Stephen let you crash at his place, in the guest bedroom, then drove you to your first class of the day. All day, you felt this euphoria of Stephen’s night and yours. He opened up to you, and you to him. There wasn’t pressure, but trust.
Stephen ended up texting you that he hoped you had a good day and you sent him a smiley back, and wished him the same.
The next day, you were in your sociology class where Scott practically ran in when he saw you.
“Holy crap, Y/N,” he said, soaring in and landing in the seat beside you. “Did you hear?”
“Hear… what?” you urged, looking at him confused.
“Loki. He got punched, hard.”
“Good,” you muttered. “Listen, I really don’t want to talk about that ass any--”
“Don’t you wanna know what happened? Who did it?” he asked, clearly excited.
You frowned. “I don’t know. I mean--”
“You do. Okay, so word has it, Stephen Strange did it. He walked out of the science building. Right after that, he went and just nailed Loki--” He made a hitting motion from his left fist to his right palm “--Wham! Right in the jaw. Out in the courtyard. He didn’t say a word.”
A tiny smile played at your lips.
“Did you see it?” you wondered, trying to sound casual.
“Yeah. I did. It was pretty incredible. The guy just came up and socked him. Loki went down like a sack of potatoes. He was bleeding kinda bad and didn’t get up. He yelled at Stephen, but from what I could see, he didn’t respond.”
“That’s… Well, karma, right?” you said. You didn’t have any concrete evidence that Stephen did that for you, but if he did it right before he came to your dorm, it must’ve been about the bet.
“Right? It was awesome.”
“I bet it was,” you mused. You picked up your phone and texted him. “You hit Loki?”
“There’s no proof I did.”
“If there was, I’d enjoy seeing it.”
“Other than the bloody nose, and cut across his face, which I definitely did not give him, there is none.”
“Lol, duly noted. Thank you, any way. It means a lot.”
“Standing up for your honor was pretty easy.”
The goofiest grin crossed your face before you slipped your phone away for class. When all your classes were done for the day and you headed back to your dorm, you ran into Steve in the lobby.
“Hey,” you said, stopping him. “Could we talk?” you asked.
“Sure,” he obliged, a little confusion in his voice as you led him down the hall to your doorways.
“Hey, I just wanted to say thank you, for telling me about the bet. You didn’t have to tell me, but you did. I really appreciate that.”
He shook his head. “Eh, it was nothing.”
“No, it really was. You could’ve ignored it, said it was none of your business…”
With a somber smile, he said, “I couldn’t watch you get ridiculed like that. You don’t deserve it.”
A blossom of warmth spread in your chest. “Even after me and Bucky, and all that?”
He waved your words off. “What happened between you and Buck, stays between you two. You getting fucked over and not knowing about it, well that’s another thing.”
“Thanks, Steve.” You leaned up on your toes and wrapped your arms around his neck. “You’re a really good guy, Steve, I hope you know that. Bucky and I are both really lucky to have you in our lives.”
When you let go, he was blushing and rubbed the back of his neck. “Don’t sweat it.”
“Good night,” you bid him as you slipped into your room, ready to text Stephen some more.
-----------------------------
Friday night and you were back at Stephen’s house, rather than his dorm. The two of you liked the quiet, the privacy, the fact that you weren’t on campus, in the middle of all the bullshit.
You were in his room, a huge room with a king size, super soft bed and oversized TV. The TV was on low, as you two had ended up chit-chatting, shooting the shit about school and professors and classmates. You were going to play video games but both of you went into a lazy mode.
“You got your half of the lab report done?” he asked as he laid, his head hanging off the end of the bed.
“No, I blew it off,” you deadpanned, rolling your eyes. “Yes, it’s done. I’ll email it to you tomorrow if that’s cool.”
“Nope. Need it right now.”
“Psht, as if you could focus on homework with me around.”
He just laughed. “You excited about being a senior next year?”
“Yeah. I’m a little nervous. You?”
He rolled over, peering down at you while you still laid on your back. “Nervous? What are you nervous about?”
You looked off to the side, not sure if you were ready to be this open with him. He’d been a complete gentleman so far. Hell, you weren’t even dating or official or whatever. He hadn’t made one move at you, which was really nice. He was just… being a friend, listening, but you were so worried he would be another Loki. Even if he hit Loki, even if he was there for you afterward, you weren’t sure you were ready to just… let him in, let him all the way in.
But you took a deep breath.
“I’m trusting you here,” you announced, your tone heavy.
“I know,” he assured as he stared at you.
You sighed. “I’m nervous because I worry every day that I’ll fail as a psychiatrist. That I won’t treat someone properly and they’ll commit suicide. That someone will think I don’t care. That someone will accuse me of just being in it for the money… I worry that I won’t get into med school at all. I worry that my drive and passion will drive away anyone who might want to marry me.”
“It’d only drive away idiots,” he stated.
You gave a half smile. “Thanks.”
“You know… I left behind a lot of my friends at BU. I was close to quite a few of them. But that school was just awful. I needed to get out of there. For me. So when you were telling me about how you worried about your friendships falling apart, it’s okay. The friendships that should endure, do, and the ones that don’t… well they become a fond memory. But I was scared. I was nervous as shit. New campus, trying to figure out where to go, who to talk to, who not to talk to. Then this plucky girl comes up to me and invites me to a pre-med club. It was a sign I was where I belonged.”
A shy smile displayed on your face despite yourself.  “But what does that have to do with me worrying about being a failure?” you asked, curious as to why he said that.
“Because I know what it’s like to be scared. Worried your future isn’t going to work out exactly how you want it to.”
“But what it if doesn’t?” you asked.
“Well for one thing, it will, because you’re brilliant and hard working. But on the off chance it doesn’t, you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move forward, towards a new solution, a new path to get you where you wanna go. Just like I know you will do.”
“What’s come over you, Strange? Do I need to check you for a concussion? You’re being awfully nice to me?”
“I’m always nice to you,” he breathed as he gazed down at you.
The air suddenly shifted. Stephen wasn’t just this guy any more. He was… He was a guy that you wanted, really and truly wanted.
He eyed your lips then stared into your eyes before slowly coming down to meet your lips. As soon as his lips touched yours, it felt like you’d been rocketed to cloud nine. His lips were soft, extremely soft, the pressure ever so gentle on you. You didn’t feel trapped, or pinned, or pressured. He was putting the smallest amount on you to let you know he was, in fact, kissing you.
You pressed back slightly, letting him know his advances weren’t unwanted. He tasted, he felt, so different than Loki or Bucky. There was this… current that seemed to flow between you two. An energy you’d never felt before.
Within a second, he broke the spell around you. He leaned back slightly and peered down at you with a goofy smile.
“Was that as good for you as it was for me?” he asked. “What am I saying? Of course it was, you just kissed me.”
You grabbed a pillow and hit him. “You’re a cocky, arrogant bastard!” you teased, laughing.
“You haven’t objected yet.”
“I’m about to kick your ass all over this room, how’s that for objecting?” you asked, crossing your arms and smiling at him.
“I’d actually really like to see that.”
You rolled your eyes and turned onto your stomach to watch TV. “You’re twisted, Strange.”
“Maybe you should analyze me, doctor,” he joked as he settled beside you.
“Oh, good god, no. I don’t have all week.”
“Oh, so I need to pencil time in with you now?”
“Definitely. You don’t have any special pull here,” you teased, nudging him.
He laughed and the two of you enjoyed the night watching TV and eating popcorn.

Tumblr media
"Okay, so her name is (Y/N)," Steve spoke and pointed at the file he had thrown o the coffee table, "and she is enhanced."
The Avengers, except Thor and Peter, sat spread out on the living room couches. Some on chairs, some on the floor and some occupied the two sofas. They usually held briefings in the meeting room, but they all had a long week behind them, so no one was in the mood for uncomfortable office chairs.
"You know we have met her before. She started her training two weeks ago," Clint said and chewed one of the Gummy Worms Sam brought by.
Most of the team nodded at his statement. Well, not Tony; he was typing away on his phone.
"She was at your birthday party last week," Natasha added and tried grabbing some of the sweets, but Sam knocked her hands away.
Steve rolled his eyes at his teammates. Having a serious meeting was impossible. They were acting like children. It already took him 2 days to find a day where everyone was available. He liked to include and ask the whole team for his pledge because he knew half of them would pretend o be busy and not do him this favour. And he could do what he really didn't want to do and choose Bucky for this task. He had the hunch that it was going to end like this. The rest of the team tended to not engage in the extra activity. It's weird how lazy a budge of superheroes could be when it wasn't about Thanos Level threats. Well, except for Peter, but he had no say in this or anything for that matter. He was still in training, and Steve had his hands full with that one. Also because Tony had taken him under his wing and kept on updating his suit. The kid loved trying out the new technologies. Peter was also in school at the moment. Which was more important. Oh, and Thor. He was somewhere. Well, he probably making decisions as a king or beating up some otherworldly being.
"Okay... yea, anyways. Well, I started training (Y/N), and she isn't really good at hand to hand combat," he explained, and now Steve also felt the sudden urge to grab a Gummy Wurm.
Sam gave him a look. Apparently, Falcon didn't enjoy people taking his food. Steve took his hand back slowly and gave him an apologetic look. In the end, it was Sam's own fault to bring his precious snacks to a room full of those guys.
"And what exactly is your question?" Tony, who finally put his phone away, asked.
Steve sighed and rubbed a hand over his face. He stole an unsure glance at Bucky, who just sat on a chair with crossed arms. His face was a gruff mask. He stared at the picture of the young woman. Her smile seemed to be mocking Bucky, and he didn't like it. He didn't like her. Well, no, he did, but there was something about her that he hated. She got under his skin. She was just so reckless, sassy and straight up made stupid decisions all the time. But then she could just stand there looking so beautiful, being so funny and say something brilliant. And he hated that. He hated that he liked her and that she seemed to be the only woman that didn't put up with his shit.
"I need some help. I just can't get through to her," Steve sighed.
You could see in his friend's faces that they were looking for a way out. Their brains working for an excuse.
"And why do you need all of us here for that? The only people who seem to be able to help are Romanov, Clint and Icicle over there, and maybe Sam," Tony added.
He nodded to the grumpy soldier, who just narrowed his eyes at him. Steve ignored them and looked with hopeful eyes to the two Ex SHIELD agents.
"Don't look at me. You know I can't get through to her either," Clint held up his hands in defence.
Steve sighed. Wanda furrowed her brows and looked between the guys, not wholly understanding their issue with (Y/N).
"Why exactly can't you get through to her?" Wanda wanted to know and made it quotes at the word through.
Steve blushed and looked at the floor. He hated admitting it, but she was just so adorable, he couldn't go hard on her. She just gave him one of those smiles, which she used to charm everyone's pants off, and he wouldn't be able to even near his fist her face. He knew she manipulated him so she could get out of training.
"She has those two guys wrapped around her pinky," Natasha smiled.
Clint narrowed his eyes at the redhead. Natasha knew all along. She had observed the men around her. All falling for the girl's coy act. Clint seemed like he was about to adopt her, and Steve looked at her like she was the most innocent woman ever. That girl was good at manipulating men. If she wanted to.
"Then you train her," Clint said and bumped her shoulder.
Natasha shook her head apologetically.
"I am knee-deep in Wanda's combat training," She shrugged her shoulders.
The women shared a look. Wanda didn't need to see into Natashas head to find out how she wanted this to play out. With Bucky training her. Vision tilted his head to the side. He seemed to have calculated something.
"It appears there is only one solution. It seems like most of us aren't really trained in this combat mode, except for James," Vision pitched in.
Bucky raised his head by the mention of his name. His posture suddenly turned stiff. He shook his head.
"No," he stated.
"Buck...," Steve started and reached his hand out in a comforting gesture.
He was interrupted by Bucky getting out of his chair. The usually so calm soldier seemed unsure now.
"No, not going to happen," he added and pointed at Steve accusingly.
"But, it would help her. You are the only person that can get through to her," Steve said and jumped up as well.
What did that even mean? She was just a girl. Steve made a soothing gesture in his direction. The rest of the team watched them, intrigued. But they knew, they knew Bucky was irritated by (Y/N). It was no secret. Not even to her. She just enjoyed disagreeing with him.
A humourless laugh left Bucky's lips, and he shook his head in disbelief. He didn't want to believe that Steve would suggest or even agree with this idea.
"Are we talking about the same woman? She disagrees with me constantly," he said and pointed between himself and Steve.
Steve now also shook his head. That wasn't completely true, and Bucky knew it.
"Are you sure? Every time she suggests something, you disagree with her," Sam added.
Sam was on her side, always. Also, because he and Bucky didn't agree on things either. They enjoyed bickering, but it was different. He knew Sam would have his back and that they were actual friends. With (Y/N), he was really not sure if she would just stab him if she got annoyed by him. Bucky opened his mouth and closed it again. There was no point in denying what Sam said, though.
"That is because her ideas are stupid," he argued then anyways.
Steve was tired of this. Obviously, he knew that it would end in this argument. But Bucky ran away from her whenever he could. He knew that deep down, Bucky liked her. He just wasn't used to being challenged by a woman. She knew what she wanted, and she was headstrong, and Bucky hadn't met a lot of ladies like that. And maybe knowing her and exchanging more than those arguments with her would help him.
"Do it for me, Bucky. She needs help. I can't do it. And she promised she would listen to you," Steve asked.
She never promised such a thing, but Steve hoped he would forget about that statement tomorrow. His resentment crumbled. Bucky needed some pushing.
"Fine, I'll do it," he barked.
Without another word, he stomped out of the room. The team's eyes followed his angry steps.
"Seriously, that was easier than I thought," Tony said with a short nod.
Steve wouldn't say this was easy. He would hear Bucky complain for at least a month.
"Steve, do you think this is a good idea? Letting those two train together?" Natasha asked him.
Steve crossed his arms defensively. No, he wasn't, not at all. He wasn't sure what the deal between those two was. They had only known each other for two weeks, but they didn't seem to like one another from day one.
"No. But I didn't see you volunteer," he answered.
Natasha laughed and got off the chair elegantly. She didn't take Steve's defensiveness serious. To other people, he probably looked intimidating, but not to the Black Widow.
"Bucky is a freaking Drill Sargent, and you know it. And (Y/N) is just really stubborn. And lazy. A perfect combination," she mentioned and patted Steves' shoulder.
Sam tried to hide a laugh. Okay, she wasn't the only one who noticed.
"It's going to be fine," Steve said, his voice steady.
But his face didn't seem so sure anymore.
(Y/N) was ripped out of her sleep by someone pulling her blanket off.
"Get up, sleepyhead," a stern male voice said at the foot of her bed.
(Y/N) opened her eyes and was faced with a grumpy Bucky staring at her. The usually messy hair was tied to a bun at the nape of his neck. If it weren't this early, she would have stared at him and soaked in his attractive physic. She did that a lot. Stare at him. It's like her brain didn't want to, but her body had a mind of her own. Her eyes always travelled to him when he was in a room with her.
"Are you kidding? What time is it?" she mumbled, rubbing her eyes.
Her head moved around, trying to spot her phone to look at the time.
"It's six a.m. You are already thirty minutes late," Bucky stated and stepped to her closet.
"What are you talking about?" she asked and grabbed her phone from the nightstand.
It's not like she didn't trust him, but she needed to see the time herself. She spotted five texts and one call from Bucky. All of them urged her to get up or asked her where the hell she was. Stalker much? Where did he even get her number?
"I told you yesterday, the morning run starts at 5.30 a.m., and then we train," he said.
She dropped her phone on the bed with frustration and turned to him.
"I thought that was a joke," she whispered and then added with a louder voice, "what the hell are you doing?"
Bucky had opened her closet and started searching for something. How rude. Her underwear was in there.
"Looking for your training clothes," he said.
She frowned. Okay, Bucky was acting weird.
"I can dress on my own," she mumbled.
Bucky turned around suddenly. He seemed to have found what he wanted and dropped it on her bed. Yoga pants, Tank top and running shoes. (Y/N) sat up and stared at him.
"Are you sure? Just as good as you can be on time?" he asked sarcastically.
She wanted to slap that grin off his face. He always grinned at her like that. It seemed to be reserved for her. Bucky just liked being a pain in her ass.
"This isn't the freaking army, Barnes," she growled and stared at the pile.
It felt like she hadn't seen workout clothes in years. She didn't enjoy working out. This was weird for someone who wanted to become an Avenger. She knew she had to give her everything so they would take her fully into the team.
"Doll, if this were the army, you would be calling me Sargent Barnes," he said with a cheeky smile.
Then he turned around to the door. (Y/N) hated how much swagger he had in his step.
"Five minutes," he added.
(Y/N) grabbed the shoe on the bed and threw it. But it only hit the door and not his head.
"Well, screw you, Sargent Barnes," she yelled.
Then she fell back on the bed and let out a frustrated groan. She was sure she heard a male laugh through the door.
Natasha told her that this would be exhausting. Being trained by Bucky. He would go hard on her. She said something about the military background and Hydra training. But these were the Avengers. She didn't even understand why she needed this training. She had powers. She could adapt abilities by touching. If she touched Steve, she was just as strong as him. When (Y/N) touched Spidy, she could crawl walls and so on. She just couldn't fight. She never inherits their skills.
"I hate you," she said to him about the 50th time today.
Her back landed on the matt again. And she was surprised it wasn't broken yet.
"Your endurance as well as your upper body strength suck," he lectured her.
Bucky ignored her statement about hating him. She had mumbled it under her breath so many times he didn't feel the need to acknowledge it. (Y/N) huffed and stared at him reproachfully. Even now, she looked beautiful. Propped up on her elbows, covered in sweat with furrowed brows. She was pissed. At least she acted like it. She seemed to be angrier at herself for not getting it than at him. She did mess up a lot of the instructions he gave her. But she had potential.
"If you let me use my powers, it wouldn't be this bad. I would get your super serum strength," (Y/N) mumbled and rubbed a hand over her face.
Bucky laughed and stretched a hand out to help her up. It was the gentleman in him. Something he never got entirely rid of over the years. He wasn't going soft on her, but he still had basic manners, like holding open the door and helping a woman up.
"Steve let you use your powers, didn't he?" Bucky asked her.
(Y/N) sighed and stretched her limps.
"He did, but it was easier. Because he is fucking strong. How am I supposed to beat someone like you?" she growled.
"Natasha does it every day," he pointed out.
(Y/N) stopped rubbing her sore neck and rolled her eyes.
"Yea, I know she is good at everything. Stupid perfect woman," she said.
Bucky knew what she was trying to do. It was not gonna work with him. She tried getting his reassurance. She was trying it for about the fifth time today. To get his sympathy. He only understood now what Steve meant. He was close to giving in. She gave him one of her innocent smiles, and if he didn't know what she was doing, he would have dropped everything then and there.
"Doll, not gonna work. I'm not Steve. I won't let you use powers or get out of training," he said with a cheeky smile and raised brows.
(Y/N) dropped her head. She swore under her breath. Good, that girl swore like a pirate. And he found it slightly endearing.
"Screw you," she said, "Sargent Barnes."
She placed her hands on her hips and huffed.
"In position," he laughed, "Recruit."
---
"No, she can't. She isn't ready yet. She wouldn't last five minutes in the field," Bucky said and puffed his chest out.
This was new for (Y/N) to see Bucky was always the one making himself smaller than he was. He didn't want to be seen. Or to seem less dangerous. But not now. He stood next to her chair with his legs firmly placed and his Arms crossed. Not with his hips jolted out. She had noticed the difference between Bucky Barnes and Sargent James Buchanan Barnes. She liked Bucky better.
"Are you sure? I need another asset," Steve said and looked between her and Bucky.
(Y/N) seemed furious. Bucky didn't believe she was ready for the mission. And he told Steve, in front of everyone. She felt embarrassed and humiliated.
"Yes, she isn't good enough yet," Bucky then said.
Or Sargent Bucky. She looked up at him. He only spared her a glance. She thought to see something that resembles regret. But then he looked away. So she let her eyes travel over the Avengers. All of them looked at her with pity. Without another word, she got up from her chair. She didn't feel the need to argue. Because the worst part was Bucky was right. It had been two months, and she still didn't learn it. Her head was held high as she stepped past the soldier and out of the door. She needed a drink.
"(Y/N)," Bucky yelled behind her.
He must have noticed that she was upset, but she continued walking. She didn't wanna see his face right now. She would punch it most likely.
"Wait," Bucky then said and grabbed her hand.
He had caught her just when she stepped foot into the kitchen. He grabbed her wrist to stop her. (Y/N) Spun around to the brunette man. If her look could kill someone, he would be dead. Very dead.
"Look, we'll train more. And then you can go on missions. I promise you. I just don't want you to go out there unprepared. Something could happen," Bucky tried to explain.
"I can do it. Why do I need this training? I could just get Wanda's power and use it in the field," she yelled.
Her eyes were fixed on his hand gripping her wrist. It was his metal arm; she was never bothered by it. She actually liked when it touched her while training. It cooled her down.
"You don't get it. What if you are in the field and none of us is near. I know the power manipulation doesn't hold for long. What if you are somewhere with no superpowered human? You are useless," he grunted.
He hated her stubbornness. Why couldn't she just listen like Steve promised him she would. Training her was exhausting because she didn't want to train. If she would actually put effort into it, she would be better.
(Y/N) gave him a look, and a sudden urge overtook her. She wanted to show him that she could beat him. She wasn't useless. She had survived without his help for so long, so she didn't need him now.
"Oh yeah?" she asked, and with that, she stretched out her other hand and touched his forehead.
Her skin touched his, and he felt a sudden rush go through him. Like something was pulling on him. And it wasn't because he touched her. Before he could register what she was doing, she had turned her hand so that she was gripping his arm, spun around and flipped him over her shoulder. Bucky landed on his back next to one of the kitchen chairs. Her left boot on his chest. She gave him defining smile. She had stolen his power. Well, he still had it, but they were equal now. His mouth opened slightly and closed again. What just happened?
"Sorry? What was that about being useless?" she asked teasingly.
Okay, if she was going to play it like that. Without warning, he kicked his foot against her other leg. She lost her balance, and Bucky rolled out from under her left foot. He jumped to his feet and stood opposite of her. They stared at each other. Both of them were in a defensive position. He couldn't help but notice that it looked exactly how he taught her. Not bad.
"Oh, Doll. You really wanna do this?" he asked her with a small smile.
(Y/N) Didn't feel the need to answer. She just stormed in his direction and threw a fist at him. He caught it midair and held it in his palm. And he felt the force she used to hit him. That was his strength in her. He spun her around. The girls back was pressed against his chest. He had one arm pinned to her chest and the other around her neck, where he applied light pressure. He could smell her perfume and feel her rapid breathing.
"You would be dead just about now," he mumbled into her ear.
"Not so much," she grunted and stomped her heel to his foot. Bucky let her go in shock.
Bucky realised now this was different. This wasn't like training. They were fighting, and she was intent on winning. (Y/N) spun around, and then she grabbed a vase and threw it at him. He ducked it in shock while it shattered against the white wall behind him. She was angry. This wasn't fun for her. Bucky felt bad for a split second, then he remembered that none of this was his fault. Slowly he got up from his position. He studied her face. (Y/N)'s eyes looked more like slits and not as bright as usual.
"Have I  ever told you how insane you are?" he mumbled.
She huffed out air from her nose. They stared at each other for another second before both of them fully charged at each other.
--
"Au," (Y/N) moaned while Bruce stitched up the cut on her forehead.
He wasn't feeling sorry for her, that much she could see. She sat at one of the barstools. The one that was still standing. With a bruised lip and a cut on her forehead. But she still had Bucky's ability, so she did already feel it healing. Bucky sat on another chair where Tony was fixing his metal arm, where she rammed a knife into. It had gotten out of hand really fast. Some of the decor in the room was broken, while Bucky and (Y/N) were both hurt. And (Y/N) felt like a madwoman. She wasn't sure what came over her. She was just so angry, and Bucky being Bucky made it worse. And now, she felt ashamed. She needed to apologise to Bucky, and she hated that.
"Normal people just have sex to blow off their steam, but you try to kill each other," Sam said as he cleaned up some shards.
"We didn't try to kill each other," (Y/N) mumbled, her eyes cast down.
She hissed when Bruce knotted the thread. Great, that would scar. She didn't dare to look at the former Winter Soldier. But she heard Tony's tool shut off.
"You two need to clean this and get this issue between you out of the way," Tony said, pointing at them.
The rest of the Avengers left the room quietly. (Y/N) gave Bucky a shy look. He seemed just as embarrassed as her. So she decided to start.
"I'm sorry," she mumbled, just as Bucky said the same.
Bucky looked up at her. He studied her face for a second before he got up and took a careful step closer. Only now (Y/N) noticed that she could hear his heartbeat, courtesy of his own power. It was steady and slow.
"Look, I know you are frustrated that you can't go on missions yet. I am not refusing it because I want to hurt you, quite the opposite, actually. I don't want you to go out there and hurt yourself. I want you to be ready and be able to take care of yourself," he explained slowly.
(Y/N) stopped playing with her fingers and raised her head with a sigh. She hopped off the chair and met Bucky in the middle.
"I know," she said, "I am sorry I threw a plate at you."
Bucky laughed, and it was like music to her ears. This wasn't new. She always enjoyed his laugh.
"You know, sometimes I wonder why we fight so much," he then said.
(Y/N) joined his laugh and decided to just be helpful for a second. She grabbed a broom and continued sweeping.
"I think it is actually because we are very alike," she told him and shrugged.
Bucky shook his head at her and started placing the chairs upright. He couldn't believe what she was saying. (Y/N) was very different from him. She was pure. As stupid as it sounded, she was. Her heart was good, and she loved people with all her heart. She lived in the sun, while Bucky was a man with a dark past and a jumbled memory.
"No, we disagree constantly," he said.
(Y/N) was about to be annoyed with him, but then she saw his wink and knew he was joking. And then she laughed. This was weird. Bucky and her joking.
"Funny," she commented.
"I can be fun if I want to," he said with a cheeky smile.
(Y/N) shook her head over the man's behaviour. And even if she didn't want it to, a genuine smile slipped on her lips. She watched him for a second. Maybe she and Bucky could have fun as well and not just fight.
"Are you staring at me?" Bucky suddenly asked her and lifted his head.
She tried covering her blush, but not so lucky.
"Uhm, no... Just continue cleaning," she mumbled and concentrated on her sweeping.

But that’s not at all the case with this rice and pasta cooker, as it has the capacity to hold up to 12 cups of rice in a single cycle.

Are Microwave Rice Cookers Any Good?
Microwave rice cookers have a host of benefits to their name, some of them not found in traditional rice cookers. To help you make the decision, here are a few advantages of having these types of kitchen tools at your disposal:
Convenience
Cooking rice in a traditional rice cooker, no matter how advanced, will take a longer time than cooking in a microwave rice cooker. The simple design of these appliances cuts your cooking time almost in half. For a budget-friendly and versatile device, that’s an incredible feat.
Easy to Clean
Most, if not all, microwave rice cookers are actually dishwasher safe. This makes cleaning up a lot easier. Since most of these kitchen appliances are no more than a removable lid and their pot, you won’t have to worry about removing small and often hard to clean parts such as a steam release vent.
Energy Efficient
Since these devices take less time to cook rice, chances are, you’ll be saving more energy by using them.
Versatile
The plastic pot of the cooker can be used multiple ways, such as storing food.
Are Plastic Microwave Rice Cookers Safe?
We’re all used to cooking rice in stainless steel products, whether that is a dedicated rice cooker or a pot. This is because stainless steel is proven to be very safe for cooking rice, as it is less likely to release harmful gases and chemicals when heated.
But that doesn’t mean other cookware materials are all completely unsafe. The plastic used in microwave rice cookers is BPA-free and, of course, microwave-friendly as well as dishwasher-safe. These products are built with the utmost care and safety of their users in mind.
How Do You Cook Rice in a Microwave Rice Cooker?
Plenty of users who start cooking in a microwave rice cooker expect the process to be the same as making rice in a traditional cooker. This, however, is not the case! As a microwave cooks differently than a stove or an electronic cooker, the method of cooking will also be different.
If it’s your first time using these products, the trick is to be a little patient. Anyone used to traditional electric cookware will struggle a little at first, but that is completely normal.
The trick to getting perfect microwave rice is to get the ratio of water to grains right, as well as know the proper heat setting.
Wash your grains in the inner bowl or a dedicated washer. Take two handfuls and rub them together to get rid of starch and dirt. Then, once the water has turned murky, remove it. Repeat this step until the water stays clear.
Add your water into the pot. Depending on your unit’s capacity and the amount of grains you add in, use the following ratio:
1 cup grains = 1.5 cups water
3 cups grains = 4.5-5 cups water
5 cups grains = 6.5-7 cups water
Secure your cooker, making sure your lid is tightly locked. Then, put it inside your microwave on high heat.
Once done, let your rice stand for 5 minutes before serving. Fluff with a fork and serve using the included rice spoon.

Rice Cooker Reviews: Let’s Go Over Each Microwave Rice Cooker
Best Overall: Prep Solutions by Progressive Microwaveable Rice Cooker

Our Overall Rating:
 4.6/5
We’ve named the Prep Solutions unit the best microwave rice cooker overall for its versatility, multifunctionality, and incredible affordability that does not in any way sacrifice quality. Made with the highest grade BPA-free plastic and priced at below $16, this unit has earned its top spot.
Let’s start with the body. Many microwave rice cookers aren’t built with a lockable lid, making them prone to spillage. This one does. The easy-lock lid ensures that the water doesn’t boil over in the middle of the cooking process, whether you’re making a few servings of rice or cooking pasta. This system also ensures the cooked rice comes out perfectly every time.
As a 3-in-1 device, this unit comes with a pasta draining insert, a vegetable steamer insert, and multiple measuring cups and spoons that can be used for grains, chicken, meat, pasta, veggies, and so much more. All of these are made with BPA-free plastic and are top rack dishwasher-safe.
Lastly, this microwave rice cooker skips out on the major flaw its lesser counterparts have: a cooking bowl that can hold no more than 2-3 cups in a single cycle. If you have a family that requires more than that, have no fear! This model comes with an astounding 12-cup capacity, so no member of the household is left wanting for more. Who needs other cookware when you have this one at your disposal?

Best Durable Microwave Rice Cooker: Joseph Joseph 45002 M
Our Overall Rating:
 4.6/5
A favorite among newbie cooks (or, let’s face it, lazy ones), the Joseph Joseph microwave rice cooker is our choice for the most durable rice cooker on this list. You’ll see that this product comes with a 2 liter cooking pot, a colander, measuring cup, and a multi-purpose rice paddle as well. Unlike others that only come with a cooking pot to be chucked in the microwave, this one adds a little extra care for the grains to be cooked.
Despite its apparent simplicity, the Joseph Joseph 45002 M rice cooker still manages to incorporate thoughtfulness and minimalism in its design. Take a look at its rice paddle, for example, which doubles as the lock for the lid.
You won’t have to worry about cleanup with this product, either. Unlike electronic rice cookers that have to be wiped down before put in the dishwasher, this one can be tossed in right away. See what we mean by “lazy” cooker?
Apart from that, you get all the wonderful benefits of microwave rice cookers. This one can cook rice in as little as 15 minutes, and the measuring cup is there to make sure you get perfectly cooked rice each time.
Pros and Cons of the Joseph Joseph
ProsCons✔️ Cooks rice in 15 minutes ✔️ Microwaveable ✖️ No controllable functions and features ✖️ Lack of menu settings and cooking options

Best Cool-touch Cooker: Sistema Microwave Collection Rice Cooker
Our Overall Rating:
 3.6/5
At first glance, this rice cooker doesn’t look like a rice cooker at all. But its ingenious design becomes apparent once you use it. The Sistema Microwave Collection rice cooker comes with an inner steamer basket that actually stays cool even as the food inside is heated so you can lift it out easily. The locks surrounding the lid stay cool, too, so you can easily open it up after you’re done cooking your rice, veggies, fish or meats. This is why it’s our choice for the best cool-touch device.
Did we mention this rice cooker has a 13.5-cup capacity? It’s not some sort of backup rice cooker; it can actually provide for the whole family. Easily make enough cooked rice for the house in one go!
Much like an electronic rice cooker, there’s a steam vent in the middle of the lid that ensures splatter-free heating. No matter what you’re making, it’s going to stay secure in the container. Afterwards, cleaning is as easy as chucking this baby in the dishwasher and pressing a few buttons. Made with BPA-free and phthalate-free plastic, you can even use this rice cooker to store food when it’s not in use.

If you’re into sleek microwave cookers, the Pampered Chef one might be for you. Don’t worry, it’s still available on Amazon despite being discontinued by the brand. This all-black rice cooker is stain-resistant and non-stick, so your rice won’t be a hassle to remove from the sides.
Its modest 9-cup rice capacity is perfect for a sizable household, so no family member is left wanting. While we gave it the title of best minimalist microwave rice steamer for its beautiful design, perhaps its best feature is the quality of food it’s able to produce. The rice comes out so fluffy and so well-done each time, you’ll barely notice it was microwaved.
Not only that, but we tested it with a few other foods too. Potatoes, vegetables, and fish all came out wonderfully cooked and in record time. The double-lock lid was effective in preventing any spillage. The cleanup was easy and stress-free. Plus, if you’re running out of recipes, the instruction manual actually comes with a few to help you whip up a new favorite meal.

Best Simple Microwave Rice Cooker: MaxiAids Microwave Rice Cooker

Our Overall Rating:
 4/5
If you don’t like your cookware to be all frills and fuss, then you’ll find this microwave rice cooker perhaps the most appealing of them all. Its design is a simple bright red and a simple clear plastic lid with locks. Even its Amazon listing name is simple: “Microwave Rice Cooker.”
Sticking to the essentials, this product includes a measuring cup and a rice paddle. The plastic material that makes up the body and the lid is odorless and BPA-free, though there’s no indication in the reviews of whether it’s dishwasher-safe or not. Either way, cleanup is a breeze because the bowl is completely non-stick.
The lack of a rice steamer, a pressure chamber plate, a pasta measurer, or even a recipe book might be a turn-off for some. But if you’re the kind of person who prefers a dedicated device that sticks to the basics, you’re looking at the right product. Besides, you can still cook different varieties, including brown rice, jasmine, and sushi, and come out with fluffy rice each time.
Pros and Cons of the MaxiAids

Our Overall Rating:

There’s definitely a microwave rice cooker for everyone. Those who don’t mind spending a few bucks more on a considerably costly product are sure to love this rice cooker. The 12-cup capacity microwave rice cooker from Tupperware is a solid, dependable unit made of BPA-free heat-resistant plastic. You can easily make 12 cups of cooked rice in one go!
At its core, it’s a foolproof cooker that is convenient, quick, and dishwasher-safe to boot. Its lid includes lid locks that can be folded onto the base to provide you with a better grip.
One drawback is the lack of a rice spoon and a separate measuring cup. However, there are mark measurements inside the bowl that help you measure the capacity perfectly so as to make the perfect batch of warm, fluffy rice every cycle. If you’re fond of storing grains and other food in the fridge, this is one of the household items that are built to be fridge and freezer safe, so you can store food longer and heat them at a later time.

Our Overall Rating:
 3/5
Our pick for the best healthy cooker is none other than the Home-X microwave rice cooker. It may seem simple on the outside, but the pressure chamber on this item ensures your rice is not only fluffy, but healthy, too.
It comes with a locking lid to prevent any spillage. Whether you’re making rice, soup, or reheating this morning’s breakfast, the locking lid keeps everything in.
The Home-X also has the capacity to make 10 cups of cooked rice and comes with a BPA-free and dishwasher-safe rice paddle. The body and lid are likewise BPA-free and dishwasher-safe, so cleanup is as simple as tossing everything in the dishwasher. You won’t have to worry about residue, because the inside is non-stick.
Pros and Cons of the Home-X Cooker
ProsCons✔️ Comes with a lockable lid to prevent overflow ✔️ Can make fluffy rice each time ✔️ Non-stick inner bowl✖️ Lack of advanced features

Best Small Cooker: Home & Appliance
Our Overall Rating:
 4/5
Rounding up our rice cooker buying guide is the Home & Appliance microwave cooker. This adorable cooker only has the capacity for 2 cups of grains, which is why it’s our pick for the best small product. Built for couples or singles living alone, this little unit still packs a punch.
We might think a large device is what everyone needs, but there are a million advantages to having something small, for a change. One thing is it takes up less space, a perk for people with not much in the way of kitchen space, such as dormers.
Its sleek, all-black design makes it look much more expensive than it actually is. Plus, it comes with its own paddle and measuring cup so you never go wrong when trying to make rice, soup, oatmeal, and more!
Pros and Cons of the Home & Appliance Cooker
ProsCons✔️ Perfect for couples or solo dwellers ✔️ Ideal for those with a small kitchen space ✔️ Modern and compact design ✖️ Not suitable for large households

How to Wake up Early & How to get up Early? | Waking up at 5 am
“There is no sunrise so beautiful that it is worth waking me up to see it.”
Wondering how to wake up early?
Have you ever questioned yourself that generally how many sunsets have you lost? Countless?
It is not only sunset which you are losing on but on several things.
Waking up early is a blessing for you to conquer your entire day.
I used to be a night owl. Now I do not even need an alarm for waking up at 4.
What changed. I learned. I learnt from the experts.
I invested in myself for a better life.
I have taken several audio books, best ebooks and courses.
I loved the investments because when I see myself now: I have just more time for everything.
I used to rant that why God has just given 24 hours in a day.
My to-do list always used to get shifted on the next day.
And most importantly I was compromising fun in my life.
If you are asking yourself that why you need to become more productive then the answer is :
Because you deserve success in your career, and health in your lovely relationships.
If you want to live more intentionally then do check this productivity bundle.
 Back to this blogpost.
But sadly it is not an easy peasy process, the rather true effort is required from your end.
This post will help you to catch the sunrise, to become mindful, and to slay your goals.
This post will help you so that by the end of the day you do not stare yourself helplessly in the mirror, recalling the disappointments of the day.
Let’s dig in.
PS : Don’t forget to grab the freebie at the end of post, specially crafted for you  !
Benefit of waking up early?
When I was studying political philosophy I came across several common human motives that drive our lives.
Those motives are so common that we tend to ignore them completely.
If I question you, why do you do what you do? You will surely have thousands of answers to it.
The same is the case with me.
But the ultimate answer is to FEEL GOOD.
We do everything in our lives to feel good. The utmost pleasure as Machiavelli framed it.
Every small action is controlled by how we are going to feel.
Interesting and very important.
The problem here is that switching to the morning routine, out of sudden, nowhere offers the experience of feeling good.
Initially waking up super early goes against the intrinsic nature of feeling good or being joyful.
But once you train yourself for it, there is no joyous feeling than conquering the gigantic milestone when half the world is sleeping.
Remember the point here is that you will not initially “feel good” and find it hard.
But this feeling will drastically shift if you:
Commit to wake up early & make it a habit
Conquer great milestones
Become productive
Be able to make more time of those 24 hours for your family, friends and loved ones
So this means waking up early is of the root cause of feeling good and of happiness?
You got me, girl!
If you want to other 56 drastic benefits of waking up early then below are the related reads.
How to practically wake up early?
You need to catch the cycle. The cycle of creating habits. Bear in mind that habit is a loop.
How to create that loop? An extremely simple form of RAR.
Reminder, Action, and Reward.
Do you need to identify each ingredient in the formula for creating the loop? I am simply saying:
the alarm going off can be a reminder,
the action has to be turning off the alarm!
the reward? Your favorite shake/meal [choose it for yourself but please get creative as the reward has to shake you off the bed! Don’t make your reward as brushing your teeth! ]
You need to spend a good chunk of time making the RAR formula workable. You need to decide the loop. And remember it is a loop thus no elimination is possible.
The best part is that you can use this formula for creating any habit in your life.
For now, our habit is waking up early. This loop is effective why? as it becomes your automatic response because of repetition.
The most common trap which we all fall into is the 10-minute trap where we use alarms in between.
Yes, the kind of mercy time. And guess what happens after that mercy time?
You eye yourself with such mercy that never let you hop out of the bed!
You can cater to such traps by installing any wake-up app like the sleep cycle until you master the RAR formula!
Step 2 of waking up at 5 am:
The second step in waking up early is creating a morning routine.
Let’s continue from the reward we left with.
Now your reward becomes your Reminder
Reminder: Get the reward
Action: Have 20 minutes of your Alone time(i will tell you why this alone time is fuel in your life)
Reward: Check phone notifications
You can adjust the time period of the 20 minutes as per your need. It is a blessing for you. This task is long enough so you can complete it and short enough so it transforms into a habit.
Questioning what to do in these magical minutes. I call these the extra minutes in which life gifts me.
Why? This time is of self-reflection.
This is the time where the subconscious mind is more active than the conscious mind.
And if you have been reading this blog then you know that the subconscious mind has infinite power.
It is connected with the higher self and has all the potential answers which you are seeking elsewhere.
If you want to know what my 20 minutes look like then follow these 4 steps. (there is no restriction, you can add as many steps by extending these magical minutes in 40)
Plug your fav song for inspiration & enjoy the sunrise
Visualize
Journal
Plan
Before we jump into step 3 let’s give time as to why visualization, journaling, and planning has the potential of transforming your life.
I am a true believer in the law of attraction.
I have manifested countless things through this natural process that exist to make any wish come true.
People are already practicing the law of attraction in their lives, but they are practicing it unconsciously.
The day they become conscious of the process, magic will happen.
No one denies the law of gravity, but the law of attraction receives little acknowledgment. WHY? Because We do not have any 9.81 to support the law.
If one needs proof, one has to experience it. No other way!
And the good news is that both visualization and journaling are extremely powerful tools for practicing the law of attraction.
When you visualize, you are in essence setting a clear intention.
You are telling the universe (the God, or higher intelligence you believe in).
By visualization, you are transforming your thoughts into feelings. Simply close your eyes and think of your desires.
Think about the emotions attached. Feel the want. Experience joy.
It is a conscious meditation.
Then you begin journaling.
I am much of a fan of journaling for manifestation.
I DO it for getting answers when I am confused and I get them.
I do journaling to affirm that my goals are getting accomplished. When I was 12, yes I used to do diaries, but it never helped me. There is no right or wrong way of journaling but surely there is an effective way.
A way through which you could manifest what you desire. I have worked my sweat in developing the triple G’s technique. So what is the point?
Use my proven way of personal & professional success or deploy any method which brings you close to your goal.
Write in detailed what you have visualized, make your wish more concrete
You can simply journal the affirmations like “I am achieving all the goals”
Lastly, Make your to-do list and write them in the order of priority.
Step 3 of waking up at 5am:
Now, this is the step where you actually conquer your mornings. Always start with the hardest tasks.
Remember, that your brain will tempt you to get started with the easiest task first.
But that is the trap. Sometimes our brain can become our worst enemy. Why do I say so? Because it is lazy.
It works on connections and patterns. When we decide to accomplish the hardest, it will signal reluctance.
It will be least willing if you will do something completely new. (as there will be no pattern for it to follow)
It will scare you before you even start. What is the solution?
Become aware of this threat.
Laugh at its suggestions. Do you know what it will suggest?
It will ask you to spend the first two precious morning hours checking email? If it does that you question your brain . . . are you serious?!
The fear of doing the hardest will go the moment you START it
Just start!
Step 4 of waking up at 5am:
The final step to waking up early is to create an evening routine.
Remember your evening routine is capable of spilling the milk on your efforts. Thus, you need to pay attention to your latter-day.
Your evening routine will be actually driving your personal goals. So customize it accordingly.
Munching till 12, getting entertained till late night would not let you complete the habit loop.
So what is your RAR for the evening?
Reminder: You should have an alarm for 9 pm
Action: Shut everything and prepare your bed
Reward: Treat yourself with a good book
Reward here can be anything. It could be an episode of a series (remember not a complete series!!!)
Anything that you can spend your 30-40 minutes to. If you ask what my reward looks like then:
I generally read a book (mostly think & grow rich . . . yes I am a fan of re-reading)
I journal again for manifestation with the techniques I am obsessed with (hardly takes me 5 minutes).
Put my phone on the airplane mode
Sleep yeyii finally!
Key Points of how to get up early
Now, remember that you are making a system for yourself.
The steps which I have mentioned are tracking your goals while giving you plenty of fun time to relax.
Why do I call it a system? Because now everything is fed into your mind.
It is fed that you have to wake up early, spend 20 minutes mindfully, dig into the tasks, and then live a rewarding evening.
I know what is floating around your head. It has to do with the To-do list.
Don’t worry if you could not achieve whatever you wrote in the planner. After all, no one has ever died with an empty to-do list . . .
YOU WILL ALWAYS have things left, undone. It is not finishing the endline. It is about participating in that race.
It is about competing with your best self.
It is simply about running for a fulfilled life while actually living. (it is not a mindless chase, where you do not prioritize other things)
Yes, there will be times when someone will come over.
There will be times where you will have to attend certain events. What to do?
Prepare for those times by strengthening your loop habit of waking up early.
Even if you rarely have to sleep at 12, even then wake up as per your routine.
Don’t worry as you can compensate for the missed hours by taking a nap in the afternoon.

Hey, y'all! My birthday is April 28! I would really love something fluffy. Really into fake relationships at the moment. Any rating will do! :)
Tumblr media
Happy Birthday @booksrockmyface! We hope you’re having a fantastic day and just to make it extra sweet, @finnicko-loves-anniec has crafted an extra delicious slice of Everlark, just for you!
“Out!” The door hit her in the shoulder as she pulled it open. Katniss ignored the pain. “I said out!”
Gale brushed a piece of hair behind her ear, his fingertips skimming along her cheek as he did so. She pushed his hand away. “Come on, babe, let’s talk about this.”
“You can ‘talk about this’ with your other babe.” Katniss hated air quotes with a passion. Right now, she hated him enough to ignore that. “I said out.”
She heard a door squeak down the hall. Lazy shits in management had promised to fix that months ago. Katniss glared at the man who had dared to poke his head into the hallway. “Not you, Mellark. You stay in.” He didn’t budge. Was nobody listening to her today?
“Katniss, I can –“
“No, you can’t. Please leave.”
His shoulders slumped, and he moved toward the door. Katniss counted the steps as he went. Just one more, and then she could…
He stopped in the doorway, two hundred pounds of him stopping her from shutting him out. “I’ll call you tomorrow.”
“No.”
Gale was finally outside. “Katniss, we need to talk about this.”
“You can call me all you want. That doesn’t mean I’m going to answer.” She shut the door and clicked the deadbolt into place.
It took ten minutes for panic to set in. Katniss unlocked her phone, stared at Gale’s contact information, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Cheaters neve change, and clean breaks were better. No sense in bringing him back into her life when she would have to kick him out again in a few days.
That’s what rationality told her, anyway. And if her Prim’s wedding wasn’t in two days, she would be repeating those marvelously rational affirmations to herself in between bites of Ben & Jerry’s. Instead, she had a size-four bridesmaid dress that she needed to fit into on Saturday and a hell of a mess to get herself out of.
Katniss wasn’t an expert in these matters, but six months seemed like a long time to date someone without introducing them to the family. It wasn’t the kind of thing that set off alarm bells – after all, Gale had brought her home to his mother two and a half months in, and with Prim in South Carolina finishing up her residency and Mom in Portland doing, well, whatever Mom did, getting everyone together would be a logistical nightmare. The wedding provided the perfect solution. Gale’s crazy work schedule meant he couldn’t get time off for the rehearsal dinner, and the rest of the week had been a scheduling mess for everyone else, so they’d settled on the wedding.
So now she got to decide between pasting on a happy face and calling Gale or having her breakup be the elephant in the room at her sister’s wedding. Shit. Why couldn’t he have waited another week to cheat on her?
She jumped at a knock on the door. “Go away, Gale.”
“It’s not Gale.” Peeta. Hadn’t she told him to stay out of this?
Suddenly aware that it was four AM and she had been angry-crying in yesterday’s makeup for a good portion of the last six hours, Katniss fumbled. “Hey, Peeta.” Please don’t want to come in.
“I was on my way to work and saw that your light was still on. You okay?”
“Sure.” Wow, that sounded convincing.
Thank God, he was willing to accept her lies. “Okay. Let me know if there’s anything I can do. Hope today’s better for you.” The forces that ran the universe should really let her know what she’d done in her last life to deserve such a nice, if clueless, guy for a neighbor.
“Thanks. You too.” The idea followed half a second later. She ran to the door and pulled it open. “Peeta, I thought of something!”
His eyebrows rose when he saw her. Way to flatter a girl. “Katniss? Are you, um, I mean -”
“Will you pretend to be Gale and take me to my sister’s wedding on Saturday?” Three heartbeats of silence told her that sounded just as crazy to him as it did to her.
To his credit, Peeta didn’t run away. He checked his watch instead. “I’ve got a few minutes before I really need to head. Care to give me some background?”
“Come in. Can I get you something to drink?” There might be twenty balled-up used tissues on the couch, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t pretend to be a good hostess.
“Not right now, thanks, but I’d like to keep my options open depending on what you’ve got to say.”
“That’s fair.”
“Darius Constantinides.”
“Darius Constantine-ides.”
Katniss forced back a groan. Shouldn’t he have taken Greek during divinity school? “No, repeat after me: Darius Constantinides.” She slowed it down as much as possible, and this time, Father Rose managed to get it right. “Do you want to write that down or something?” she prodded.
“I’ll remember.”
“I think you should write it down just in case.” This shouldn’t be grating on her so much. It wasn’t her name, and Darius was laid-back enough that he probably wouldn’t care, but Prim was only getting married once. She deserved for that day to be perfect, and Katniss had already screwed it up enough.
Father Rose still hadn’t made any move to write down the correct pronunciation. “Well?”
“Katniss, once I know the name, I know it.” He had the kindly old man thing down. “Weddings are stressful, but there’s no need for you to worry.”
“I need this to be perfect.” Except for the fact that instead of her now ex-boyfriend, she was bringing her handsome neighbor pretending to be her boyfriend as her date. That could be less-than-perfect, but only because the other alternatives were even worse.
He smiled. “Nothing on this earth is perfect.”
“The wedding will be.” Had she just threatened a priest? Katniss needed an out. “I’m going to check on Prim. She said she hadn’t heard back from the florist yet.”
She really needed to get back to the gym sometime. Half-walking, half-running from a seventy-year-old shouldn’t take this much out of her.
She straightened his tie. “The green’s a nice touch.”
“I thought it’d go with your dress. You look lovely, by the way.”
“You don’t need to go into boyfriend mode yet, but thank you.” Katniss gave him a once-over. “You’re looking pretty good yourself.”
Understatement of the century. She had quietly admired him in his bakery t-shirts and cozy sweaters for years, but Katniss had never given any thought to how Peeta might fill out a suit. She imagined she’d make up for lost time over the next few weeks.
“How touchy-feely are we going to be?”
“What are you comfortable with? Gale and I have been dating – dated,” she corrected herself, “for a little over six months. Anything’s on the table as far as I’m concerned.”
A slow, sexy smirk spread over his face.
She rolled her eyes. “Not like that. Just, y’know, hand-holding or hugging or maybe some kissing. Nothing they couldn’t stick a G rating on.”
“Of course. It’s your sister’s wedding, and anything more would be inappropriate. Where would you get that idea?”
She huffed, then, before she could talk herself out of it, Katniss got up on her tiptoes and kissed his cheek. It never hurt to catch your opponent (or teammate, in this case) off guard.
She could feel his eyes on her. Katniss looked over to where he sat with Aunt Edith, a great-aunt on their mother’s side who Katniss had believed hated everybody before she saw Peeta chatting with her before the ceremony started. There was blushing. And smiles. When Katniss ‘broke up’ with him in a few days, Peeta would be lucky not to find Aunt Edith on his doorstep.
He caught her watching him and grinned. Heat crept up her neck and splotched her cheeks pink as she returned his smile.
“Primrose Eileen Everdeen,” Father Rose continued, dragging Katniss’ attention back to the scene in front of her. “Do you, Primrose Everdeen, take this man Darius Constantinides to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
There could never be any doubt of her response. “I do.”
Katniss was not a woman who cried at weddings. In fact, she was a woman who rarely cried at anything at all. Now, though, watching her baby sister saying her vows, so happy to be spending the rest of her life with a man who was just as thrilled to spend his life with her…
No. Keep it together.
“I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
Thirty seconds. If you can last the next thirty seconds, you’re good to go.
Then the veil came up, and with that, Katniss gave that waterproof mascara a run for its money.
“Gale, it’s so nice to meet you.”
“You too, Mrs. Everdeen.” Peeta would be the type to use last names with his in-laws. Not that her mother would ever be Peeta’s mother-in-law, since this was definitely a one-night engagement, but still.
“Eileen, please.”
She saw Prim edging towards them, Darius in tow. They wore matching smiles, and both glowed with a kind of contentment that Katniss would have thought kind of gross any other day.
Katniss rose to greet them, pulling Prim in for a hug the second she was close enough. “Every time I see you, I’m amazed by how pretty you look!”
“I’m glad you’re surprised.”
She pulled away to glare at her sister. “That’s not what I meant, and you know it.”
Prim shot her a grin that was pure mischief and turned to Peeta. “Nice to meet you, Gale. I’m Prim.”
Peeta introduced himself – she really ought to have done that herself – and the five of them fell into easy conversation. That in and of itself was odd. Nothing involving her mother was ever easy. The party continued around them, strains of music and conversation occasionally floating into their little bubble.
They had just gotten onto the subject of work, a dangerous topic, since she had told Mom and Prim that Gale was an engineer, and Peeta didn’t seem at all like the engineer type, when Prim elbowed her in the ribs.
“It’s your favorite song!” True enough, Doris Day’s voice carried over the room, begging her lover to dream little dreams of her. “Go dance!”
One couldn’t very well disobey a bride on her wedding day.
“Y’know, I’m not sure that my family is going to believe I dumped you,” she said once she was sure Mom and Prim were out of earshot.
“Sure you’re not just looking for excuses to keep me around?” He gave her a spin, pulling her closer at the end.
“I meant that the story will have to be that you broke up with me.”
“I know what you meant.” He paused for a few seconds. “But I wouldn’t mind not being gotten rid of.”
She shook her head. “I think there was one too many negatives for me to follow that.”
“I like your family.”
“They like you.”
“And I like you. A lot.”
“Oh.” Katniss hadn’t considered that possibility. Actually, she had, many times, but it was always a hypothetical, a fantasy to visit when everything else went wrong. Here, now, the dream was brought to life, tactile with his hand on her waist, their bodies so close she could feel the heat radiating off him.
They slowed as the song reached its end, her hand moved from his shoulder to his cheek, gently bringing him down until their lips touched. That, she felt, was answer enough.
Two text messages from Prim greeted her the next morning.
I always thought your neighbor was hot. Good for you.
You’ll have to let me know what happened with Gale sometime.
She put the phone away and snuggled a little deeper into Peeta’s arms. Explanations could wait.

How to Extend Your Wifi Network With an Old Router
It’s the most irritating scenario: You set up your router in your new house or apartment, and your wifi is working flawlessly, until you find your downloads (or streaming) screech to a halt in that area that’s just outside your router’s range—like the exact spot where you watch Apple TV on the couch, or stream music at your workbench, or binge movies in bed.
There are plenty of tricks you can use to squeak a little more range out of your existing equipment. If your networking gear is old, or you don’t want to deal with a lot of hassle, I normally recommend buying something new: a better router that supports the fastest wireless speeds your devices can handle, a wifi mesh system with a dedicated backhaul connection, or even a super-cheap wifi extender if you just need a bit more range for simpler tasks.
If you don’t feel like spending a penny more for your setup, you have an alternative: using an old router to extend (or build onto) your primary router’s wireless signal. You know the one—that trusty, retired workhorse you’ve kept around in case of emergency (or from laziness).
Instead of letting it collect more dust, you can repurpose the old router to help boost the range of your wireless network at home. This won’t be a perfect solution, especially if it’s some older wireless-n router that you’re trying to force into your newer wireless-ac world, but it can at least save you some cash and possibly give you better wireless performance than a simpler extender. Waste not, want not?
Option 1: A new access point
The best thing you can do with an old wifi router you’re no longer using is to convert it into a simple wireless access point. So long as your house or apartment is wired for Ethernet (or you don’t mind stringing cables), it’s an easy way to give an area wireless connectivity that doesn’t already have it (or has a weak signal).
To get started, connect your older router (WAN port) to your newer router (LAN port), and connect a device to your older router. Pull up your older router’s settings—more on how to do that here—and look around for some kind of “access point mode,” as it’s commonly called. Depending on the router, this might even be called “bridge mode,” which is a confusing term that we’ll address later in this article.
Screenshot: Netgear
What you’re trying to do is disable the router’s DHCP server—how connected devices receive an internal IP address from your router. If you don’t, you’re committing the networking sin of running a router inside a router, which might cause issues for whatever you’re doing on devices connected to your second router.
To note: Performing this step will change the IP address you use to access your router’s settings via your browser, if you went that route. You’ll also need to reset your router and switch the Ethernet cable from its WAN port to one of its LAN ports. To find your older router’s new IP address, pull up your newer router’s configuration and look for the section where your your router lists connected devices. Your older router should be one of them.
(You can also probably set your router’s IP address manually on its configuration screen, if you’d rather remember it that way.)
Place your router in a perfect place for wherever you’re planning to expand your wireless capabilities, assuming you have a long-enough Ethernet cable, or in-wall cabling.
It’s convenient to set up your old router’s wireless networks with the same SSID and password as your existing wireless networks. I like giving them different names than my existing wifi networks (same password), because then I can decide which access point to connect to—the newer router or the older router.
Why? Because your devices are probably stupid and cling to a lower-strength wireless signal for way too long, and your older router likely doesn’t support any features for bouncing devices with poor signals off the access point. Using separate SSIDs for your different routers means you’ll have to make sure you’re connected to the right wifi network if you’re moving around a lot between the two, but that’s a small issue to deal with for the performance benefits. You don’t want your device to cling to your older router’s so-so signal if your newer router’s faster wifi network is a better option (or vice versa).
Option 2: Use your router’s wireless repeater mode
Look through your router’s settings (or manual) to determine if it has some kind of “wireless repeater,” “extender,” or “bridge” mode—yes, it’s that bridge word again, which router manufacturers love to use to mean different things.
If you’re not sure if you’re selecting the correct mode or not, see if your older router’s manual (or the description of the feature within the router’s UI) indicates that this mode will allow your older router to connect to another router using its wireless signal. Most importantly, your older router will also need to be able to accept wireless connections from devices.
(Sometimes, when router manufacturers say “wireless bridge,” they mean connecting two routers together over wifi without allowing any other wireless clients to connect. In this scenario, any devices you connected to your older router via an Ethernet cable would join your larger network.)
If you think about it, this setup replaces the Ethernet cable of the previous step—the one connecting your new router and your old router—with a wireless signal. This kind of a setup also comes with one important caveat: If you run your old router as a wifi extender, you’re going to cut your performance in half for connected devices. LearnTomato describes why:
“There is a downside to using a wireless bridge in repeater mode and WDS mode. If the secondary router retransmits the wireless signal (instead of connecting client computers with a wire), the wireless throughput in the secondary building will be cut in half. Each transmission is known as a “hop”. The second wireless hop is the one that takes the hit. […]
Basically, wireless clients connected to the second router will not enjoy the same performance as the wireless clients connected to the first router. Why? Because the transmitter in the second router has to do twice the work. It must first receive the signal from the primary router, and then retransmit the signal to wireless clients.”
This is why you’re always better off using an Ethernet connection, where possible, to connect access points to your primary router. A wireless bridge might be more convenient, but your speeds can suffer.
If your router isn’t an extender, make it one
There’s a good chance that your router, old (or cheap) as it is, doesn’t have any options built into its UI that allow you to use it as an access point or an extender. Resist the urge to drop this router in the recycling bin, because you still have a chance to bend it to your will. You’ll have to flash it with a third-party firmware—the software you’d interact with to change its settings—which can help you unlock features you couldn’t previously play with.
I like using DD-WRT myself, but you can also try OpenWRT or Tomato—or even AdvancedTomato, if you want a prettier GUI. You’ll have to do a little digging to see which firmware works with your specific router (if any), and know that you router might have different versions, too. (This is something you’ll probably cross-reference against each third-party firmware by consulting the label on the bottom or rear of your router.)
It’s important to get the right firmware, and the right version of that firmware, for your specific router, as flashing your router with incorrect firmware could cause a world of issues that might take a lot more time to fix. You can check support for your exact router here:
Since I’m practicing this on a TP-Link Archer C7, I decided to go with good ol’ DD-WRT. I started by looking at the bottom of my router to confirm that I had hardware version “v2, and I then downloaded the corresponding firmware (factory-to-ddwrt.bin) from DD-WRT’s site.
Screenshot: David Murphy ((DD-WRT)
I then jumped into the regular web interface for the Archer C7—by typing in the typical 192.168.0.1 into my web browser—and navigated over to the section you’d normally use to update the router’s firmware with a new image from TP-Link. Instead, I selected the DD-WRT .BIN file I just downloaded, and let ‘er rip.
Screenshot: David Murphy
…and nothing happened.
Screenshot: David Murphy
As is sometimes the case, the firmware updating process didn’t accept the obviously-not-from-TP-Link image. If this happens to you, don’t give up. I hit up the DD-WRT forums, found the gigantic post for the Archer C7 router, and learned that I would probably have better luck flashing my router with the most recent DD-WRT beta, rather than what was listed in the site’s Router Database. I did that, and…success!
Screenshot: David Murphy
I then visited DD-WRT’s Wireless tab and looked for the “Wireless Mode” section for my router’s 2.4Ghz and 5GHz radios. I clicked the drop-down box and…again, nothing. No “repeater” mode to select. As it turns out, the Archer C7 uses a Qualcomm Atheros chip, and that doesn’t support “easy mode,” or the conventional repeater mode that you’d otherwise be able to select. Sigh.
Screenshot: David Murphy
If you find yourself in this boat, you still have options. This tutorial, though extensive, should be able to get your old router set up as a wifi extender. If you’re using a dual-band router, it’s even easier. Follow the steps to connect your old router to your new router via “client mode,” but don’t create a virtual interface. Use your router’s other radio in AP mode, instead—devices will connect to that, and your old router will use the other radio for the backhaul connection to your existing router.
Screenshot: David Murphy
At this point, you’re probably wishing you bit the bullet and just bought a cheap extender. I don’t blame you, but this is sort-of fun—and it’s a lot easier than I thought it would be, that’s for sure.
Let’s recap
If you’re not looking to spend money on upgrading your home wifi setup, you should consider using an older router to extend your wireless signal in your house. Every little bit helps. Keep these pointers in mind when you’re building your new Frankenstein-like networking setup:
Wherever possible, connect your older router to your existing network using Ethernet cable.
Don’t forget to disable your old router’s “routing” capabilities. If your older router has an “access point” mode, that makes this even easier.
Consider using different SSIDs for your old and new networks, so you can have more manual control over how your various devices connect.
You can also try setting your router up as a wireless extender, but you’ll take a performance hit.
If your router doesn’t come with a wireless extender mode by default, you might be able to flash it with third-party firmware to unlock the feature.

WHAT NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ABOUT SPAMS
At most software companies, support people are underpaid human shields, and hackers are much more constrained by gentlemen's agreements than regulations. If they seem to have co-evolved with our interest in faces, there's something special about primary colors for nearly all of us, because it's hidden behind a thick glass wall and surrounded by a frenzied crowd taking pictures of themselves in front of a class. It's harder to hide wrongdoing now. As an outsider, take advantage of one another, like mathematicians or physicists today—maybe like anyone who has worked on software. When you notice a whiff of dishonesty coming from some kind of lowest common denominator.1 When I was in grad school in Boston, a friend came to visit from New York.2 That was probably the best way to come up with some other solution. That scariness makes ambitious ideas doubly valuable. People fifty years ago would be astonished that one could just hack together keeps increasing. In fact it's the old model: mainframe applications are all server-based software is such a thing as good art. Actually this seems to be something you write, check in, and go home. Much of the time, perhaps most of the practice of good design can be derived, and around which most design issues center.
Maybe you can, and your competitors can, you tend to be suspicious of rich people. Every designer's ears perk up at the mention of that game, because it's a way of learning about your users. Everything would seem exactly as he'd predicted, until he looked at their bank accounts. And paying attention is more important to be right than original. Web-based applications, everyone uses the same version, and bugs can be fixed as soon as you can, but the pool allowed to write on general topics was about eight people who went to the right parties in New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. There is less stress in total, but more for the programmers. If, as the evidence so far implies, you have to know if you bet on Web-based software is that a company so big can develop software at all. At Viaweb we had external forces in plenty to keep us in line. Small things have more personality.
It's obvious now that he was on the list because he was you once, back in 1975, the last time a new way to focus one's energy, for example, does not begin by creating a design that he then imposes on the users, instead of reconciling it with scripture. Imitating nature also works in engineering. This focus on the user. You can do as much that Microsoft can't as they can do it without setting off the kind of things most people use computers for, a tenth of a second for a click to get to the end of it they had built a real, working store.3 I'm not saying it's correct, incidentally, but it might get you second place. And yet someone always decides to try anyway, and it was clear that this was the beginning of a trend: desktop computers won because startups wrote software for it. But if you just ask that question you'll get immediate answers. If you're going to have an answer or they'll look bad. All humans find faces engaging. The solution? -Based software, because desktop software has become a lot less fun.
You can see wealth—in buildings and streets, in the same way I write essays, making pass after pass looking for anything I can cut. I read occasionally about attempts to set up technology parks in other places, as if they were investing in hardware startups in 1985.4 What counts as a university for student visas.5 The unusual thing about Lisp—both in the sense of what people will pay for their skills, the answer is yes, apparently. We're starting to move from social lies to real lies. Curiously enough, it's the same reason: it will be like the past in caring nothing for present fashions. Well, that may be fine advice for a bunch of kids with webcams can be than mass-produced sitcoms. Of all the reasons we lie to kids is how broad the conspiracy is. When a company loses their data for them, they'll get a lot of cultural baggage, and in 1957 his top people—the traitorous eight—left to start a startup like this than a recipe site? My grandmother told us an edited version of the death of our first cat.6 A couple years ago my friend Trevor and I went to look at the Apple garage.
This problem afflicts not just every era, but in some degree every field. It seems obvious. Statues to be cast in bronze were modelled in wax. Most of the qualities I've mentioned are things that can be solved by recursion is nearly always best solved that way. So if you managed to recruit, en masse, a significant number of users and the other is how much you improve their lives.7 How do you see ideas that involve painful schleps. Sheer effort is usually enough, so long as you leave open the option of getting rich by tricking consumers or lobbying the government for anti-competitive regulations or tax loopholes, then let's stop them. When you can reproduce errors and release changes instantly, you can always tell.
That seems like saying that blue is heavy, or that you've done something inappropriate. But Balzac lived in nineteenth-century France, where the operating system works together with servers they control. The test drive was the way to persuade people is not just one thing. It's not cheating to copy. And server-based software, you never have to move. Whatever their other flaws, laziness is usually not one of them. Cars are a good example of why. Though indeed, most things bureaucrats do, they do badly.
So I think it can scale all the way to ensure that this is only done to suspected spams. I'd like to suggest an additional feature to those working on spam filters: a punish mode which, if turned on, would spider every url in a suspected spam n times, where n could be set by the user.8 The best thing software can be is easy, but the lies implicit in an artificial, protected environment are a recent invention. If you only need two kinds of symmetry, repetition and recursion. You're human.9 Technology should increase the gap between rich and poor evaporate. When they go to VC firms they have to have an administration that's open to suggestions, I'm going to risk making one.
Notes
But the question is to make your fortune? The word regressive as applied to tax avoidance.
If by cutting the founders'. Microsoft, would be enough, it may have no representation more concise than a Web terminal. Within Viaweb we once had a strange task to companies via internship programs.
If you freak out when people in any case, because few founders do it well enough to turn Buffalo into a de facto chosen by human editors. But the question is only half a religious one; there is some kind of people like Jessica is not one of its users, however, you don't get any money till all the other team. Ideas are one step upstream from economic power, so problems they face are probably not do that.
There's a sort of Gresham's Law of conversations.
They could make it easy. Once again, I'd say the raison d'etre of prep schools is to do and everything would have. These anti-dilution protections. The aim of such regulations is to make money off their median investments.
Ten years later Jim Ryun ran a 3 year old to get something for free. I mean this in terms of the 20th century cohesion would have met 30 people he knew. It is the case of heirs, professors, politicians, and journalists—have the concept of the 23 patterns in Design Patterns were invisible or simpler in Lisp, because for times over a series A in the other people the first half of the crown, and they succeeded.
Though you never have left PARC. Everyone else was talking about why something isn't the last they ever need. Cit.
So what ends up happening is that you'll expend a lot of legal business. In practice sufficiently expert doesn't require one to be in most if not all, the best intentions.
The amusing thing is, this would probably be to say that one of the next round. This law does not appear to be the last thing you changed. This is why I haven't released Arc. That's why the series AA terms and write them a microcomputer, and once a hypothesis starts to be, and eventually markets learn how to be a trivial enhancement of HTTP, to allow multiple urls in a in the classical world meant training landowners' sons to speak well enough to defend their interests in political and legal disputes.

5 Houseplants That Will Drastically Change The Space You Live In
Tumblr media
Imagine this: you’re in your bed, it’s 10:30PM, and Pinterest is pulled up on your phone exactly seven and a half inches away from your face. You’re hot, you can’t fall asleep, and you’re comparing your –what you’ve convinced yourself to be– boring life to everything you’re seeing while scrolling your perfected feed… all while getting blinded by the brightness of your phone, because you’re far too lazy to scroll up and hit the “Night Shift” mode button on the menu list.
Sound familiar? Yup, we’ve been there too.
On that feed you see highly enhanced photos of tropical destinations, models, sports highlights from the day, memes (tons of them), and a slew of trendy home and interior design photos. This session of scrolling lasts for–what could be– hours, and before you know it you’re up to use the bathroom before calling it a night at 1AM. As you wrap things up in the bathroom, you’re blinded by your hallway and bedroom light, and as you slow walk– hands covering your eyes– you start to notice something about your home: it lacks character… the kind of character you saw on those beautiful interior design posts. You make it to your room, sit down on your bed, realize you have little to no style, and then lay back down only to open up Pinterest to try to find those few posts that you wished you had pinned. You begin to scroll again and interrogate yourself with questions about what made those posts so eye-catching.
“What was it about those home pictures that caught my eye?”
“Which tags did they use to tag the photo?”
“Do they always keep their home this clean?”
“How do they keep their plants alive?”
“Can I even keep a plant alive?”
Then it hits you: the plants pulled the room together. It didn’t matter what kind of Scandinavian tones were implemented across the room or what kind of Ikea furnishings rested on the mantle, because it was all about the funky, exotic, and healthy looking green plants that rested on the floor, on top of the coffee table, or drooping over the floating shelves. The plants set the mood, you realized this, and you finally asked yourself “How do I get those plants, and how do I keep them alive?!” Then the head ache kicks in...
Tumblr media
Don’t fret! We have your answer. What you need are air plants: the quintessential, low-maintenance house plants that rarely need trimming, water, or attention. They will rest, just like you, in the their comfort zone.
For you, we have curated a top-tier list of the most desired houseplants. Check out our top five favorite ones below, and how they will enhance both you and your favorite spaces (and maybe your future Pinterest posts too)!
Tumblr media
1. Snake Plant (AKA: Viper’s Bowstring Hemp)
Ever had a room with an awkward corner that’s too small to put a chair or table? They’re in every house and they can truly melt the faces of anyone with an eye for interior design. The simple solution for that corner is to get a snake plant. Snake plants grow straight up, have bold green & yellow features, don’t droop, and can be planted in any kind of pot (we suggest clay ones, because they look sharp against white walls). These plants can grow to be pretty tall which not only helps add layers to the space, but covers the corner and takes away your anxiety. The snake plant produces a solid amount of oxygen in the evening, and pulls formaldehyde out of the room. Interested in potentially purchasing this plant? Click here!

2. Aloe Plant
Wait, aloe can be grown? Yes, and at a very low maintenance too! The aloe plant is the most ideal plant to have cooped up in open & bright areas, on shelves, or even resting as the centerpiece on a kitchen island. The properties of aloe (which is the gel inside the plant) include healing (if burned by stove top or oven), and they too purify the air of toxins. They tend to grow outward, so if you have a space that you’re trying to fill up the aloe plant can help you fix that problem over time, and it hardly needs water. They’re sturdy, love the sunlight, and you can leave it for a week rest-assured that it will still be alive when you get back home. Interested in potentially purchasing this plant? Click here!
Tumblr media
3. Bamboo Palm
You don’t need a house with Asian accents to have a lovely bamboo palm plant resting on your nightstand or chest of drawers. In fact, this plant is perfect for those who need miniature accents to spruce up a bland space. They grow tall, they look amazing in skinny ceramic pots, rank high on the purification scale, and need watering only when the soil looks to be going dry. You can walk into a room with a bamboo palm with peace of mind that you will feel comfortable and easy. The bamboo palm is always a topic of conversation when in a room, and are easy to purchase both online and in stores. Interested in potentially purchasing this plant? Click here!
Tumblr media
4. Red-Edged Dracaena
If you get your hands on a red-edged dracaena, you are simply a boss. Because this plant isn’t seen in houses too often, it’s unique properties stand out to everyone who will visit your home and experience it first hand. From it’s green, pink, and red tones, to its smooth and spirited texture, the red-edged dracaena is a perfect plant to elevate on top of an nook in the wall or even alongside the window sill. This plant, like the others, removes a slew of toxins in the air, and because it’s large will dominate the air purification of the space in the room. Skip out on the purchase of that love seat, and spend a little less on a couple red-edged dracaena plants. You won’t regret it! Interested in potentially purchasing this plant?  Click here!
Tumblr media
5. Jade Plant
Often referred to as the most common of the succulent plant family, the jade plant is your classic household plant. This plant can go virtually anywhere, but we most like to see it on end tables or even floating in hanging brass holders. These plants are a crowd favorite, and even your kids can take care of them with no problems at all. While this plant has a lot of properties that can help heal diseases like nausea and warts (we’ve never tried!), the jade plant purifies the air and really ties a sense of community and tranquility into the room it’s in. It can grow to be very large, so don’t ever think about dropping by the store again to pick up another one once it’s in full growing motion! Different color tones can be seen throughout the year with this plant, so be sure to take notice to the little changes. Interested in potentially purchasing this plant? Click here!
While Pinterest can be a daunting space, especially when you’re only seeing the best of interior design, it can certainly be an inspirational avenue to find excellent ideas that match your unique personality. We hope this list resonated with your needs, and be sure to stay tuned as we drop new content weekly on how to enhance your life and the area around you.

2019 Volvo XC40 First Drive Review: Redheaded Stepchild
Volvo’s three SUVs are all similarly dressed and obviously related, but line them all up, and the new little 2019 XC40 kind of stands out like a brutha-from-anutha-mutha. Like maybe dad stepped out on the XC60 and XC90’s handsome blonde mom and knocked up a vixen from the other side of the tracks. Short overhangs push the wheels to the corners, the beltline swoops up into a blind-spot-inducing C-pillar, the other vehicles’ LED headlight hammers morph into Thor’s divining rods here, and the XC40 wears the XC90’s grille inside out. It is designed so that you can assign digital keys to the smart phones of family members, loved ones (or perhaps the occasional renter) for car sharing. And the XC40 won’t force you into an arranged marriage involving laborious purchase or lease negotiations with a dealer. You can effectively “swipe right” on an app and hook up with one for as little as a year (learn about Care by Volvo below).
BLACKTOP R-Design models all get a black roof and roof rails, grille, mirrors, and an embossed black R-Design logo on the C-pillar. Momentum trim levels can have a white top for $300.
All of this is carefully planned to steer upscale millennial buyers away from the established players and into Volvo’s open embrace. As the first product on the Geely group’s new CMA small-car platform, the first 40-series car Volvo has offered on a global basis, and the brand’s first entry in the fast-growing premium compact CUV space, expectations for the XC40 are pretty high. So is the body (Volvo asserts best-in-class ground clearance and height) and the equipment specification, with the safety gear list mostly identical to an XC90’s—Pilot Assist (adaptive cruise and lane-centering), City Safety, run-off-road protection and mitigation, cross traffic alert with brake support, and a 360-degree camera system to help drivers maneuver their car into tight parking spaces. To assess its chances of success, we channeled our inner entitled, lazy, selfie-snapper and headed to Barcelona to sample what might be the most youthful Volvo since the 1957 P1900 roadster.
The only trim level available for test-driving was the range-topping T5 AWD R-Design, and we gravitated to a white one with the “molten lava” orange carpet and door insert trim (a $100 option on R-Design models only). As with the exterior, the XC40’s Sensus vertical iPad-like infotainment screen, A/C vent design, gauges, and fonts say Volvo, but the lack of a woodgrain trim option and the techie metal trim—not to mention that bright orange carpet—all reflect Volvo’s desire to lure the youth. Nothing’s getting lost on this floor or in the gigantic door storage pockets, which benefit from ditching the bass speakers from the lower door trim and replacing them with a single big bass speaker mounted to the firewall just under where the right wiper parks. The interior bristles with clever storage solutions. There’s a retractable hook above the glove box described as a place to hang carryout food bags (an owner’s mom could hang her purse there, too). A console trash bin with a lid comes out for easy emptying, and Volvo introduces its first wireless phone-charging doc in the console. The rear cargo floor folds to form a divider, with three hinge points that serve as bag hooks (another pair of bag hooks flank the cargo area for when the floor is left flat). We also like the rigid cargo cover that stows beneath the floor when carrying taller items.
XC40 T5 models are powered by a 2.0-liter turbo that’s rated for 248 hp at 5,500 rpm and 258 lb-ft between 1,800-4,800 rpm. The engines in the senior XC T5s make two more horses and reach peak torque 300 rpm earlier. A T4 front-drive base model will trail the T5 to market, outfitted with a smaller turbocharger producing 14.3 pounds of boost (down from the T5’s 20.0), so output peaks at 185 hp and roughly 195 lb-ft (full specs are not yet available). In other markets, the XC40 will introduce Volvo’s forthcoming I-3 engine making 150 hp and 207 lb-ft, and we could yet see hybrid and/or fully electric variants. The XC40 uses its elder siblings’ eight-speed automatic, ratios and all.
The all-new CMA platform employs struts in front and a fully isolated four-link rear suspension. Base cars get twin-tube shocks, the optional sport suspension (standard on R-Design) gets fancier mono-tube shocks with stiffer damping and spring rates, and an optional Four-C suspension will eventually be available with continuously controlled damping courtesy of Tenneco valves on Öhlins dampers. In another departure from SPA practice, the electric power steering system’s electric motor moves the steering rack via a second pinion instead of via parallel belt-drive and worm gears. The effort map looks like a deep notch, ramping up quickly just off center in each direction. Base cars get 18-inch wheels, 19s and 20s are optional, all shod in all-season tires for the U.S. There’s a 21-inch accessory wheel that gets summer tires.
FLAGGED The first 5,000 XC40s will feature this little rubberized Swedish flag, adhered to the clamshell hood on the driver’s side and echoing the cloth one that’s been affixed to Volvo seats for years.
So how does it feel, zipping around the twisting Catalonian roads below Montserat? Compared with an XC60 T6 AWD sampled on these very same roads in May, it’s considerably lighter, more compact, and nimbler. Volvo estimates our XC40 will hit 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, and indeed it feels nearly as quick as our last XC60 T6, which hit 60 in 6.1 seconds. Clearly trimming 600 pounds is roughly equivalent to adding a supercharger, as our XC40’s engine is towing just a fraction of a pound-per-horsepower more weight than its big stepbrother. Bury the throttle to pass a slow-moving local, and revs build quickly and class-competitively, but we wish the engineers had better differentiated this engine’s sound signature. When it’s on the boil, it has the exact same angry-horseflies buzz one hears in the big-boy XCs. Oh well, crank up the Harman Kardon jams.
As in 60- and 90-series Volvos, the driver can select between Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, Off-road, and Individual driving modes that tailor the throttle and transmission response, brake and steering feel, all-wheel-drive torque bias, and damping level (when so equipped). Sadly, XC40s trade the console-mounted diamond-milled rotary push knob for a plain black button on the center stack. Dynamic mode brightens up throttle response and sharpens transmission logic quite noticeably, but any variation in steering or brake feel were too subtle to notice on this drive. At one point an aggressively driven older VW GTI gave chase, and we were impressed by the flat cornering and high levels of grip afforded by the R-Design’s standard sport suspension. Of course our Euro-spec cars were shod in optional 20-inch Pirelli P Zero summer rubber. America gets standard all-season fitments, so we should expect more tire squeal and fewer cornering gs. None of the bumps we encountered with these sport suspenders threatened to knock passengers’ phones from their hands. If our drive raised one caution it’s on the fuel economy front. If the computer’s self-reporting is to be believed, we managed just 22 mpg over 180 miles or so, probably half of which was gentler highway cruising.
Customer deliveries are expected in the second quarter of 2018. Before then we’ll ask our own millennial staffers to rank this wild Swede amongst its Eurasian peers, the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Infiniti QX30, and Mercedes GLA-Class. Their eagerness to assume the task might be our first clue to the vehicle’s success.
NORWEGIAN WOULD? The interior manages Scandinavian sleekness without wood. It looks upscale despite conventional starter and mode-select buttons. The by-wire shifter requires two taps forward or backward to engage R or D as in T8 Volvos.
Care by Volvo—Netflix for Premium CUVs
Today’s harried millennial has no appetite for the hassle of dickering to buy or lease a vehicle, cross-shopping insurance, contemplating maintenance plans, etc. He or she just wants to pick the colors, twiddle a smartphone screen, and drive off. That’s all it takes to download a movie or TV series from Netflix or Amazon, and now as little as 10 minutes of phone-fiddling can also “download” a nice Volvo XC40 (T5 AWD Momentum trim with five popular options) for $600/month or a nicer Volvo XC40 (loaded R Design) for $700. During that time, Care partner Liberty Mutual Insurance assesses your risk profile and either accepts or declines you for its $500-deductible standard insurance plan—there’s no discounting or surcharging based on your location or driving record. The contract is for two years at 15,000 miles per year, but after just 12 months the car can be swapped for another one by signing a new 24-month contract. These mono-spec cars will be stocked and distributed by Volvo and delivered and serviced by local dealers. All the subscriber pays for is gas and local taxes/fees (this is an ownership model, not a rental model like Cadillac’s Maven). The first Care subscriptions will be offered in March, selling on convenience, not lower overall costs.

Games on itch: what I played this month
Hi, my name is Kevin Beissel.  I make game projects under the name ‘builtinaday’ and lurk on Twitter @builtinadayKB.
The purpose of this post is to cover some of the free games on itch.io, from a developer and fan perspective.  I'd like to make it a recurring series, maybe a monthly breakdown but who knows.  Like Douglas Adams said, the best part of deadlines is the great WHOOSHING sound they make while flying by.
Before we get to the games, I just want to clarify why I'm doing this and what I hope it accomplishes.  So here's the what, why and how:
The WHAT
Discuss free games available on itch.io
I've got a list of profiles to check out, but please send along any recommendations.
There are no restrictions on genres.  The whole point of this is to be curious and ask questions.  So no dumb rules like "No walking sims" or "No puzzle platformers", which would prolly eliminate half of the available games anyways.
The WHY
I want to become a better developer and playing experimental/small/art/trash games could help.
Getting an audience is hard and getting constructive feedback is even harder.  I can't help the devs covered in these posts with the former but maybe I can with the latter.
The HOW
There is no rating system.
There is no alter ego here, these are not 'angry' reviews.
These aren't even really reviews.
The goal is to focus on the design choices that were made and discuss the reasoning behind them.
I don't really care about being right, I don't really care about sounding smart ("Yeah, no shit" the reader grumbles), I don't really care about agreeing with you. I'm more interested in looking at the hierarchy of ideas (to borrow a phrase) that form game design.  By working at the ends and working in the middle we can find out more about it, right?
Enough with the formalities, let's get started.
Profile: Steven Miller (@stevenjmiller37, steven-miller.itch.io, 30 projects available)
Game: Calor
Genre/Style: Strategy, base building and combat modes
Strategy games are tall orders, especially as jam submissions, but Calor has plenty of good things going on.  The visuals are charming, the two game modes are fun, and it has some of that 'one more turn' gameplay you want in a good strategy game.
It sort of reminds me of FTL and X-Com, except it's also nothing like those games.  I still caught echoes of them, like an eerie trumpet call over a lost battlefield.  Except there's no sound in space, or so I've heard.
Hey, what spins faster: the planet in Calor or Hunter Thompson in his grave after I just mangled his 'eerie trumpet' line?
The base building mode revolves around placing resources (farms, solar panels, factories) on sections of a planet.  Every turn the planet rotates, and the direction can be changed with wind turbines.  Part of the planet has sunlight and resource tiles produce plus-1 per turn in sunlight.  Sun spots pop up every 7 or 8 turns and will destroy any resource on a tile or damage the player, but a warning message pops up when the sun spot is three turns away.
Enemies can't damage tiles but can attack the player.  It's better to move onto the enemy's tile and initiate combat, especially if the tile contains a resource.  Letting the enemy move onto your tile has a combat penalty.
The combat mode has two parts to consider: a top section with three bars that contain the enemy's attack and shield points and a bottom section laid out like a hex-style grid.  The grid has three starting nodes on the left and three ending nodes on the right with bonus nodes in the middle.  You can choose whether to use a shield node or an attack node during your turn, but not both.
If the top section has a shield in any bar, connecting to the corresponding ending node reduces your attack points.  So you have to plan paths that pick up as many bonus nodes as possible and avoid ending on a penalized node.
Both modes are good and it would be cool to see them expanded on.  There's a few things I'm curious about though, like the attack only/shield only choice you have to make in combat.
If you start a fight with low health, the enemy will prolly wipe you out with one attack.  So I suppose the design incentivizes you to keep moving away from the enemy until your health is refilled during the base building mode, then turn around and engage.  I just wish there was away to use both a shield node and an attack node on the same turn.  I know upgrade systems can be tricky and usually avoid them in my projects, but this ability would be a great addition.
Forgive me if there is this ability, but I'm pretty sure there isn't.
And I gotta ask: if you can't combine the abilities, then what's the point of including a shield option at all?  If you're low on health to start, using the shield just creates an endless loop of defensive turns.  Does health regenerate between turns in combat or only outside of combat?  Could I block the enemy's attack enough times until I'm healed and then switch to attack nodes?  What am I missing here?
I know that sounds negative, but I swear it's just curiosity.  Calor is fun to play and also gave me some challenging design questions to consider.  There are plenty of games that fail to do either of those things.
Game: Capture Horizon
Genre/Style: Puzzle platformer, side-scroller
This is a puzzle platformer that requires you to manipulate the level by taking photos of it and arranging them to form a path to the exit.  I played Camera Obscura on Steam, which uses a simiilar idea, and it's a cool concept.  I like that it relies on spatial design/reasoning skills, instead of using oblique hints to solve unfair challenges based on muddy logic/lazy rulesets.
The photo taking/placing mechanic is easy to understand.  You can't take a new photo while on an existing one and you can have up to three at a time.  It seems simple but I quickly became stumped, especially on levels five and six.
The platforming is OK, but it leads to many cheap deaths.  Most levels have two sections you need to reach; the first is relatively easy and the second is much harder.  The harder section requires a lot of trial and error, due to both photo placement and jumping issues, which means you have to redo the easy section a lot of times which is tedious.
Traditional difficulty progression states that a level should have an ascending scale of difficulty, not a descending scale.  But for short, self-contained levels like this, inverting that formula might have worked well.
And since we are here to inquire within about everything and not here to disparage, let's consider some alternative solutions to this problem:
New speed setting:  I hate when people suggest new settings for traversal speeds in my own work, because there is usually a bunch of connected factors to consider/change that they aren't aware of.  What sounds like a small tweak is actually a much larger change.
So, even tho I hate being THAT GUY, I too often found myself running right off of a platform or, even worse, jumping way too early to compensate for the fast movement.  A walk/run control setup might have fit nicely.
Change the jump mechanic:  Something like the style of jumping used in Gunpoint would have made the platforming simpler, but much more satisfying.  For those who don't know, the Gunpoint-style allows the player to activate a jumping stance, adjust the height/distance of the jump and then confirm or cancel the jump.
This style would eliminate most of the frustrating trial and error sections.  You could place a photo and test whether your jump could reach it, instead of placing a photo and jumping one pixel short and having to retry the whole level.
What helpful advice, huh?  "Ripoff a more popular game to make your own work seem better" is just about the most lazy advice you could give an artist.  And yet here I am, handing out shopworn cliches faster than Michiko Kakutani.  So where the hell is my goddamn Pulitzer?
Game: Entropy
Genre/Style: Roguelike, 8-bit isometric view
Lately I've been seeking out games that put a strong emphasis on combat, like "Superhot" or "Deadbolt".  Roguelikes usually have a heavy emphasis on combat and Entropy certainly does.
You have a fast-moving, low-damage ranged shot that repeats quickly but you can charge up a power shot.  The charged shot literally turns you into a bullet, and can be used offesnsively or defensively.  You could knock out a powerful enemy or escape from a crowd by firing to a safe spot.  You can also use the charge shot for traversal, usually shooting across gaps filled with spikes.
If I could transform into anything, I'd transform into a machine that could make ANYTHING.  I would make anything then transform back into myself and enjoy whatever (or whoever) I just made.  That might seem like an awfully large loophole, a loophole so large you could drive a Pagani Zonda thru it.  A carbon-fiber supercar loaded with guns, cash, and women (or MEN) you made in your ANYTHING machine.
But what are you?  A lawyer?  I don't remember making any of those in that ANYTHING machine.
Or you could turn into a bullet.  That is also a pretty cool thing to do.
The character movement speeds are nicely balanced.  Strafing a lone enemy is fun and juggling large crowds is intuitive.  Some enemies felt like bullet sponges, but I wasn't using the charge shot enough.  Moving around till I had space and time to get it off made those enemies easier to deal with.  The enemy design is good too, with variations in size/speed/strength that feel balanced.  They have a nice spectral, eerie look to them.
The game also opens with a short cutscene.  My favorite part was the "standing" animations.  All the characters constantly bounce up and down, which is fun to watch.  I love this choice.  Animations more sophisticated than this aren't really the point of LD jams and if they stood still that would be boring, so it's a nicely off beat decision.
The one minor problem I had was the reticle color.  It's green, which would be fine except some levels have patches of grass that make it hard to track the reticle.  Otherwise, the game has the color palette nicely split up between player, enemy and enviromental assets.
Remember:  Split up the colors, but don't split up your pants!  Why do people breath in when trying to squeeze into jeans?  If you breath out you get thinner, or at least that's what my bitchy mother-in-law keeps telling me.  I get it, Joan!  Also, get Entropy and shoot stuff.
Profile: Tooth and Claw (Dan McGrath, @daninfiction, toothandclaw.itch.io, 24 projects available)
Game: Valley of the Moon
Genre/Style: Walking sim, puzzle
You are supposed to collect four relics to reactivate your ship and leave the planet.  Despite the walking sim label, there's a couple of nice platforming sections too.  But the real point of this type of game is to create a distinct atmosphere, a space worth getting lost in.
Of all the games in this post, this is the one that gave me the purest moment, or at least the type of moment you can really only get with a videogame.  The game starts up and I see a nearby building with a large door.  Since its a puzzle game and I've just started, I assumed the door was locked.  But I went over anyways, intent on asking one of the fundamental questions videogames can offer: "Can I do that?"
Turns out, I could do that.  The door popped open, and I got a little thrill out of it.  Seems silly maybe, that something so simple could feel that rewarding, but it did.
Inside the building is one of the relics and another nicely put together moment.  You climb the final step and see a platform with a relic on it, and a giant orange moon lined up right above it.  The symmetry of the relic and moon is really nice and its a striking visual moment.
The only question I would ask is about the ending:  Why not try something wild or unexpected, something totally abstract or bizarre?
I don't mean this as a criticism, because it's quite good and I'm glad I played it, it's just a question.
If you've played other walking sims all the way through, like "Dear Esther" for example, then you know how a surprising and offbeat ending can really resonate with the right type of players.  I happen to really like the way that "Esther" ends, and can more strongly recall that odd, poetic moment better than I can recall some of the other supposedly famous moments in recent games.
A unique and challenging ending can make a lasting impression on the player and, whether they loved or hated it, that player will remember your work.
So, in the case of this game, why not do something more eccentric?  Like when you take off and leave this peaceful planet behind you end up crashing onto an uninhabitable, hostile planet?  Or you take off and safely land on a new planet, only to find out its exactly like the one you left?  Is that too 'Twilight Zone' for you?
Or maybe you take off and turn into a freaking Star Child?  Then the Star Child grows up and becomes Galactus?
Anyways, that's what happens when you leave the audience hanging.  They start out reasonable enough and end up arguing about Galactus and his big, dumb headgear.
The point being: not every game needs a meaningful or profound or abstract ending, but some do.
Game: Zealot
Genre/Style: FPS, looks like a 90s shareware game
Other Info: made in 3 days
This is a dope throwback to shareware-era FPS games.  Zealot is like a resurrected title from this era, with glorious visuals and punishing combat.
There was a wider range of titles than most people remember, mainly because the iconic titles of the time (DOOM, HEXEN) loom so large.  I was flipping thru an old PC game magazine (prolly circa 1995) and there was pages and pages of ads for obscure shareware titles, some looking totally generic and others beyond bizarre.  I prolly spent more time looking at those ads recently than I did when those games came out.  Sorry, marketing geniuses!
There was also an article about how advanced stats would become important in sports.  Something about how coaches, players, fans, journalists and gamblers would be interested in new ways to analyze performance and predict outcomes.  Who would have thought?  You know besides Paul Allen and his 300-foot yact and his investment stake in STATS LLC.  Also, fuck Paul Allen, fuck his yact, fuck his Dorsia reservations, and fuck me while we're at it.
But don't fuck Zealot!  Do play Zealot, it's quite fun.  You run and jump around on a floating platform blowing up various types of demons.  You play until you die.  My best time was 74.67176 seconds.  It was much more fun once I realized I could hold down the attack button to autofire, which seems obvious but hey, if you're so smart how about you come over and unclog this drain?  I've tried nothing man, and I'm all out of ideas.
Thankfully Dan McGrath isn't out of ideas, tho!  And Zealot is a pretty good idea.  I've never had a bad idea.  I've had great ideas that turned out horribly wrong, but never any BAD ideas.  I've also stolen ideas/entire jokes from 30 Rock, but Dan McGrath hasn't yet!

Game: Blast Flock
Genre/Style: similar to Luftrausers, but more colorful
This is the profile to check out if you like games with bright color palettes and visuals that really pop off the screen.  It helps that the gameplay is excellent, too.
And hey, people who care soooo much about what engine a dev uses: this game wasn't made with Unity, so try to find something else to complain about.
Blast Flock is a variation on Luftrausers, which is an OK game.  I really wanted to like Luftrausers, but whenever I play it I'm always left with the same two questions:  Where is the rest of the game and how come it isn't more fun?
Luftrausers felt like it was all about keeping your multiplier at 20 which feels like a chore, like an uncreative grind.  I was more interested in finding fun and interesting ways to attack enemies, especially since it had such great body/weapon/engine variety.  It felt like they incentivized creative approaches, but instead only rewarded you for following a narrow path.
Well, Blast Flock doesn't have more content, but it certainly is more fun.  The controls are intuitive and allow for a lot of experimentation.  Your group of ships always flies towards the reticle, with fire and boost mapped to lmb/rmb.  You can shoot down enemies and save them as they fall, expanding your group.
Building your squadron up and tearing thru a huge group of enemies at top speed with guns blazing feels so great.  Whipping the mouse around the screen and creating total chaos also feels great, like orchestrating your own bullet hell symphony.
Or you could conduct a symphony of the night.  But how the hell am I supposed to read music in the dark?  My conductor baton glows in the dark, but I don't want people to know that.  It only does that in case I drop it during a performance and have to find it on the ground real quick.  Symphony of the night?  How about a 'symphony of the comfortable recliner' instead?  Or ‘symphony of the better jokes’?
Thanks for reading!  If you liked this then maybe check out my itch profile, too.
