summary: After being rejected by Poe, the two of you are assigned a mission together. And a lot can happen during a mission.

As much as he hated the First Order, Poe had to admit they knew how to throw a hell of a party. When you walked in, it was hard to pretend to be unaffected by the opulence that made the inside of the mansion look like a palace. The deep red tapestry contrasted with the black and white First Order symbol displayed in huge posters that started on the second floor balcony and ended just short of touching the ground floor. 

Stormtroopers were positioned in various spots across the room. You and Poe keep a serious expression as you walk down the stairs, your arm attached to his. Two excited, well dressed Twi’leks greeted the two of you. They wore very colorful and well tailored suits, one in pink and the other in lilac, and grabbed your hand immediately. The gesture got Poe on his commander mode: quickly, his right hand grabbed your arm, pulling you back to him, while the left hand went to the blaster he hid on the insides of his cape.

“My dear, you look radiant, what a wonderful dress!”, pink suit said, analyzing your figure. His eyes stopped at Poe’s hand on your arm. The Twi’lek looked at the pilot with a mischievous smile. “Well well, you brought an equally beautiful specimen with you.”

You immediately put your hand on top of Poe’. He knew that was your code for don’t do anything stupid, let me take it from here, still, he was furious with pink suit’s insolence.

Lilac suit must have noticed Poe’s expression as well, coming to the rescue and approaching you with subtlety. 

“I’m Jib and this is my husband Boq, welcome to our house!”, he gestured to the wide room behind him. “We’re so excited to make new acquaintances. My apologies if Boq here was overly enthusiastic, we saw you from afar and were mesmerized by your beautiful dress”, Jib gave you an apologetical look.

“Thank you for having us”, you gave them your hand, which they promptly kissed. “I’m Yasmin and this handsome grumpy overprotective man here is my husband, Kal.” 

Poe shook hands with the other couple, giving them a nod, feeling grateful for your quick thinking. He still couldn’t shake that bad feeling that had been following him all this way. Normally, he would be the charmer, but at that point, he just didn’t have it in him. At least the taciturn energy he was displaying aligned with the character you had just invented to explain his behavior. 

“You look fabulous too. I’m glad I’m not the only one wearing some color at this party”, you gave the Twi’leks a knowing look. They laughed loudly, completely taken by you. And to think Poe was the only charming pilot of the bunch. He made a mental note to praise you for it later. Being extroverted wasn’t in your nature, just as being quiet and mysterious wasn’t his.

Poe, however, didn’t understand why you were spending so much time on the hosts, when the mission was very clear on finding the general and leaving as fast as you could. 

“Don’t even get us started! So many boring looks today”, Boq commented, rolling his eyes. “The three of us are definitely standing out.”

…which was less than ideal for an undercover mission like the one you were in. Poe was officially worried. 

But you were so confident, it was obvious you had some sort of plan. He would just have to go with it.

A few drinks later, Jib and Boq had told you a lot of interesting information. They were merchants, had business on several planets and didn’t exactly align with any side of the war, choosing to stay out of conflicts as much as they could. Except for the one time the First Order held some of their cargo back in one of the planets they conquered — Jib and Boq made a deal with one of the generals, owing him a favor. That’s how they ended up opening their house to host the party.

“It could’ve been a lot worse”, you said in a concerned tone. “You were lucky the general had some compassion…”

“Right? That’s so rare nowadays”, Boq said, visibly affected by the alcohol. 

“Do you remember his name?”

Jib and Boq looked at each other. Before they could think the weird question through, Poe stepped in:

“As a businessman myself, it’s always good to know who to reach out to when a situation like that happens.”

It was the first time Poe talked since the beginning of the conversation, and Jib and Boq looked delighted with this new development. 

“It’s good indeed. As traders, we must keep a good contact list”, Boq looked around the room. “Not only do we remember the general in question, but he is in attendance tonight.”

“Oh, there he is, his name is…”, Jib pointed to the back of a man dressed as every other First Order officer in the room. Except, he had striking red hair.

“...Armitage Hux.”

Poe tried to catch your attention, so the two of you could leave the hosts and follow the general. But he couldn’t quite read your expression. You didn’t seem surprised or satisfied with the new information. It was almost like you just had something really sour to eat.

“Is everything okay?”, Poe whispered in your ear, taking advantage of the fact that the Twi’leks got distracted by other guests.”

“Remember how I told you some people I knew chose to serve the First Order?, you whispered back.

Poe nodded.

“Armitage Hux is one of them…In fact, he was a close friend of mine.”

“The carrot head? Really?

“Yes”, you set your eyes on Hux. Grabbing Poe’s hand, you started leading the way through the crowd. 

“Are we just going straight up to him?”

You dodged a few guests and stopped by the bar. 

“Like, hey, we know about the notebook, now give it to us.”

Ignoring Poe, you ordered two drinks to the droid bartender. Besides the stormtroopers, all the workers there were droids, Poe noticed. It looked like you had just realized the same, as he followed your gaze, which was focused on a band of droids who played classical Imperial music on a small stage. Of course Poe had been feeling horrible that whole time, the soundtrack was terrible, with chords shrieking off beat, setting an unsettling tone to the whole spectacle. 

“We aren’t going straight to him, we’re going to stop near him for a little bit, just enough for him to recognize me”, you smelled your drink before taking a sip. 

“Absolutely not, delete it, that’s a terrible idea”, Poe was agitated again. 

“No, it’s not”, you answered, putting a fake smile on your face and pretending to fix Poe’s collar as a stormtrooper walked next to you.

“Yes, it is”, he imitates you, while keeping his pose. “I’m not going to let you present yourself to him on a silver platter. That’s extremely dangerous.”

“Trust me, an old ewok is more dangerous than Armitage Hux. I know what I’m doing.”

“Do you though? You haven’t seen this guy in decades. A lot could have changed since then.”

“Please, please, trust me on this? I have an idea that will let us grab the notebook and leave this place in the next hour.”

Poe scratches his beard, trying to maintain his composure. If you weren’t undercover, the discussion would have evolved to you reprimanding him and him walking away. But he was cornered there, without many movements available to him. And Poe was well aware you knew and was taking advantage of that.

“If there is even the slight possibility of you getting hurt, I’ll intervene and we’ll do it my way. Understood?”, the seriousness in him wasn't just for the pretense of “Kal” anymore. 

“Let’s do this”, you answered with a sparkle in your eyes. It reminded Poe of the thrill of finally being able to fly again after being in the med bay for weeks after an injury. Heart soaring and soul shining bright after finding purpose.

It’s shot from the very front row of the stalls at the side so, although this causes a lot of problems for the brave person who filmed it, we DO get many nice close-ups and a chance to see the show from quite an unusual angle at times! Very clear sound throughout.

The future of resilient construction – Building Information Modeling

Introduction

The world of construction and infrastructure has its advantages and disadvantages. One of the most critical aspects in construction engineering is the presence of the word or phenomenon called “disaster”.

Through modernized tools and processes like Building Information Modeling (BIM) and autonomous technology or automation, disaster risks can be mitigated substantially.

3D modeling has changed the world of construction wherein it serves as a catalyst to save cost & time. These new improvements have changed the way AEC professionals design, analyze, and build projects.

The current plot

Looking at the current population scenario, it is important to reflect technological advancements from the AEC fraternity, and provide a means to help the current population through sensitive conditions.

The word “disaster” carries a myriad of meanings, which could range from human errors in building infrastructure, usage of low quality materials, lack of skill, or natural disasters.

The lack of knowledge in people that move from a rural setup to an urban one creates inferior or substandard construction that lacks optimum structural components to withstand disasters.

Understanding the word “resilience” comes from an understanding that talks about the capacity of a person, system, or thing to recover with flexibility. It is important to understand that resilient construction is not the same as sustainable construction.

New technological tools and processes use resilient tools and technology to design buildings, communities, or landscapes that respond extremely well to any kind of construction disaster.

Moving from a traditional workflow to a BIM or automated workflow has contributed to the resilience factor. A legacy or traditional retrofit comprises of processes that include limited scalability in terms of –

Data Compilation

Architects, engineers, and various AEC professionals are included in this process wherein a survey records all the measurements of building elements viz. floors, walls, doors, etc. This is the first data stack; the second data stack is collected and analyzed for seismic parameters.

Data Conversion

Vulnerability judgment – Data in terms of vulnerability includes seismic processes like earthquakes, floods, etc.

Structural study – In order to come up with a seismic calculation, structural engineers take into consideration the exact structural configuration of the building or project.

Retrofit outline –As a conclusion of the vulnerability assessment, the architects and engineers come up with a proposal that includes building elements like beams, column, etc. This structural analysis ensures the building is resilient during a natural disaster.

3. Documentation

This process includes the process of creating high-quality documents or document stacks that include crucial information like –

§  Existing building plans

§  Study of structural analysis

§  Retrofit information

§  Building details

§  Cost estimation or BOQ

Construction Process

Once the construction process is complete and approved by all the parties – internal and external, the installation of elements like slabs, walls, and various other elements begins.

With this traditional retrofit method, the project experienced a myriad of bottlenecks that made the whole process inefficient and non-resilient.

§  Absence of an integrated platform for all the stakeholders

§  Manual modeling techniques to include digital models into a retrofit setting

BIM’s contribution in disaster management

New processes like BIM integrated with modern tools and technology optimizes disaster resilience, performance, and sustainability for a construction project. BIM can be referred to as an Information and Communications Technology nerve center that facilitates the use of information at every stage of the project lifecycle.

The deployment of BIM is extremely beneficial for every project phase or lifecycle viz. design, development, FM, and demolition. The role of BIM for pre and post disaster management can be listed as –

Arrival Guide for Fully Vaccinated Travelers inoculated in the Philippines and those vaccinated abroad and coming from “Green” countries

Starting July 1, 2021, travelers who are fully vaccinated in the Philippines regardless of travel history, and those vaccinated abroad who stayed exclusively in “Green” countries/jurisdictions in the past fourteen days immediately preceding arrival must only undergo a 7-day quarantine, and an RT-PCR test administered on the 5th day of their quarantine stay. Fully-vaccinated travelers must carry sufficient proof of their vaccination during their travel. Passengers are considered fully-vaccinated at least 14 days after having received the second dose in a 2-dose series or at least 14 days after having received a single-dose vaccine.

Fully vaccinated individuals shall carry the following as proof of their vaccination status:

(i.) Those fully vaccinated in the Philippines must carry their vaccination card which should be verified prior to their departure by a certification issued through the Certificate of Vaccination Record Portal of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (Travelers who wish to secure a certificate from the DICT may follow the instructions on

.) or the City Health Officer of the local government unit which administered the full vaccination; or

(ii.) Those fully vaccinated in countries/jurisdictions outside the Philippines must carry their official documentation of full vaccination validated through the Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLO), or present their International Certificate of Vaccination, whichever is Applicable.

(iii.) The aforementioned documents must be presented to the dedicated Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ) representative for re-verification at the Department of Transportation One-Stop-Shop (OSS) upon arrival in the Philippines

BEFORE YOU FLY AND DURING CHECK-IN

1. As early as 3 days prior to your departure, register and accomplish to the Electronic Case Investigation Form and save the confirmation e-mail and QR code.

2. Download, print, and accomplish the Affidavit of Undertaking for submission upon arrival in the Philippines. Please ensure to write your address and contact details in the Philippines.

3. Ensure to have a confirmed booking at a hotel accredited by Tourism and Health Agencies. Please click here for the list of Quarantine Hotels in Manila.

4. Upon check-in, sign the Declaration and Waiver Form presented by our check-in agent, indicating that you are healthy and fit to travel.

DURING THE FLIGHT

5. Accomplish the Health Declaration Form, Bureau of Customs Form, and Arrival Card.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

6. Upon arrival, listen to the briefing conducted by the Philippine Coast Guard.

7. Undergo a temperature check, submit the Health Declaration Form upon deplaning, and proceed to the designated waiting area.

8. Proceed to the hotel desk and present your vaccine card and certificate. Hotel coordinators shall verify your hotel booking or assist you in your reservation if you have not made one yet. Please ensure that hotel verifiers have signed or stamped your Affidavit of Undertaking. You shall also make the transportation arrangement to your hotel at these desks. If you have not made a pre-arranged hotel transfer, accredited taxis are available.

9. Proceed to the verification booth. Present your passport and the QR code sent to you after accomplishing the e-CIF. For non-OFWs and non-Filipinos, pay for your RT-PCR test.

For non-Filipinos: In compliance with Philippine regulations, laboratory partners must secure a photocopy of your passport and proof of accommodation/residence in the Philippines.

10. Clear with immigration and submit the Arrival Card.

11. Claim your baggage at the designated carousel and clear with Customs Check. Submit the Bureau of Customs Form.

12. Submit the Affidavit of Undertaking before exiting the terminal. Proceed to your booked hotel through your preferred mode of transportation.

AT THE QUARANTINE HOTEL

13. Check in at your hotel and wait for your scheduled test which is on the 5th day of your quarantine stay.  On the final day of your quarantine, a BOQ officer will assess you for clearance and shall issue you a quarantine certificate.

If you develop COVID-19 symptoms (e.g., dry cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste and/or smell, etc.) at any time before your scheduled test, please inform the hotel you are staying in so a medical or BOQ officer can assess and check up on you immediately. You may be required to undergo an RT-PCR test.

GOING HOME

14. Once cleared, you can call your relatives and respective Local Government Units (LGU) to pick you up or arrange for your transportation going home. You are encouraged to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 in the next seven (7) days.
