Vent post y'all are gonna hate me for.

I viscerally hate how the Duffers treat most of their non white or queer characters and I hate even more viscerally, how y'all big byler blogs in your circle jerk of other 5 big byler blogs casually like to ignore many red flags the show has.

Y'all like to say: "tHe DufFeRs ArE gReAt WrIteRs" and it's like girl, who are you lying to??? They aren't top shit writers at all. The Duffers are pretty mid imo. Yeah, they run a good show that's fun to watch and theorize abt , but that doesn't mean they're good writers cuz they're not.

1. they completely side lined Will during s3 for the sake of their straight romances: lumax, jancy, mlvn, duzie and partly stobin (even if stobin wasn't endgame, thankfully, Steve's intentions were clearly wanting to date Robin and they gave it a lot of screen time). Will was sidelined bc he didn't fit the straight romance plotline bc they planned to make him gay or whatever. Now in s4 Will and his feelings have been used as mlvn toilet paper. Yes, we like to say this is build up for byler but canonically, Will's feelings have been used to clean the shit mlvn leaves behind.

2. Billy was sympathized a lot during the last 2 seasons. They gave him the sad backstoryTM in order for ppl to feel sorry for him. Billy's backstory is literally Jonathan's but whatever.

3. El's anger issues are constantly girlboss-ified. They down play her bullying situation and literally just use it for El to be a ''girlboss" without realizing how triggering that is. As someone who has lived bullying, seeing it be ignored by canon and fanon is super sad. The whole Rink-O' Mania experience must have been so traumatizing for her yet, everyone absolutely forgets abt it 🤷🏻‍♀️

4. Robin, Erica and Argyle are stereotypical characters. Robin is the quirky lesbian with social anxiety, Erica is the badass black woman and Argyle is the Latino stoner that sells weed to white kids and works as a pizza delivery guy.

5. Altho Argyle and Eddie both do drugs, (Eddie actually sells K-12 to a minor and nobody batted an eye. He has a huge fan base). Eddie is held in a pedestal bc "poor thing 🥺 he lives in a trailer with his uncle 🥺". Tell me a single fact you know abt Argyle that isn't "he smokes weed", "he is Jonathan's only friend", "drives a van" and "he works at a pizzeria". Exactly, Eddie is given a useless backstory and Argyle isn't.

6. Dustin stopped being important to the plot sometime around s2 and s3. He is only there to curse and be mildly funny. My guy needs to hangout with ppl his age cuz he only hangs out with seniors.

7. El needs to stop having so much "I'M THAT BITCH" screentime like I need in s5 for El's arc to not just be her becoming more powerful and falling in love with Mike. I need the Duffers to explore her trauma and problems.

8. Angela should have been run over by the van.

9. Patrick should have been given a backstory that isn't the basic "strict black parents that hit their kids cuz they are a disgrace". Patrick's backstory is actually racist af, fight w the wall.

10. As Lex already said, they didn't trigger tag the ep where Jason and his friends assault Lucas and Erica. Like wtf? Why was that necessary? Why did I have to see a black boy being held at gunpoint by some white guy?? Was it relevant to the plot?? I don't think so. And then I've got to see ppl online be like "Jason wasn't that bad. He was just mourning" like bitch you can stfu. This is what happens when you make the racist assholes conventionally attractive.

Also the fact that Lucas's arc is fulfilled by him fist-fighting Jason and "embracing his weirdness" aka accepting he is black. His arc was not fulfilled at all cuz that ending spoke so loud to me. It showed how little empathy ppl have towards the struggles poc ppl living in the Midwest have. Y'all circle jerks can only see racism when it's super obvious.

Furthermore, parents complained when ST showed "an excessive amount of smoking" yet nobody batted an eye when Billy tried to run over Lucas, when Erica (an 11 y.o ffs) was chased by white kids or when Lucas was held at gunpoint by Jason.

All of this happened while they focused on Max's guilt and mourning that, yeah, are important but certainly not less important than racism!!!

11. In s3, they gave us that whole Nancy vs The Bigots arc that was honestly just triggering and useless. It didn't help Nancy's character at all, quite the opposite it put unnecessary angst.

12. Lonnie being presented as an abuser just for him to never be spoken of again. Can we please get to explore the trauma he left the Byers's with?

13. The fact that both queer relationships are considered "sloppy seconds" is extremely sad. Both Vickie and Mike are rebounding from their failed relationship with Robin and Will. These 2 ships have caused more commotion than Jancy and Jopper together! (These last ships are technically sloppy seconds too but everybody forgets that. Shocker!!)

14. Last but not least, ppl blame Argyle for being the one to get Jonathan into smoking weed as if Jonathan probably wasn't the one looking for it. Let me tell you, that you only find weed if you look for it.

Will and the Boys Don't Cry.

Remember the picture when we were first shown Will on his birthday? In case anyone hasn't noticed, there were headphones in the picture and let's think, who else was wearing headphones and under what circumstances? Uh, Max! Max wore them so that she wouldn't fall under the full influence of Vecna and become his victim, music helped her so called survival.

Now let's get to why Will carries them around. I have two suggestions.

Everyone on the team has headphones now just in case Vecna decides to face someone.

Will is scared. Will himself realizes that he can feel Vecna's presence, in addition he will probably hear him, his voice and his thoughts, which will be very frightening to Byers. Because of the fear, he may choose his favorite song and walk around with headphones on at all times, so that if anything happens, he won't be influenced by Vekna and Vekna won't take over Will's mind. I also think that there will be a similar situation as with Lumax, that Mike will have to turn on these headphones in case of anything, I think Will will warn him alone about it all, thus trusting Mike.

Now something I've been thinking about very, very hard. Most people, and I think or thought that Will's song would be “Should I Stay or Should I Go”, but if you notice the details, you can see the poster in Will's room! “Boys don't cry”, this song references Will in a lot of ways, and if it's in season 5 in his headphones, it will be very symbolic, and will show the meaning of everything we've seen.

Let's take Max as an example. She has “Running Up That Hill” in her headphones. The lines from the song literally refer to what Max is feeling and it also shows how she feels about Billy and how she regrets what happened at the end of season 3 and how she would take it all back. The chorus from her song, literally speaks to Max's morale and what she wants. -And if I only could, I'd make a deal with God, And I'd get him to swap our places, Be running up that road, Be running up that hill, Be running up that building. If I only could, oh These lines literally refer to the fact that if Max had known what would happen, she would not have stood still, but would have tried to help her half-brother. She would have been ready even for the same death as her brother, as long as he did not die. Also, there are very interesting lines like.

“You don't want to hurt me,but see how deep the bullet lies.” which refers to their relationship while Billy was alive. The guy hurt his sister, which she hasn't forgotten, and that deep down inside of her, she wished him dead inside of her, which she now regrets.

What about Will? I know most people have already figured this out, but for those who haven't and don't know the context - this song is about the inner thoughts that guys have when they're going through an unpleasant/transitional moment in their lives. It's also popular in the LGBT+ community. Let's go through the parts that I find most interesting and start from the beginning. -I would say I'm sorry, If I thought that it would change your mind. But I know that this time, I have said too much. Somehow it reminds me a lot of Will helping Mike with his relationship with Al, while ignoring his feelings and even confessing his feelings while hiding under his sisters name. Also, I think there's a season five reference here. I mean, Will could talk about the painting and the speech, but not say what he meant about his feelings! And the lines “I would say I'm sorry if I thought that it would change your mind.” show that Mike could have left with some anger and it left a mark on Will and that he can't even apologize now, and that apologizing won't change anything. (Yes, I know I sound creepy, please.) Now let's get to the chorus. -I tried to laugh about it,

Cover it all up with lies. I tried to laugh about it, Hiding the tears in my eyes. Cause boys don't cry. Boys don't cry. Sounds like Will's confession to Mike to me. He's not showing his real feelings, he's hiding everything under the “Al” mask. and underneath the mask, he keeps his feelings hidden, not showing them. He himself, quietly crying, quietly suffering, realizing for himself that his feelings will never be reciprocated, that he will have to live with it and come to terms with it, and he buries it all by himself and tries to cope with it all by himself. -I would tell you, That I loved you, If I thought that you would stay. But I know that it's no use, That you've already, Gone away… Again he says that he has buried all his hopes and feelings, he sees Mike pulling away from him and as if he is walking away from him, so talking about feelings, about declarations of love is useless in his opinion. Literally the whole song shows Will, shows a guy who in his opinion has already missed his chance, he realizes that he can't change anything and hides himself and his feelings only deeper into himself.

I hope that Will will have this song in season 5, but I will also say that there is a possibility that in case of anything, Mike can play this song, so much in this song refers to Mike.

Pruett is one of those motorsport journalists that were previously a mechanic so not only has that technical knowledge to give a different insight and expand on the information we have so far but has sources amongst the engineering and technical sides that’s others often don’t have.

Brown will ask questions, having gone to Tim Cindric several times since this all came to light and do his own investigations.

And Fryer, throws shade and stirs shit on twitter hoping it will somehow convince someone to give a tell all on her fainting couch.

When people including Mario and Michael fucking Andretti were calling her out on her bullshit, what did she do?

Compared herself to a journalist who had been murdered in Russia for speaking out against Putin and then used Billy Monger’s fund raiser as further deflection.

She acts like this, knowing that because she works for AP, people will still come to her with stories.

We’ve literally had Zak and Chip fight over her fainting couch throughout the Palou Contract saga.

And it’s fucking infuriating.

What do you think Homelander’s attraction to Becca was? It’s not like at the Christmas party she was the only woman there, and by that point he had no idea who Butcher was. The actress that plays her is attractive, but the later scenes (season two and even just their initial introduction) between them suggest there’s something more to his attraction.

It’s obvious in the season two scenes that Homelander and Becca have, he has some lingering attraction. I think that’s primarily led by the fact that they have a son together and Homelander desperately wants a family, and also that Homelander is looking for a new woman to attach himself onto since Madelyn died. Perhaps he just wants what he can’t have especially knowing that she’s still in love with Butcher and he wants someone to love him that unconditionally. The main reason I thought of this is because in my opinion, Homelander isn’t the type of character to do something without a reason. Usually he has one even if it’s not a good reason.

ah yes, potentially one of the most contentious/controversial plot points in the fandom. canon gives us VERY little to go on here, so excuse me while I just ramble my take on the whole situation. i extrapolate a good amount. everyone you ask is going to have a different answer, and each one is as valid as any other. this is simply mine!

Homelander's greatest sin isn't wrath or pride. It's envy. He is a bottomless well of yearning for what he doesn't have, and he is viciously covetous. We see this play out most plainly in his one sided beef with a literal baby.

When he meets Becca, she's beautiful, quick witted, strong willed and independent. A career woman. Not only that, she's helping manage his career by handing his social media, which is part of his public perception. Very important to him! He already has a ton of wires crossed when it comes to the women in his life acting as both coworkers/Vought employees and emotional surrogates, i.e. Maeve, Madelyn and Vogelbaum. Plus who knows how many nanny mommies.

At this point, we don't know how long he's been with Maeve, but we have at least another 6 years before the pair breaks up. He's enjoying Maeve, but he wants more. He always wants more. Maybe he wants a wife, and she's refusing him that.

But Becca is a wife. He sees that ring on her finger and it boils his blood that he doesn't have that classic, romantic symbol of commitment. Of love. Worse yet when he meets her husband! The figurative boogeyman. The baby stealing his mommy and her milk. We're not there in the story yet, but we do see a trend here. It likely didn't start here: imagine what it was like for him to find out Vogelbaum had kids. Kids he loved. I bet that gutted Homelander. It should have been him.

Homelander, in his mind, can never win. Can never have enough. Anyone else having means they are directly taking away what should be his. It could be that it was never really about Becca specifically so much as the archetype she represented.

That carries us into season 2 where Becca takes on an additional archetype that Homelander is now lacking: mother. I think you're right on the money that a good amount of his attraction comes from the fact she's the mother of his son.

He falls pretty deep down the fantasy family rabbit hole with Becca, though. He not only inserts himself into their lives and routine, he takes a renewed interest in Becca. He snoops through her things, smells her clothes, and engages with her well beyond just interacting with Ryan. Then comes the scene where he finds her hidden stash of Billy merch, and the fantasy is shattered. She's still in love with another man. She's a wife, but she's not his wife. She's the mother to his son, but she's not someone who will fulfill those emotional needs for him. I've made this comparison before, but it's very reminiscent to the breakdown he has when he sees his baby blanket in his fake childhood home. He moves on VERY easily to Stormfront when she not only presents herself as a mother to her own child, but a potential mother for his child.

I'm backtracking a little here, but when Maeve called Homelander over from Billy and Becca at the party, I always got the vibe she was doing so quite purposefully. I wonder how much of their early relationship was Maeve feeling like she was performing damage control. Managing him, curbing his destructive behaviors. Did she see that covetous edge in his eye when he would look at Becca, at her ring? Did she try to tell him to leave her alone, play it like a joke?

We have the deleted scene where Maeve says the reason they broke up was because he couldn't keep it in his tights, but we don't really have any other explicit instances or even mentions of Homelander liberally sleeping around. Did she know about Becca, or at the very least did she make an educated guess when the woman disappeared? Maybe she felt like he did it to spite her. Did she know about Madelyn?

Ultimately we know Maeve becomes complicit in his crimes. She feels her hands are dirty with the same blood. She becomes jaded, she's no longer the hero. She's just an accessory. I definitely don't think it started that way, though.

anyways, I hope this somewhat answered your question! I have a tendency to jump around a lot and word vomit, but this generally covers my take on why that all went down the way it did.

Honestly, I would love to write a fic someday that digs more into my thoughts here. Becca deserves so much more than what she got from the narrative.

"Am I dead?" Max says as she hears someone enter the hospital room. She's staring at her own body lying on the bed, bones broken, chest artificially inflated, knowing that the person won't answer her.

Because they can't. Not when her literal soul is standing outside her body.

"Probably not," a voice answers her causing Max to freeze. She'd know that voice from anyway.

She turns around and comes face to face with Billy. Billy who's definitely dead because she'd held his lifeless corpse in her arms, because she'd watched the EMTs declare him gone as they covered his body in a white cloth, because she'd watched as they lowered his body into the ground, never to come back out as it was re-covered with sand.

But there he is, looking well, clean clothes, neatly done hair, no injuries. He even has a small smile on his face. Not a smirk, not a forced polite smile, but a real one. Like the one she'd seen in an old photo she'd found in the room when they had been moving out.

"So I'm really dead?" Max asks, letting out a sob.

Surprising herself - and probably Billy - she runs to give him a hug, holding on tighter when his arms wrap around after a second of him standing stock still.

"You're not yet dead Maxine," Billy tells her. It's a whisper but it's firm, believing, as if he knows just by being with her. "You've still got your whole life ahead of you."

"What about you? What about your life?" Max says through her tears, pulling back to look at Billy. His eyes are rimmed red, like at the pool's sauna. Like at Starcourt. "You need to come back Billy. I want you to come back."

"You know that I can't Max," Billy says softly. Max did know, but hearing him confirm it breaks her heart. Even after everything, she still ended up missing him. She wished that they had done more for each other.

"I'm sorry," she whispers, fully stepping away from Billy. "For- for-"

"I know Max," Billy ruffles her hair. "I heard you when you were at my grave."

Max's head jerks up at that. "You were there?"

Billy nods.

"I wanted to tell you that I was sorry too, that I wished things had gone differently," billy says as he looks across the room, towards the bed where her body lies.

She looks so small in the bed, with tubes going into her body, machines surrounding her. Even her red hair is limp and lifeless against the white sheets. Aside from the lovely flowers Joyce Byers had gotten her, it feels like the only color in the room.

"I want you to live, Max," Billy says, turning to look at her. There's a determination in his eyes that she's never seen before, not like that. "I didn't drag my ghost all the way from my graveside just to have you give up. You're Mad Max, one of the best arcade gamers, aspiring skateboarder, and the most annoying shitbird."

That gets Max to laugh, making Billy smile at her.

"Why are you being so nice?" Max asks, the words coming out despite her not really wanting to know the answer.

"Because death has given me a lot of time to think about things," Billy says with a shrug. "Well, getting possessed had gotten the ball rolling. Which fuck you by the way."

"What did I do?" Max squeaks as Billy flicks her forehead.

"You couldn't have mentioned the other dimensional creature that wanted you dead?" Billy asks, glaring. Max wonders if death has made him soft around the edges since his glare doesn't even hold any heat.

"I didn't think you'd be affected," she defends. Billy chuckles softly and Max joins in. The entire situation feels so unbelievable, so surreal. "Did it really want me dead?"

Billy's smile drops. There's a brief pained look that goes across his face before he schools his features. It makes her heartbreak.

"Time for us to go Max," he says with a forced smile.

"Billy, where are you really?" Max asks.

"Right here Maxine."

"Stop lying," Max says, getting angry. She pushes against her brother and for a brief moment their back in the upside down. It's the hospital version and Billy's back to his injured, blood covered look from Starcourt Mall.

Then everything seems to snap back in place and Billy's back to looking like Billy.

"Where are we?" Max asks again, taking a step back from Billy. "Where are you?"

"You know where I am Maxine," Billy says, sounding resigned.

"Are you dead?"

"I-" A sigh "Not really, but I don't think so."

"What does that mean?" Max demands.

"Why don't you find out?" Billy suddenly challenges.

"What?" Max says, confused.

"Why don't you wake up and find out if I'm really alive or dead?"

"That doesn't seem like-"

"Maxine," the tone of Billy's voice cuts her off. "Wake up and come and find me."

Max doesn't know what to say for a minute. She has never seen him so serious before.

"okay," she chokes out before clearing her throat. "Okay, I'll come find you."

"Good, then I'll see you then," Billy smiles and it looks a little sad.

"How do I wake up though?" Max asks, having already tried everything in the two days that she had been watching her body.

"It doesn't really matter, not that you are ready to go back," Billy shrugs. Max nods and turns to look at her body.

In a moment of impulse, she decides to run towards the bed and belly flop on to it.

In a split second, she's gasping awake, her limbs suddenly heavy. There are doctors and nurses all around her, one even holding shock paddles.

"Max, oh my goodness, Max," her mother's cries draw her attention away from the faint laughter that sounds suspiciously like Billy's.

"What happened?" She tries to say, but the pain in her throat makes it hard. A nurse offers her some ice chips on a spoon, which she gratefully accepts.

"You stopped breathing, then your heart stopped and we thought you were going to die," Lucas says from where he's standing with the rest of the party in the corner of the room. "You nearly died Max."

"I-" Max cuts herself off, thinking back to Billy. That was why he had been so insistent that she wake up. He saved her life.

And she was going to make sure she found a way to return the favor.

This boy can be a little shit sometimes. If he doesn't like someone and they do something at school, he will go straight to the nearest trustworthy teacher/staff and tell on them. Griffin can't hold his own in a fight that well (especially with older kids), so he settles for getting them reported as soon as possible.

Even then, if it's his family member or friend or something he'll basically blackmail them into doing what he wants or else he'll tattletale on what they did. He's pretty ruthless sometimes.

Billy

Listen, listen; Billy can be a real smart-ass dick when he wants to be. Telling on someone isn't his first thought in most situations--it's usually to get out of the situation at hand and try to let it play out--but he's not afraid to. He's the type to not tell on someone for shoplifting if he likes them but to definitely tell on someone he doesn't like for making the slightest mean comment. Priorities, I guess.

Billy's not so much of a straight-up blackmailer, but he will still be like with any family members his age of younger, "I'll tell your dad you stole broke my Superman doll last year if you don't give me back my Snickers bar." Wait, no, that is blackmailing, never mind.

Gwen

I love Gwen but she will report you if she doesn't like you and if it's serious enough. I mean, that on it's own sounds fair, but what I mean is don't cross her. Because if you do, you'll either have her chasing after you or you'll be in the principal's office for something you did like, last semester.

Her and her friend Susie probably gossip a lot as people do during sleepovers, so she's able to get dirt on others that way. Still, she'll make a deal with someone: don't tell on her to her father, and she won't tell on you. Anything to avoid getting in trouble.

Finney

Like sister, like brother. The only things holding Finney back from dobbing on someone are his fear of getting bullied and also his general sense of empathy. But trust me he's still very capable of doing it. He just doesn't report his bullies because if he does he'll get beaten by them. Tough world.

However, I imagine he also does it in a playful sense. He'll go, "I'm gonna report you if you don't stop teasing me!" but mean it lightheartedly. He probably won't actually report you, but he will walk up to the teacher and strike casual conversation to make it look like he is. It's kind of just how he shows he likes someone.

Bruce

Now we're getting into the "I'll never tell on you" section. Bruce is a pretty chill guy--it's part of the reason why he's so popular. He'll keep a secret most of the time. Honestly, he never bothers to tell on people when there's been a fight. Teachers will ask him what happened because they trust him, but he'll just say he walked right past it (and he probably did). Plus, the news will get around to them soon enough anyway.

However, Bruce still has a morale about him. He will report someone if they've done something truly bad or if they've hurt his friends. Bruce is loyal to people, and will adopt a "save the most" attitude, so if he has to report one friend to save more from getting bullied, he will do that. Just be nice, yeah?

Robin

Robin's literally so loyal to the people he's closest to. He'd barely tell on anyone for anything. His good friend got into a fight at school and the teachers want to know what happened? He doesn't have a clue. Yeah, sure, he bandaged his friend up after it happened, and he may have been giving them fighting tips earlier, but it's not like he was involved. Totally (/sarcasm)!

Robin's only gonna tell on someone if they, like, really, really hurt someone. Not even Vance's fights get from his mouth to the teacher's ears because he knows there's no point to that. Word will get around. But even if it was some super secret fight, he'd stay quiet about it and just make sure his friend is okay. So yeah, you've gotta really fuck up to get told on by him.

Vance tells on nobody. Ever. If they're somebody he likes, he keeps their secrets close to them. In fact, he's so wary of letting people's secrets out he doesn't let them tell him anything at all. And if it's someone he doesn't like? Simple; he just beats them up and/or screams at them.

Yeah, he's the best secret-keeper in town, surprisingly. Literally, if you are bursting to tell someone something but you just can't? Tell him. Just make sure you find the right time and be sure to not interrupt his pinball game. And be sure to have a few bandages on hand for the aftermath, too.

Going off canon and not the guide because I think it gave SMeyer the opportunity to retcon a few things, I don’t think the imprint goes both ways. I think SMeyer couldn’t fathom the idea of the romantic relationships she wrote not working out.

Billy Black thinks imprinting has to do with strengthening the werewolf bloodline, that the wolves will imprint on someone who is most likely to pass on the gene. That’s a plausible theory, but it’s hardly romantic, and I think it’s tragic because the wolves already lose so much when they begin to phase, and the imprint turns them into thralls, which ironically is a more vampire thing traditionally.

My main reason why the imprint doesn’t go both ways and why it’s not romantic is Jacob and Renesmee. First, Jacob was going to kill Renesmee after he thought Bella had died in Breaking Dawn, and she was an innocent infant. The only thing that saved her from being murdered was the very conveniently timed imprint. Second, there’s no reason why Renesmee of all people would pass on the werewolf gene. The gene is recessive and is activated by vampire presence, and she has no Quileute ancestry. Third, we don’t even know that Renesmee can have children! She does not need food, just blood, so when she reaches physical maturity like Nahuel, what’s to say she doesn’t stop menstruating, what’s to say she even starts menstruating in the first place? I also think that given Renesmee’s half vampire nature, any baby she and Jacob would have would spontaneously abort given Jacob’s comment about if Rosalie spat in his food he would have suffered physical consequences in Breaking Dawn. Even though Renesmee isn’t venomous, she is half vampire and that has to have an effect. Lastly, I remember what Jacob was like when Bella turned him down (also. I just don’t like the idea of Jacob wanting Bella and then wanting her daughter), and he didn’t respect her consent or her wishes. So what happens if Renesmee turns him down? God forbid, I think something similar to Sam and Emily might happen, but I think it would actually be a choice on Jacob’s end.

I think Sam and Emily are making the best of a bad situation, with both of them aware that had he had a choice, it would have been Leah. I think Quil hates himself for imprinting on Claire and the tribe tries to foster distance between them (which the Cullens never do! It’s not Jacob’s fault but they don’t even try to protect Renesmee) and Jared and Kim turned out to be lucky. As for Rachel and Paul, I think Rachel is in her 20s and Paul is in his teens although he physically looks like he’s older, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Rachel got the ick and left because being with Paul would be questionable ethically and it would tie her to the reservation, a place that she’d determinedly left before.

The imprint serves to literally erase someone’s character and force them into a relationship and I refuse to take it seriously as a romantic device. Maybe as a tragic one because it makes things more interesting, but there isn’t sufficient evidence for make me think it goes both ways. I think Bella is an ignorant romantic who only cares that she gets to keep Jacob, and SMeyer desperately needed to tie up a loose end.

The wild thing about Jacob and Renesmee specifically is that apparently the imprint happened in Forever Dawn. So in a world where New Moon and Eclipse didn't happen, and so there was no 'love triangle' at all, Jacob still imprinted on Renesmee. That was always the plan. In which case why on earth write Jacob and Bella the way she did in the middle books? There's no saving the concept of imprinting on a baby, it's always going to gross me out no matter how much "it's innocent!!" SM insists, but at least in Forever Dawn, Jacob and Bella were not an almost-couple themselves; Jacob imprints on a family friend's daughter, not his first love's daughter.

But yeah, I think she did retcon things in the guide, and in canon her explanation is that imprints work out because "who can resist that level of devotion?" Which, I mean . . . depends, right? With say Jared and Kim, where Kim already had a crush on him, him suddenly noticing her and paying attention to her and showering her with love probably felt great! But in another context, some dude constantly following you around and professing eternal devotion can easily be stalkerish and creepy. I'm sure SM's explanation is that "well they wouldn't imprint on someone who would find it stalkerish" but that's super convenient, isn't it?

And yeah, the 'thrall' aspect just absolutely kills any sense of romance for me. I'm sure there are people who enjoy this trope and no shade if you do, but as I said before, for me, love without choice is just meaningless. It's empty. An example I've used before is two people working at a soup kitchen. Once is a volunteer; they are taking time out of their life to give back to the community because they want to, they choose to. Another is performing court-ordered community service, or was forced to go by their parents, or whatever. They aren't there by choice. Both are doing the same thing: helping to feed people in need. But which one is more meaningful, which one would impress you? It's the one who shows up because they choose to, not the one who HAS to be there. That's how imprinting feels to me. Sure, they allegedly become the perfect partners to their imprint, but because they have to. They have no free will of their own. That's HORRIFYING, not romantic.

So, yeah, I'm never going to like imprinting. As you said, as a horror thing there's potential, but as a romantic trope it just Does Not Work for me. And what's so weird to me is that in any other YA series the protagonists would be fighting against the concept of some outside force choosing your partner for you. How many dystopian series have some premise of like "I was matched with Hunk A by the govt/computer/my parents/my religion, but I have feelings for Hunk B!" and then they take down the whole system in the process? Jacob just being like "welp guess my life revolves around this blood-drinking psychic genius baby now" instead of trying to fight to make choices for himself is always going to feel wrong to me.

Robin Buckley is a terrible person.

She’s convinced of it.

Robin is twenty-six years old (the oldest she’s ever been) and she feels with the utmost certainty that she is a terrible person.

Truthfully, there isn’t one specific, character-defining moment that she attributes this to — well, that’s not entirely true; she can (and does) think of many examples that support the notion — and in a general sense, she knows she’s kind of an asshole, though that’s mostly by accident, a natural consequence of her tendency to she says things without thinking too much about it beforehand. Still, sometimes it is on purpose when she doesn’t really have the energy to do anything about it. She thinks she’d rather be an asshole on purpose than by accident because at least then it would be a choice rather than a product of her character, but the stats might not be in her favor there. In any case, Robin just knows she’s a bad person down to the core of who she is.

She’s certainly not good, after all, and if she’s not a good person, then it stands to reason that she must be a bad one.

Literally speaking, Robin is clumsily navigating her way through Logan Airport at rush hour going purely off her limited memory of the last time she was here — Christmas of ’91, when Nancy had hosted the holiday gathering that she, Robin, Eddie, and Steve have made into a tradition over the years. Eddie had hosted this time around, at his minuscule studio apartment in Marion, Indiana, and that had also marked the last time their little group had been together, the last time Steve and Eddie (boyfriends) had seen each other, the last time Nancy and Robin (kind of, sort of dating but stubbornly not putting a label on anything while they live on literal opposite sides of the country) had seen each other.

That’s why Robin is fighting her way through Boston Logan on a Friday evening in February, anyways — to see Nancy (and to escape the apartment in Tacoma she shares with Steve while he and Eddie spend their Valentine’s Day doing sappy shit and inevitably fucking their brains out. Gross).

Nancy is pretty much the greatest person Robin has ever known — well, aside from Steve, but Robin is pretty sure everyone knows by now that Steve comes first in all matters of hers. Everyone else is just vying for second and at this point Nancy’s pretty much got that locked in.

It’s funny — Robin hadn’t actually liked Nancy all that much at first.

Well, that’s not true either.

At first, like, truly at first, when they’d merely been fellow classmates at Hawkins High, Robin hadn’t really thought anything of Nancy at all (aside from wrinkling her nose at her prissy, goody-two-shoes nature, but even that was more of an alt kids against the world thing than anything else). She’d barely known Nancy— their school was tiny, so it was practically impossible to not know of someone, but Robin certainly hadn’t known her well enough to have any other opinion of her besides decidedly neutral.

Their paths had officially crossed during the Starcourt Mall fiasco, and in the immediate aftermath, that opinion had been mostly unchanged. Sure, Nancy had been a little bit mean to Robin, maybe, but curt might be a better word for it, and either way the situation at hand hadn’t exactly left time to spare for pleasantries, so she hadn’t thought too much about it at the time. Plus, Robin had later watched Nancy practically get steamrolled by Billy Hargrove as she shot at him with an actual gun, so she chalked it up to Nancy being a little more intense than she’d originally thought.

Not too long after Starcourt, though, when just enough time had passed that her thoughts were only sometimes plagued with reminders of what she’d gone through and what she’d seen instead of constantly, she’d bullied the previous two years of Upside Down activity out of Steve, and with it, she’d gotten the true, unabridged, demo-dog-infused details of his breakup with Nancy.

And from that point on Robin had hated her.

max and mike parallelism/similitude : analysis

thinking about how the situational/behavioural similarities between max and mike at the start of s4 are so striking. both were showing signs of depression, both were unusually grumpy and snarky even for their normal selves, and both were being intentionally separate from the people around them.

how both of them have deeply suffered survivor's guilt (mike with el and max with billy) and have blamed themselves for everything that happened to them (el and billy).

how mike had to go through such extremely strong emotions of losing someone who meant so much to him and was literally there to witness how will got possessed and was on the verge of dying (again), and max was there when billy was literally stabbed (multiple times) to death.

no one their age was exposed to this kind of trauma throughout the show. only them. and one's deteriorating situation was shown explicitly while the other was portrayed as if he has no heart- and has become a universally hated character, only because we didn't get even a tiny bit insight into what he was going through.

and how max had almost all of these traumas resolved before (almost) dying in the end while mike has not resolved any (emphasis on the any) of his since the start and they are piling up only to burst or to get manipulated by-*GUNSHOTS*

and how it could have easily being mike getting vecna'd in s4 instead of max had their places been (hypothetically) exchanged, with all the trauma and insecurities and guilt in mike being a spectacular meal for vecna to feed on.

However… I hold absolutely no empathy for Dee 🤧

Dee has always been predatory in her actions imo, and I’m not surprised he never liked/trusted her. She first tried to hit on Elvis, who was of course not interested, and when that failed, she chose to go after his father, who was likely vulnerable and starved for female attention after Gladys' passing. Dee Stanley was still married while she and Vernon were dating in Germany, which was just a terrible situation to subject her three young sons too

And then, years after Elvis’ passing, Dee came forward with a new book about Elvis (one of several that she wrote for $$) that made accusations such as Gladys and Elvis were in a inc*stual relationship. What is possibly more disgusting than the baseless accusation itself is that Dee only used persons who had already passed away to corroborate her claim like Vernon Presley, Minnie Mae Presley, and Alberta who worked for the Presleys and was very close with Gladys and Elvis

So not only did she disrespect the memory of Gladys and Elvis, but she used people who were no longer alive as her sources because she knew they weren’t here to say otherwise…Whew that woman was unbelievably nasty and the fact that even her own sons wanted nothing to do with that book speaks volumes ⬇️

And like you mentioned, I truly believe that both Elvis and the Stanley boys would have been better off if their relationship ended in the 60s. It is so sad to see what their relationship devolved too (being dependent on one another for drugs) and how all four of them became victim to addiction ⬇️

It’s hard to accept but I don’t disagree with Lamar Fike saying that Elvis and his lifestyle more or less “corrupted” the Stanley boys. I can’t say that Elvis was fully to blame for everything they did but he was asking them to procure drugs, both prescription and illegal, and that in turn led to them having to take the fall for Elvis, even going as far as getting arrested in some cases ⬇️

So how could have Elvis gotten better when they were always there to get him what he wanted? Infact it was Ricky Stanley who gave Elvis his final pill packet the early morning of his passing

One of the biggest disasters Elvis’ dependency on them caused was the incident where Dave Hebler and Red West threatened to assault Ricky Stanley for supplying cocaine to Elvis. Dave and Red saw how Elvis was becoming more and more erratic because of it, and decided they had to go to the source to stop it

This incident ended up being one of the reasons that they got fired alongside Sonny West as they were trying to stop Elvis, who was in active addiction, from doing what he wanted which of course didn’t bode well ⬇️

And Red and Sonny found out about it, and they told Dave Hebler. Elvis was at the bar, too, and somehow the conversation got on that. Red said, “Elvis, this stuff is really bad for you. I wish you’d stop doing it and go get cured. This quote from Marty is why I try to have sympathy for everybody in Elvis’ group, they were put into an impossible situation as they either had to watch their friend suffer or try to put it a stop to it, which often led to Elvis having an outburst and threatening to fire them. Essentially they were damned if they did, and damned if they didn’t ⬇️

Addiction takes no prisoners and I think it’s important to remember that those who suffer from it are victims themselves. My heart breaks for Elvis, for the Stanley boys, and everyone who loved them during this time, it’s an impossibly difficult situation to deal with
