All right, everyone! I think I've cracked the code!

Huge thank you to Juju @loveyourownsmiilee for letting me bounce these ideas on her and helping me articulate this.

So, I think it's obvious that both Marisol and Natalia are not love interests for Buck and Eddie, because the writers are using a formula that has been used before. It's a red herring!

Marisol and Natalia are basically the same as Lucy and Lena.

Now, hear me out. Lena and Lucy were the female equivalents of Buck and Eddie, and were suspected to be there love interests initially. However, they're reflections of how Buck and Eddie used to be at work.

Natalia and Marisol are reflections of how Eddie and Buck used to be with their personal lives.

Natalia is the unabashed, enthusiastic person who embodies her job. She's genuinely passionate about one thing and it's death.

Marisol feels like she has expectations from her family and feels responsible for her brother, who is childish. There were moments when she was on the phone with her mom and her mom was pushing her to find a partner.

They've both made those little things their entire personalities. Just like they did with Lucy's recklessness and Lena's anger.

And this is why Buck thinks Natalia gets him. It's because Buck was her.

This show has always been huge on symbolism; whether it's the color theory, the couch theory, down to the meaning of names, etc.! And in the next episode, it is speculated that Kameron and Natalia are going to end up meeting and it has me thinking about Buck's storyline this season.

Buck has been struggling with what will make him feel at ease and dealing with him dying and coming back. So, what does this have to do with them meeting?

Well, here comes the physical metaphors that the writers love to have in the show.

The culmination of Kameron and Natalia meeting, is the duality of life and death which Buck has been struggling with all season.

But, wait there's more!

Lucy is coming back to show that Buck isn't the reckless, impulsive guy anymore. Natalia represents that Buck isn't the guy whose job is his life anymore. Kameron is reappearing because Buck isn't spare parts anymore, especially defective spare parts.

Also, it took him three tries to perfect the lasagna. He has three exes, three couches, and now three different women to show that he's at ease.

So, I'm hopeful that everything will work out because we know this season, specifically the latter half, has been different for Buck and Eddie.

↳ fluff | 600+ | you heard of lucifer getting drunk and spilling his guts to diavolo now have some the other way around 👍 except he's a lot less dramatic about it

↳ it wasn't an anomaly for lucifer and diavolo to end a day of student council work with a bottle of demonus. but what lucifer did find a bit off-putting that night was the lovesick smile glued to the demon prince's face.

diavolo's eyes were half-lidded as he swirled the glass of demonus in his hand. his cheek rested in his palm with an elbow on the velvet armrest of his chair.

"and how has mc been doing?" he asked.

across him sat lucifer, who leaned forward to the glass table between them, refilling his own glass.

"they're doing well." he replied. "besides dealing the usual havoc my brothers cause at the house."

diavolo laughed warmly. "i see."

a (dare lucifer say) dreamy sigh slipped from the prince's lips as he got lost in his thoughts.

lucifer raised an eyebrow at him. not that he seemed to notice.

"it's study season again.. examinations are coming soon. i wonder if they've been managing to keep up." diavolo mused. more to himself than to lucifer, really.

lucifer watched as diavolo's head tilted slightly further in his hand; and for a moment, he couldn't help but think the demon prince resembled a small puppy. reflections of the nearby fireplace flickered against his eyes in a bright gold haze. from the liquor or whatever fantasies were keeping his head stuck in the clouds, lucifer couldn't be too sure.

"have you noticed anything bothering them, lucifer? anything at all?" he asked.

lucifer shook his head.

"why? have you?"

"..no.." diavolo murmured. "but i wanted to be sure. you know how important it is that their stay in the devildom is as comfortable as possible."

"of course," he nodded. "but.. you know you can ask them these questions yourself, right?"

diavolo blinked at him.

lucifer stared back, unimpressed.

though flustered, diavolo remained unabashed as ever, only laughing sheepishly in response. his hand went up to the back of his nape.

"ah.. yes, i suppose i can, huh?"

"yes." lucifer said. "you can."

at his deadpan tone, diavolo shot him a playful glare. not that it lasted long. soon enough, he was back to staring distantly at a random wall.

"you could also call them, if that helps."

diavolo hummed. he took another sip of his demonus and proceeded to lean against the other side of the couch.

"i suppose i see them so little i forget i can just. go up to them, huh.."

before lucifer could think of a response, diavolo had already jumped into another train of thought.

a bright laugh shook his shoulders, diavolo's eyes sparkling.

"i did see them yesterday though.."

"i believe i remember that."

"yes, i believe you were there.." he nodded.

lucifer was fully aware that this wasn't the first night diavolo had acted like this. but the sheer joy on his face when he talked about the human continued to strike him every time. the grin that rested on his friend's lips was smitten and foolish. the look his eyes resembled the expression of wonder of a child seeing a sky full of stars for the first time.

diavolo's laugh was always full of spirit, really, but this was one of the few times lucifer had ever heard it this giddy.

"heheh.. they brought me some cookies, d'you remember that, lucifer? mc told me i worked really hard and appreciated all of it, lucifer.. could you believe that?"

lucifer knew he didn't quite need to reply at this point. diavolo had had enough demonus to have an in-depth conversation about mc with his own self. still, the knowing smile hidden behind his glass continued to grow as the prince rambled on.

"i think i should call them right now.." diavolo mumbled.

lucifer shook his head. "they'd be asleep by now."

"oh. right."

"you can see them tomorrow at rad." he supplied instead.

diavolo gasped slowly. if he wasn't completely intoxicated before, he must've been then. the look in his eyes was positively starstruck at the proposition.

"yes.. i think i will."

Thirteen and yasmin are insane because watching the show it feels like the doctor is genuinely incapable on some level of truly loving yasmin- even to the extent that she fell in love with previous companions.

Hear me out, (this is a bit of a crackpot theory) something about this regeneration, something in the way she seems to be built as a direct reaction to twelve's late-season unabashed emotionally vulnerability- the way he held onto the pain and emotions and held on HARDER when they hurt, and now thirteen wont even pick them up.

Somewhere in those few seconds of regeneration, the regeneration itself must have latched onto the previous doctor's lingering thoughts- all those thoughts, a whole lifetime thinking about how much everything HURT- of much EASIER it would be to just AVOID all of that to just IGNORE it how he didn't HAVE TO GO THROUGH ALL OF THAT. But regeneration is a bit of a tricky process isn't it? You're usually lucky enough to get the right amount of arms and legs. You'd probably have pretty poor luck if you tried politely explaining"I'm just kind of grieving pretty hard right now and my life sucks ass usually and my desire to not suffer and irrationally blame my emotions themselves for this is actually a pretty common response so please don't overreact and make me incapable of proper emotional expression and connection with the people in my life please that'll actually make this WORSE not BETTER." I mean seriously good luck trying to explain those concepts to splitting timelord cells, I can't imagine they're great with conversation.

So the twelth Doctor's dying and one of his last thoughts is "man if I cared about people less I'd suffer less" and the thirteenth doctor is born (in a sense) woth that thought at the forefront. And she still cares!- so, SO much, but... it's.. different. It's not quite CLICKING. anymore. Things that WERE easy or at least DOABLE before just AREN'T now. Or at the very least they feel WRONG. Like walking around in someone else's shoes. In an old coat that doesn't quite fit. In an old face. And then the universe dumps the doctor right into the lap of 3 new companions with no clue about space or aliens or the doctor or any of that. No idea of what the doctor was like before- of what she is capable of now or WAS capable of before, and she doesn't tell them either.

And so she's walking around and she's keeping this ravine of distance between herself and everyone and everything in a way she never has before and there's no one there to call her out on it, but she pretends! She pretends it's not there! And she's really, REALLY good at it this time- maybe because twelve regretted not being better at it himself, even (but that's a different thought). And sure the companions call her out on it, yasmin in particular calls her out on it A LOT, Ryan, too- but they still don't realise the EXTENT to which the Doctor is (failing? refusing?) to connect with them because they have ONLY EVER met THIS DOCTOR and so they don't realise how drastic the difference is. They lack the proper knowledge to REALISE what is even truly going on with the doctor. But the doctor is still the doctor aren't they. And these are still their companions. And frankly, they're still kind of a dick.

So despite their sudden inability to connect with their companions on a level the doctor has never experienced before, and despite these new companions personalities being so unique and their journey with the doctor being so hectic that the doctor and all of them keep chafing and slipping out of the same old Doctor-And-Companion molds that the doctor keeps trying to shove them all into, the doctor wont stop trying to make these old molds fit! And honestly that never ends up being a huge problem for any of them. It's just kind of an interesting aspect of the doctor- a fascinating way that they sort of dehumanize their friends, by just plopping them in a mold and replacing them when they wear out. Because of course you still care for them! But by giving them a ROLE in your life that can just be REPLACED as opposed to letting them exist as a PERSON in your life once they're gone? That makes things easier. That makes the grief easier to bear.

ANYWAYS. back to the yasmin thing. If you remember the Yasmin thing. So. Yasmin falls in love. Of course she does. And the doctor notices. Of course she does. She's old and more people have been messing with her head than usual but she's good with noticing things no matter what else changes about her. And she doesn't say anything. Because she's a timelord! And Yasmin will die, or fall in love with someone else, or turn into a cyberman, or experience one of the infinite possibilities of horrors or wonders in all of time and space that will tear them apart and the doctor will be left alone again, so what's even the point!

Except then Ryan and Graham leave. And then the Timeless Child arc happens. And it wouldn't hurt to feed into it a little would it? Just to keep Yasmin around? Just to keep her from leaving? It wouldn't hurt right? I mean Thirteen could love Yas! She does! Of course she does! Yas is her fam! Her companion! The only one who's stuck with her through it all!- who keeps calling her out, coming back for her, saving her, taking care of her, helping her- and she's grateful! And she cares about Yas! That's not so different from love, right? And love would make Yas stay! And it'd be easy! It'd take what?- a date? Two? Probably! Humans like dates! And romance! And flirting! She can do those! In all honestly she HAS been doing those- (She gets incredibly posessive of anything that becomes part of her tardis, her world, her home, and well, yasmin has been there a long time. And flirting is fun! And a sort of socially acceptable way of staking a claim isn't it? Not to mention the doctor isn't great at denying themself anything that gets another being to feed their ego.) So she leads Yas on a little. Drops hints here and there. She doesn't really know if she means them or not but she knows that she wants Yasmin to stay, that she can't even imagine Yasmin leaving. And that's love right? Or close enough anyways.

So she decides that she loves Yasmin and that she and Yasmin are "together" in a way and decides not to question it further. Because she's placed yasmin in a new companion mold and herself in a new doctor-companion relationship model, and everything's as it should be! and yasmin has no other point of reference for the doctor, so she settles for what she's given. Decides "this is all she can give. She abandoned Ace and Tegan seemingly without a second thought and didn't even apologize- I guess this is how it's always been, with every companion. That's fine! I can handle this! It's worth it for her." And in the meantime The Doctor is sitting there on the other side of the console fully aware of the fact that this is in fact NOT the limits of her affection, but she's HAPPY, or at least as happy as she will allow herself to be with Yasmin.

Yasmin though. Yasmin WANTS more, she DESERVES more and Thirteen KNOWS this, but Thirteen puts her own desire to both keep Yasmin at a distance and avoid desciphering her own feelings above Yasmin. Eventually, Dan calls the doctor out on this. Pretty much just telling her "You KNOW that she likes you. Do SOMETHING about it." The doctor doesn't say anything but does, in a later episode, sit down on a beach and make a wish with Yasmin. "I wish this would go on forever" both meaning she hopes yasmin stays with her forever and that their relationship never progresses. She has everything she needs from yas- which, for the doctor who with previously loves (i am intentionally NOT specifying romantic interests) became OBSESSED with them to the point of not just self-destruction, but universe destruction? Potential INTER-universal destruction in the case of Rose? How could THAT doctor- because YES this is a DIFFERENT DOCTOR, but this is still THE DOCTOR- ever be satisfied with the disconnected relationship she has with Yasmin if she was in love with Yasmin? If she felt THAT WAY about Yasmin? Like she had for all those comapnions that had come before Yasmin that The Doctor had fallen in love with?

#While all of the doctor's previous relationships DID have hard limits and boundaries #that hurt and limited the relationship and companions in a way that resembled thirteen and yasmin's relationship #at the end of the day thirteen and yasmin still felt like strangers when they parted on screen #at least from the perspective of the viewer #And that too- THE DOCTOR LET YASMIN GO #like yeah the doctor has let companions go before #but they have always had to have been PRACTICALLY RIPPED AWAY from the doctor first #The doctordonna killing donna. Mild IASIP S16 Spoilers

Wow... okay, how the fuck am I supposed to be normal about this show?! Guys, when Mac told Charlie about the threat of Mrs. Mac burning them with the car's cigarette lighter, tears just started falling out of my face. I didn't even have time to stop it. I was not ready for a casually abusive trauma drop in between, and used, as a joke from him. Like Mac is so fucked up that he isn't even aware of the abuse.

Growing up, society told him that no one loves a child as much as their parents do, so he told himself that the abuse, the cruelty, the neglect, that was all the greatest, most sublime kind of love he could ever ask for. To be treated with apathy and disgust is what feels like home.

So, from a young age, he clings to religion; it offers him the same kind of outward apathy. That eternal father doesn't reply back, he doesn't respond to Mac's fears and pain. And that community despises him (clearly evident in his own, long-standing homophobia). His paternal, religious figures teach him to hate homosexuals, and thus hate himself. That's home for him.

It's kind of breaking my heart regarding Macdennis. Maybe...they shouldn't be together??

Like, I know even the creators aren't taking these characters stories as seriously as I do. It will probably never be addressed sincerely (and it could only ever work, if Dennis actually showed up for Mac, without fear or hesitation). But the trauma really hits. I wonder, if maybe Mac and Dennis really can't make it work, when Mac's entire definition of love is so warped. He'd never ask anything of Dennis; if their history tells us anything, it's that Mac would gladly accept abuse, and be even kinder to Dennis for it. Which would give Dennis no incentive to change; he hasn't had that kind of growth yet.

And that just, it makes me really fucking sad.

Because, what if Mac only felt so encouraged to love Dennis because, deep down, he knew that Dennis would always possess that cruelty in him?

Still, they felt like old school Macden in these episodes, and I loved that. (Also, the innuendo surrounding them was almost obscene in the premiere - imo.)

So, yeah, maybe Mac did only pull back from Dennis lately because of his overall rejection of Mac in prior seasons. I mean, he clearly still felt something for Dennis in Season 15, but he seems to be done trying. And maybe that's all it is; maybe Mac is just tired of being in love alone.

But...

Maybe, Mac seemed such a goner for Dennis after ND because that unabashed vitriol aimed at him felt like home, the only love he's ever been taught to expect, the only love he feels deserving of?

And now that Dennis has stopped being so cruel, Mac no longer feels like Dennis could love him?

Because now, they're best friends, just like before.

as someone who has Feelings about House (I was watching it when I became disabled so oof), do spill the House takes?

Gregory House is a relic of early 2000s, vaguely Dane-Cookian, edgelord-style comedy so it's somewhat amusing to watch tumblr blorbify him. It gives me the sense that people are unaware that he's the type to unironically say, "I'm not racist, I hate all races equally". Blorbofication seems to to really rely on projecting on a character, or identifying with them, and House is a character who should be blorbofied with care. Of course you can identify with a character that makes poor choices and behaves badly while simultaneously condemning those actions IRL, but honestly, there seems to be a lot of irony-turned-sincere in the "asshole (affectionate)" sector of various fandoms these days and the push to rehabilitate House in fanwork so that he's a better person leaves me with a lot of questionmarks.

the rest of this is beneath a cut because it got super super long, sorry about that!

Here's one thing I do like about him: sometimes his unabashed assholery allowed House to do and say more progressive things than any heroic protagonist could ever say on television at the time, because radical speech is almost always an affront to the status quo. House could be pro-choice, staunchly atheist and practically allergic to any kind of traditional romantic relationship, and this was all acceptable to audiences because House is intentionally written as an asshole.

He's still an asshole though, in plenty of ways that aren't cute or excusable. The show and the character are plenty misogynist, racist, homophobic and yeah, House is disabled himself, but he's also ableist towards his patients. I'm not pointing these things out to say "don't watch this show because it's bad" but they're also unavoidable truths about the show. It's not subtle at all either, and it extends to production. House MD is famous for its wacky plotlines and doctors committing all kinds of medical malpractice or outright felonies, with the exception of Foreman who got less material because, as House would put it, "black guy". This kind of works out for Foreman because by virtue of getting much less material beyond "only sane man" or "voice of reason" or "endlessly patient with his racist boss", he's the most normal of the cast, and it made sense for him to succeed Cuddy at the end of the series. Every woman on the show exhibits saint-like patience towards him. Cuddy, Cameron and Thirteen could've collaborated to quietly murder this guy and I'd be shocked (well. would I??? this show did some truly wacky things) but I can't say I'd feel a terrible amount of sympathy.

The issue I have with a lot of the recent fic and headcanonry around the show is this "healed by love" trope that I keep seeing pop up. House's most basic traits are that he's 1) brilliant and 2) an asshole. The show asks over and over whether or not House will ever change, and the answer is always no. If he's rehabilitated, he is no longer Gregory House. Like, write what you want but why write House if he's not going to be an asshole? Or if you are going to rehabilitate him, understand that there's 8 seasons of television that deliberately, consistently portray him as being a lost cause in terms of positive character development. I've seen the claim that he's "good disabled rep" and like, on its face I agree with that. House is in pain 24/7, his brain functions differently from other people, he struggles in social interactions, he wants to be loved in spite of knowing he is hard to love, he tries to do better but he repeatedly fails. All of these experiences have a place in fiction, but rehabilitating him revokes that place.

More specific to my own blog, I've encountered a few posts comparing beejhawk to hilson and that's on its face ridiculous. Even if we disagree that Hawkeye is a good person, MASH frames him as a good person whereasHouse is a bad person who is framed as a bad person. I'm more ambiguous towards the Wilson-BJ comparison, but at least Wilson is canonically shown to possess some of the traits that are commonly assigned to BJ within fanwork. House and Hawkeye on the other hand... like Hawkeye and Wilson have more in common with one another, Wilson being compassionate and communicative towards his friends and patients, including House when House isn't being particularly likeable (there actually might be a bit of BJ in House, lol).

imo, it's part of a trend of homogenizing ship and character dynamics, molding characters/ships/settings to certain popular tropes rather than the other way around across fandoms... to what end, I have no idea. I'm of the opinion that nothing in fanfic presents any kind of real-world "risk" in comparison to mainstream media, but it seems to me that presenting all the big gay ships as being "the same", essentially inventing new gay stereotypes is something we maaaay want to move away from. Or at least ask ourselves why we do this with gay men specifically.

okay MASH/perils-of-gay-fandom tangent over. basically, House is a mediocre show, albeit with some very good acting. it offers great fodder for fanwork because the characters are all some kind of hot mess (except for Foreman), it's got plenty of sex and drugs, and despite the fact that every medical drama to ever exist has contained all of these elements setting each other off, there's still a societal expectation that doctors and nurses have their shit together. these are people who are responsible for human life, so they can't possibly be sex-having, substance-abusing, hot messes, right?

So I have finally (FINALLY) reached season four in my Smallville rewatch and it's just incredible how from the getgo it's so obvious how perfect Lois is for Clark. Like she's so obviously made to be positioned against Lana - small town girl vs big city army brat, shy girl next door vs loud demanding and unabashed, goodie two shoes vs smoker - ignore the fact that those are all things that were presented to us about Lana in season 1 and are very obviously not true anymore, that's what we're supposed to believe, blah blah. But putting Lana aside for the moment - which, God I wish the writers would, but alas - Lois and Clark's chemistry is astronomical. She challenges him, she flirts with him, and he immediately (IMMEDIATELY!!) trusts her, and so clearly already has a tiny crush on her. Horror has literally been my special interest for over 5 years now. It's my biggest percentage in both dvds and books and Halloween brings me the most joy of all the holidays or annual celebrations.

Like. I have fixated so much on this genre. I love all of it so much. I love the old Alfred Hitchcock movies I've seen. Funnily enough I watched the Birds before Psycho, but I did see the original Psycho in theatres thanks to a showing they were doing for its anniversary close to two years ago. (Though I'll never watch it again thanks to something that happened after seeing it.)

I love 80s movies like halloween and slashers like that. I've only seen the first sleep away camp but that was my second thought when you sent the ask before this. Because that movie is filled with those sorts of outfits.

I hate Friday the 13th because it's boring. But I love Halloween because it's also boring.

CHUCKY IS THE BEST FRANCHISE. I love that little shit and his mini empire filled with returning cast and writers and directors and prop teams, puppeteers, special effects departments. I love the families that have grown with the series. I love queer horror. Full, unabashed, campy queer horror. And that's what he turns into. And now we have the dramatic horror with teen angst and Devon Sawa's presence every season. I'm so??? AAAAA.

And then you have one off movies, like trick r Treat and Killer Klowns!! Trick r Treat has such a soft spot in my heart and I love Sam as a character. I love the intertwined stories with him at the center of all of them. I LOVE KILLER KLOWNS. It's so bad it's good! And the intro is amazing!

I love modern gore horror! I love terrifier and Saw and I love gore for the sake of gore! I love practical effects! I love watching Art the Clown torture somebody just because he finds it funny. I love the hypocrisy of John Kramer and his devoted disciples, each with their own reasoning for following in his footsteps.

I love modern horror by Jordan Peele! Every horror movie he's made has been in my favourite movies from the year I watched it in. I loved nope last year. I loved get out and us. I love every inch of detail.

I LOVE SHAUN OF THE DEAD AND PARODIES. They're always so much fun!

I love office horror. With the belko experiment and mayhem. They were both fun watches!

I LOVE EXPERIMENTAL HORROR LIKE SKINAMARINK!!!! God I loved that movie so much. It made me genuinely uncomfortable.

I love easy going horror. I love horror comedy. I love how broad horror is. I love every subgenre of horror.

Now I'm just waxing poetic about horror movies but yeah. I could probably easily give over 50 horror movie recommendations and I'd be holding back.

when she's jealous of someone ava knows or is interacting w, esp the longer she's in a relationship w ava, bc she knows thereks nothing to worry about, so it's not really a jealousy thing but for whatever reason michael & beatrice just clash w and dislike each other, and it's mutual

they probably do a bunch of the rich british ways of being rude to each other, like beatrice only ever giving michael microwaves tea, calling him american, michael not doing the whole pinky extend thing in beatrice's presence when drinking tea, not introducing each other by name when there's a need for the two if them to introduce themselves to someone, etc

they're frenemies though because they have a mutual respect for each other, esp in regards to ava and that they know they'll both call each other out on the other's shit if they mess up in regards to her, and also because they're 🤝 repressed rich british people who've had duty engrained in themselves to the point of extreme detriment solidarity with each other (beatrice because of well, we all know, & michael because of reya and the whole "be a human bomb" thing)

yes there's lilith, but lilith is also v openly & outwardly prickly whereas michael & beatrice are more like:

not to mention i get the vibe beatrice & michael grew up w more public scrutiny on them and their family, and lilith & her fam w relatively a bit less, given beatrice is the child of diplomats, and michael's the child of a rich billionaire who founded a massive tech company that's been making waves w medical related tech stuff, and the whole "union of church & science thing", whereas lilith's family is neither of those (afaik), and probably purposely shyed away from public scrutiny on purpose given the public isn't supposed to know about the ocs and loads of women from the family disappearing and/or becoming nuns probably looks shady as hell, esp when you add in the factor of warrior nuns dying young which means those women would disappear to the public permanently and/or die of ??? circumstance

also i didn't really know what the movie i was referencing was either, as i only watched a bit of it from when someone i know was watching it around me, but i googled it and it’s apparently a comedy movie called The Big Year (2011) starring Jack Black, Owen Wilson, & Steve Martin, and my takeaway from the bit of the movie that i had watched and remember is just "office worker is a big nerd about birds" and given the conversation about beatrice & animals and your specific mention of a bird, my thought process was like beatrice & animals, specifically a bird - remember that movie w the bird nerd office worker guy -> beatrice as some Very Serious & lowkey unintentionally intimidating office worker who's secretly (or not really that secretly, people just don't ask so beatrice doesn't mention) a complete nerdy bird enthusiast would be cute and cool as hell

couple of hcs for this specific scenario because it kinda grew a lil bit of a tail thanks to the ✨vibes✨, but

1) one of ava's favorite times in the year, if not *the* favorite time in the year, is bird season because it's one of the few times ava gets to see consistently & constantly unstressed, unguarded, and unabashed about being happy & excited for something she has a lot of passion for, even around people who aren't beatrice's friends & family a bunch of times

2) ava & beatrice's first date, or one of their first dates (which may have been or started out as a blind date) was kinda awkward and stilted until some bird caught beatrice's attention because it's v rare to see in the area or something (idk, i'm not a birder), and despite her attempts clearly couldn't divert her focus, upon which ava amusedly & a bit curiously asked what was so special about the bird, which had beatrice explaining, and seeing beatrice so obv enthralled and passionate about the subject in her explanation had ava like 😍, which officially broke the ice on their dates and sparked the sparks (if they weren't sparked already)

also when i was typing the bit about bird nerd beatrice the first time and in a cool coincidence a bird landed near where i was typing, so have a couple of bird pics

Idk man I'm just so tired of begging on hands and knees for good queer rep. I'm tired of stories where we're made ravenous by seasons of pining or will they/won't they where the ultimate payoff is just the admission that they're queer or in love at all, and then that's it. That's all we're allowed to want, just to have the relationship explicitly canon in the end. I'm so tired of writers/creators treating the withholding of queer rep as a cute little game they're playing with fans. Teasing us, holding it above our heads and letting us become even more ravenous so they can just put one kiss/confession in there and we'll all lose our shit celebrating and never ask for more.

I want more stories where we're allowed to be present for the actual relationship. Its joy as well as its struggles. I want to see lots of realistic, casual affection and expressions of devotion and love. And I want this across many genres. I want this in stories where the couple's main struggle is not just enduring homophobia. I want to see the characters themselves expressing their queerness in unabashed ways beyond the expression of love - show me characters performing drag, going to queer events, engaging in kink and dressing to proudly show it, and for gods sake never turn it into a joke, never turn it into something extreme that you don't have to look at for too long because the main queer character/s are "normal" and consumable for audiences who don't like to think about that side of queerness. Give me queer stories after the confession and kiss take place. Where do they go from there? Why aren't we allowed to want to see that?

And yeah, I know there are some things that do this better than others, and I don't want recommendations. I know that censorship stops people from telling the stories they want to tell. But it's just not enough for me, and I can't muster up the excitement for the scraps we're so graciously thrown anymore. It's no longer enough for me to consider something not to be queerbaiting if all we get is one kiss or confession at the end after being intentionally kept on the hook for the whole thing until then.

Queer people deserve better. Don't tell me I'm not allowed to want it.

Watching

Summer in Pelican Town got surprisingly intense near the season's apex. The heat wave that rose from the asphalt near the broken-down bus was visible, warbling your vision the longer you stared. Everyone always looked parched, even the villagers who adored this time of year. Birds floated about lazily and the siren call of the crisp blue ocean was undeniable.

Haley and Alex basked in the sun despite the searing heat. They lounged together on beach towels, soothed by the salty sea breeze as they gossiped. The only thing that snagged their interest was Casey, the town's very own enigmatic farmer, as he approached.

He'd gone shirtless for his chores today, a dark flannel tied around his waist and a jet black cowboy hat perched on his head. His wiry muscled frame was shimmering with sweat, every scar on unabashed display. Haley and Alex watched, slightly slack-jawed, as Casey marched through the sand towards the dock, an empty bucket gripped in his prosthetic hand and a fishing pole slanted over one shoulder. He waved, his usual terrifying scowl softening when he smiled at the pair.

"Goodness," Haley gasped, blinking sand out of her eyes to clear her vision. "You just know it's big."

"Know what's big?"

Haley and Alex whipped their heads around. Behind them, looking flushed and scandalized, was Elliott. A year of living on the beach helped him traverse the sand and errant pebbles as silent as a shadow. He followed their shared line of interest, his cheeks only burning hotter when he noticed Casey fishing away on the dock. His muscles rippled as he reeled back and casted his line. Even if his busy map of scars were meant to be hideous, they only made him that much more attractive. His mismatched eyes, his charcoal hair artfully streaked with platinum, his strong broad hands, his shapely rear--

"I guess we're all staring, huh?" Haley looked smug as both boys fumbled with excuses.

"A man can appreciate another man's muscles without it bein' gay!"

"Indeed! I simply can find good inspiration for a classical protagonist in someone as physically fit as our beloved farmer!"

"Hey," Haley's intense grin only widened. "I'm not the one having a crisis here. And I'm not the one who has a special nickname for him."

"I was assured he went by his middle name as equally as 'Casey'," Elliott huffed. "Just because I'm the only one who uses it doesn't mean--"

"Y'all alright?"

The trio jumped as the aforementioned farmer ambled over, tipping back his cowboy hat as he approached.

"Yeah, they're just being dumb silly boys," Haley offered Casey a sweeter smile. "Catch anything good?"

"Naw," Casey sighed. He swung his arm a little, rattling the woefully empty fish bucket. "Guess it's not in the cards today."

"Shame," Haley felt pride in holding some semblance of polite conversation while Alex and Elliott openly stared in stunned silence. "I hope your luck improves."

"Thanks, Haley."

Casey started to walk back into town, only to pause. He looked the three over, his scowl melting into a charming smirk.

"It is big by the way." He made a show in hitching up his jeans one-handed.

Haley's eyebrows shot up, her face now equally red as her two unlikely companions. Casey tipped his hat before setting off, a low crackly laugh escaping his chest.
