Happy Earth Day!!!🌎 Everyday is Earth Day for me!🌎 Although it’s been a while since I’ve last posted, I could not miss this very day. I’ve been on a sustainability journey since 2017…learning, growing🌱, and adjusting my lifestyle to express my beliefs, ideology, and my connection & love for nature. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned on this journey is: you can not force anyone to change. Change must happen within. The greatest change is to lead by example.💫 I’m shocked & happy to say that my family is on board with sustainability, but on their own terms. They have noticed my routines, they have become habits, they knew how much sustainability♻️meant to me and wanted to contribute and become apart of it. I am so very very proud of them!!!Like a drop a water💧, this action of leading by example has rippled immensely and I can really see the change.💫 Here are a few way that I practice sustainability (not sponsored): Food storage: @stasherbag Recycling: Cicero Method Drying time: @traderjoes wool dryer balls. Packaging: @citygirletsy Compostable. Resale: 2nd hand fashion @citygirletsy Deodorant: @heyhumansofficial Coffee:Coffee for here @phlour_chicago Walk🚶🏻‍♀️instead of driving! Straw: paper @kalemyname How do you practice sustainability? #eco #ecofriendly #ecofriendlyliving #ecofriendlyfashion #2ndhandfashion #gogreen #greenfashion #recycle #reducereuserecycle #reuse #savetheplanet #sustainability #sustainable #sustainablefashion #sustainable #lowimpactmovement #lowimpact #intentionalliving #savetheplanet #buyvintage (at Chicago, Illinois) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcqoWYYvrYb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

When energy is low, gentle exercises from bed can be beneficial. These movements promote circulation, strengthen muscles, and improves mobility. It’s crucial to listen to your body’s signals and adjust the intensity accordingly. Movement, even in bed, boosts circulation, alleviates stiffness, and enhances mood. #lowimpactmovement #beginnerworkout #homeworkout #bedyoga #coreworkout

oday we are starting a KNOW THE INGREDIENT series, where every week we will focus on one common ingredient in health and beauty products and analyse the impact of those chemicals on our body and environment. This week let's look at DIOXIN - a common ingredient in sanitary pads, shampoos, soaps, deodorants, cream etc. Dioxin is highly toxic and causes many hormonal and digestive tract issues. It is also believed to contribute to the development of many cancers. While 'any' amount of chemical is not suitable for 'any' part of the body, it is especially notorious for causing reproductive issues. Talk about Dioxin in sanitary pads, so close to the highly porous vaginal area, can be absorbed rather easily and cause major damage. Time to heal the body & mind with nature and natural solutions. #nowasteliving #goingzerowaste #zerowastelife #wastefree #ditchplastic #zerowasteliving #zerowastehome #lessplastic #lifewithoutplastic #zerowastejourney #lowwasteliving #wastefreeliving #ecofriendlyliving #wasteless #reducewaste #reducereuserecycle #thereisnoplanetb #noplanetb #savetheplanet #sustainablelifestyle #lowimpactmovement #sustainabilitymatters #zerowastecommunity #livesustainably #minimalwaste #reduceplasticwaste #earthfriendly #consciousconsumer #goinggreen #wastefreeplanet

When I think about all the things the IE team has cultivated in the last year and a half, I’m *truly* astounded. Between seeing IE + @allbirds posters while walking around in SoHo, to our conversation with a @whitehouse climate advisor, to an Earth Month summit (featuring a keynote from Brenda Mallory, White House Chair of the Council of Environmental Quality!), to creating our first ever publication, to producing a mini-documentary, to in person events, IE School, and so much more; wow what an incredible community we’ve had the opportunity to build 🥺❤️ Currently, we are hosting our first ever fundraiser as a nonprofit, of which Facebook has graciously agreed to match up to $50k. If you’ve been touched or inspired by IE’s work, we would love your support to help us continue offering free programming, create community-building opportunities, and fund our operations. Whether it’s a donation, a share, or just a comment, we appreciate all of your support, and wouldn’t be able to do it without you 🦋✨ 🌿 Graphic by @graphicsandgrain for @intersectionalenvironmentalist [image description: graphic with green text that says ‘Good things grow where you water them’. Has trying zerowaste ever turned you into a hoarder / almost hoarder?
Because that’s been my case lol.
“I can re-use this!” & it’s just been sitting there being unused for months or years. I’ll find a use for it “one day” & I feel too guilty to throw it out. Even taking out what garbage I do have makes me feel guilty. So I wait, and wait, and wait.
And I don’t use “hoarder” lightly. I’m already a messy person, so adding a pang of guilt anytime I had to throw something away, or not knowing how I could give my extra 20-30 glass jars to someone who wanted them was becoming a big problem.
My advice:
1.) do a trash audit, and write down what habits or actions are making this trash
2.) organize these actions in this order: easiest to change - can’t change (ex: medical waste)
3.) find your local no-buy, free stuff, eco-friendly groups so you can give stuff away that you aren’t re-using
4.) recognize that some zero-waste changes will also make you have to address other areas of your life (mental health, time management)
5.) make zero waste work WITH you, not against you. If you feel like you’re forcing yourself to do something that sucks, find another solution - otherwise you might give up altogether
6.) research different solutions for different actions - if the solution is expensive, try to find the cheap / free alternative until you can afford to use what you want (ex: re-using ziploc bags until you can afford stasher bags)
7.) take into account how your living situation impacts these habits (you might be successful at composting, & then move somewhere where you have to learn how you can compost in THIS situation, and that might be a few months and you feel awful for throwing away compostable items) something could be easy one place, and challenging / next to impossible in another. - so actions on the easiest to change - can’t change spectrum can change their places!
I’m sure I can think of other stuff later, but this is it for now. Thanks for reading, please share your advice & experiences if you can relate!

REUSE, REPURPOSE.
Taking a moment to appreciate a full extra day in the calendar to slow down for a minute and clean up after a busy week. I can take stock of what’s happening in the kitchen and feel better balanced with an organized space. As I’m cleaning, the stack of plastic deli containers hanging in the fridge, freezer, and pantry is a good reminder to use what I have on hand before seeking out new materials. These have accumulated over the last two years from unexpected eating out, forgetting a container at the bulk bins, someone sending me home with food. Rather than immediately throw them in the recycling bin I’ve washed and gently reused most of these containers, within an inch of their lives. From saving leftovers, to gifting snacks, storing rubber bands, dry goods, and organizing small objects, I’ve found countless ways to repurpose a traditionally single-use item. I’m sure most of y’all have done the same, but those pictures don’t usually show up in your feed.
Organizing your kitchen doesn’t have to be perfect or look a certain way. It’s ok to hold onto those functional items that do the trick. Extending the life of your material goods goes a long way in reducing our footprint. Shifting into low waste habits like reusing and repurposing what we have before recycling or binning changes your relationship with the materials you come in contact with. Your choice to save your container and pack it in your low waste travel kit for grocery shopping next time is a big step towards a sustainable practice. (And it’s lighter than hauling a glass jar around.) So as we move through this extra day, let’s do so with intention, being mindful of how we spend our time and how we treat the objects that take up residence in our space.
What are you re-using plastic containers for?? #closedloopcooking

🕯 | Today, like many days, I found myself sweating uncontrollably by our nurturing suns inescapable heat. As I reach into my bag for a handy-dandy handkerchief to wipe the sweat from my brow, I am horrified to discover I’ve left my whole prep bag at home. It’s okay to have a hiccup, so long as we learn from our mistakes. My current lesson is to prep my bag the night before at all costs! . . . For those of you who are wondering what is in my daily sustainability prep bag for my on-the-go adventures: Power bank Produce bag Water bottle Handkerchief Charger cord Prepped lunch Tupperware Fork/spoon Metal straw Journal Headphones Book Keys Mirror Fountain Pen Wallet . . . This is my real medicine cabinet. No fakery. Yep there’s still disposable plastic in here. Until I can find a #lowwaste affordable toothpaste with fluoride, there will continue to be toothpaste in disposable plastic. I contacted the sellers of David’s toothpaste online recently. You know, the $10/tube toothpaste in aluminum, with no fluoride and an extra metal thingmabob that is somewhat wasteful. They proceeded to explain to me that fluoride was “poison,” despite the dental benefits of being in water supplies for the last 100+ years. My teeth are cavity prone and need fluoride. When will there be a #zerowaste toothpaste company that creates a fluoride version for a reasonable price?

Did you know that #teabags are not #plasticfree? Because they are compostable, we assume that they must be plastic free. Instead, a small amount of plastic is used to seal the bag. So next time you buy tea, make sure you buy it loose ☕️⁣ .⁣ Photo by Miti on Unsplash⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ ⁣ #slowliving #consciousliving #sustainable #sustainability #sustainableliving #environment #environmental #environmentalism #ecofriendly #greenliving #eco #ecoliving #minimalist #ethical #zerowaste #lowwaste #lowimpact #lowimpactmovement #lowimpact30 #learnminimalism #ig_minimalismo #minimalmood #fairtrade #soulminimalist #mindtheminimal #ic_minimal #zerowastehome #ig_minimalist https://www.instagram.com/greenverden/p/BvtXZt1givw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=182b8zu3dkvwj

Was super excited to see vegan options at the local St Martin's market tonight! And I didn't have to just get the veggie option minus cheese. They had these delicious portobello burgers with vegan cheddar 😍 ▪️ Was disappointed when I handed them my Tupperware and they lined it with their paper because the are not allowed to put food into customer containers 😔 Then they told me that the paper was compostable....which would be great if the town actually had a compost system! ▪️ Anyway the staff were lovely and polite and explained that they don't offer any plastic. So at least that's a good start! 🌍 ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ #vegan #lowwaste #lowimpact #lowimpactmovement #veganburger #yummy #tryyourbest #vegancheese #portobello #stmartin #markt #wintermarket #medievalmarket #lowwastefail #compost #kompost #plasticfree #wecandomore #savetheplanet #ecovegan (at Hessen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqAiChOAtTw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=svugy8pdw0cs

I have a theory 💭 It’s been a minute since I felt that same spark of excitement or inspiration on Instagram, and I’m getting the impression I’m not the only one on here thinking about it 🥵 So here’s my theory: with more folks getting vaccinated that means more people getting outside 🏞 seeing friends 👯‍♀️ and making connections irl. After more than a year of being glued to our phones in quarantine, here’s that reminder that we don’t exist solely to be online. We go back to (hopefully) a healthier, pre-pandemic level of scrolling now that our time is filled with other things that spark joy 😌 If you’re not feeling particularly inspired by what’s on IG right now, it’s probably a good thing ✔️ let me know what things outside of Instagram have been sparking joy for you - for me it’s time in the park, spending time with old + new friends, and soaking up the sunshine ☀️ [image description: @quibe’s single line drawing of a woman hangs on a wall above the pillows on Sabs’ bed.] • • • #intersectionalenvironmentalist #intersectionalenvironmentalism #ie #zerowaste #lowimpactmovement #wastefree #trashfree #plasticfree #nowaste #notrash #noplastic #ecofriendly #sustainable #sustainability #socialactivism #activism #activist #yayforearth #gogreen #art #pandemic #summer #joy #apartmenttherapy #apartmentdecor #minimalism #minimalist #minimal (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPs5R1_n-iI/?utm_medium=tumblr

Anyone else get really annoyed at the mainstream attitude that “good brands will save us”? Like, no they obviously won’t.
And to those who want to comment “no one actually thinks that” - you’re either naïve or in denial. A LOT of mainstream eco-influencers focus so much on brands that they themselves, and their followers, adopt that attitude. Asking for reform is one thing - believing that “good” brands are our heroes is very dangerous. If you recognize that tenancy in yourself, please pause and reflect on it.
