prologue ; heathstar
— pov: heathfleck
Tumblr media
when copper eyes closed, heathfleck found himself surrounded by stars.
in the inky blackness he now stood amongst, silver paws forming small ripples beneath him, wispy figures formed in front of him — one, then two; three, four, five. each new apparition was given a number in his head until they ceased appearing; until nine starry, almost-opaque cats had lined themselves before him.
the one that stepped forward first was a queen — he could tell by the slow, methodical gait she walked with; in the way her eyes were lined with the tell-tale wear of age. as she reached him, heathfleck's head instinctively bowed, his gaze landing on her paws as they slowed to a gentle stop just a fox fur's length from his.
"my name is valleyrustle," she said; a moment later, her nose was pressed to the top of heathfleck's head. "with this life, i give you duty. never turn your back on your clan — they need you now more than ever."
valleyrustle's nose left the tom's fur; her paws retreated. when heathfleck raised his head once more, an unknown warrior brushed past the queen to take her place. her eyes were gentle as they gazed into his — made that way by past and circumstances that heathfleck would never know.
"i was once called birchwhisker." even the way she spoke was gentle; the touch of her nose was so soft he hardly felt it. "with this life, i give you acceptance. don't be quick to judge those who differ from you."
birchwhisker took a small step backward, star-filled ripples sprawling out from beneath her paws and dancing in heathfleck's eyes. another smile was offered to him, her own translucent ones lingering on his copper before she finally left her spot before him to make way for the next.
a kit bounded out of line, crossing the gap between the silvery figures and heathfleck in uneven leaps, skidding to a stop just before crashing into him. a stab of pain shot through his heart at the sight — at how small he was; at how his features were still alight with happiness — his legs momentarily hesitating before lowering him down to the kit's height.
"i'm flickerkit!" his voice was a high-pitched mewl; a testament to how unfairly quick his life was cut short. standing on his hind legs and pressing his paws onto heathfleck's shoulders for support, his tiny nose touched the bigger male's forehead. "with this life, i give you curiosity." in another scenario, heathfleck might have found amusement in the clearly-rehearsed words. "always look for new things! don't be afraid to try something different!"
pushing off heathfleck's shoulders, flickerkit dropped back down onto all four paws. as the gray tom rose to his full height, the kit bounded away again, a sleek she-cat stepping gracefully over him to take his place.
"sweetrapid." there was no additional pleasantries in her words; and when her eyes met his, heathfleck felt as though she were staring straight through him. but when her nose touched his head, it was gentle and unwavering. "with this life, i give you endurance. use it well to weather any hardships you face."
her exit was as succinct as her entrance; heathfleck hardly had a moment to process the words she had said to him before she was gone once more. blinking rapidly, an unfamiliar apprentice filled his view, stepping lightly up to him with an air of admiration.
"i'm newtpaw," she mewled, stretching upward to reach his head and press her nose into it. "with this life, i give you mentoring. use it for those who look to you for guidance — teach them to the best of your abilities."
as she pulled back, the stars in her eyes glimmered, her lips pulling into a smile that revealed the soft glint of her fangs. "good luck." the sincerity she spoke with was palpable — it sent a faint tingle through heathfleck's fur that left the tip of his tail twitching. "i wish you all the best."
the apprentice returned to her previous spot amongst the others; and once she had sat back down, a large tom rose to his feet. with a soft grunt, he strode forward, the aura of power radiating off him nearly causing heathfleck to draw back from him.
"name's houndtwist." his voice was gruff as it hit heathfleck's ears. up close, he could see the scars that lined the elder's body — three over one eye; two over one shoulder — and the way one ear had a piece torn haphazardly from it. the nose that pushed itself against his forehead was rough and solid; like stone. "with this life, i give you resilience. never falter in your duties. your clan needs you as much as you need them."
when the tom left, heathfleck felt his muscles untense themselves and his fur begin to lay flat against his back once more. in place of houndtwist, another warrior heathfleck didn't realize stepped up, his gait laced with a limp he didn't bother to conceal.
"my name's ferretberry — or, was ferretberry." he gave a timid, awkward laugh, as if something he said was funny — perhaps it was, and heathfleck simply missed the joke. brushing off the silence his statement received, ferretberry took another half-step forward to touch his nose to heathfleck's head. "with this life, i give you farsightedness. don't let what's right in front of your nose blind you — always think ahead."
the male offered a small nod before turning around — with a twinge of difficulty; one hind leg didn't bend quite right, as if it had healed wrong after an injury — and limping away. the cat that brushed past him on the way to take his spot was no more familiar than ferretberry had been; and as they grew nearer, the smell of catmint and other herbs he couldn't quite recognize burned at heathfleck's nose.
"halftooth is my name." wisdom dripped from his tone; sat comfortably on his shoulders as he padded up to heathfleck's face. his nose pressed into his fur, the scent permeating the older tom's skin burying itself uncomfortably into the back of his throat. "with this life, i give you devotion. stand fast alongside your clan always."
as halftooth stepped away and turned his back — and heathfleck found himself able to breathe easily once more — the final, ninth cat in the line before him rose from her spot between houndtwist and sweetrapid. with the air of someone who had lived through this before — the dignity and poise of someone who had experienced more lives than heathfleck could count — she made gentle, long strides over to him. when her paws came to a slow stop just before his, heathfleck's head was already bowing to her.
"my name is poppystar." her voice held power and commanded respect; but there was also pride hidden somewhere in it, as well. as her nose touched the top of his head, heathfleck's eyes slipped closed. "with this life, i give you the gift of tireless energy. use it to guide your clan to the fullest and best of your abilities."
unlike the others, poppystar's voice continued on after her muzzle had left heathfleck's head. "i hail you by your new name, heathstar." the name — his name — made his head lift up and copper eyes reopen; when they met poppystar's amongst the backdrop of stars, she gave him a gentle smile. "your old life is no more. you have now received the nine lives of a leader, and so starclan grants you the guardianship of brokenclan. defend it well; care for your young and old; honor your ancestors and the traditions of the warrior code; and live each life with dignity and honor."
a chorus of voices followed her words — eight, all chanting the name he had been donned with; the name he had been gifted; the name that came with it the lives of every cat in his clan.
heathstar. heathstar. heathstar.

I wrote about EarthquakeClan's first ever political crisis! I've been meaning to write something with Lynxstar for so long, but I did not have the energy to make illustrations for it, sadly. Not for a lack of trying.
Lynxstar is just my special little princess I love this pixelated cat SO much, you gotta understand
-----------
"How long has it been? A moon and a half?"
Riverfur's voice broke Lynxfang out of his concrentration. The brown tabby's comment was so sudden that he had to clarify what he meant: "Since Pikestar's death."
"How is that more important than catching prey?" Asked the gray, spotted tom. "We've been keeping up just fine without him."
"I don't know, BrokenClan was acting strangely at the last Gathering. Brightnight had to represent us, and Sunstar looked so strangely at her. What if they are planning to attack us now that we're weak?"
"Tch, and break apart the alliance between our clans? Sunstar is young, but he's not mouse-brained, Riverfur, he knows he needs us."
"If only Wishwhistle was still around…"
"Wishwhistle was a medicine cat. What would she even do?"
"She would've understood it was her duty to lead EarthquakeClan!"
Lynxfang moved his long ears. The bat he had been trying to catch before the conversation started was long gone, and he moped its loss. A full belly would have helped him handle Riverfur's needless whines. "And I guess Asterkit isn't fit for leadership either, traditionally speaking."
"You're not taking this seriously!"
"Riverfur, darling, I'm only following your logic here. I'm aware a cat can not be mature enough to lead a clan if all they've got is five moons, but by appointing the right regent, I don't see why we can't turn the little catworm into Asterstar."
Riverfur and Lynxfang had been close friends ever since teenagehood, but that habit of his of always giving out the worst solutions to his problems was growing older and older by the day. Going to the happy place was not enough sometimes.
"Why don't you go to the Moonstone then,  Lynxstar?"
Riverfur stomped away, angrily.
"I mean, if it'd make you happy! I'm all over you, honey!"
And just like that, Lynxfang was left all alone. He refused to feel bad for the sarcasm he had employed, as much as he knew he had upset Riverfur for good. You can't just interrupt a guy when he's trying to get out of his comfort zone for the sake of the clan! He was already lamenting the lack of violent physical contact between cats, and he wasn't about to lament the lack of a leader too. He could feel bad about this after he found that bat again, and gorged its eyes out of its skull for thinking he could run away.
He brought a couple of prey back to camp as compensation for breaking the Warrior Code with that bat — and its mate —, but his generous contribution did not stop the side eyes his clanmates gave him as he trotted towards the fresh-kill pile. With an open mouth, Riverfur's scent came in easily and he became content with the fact that his friend came back safe and sound despite the separation. He'd charm his way back into his heart, he was sure of it!
"Huh," whispered Leopardwillow, which he managed to overhear "You might not believe in me, but he trained under one of the most honorable warriors EarthquakeClan had since it's Renaissance."
"Did he?" Hootwhisker whispered back, sharing her attention between the gossip and Stemkit. Both were just as important to the queen.
Leopardwillow nodded as she complemented: "Darkstripe, his name was. Our first ever tragedy."
Tch, since when was Darkstripe honorable? Since he tried isolating him from the other apprentices? Since he started going around saying he was too unstable to be taught advanced fighting skills? Since he had assured Ravenpaw, now Raventuft, that he was going to get killed by his paws someday? He didn't even do his job! Lynxfang owed his warrior name to the rogues he met around the forest, and the fierce kittypet Cece — a kittypet! Imagine being so incompetent a kittypet is more of a mentor to your apprentice.
When Lynxfang passed by the two she-cats, he did not do so much as to even greet them, and walked immediately towards Raventuft. He was welcomed with his lover's friendly tongue, but then his purring stopped and was replaced by a yelp of betrayal.
"You already ate?! This isn't fair," Raventuft commented.
"Not you too."
"Who am I going to eat with now, everybody else is so dull," he threw himself on the floor, dramatically.
"It's critical, but you'll live. I just had to gather more patience to myself on patrol today."
"Let me guess: it involves Riverfur, Pikestar and Asterkit?"
Great, he had been talking about it to the entire forest. "He doesn't chill, does he?"
"She," he corrected.
"What?"
"She's been meaning to tell you, but you kinda blew it up with your sarcasm there, so she told me to give you a headsup. Said you did not deserve to know by her mouth until you stopped being a huge fox-dung; her words, not mine."
As much as he'd kill and die for Raventuft, Lynxfang knew better than to believe in everything he said. He was probably trying to create discord between he and Riverfur by adding that last part. Riverfur wanted him to know, but was too angry to face him; she'd never call him fox-dung, though.
"Was that why she mentioned Wishwhistle?"
"Riverfur? Being subtle? Come on. She only mentioned her because she wishes that incompetent goofball could be half as good a leader as her father was. I don't need to remind you how unsubtle Riverfur was when we were younger, do I?"
"Please, spare me."
Raventuft purred. "The hedgehog spike on your bed was pretty funny."
"Glad my suffering brings you joy, love, because it only brings me regret."
He purred some more. "I have no idea why she still sticks around with us."
"Maybe she finds you handsome."
Raventuft stopped purring. He looked at Lynxfang. He looked with murderous intent. "You did not need to say that."
"What, you'll just let this chance slide? You could go in there and trash talk about me, and then you lie your head on hers, and then—"
"She likes mollies, Lynxfang!"
Raventuft looked so cute when he was upset, but Lynxfang knew better than to overdo it. As much as he looked funny, it was never a good idea to tease him for so long. He shrugged. "Worth the shot."
"Besides, I already have you," he muttered, as he laid his head on his back. "That's more than enough for me."
"I love you too, ducky."
From that corner of the warrior's den, Lynxfang could see the cave tunnel in which Pikestar would go inside to rest. It looked spacious, it looked distant — it looked safe from the side eyeing and the prophecies of destruction Petaleye had made about him. He was always jealous of Pikestar, keeping a den all to his own. He remembered how his clanmates would look at Pikestar when he came around, even when he was growing senile and his decisions were not always reinforced. There was respect in those eyes. There was admiration. There was fear.
As unreasonable as some of her fears were, Riverfur was right about two things: the first thing was that EarthquakeClan was seen as weak and unstable by the others and it could be exploited; the second was that Lynxstar did not sound so bad. It sounded right.
"Hey, ducky?"
"Hm?" Raventuft raised his head to look at him. "What is it, Lynxfang?"
"Do you want to make an announcement with me?"
Raventuft tilted his head, but followed along. Everytime that Lynxfang became nonchalant, it meant trouble, and Raventuft loved watching trouble unfold. His legs became more and more paralyzed, however, the closest the two of them became of the leader's den, and his eyes were slowly opening more and more. No, not even he could go that far...
Lynxfang jumped gracefully from rock to rock until he reached the top, and then he yelled as loud as he could: "Let all cats old enough to cat their own prey gather in the middle of our camp, for a clan meeting!"
StarClan above, he was going that far.
There was only one word to describe the clan cat's reaction: bewilderment. In the middle of a breezy snowstorm, their furs all spiked up, the clan gathered around to listen to the announcement.
"EarthquakeClan has been leaderless for longer than it should have been," Lynxfang continued, "and the rightful heir is not of age yet. I decided to appoint myself as temporary regent of EarthquakeClan, and Raventuft as my deputy. To honor my clan, I shall go to the Moonstone with Brightnight in the evening, and come back with the nine lives of a leader."
"How would that be temporary, if you get the nine lives?" Leopardwillow immediately protested. Keeping peace is going to be so much harder with him as a star..., she thought to herself.
Lynxfang bared his teeth at her, but kept the calm demeanor. "I shall pass them all down to Asterkit once he comes of age, and has taken at least one apprentice to himself."
"You never trained an apprentice before!"
"Oh, but I will. I'll start with Asterpaw."
There were no verbal protests, but there were no excited screams of Lynxstar! Lynxstar! Lynxstar! echoing through the rocky walls. The clan was speechless.
Riverfur took a deep breath and broke the silence: "I'm with Lynxfang. Right now, we need a strong leader to intimidate our rivals. EarthquakeClan vanished from existence once, it could vanish again!"
Leopardwillow was shaking her head repeatedly. She whispered: "Riverfur, he'll ruin our diplomacy…!"
"He'll be Lynxstar temporarily. Once Asterstar takes leadership upon himself, we'll restore whatever allies we've lost."
Leopardwillow lowered her ears. There was nothing she could do.
Brightnight agreed to take Lynxfang to the Moonstone in the evening. Raventuft was starting to come around to the title of deputy. All that Lynxfang needed right now was one last visit to the nursery before departing. Just for fun.
Asterkit had listened to it all, and was hissing to the tom as he walked in. He could not so much as reach his head, but he still showed his claws at him, spitting: "Mom told me about you! She said she kept seeing horrible things about you, from StarClan!"
He had to laugh. "Little one, your mom was never trained to be a medicine cat. Who's to say her visions were real?"
"I'll run away before I'll be your apprentice!"
"And where would you go, huh? There's a snowstorm, tiny, and your coat is not as thick as mine. But it's whatever, really… if you die, all my problems are gone with you."
Asterkit began cowering down, as Lynxfang's shadow covered him. He was such a big cat. It would be such a hard fight.
"Oopsie, I wasn't supposed to spoil my future plans. Owies, I did it again. Ah, I guess it can't be helped. Unless…"
"Unless…?"
"Unless you help me. In whatever I ask you to do."
"W-what do you want from me?"
"Oh, but it's too complicated to explain right now, since you see… I gotta skedaddle. Keep that eagerness for a chit-chat for when I come back, alright, kiddo? Can you do that for me? Good."
"Leave him alone!" Horsekit jumped in front of Asterkit, hissing. "Go away!"
He purred. "You're such a funny molly, I might make you my apprentice as well, so you can protect him all the time! Later!"
Lynxfang walked away, feeling free for the first time in his life. He came back Lynxstar, leader of EarthquakeClan.

Dark Forest Wins AU
Forgotten Stars
The Dark Forest won the Last Hope battle. The Clans were named after the current leaders of the Dark Forest at that time- Mapleshade- MapleClan, Brokenstar- BrokenClan, and Tigerstar- TigerClan. Generations have passed, but the Clans are still ruled by darkness.
TERRITORIES:
MapleClan- The “strongest” or most respected clan. Mapleshade’s training and teachings are still used here, even now. The territory is old ThunderClan territory and most of old ShadowClan territory. Cats here are usually large, majority are dark pelted. Use mostly group fighting techniques to inflict as much damage as possible in a short amount of time to reduce injuries to the clan. The forests have overgrown and gotten hard to navigate, making outsiders disoriented and lost easily.
BrokenClan- The second “strongest” or most respected clan. Brokenstar’s cruel influences and training have made the cats brutal and cutthroat. The territory is old RiverClan territory and half of old ShadowClan territory. Cats are usually well muscled with camouflaged pelts. Use mostly disorienting fighting techniques, like having two similar looking cats yowl loudly and attack at the same time to further scare and confuse the opponent. The rivers have flooded and receded, causing a barren wetland.
TigerClan- The “weakest” or least respected clan. Tigerstar’s brutal and harsh ideals have strongly influenced the clan. The territory is old WindClan territory and some old RiverClan territory. Cats here are sleek and sneaky with striped pelts to make them nearly invisible in the grass. These cats use mostly sneak attacks and fight alone. The moorland grass has overgrown to the point where a tall cat could stand up and not be seen, and groves of trees and bushes have popped up throughout the territory.
The Place of No Stars- The almighty. The omniscient. The Dark Forest watches all. The Dark Forest sees all. The worst of the worst cats are sent here to slowly rot away, to turn into horrendous monsters. Their shadowy territory is unaccessible to the wake, only to the sleeping and the dead. The Forest has tall trees that seem to go on forever into a moonless and starless black sky. Light comes from glowing fungus and mushrooms and from some source beyond the trees that no one has found. Dark Forest cats have an X mark slash over their left cheeks and their hearts as well as many more scars from a cruel life. They seem transparent and have black eyes with their original eye color as the pupil color. They leak dark blood from their death wounds and always have their claws out. As a cat stays in the Dark Forest, it further corrupts them, mentally and physically. Cats get larger, stronger, and less feline looking. Their canine teeth grow to be much longer than before and they get less mentally stable. The longer the cat is in the Forest, the worse they get. Some even get odd but unnerving growths on them.
The Gray Territories- Neutral ground. Cats that did nothing significant or had unfinished business were sent here, like some kind of Purgatory. The world is unsaturated and boring, but the cats make it more fun. Cats stay the same as they were in life, just slightly transparent, glowing from the eyes, and a blood seeping death wound. The cats who have been there the longest run the place and have odd growths and random bits of neon colors on them with odd pattens in their eyes. If a cat resolves their unfinished business, they ascend to the Beyond.
The Beyond- Pretty much a less controlled Starclan. Extremely mysterious. Only the most significant and good go here. The territory is a prosperous version of the lake territory, perhaps from before the Great Battle. Cats are starry, transparent, and have white eyes. They cannot speak to the living, only to the dead. The can send messages to the living through showing them visions. They constantly must hide from the Dark Forest. If they get too comfortable sending messages to cats, the receiver is killed and the hunt resumes for the Starwalkers.
PREDATORS:
MapleClan- Foxes, badgers, coyotes, bobcats
BrokenClan- Foxes, coyotes, alligators, constrictor snakes
TigerClan- Foxes, coyotes, birds of prey, poisonous snakes
Nicknames-
MapleClan- Kit Hearts
BrokenClan- Swamp Dwellers
TigerClan- Grass Eaters
Dark Forest- Soulsnatchers/Wrathbringers/Wraiths
The Gray Forest- Gray Sprits/Eternals
The Beyond- Ethereal Beings/Starwalkers
CLAN LIFE:
Kits are taken to begin training at 3 moons old. If they complete training, they are given the -paw suffix and a scarier sounding prefix at 6 moons old. If they don’t complete training, they are killed for weakness. Apprentices become warriors at 1 year old. They are given the task of killing any cat their leader chooses in the most horrible way. If they can’t complete the task, they are killed. She-cats can choose to not be fighters and can be hunters or permanent queens who always birth new warriors. These cats are still trained to fight, but it is a much more peaceful life. Queens and kits are treated the best in all clans, but especially in MapleClan. Elders are not allowed in the clans. Clan leaders keep their warrior names, but are given 7 lives to be more powerful and dangerous. Leaders will often use claws to enforce their will. Dark Forest cats randomly come to the clans every moon to assure loyalty, receive a moon’s worth of prey, and kill weak or rebellious cats.
Revolts are squashed instantly due to the fact that the Dark Forest has spies in every clan.
Trust no one.
