#Repost @translate84000 ・・・ SUNDAY QUOTE |The Three Bodies | While the Buddha is dwelling on Vulture Peak in Rājgṛha, the Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha asks whether the Tathāgata has a body, to which the Buddha replies that the Tathāgata has three bodies: a dharmakāya, a saṃbhogakāya, and a nirmāṇakāya. #Repost @translate84000 ・・・ SUNDAY QUOTE | Think like a Bodhisattva | Set on Gayāśīrṣa Hill, where the Buddha Śākyamuni is visited by a great gathering of bodhisattvas who have traveled miraculously there from a distant world, to venerate him as one who has vowed to liberate beings in a world much more afflicted than their own. The visiting bodhisattvas are led by Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin, who asks the Buddha a series of searching questions. In response, the Buddha gives a detailed and systematic account of the practices, qualities, and nature of bodhisattvas, the stages of their path, their realization, and their activities. "The Jewel Cloud" is a very rich and closely packed Mahāyāna sūtra [link in bio]. Evidence of its authority in India can be found in many philosophical commentaries; for example, it is cited three times in the Sūtrasamuccaya (Toh 3934), which is attributed to Nāgārjuna, and repeatedly throughout Śāntideva’s Śikṣāsamuccaya (Toh 3940). Citations and references, sometimes at central junctures, are also found in the works of authors such as Bhāviveka (circa 500–78), Candrakīrti (seventh century), Śāntarakṣita (725–88), and Kamalaśīla (eighth century).1 It is no surprise, therefore, that throughout the centuries The Jewel Cloud has remained an important scriptural source for authors from all schools of view and meditation found in Tibet. #Repost @translate84000 ・・・ SUNDAY QUOTE | Aspirations | This excerpt is from what is widely known as the first sūtra [link in bio] to arrive in Tibet, long before Tibet became a Buddhist nation, during the reign of the Tibetan King Lha Thothori Nyentsen. Written to be recited for personal practice, it opens with a hundred and eight prostrations and praises to the many buddhas of the ten directions and three times, to the twelve categories of scripture contained in the Tripiṭaka, to the bodhisattvas of the ten directions, and to the arhat disciples of the Buddha. #HaveYouReadASutraYet #Education #Translate84000 #Translation #TranslationForPreservation #Preservation #WordsOfTheBuddha #BuddhaWords #WordsOfWisdom #WisdomHeritage #CulturalHeritage #PhilosophicalHeritage #LiteraryHeritage #Buddha #Buddhism #Dharma #Dhamma #History #Kangyur https://www.instagram.com/p/B5OzbFxgc5jLAst0-CyIUvKiIwnMi_SPZ1_mUg0/?igshid=7pmpzpf9tn47

#Repost @translate84000 with @get_repost ・・・ RESOUNDING | As we enter the auspicious lunar month of Saga Dawa, during which Buddhists around the world celebrate the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha Shakyamuni, 84000—together with Siddhartha's Intent, Chökyi Gyatso Institute (Bhutan), Dzongsar Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö Institute (Chauntra, India), and Dzongsar Khamje Shedra (Derge, China)—will also be celebrating the birthday of 84000 founding chair, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche! So, taking a page from the sūtras, we welcome our friends around the world to resound the words of the Buddha together, individually or in groups, on any day between June 16 – 18, 2019, at the time and place of your choosing. We will be reading a recently translated sūtra, "The Jewel Cloud." Dates: June 16 – 18, 2019 Time: Any time over the above days you feel the inspiration to read aloud! Where: Your home, shrine room, study, or centre How: Sign up here https://forms.gle/EPknitTAi7pxHV5dA [link in bio] Text: "The Jewel Cloud" *A ‘Resounding’ is the term that 84000 uses to express an activity that emulates the traditional monastic practice of reading aloud the entire Kangyur. In the monastic practice, each participant selects a sūtra or section of a sūtra and reads it aloud – until the entire Kangyur has been collectively read aloud. The 84000 version of this practice is the activity of collectively reading aloud translated sūtra(s) or sections of a sūtra that have been published in the 84000 Reading Room read.84000.co. The idea is to have as much of the sūtra(s) as possible read aloud by any number of people in the given amount of time. Reading the words of the Buddha aloud is said to benefit oneself and all those who can hear them. #Resounding2019 #HaveYouReadASutraYet #Translate84000 #Translation #TranslationForPreservation #Preservation #WordsOfTheBuddha #BuddhaWords #WordsOfWisdom #WisdomHeritage #CulturalHeritage #PhilosophicalHeritage #LiteraryHeritage #Buddha #Buddhism #Dharma #Dhamma #History #Kangyur https://www.instagram.com/p/ByRjK6mA2rDaCMIyQKgT-OvnUPXyEZRyXa6KGw0/?igshid=1whbl70lrvnfl

#Repost @translate84000 with @get_repost ・・・ SUNDAY REFLECTIONS | “The Chapter on Going Forth” is the first of seventeen chapters in The Chapters on Monastic Discipline, a four-volume work which outlines the statutes and procedures that govern life in a Buddhist monastic community. This first chapter traces the development of the rite by which postulants were admitted into the monastic order, from Buddha Śākyamuni’s informal invitation to “Come, join me,” to the more elaborate “Present Day Rite.” Along the way, the posts of preceptor and instructor are introduced, their responsibilities defined, and a dichotomy between reliable monks and immature novices described. While the heart of the chapter is a transcript of the “Present Day Rite,” the text is interwoven with numerous narrative asides, depicting the spiritual ferment of the north Indian region of Magadha during the Buddha’s lifetime, the follies of untrained and unsupervised apprentices, and the need for a formal system of tutelage.
