The new batch of @2000adcomic audiobook adaptations came out this past week. I think it was just last week that I proclaimed Dredd vs Death to be an all-time favorite comic, so of course I had to listen to this audiobook version. It’s a multi-cast recording with music and sound effects, but otherwise a pretty direct adaptation of the comic. Peter Serafinowicz and Amber Rose Revah are fantastic as Death and Anderson. I’m still getting used to Adam Basil as Dredd, more so because he’s like the fifth actor I’ve heard as Dredd, and it’s a slightly different interpretation than I’d gotten used to in previous adaptations. The story begins with Ealga ‘Ellie’ Culhoun as she arrives in Sheperds Bush, London, having fled from Ireland. The year is 1969 and Ellie’s cousin Tommy is helping her to find her feet with a job at his local. Despite Tommy’s hospitality, his intentions run darker… Early Doors creates an uneasiness for the reader, as streets and characters creep across each page and shadows linger. Sullivan’s art sculpts an eerie space, one which becomes emblematic of the new and uncertain world Ellie finds herself in. Many of the characters Ellie meets are equal parts friendly and menacing, which emphasises a feeling of unease. This is especially true of the men in the story, as their behaviour is never challenged in their community and the onus is on women to facilitate or adjust their ways. It all adds to a creeping sense of dread for Ellie and readers alike. After Ellie turns down an invitation to join her colleague and some of the rowdy locals, she is met with, “Honestly, Ellie! Lighten up! Just a bit of fun innit?”. Ellie's house-keys are slipped between her knuckles [3] as more advances are made before she heads for home. It's a strong visual cue, paired with the vertical slicing of the panels and splashes of red, that serves as a warning to the violence that stalks the streets. The night’s events set her on a path to Mammy Magee, a figure of power and shelter for women in the community. Sullivan’s use of colour on the page [4] instantly brings Mammy’s warmth and home to life, although you’re never quite sure if that warmth will burn Ellie. Yet Mammy is a character to be reckoned with and one who will facilitate justice when others turn a blind eye... These are the stories that made me a Judge Dredd fan. I’ve probably read the Dredd vs Death stories here at least as many times as any other comics in my life. This particular volume collects not only those stories, with beautifully reproduced art by @brian.bolland, which introduce not only Judge Death, but also Judge Anderson, but the first Anderson solo story, newly colored, and some miscellaneous other Death stories.
