flashback-riddled twenty minutes went nowhere. Simon was deposited back in the common room with a protein drink, red-eyed and exhausted.
“Hey sweet thing.” Chett approached him immediately. “Rough sesh?”
Simon nodded gratefully. He had wildly misjudged Chett at their first encounter - apparently Simon was unfamiliar with southern hospitality. He let Chett lead them to his usual table. It was just the two of them that day; Chett’s previous companions were long gone after their 72-hour holds. About two-thirds of Fort Summerwhite’s occupancy came and went like that. It was dizzying for Simon to almost always be surrounded by strangers, especially as he slept in a room with two others. But Chett had become a kindly constant, and he helpfully reminded Simon to keep swigging the protein drink as they played gin rummy with shaking hands.
He was underweight - if he took too long to drink it, he’d get in trouble.
No one wanted to get in trouble at Summerwhite.

i mean. I kinda scrunch up in the corner when I sit on a couch, I guess? Make room for the Boys. When I'm on my laptop I sorta hunch over it.
- I sleep in my bed? however I end up waking up i guess. usually on my back. usually with one of the boys on top of me. occasionally on the couch or in the dirt (though i try not to sleep without my lunar wing)
- What is a comfort day. I have never heard of that before ??? i just exist. glass of wine and a bubble bath, maybe. I wouldn't want to spend an entire day not doing anything if I don't have to

As a result, it takes a bit for Raven to be impressed or surprised by what others say to her. Most of her conversations are carried out with an extremely casual air, and it can almost be taken as if she isn't fully invested in the discussion.
Raven's childhood was a bit more eventful than most because of her perceived beauty. Her parents put her into Muggle beauty pageants, clearly taking advantage of their daughter as well as their magical abilities. Raven has taken care to block most of those years from memory, but the numerous trophies and crowns that still litter her family's living room are enough reminders. This also explains why she does not spend a lot of time with her parents, distancing herself from her family so that she can be her own person. Going to Hogwarts helped with that as well, of course, allowing her to make friends and focus on other things kids do. So when she was seventeen, she knew that she definitely wanted to go out on her own and figure out things.
So far, Raven feels that her life is lacking some adventure. Each night after work, she just goes home to her apartment to spend the rest of the night with her cat.
Raven used to be more adventurous. After she finished school, Raven moved out to live on her own and trained in martial arts as well as received her pistol certification. With this experience and her beauty, Raven began work as an assassin. The job did not last for too long with maybe only about three or four kills under her belt. The fact that she had to seduce people, only to kill them in the end, was uncomfortable (of course), so she left the assassin world behind after only about four years of work (from 1994-1998).
Now, the Organization has dragged her back into the game. There is no turning back, not with her kill count just going up and up and up…

Speed Dreams the motorsport simulator game delivers new features on Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to the dedication of developer, the Speed Dreams Team. Availalbe now with the latest open source build on itch.
If you don't know Speed Dreams, this is a successful motorsport simulator game. Which also features high-quality 3D graphics and an accurate physics engine. Due to give the player sense of realism to your racing gameplay. The project was originally forked from TORCS, but more evolved with a stronger focus on the player. As a result, reaching a higher level of realism. Both in the visual and physics simulation of the game. This is all due to the active development team and growing community.
Speed Dreams now aims to add in new features, cars, tracks, and AI opponents. All due to make a more fun game for the player, while constantly pushing forward visual and physics realism. Which is also designed for research, study, or teaching activity, around physics and AI. This is all due to its GPL V2+ license. And also the clear and modular architecture of its C/C++ code base. Now offering the latest build, v2.3.0.

Before this final version of Speed Dreams, the had gone through a Beta and Release Candidate period. Due to fix multiple errors, even some of the features now see an improvement. The game now features realistic physics and more control types. Including Force Feedback support on steering wheels, local multiplayer via LAN, and split screen.
The most important new features of this version:
Added tire temperature and degradation in Supercars, 67GP, MPA11 and MPA12 categories, in addition to the existing MP1.
New widgets for the Speed Dreams HUD in OSG. Such as tires, forces, delta or controls. In addition to the existing ones.
New sounds in the game menus, as well as in the gear shift, tire skid or some car engines.
New options in sound menu, and In-game volume adjustment.
New interiors and animated drivers in some Supercars models, like the Boxer 96, Cavallo 360, FMC GT4, and the Kanagawa Z35 GT-S.
Now is possible to change the car setup inside the game. Also you can also choose the initial fuel and steering wheel rotation degrees displayed on the game screen.
New cars like the Mango MS7 and the Murasama 37A, both in the "1967 Grand Prix" category
New cars and robots in MPA12 category: Deckard and Spirit added to existing Murasama cars
New track based on the Melbourne circuit.
Added lots of new skins for various Speed Dreams cars. Especially in the LS-GT1 category
