Okay so I basically got this question in what, January?? but I’m answering it now since I just rewatched the movie and have inspiration, sorry for the late reply Anon

Okay so, to start off this post with some keyboard smashing because that my primary go-to for expressing my emotions

I could legit stare all day at his beautiful face… look at him. Enchanting sky blue eyes… fluffy, wavy brown hair, cute round cheeks, lovely smile… those hidden freckles that you can hardly spot and only in certain screenshots but nevertheless they’re there to raise the cuteness factor… ALSO HIS LASHES. MAYBE IT’S NATURAL?? MAYBE IT’S MAYBELLINE?? WE SHALL NEVER KNOW

Here you may be able to spot the freckles if you squint hard enough. I have 77 screenshots but this is the best example I could find.

Secondly… well, he’s a sticc. A short sticc at that (though still slightly taller than me bc I’m smol), but a sticc regardless! And that seems to be the most attractive cartoon body type for me. Don’t judge me, I just have a thing for twinks, I’m… twinksexual or whatever.

Look at him! He would fit through my doorcrack.

(Maaaybe the reason for me liking sticcs so much is partially the fact that I like the idea of a boyfriend I can protect and support, physically and emotionally. I’m mad at the universe for not letting me scoop him up in my arms bridal style and smooch the HECK outta him.)

I’ve encountered a few posts that claimed he’s got cake but, come on. That concept has canonically been proven to be false, even by Lance. This man is flat and you can pry this opinion off my cold, dead hands.

Speaking of hands! I like his big ol hands. Nice shape. They look soft. I wanna hold them.

According to a DVD commentary, and the visual facts, he has no shoulders whatsoever. Back in Venice Killian was able to restrain him effortlessly with only one foot on his chest, even as he kept struggling ans squirming and generally put in as much effort as he possibly could. Before then, he claimed the database was the first thing he has ever caught in his life.

Conclusion, our boi’s very much NOT athletic. Which makes sense for a scientist, braining all day and stuff, and because he probably barely even eats, or sleeps which are by the way both pretty concerning implications but anyway.

STOP BEATING UP THIS POOR FRAGILE LAD FOR GOD’S SAKE. Makes me want to protect him even more. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but you get what I mean.

Now, on to the actual reason I’m so head over heels for him, a.k.a his personality.

He is one of the sweetest, kindest, purest boy characters I have ever seen in fiction, if not THE number one himself. (All my other cinnamon roll crushes are, or have been a villain at some point and WILL resort to violence if provoked.) Look at him, his pacifism… is unbreakable. He’s dead set on making the world a better place, by peaceful ways, and helping humanity. If that’s not a quality to be cherished then IDK what is.

And he’s just such a refreshing character. He likes pink, K-dramas, glitter, kittens, things that aren’t traditionally “masculine” (but is never made fun of those things in particular in the movie) and I love that. Nothing’s sexier than a man who’s, despite society’s shitty standards, openly and unashamedly himself!

His femininity is, if anything, just another turn-on. (This didn’t intend to sound sexual… but oh well.) I love his little hand gestures and mannerisms, dorky ramblings, the way he says “yep” popping the “p” at the end, all the small yet significant traits that were incorporated into his character. Bless you, SiD creators, bless you.

Have I said that he’s a genius?? Which is pretty obvious but c’mon, he graduated at 15!! He can modify human genes!! He successfully turned a man into a pigeon on the first try!! (The serum wasn’t the first prototype but we can assume he didn’t experiment on living humans with the previous ones.) And he’s still just 20!! Like what is that if not hella fucking impressive???!??

His inventions, to the untrained eye, may seem “stupid” or “childish” but alas! The observer couldn’t be more wrong! Because despite the odd designs and themes they’re all highly effective, as we have witnessed in the battle against Killian. And he is extremely creative for coming up with such ideas! Told you he’s brilliant!!

Which makes me all the sadder about how much they underappreciated him at the agency. In his words, nobody ever listened to him, or gave him a chance. They just left him and his “weird” ideas next to the men’s bathroom and called it a day. How could they be so blind? Didn’t they see the potential in his inventions? Oh well. Maybe I’m just being a smartass bc I have more knowledge, living outside that universe. But I’m totally right.

And I was honestly ready to throw hands with Lance for hurting the boi even further. (I’d stand no chance whatsoever, but still.)

Oh no baby please don’t cry.

He did cry in that scene though… you could see a tear rolling down his cheek and if it wasn’t for the machine beeping… He did have a pretty rough day afterall. But HEY, if we dwell on it too much the scene loses its comedic effect!! A guy gets sad over a stupid soap opera, har har har!! Now let’s move on, keep it fast and snappy for the kids, don’t let them overthink it!! Can’t have any emotional breakdowns onscreen. Keep it lighthearted y’know. Then let’s kill a random side character and have our dear protagonist almost die twice.

(Well jokes on you Blue Sky! I’m no kid, but a devoted fangirl who can and will overthink any material of my fictional faves at any given opportunity.)

You know what else I love about him though?? His love for animals!! And pigeons, especially Lovey!! He loves her so much, gives her gluten free breadcrumbs, nuzzles her, the first thing he does when he finds out Lance can talk to the pigeons is ask if she loves him too!! Like… That’s so pure and wholesome.

This here. THIS RIGHT HERE. BROTP forever.

(Not gonna lie, I used to be crazy for pigeons for like, an entire year or something. Not as in looking up all the facts there are about pigeons as I do nowadays with cartoons, but I’d feed them regularly and write my little observations on their behaviors. Did you know they sometimes scratch their neck with their leggies like dogs do?)

I think I’ve summed up mostly everything I love about this nerd. Oh wait, almost forgot the sass!! I love how sassy and smug he can be sometimes, in like, a really harmless way but it’s still a very nice characteristic.

Since I’ve ran out of coherent things to say, here’s an incomplete list of things I want to do to Walter Beckett. Put at the end of this post so those of you who were only here for the analysis part and not the selfshippy gushing don’t have to read further:

LONG POST

Ryusoulger Episode 1 reactions! Aka, the episode that decided to come for my life.

In no particular order:

Okay, so maybe it’s a little ‘hm’ that Kou pilots the mech entirely on his own. But it’s not the first time anyone has piloted a mech alone--including non-Ranger allies. The first person who springs to mind is Commander Aya from Jetman. In GoGo V, the robot assistant Mint piloted the robot alone once. And besides, it’s only the first episode. We’ve got plenty of time for the others to get in there.

I’ll be honest. I knew the Masters were probably going to die. At the very least, I knew something bad was going to happen to them.

What I was NOT expecting was THAT.

Ryusoulger scores one for on-screen death and incineration.

First fight of the new Robo Suit Actor (I feel so bad I forget his name). Thank you for your service Kusaka Hideaki, I wish you all the best.

But let’s go back to the beginning!

Dramatic ceremony that apparently no one else is around to witness.

Wait, so if Mynasouls/Minusouls are already being made/Druidon already showing up, and just have never reached the tribe before... Does that mean Touwa and Banba have just been doing a really bang up job of fighting them off? I mean, I expect the stakes are raising sharply now, but... Could cause tension in the team if there’s a ‘the only reason you guys had a peaceful life for so long was us’ sort of thing.

Also, Kou having a little bit of prankster in him is super cute. Are you and Touwa going to get into prank wars that drive the others nuts?

Random fact I didn’t notice before? In the opening, when the others are flying all over the place and Banba is just sleeping? He’s holding two RyusoulKen. The boy is freaking holding his brother’s sword for him, that’s so cute.

I’ll see if I can’t use this video to get a shot of the pendant looking like it’s changing colours and put it at the bottom, okay?

It has since come to my attention by rewatching this that Mystery Scarf Person is standing next to a torch that looks similar to the ones used in the ceremony scene this episode, which could indicate that he is Gold. Or... Related to the tribe, at the very least.

But the most important question to ask as to whether he’s Gold... Does he has Chainsaw?

I am never going to get over that chainsaw thing.

Also looks like we may have Druidon we haven’t seen yet, which doesn’t surprise me. Tank dude is clearly going to be Kou’s rival, but maybe one of the other Druidon was responsible for what happened to Banba and/or Touwa’s Master? (assuming Touwa had one and wasn’t solely trained by his brother)

I’m loving that little shot where it’s Ui sitting alone and then the others come over to her and it looks like they’re encouraging her (well, Banba just stands in the back bc he’s a grump but also solidarity) and then they all look at the sky. I live for the implications that there’s going to be a theme of companionship in this series bc I LOVE FRIENDSHIP. I LOVE FOUND FAMILY. And given how they trio (and possibly the brothers, too) lost people so important to them at the start, I think they’re all gonna need it.

I like them cutting the logo free. I also like the way it looks like stained glass for a hot second before becoming the usual red and yellow.

Sentai mooks continue to be distracted by pretty lights and it remains their downfall.

Kou! Don’t break the camera!

Dan seems pretty fussed that Druidon showed up. But... If he knew that the other two had gone to fight them, shouldn’t he already know that?

Hey, look! There’re other people!

Aw! Kou is trying to be comforting!

And... Gets shoved into the mountain. I love these three.

Oh my gosh, he tries to tackle Ui, but she just bops away, I love her.

Well, we’ve found the source of the bananas.

I love Melt hiding the banana behind his back like it’s incriminating evidence...

I think Kou is looking to the other two for help here and they just abandon him. God, he’s so adorable, though, I just wanna pinch his cheeks.

Also that fraction of a second ‘I got myself into this’ face right before the cut to commercial. XD

WHY DOES HE HAVE A HAMMER? WHAT DOES THE HAMMER SAY?

The Masters are on a nature walk!

No, I’m kidding, they’re probably on patrol or something. But it looks like they’re on a nature walk.

Wouldn’t it be funny of one of the other Masters, if they exist, was played by the Ichimonji of the KR NEXT films? Is he even still acting?

Not the ankles!

Do the Masters have other names?

Why does Tank dude being in the temple cancel their transformations?

What I love about this fight is that Master Red and Kou are clearly worried about each other. Red yells for Kou when he’s thrown, and Kou tries to protect his mentor. It’s cute!

Until tragedy strikes.

Is Kou ever gonna be able to hear ‘Tata Soul’ again w/out thinking of this?

God... It was a gut punch when Red got hit by those slashes, but I was not expecting Pink and Blue to get fire breathed.

Also, yeah, there were better ways to do that, but that’s always true w/ diving saves. Maybe they didn’t thank they could pull them out of the way in time?

The complete silence was a good choice. IS this the same director responsible for that scene in Build where Misora tells the others Kazumi is dead? Bc this reminded me of that. If so... Man, you do ‘characters losing someone indescribably important to them’ very well.

I’m still not entirely convinced we’ve seen the last of them. Maybe only in flashbacks or as spirits, but you’re telling me you hired Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask/Kamen Rider Ibuki, and even an alternate version of Hongo Takeshi/some other dude from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (?) to kill them off in one episode? After those press announcements? Maybe they were trying to cover up what was gonna happen, but I’m not convinced. I mean, maybe their previous parts aren’t that big a deal, but it really seems like the went for a bit of name-recognition there... Are they gonna throw that away after one ep?

I will not deny I was emotionally encouraging Kou to get up and kick Tank dude’s ass right there. You can do it, sweetie!

Tank dude gives a speech while Mushroom creature is greatly distressed in the background.

Also the first time I watched I wasn’t thinking about that I was too busy crying.

Also I guess Tyramigo does talk, but... He seems fairly... Well, he doesn’t talk much. He’s got, like, two lines. I’d kind of like a serious, more ‘stern’ red rex. Hmm... Maybe the personalities of the Kishiryu reflect the predecessors’?

So here’s the jam. Doe you predecessor have to die for you to be the ‘true’ inheritor of the RyuSouls? Did Elder know this? If so... You dickwad.

Kou giving Tyramigo pets on the nose was super cute. I think I would kill for Tyramigo.

Also pretty sure I would kill for Kou, he’s very cute and now I love this actor.

Still very distracted by the way the Elder’s wig does not match his beard. What the hell, costuming?

So here’s my question. Do the special coloured Souls absorb the souls of the Ryusoulgers who die while tied to them? Are gonna have an ep where the team have to go ‘inside’ them or, like, summon the souls out of them, AtLA style? Are we gonna meet the original Ryusoulgers at some point?

Okay, but... The Elder uses the word ‘nakama’ when telling the trio about Touwa and Banba? At least, I think he does... Doesn’t that usually have ‘friendly’ connotations? Makes it seem like the two are less straight up ‘deserters’ and just... I dunno, went through the apparently necessary rite of passage of having your mentor/predecessor die before the others and were allowed to leave? I’m confused.

I don’t know why we needed to transform here, but I love the dancing mechs.

Also they did do a ‘three swords’ version of the ‘swords of justice’ thing. I am literally going to start crying--for very different reasons than this time--the first time all five of them do it together.

Still sad I didn’t get to see my boys in the preview, but at least I know they’re coming soon.

Also still can’t get a read on whether we’ll be hiding our identities this season. I kind of like it when they do do that, it adds another layer of tension to things, but it’s fine if they don’t, too.

Looks like Pink is gonna be yeeting her boys.

I’m liking this so far and I can’t wait for all my children to get together.

On the ED: I live for the dancing mechs. I could spend hours analysing everyone’s reaction to the cartoon Soul meteors. That was adorable. Still don’t know why Banba has different dance choreography, but it’s cute.

Digital french toast and pancakes for anyone who read all that.

All in all, I’m enjoying myself. I don’t usually cry at shows, but I just... I wasn’t expecting it to go that far. This is someone who directed some of Build, I suppose. I think we’re in for more agony.

And I love it. XD

Okay, so... (Ignore my boys screaming in the background please--not the most flattering picture of Banba I know, but leave him alone he’s sad DX)

So... It’s definitely just the way it disappears, but... The other three colour don’t do that? So either it was just a style choice bc there’s only two colours on this side and three on the other and I’m overanalysing, or...

Pretty Boy and Pretty Girl (Part 3) - Cody Christian Imagine

Requested by Anonymous: Can you do a imagine where the reader is doing an interview at the comiccon, and she's on the stage, and she's answering fans questions and Cody's among them (and she doesn't know bc he had told her before he wasn't be able to make it) and he asks her to marry him

2 Years Later

Y/N scanned the crowded room in front of her. She had been asked to attend a comic con in Nashville. She had done a couple of comic cons before and she enjoyed every minute of it. She loved meeting and interacting with her fans. She listened to every story told. She hugged every fan and even wiped the tears away for the few that cried because they were finally meeting her. She did the photo ops like a pro and didn't mind doing any poses if the fans requested one, and she made sure to personalize every single autograph.

That was her favorite part of the con. However, doing panels was a different story. She was always afraid what kind of questions fans would ask her, especially personal questions that didn't involve talking about her music career. Plus, she was always worried she would say the wrong thing or stuttered while trying to answer a question.

"Being on stage is completely different than being on this kind of stage," she answered a fan question. "When I'm on a comic con stage, I get extremely nervous," she chuckled. "But when I'm on stage to perform, I'm more at home. It's comfortable. I know what to do and I know what to expect. I have control. Here, you never know what you're going to get," she chuckled nervously. "But this is fun. I get to meet some of you guys at my booth and some of the questions you ask me are interesting," she laughed again.

"What is the weirdest question you've ever gotten from a fan?" The moderator asked.

Y/N paused for a second, trying to think of a good answer. "If I could be a sock, what kind would I be?" The crowd laughed with Y/N. "If you think about it, it's actually a good question. I mean there are so many different types of socks. Long, short, no show. Cotton. Colored. Striped. Cartoons, and the list goes on," the crowd laughed at her response.

"Alright, I think we got about 5 minutes left, which means we probably have time for one more question. Maybe, two," The moderator said as he looked at the next person standing in front of the microphone, waiting for their turn.

Backstage, Cody was watching the entire panel. He had arrived shortly after she had gotten on stage and he was going to surprise her when she got off stage. He knew she was going to be here and he told her a little white lie. He said he would wrap his movie the day after tomorrow, when actually he wrapped last night. He had planned it earlier this week when production told him he would finish a few days earlier than expected. Y/N had no clue he was waiting for her backstage with a bouquet of her favorite flowers.

"Hi," a tall girl said with a huge small. She wore a shirt of Y/N and her band members from a tour a couple of years ago. "My question is kind of personal, so it's okay if you don't want to answer it." Y/N hesitated before she nodded her head, motioning the fan to continue. "Could you tell us the story of when you first met Cody?"

Y/N smiled as her mind flashback to the moment Cody opened the door at Dylan's house. She giggled, causing all the fans to smile while waiting for her answer. What she didn't know was Cody had asked the sound guy for an extra microphone to go on stage and answer the question himself, surprising her and her fans.

"That's a very good question," she smiled. "I-"

"I think I should answer this question," Cody spoke to the microphone as he made his way up to the stage with the bouquet of flowers in one hand. The crowd went crazy, cheering, clapping, and screaming for Cody's presence.

Y/N's eyes were immediately filled with tears, touched by the sweet surprise. She got up as he stood in front of her. He gave her the flowers, which she greatly accepted before placing them on the table. They embraced each other in a tight hug. She buried her face at the crook of his neck, trying to fight the tears from falling. Cody chuckled as he ran his fingers through her hair.

She pulled back and cupped his cheeks. "What are you doing here?" She chuckled as the microphone picked up her voice and echoed through the speakers for everyone to hear. "You're supposed to be filming."

Cody chuckled. "I wrapped last night and flew in this morning to surprise you." The crowd aww-ed at their adorableness.

She leaned in and gave him a quick kiss, which he happily returned. Normally they're not one to show PDA in public, but they hadn't seen each other in a month because of their busy schedules. She didn't care. She needed one simple kiss to hold her over until they got off the stage.

"Plus," Cody spoke clearly and directly to the mic in his hand. "I thought I'd tell my version of the story because my story is far less embarrassing than what actually happened," Cody chuckled.

Y/N's head rolled back as she laughed hard. She grabbed his hand and sat him in the empty chair next to hers. "I'm interested to hear your story."

"Well, our mutual friend set us up on a blind date. He knew I had a crush on her and he knew she had a crush on me. We had dinner at a five-star restaurant, where I swept her up feet and won her with my charm," Cody explained, keeping it short and straight to the point.

Once again the crowd aww-ed.

"As if!" She laughed. "Don't believe him. He's definitely making this story up to save his own ass."

"Come on, babe," Cody playfully whined. "Don't tell them the real story." She gave him her best puppy eye look that involved her bottom lip pouting. Cody groaned in defeat. "I can never say no to this face," he pointed to the crowd, who laughed. "Fine. Tell them."

Y/N cheered before she spoke. "I showed up to surprise my friend, some of you may know him, Dylan Sprayberry." The crowd went nuts when she said his name. "And when I rang the doorbell, I was expecting him to answer the door, except I got someone who was far too pretty, almost like an Abercrombie and Fitch model," she pointed at Cody, "and he just stood there with his eyes wide and his jaw to the floor. I kept talking to the guy, but he didn't hear me. He was frozen."

"I was in shock," Cody corrected her with blushing cheeks and trying to fight the shy smile on his lips, but failed miserably.

"It wasn't until I snapped my fingers in his face and called him 'Pretty Boy'. That pulled him out of his trace," she smiled as she playfully squeezed his cheeks with one hand, instantly making his lips look like a fish.

"You know this babe, I was completely mesmerized by you."

She chuckled. "I know. You had drool coming out from the corner of your mouth," she joked, earning laughs from him and the crowd.

"I think that's the perfect way to end the panel," the moderator laughed. "Thank you, Y/N for being here and thank you for surprising everyone Cody," he said as he shook their hands before the couple walked off the stage. "Guys, remember Y/N will be here the rest of the day and all day tomorrow. Be sure to stop by her booth sometime this weekend."

"I can't believe you're here!" Y/N squealed once they were backstage. She wrapped her arms around his neck. "This is definitely a nice surprise."

Cody pressed his forehead against hers. "Good, because I have one more surprise for you."

"What are you up to, Pretty Boy?" She asked with a raised eyebrow.

"I made us dinner reservations tonight, Pretty Girl," he smiled.

"Sounds good," she smiled back at him.

"Can I get you anything else?" The waiter asked as he picked up the empty dessert plate.

"No, thank you," Y/N smiled at the waiter.

"Are you ready for the check?" He asked.

"Go ahead and charge me," Cody said as he pulled out his wallet and gave the waiter his card.

Y/N smiled at Cody. When the waiter left, she reached over for both his hands across the small table and held them. He was wearing a black button up shirt. His coat was hanging on the chair. His hair was styled with a little bit of gel, kind of giving him a sexy and slightly messy look. A look Y/N loved and one that always tempted her to run her fingers through it, but she always fought back to not ruin it.

Cody interlaced his fingers with hers and smiled at her. She wore the diamond studs he gave her for her birthday last year and around her neck was a diamond music pendent necklace he gave her last Christmas. Half of her hair was pulled back as the rest was down in beach wave curls. Her make-up was light and simple. She wore a black strapless dress that showed off all her curves. He took mental pictures of all her features. She was absolutely beautiful tonight and he wanted to remember this night for the rest of his life.

"Tonight was absolutely perfect, babe," Y/N's smile widened.

"The night is not exactly over yet," he smiled. Before she could ask what he was up to, the waiter returned with Cody's card, the receipts, and a blue pen. Cody quickly signed the receipt with a big tip for the waiter and grabbed his copy. He got up and walked around to pull out Y/N's chair. She got up and grabbed her small black clutch. She leaned up a little and kissed him. Cody had reserved the back room to themselves and there was no one around to worry about PDA.

She smiled in the middle of the kiss before pulling back. "I have no idea what you're up to or what tonight is about, but I love you, Pretty Boy."

"I love you too, Pretty Girl" he smiled as he grabbed his coat and wrapped it placed it on her shoulders. He grabbed her hand and led the way out. He gave the valet his number. They stayed in a comfortable silence as they waited for Cody's rental car.

As they drove off and made their way back to Y/N's hotel room, Simple Plan's "Perfectly Perfect" came up on the radio. A smile immediately plastered on both their faces as they remembered the first time they heard that song and danced to it in Cody's living room after he cooked her dinner. Cody lifted their linked hands and kissed the back of her hand before he sang the song to her. Y/N's heart was full. She couldn't imagine ever loving someone else, let alone as much as she loves him. She was perfectly happy with him.

The song ended the same time Cody pulled up to an empty parking lot. They made their way to the elevators and waited patiently for it to go up to her floor. Cody pulled out the spare room key from his wallet and opened the door. A trail of rose pedals started at her feet. She turned around to see Cody with a small smile and shrugged his shoulder as if he knew nothing about this. She followed the rose pedals until she reached her bedroom door in her suite. She twisted the knob and opened it. She gasped as she saw her room had been decorated. There were lit candles throughout the room and rose pedals around the bed and on the bed in the shape of a heart. A dozen of white roses stood on each nightstand by the bed.

Her heart was thundering against her chest as tears welled up in her eyes. Cody had done a lot of romantic gestures during their two-year relationship, but nothing compared to this grand. Suddenly, she knew what was about to happen. She's heard from her mom and her older sisters a girl knows when a man is going to propose to her. She had that feeling right now and that feeling was right.

She turned around to see Cody already kneeling down on one knee with a black box in his hands. He held up one of his hands, asking for hers. She chuckled as tears escaped from the corner of her eye and placed her left hand in his.

"Baby-"

"Yes!" She immediately said, earning a chuckle from Cody.

"You didn't even let me say anything," he chuckled some more as tears welled up in his eyes.

"I'm sorry," she chuckled as she carefully got down to her knees to meet him. She cupped his cheeks. "I'm sure you have this great speech-"

"I do," he smiled.

"And I know you have a very important question to ask me-"

"The most important one I'll ever ask-"

"But I want to tell you something first," she smiled.

"Okay," Cody chuckled.

"I love you, and I knew the second you opened Dyl's front door, I was going to spend the rest of my life with you."

"Funny," Cody chuckled again as more tears welled up in his eyes. "I was going to say the same thing."

"So, yes, Cody. Yes, since the first day I met you. Yes to every day since then. Yes today and yes to all the days ahead of us," she leaned in and kissed him.

Cody's arms snaked around her figure as he kissed her back with the same intensity and passion she had given him. There was nothing rough or heated about their kiss. It was sweet, gentle, loving, and absolutely pure bliss as they both cherished this moment that would forever change their lives. It was also a moment they would look back on several times as they spend their lives together.

They slowly pulled back, but rested their foreheads against each other's. Y/N swiped the tears from his cheeks. Cody's arms left her waist to opened the black box. Y/N gasped as she saw a beautiful princess diamond ring. He pulled the ring out of the box and grabbed her left hand. He slowly slid the ring on her wedding finger. Cody held her hand as they both admired the new jewelry on her wedding finger.

"It's absolutely beautiful," she whispered before she kissed him once more.

He pulled back and cupped her cheek. His thumb brushed her cheek as his eyes never once left hers. "I love you, Pretty Girl."

She smiled at him. "I love you, too, Pretty Boy."

Atari 8-bit lucky dip!

The Atari 8 bit was never a popular machine in the UK. Given its relative obscurity here (...if there's one thing I'm a sucker for it's the obscure) and the fact that it's a product of a fertile period for one of the most famous gaming brands, I've always been interested in getting one to play with.

After a bit of fishing on Ebay I managed to get a 600xl for a reasonable price; old hardware is getting pretty expensive and A8's seem more expensive than most. The 600xl is the smaller brother of the flagship 800xl, and is appealingly diminutive for an 8 bit micro. It does have one main disadvantage - it only comes with 16k of ram, so until I can upgrade it to 64k I'm left with a machine that will only be able to play simpler, earlier titles.

Scrubs up quite well!

I bought a flash cart (an UNO cart, which has worked flawlessly) and loaded it with games that should play on my 16k machine. Among the conversions of popular arcade titles of the time, there were many that I didn't recognise. Over the coming weeks I'm going to trawl through all of the games I can get to work and give them each a short review ...for better or worse...

Abracadabra

TG Software / 1983

Wander round a single screen maze blasting wizards with your magic, collecting keys and treasures. To make things more exciting, the walls move periodically, changing the layout of the maze.

I really thought I was going to like this game. These single screen maze shooters are often a lot of fun, but sadly the movement of main character is stiff and awkward here. He seems to want to follow a narrow path even where it looks like you have a wider area to move in, leading to frustrating moments where you push a direction and nothing happens. If there's one thing an arcade style maze game needs it's precise control, so I can't recommend this one.

Alien Ambush

DANA / 1983

This is a fairly basic vertical shooter with a scrolling star background. The graphics are chunky, but a bit muddy - more like an early C64 game. One or two aliens appear on the screen - simply shoot them and avoid their wreckage. Sometimes they split into smaller enemies when hit. It’s competent enough, but there's not much to make this one stand out.

Alpha Shield

Sirius Software / 1983

This seems like a simplified Star Castle rip-off, and is a game which I remember previously playing on the Atari 2600. This version is very similar, though a touch more colourful. The original version seemed like a clunky attempt to get around the limitations of the 2600, substituting the Asteroids style point and thrust controls of the arcade for more traditional directional control. While it qualified as a decent effort for that machine it’s a bit out of place on the much better equipped 8-bit.

Anteater

Romox / 1983

Extremely similar to the arcade game Dig Dug with most of the excitement sucked out. A single anteater follows your ant through the tunnels left behind as you dig through the layers of earth. The goal here seems to be to collect ant eggs from a pile on the surface and bring them back to your nest. It might well get more exciting as the levels progress, but I found the first one so tedious I refuse to give it any more of my precious time ...especially as I know there are 2 different official conversions of Dig Dug itself coming up later!

Asteroids

Atari / 1981

F-ugly but functional take on one of my favourite games ever. Asteroids is one of the handful of early arcade games I always enjoy playing. It's an ageless classic, so a mediocre conversion like this is a real shame. It has chunky and jerky graphics, and the movement of the ship is too crude to properly capture the feel of the original. It's not the worst game ever, and has a handy 4 player mode if you're using an Atari 400/800 with enough joystick ports... but it's not a patch on the 7800 version, and even the cut down Atari 2600 is probably more playable despite it's inaccuracy.

Astro Chase

First Star Software / 1982

Can I skip the intro where astronaut walks slowly to their ship and takes off please? This has quite nicely drawn graphics for an early game. You fly through a maze of planets, scrolling in 4 directions. You can shoot some enemy spaceships... but what the hell am I supposed to be doing here? I’m not sure instructions will improve matters, because there seems to be no urgency or excitement to this game at all.

Atlantis

Imagic / 1983

A conversion of the Imagic Atari 2600 classic - like a simplified version of missile command designed to fit in with the limitations of the VCS. You have control of 3 defensive turrets protecting a city from an attacking space fleet. When I say ‘control’ what I mean is that you can choose to fire lasers from one of the turrets, but you cant change where they fire; one goes left, one right and one straight up. It’s purely an exercise in timing shots, made more difficult by the possibility of one or more of your turrets being destroyed. This is just a small graphical upgrade over the 2600 version. It's a playable game for sure, and gets quite frantic, but I never found it quite as fun and well balanced as its inspiration.

BC's Quest For Tires

Sierra On-Line / 1983

A sort of proto-typical endless runner, this has very bold cartoon graphics for early 80's game. You control a cave-guy riding ever rightwards on a single stone wheel. You start off by jumping pot holes and ducking under branches. There are some sections later where you have to time a jump over a river on some bobbing turtles backs. It's got some entertainment value, but I found it pretty repetitive stuff and I got stuck timing the river jumps. Bit of a theme forming here - games that wowed people with fancy cartoon graphics are often exposed as hollow experiences after a few decades have passed!

Beamrider

Activision / 1984

This is more like it! A solid version of a fun old-school shooter. This could be described as being like a simplified version of the arcade game Tempest, played out on a flat plane. You fly over a grid toward an infinite horizon, blasting enemies as they travel down fixed lanes toward your ship. I liked this one on the Atari 2600, and I like it here too. It's got the right mix of stylish but abstract graphics and frantic game-play to feel like it could have been an arcade effort of the time, something that many of these games clearly aspire to.

Berzerk

1983 / Atari

<Thwak!> ... boots Atari across the room ... I can't get this to work on my flash cart for some reason. I love this game, and I know from past experience that this is probably the best home version around (or at least the best that was released at the time). The game-play is spot on, and it has quite a bit of the metallic robot speech that livened up the arcade version. When I get a working copy of this it will get the full review it deserves.

Blaster

Williams / 1984

The only home version of a really obscure Williams into the screen arcade shooter, this is blocky and slow, with crazy psychedelic line drawing graphics. Apparently this was made before the arcade version, but was never officially released. It’s as basic as they come; you avoid things and shoot things. The game-play is shallow, the controls are treacly and the graphics are possibly seizure inducing .... and yet I somehow found this one quite appealing!

Boulder Dash

First Star Software / 1984

A stone cold classic dig-a-thon. You move through a scrolling level, hollowing out the earth a behind you to collect all the diamonds. Once all are collected you can exit to the next level. Making things more difficult, rocks dotted about will fall when undermined - a crush danger - and butterfly like enemies follow you through the tunnels you leave behind in the earth. The levels take on a heavy puzzle element - much more so than in Dig Dug, from which this takes some inspiration. The patterns of rocks have to be worked round with careful consideration to get all the diamonds. This seems like a great version that I'd like to spend more time with.

Bristles

First Star Software / 1983

Here is quite a likable single screen platformer where you catch lifts to visit different parts of the screen in order to paint all the walls. As expected, there are enemies to avoid who will bump you down a level on contact. There's also a 'lady' who wanders the halls leaving dirty hand prints on your new paint work. These have to be repainted to complete the level and she'll make you swear with rage before too long. When all the walls have changed colour on move to the next level with more walls to paint and more enemies to avoid. Being repeatedly bumped down the levels by errant enemies and lifts can frustrating, but once you have the hang of what the game expects of you it's fairly compelling.

Buck Rogers Planet of Zoom

SEGA / 1983

A conversion of the early SEGA into the screen shooter. This one appeared on many of the computers and consoles of the time, no matter how primitive - there's even an Atari 2600 version. The arcade game must have been very impressive at the time, using scaling sprites to convey the impression of barriers and enemies rushing toward you from the horizon. Sadly, like most of these home conversions, this version looks crude in comparison, sporting flickery graphics and jittery controls. It's also missing a 'trench run' stage present in the arcade which I'm sure could have been re-created in some form on the home hardware. It's not a terrible game, but has aged poorly and is ultimately pretty dull. I did like the colourful psychedelic flashing when a level is complete!

Captain Beeble

Inhome Software / 1983

This one didn't look much at first viewing, but turned out to be quite good fun, if frustratingly difficult at times. Fly around caverns on a jet-pack, fighting against the effects of gravity and blasting all the aliens on each scrolling level. Making things much more difficult, large crushing blocks fly across the level and deadly walls fry you on touch. I've always enjoyed games where you had to fight against gravitational effects, and it adds quite a bit to what would otherwise be a simple game. The graphics are quite plain, and this would be an easy game to overlook - give it a go.

I wish I could speak every language ever ;;;;7;;;; I can’t decide! I think Spanish would be good to learn and I would love to learn Arabic. Mostly I’d love to learn bits of languages that my friends speak so I can visit them someday!

13.) Favorite candle scent or scent in general?

Vanilla scent is a gift from God. I also love the smell of a perfectly ripe nectarine and Febreeze dryer sheets (smells like security)

14.) Best thing about each season?

Spring: Winter is over, and soon it will be warm and I can plant my garden!

Summer: I LIVE it is short here, but I live for the hot temperatures and I can just wear my tank and shorts and go outside, and I’m just in a good mood just because it’s summer. My ideal aesthetic fashion-wise is summer clothes so i tend to do more with my appearance in summer.

Fall: fall makes me sad bc winter is coming and summer is over but I’m trying to re-learn to enjoy fall. The leaves are always very beautiful!

Winter: winter makes me cry but the snow is pretty when you can just stay in and watch it! Also I can wear fuzzy socks and sweaters

Every fandom I’ve ever been in is a weird obsession ;;7;; when I get into something, thats all I live for for a good number of years until the next thing comes along. It’s all think about!

Big enough for a nice big drawing center, lots of plants and books, and anime figurines xD and a sitting area with a lil couch! Cozy and with little lights in it. Warm.
