Rem...Rem...we were no good...right from the start. We...I...should never...have been...born.
Trigun Volume 2, Chapter 8
[ALT ID: A vertical comic of Vash and Millions Knives from Trigun. The top of the comic shows Vash on his hands and knees with his teeth bared and wings out; the middle section shows Knives with his wings and giant sword arm out; the final section shows the two of them as children, standing together while Knives is throwing his hands up in excitement and Vash is grinning at him. Over the comic is the quote, "We were no good right from the start."]

okay so like.  i keep seeing people saying that “they’ve already filmed parts for s5” and also seen a ton of people believing that Will truly did drop the ball on contacting Mike, and thus there’s a lot of off-screen stuff of Mike trying to talk to Will and not making the connection and being SO torn up about it
so like. what if some of that is in the beginning of s5. or as like flashbacks or something. how sick (cool) and sick (heart-wrenching) would that be
i think i would throw up

re-reading what i wrote abt the dickpic... wow roman really was just straight up symbolically castrated as a kid lmao. now he's stuck with this castration anxiety induced-erectile dysfunction bc having castration anxiety alone kind of means yr already castrated. so cool for that to happen! ☺️

It's called Jinsolhan Segye (진솔한 세계), or Truth or Dare in English, with story and art by Yu Myeong.
The premise basically asks what would happen in a world without lies. If everyone in the world could only tell the truth, but the MC is the only one who can lie.
HEAR ME OUT THO I'm usually not into stories with high school settings but this one's worth it. Trust me. Like it straight up has some of the best writing I've seen in any manhwa. The foreshadowing and character depth are just. mwah. top tier. And the prose itself is so poetic and philosophical too.
What drew me in initially wasn't so much the art style itself but rather... the art's use of symbolism, paneling choices, and thematically significant color palettes. Does that make any sense. Like in terms of craftsmanship of both art and story it's such a hidden gem.
The thing I love about this manhwa though is how even though it revolves around the binary concept of truth and lies, there's no simplicity in this story.
It's more like a thought experiment that commits to playing out the scenario in its entirety, and it becomes a commentary on human nature as it poses deep philosophical questions.
This story reaches out to you, the reader, and makes you think.
What is a lie? What is a truth? Is the truth at a single point in time immutable or can it be changed? If the absolute truth is a lie, then is every spoken word the truth?
If truths are absolute then how does that affect human relationships? Is trust possible in a world of shallow truths? Does love come from understanding or does understanding come from love? Can you truly love someone if you will never fully understand them?
What is the meaning of existence when no one believes you exist? Does loneliness breed arrogance or starvation? Is being different an advantage or does it make human connection impossible?
Can you justify changing your fate if it involves blurring the dichotomy of true and false, right and wrong? Do you have any right to mourn the narrative if you're writing it yourself?
ANYWAYS lol I haven't even finished reading it yet but it's already making me want to reread bc holy shit. I need to see it in a new light. It's one of those stories that recontextualizes the beginning and in terms of analysis it's a gold mine. The writing is so good it's making me insane in real time
TLDR: read truth or dare for an existential crisis <3

Hi, everyone. I have a new article up on Substack looking at the Backrooms meme and some related media. It's entitled "Heavenly Purgatories: The Postmodern Labyrinth."
The images above are some of the photographs I took over the years when I lived in Boston and which, for me, convey a kind of atmosphere that I feel is vaguely adjacent to the subject matter.
Here are a few responses to the piece from elsewhere:
I think I like the comparison to purgatory. To me this kind of stuff has a deep appeal, since I often have dreams like this, and enjoy physical spaces with the feel of being haunted by absence. Something about finding beauty in bleakness maybe. But also it can be truly nightmarish and I associate it with the labyrinthine recesses of the Unconscious. The idea of a dreamy maze-like space which I associate with Chamber's The King in Yellow, some of Stephen King's work, and House of Leaves. A piece of Dream Country constructed from the bones of human artifice. I deeply enjoy melancholic feelings a lot of times when I'm having them tho, so this is probably why it resonates so much.
The assessment that it's like the inversion of feng shui is very accurate. An interesting piece of media that explores this thematically is Shadowrun: Hong Kong, in which an eldritch demon attempts to use a perversion of feng shui to break a hole in our reality.
have I pushed "Junkspace" on people here? it's a 1999 essay about architectural design - the author is very negative about a kind of open plan modular nonspace that was expanding then and is ubiquitous now - that I think Backrooms (mostly unintentionally) taps into. the essay has kind of a poetical expression, I think you'll like it. he has another essay out there, that I can't remember exactly but he says sort of "there's no Public Square any more, the symbols of 'Public Life' are things like trash and theft of construction materials and the smell of pee in the urban environment, because that's the remainder of human life that can't be made private and paywalled while more and more of the built environment is anonymized and dehumanized." I feel like the Backrooms Monster is a very similar sort of spectre. What lives in this environment where nothing can live??

still thinking about the sapnap bbh son and grandson paradox. in greek mythology familial relationships aren't meant to represent actual blood ties but rather they are metaphorically representing alliances or the validity of the power of certain gods, for example, any connection to zeus makes you important and therefore it is more logical that you relate your oc in your play to zeus than to i dunno, ares, although obviously if it makes sense thematically for the new character you want to introduce to be part of the war then you would make him his son, there's also something one dude said about kinship and the validity of patheons but I don't know much about that, it's so cool tho. what i meant to say is that of course when we look into the dteam's dynamic it is a father and son and that can be extrapolated to bbh being sap's grandfather and at the same time when we look at it through the sense that both he and dream are brothers he's his son, there's two relationships that symbolize different properties

I have stayed out of it, but Goncharov is.. sublime? Complete strangers telling a story together, so much different, so much the same, but with SUCH FEELING! The outpouring of, I'm not exaggerating, creative genius that's been directed at this site-wide game of "what if we could make our own movie and no one could stop us". The artfulness, the thematic brilliance, I've seen treatises on the lighting and the symbolism of clocks and time and ITS ALL REAL EVEN THO IT NEVER EXISTED! ITS REAL BECAUSE WE LOVE IT, ITS REAL BECAUSE ITS A STORY WE WANT TO TELL EACH OTHER! "Listen to this story, it's a story a million people told eachother because we looked at the world and knew it would be a better place with this story in it!" Honestly, what is more magical than that?! I love all of you!

CHARA 😭 Will there be an exact reason why they "live" in a tent outside of the house, as well as why they're in their "Demon" form constantly after the timeskip?
the tent is a symbol of them distancing themselves and their "I can take care of myself/I'll carry the burden myself alone" mentality. That's why it's a big deal when they move back in at the end of the main story.
from a directing stand point its because I wanted to have the monstrous traits more apparent and obvious from a glance. And its also for simplicity. The premise should be clear from the designs. "The fallen humas are resurrected as monsters" becomes more obvious after the timeskip. then it works for maximum contrast between light and dark forms.
But for in universe, I've made it so the monstrous form becomes more and more apparent faster than in the original run. It didn't really make sense that Raine was only REALLY changing at age 18 when Chara was getting closer at age 16. And on a thematic level, the puberty metaphor(?) Works more for a teenage age than young adult age. (Tho, I guess that makes Raine a late bloomer?)

Hello…love your work & NS! I love both team 7 pairing NS & SS. So just curious, who do you ship sasuke with? For the NS manga specially?
Hi there!
As I said, for me it’s all about that thematic symbolism and as I’ve always said since the inception & conception of this story, for Sasuke I’m gonna go the SasuKarin route. 😊
I’m a pretty big fan of the symbolism of these two so I want to keep that going.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although I was initially a multishipper and used to ship SS back in the day too, with time and development things changed for me. Nothing against whoever ships them, they’re just not my cup of tea in canon.
In fanon tho, yeah I could talk about things I would’ve liked to see for them and I even have an idea for a SS mini comic that I wanna do one day lol (just so I can express visually my take on it), but idk when that’ll be tbh.
Atm Kaika and my own OG’s are my mai concern. 😊

My favorite part of an anime opening is picking it apart for spoilers/predictions SO THAT'S WHAT I'M GONNA DO FOR ONE PIECE HERE WE GO
As of writing this I'm caught up to Ep 1093 and know of a few manga spoilers for Law, Kid, Kuma, and Bonney, but everything else here is gonna be predictions. SPOILERS MAY BE AHEAD, BE WARNED.
Tumblr media
Starting with the first thing that caught my eye, Luffy looking at someone standing on the ruin of a giant metal thing! Who is this person? Is that a giant's suit of armor? It looks like it was cut down with a giant axe. Why is this part of egghead so worn out? Can't wait to find out cause I cannot piece this one together from context clues!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next there's all the Vegapunks. Looks like there's 6 of them, and they seem to work in pairs like Lillith and the guy who told her to be careful (can't for the life of me remember his name tho)
Tumblr media
Of course we can't forget about CP9 and the return of Lucci. Can't wait to see what that bastard gets up to in the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next there's a set! The Vegapunks, Garp's Marines, and Cross Guild. I think these are simply flashes of characters that will be important for this arc. It is interesting that Cross Guild is paired with these two. The Vegapunks used to be allied with the marines, but I have a suspicion that they'll become a neutral party in this upcoming arc. I'm pretty sure CP9 is after them, and they've been set apart from both pirates and Marines in the opening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now HERE'S WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING. We know Coby was kidnapped by Blackbeard, and we know that he's going to have to escape, presumably with the help of his fellow marines (especially if this opening is anything to go by). But pairing Coby with the question "Are your dreams still pure?" 🤨 Are they still pure, Mr. Marine? And is that old man Luffy and baby Jimbei? And who is the glitchy hand high-fiving Atlas? A hologram or something more thematically relevant? Are the Vegapunk's dreams still pure?
Tumblr media
Anyways shout out to the Heart Pirates and Fem Bepo especially. Everyone talks about Fem Law but I can't wait for the Fem Bepo appreciation to start rolling in. He's so cute! Let's talk about Fem Bepo and not the fact that the Heart Pirates are definitely 100% fucked by the foreshadowing here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another set, this time of Coby's marine crew and Kizaru's asshole nephew. The marines are paired with the evil pirates they're facing and the civilians they want to save, and Kizaru's nephew is paired with a line of Pacifistas all aiming past him at the viewer. Perhaps showing the difference between them. Coby's crew can distinguish between enemies and allies, the pacifistas see only enemies?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This next set is with three characters. Kizaru, Kuma, and Seraphim Jimbei. They're all following the same movement arc, and from the way Seraphim Jimbei falls into the water, some later frames in the opening, and (manga spoilers), I suspect that these characters *might* not survive. Not completely sure about this cause I don't think Seraphim Jimbei will die too easily, but Kizaru is probably screwed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh yeah, Kizaru's definitely screwed. Anyways, this particular analysis gets into manga spoilers, but I think these frames are about those left behind if I'm right about Kizaru, Seraphim Jimbei, and Kuma not making it thorugh. There's no third character though, so maybe Seraphim Jimbei means something else.
Tumblr media
OOOOooooo its the guy Lilith was paired with, sitting behind a really creepy-looking wall with handprints. He looks sinister as FUCK. Can't wait to see what happens here!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This sequence was interesting. It's the Seraphim, being comforted like children. Especially Boa. There's DEFINITELY some symbolism being captured here when Boa looks at the camera, a star drops, and we cut to Luffy. Something tells me that the Seraphim are more human than the Navy would have us believe at first, and maybe Boa's affection for Luffy carries on to her Seraphim self? (hopefully in a non-romantic context cause that'd be weird as fuck).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OOOH BOY A BIG BATCH HERE. I think these are all the fights in the upcoming arc. Luffy rematches with Lucci. Kid battles (Manga Spoilers) (interesting that he's the only one who's deliberately obscured, kinda like how we don't know anything about him really). Law fights Blackbeard. Garp fights Kuzan (which will be interesting since he used to be a marine and now works for blackbeard), and if Zoro's not fighting Seraphim Mihawk I'm gonna eat my shirt.
Now I rarely say this about anime openings, but I think this opening has a theme, and I think it's going to be reflected across the entire egghead arc. "When random contexts / start to make sense on their own" something will happen. These random contexts are all the different fights across this arc, and this opening is deliberately drawing parallels between them. All of these fights are driving towards the same goal, they're all fighting for the same end. They may be separated by space, but they're allied against the same thing. The world is moving and these will be the people who move it forward.
AND APPARENTLY I'VE RUN OUT OF IMAGES I CAN ADD SO GUESS WHAT I'M SPLITTING THIS UP INTO TWO PARTS SURPRISE

Do you think Kataang will still happen in the LA? That EW cover of the four of them where Kiawentiio drapes herself over Dallas has me worried.
So. I'll be honest here, I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. It's apparent that the writers only thought about adapting Book 1 so far, and have been prepared, if needed, to have Book 1 be treated as a story of its own. So I think we might have some very small hints here and there, but nothing that will be clear. And for most of book 1 (at the exception of the Blue Spirit episode), Zuko will be an antagonist to the Gaang, and Kiawentiio has already spoken up several times about how her big moment with Zuko is "Katara kicking Zuko's ass at the North pole". Now, if the show works and does get renewed? It'd take years to develop stuff and age would basically become a non-issue at this point. I don't want to worry about that, because no matter what, we'll always have the source material, aka the cartoon, where Kataang are a thing and that is set in stone, it's never gonna disappear and it's gonna be featured in ATLA studio's future projects. I do think not writing Kataang into the LA would be missing out on a huge bunch of symbolism and heartfelt moments, and big dimensions of the characters of Katara and Aang as individuals. I do think at best we'll have Kataang, at "worst" we'll have nothing, for whatever logistical reason, them just not wanting to touch That Shipwar with a stick or whatever. But I'll never believe that "fandoms" could ever sway or force writers (or producers for that matter) to change characters' direction so drastically (unless they're petty, like Jason Rothenberg, but I don't even consider him a writer anymore anyway). I think ZTs could make a petition with 5million signatures demanding ZT in the show, it wouldn't happen if the writers don't want it and don't think it thematically matches their story and characters (and spoiler, it doesn't match ATLA, since it never happened in the cartoon). Really, I just do not want to engage in this LA adaptation thinking about ships (guess I'm getting too old for that lol... also they're children so it makes me take a step-back, like in Stranger Things where I used to - because I won't watch anymore - just not care because they're basically babies). I live in an ideal world where people would finally appreciate ATLA's central symbolic relationship, and that is Zuko and Aang (but thanks to the Shipwar(tm) they're always pitted against each other, which is the most ridiculous thing possible I'm just gonna get upset if I keep going ffs). That's why I'm so pumped about the producers having made Dallas and Gordon have chemistry reads, because it's the heart of the show, really, how these two are constantly bound together by destiny, hope and "soul" (reincarnations, previous lives etc). To me, them testing chemistry between these two actors, makes me believe they understood the assignment (that, and Albert Kim saying that APPA is Aang's best-friend and is basically just vital to Aang). I'd advise people not to read too much into photoshoots tho, they're photoshoots. Kiawentiio and Dallas Liu are friends, let's not overinterpret "marketing" stuff, because it's just marketing, not the story, yknow? 🤷‍♀️

More pokemon? More pokemon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Realizing as I'm posting this that I'm only doing the ladies,, as it should!! They're on my mind constantly 🫶 posting them together as it should! I'm going to ramble more under the cut thing
First of all! The Boss!
Not her full team actually, because I can't decide quite on her last two pokemon,, still, the ones I wrote stand strong there to me!
Rapidash is a stand-in for the Andalusian, and the regular form I feel is most fitting; as in the anime (if I'm not remembering wrong) it's stated that Ponyta's flames at least will only burn those it doesn't trust. Now Togekiss! The Jubilee pokemon! To tie in her title as The Joy. It is also a pokemon representing peace, and thus very elusive to see.
Then Basculegion, which according to its lore, evolved from a Basculin fueled by other dead basculin souls, which I feel fits with the losing of comrades in battle during war (plus, a ghost type to connect her to The Sorrow)
Last of her choices I'm sure of would be Mienshao (if you saw me assign that one to Meryl and now backtrack no you didn't) which is the CQC tie in, agile and deadly!
For the penultimate slot, firstly I was thinking Absol for its ability of forewarning danger and tragedy, useful in the battlefield I feel! And it also ties in with Absol quite disliking conflict, and being shunned by others for trying to protect its land,, I feel she could connect with that. But also, Maybe a clefable to have that space theme somewhere!
And for her last last spot,, I would love to give her a legendary,, thinking Cobalion or Suicune for this fact! Both noble beasts! The former being the leader of its own group of strong pokemon, and a very calm, powerful and respected pokemon. But for Suicune's case, the grace and it being a symbol of purity also fits in quite nicely.
Now... Strangelove! (I'll end soon don't worry)
I didn't write her whole team out, but the most important of all here would be Floette. Which, very similar to AZ's, holds an uncommon flower for its species; holding specifically one of the red flowers found around the Boss's dying place. But it can't use Light of ruin,,, as much as Strangelove would benefit from that (anti men laser beam go!!!!!!)
Next, Vivillion. Icy snow pattern,,, it looks nice I'm sorry there's thematic tie-ins here tho it's mostly the aesthetic,, BUT!! The butterflies appearing in the boss AI!! And the fact I made Otacon have a few bug types (I'll talk about him some other day)
And her last two would be a female Meowstic, as they are much more agressive than the male counterpart and quite proud and powerful Pokemon; and a Lunatone! To relate to her time in NASA and the space mission she went alongside the Boss.
Okay rambles over,, for today! I am way in deep with this I am insane!!!!!!

i have media studies exam (although mock so its fine) that i didnt study for so im gonna force myself to practice by applying barthes narrative theory to season 1 hannibal (vaguely tbh cuz its the whole seasom but ok)
hermeneutic codes(how do u even pronounce this omfg) :
enigma codes, they are def crucial to this show as each episode raises more and more unanswered questions as the audience continues watching the show, questions like who is commiting the crimes, is will ok, does he know how fucked up his clocks are, is crawford fucking stupid, is abigail ok, what the hell is hannibal doing, why are they using cat guts for strings, are the dogs gonna live oh my god please can the dogs be okay for once
usually done by leaving cliffhangers for each episode
it drives the audience forward and interests them so they continue watching the show to find out the answers to their questions
its also a convention to use hermeneutic codes for horror crime shows like hannibal
Proairetic codes:
action codes, the actions done to drive the narrative forward, previous events drive other events into action. ngl this one is fucking stupid to apply i dont get if i ever apply it correctly
in hannibal, proairetic codes tie a lot with hermeneutic codes as the actions of the characters raise questions for the audience questioning their choices and makes the audience wonder what will happen next. the action creates tension and makes the audience wonder how the created problem(if there is one) will be resolved. for example when hannibal lecter called abigails father to inform him that "they know" and that fbi is on the way. this drives the narrative forward as then the audience wonders how the characters will react and wonder how the actions will affect the story. this action ended up with abigail becoming an orphan and their suspect dead, creating a few side plots and introducing new characters. this constant tension created by each action drives the narrative forward and engages the audience to continue watching the show
semantic codes:
connotations, things associated with something, the deeper level meaning of a symbol. this one is hard yet so easy cuz theres literally SO many of them
they basically give insight into the plot and characters, building personalities and maybe even starting the deep questions the audience will have
for example, for hannibal, hes quite sophisticated, the semantic codes for that would be how he wears suits all the time, his overall style and his acquired taste. those things connote sophistication, wealth and even control and power (especially the suit and his high respected position as a psychiatrist)
but another thing that can be derived from things like how hes always careful, always has a cloth that doesn't leave any fabric fibres, how he doesn't use anything digital, only physical things like journals to leave no traces, the fact that hes literally eating his evidence lmao, his knowledge and experience of human anatomy and mind connote that hes a careful, experienced, ambitious man and prob(definitely) is a serial killer
symbolic codes:
it has such an easy concept that its literally confusing to understand. its basically symbols, binaries, a thematic/structural device, but it's basically about themes and contrary signs specifically, which is ig why its kind of difficult to understand since its specifically binary symbols
some symbolic codes in hannibal would be life vs death, clearly a reoccurring theme with all of the crimes happening, good vs bad, murderers and their victims, health? both physical and mental? stability? work vs personal life? idk its so hard to pin point it even tho its so easy and common idk
a better example woukd be the bad vs good binary used in star wars with ghe colours of light sabers
Cultural codes:
literally cultural and social conventions, knowledge that comes from the outside world of the text, specific connotations used
example, FBI for crimes and america, religion and faith, the whole fbi units especially medical, even Christmas is a cultural code as its a celebrated event of certain social and cultural and religious conventions
bruv i cant think of any more examples even tho i know theres so many
hope yall enjoyed my silly analysis of hannibal as my media studies application practice if u read it all xx
