yes, it is dan's cologne! i think it's actually his aftershave, but the police misidentified it. you can see rorschach apply it (and then presumably steal it) when he sneaks into daniel's bedroom in chapter 4. Nostalgia being dan's cologne/aftershave is one of the recurring motifs in the comic

and yes nostalgia (both figurative and literal) is a prominent motif in watchmen in general, although I only noticed Dan's use of it during his arc with Laurie... I mean who can forget the dialogue in the final chapter lmfao. "dan you smell great what is that" "DEODORANT"

Laurie also has a bottle, which she smashes Manhattan's glass house with. there's a scene where Rorschach is putting on his gloves; an ad for nostalgia can be seen in the background. Sally has one. I think Jacobi had one too somewhere, which is why I thought Ror looted it. idk if Hollis is ever shown to have one but his entire story is built on the feeling of nostalgia. his memoirs contain some excellent passages on how this feeling originated from the US participation in WW2, how it was nurtured by the Cold and later Vietnam war, and how it contributed to the cult of superhero. nearly all of the crimebusters are in love with an image of the past and it's poisoning them like a fashionable uranium watch. in this essay I will-

How it ties into Ror's obsession with apocalypse, his belief being that humanity has no future. How in the first chapters Dan asks 'where did the good times go' but it's actually Ror who can't let go of the past... anon, I need to fucking lie down.

The Tormented by British author Audrey Erskine Lindop (1920-1986) may indeed be steamy, but it's steamy in all kinds of negative ways, as the writer, an award-winning novelist whose work has been made into movies, treats queerness as an aberration that leads to a life of turmoil. As the review blurb from Library Journal notes, "The author's attitude is sympathetic. She treats homosexuality as an illness and her book is in part a plea for understanding. Some of these deviates can be cured, she says. They need sympathy and help."

The protagonist is Jeremy "Jimmy" Stretton, seen as effeminate in his youth, rejected by his family, bullied at school, struggling with gender identity and feelings of abandonment and loss. As an adult, he marries Pamela, much to the consternation of both sides of the family. He seeks psychological help, but still he is drawn to men, who manipulate and take advantage of him. It is Pamela, however, who convinces him that he need not be the way he is. Ugh!

The Tormented was first published in America in hardcover as The Outer Ring by Appleton-Century-Crofts in 1955. We show the first pulp paperback version published by Popular Library in 1956. We do like the cover art, however, which is uncredited. Susan Stryker in her 2001 book Queer Pulp notes, "The woman standing in the background, striking a sultry pose in a red dress, goes completely unnoticed by the two men in the foreground, who have eyes only for each other. . . . Note, too, that the black area surrounding the title of the cover of The Tormented is a Rorschach inkblot, a further suggestion of psychological torment."

I don't know how I can articulate this properly as a redhead woman, but I really appreciate Rorschach as redhead representation. Often, I notice that redhead characters are forced into extremes. They're are either gorgeous and super special, often love interests (Jean Grey, Hope Summers) or smart/nerdy/unpopular (Dexter's Laboratory, The Proud Family), sometimes some mix of both (Barbara Gordon, Susan and Mary Test). Very rarely are redheads allowed to be ordinary. But I like Rorschach because yes, his Walter Kovacs face isn't handsome, but he isn't unattractive in the stereotypically nerdy braces and glasses sort of way, just average. He has his smart moments, but his intelligence is more ordinary compared to blond Adrian Veidt or the more macho-looking Comedian. And that's refreshing, because his being redhead doesn't define him; Walter Kovacs is the "mask, Rorschach his true face. I also think Sally Jupiter's existence is a good unintentional contrast to Rorschach because to me, Sally is a deconstruction of the special redhead girl trope. I also think it's interesting that Sally is drawn beautiful and Walter ugly, because even also unintentional, I notice people in real life defending redheads from bullying put more effort into defending the gorgeous or "adorkable" redhead girl but will put less effort for redhead men unless they're more conventionally attractive like Michael Fassbender or Prince Harry.

Hiiiiiii!! Could you make Pokemon Teams for Rorschach and/OR Daniel/Nite Owl from Watchmen? I feel like they’d have some cool teams!!!

Well leave it to one of my favorite people to get this back up and running. This was surprisingly hard, but I had a good time. I decided to do Rorschach for now, but if the interest is still there I might do Daniel/Nite Owl later ^.^

For now let's take a look at Team Rorschach!

Team Rorschach

1. Charmeleon

I think charmander was his first pokemon. Being the son of a prostitute, poor dude was picked on a lot, I imagine his charmander would literally light fires under his bullies asses. Honestly the thought is extremely hilarious. So why a charmeleon and not a charizard? Charizard is too big...too loud...too noticeable. No one is usually suspicious of mid range or basic pokemon. Charmeleon is very protective and proactive whenever he's on a mission.

2. Ditto

Hear me out: he would totally have a ditto on cases where he would need extreme discretion or on the rare occasion where he was needed in two places at once. That's right: Rorschach's ditto can look like him...so...make of that what you will...

3. Poochyena

In cases where tracking or extreme aggression are called for, Rorschach more than happily utilizes this little dude. Small and convenient, he's also good at getting into tight spaces and looking at things he normally wouldn't think to. Plus his night vision is an added plus. I headcanon that poochyenas jaws lock, and it's bite force is similar to that of a rottweiler: the bigger the skull the harder the bite. And this poochyena...has a biiiig head...just saying.

4. Noctowl

Do I really need to explain this one? He and nite Owl were partners for a long time. I think Daniel caught a hoothoot and gave it to him as a Christmas gift or something. This is the only fully evolved pokemon on Rorschach's team...it's very important to him. Anyway, it also does aerial surveillance and isn't afraid to put enemies to sleep or even knock them out entirely. Don't mess with this noctowl. It will fuck you up. Hands down no question. And if you mess with the noctowl, well, he'll break your fingers...and then some.

5. Marill

Yep, rorschachs got a fairy type, in case he ever has to deal with pesky dragons. Why marill? Because he likes how cute it is,though he'd lie and say he just likes blue (not a lie but a certainly a better reason). Marill is very caring and nurturing, it's very much the emotional and mental support pokemon.

6. Noibat

Okay fine, this one was a biiiit of a biased choice, but I think he'd like this little guy. Noibat is really good at picking up sounds and on cases where quiet is needed, noibat makes a good look out. Rorschach also taught it how to pick open locks. Yep, his noibat could rob you and you'd never know. In fact that's most likely how they met.

So what happened to Rorschach's team after his passing? Well, Daniel and Laurie took it upon themselves to take care of them. Abiding by his wishes, they never allowed them to evolve, the ones that could anyway.

However, oddly enough...his ditto was missing...hm...

hi!!!! okay, this is delightful and i know neither of us are very interested in fandom-type headcanons but i do tend to see this kind of discussion (and also some discussions about characters' sexualities, on a case by case basis) as part of reading & interacting with the text in a way that tends to enrich canon. without further ado, here's all the ones that come to mind:

alan scott -- i think this is a controversial one and it's something i used to feel a little weird about bringing up but i do stand by it, on top of various other issues alan has that blend together as time goes by and masking practically becomes second nature. though post-1940s alan's livelihood depends on pretending to be straight, neurotypical and decidedly not working class; young alan scott never had a successful social interaction with a person that wasn't doiby dickles, he's seen as rude and emotionally distant but rarely actually intends to be, he's prone to anger and intense meltdowns over things that don't appear to affect anybody else around him, he's excluded from any after-hours jsa hang-outs, he has very specific interests that he spends hours at a time fixating on, he leaves work and jsa meetings at a moment's notice, he has specific routines he does not deviate from unless strictly necessary.

kyle rayner -- to this very day, i believe kyle was intentionally written as autistic(-coded) in his half of green lantern 1990 and nothing can convince me otherwise. it's in things like how he takes everything literally or was specifically said to have been bullied in school and nicknamed 'special k' because he'd been in special ed classes or the way he can easily spend entire days hyperfixating on his art or how he's repeatedly called himself 'slow' because he can't understand what others are thinking/feeling... but i'm gonna be honest and say that most of all, it's because every single person he comes across seems to instantly dislike kyle for reasons that never get any more clear to him. every single issue that has kyle interacting with the justice league has them acting like he's committed some unspeakable social cues-related crime. Why Would They Treat Kyle Like That If He's Not Autistic.

hans von hammer/enemy ace -- i feel like i'm the only war comics reader around these parts but this is one's just a fact to me! hans is seen by enemy pilots and his own squadron as an emotionless killing machine despite the fact that his internal monologue is only about grief/guilt/melancholy/shell shock at all possible times, he's very quiet because he explicitly doesn't know how to navigate social interactions, he gets visibly uncomfortable if people touch him unexpectedly even in an affectionate manner, his only friend is a wolf, he can't fly if his plane isn't painted red, and he's consistently seen as very blunt. he's my special guy <3

other characters that i think are autistic but i can't presently say as much on are: bruce & damian wayne, both rorschachs (walter kovacs & reggie long), dan dreiberg (effectively canon based on his bird article in one of watchmen's text pages alone imo), arnold burnsteel of fate 1994/book of fate fame (along with the canon schizoaffective stuff), mason o'dare from starman 1994 (canon selective mutism central <3), and pat dugan/s.t.r.i.p.e. specifically as characterized in the stargirl tv show/modern comics influenced by it. i'm sure there's others i'm not thinking of rn but those are my personal highlights!

Looking through my high school yearbook because my best friend brought up someone from back then who had threatened to rape her and I'm just like 'wait you mean this guy? He fuckin sucked. You should have said something to me back then.'

And now I'm just looking at all of these other little versions of people I used to know like 'oh this is the guy who probably called in a bomb threat back then, guessing he's not doing well these days', 'this girl was a jerk to me in hs but then we hung out a lot in the summer time in college and we got along great', 'this guy bullied me back then but we ran into each other in a party in an entirely different state and he drunkenly apologized to me', 'this guy was my best friend from 4th-8th grade and introduced me to the love of my life. I haven't spoken to him in 10 years when we smoked weed and cigars in his parents basement', 'this guy showed up to calculus high as a kite every day because he smoked weed at home during lunch break immediately prior to the class. He died of a heroin overdose like a year after graduation', 'this guy was really REALLY into Watchmen and Rorschach in particular back then, in hindsight that's a red flag, I wonder if he's a nazi now', 'this former guy is a girl now and it didn't surprise me one bit when I found out (affectionately)', 'this girl's family's company went out of business last year. What's she doing now that life won't just hand her things?'
