1st research week at the British Library for SHELTER (part of my @aceagrams funding) & feeling very lucky. Having access to such a wealth of books, articles and audio & visual references is a genuine gift. It’s also free to be a @britishlibrary reader. As are the snazzy lockers. I highly recommend joining. Especially if you’re researching a story. Not to mention the surprise of an early printing press next to the loos for good measure. Today’s reference: Womens Lib 1970, Westway Travellers, Celtic Folk Magic & Witch’s familiars Monday’s was the Newsroom (not pictured) reading microfilm of newspapers from 1970. I can confirm The Sun was as vacuous as ever. 💥REPOST @deadmensboots 📢 “Finally got around to reading the hauntingly atmospheric Shelter: Early Doors by Lucy Sullivan. A folk-horror that dials into themes of displacement, community and trauma.  The story begins with Ealga ‘Ellie’ Culhoun as she arrives in Sheperds Bush, London, having fled from Ireland. The year is 1969 and Ellie’s cousin Tommy is helping her to find her feet with a job at his local. Despite Tommy’s hospitality, his intentions run darker…  Early Doors creates an uneasiness for the reader, as streets and characters creep across each page and shadows linger. Sullivan’s art sculpts an eerie space, one which becomes emblematic of the new and uncertain world Ellie finds herself in.  Many of the characters Ellie meets are equal parts friendly and menacing, which emphasises a feeling of unease. This is especially true of the men in the story, as their behaviour is never challenged in their community and the onus is on women to facilitate or adjust their ways. It all adds to a creeping sense of dread for Ellie and readers alike.  After Ellie turns down an invitation to join her colleague and some of the rowdy locals, she is met with, “Honestly, Ellie! Lighten up! Just a bit of fun innit?”. Ellie's house-keys are slipped between her knuckles [3] as more advances are made before she heads for home. It's a strong visual cue, paired with the vertical slicing of the panels and splashes of red, that serves as a warning to the violence that stalks the streets.   The night’s events set her on a path to Mammy Magee, a figure of power and shelter for women in the community. Sullivan’s use of colour on the page [4] instantly brings Mammy’s warmth and home to life, although you’re never quite sure if that warmth will burn Ellie. Yet Mammy is a character to be reckoned with and one who will facilitate justice when others turn a blind eye...
