After a longer silence, the girl asked: 'Would you go back? If you could?'
'You mean, without the wave?'
'Yes. Without the wave.'
'Then I'd have gone home, and everyone would have been alive, and I would be a man.'
'Would you rather be that man? Would you change places with him?' asked the ghost girl.
'And not be me? Not know about the globe? Not have met you?'
'Yes!'
Mau opened his mouth to reply and found it choked with words. He had to wait until he could see a path through them.
'How can I answer you? There is no language. There was a boy called Mau. i see him in my memory, so proud of himself because he was going to be a man. He cried for his family and turned the tears into rage. And if he could, he would say "Did not happen!" and the wave would roll backward and never have been. But there is another boy, and he is called Mau, too, and his head is on fire with new things. What does he say? He was born in the wave, and he knows that the world is round, and he met a ghost girl who is sorry she shot at him. He called himself the little blue hermit crab, scuttling across the sand in search of a new shell, but now he looks at the sky and knows that no shell will ever be big enough, ever. Will you ask him not to be? Any answer will be the wrong one. All I can be is who I am. But sometimes I hear the boy inside crying for his family.'
'Does he cry now?' asked Daphne, looking down at the ground.
'Every day. But very softly. You won't hear him.'
--Terry Pratchett, "Nation"
(Hey, if you're a Discworld fan and haven't read this book may I recommend it? Also: hey, if you've heard of this Terry Pratchett guy and how great he is, but think Discworld wouldn't be your thing for one reason or another? May I recommend this excellent book as a gateway to Pratchett's writing? It's about upheaval, and grief, and healing. It is beautifully written, and I swear it'll rip out your heart and then put it back in but different. Or, if your heart has already been stricken, it might offer some solace or hope.)
what kind of cratures do you think the trigun gang would be?
CREATURES IN GENERAL OR SEA CREATURES. BECAUSE MY FRIEND MONTY N I WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT TRIGUN FURSONAS THE OTHER DAY. but i am the sea creature guy at heart so im gonns give u those i hope that is ok 😌 there are many benefits to being a marine biologist.
Vash: he is... so very shark coded to me. everyone looks at him and sees a dangerous killing machine. frequently covered in scars. do u see the connection here. he is specifically a thresher shark to me because of the whole sharpshooter thing and also the sad sad puppydog eyes 💙
Wolfwood: i am torn between two different types of eels for him. giant morays are more aesthetically pleasing but personally i have to go with a wolf eel both for the name and because ive worked with these guys before and theyre sooooo cool so im biased
Meryl: not technically a sea creature because she is just so bird coded to me. White-Tailed Tropicbird
Milly: is it cheating to have two cephalopods on this list. because i think i really want to say giant pacific octopus for milly. either that or a whale shark 💙 yes those are two completely different animals no i will not be taking criticism at this time
bonus Knives because i love him and i feel the most strongly about this one:
BOBTAIL SQUID.
... and also a bristle worm . for what i hope are obvious reasons
In honor of me finally picking a title for it, here's a teeny bit of Eyes So Blue and Hair So Grown for WIP Wednesday :3

“Yasha, you-.”
She raises her brows, curiosity blooming plain by the tilt of her head.
“You asked me…”
And Essek takes a breath, rushes. No turning back.
“You asked me, a bit ago, if I love him.”
The phrase is still such an odd texture on his tongue.
“Caleb.”
That’s much more to his taste.
“I did.”
Yasha’s face lights up as she leans closer, looming with her chin on her hands.
“I did I did. Why? Did you tell him?”
“Not, ah- not….”
Though her enthusiasm strikes a far field from overwhelming, retreat is surely still an option. Worms shoveled haphazardly into their crumpled cans- who is Essek if not a coward.
But- Yasha’s demeanor softens some, simple inquisitiveness again wreathing her face as her shoulders ease.
So Essek draws more air- deep, as if to appreciate the fact he’s able to in the first place. ‘As if’, sure. Not much an approximation.
Lookit what I found at my local Kmart this morning! Finding any Squishmallows in stores here is harder than finding a unicorn. I wish I could have afforded the highland cow one too
I love how I've had the crabs for 8 years now and my mom still spells Scupa phonetically 😭
She sometimes gets bored when labeling Christmas present tags and she'll put the crabs and she always gets Gurkle right (when she remembers his name, he's been "and the other guy" a few times), easily got Speedy, but Scupa is always "Scoopa"
Which makes me think theres a knock off Scupa out there somewhere, an alternate universe maybe where his name is and always was spelt Scoopa
