I gonna break in this acocunt with me being angry about something that doesn't really matter (very fitting for tumblr if you ask me), this article.

First: "And I’m sorry to open with this, but part of that is due to the age difference between them. Two years is hardly worlds apart (I’m personally working with four), but a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl are. Especially the way these two are drawn. Not to be too voyeuristic about Y7 cartoons, but Katara has clearly gone through puberty, while Aang hasn’t. There is something just…off, about a sixth grade boy having a full on make-out sesh with a high school girl."

This argument is one of the most stupid ones if you ask me, because it blatantly ignores the culture we have been presented by the show. I can understand why people find this weird, but we have to try not to look at it as if its our society, because its not. In A:tla, specifically the water tribes, 16 is marrying age. Right there, our "age norms" (idk what else to call it) are very different. And there are no divisions between ages in their world like we have with middle and high school. To me, two people are fit to be together based on their maturity, not their age. That's why 45 & 40 is not the same as 15 & 10, or 20 & 15. This is the same for Kataang. They have very similar life experiences and matured together, literally side by side, so a two year ago gap is irrelevant.

Second: "...Katara took on a very maternal role with Aang. Sure, she’s a caretaker and sort of a “mom friend,” but it’s a bit more than that. She served as his literal guardian during the show’s run—there’s just no other way to look at it. By the third episode, she called herself his “family,” and later even went on to role play as his mother to get him out of trouble at school. Aang, meanwhile, was… Well, I wouldn’t say “immature” for his age, […] However, Katara is 14 going on 25, while Aang is just, Aang."

Katara definitely acts motherly towards Aang, but that is just her nature. She is more than just motherly with him. And some people like to call the check kisses familial (which is kinda weird imo), but we know Katara herself doesnt think that:

"Easy there, big brother" She pushes Sokka away. Not to mention, this was about a scene or two before she kisses Aang on the check.

Calling someone close to you your family does not mean you see them in the same way you see your parents/siblings. And Sokka played Aang's father in that scene, but we aren't sitting here using that as evidence to call him Aang's paternal figure.

Something Aang haters forget (or chose to ignore) is that being lighthearted and goofy does not equal immature. Yes, Aang does some juvenile things, but that shouldn't take away from his growth and maturity.

Third: "In fact, in the last season, Katara was shown to be uncomfortable each time Aang kisses her, and even went as far as to tell him to back off with the romantic stuff in the episode before the finale, because she was confused about how she felt. [*new paragraph*] Yet, in the end, she just trots up and blushes at Aang, than happily makes out with him when he goes for it,"

Katara initiated 2/4 of the kataang kisses (not including the check kisses). The kiss in The Cave of Two Lovers and the kiss in the finale. Yes, she's the one that "goes for it" in the finale (she also initiates the hug). She only pulls away once out of the 3 times we see a kiss end (this would be excluding the kiss in The Cave of Two Lovers). She wasn't confused about her feelings, she didn't want to have to worry about a relationship when they were nearing the end of the war.

Fourth: "The post-canon comics only furthered the lack of exploration of her feelings in this relationship"

Fifth: "[referencing a scene in The Promise in which Katara is jealous of a fanclub being around Aang] "I'm sorry, this amazing, adult communication is blowing me away"

The are both still teenagers, who have zero previous relationship experience. Also, Aang had no ill intentions and Katara recognized it.

Sixth: [refencing Katara's role in The Legend of Korra] "Did Katara want to do anything other than sit in a healing hut and be known for having Aang's kids?"

This is another argument that just pisses me off. You can not use Katara's lifestyle in her 80s (she is 85 in s1) as judgement for her adulthood. It's purely assumption based. Constantly this author assumes that because she is in a relationship with Aang, Katara would drop her whole personality. What? Katara would not and could not be forced to do something or conform to some label and Aang wouldn't let it get to that point either. He would squash any idea that she is just "The Avatar's wife" or "The mother of the Avatar's children" the minute he heard it.

Seven: [comparing Katara's reaction to Aang The Desert to Aang's reaction to Katara in The Southern Raiders] "You'll spend a long time looking for her condescending tones. "Anger won't help, Aang," Katara never said, because she got that he was processing something painful and needed to sort it out himself. This difference in behavior is something that would be really fitting for a twelve year old boy to learn and understand. There's just no indication that he ever did."

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I don't remember Aang being condescending towards Katara. He was offering his advice because he knew her and knew that she would regret doing what she thought was right when her judgement was clouded by anger. And guess what. He was right. He never forced anything on her, either. Sure, he was a bit more pushy than he could've been, but in the end he let her go on the trip with no complaints. He even agreed that this was something she had to do.

Eighth: [referencing The Ember Island Players] "When the actor says 'Wait! I thought you were the Avatar's girl', Aang agrees. Katara is his."

You know damn well Aang doesn't see Katara as just his. And she's give him PLENTY of reason to believe that his feelings are reciprocated (which they are).

Ninth: "It's the story of a woman who swallows everything lest the man she's interested in has to learn anything about his behavior that violates her boundaries."

Ha! You said she was interested in him.

But in all seriousness, you mentioned how Katara stood her ground and told Aang that she was confused, but apparently now she's swallowing her feeings.

Tenth: [talks about the cloud babies daddy issues]

I don't disagree with what is said here, for the most part, but I don't think it is a reflection on Aang and Katara's relationship.

Eleventh: "... given what what we got with Kataang, it's completely unsurprising that Aang and Katara's parenthood/adult life was defined by a lack of communication and availability, at least from what we can tell. This also puts Katara's choice to immediately moved to the South Pole once Aang died in perspective; perhaps the city he poured all his energy into, at the cost of his family, held some bitter memories."

Once again with the lack communication. We can't use the early years of their relationship to determine their whole relationship. Also, there wasn't consistently a lack of communication, you just pointed out one time and ran with it.

We don't know at what point Katara moved back to the South Pole, but there are plenty of reasons for Katara to leave Air Temple Island:

a) Her son moving in/or planning to move in with his family.

b) She was no longer needed in the city and thus had no need to stay.

c) She wanted to go back to her native home for comfort after the love of her life died at a relatively early age.

d) The next Avatar was discovered and she came home to train them.

- There were some things in the article that I did not include for the fear of this becoming a novel of me repeating myself.

Alright. I am beating a dead horse here but taking time off of this show and fandom did not work. This will be the last time I ever say something about it but it’s upsetting to me so I need to vent. And to everyone saying “You are an adult man and this is fiction, why are you so obsessed? Weirdo. Learn to differentiate between fiction and reality.” I am going to address these notions as well as other problems I am having here. But really, Inuyasha was one of my first Anime, I have many dear memories and especially Rin was one of my all time favourite characters. Seeing her being mistreated like this upsets me. Ofc it does because if you watch something in formative years it’s not just fiction like a boring sitcom you watch now. Shows and characters are important to people and to simply dismiss it like that even if they would have been equally upset if it wouldnt have become canon, is infuriating. Really this is just therapeutic for me because even after weeks it’s still so baffling to me. Also please excuse the grammar and spelling mistakes. I am not a native speaker.

So the problem is obviously Sessrin and how it’s done because while I absolutely dont agree with this pairing, it would have been fine if it wasnt like it is. 

In the original show, Rin is an 8 yo child and her entire character reflects just that. She behaves like a child and depends on others. She has also been traumatized, doesnt speak at the beginning of the show and dies twice. Both times she is saved by or because of Sesshomaru. In many ways, while she has survival skills on her own, she depends on his presence alone to keep danger away. He also leaves her with trustworthy humans at the end but stays in her life as a protector. Now I like the original dynamic. It’s sweet, innocent and both characters grow because of it. Rin can work through her traumatic experiences, learns to trust others and Sesshomaru becomes a better person.  What happens afterwards only happens offscreen right until Rin gives birth to his children at the crippling old age of 15. 15. My lil sis is 16 now and couldnt consent to something like that. And she is mature af. It’s ridiculous. My blood boils just typing that shit out. And if you give me the ‘it’s legal in Japan’ excuse. In Germany a 14 yo can be with a 20 yo sexually. Still not okay in societies eyes and on tv it’s never shown as something positive. It’s even explicitly forbidden for authority figures like teachers or protectors to be with their protégé before the age of 18 because the chances of even unintentional grooming are too high. 

Now lets take a quick break and discuss how this kind of relationship usually plays out in other fictional pieces. A minor with an adult is something that is being portrayed at times and I dont have a problem with that. The problem is how it’s being done in Yashahime. And I dont mean the nonexisting character development but the fact that even in adult fiction this type of relationship isnt depicted positively. And this show is for young adults and teens that will exist way after all the discourse as the official sequel to Inuyasha. A cult anime. Meaning that in the future young people will watch it. Just like many still watch Inuyasha to this day. It’s on Netflix for fucks sake. Just to preface what comes next.   Some people say, “But cant you differentiate between reality and fiction?!?!?!” Adults can but younger people havent developed this ability to the same extent.   What happened to Rin was statutory r*pe in the USA, illegal even in Germany and should have been depicted as such unless the showrunners and fandom are okay with watching it without criticism or deconstruction. At best it was done with the intention to please the fanbase but really it’s neglectful to anyother part of the present and future audience. Not even most Animes do that. And I get that Sessriners arent into that shit in real life and an adult show could have gone this route because the viewers understand and add the criticism in their heads. Not ideal but whatever to me. But a YA show to go this route is so wrong on so many levels. The younger viewer who will watch this show in the following years might subconsciously internalize that this is acceptable under certain conditions when it’s not criticized properly on the show. That lowers their alertness when an adult actually starts to groom them. How dense do you have to be to assume that the lack of criticism on this YA show is a good thing?? Not everyone who will ever watch this show is an adult or capable of the same reasoning.

But another thing: for the same reason r*pe isnt depicted in a positive light, these types of relationships arent either. Because it’s not a positive thing and most people and showrunners dont want to see or create it as positive. Even in adult fiction, even in other anime, the media critizes and deconstructs what it’s showing because normally the showmakers dont approve but show it for realisitc or dramatic reasons. the same sessrin storyline would fit a fucking horror or thriller series. Just change the music and show it all. No showmakers in their right mind would go “Aye we got a r*pe scene coming up, lets put romantic music and have a pink filter over it.” “But it’s a different time and culture!” People will say and I agree but to have the audacity to assume that back then it was okay or that in todays Japan it’s okay, is fucked up. Think about it for a second. That’s so fucked up to think. Even if the society back then or in Japan thinks it’s okay, does it make it okay? 15 yo girls werent able to consent to adults and bear their children back then. They had to. They were raised with the expectations and they simply grew up thinking that it was the normal thing. But that doesnt make it right. That’s just societal grooming which did not prepare them in any way or allowed them the human dignity that they would have deserved. To now act like it’s all cool to just show the “positive” aspects or to twist it into something positive is so fucked up. Child Brides are a fucked up concept and to portray it as anything else is fucked up and also undermines the experience many girls still have to make. period.

I heard people say that it’s okay to portray it in this way because “Sesshomaru is not human!!!1″ and that’s correct. He is not. BUT, it’s not about being human but about maturity, consens, and independency. Him being a yokai makes it worse imo because there is an obvious power discrepancy. But in this particular fiction a good relationship could have been established (Kagome and Inuyasha for example) on those foundations but they did not because I can only assume they wanted Sesshomaru to smash and the show to pick up at a point where the other characters arent too old to be cool.

“What’s with Sango and Miroku, Kagome and Inuyasha?? It’s the same!” No it’s not. Rin was 8 at the beginning of the show. Kagome was 15 and Sango was 16-17 when they met their significant others. If you now tell me that you think 8 to be comparable to 15-17, I must ask you to get a reality check. Kagome’s and Sango’s relationships were slowburns starting when they already were able to have sexual and romantical feelings. Rin was a child. And Kagome did not kiss Inuyasha until they knew each other for a long ass period of time and bonded as friends and maybe more. Sesshomaru and Rin never were friends in the same way that Kagome and Inuyasha were because the maturity levels are way off. No adult is friends with a little child in the same way they are friends with their adult friends. And normally you dont grow into such a friendship but in the rare case you do, it’s not when she is 15 but maybe 20 or 25. 

Last but not least, Rin is not a character to the audience the same way Kagome or Sango are. Why? Because she was never shown as an adult or 3 Dimensional character to the audience. We know her as a child who wants to be with her trusted group. She is naive, but tough and doesnt have any motivation or drive on her own outside her group. Like every child she clung to the adults around her and her world outside of this group was nonexisting. Kagome wanted to be successful in school, Sango was a demon hunter and wanted to find her brother. Those are motivations and traits that dont circle around the love interest. Rin never had those because she was not developed to that point. Because she was a child and her entire existence was to develop Sesshomaru and to perhaps give the viewer a character to simply adore. What we see is of her: Mistreated child, -> Dead child -> Child being looked after and healing, -> Child not being homeless anymore -> ????? -> Teenager getting knocked up, pumping out main characters and then getting yeeted into a tree. 

This is not the way you treat a beloved character. There is no dignity to her character. “But she is fictional!!1″ Yes she is. But please show me a show that treats its child characters like this without criticizing it. 

I would have loved to see her grow as her own person. Go on her own adventures or learning a craft or developing meaningful bonds with other characters her age. Forming ideas that dont revolve around Sesshomaru alone. You know her being 3 Dimentional and not just there to pump out main characters. And if she then with 20 or 25 met Sesshomaru again and thought he was the hottest shit, I would have been fine with it. Not happy but fine. But in the little time we saw her as ‘not a child’, she still behaved the way she did before.

Fruits Basket, SE02, Ep25 (Season Finale)

ah~ I finished furuba’s Season 2..T_T.. now my life is empty..that’s a good ep!

- A moment with yuki:

I think there’s sth I still don’t understand abt yuki’s tohru-mom feelings...I thought that yuki after acknowledging such feelings, will slowly build a healthier, more equal relationship with tohru  & the only reason he didn’t tell her is cuz he wants her to be ready & not worry. So today, it makes sense that he comes & tells tohru he stood up for himself & was scared but made it! he’s proud of himself & tohru should be proud of him, too. Also, it helps tohru let go of worrying abt him & realize his growth. All amazing!!! However, the scene was depicted in a way that screams, “look mommy, I’ did it!” rather than a friend reaching out & proudly telling a friend. it really cemented the mom-son dynamics. I felt “awe look at him proudly telling his mom” sth I thought, we’ll be slowly moving away from towards more equal dynamics. Yuki was drawn extra thin & he was leaning as if he was waiting for a head pat. Nothing is wrong with yuki wanting motherly feels since he never got one but i felt nothing changed between them. yuki still below tohru. I mean he’ll never be able to repay her kindness. true. but I thought the story will let us see him standing taller bit by bit, y’know? I know he still calls her honda-san & perhaps him finally calling her “tohru” is when they’re equal..but shouldn’t he move slowly towards that? rather than suddenly coming & thanking her for being his much needed mother figure? why is this scene depicted with extremely strong mother-son feel? could it be cuz yuki is still putting tohru in a pedestal? he told momiji “did u do sth worthy of honda-san’s praise” as if tohru isn’t the person who praises momiji for a cute uniform or kyo for making a standard riceball. hmm, maybe yuki can’t be equal to her if he still sees her as the sky or an angel or someone who desperately needs protection. tohru is precious to him & he’ll protect her with his life, but I thought he’ll do so as a friend, not as a son. Maybe SE03 is abt him learning to see tohru as a normal, lacking but still amazing person? I’d love to see that!!

- Shigure ( the main character ):

It’s always forgotten that this goofy, good for nuthin dude is a main character. But once he turns dark & reveals his face, no doubt that this guy is the plot’s leader! Shigure doesn't do lengthy inner monologues, nor his actions are easy to read. Mayuko is right “ he is like a ripple in the water” .The stages of shigues’s emotions:

Bitter: “why not let yuki take responsibility & tend for akito?” mocking akito’s bedridden status over yuki’s defiance. “ why u ask abt tohru in the phone?” & proceeds to mock kureno for calling. Tohru would never answer the phone first. “ you’re featherbrained” cruelly mocking him using a pun on his zodiac while suspecting he isn’t one anymore. Only shigure is capable of such salt!

Silent Anger: looking at akito as she rants abt him not coming to her first! not choosing her first. while she’s the one who didn’t choose him. “you’re one to talk” Epic!! “ what do you want from her?” shigure had no right intruding on kureno’s business with tohru. but he’s too angry to behave. Kureno answers like a good boy.

Refusing to play blind: hatori looking for excuses for akito’s behavior within the curse’s lore. Shigure fires back with “haven’t u ever felt sth off with kureno?”. They all did. “ Ah~at long at last” not even waiting for kureno to say first.

Sticking his finger in open wounds: “don’t accept it?scared? sad? emotionally attached to the bond?” Verdict: “devious” he’s calling out  hatori & kureno both!

Embracing himself with no regrets: “ weak, intolerant, worthless, worst kind of man”. He embodies his own description of himself as he talks to kureno over the phone & sends tohru. “ see you later” only the worst kind of man uses tohru like that. sending her with no clue to an emotional shock. He wants the situation to escalates. He’ll use tohru if he have to. Let’s see if kureno’s “kindness” spares tohru the pain or if it tears her heart apart as it has been tearing everybody, kureno induced!

-Akito’s manipulating tactics start to backfire:

“ I speak cruelly of you, You know I don’t say it out of spite” very typical sentence abusers say to further their grasp around others. Insult them cruelly, then play the kind apologetic card. It makes the other person linger longer. “X didn’t meant it. X actually cares. X just lost control”. It happens in domestic abuse cases all the time.. it never changes..it never stops. Akito knows when she’s loosing her grip on someone. she feels it. Her ego doesnt let her acknowledge it. However, seeing akito’s innocent young self humanized her so much. She wasn’t despicable since birth as we’ve seen in yuki’s flashback, but here she was even more innocent than with yuki. Could it be cuz it’s from kureno’s perspective? someone older than her? or she treated older male zodiacs differently. Akito knew kureno’s curse broke as he himself did. hmm. it’s the bond, so the ruler does have a connection with the zodiacs. Akito fearing kureno’s abandonment is understandable. Akito using tears, screams, pleads & frantic behavior, “so typical of spoiled children” to get kureno to stay. It is a working tactic. A tactic that abusive adults use in toxic relationships so much & works to trap the other party to stay. Stay with me cuz you pity me, yes, but I’m the one on control. Keeping in mind akito’s age here, she looks 6? 10 maximum! is really twisted. Akito learned early one that manipulation works. She gets what she wants by playing games, whether it’s tears, pity, rage, ridicule, mockery, bets, humiliation, or sexual seduction. It reinforces her behavior that nothing can stand between her & her desires. curse or no curse. If she can keep a  non-cursed person, then the cursed ones are way weaker to leave. This, off course doesn’t justify her abusive behavior with yuki/ kyo/ momiji/ kisa/ rin/ haru/ hatori but today, we got a small window open into her psyche. The best “antagonist” is someone with irrational behavior that stems from twisted mindset! She is so interesting!

-Kureno & ( the most destructive foolish traveler):

So, kureno stayed with akito cuz he can’t turn a sad, lonely, fragile child away. Can’t bear to break her heart. The child became a woman. The woman needed him in bed, he can’t turn a sad lonely woman away. He gave in & their relationship became even more twisted with the complexity of intimacy issues. Kureno said “ arisa is the first person he ever loved on his own”. meaning that he slept with akito using the remaining feelings of attachment of his previous bond. EXACTLY as shigure said while questioning hatori’s refusal to believe the curse can break“ emotionally attached to the bond”. He continued this unbalanced sexual affair with her. completely submissive to her moods & whims. Unbalanced relationship cuz both stayed together for twisted reasons “unable to let go”, She has control over him since she’s the family head, over even his freedom outside the house, He is willingly submissive to her, choosing to not seek his happiness,  not standing up & denying her, or stopping her or telling her sth as simple as “ i want to go out to the supermarket”. content & satisfied with his dull, lifeless life. Until akito “ the sad child/ the sad woman doesn’t need him anymore??? but kureno can see that him staying by akito’s side didn’t do shit to improve anybody’s situation!!! Akito is still miserable! even before tohru appears in their lives. all the zodiacs were miserable & united in a toxic fake bond. The bond is so fake that all this time there was a fake imposter & no one dared to question. They’re so accustomed to submissive obedience that they don’t dare to hope. Only shigure. The intolerant jerk saw through it all.

-Kureno is a different kind of foolish traveler. He helped no one. Not even the person he gave his eyes to, Akito didn’t benefit from his kindness. He didn’t benefit, nor arisa, nor any zodiac. What kureno’s kindness brought him is misery. What it brought the sohma’s is enabling abuse & continuation of current toxic atmosphere. He is a more sever enabler than hatori. Hatori enabled the continuation of the curse by erasing memories & staying by akito’s bed tending for her with no life of his own. But hatori knows he’s a sinner & hatori is still chained by the bond. Kureno is free to leave. Yet, he’s still here deceiving everybody & suffering alone while pretending to be content with fake smile. Was Kureno raised to always follow orders? No personality. No needs. Still, he decides to continue even after given a chance to leave now!!!! he lost the first chance due to a promise he made while he was afraid, lonely & felt pity. Now, he knows someone there loves him (arisa), he has a new friend (tohru), someone flat out told him to freakin leave (shigure). Still, he feels that causing akito to break down & cry is cruel. The most passive character in the shows I’ve watched!! Kuteno is another proof of this brilliant writer! there are many kureno’s around us. hurting themselves & others by staying in the cycle of abuse. The writer is really brilliant for writing such variety of characters. Who cares if fans find him appealing or not? hot or dull? good or bad? that’s not the issue here. He fits the plot so amazingly & realistically represents real life ppl who are caught between causing immense harm & being severely harmed, between helping & ruining! Kureno just closed his own caged tight shut behind him. so foolish, so tragic!

Side Notes:

Momiji pulling tohru to his level to tell her abt his achievement is cute! I was told he’s supposed to be taller than tohru now! can’t wait to see that!

Momiji’s been dressing more mature for a while, such as the violin ep, ep24 & now. All three tops while still having so much decorations, a hint of feminine designs are still in tune with momiji’s funky spirit! Also they are NOT toddler-like clothes! at all. I’m convinced it is done on purpose!! baby is growing!

I love dark shigure!! OMG! the story take a whole other level once he turns dark & turns off the goofy mode, activating the bitter mode! He was raw with no mercy & unveiled hatori’s hidden feelings with no hesitation. He tore kureno like a vicious dog! I LOVE.

Akito’s Japaneses VA is queen! & shigure’s Japaneses VA is so amazing!! can’t wait for his American VA!!! he’s one of my faves!

the bond breaking visuals are perfect! 10/10. No words needed.

tohru does have a women’s intuition! She is the most emotionally intelligent & socially perceptive character in furuba, just as long as it’s not abt herself. XD

The scene of kureno & akito’s innocent childhood & the curse lifting being cut & inserted all over the ep is EPIC!! 10/10 presentation. It gave the ep eerie & distorted feel. Exactly as both kureno & akito felt. 

The scenes of tohru realizing sth is off with kureno’s curse is 10/10.

“ how did the curse break?” tohru’s first question! wow! I thought it was good for you, I’m happy, then ask afterwards. But NO. Interesting!!!!

i have some feelings about how people treat age (i am thirty for complete transparency) and its ~nuanced~ but not really as nuanced as people think it is? these are my perspectives as a 30 year old survivor and educator. this is kind of rambly and doesnt have a conclusion, i just wanted to get it out of my head.

lets talk maturity like adults, especially those over the age of 21, have enough experience to know that their feelings and mindsets are vastly different than that of someone who is 15, 16, or even 17 or 18. i still remember what it felt like to be 12, i still remember what it felt like to be 15, and i still remember what it felt like to be 17, 20, 25...and honestly i wouldnt go back lmao. im MUCH more mature today than i was then.

the older you are the more life experience you have to know what is and isnt right. you learn how to deal with people simply because youve had more time to do so. in that sense, the older an adult is, the more of an ‘edge’ theyre going to have over a minor. so you can never have an equal relationship because you just know too much. 

on the other hand, i think theres this stigma against older people that goes beyond looking out for childrens well beings and goes right into ageism. i have this theory that most people have no idea what a 30 year old is supposed to look like. most people assume im in my early 20s for a bunch of reasons...either its my looks or my interests or whatever but i think there is this narrative that someone over the age of 30 must be married, popping out children, buying a house, working on their career, and definitely not doing silly things on the internet. 30 year olds are ‘serious.’ ‘mature.’ something that simply does not apply to me as a personality trait, but because time has passed i have to BECOME another person....i dont get that.

in my professional life i have a lot of contact with teenagers. i talk to my teenage students like theyre adults because i dont think theyre idiots. i feel like a lot of my colleagues tend to treat teens like zoo animals rather than taking their jobs seriously. educators are part of a childs education process. we help form who you are, whether we like it or not, so giving you age appropriate responsibilities (within reason, i also hate assigning lots of busywork homework) is part of our job. teens say dumb things because theyre teens but also i remember that once i had a fucking meltdown in english class when i was 14 because i got a B+ on a quiz and said i was going to work at burger king forever and my teacher actually reassured me in her own comedic way. so yeah, i remember being overdramatic and annoying too so i cant be critical of my students for that.

while i think the age dynamic between a teenager and an adult is something to take more seriously than some people online would like to, i also see a lot of full grown adults in their early 20s pretending that anyone over 30 is a corpse. it goes back to what i said about that narrative....30 is not the end of your life. in fact, i felt my life was just beginning once i turned 30. i spent most of my 20s in and out of mental hospitals and in treatment, learning how to function, and towards my late 20s i finally became a teacher and found that it was a fundamentally vital part of my recovery. but the ‘best years of my life’ aka my teen years and early 20s were all spent trapped in abusive relationships and processing trauma. now that im older, i feel i can finally start living.

maybe its because of my experiences but i really resent being told that im old just because im 30. im only five years older than some of these people who are like ‘dni if youre 30+!’.... like you are 25 years old there is no significant age gap or power differential between us??? do you think that once you turn 30 you stop liking anime and become some kind of sexually predatory liability towards....people in their mid to late 20s? 

the reason we talk about age is because adults, all adults, need to respect children and teens at their particular stage of development. i know teenagers hate being told theyre not fully mature yet but you arent fully mature yet. you arent adults. even if you were, you simply dont have that much life experience. its fine not to know everything. and there are people who know more than you who will try to use what they know against you. thats why discussion age dynamics is so important. because childhood developmental stages are a thing really even up until youre in your early 20s (but at that point it doesnt matter AS MUCH because once youre legally an adult you have more legal rights than you do as a child, as sad as that is).

i think a lot of this antagonism against people over 30 is that society generally values youth, which is pretty silly because society also gives children and teens little to no legal recourse. so there is this distinct antagonism there. youth is valuable perhaps BECAUSE of its capacity for exploitation. once youre older, you know better, and thus you cannot be so easily fooled. and thus, as a result, we all believe turning 30 means youre a dried up useless husk, because your buying power isnt as useful. your beauty (if you are a woman) is worthless because only barely legal teens are acceptable in a society that highly values youth....and we should maybe unpack that because thats highly uncomfortable isnt it? your reproductive capacity is worthless because biased scientists have told us that if you have a child over 40 you are GUARANTEED to produce DEFECTIVE CHILDREN!!!! its backed up by SCIENCE!!!! science says older women are useless and shouldnt have children!! even though we live in a world where genetic counseling exists and we can easily navigate those risks...but no, science says. 

the cult of youth is a cult of exploitation of the youth and one that devalues to the point of disposability of older people. and during the pandemic we are really starting to see just how little governments care about older people. in fact, its almost as if they are purposely killing them off...because they arent as important as the youth for some of the above mentioned reasons.

hey leo, this is totally off-topic but I have this chemistry teacher and I think he is interested in me. He always stares at me when we work on our own and he reacts to the littlest things I do and he always greets me entusiastically and uses me for experiment (always takes my hands). Once I told him that he acts kinda pushy towards me and he looked so hurt that I felt really bad and he started to get more distanced and asks me for consent for everything he doesnt act like that with the others:(

I dont typically get asks like this, and this is a particularly touchy subject, but I think it's probably something that should be addressed, although I dont recommend looking to me as an authority of these topics. Considering it's chemistry and you call him a teacher, I'm assuming you're in high school or some form of pre-collage program, which most likely means you're underage (for reference I learned Chemistry at age 14, or 9th grade). Even say you're just reaching the peak if entering adulthood at 18, I certainly wouldn't recommend pursuing some form of relationship with someone you consider an authority, and this is for several reasons. Studies already exist showcasing a lack of development in the prefrontal cortex (I.E. the risk-judgement part of the brain) and a gap between the psychological maturity of a parson and their impulse control. And this lack of development continues well into the 20s.

Another reason I go against this is because on a personal basis, you arent equal. They have a substantial foothold over you that debalances the power dynamic that should in all due considerations be equal in a relationship.

So, personally, I wouldn't agree with the situation you're in. But I also have no control over you. I can only give you my thoughts on the matter as you've brought them to my attention. Given that, like i said, dont consider my word to be the foundational premise for which you should base all your judgements, since i dont really know everything about the situation, or even about the subject I attest to haha.

Raised since the age of 5 on a monster infested island, Xantunsia has seen her fair share of death In fact, it seems to follow her and she had to come to terms with that a bit younger than most do.

Life didn’t get much easier after escaping that cursed place, but pushing through all the pain and loss, she buries herself in training to cope with her trauma and protect what she cares about, which just happens to be the world at times.

The young miqo’te has no memories before her airship crash that sentenced her to six years on that hellish land. With vicious Monsters she hasn't seen the equal of even in her current age roaming in hoards and her only allies being children as young as four, she learned to steel herself in the face of the death of allies. Or she tried rather, but each one was a dagger in the softhearted mewling. What she really learned was to cope with the pain of it. Besides the children, she did also have Leader, the only fully grown survivor on the island. Though he was cold and pragmatic, his instruction generally kept the most people safe. That was until the Calamity struck. In the wake of the Monsters rampaging about at that time, Leader was lost and Xantunsia took his place. She managed to even lead the few surviving children off the island and live a half decade with her modest little clan. But the specter of death would take that from her too, she would even argue she tore it apart with her own hands. It was in that state she would leave the wilds and arrive in civilization for the first time, if you can call Limsa Lominsa such a thing.

I am okay with some mature content in RP, Xantunsia is a generally happy, even silly character despite her past but with major themes of ptsd and coping with death, she can fit well into most darker themes. Sexual themes however, she doesnt fit well with. Generally her experience with the darkness of the world is of a more forward brutal nature and she has no experience with such things. She doesnt even actually know where babies come from and assumes they all come from airship crashes. At most she can get into humorous moments where she doesnt understand when something sexual is attempted to be explained to her. I decided to keep her perpetually unaware of such topics mostly just because I find it funnier that way, but it does take serious situations involving sexual themes off the table.

On Alistair and Play

I have been making a really solid attempt at keeping my nose out of drama, and in all fairness, I haven’t had a lot of time to get caught up in the most recent distressing comments about our beloved Alistair. However, the commentary on twitter flew all over me for a lot of different reasons that I don’t feel comfortable staying quiet about.

For those of you who are not followers of former DA Lead writer David Gaider, he recently tweeted about how he is surprised that Alistair was not in a list of “worse dates” because he is a “manchild” who would be more interested in his Lego collection than his partner.

Other comments in response to Gaider were a mixture of people talking about how he is too boyish and immature to be a good partner and how his “baby talk” conversations just turned off the romance.

And OK, cool! If Alistair is not your cup ‘o’ tea, that is perfectly fine. There are plenty of us out here who love and admire him for the wonderful goofball he is. However this line of thought and the language used to describe him is incredibly toxic and the whole reason so many grown adults are emotionally stunted.

Play is an incredibly important activity for all living creatures. It is a way to relieve stress and it is a way to learn and grow. Human beings, both young and old, benefit from having fun. The ability to maintain youthful wonderment in the face of adversity is a positive feature for a friend, lover, parent, etc. In mental health we call this self-care or recreation or whatever works to encourage people to do it because it is GOOD FOR YOU and it helps you have the emotional and mental capacity to help others as well.

Additionally, humor is considered a higher order defense mechanism, and the ability to laugh and cut up when the world is falling apart is a strength. One of my favorite psychologists I work with always says, “When you are looking for a partner, make sure that you find someone who can make you laugh, even when you are angry at them. Find someone who helps you have fun and appreciate the imperfection that is a relationship”.

Seriousness DOES NOT equal maturity. It simply doesn’t. The world is hard and cold and mean. People who can hang on to any of the positive parts of youth for as long as they can are lucky and admirable. We need to stop associating maturity with stress and stoicism.

And while we are on the topic, we need to stop treating immaturity as an inherently negative quality. In Dragon Age Origins, Alistair is 20 years old. By developmental standards he is still maturing physically, mentally and emotionally. Then he gets saddled with the loss of the only family he really knows, saving the world, and potentially being king. Sure, he’s goofy, but he also knows when to turn it off and be serious. Personally, I think he is doing great.

If maturity mandates that I be serious all the time, I want no part of it. You can find me in the corner playing Legos with Ali.

Actually, it was Katsuragi who bought the house he now lives in and the rooms/design is to his own taste, so he likes it. I don’t think it’s old, it’s just a traditional Japanese house and it’s the first time Katsuragi lives on his own in a house he chose, so it’s pretty important to him imho And Akihito actually likes traditional Japanese architecture more than the main mansion - that’s why he was always thinking of coming back to Kamakura. And he would like a life as a commoner. (it’s Katsuragi who is more spoiled and used for more comfort - Akihito is like yay economy class is the best thing ever, so many people to talk to, while Katsuragi is like I’ll never travel in economy class again if I can help it)

But I think that until Naoya reaches 20 (or an appropriate age to inherit the title and position), Akihito will keep living in the Kuze mansion - and they will visit each other. Katsuragi can’t live in the Kuze mansion without being seen as a servant and Akihito has a son and future family head to raise. Them living separately is what makes them equal. 

Do you mean the panel where Akihito’s already sitting? He’s stunned by Katsuragi’s expression. The morning after scene is just Akihito talking about “what do we do about breakfast? should i go buy something?” and then K says to cut his hair.

I’m angry…how could Katsuragi even not read the letters?! Probably they were so naive and “i miss you so much” that to read one of ten is enough?))

hahahahaha He read plenty of them - Akihito literally wrote a letter a day - and because of the distance, he would receive many of them at once. And Akihito was describing everything he did, everything he saw and everything he learned, so Katsuragi would also benefit from his experiences abroad. The letters were pretty detailed.

I agree about Katsuragi wanted to be acknowledged by his brothers, but since he has Akihito by his side he starts looking much more self confident than before. When he was alone againts the whole world. Now he looks more calm.

I see it a bit differently (but it’s just my own interpretation), because at first being with Akihito made Katsuragi feel useless and he was lost more than ever, because he was overwhelmed by his feelings (not just romantic) and didn’t know how to handle them. And Akihito was suddenly mature and moving forward without Katsuragi (and Katsuragi suffers with inferiority complex) and he was a mess for a long time, actually. What ultimately saved him was the spinning factory. There he met the manager who gave him the confidence to stand in the light and not be in anyone’s shadow.

But I agree than in a long run, Akihito changed Katsuragi’s life for better.

About the Kanemoto company, Katsuragi bought it? So be became the owner and the president of it? Or it belongs to Isidzaki and Katsuragi is just a president (read as hired worker)? Than why he abandoned the opportunity to stay the Kuze financial manager as he was?

This was another thing I was confused about - and hence why it probably comes out confusing in my old summaries - there are two spinning factories - Kanemoto factory and Ishizaki factory.

Kanemoto factory belongs to Mr. and Mrs. Kanemoto, and Katsuragi clan (i.e. Takayuki) owned the most stocks - until Tomoyuki bought them as a revenge for Takayuki meeting with Akihito and stopped Takayuki in expanding his business. Now Kanemoto factory is shared between Katsuragi clan and Kuze.

Ishizaki factory belonged to Ishizaki and he appointed Katsuragi as a president and wanted him to fire people, because the factory didn’t really make money. But Katsuragi went against Ishizaki’s orders, told the workers how and what to improve, told them to offer education for all workers, including female workers and in a short while the company started to be real good. But then Ishizaki got angry and fired Katsuragi - from the head clerk and from the president position. And the workers went on strike and the stocks went down and stockholders started to sell them, so Katsuragi went to Takayuki to ask him to buy all the stocks for a very low price and then put Ishizaki spinning under Kanemoto spinning and they have a big spinning thing going on. And Tomoyuki is the president and he doesn’t work under anyone. Katsuragi clan (and Kuze, because they’re now connected) owns the biggest number of stocks and they’re the ones who are in charge because of that. The old Ishizaki spinning factory is now called Katsuragi spinning factory (because Takayuki decided :D).

Underrated Shoujo Gems You Should Try.

I love shoujo manga whole lot but it does sort of suffer from same series syndrome. Just like a lot of other fandoms, certain series just pop up a TON. For Shounens it tends to be Naruto, Bleach, Once Piece, and My Hero Academia. In Shoujo the list is usually Kamisama Hajimemashita, Kaichou wa Maid-sama, Fruits Basket, Ouran, Ao Haru Ride, Orange, Kimi ni Todoke, Akagami no Shirayuki-hime and so on... While these series aren’t bad and are quite good, I’m here to give you some wonderful series out side of the ultra popular range that deserve some love and attention.

Chikyuu no Owari wa Koi no Hajimari  (chapter 1 of 16 is translated)

Youve probably heard of Taamo’s more popular series Taiyou no Ie,  Chikyuu no Owari wa Koi no Hajimari follows twins as they learn about love.The protagonist Mahiru fancies herself to be unlucky at best which makes her a fun character to follow as she usually assumes the worst will happen but good things happen to her anyway. Its a fun series that encourages the reader to look on the bright side of life.

Colette wa Shinu Koto ni Shita (chapter 19 of 49 is translated)

Okay, I really don’t understand why this one hasn’t taken off, this is a 100% guilty pleasure read that is a retelling of Hades and Persephone (minus Persephone’s name and adding making her a human doctor). This series has the notable qualities of lacking a love triangle, lacking drama, and the side characters being fleshed out including servants, other gods, and other various memebers of the world. The author seems to just really enjoy her characters. (ALSO YOU SHOULD READ IT BECAUSE HADES IS HOT.)

Koiwazurai no Ellie   (chapter 1 of 19 is translated)

The story focuses on an anti-hero named Ellie. Ellie is crude and a bit of a perv that daydreams about the popular boy in class. The boys popular persona is quickly swept away to reveal hes a bit pessimistic. While Koiwazurai no Ellie bears a lot of resemblance to Black Prince and Wolf Girl, there is a far greater lack of petty drama and the characters are in balance unlike the perpetual power struggle in Black Prince and Wolf Girl. Ellies pervy side is relate-able and funny as the two get to know each other and he does nothing but fan the flames of her crude mental state.

Living no Matsunaga-san (chapter 4 of 6 is translated)

This up and coming series is sure to be the next popular shoujo with its gorgeous art and beautiful beshounens. It revolves around a girl who moves in to her uncles boarding house and quickly finds herself to be the only non-adult. She falls in love with the beautiful Matsunaga-san only after a couple choppy meetings. Her romance while focusing on Matsunaga-san also journeys through the other adults of the house as they all learn to work and live together.

Short Cake Cake (chapter 8 of 35 is translated)

Speaking of boarding houses Short Cake Cake is written by the author of Hibi Chouchou that revolues around Ten a country girl who makes 2, 2 hour commutes everyday to school. Her friends persuade her to take up living in a boarding house so she can be closer to the school. She quickly makes friends with the tenants and a new set of loves gets to blossom. This series has the reader asking “Who will she end up with?” No... seriously, I’m talking Hirunanka no Ryuusei levels of competition here (The author even references it a couple times.) So if you want a beautiful nail-biting romance that revolves  around two VERY ideal guys. This is your series.

Mairimashita, Senpai (Not translated has 10 chapters)

Do you think that modern Shoujos move too slow, are you longing for a fast paced series that gets right to the fluff (and semi-lemon stuff)? This series is about Serina who finds lyrics on her desk one day, after commenting on them she quickly meets the author and finds him to be... a jerk. This follows their growing relationship as they find strengths in each other giving two relatively shy people an opportunity so gain support and find themselves.

 Mizutama Honey Boy (Chapter 28 of 33 is translated)

Mizutama Honey Boy follows the espades of Fuji (a girly guy) and Sengoku (a manly girl) as they become friends, or well, friends that act like a dating couple but their still not official even though the feelings are mutual. This series is a fun romp in breaking the shoujo formula. Every character is delightfully opposite of what the shoujo formula says it should be ranging from common strip teases to gays to wrestling to 1970′s shoujo throwbacks this series has just about as much fun as Ouran in this convention breaking, pain causing, story avoiding series.

Niehime to Kemono no Ou (CHapter 18 of 30 is translated)

This series is another up and coming title that involes a human sacrafice that falls for the very person who by convention in supposed to kill / eat her. This is a series for the fans of Kamisama Hajimemashita. A love that is strengthened despite their different worlds. Join Saliphie as she fights literal monsters to be come a queen worthy of the king of beasts.

Queen's Quality /  QQ Sweeper (QQ Sweeper is fully translated, Volume 1 of Queens Quality will be out in September, no translations yet)

This series is one I’m honestly surprised nobody has caught onto. In a series that rivals shounen proportions Fumi is a girl who is living in the school as she has been kicked out of her last place of residence. She has long since lost her parents and is cursed to bring destruction to all who give her shelter. Kyuutaro is the school janitor (sort of) who finds her. Quickly she is rushed into the life of a sweeper, people who clean both the physical world and the spiritual world. (Also did I mention its the same author as Dengeki Daisy? Yeah this series gets pretty dark, a refreshing turn for a shoujo manga)

Sabaku no Harem (Chapter 21 of 22 is translated)

You hear about harem mangas all the time but what about a literal harem? Sabaku no Harem follows the tomboyish princess candidate Mishe who wins the heart of a prince as she literally walks past him. As the 30th concubine Mishe is set to face competition for a prince she really doesn’t care for and proceeds to sabatoge herself which natually makes the prince more curious. Sabaku no Harem is a series that is almost episodic in nature as the two gradually grow closer despite the many people who want to tear them apart.

Sensei Kunshu (Chapter 9 of 47 is translated)

This series stems from the author’s other, more popular work Heroine Shikkaku but one doesnt need to read her previous work to read this rioting series. The story follows Ayu who is constantly getting rejected by the person she confessed to. She quickly falls for her teacher as she has with others before but somehow the love becomes requited. Sensei Kunshu follows the insanity of Ayu and her teacher as they face the world together.

Suijin no Hanayome (Chapter 9 of 29 is translated)

The Bride of the Water God is a very popular Korean series but did you know there is a Japanese version? Suijin no Hanayome follows Asahi who is transported into an ancient realm (think Inuyasha in setting) where she is quite promptly given as a sacrifice to the water god of the area. The Water God being very bored and very done with humans keeps her a few days and then gives her back much to the horror of the towns people but not before he takes her voice. The story continues as Asahi changes from child into woman and the many trials of the new world she lives in.

Takane to Hana (Chapter 27 of 50 is translated)

A favorite of mine to talk about Takane to Hana opens with Hana who appears at a Mai (arranged marriage meeting) in place of her sister. She quickly refuses to deal with the arrogance of Takane the marriage partner and promptly leaves. This interests Takane and he pursues her. Hana has 0% time for his tom-foolery and sets out to make his life miserable which results in a comical battle of wits, pride, and abilities. This age gap manga takes the uneven maturity level of most age gaps and sets them on equal ground as they take turns sabotaging each other like 3 year olds. 

I hope you were able to find some titles I listed that look interesting or that you have never read before. While this is just the currently publishing list there are many more out there and I will post again soon! In the meantime, I hope this list gives some new reading material.

Caitlin’s Three Things List

Okay, so moments (probably hours by the time I finish this) ago I wrote a goals list that I think is good for self-evaluation. (Keyword: This is what I think. results may vary depending on what you’re looking for.)

I’m going to hop to it and answer some of these that I laid out in hopes of having a better idea of what I want to accomplish. 

The Three Things Lists!

1) Three things that went well this year.

* Audience growth

So once upon a time, I grew a pretty decent following due to creating an Inktober Prompt list. My expectations: Maybe two of my friends would do this, maybe. And then one stranger that has followed me for a while. (There are a few followers I recognize their username because if I post something they always like it and for some reason that keeps me going.)

But because of this prompt, I was exposed to MANY new creators and illustrators that I now enjoy chatting with and following! Instagram had the biggest maintained growth. I’m excited to create for an audience that actually expects me to create and not just for friends who see my things “whenever they aren’t busy”. (Not to bash them or anything, just there are a lot where unless I tell them, they don’t see the posts I make.)

Another surge of growth in my audience was due to tabling at conventions this year. I was terrified to show my work let alone attempt to sell it to someone. Tabling at cons not only boosted my confidence but also quieted one of my ever going demons. “YoU sUcK aT dRaWiNg CaItLiN.” “How do you have a degree? oh right, you just barely passed.” I can’t say this is the case, there is an audience that genuinely enjoys my scribbles. So I am forever thankful to Atlanta Comic Con for giving me that chance. It honestly opened a few doors for me.

**Process

I’ve gotten more comfortable with showing my process. It can be messy, crisp, and illogical. But turns out the people who enjoy my content enjoy my scrambled thoughts. It’s something about not being alone in this sort of sense that calms the nerves.

So I can say with chest poked out that sharing process has gotten MUCH better. I can thank a self-help book I bought this year that was a FANTASTIC BUY. Austin Kleon has [two] (currently? If he has more then I’m buying it like people buy a name brand.) books that helped me see that it is GREAT to share not only the process but advice. “Show Your Work” is the book I’m talking about for now. Great tips, the outline is on the back of the book. So if you’re like me, I need to clearly see what I might be getting into, you might have a ball.

And finally, (not calling myself out on this but other) If you’re going to respond to people when they ask you “how do you___?” do not answer “Google it”. That is the rudest thing I’ve seen some of even my FAVORITE illustrators do; that response can burn in hell. PERIODT. (my one typo allowed.)

*** Art Style Exploration

For those who think college will help you establish an art style that you’ll enjoy or help nourish the one you currently have.... Let me save you over 80K.... No, the fuck it won’t.

That was the biggest thought I had going into art school. If anything, it confused me more and utterly destroyed what little confidence I had in my drawing style. After graduating, I had a huge swing from how I used to draw to how my art currently looks. I stopped trying to please the one professor who stood between me and my degree and started drawing to please my tastes. And guess what? That did something. And that something WORKED. I love what I draw now; I see why I chose this as my career path. I’m genuinely happy with how my pieces turn out versus in college just wanting to turn the damn thing in and hoping it isn’t an F.

2) Three things you could have handled better.

* The loss of a good paying client.

Now hear me out when I say this: A good paying client DOES NOT EQUAL a good client. Say that three times and then exhale.

Back earlier this year, I had the opportunity to work with a writer who gave me hell and back. And even that is an understatement. I dealt with her because in school you were taught “if they pay on time, finish the work and get the exposure.” 

I’m here to tell you my lesson learned: A good paying client DOES NOT EQUAL good exposure, good pay, a good client. 

I was doing the work of three for the price of one and a half. (And was always told I charged too much.) She tried abusing this power with friends of mine, with other illustrators. When things turned out bad, she tried saying it was my fault. She read my contract and then tried telling me I changed the wording, I purposely did this thing, another thing was my fault. I could go on with this story.

The part that I wish I handled better?

How I treated myself afterward. I’m so used to people telling me, “Cait, this is what you do wrong. This is how you fix it.” that I don’t consider my own feelings, and when I bring my feelings into the scenario they no longer matter. Because they tell me they don’t matter. In this case, I wish I had treated me better, because my feelings, my mental health, DOES matter.

**My Patience Getting Into Conventions.

Pretty self-explanatory. I got into one, finished one, and wanted to do eight more in a week. But this sort of thing just takes time and I need to accept that.

***My losses

I had to listen to a Little Mix song to actually learn this one. The context of the song is nowhere near the topic at hand. But a verse from Power feat Stomzy really packs a punch after this year: 

“ You look him in the eye and say, "I know I'm not a guy But see there's power in my losses and there's power in my wins" “

I had to look one of my demons in the face, and state something similar. My loses mean I’m trying. My loses piling shows I’m not willing to give up easily, and that is something that took a while to be content with.

3) Three things artistically you want to improve on.

*Composition

It’s not awful, but it can be better.

**Color

I told this BOLDLY if I might add while critiquing someone else’s portfolio; “Your color palette is boring. All your [things] look as if they are from the same universe, during the same time of day, with the same kind of mood. After three photos it’s bland, boring, and understood you have a preference.” 

Can you say damn Cait? The statement was, in fact, true, but I certainly could not talk. My color palette is mainly bright, pop, and happy. In order to tell a story, I KNOW it is best told with color. And I failed myself this year. But I sure won’t next year.

***My Damn Tag

Okay, alright. Why is it well-established artists have their tag figured out? Even some who’s art style is so recognizable (I’m looking HEAVILY at you Gabriel Piccolo.) we know it’s theirs, seem to have a tag that suits them and works for them. But more importantly, they put it in A VERY DECENT SPOT. SOMEONE SHARE THIS SCIENCE WITH ME? CAUSE APPARENTLY I DON’T GET IT.

4) Three things you want to focus on trying.

*More backgrounds.

As much as it pains me, I need to improve on backgrounds and perspective. When I do make backgrounds, I’m told I make great pieces. That I should look into becoming a background artist. And don’t get me wrong, I like them. But I don’t like them.

I feel as though I need to improve in that region so that way I don’t feel as though it’s a weakness of mine. My backgrounds are nice, but they aren’t nice to my standards.

**More designs

I love character designs, but let’s be real. If you were to scroll down my site or my Instagram page, or even this Tumblr archive, could you tell? 

I draw characters a lot sure, but none are designs. No process, no sheets, no turnarounds, none of that. So that’s a huge goal of mine for 2019.

***Scheduling posting

At one point I was pretty good at this. Live stream in Instagram and Twitter, cool. Videos on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Cool. Everywhere gets a photo, everywhere gets a silly one-liner. Yay. I’m not leaving anything out.

Well by the end of this year that totally crumbled. 

SO I want to try getting better at that thing there. Because having attempted this at the end of the year was cool, but it still wasn’t enough apparently.

5) Three positive things to tell yourself.

* You are an inspiration. That’s all you wanted to be in life, you did it. I’m proud of you.

**You didn’t kill yourself like you tried to; you opened up about it for once and used that pint up anger creatively. That is very hard to do, trust. I’m proud of you.

***You moved on, matured, and let it go. Even when the goddess inside you told you these peasants didn’t deserve your light, your friendship, your greatness. I’m proud of you.

I’m just proud of me for not snapping when I had every right to; not everything deserves a reaction.

6) Three negative things you want to leave for 2018.

*Comparisons 

Oh boy. I am extremely guilty for this: I’ll compare myself to a well-known illustrator my age. I’ll compare myself to friends who are in the field having a blast and getting work; I’ll compare myself to friends who aren’t in the field and they struggle at getting work. I’ll compare myself to the kid I graduated high school with who is traveling the world, is able to eat, come home to his dog and relax because he doesn’t have tuition to pay. I’ll compare myself to these goddamn baby boomers who keep repeating “We didn’t have it hard, you’re just being stupid. Millennials aka our children deserve to starve. We’ll just put our faith in our grandchildren because screw the kids we raised and refuse to pay accordingly. $7 an hour worked in my day, they need to make it work now.” I’ll compare myself to fake people I created in my head and purposely made scenarios and wonder why I’m not like them, said creations I made because I was pretty low for ten minutes...

I just compare myself too much. To any damn body. It’s draining, obnoxious and most of all pointless. My new motto for next year is: “Unless it is helping you grow yourself, your brand, your spirituality, don’t do it.”

I’m not comparing my chapter two to someone’s chapter thirty-five. I’m not even comparing my chapter two to someone else’s chapter two. I need to stop doing that PERIOD! My journey is different, unique, and worth seeing through.

**Listening to negative others.

A couple of years ago, I lost a close friend around the time my aunt passed away. During this time I was hypersensitive to any and everything done or said; I also kept many walls up to hide my mourning. He caught the crossfire of all of that. I kept secrets from him I was too prideful of admitting and lashed out because of the emotional turmoil I kept suppressed. While in the midst of packing his things and leaving my life, he mentioned that I was a failure because I was unemployed and artistically speaking I hadn’t accomplished anything; that I would remain that way because that’s just the person I deserved to be. Now mind you, I graduated college that year; he was a flunk out. I changed my art style dramatically compared to when I started school to pass; he thought just posting crappy pictures of lukewarm sketches were equivalent. I started attempting trends and all he could do was copy. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t to bash my old friend. If he were to come back into my life and move on like nothing had happened I’d do the same. (With some limitations.)

It’s just while typing out this scenario, of our four-year friendship I can’t think of one nice thing/compliment/gesture he has said to me. That’s my problem.

I can be praised, admired, and look highly upon for years straight. But my problem is I let others negative thinking and comments marinate with me for a long while. Too long of a while.

Another example is my mother’s friend. (My mom has many friends that do this shit, but this one stung more.) 

This friend always roots for me; treats me like a person, and encourages my artistic journey. I consider her family before my actual relatives. 

We went over for some barbeque the family was having and I was ready. Black Hallmark Cookouts, laughing, good food, good music, shit talking others teams. She asked me a harmless question of when was I going to quit my day job. Seemed like nothing at first, until the added gest of what she continued with. “All I’m saying is you can’t do [your day job] forever. That will get old. If the art thing doesn’t work out next year what’s plan b?”

I’m not a calm person (usually). Normal Caitlin would have cursed her out and mentioned how just because she chose a job to settle and be miserable at for most of her life doesn’t mean I have to follow suit. But again, of all the nice encouraging things she has done, said, and showed, for a while, I couldn’t think of it. 

So I pray I let go of this nasty behavior in 2018; it’s going to be hard but it is dire.

***Saying I’m Not Enough

Alright, now put the combination of the two above in a bowl and what do you get? A Caitlin who struggles in interviews and applying for jobs because I let comparisons and negative comments rule my thoughts. This stopped me from applying to jobs I would have been perfect for; internships that could have helped me; posting art online.

We (including me) have to stop thinking that in order to be an illustrator means we have to pass a certain threshold of struggle, success, and a huge number of followers. That isn’t the job description. NO JOB DESCRIPTION has ”must have at least 10K followers on Instagram or Twitter.” nOnE. 

So we (including me) need to stop treating ourselves this way. Period.

7) Three things you’re looking forward to in 2019.

*Going to move conventions.

**Adding pieces to my portfolio to try again at job hunting.

***Becoming content with the fact that my current situation isn’t my permanent situation. Unless I laze around and make it so.

Alright, so this was basically me calling myself out on my noise. Lashing out my demons and putting it in writing what I want to accomplish. I hope this inspires you to write yours, even if you keep it private. I hope it guides you and maintains your vision.

i thought i’d give a little bit of a backround description to my ocs (well, at least publicly post about them for the first time ever) as well as a little bit of info for my story.

im kinda nervous making this post because i just hold this concept and characters VERY CLOSE to my heart. this is something i’ve been developing and working on since i was 12 years old, and i guess i can get a little over-protective of it.

i dont really trust anyone enough to tell my ideas to (mostly out of fear and unconfidence in myself) but i figured, its something i need to let out eventually, and this is probably the best format to do so. so here goes, i’ll post this under a read more

this is a very brief description of things, so there’s a lot that im leaving out, but i wanted to make this simplified anyway:

a little bit of info on the setting of my story; the story starts out in New York City. it takes place in the year 2085, in a dystopian-like future, 28 years after a mysterious alien-like creature, dubbed by the public as “lotus eaters” show up and leach onto humans, ultimately killing and possessing them as cannibalistic zombies. over time, humans have slowly learned to adapt with them, such as never going outside at night time (when they roam around) safeguarding their homes, etc. despite this, they still baffle scientists, such as their origins and behaviors. there’s also been a significant human population decline since their appearance.

from all of this, a small subculture of young, typically orphaned street gangs have emerged, with most of them living amongst the major cities. here’s a brief description and backround of one of these gangs and their members:

Marley: DOB: May 9th, 2068 (age 17)

Marley is the oldest and most rational of the group. she doesnt lose her temper nearly as much as the others, and shes almost always shown to have a very calm demeanor, talking with a very gentle voice. she always observes situations thoroughly before coming to a conclusion, which can be annoying to the others when they’re in a desperate situation and would rather act fast. however, this makes her a very logical person. despite this, deep down inside behind her calming nature, she can hold a deep rage that could be set off only in intense situations, like if her friends are getting severely hurt. this can cause her to be in an irrational state of violent hatred. Marley is the only one who goes out of her way to get an education. in her free time, she does homework, and she shows up at her local high school once a week to turn it all in.

fun facts: Marley has light brown, short hair that curls lightly around her face. shes asexual, and lacks having any sort of romantic feelings, only strong platonic feelings for her friends, who are like a family to her. her father was a well-known, respected scientist who hid her existence from the world in order to protect her from people who condemned him and his research.

Roxanne: DOB: July 12th, 2069 (age 16)

Roxanne is the most emotional and stubborn of the group. this causes her to act out very fast, and going into immediate “fight mode” when in battle. shes very brash and isint afraid to speak whats on her mind, no matter how obscene her thoughts may be. however, she cares deeply for her friends, and will do anything to protect any of them. she has a strong, protective, “motherly instinct” when it comes to them. shes terrified of the ones she loves abandoning her, due in part to the trauma caused from her mother dying when she was 7. she’s afraid of losing anyone else, so she latches on to the ones she cares about, but yet is afraid to get close with anyone new.

fun facts: Roxanne is half chinese, half european. she has noticeably long natural eyelashes. its implied a few times that shes bisexual. she does have an ex boyfriend, named Curtis, who she still cares for deeply. her red diamond necklace she wears around her neck belonged to her mother, who gave it to her before she died. it’s the only memento she has of her mom, and she wears it at all times in order to never forget her. she is especially fond of Rhapsody, whom she thinks of as if she were her daughter. shes extremely protective of her. her favorite food is flan.

Maggie: DOB: January 28th, 2070 (age 15)

Maggie has a rather rambunctious, yet wise-cracking personality. shes never afraid to lighten up the mood, or to point out the obvious in situations. despite this, she can become paranoid very easily, and often acts frantic and irrational when in such a state. she’s especially doting of May, her twin sister. her and May were in a severe house fire, which damaged half of her lower body below her neck. her and May were the only survivors. both their parents, older sister and younger brother were all killed. because of this, she thinks of May as her “other half” and would feel incomplete and empty as a person if she werent around.

fun facts: Maggie is the older twin of May, by one minute. after she joined the gang, she stylized her hair as a beehive, and dyed her naturally blonde hair blue. she covers up most of her burn scars with her clothes, however, her left hand is completely scarred and exposed.

May: DOB: January 28th, 2070 (age 15)

May is the complete opposite of her sister. she’s the kind of person that tries to avoid conflict as much as possible, and is not the leader type. she prefers to stay in the backround and observe others without taking on the action of responsibility. this is in due to her low self esteem and confidence she has in herself. despite how she feels of herself, shes very trustworthy to everyone, and is always there to protect one of her friends back. shes also noteworthy for somehow always being able to detect danger, such as if an arrow was being shot out of nowhere, she could move her, or anyone, out of harms way. due to the fire disaster she went through, her right side of her face is completely damaged, including her eye. although shes not completely blind, her vision in her right eye is very blurred. her appearance adds nothing but more fuel for her already low opinion of herself. she is also very doting on Maggie, for the same reasons.

Pico’s super comedic flirting attempts seem to come off like she’s completely aware that dolce doesnt love her back, and she just wants to make some humour out of the situation to let dolce know she still cares about her even if they’re never gonna date. Its nice, we dont often see relationships like that in fiction, a childhood friend who confess a crush, gets turned down, and it actually ends positively and they remain friends. Its just a shame it had to be like... one of the few openly LGBTQ characters in the game, and nobody is ever allowed to date anybody or have a happy ending or be a romance route or even mention the word gay, even as theyre constantly being incredibly vocal about how its canon these characters have crushes on each other. gahhhhh. I mean we literally have doug and dylas proposing to each other and confessing their love but LOL HA its just a ~wacky misunderstanding~ but btw lets just rub it in that they are VERY MUCH intended to be seen as gay by the audience but theyre not ~really~ gay even when we say they are and GAHHH okay sorry im getting offtopic now :P Anyway its really sad that Pico is stuck as the same unchanging ghost child while her best friend grows up and marries someone else. And man, she had to spend all those years guarding monster form dolce until someone was able to free her, and we dont even know how pico died so her life could have even more tragedy in it. After all that I guess its a relief that she can be this comic relief jerk-with-a-heart-of-gold manzai duo partner to dolce and also like the freeloading friend on her metahphorical ghost couch. And its nice how much the doctor couple completely accept ‘dolce’s friend’ and are some of the few people who never remotely worry about her haunting the town. And then AAAAA there’s the four guardians themselves who’re like a family cos they were all people who were like family to ventuswill in different time periods, and then met each other for the first time when they were purified from their monster forms and bonded over how much they all love the same friend. And theyre such a badass quartet of cool monsterfolks!! And I like that they have lil relationships inside the quartet, like how dolce and amber are polar opposite sunshine and grumpiness but dolce secretly likes her a lot more than she lets on, and how leon likes to tease dylas but also kinda be his wingman. And I like how leon takes this role to a lot of the other batchelors too, he’s this totally shameless frat boy big brother figure XD “HEY PROTAGONIST DO YOU WANNA HEAR ABOUT DOUG’S SEX LIFE” And then aaaa doug and granny blossom AAAAAA granny blossom is probably the character who gets the least scenes, backstory, and general focus, but I still love her a lot. And they have a good dynamic together! I like that it starts off seeming like just a completely normal grandma granson relationship, but then you learn later that he’s adopted, and that he actually began as a spy for the evil empire who realized the error of his ways after infiltrating the town and finding so much love inside it. And then he’s just so scared cos blossom’s illness might bring her to an early grave, and he’s always being disobedient and rebellious because he wants to do anything to protect her even if she tells him not to put himself at risk and AAAAAA

why are there so many amazing fams and theres even so many small hints of characters who maybe only interact once or twice and then there’s room to headcanon even more fams and AAAAAA and the protagonist’s place in the complex web of fams is up to you to decide!!
