UGH!!! I can accept a lot of opinions and different takes on the drama. I can even agree with them to some extent. But ONE thing I can never agree with is the HanYe slander. Because, what has this man actually done wrong?
This man is in pain and nobody is doing anything to get him out of his misery, and despite everything she’s done till now, this is where I draw the line with Anle. This is where I’m actually angry at her.
So, the man is a saint.
In fact, he takes it upon himself to right all the wrongs, even if it’s not something directly under him, like the flood case. Now, with respect to him bestowing a family jewel on the fake Ziyuan’s head and declaring her his Crown Princess in front of everyone despite no one on his side is all part of a promise he sworn to keep since he was a kid and has said repeatedly, since episode one, that he was gonna marry DiZiyuan. How can anyone be surprised he’s keeping that promise? And the only reason people are angry at him and are glad for his suffering now is because of something Anle herself (the real Ziyuan) did.
And one thing that actually has me gagging, as well as it did in the novel, is the fact that Cunning Minister and Anle are basically planning on letting him go through the marriage with an impostor, because it’s good for their plans. Like??? Excuse me, bitches??
And the situation in the drama is actually way, way worse, because the prince sees Luo as his friend. He’s being lied on both accounts, by the woman he loves and trusts and by his closest friend. And this psychopath Minister of a man (that is actually the one fueling even more Anle’s hate towards the Hans and her obsession for revenge) heard him said he was having doubts about fake Ziyuan and not wanting to marry the wrong person. And that freaking dying dude had the audacity of looking him dead in the eye and basically tell him to own up to his choices. WHAT THE FUCK?! Look, I just don’t hate ZIyuan. I don’t know if it’s Dilraba’s performance that I find more likeable than perphaps I should, or the fact that I find her vulnerable moments authentic enough for me to believe there’s a way back for her still, BUT I HATE Cunning Luo with a passion. Can he die already? I’m gonna be cheering.
This was my least favorite arc in the novel, in fact, I read it so fast I barely remember it (must be why I feel it’s longer), but thank goodness is about to end. The next part is actually my favorite bit besides the ending.
Well, on a fan level I’m actually loving Gong Jun in this. And I’m kind of surprised that this is one thing that lived up to my expectations. I look forward to see him suffer more in later eps!! lmao

I love your take on Crowley!
I know that the early, non-Diasomnia stories aren't really your thing, but are you reading the novels at all?
I have been following some of the fan translations and the second book seems intense! Would love to hear what you think about them.
thank you! 💚💚💚 I'm not really sure why you think I don't like the earlier arcs though, I love pretty much all the characters and their storis! (I think 5 and 1 are my favorite of the past episodes, though 6 infected me with the Shroud brainrot something fierce.) I just...ESPECIALLY love diasomnia. :') but there is room in my heart for all of these dweebs! like, who among us is not just as ride-or-die for Adeuce as they are for us.
that said, I don't really follow the other adaptations like the manga (aside from a dip-in just to see the new Yuus) or the novels, though I keep meaning to check them out! I do like seeing the differences between the different forms of media, and how certain things get adapted one way or another! but alas, time/a lack of accessibility stands in our way more often than not. :( someday...someday I will have time to consume all of the media...

i love how fraught and complicated discourse around various utena characters ‘dying’ is when anthy is literally stabbed to death eternally by a million swords imbued with human hatred. and then utena gets stabbed to death by them also. like. ‘death’ is incredibly interesting in rgu because most of the time it’s this ambiguous figurative thing that has interesting implications re: ohtori as a closed-off world one can escape. we are all trapped in our coffins. mamiya is the only named character with a grave. nemuro memorial hall functions as one all the same. ruka is implied to have died in the hospital— was he dead all along? who was the boy we saw for these two episodes? is this dead boy the same boy, or is this just another coincidence from the shadow girls, cutting like a knife? it’s heavily implied that akio and anthy murder kanae by poisoning her, adding to the previous implication that they were poisoning mr ohtori too, but there are no perceptible consequences of this. kanae’s absence is not felt. she’s fed an apple slice. what happens to the bodies? we know what happened to the 100 boys, but what about everyone else? and so on and so forth. ‘death’ is a tricky thing in utena, i think it’s constantly functioning on figurative and literal levels in very different ways for very different purposes. dios died. dios was dying. dios didn’t die. he grew up. etc etc

I don't like DDLC'S MC very much on a very petty level but I still wish there was more fic or meta speculation about him. I'm not interested in him as a character, though, because he's barely a character. Literally by the game's standards, he has no inherent "character file." He is the SCRIPT, if anything. All of his thoughts and actions occur within the little text bubble at the bottom of the screen, and so do the characters'. He barely appears in CGs, has no body sprite, and it is through his observations and his thoughts and his call to make choices that the game progresses.
I think that specific trait of MC is fascinating, especially given how deep reaching Monika's manipulation is. During Act 1 he is active, he is talkative, he has a definitive (and yet inconsistent, based on which girl(s) you're speaking to) personality. He has thoughts about just about everything going on. And yet in Act 2 he is reduced to dust. He stops having any kind of commentary and he almost never remarks upon the horrible occurrences around him unless prompted or unless it is something that could plausibly happen in the realm of reality, like Yuri abandoning him for 10 minutes and Natsuki collapsing on him. But even then he's still significantly muted. Yuri and Natsuki have a horrible fight and the only kind of response he tries to throw out is co-opted by Monika. He witness Yuri declare her love for him and talk about how she would love to pull his skin open and crawl inside of him and the only thing he has to say is "yes" or "no" when she asks if he likes her back. And then he physically cannot move or speak or react because the world is so far gone that Yuri's death has damaged him, the script, so much that all he hears is gibberish coming from her lifeless mouth.
And like... that's neat to me. I like that by the end of Act 2 the script is so off the rails and so far gone from reality that MC can no longer really function as a person, because the script is barely functioning. He stops reacting to anything happening around him and most of the conversations he has are just the girls talking at him. Monika has to literally rewrite the script and force Yuri and Natsuki to say things to further her agenda or keep the scene rolling. MC had a clear and very human response to Sayori's death because it was a plausible but horrible (and not forced) event that could happen naturally. Yuri's death was so jarring and away from the scope of the natural order of his world that MC (and Yuri, by extension) can only sit frozen and broken until Natsuki and Monika show up to force new progress.
Like Monika's effect on the girls has been talked to death and it is an interesting topic but I also think what she unintentionally did to the POV character of the game is also something neat. It really adds to the feeling of the world in DDLC being hollow. The MC is a half-character who can only react in incredibly predictable ways, and when the world stops being predictable, he stops being anything more than a walking camera for Monika to speak into.

yknow part of why i wanted to start catching up on wc is because the nightheart discourse intrigued me with how much misinfo was spread about him, and how youtubers who show sourced pages can still definitely be holding their own biases, i wanted to be like "ok i want to read these for myself and come to my own conclusions about nightheart and characters like him" because if being a dovewing stan has taught me anything, its that it can really sting when most people's opinion of your fave kitty is from misinformed fandom osmosis, and i wanted to be fair and give the guy a chance, try to see what people like about the guy, even if i figure from what i hear that i'd hate him based on the tropes he embodies
but now im thinking that like, if i hated alderheart THAT much then i dont think nightheart stands that much of a chance sdlkflksdfs

What is the I'd let you win tag? 🥺 👉👈
It’s a ship tag for two pov characters from my original novel.
They’re the duo I said people would like if they liked Corinthian/Wanderer in tibyim as their dynamic was basically backwards engineered from those two.
They’re the my monster recognises your monster, they’re dark mirrors, he’s her mentor (but trying to make her worse), they’re extreme versions of each other, they’re the academic idiots who can discuss anything for hours (he’s a genius, she has insatiable desire for knowledge), he’s extremely dark and manipulative while she’s grey at best so their morality is agree to disagree since he sees the worst in people while she sees the best, big I chose you/I made you dynamic, he’s Icarus and she’ll either help and prevent the fall or crash with him. Because who doesn’t love a good dose of devotion that corrupts and potential tragedy?
