Greater Sooty Owl

Population: Overall, of least concern.

Location: Eastern Australia

Eyes: Suggests a nocturnal hunter.

Subspecies: 2: Tyto tenebricosa arfaki and Tyto tenebricosa tenebricosa.

Size: Females' length is 41 to 50 cm (16 to 20 in) and weighs 750 to 1,200 g (1.65 to 2.65 lb). The male is smaller and length is 37–43 cm and weighs 500-700 g.

The Sooty Owl (Tyto tenebricosa), also known as the Greater Sooty Owl, is a medium to large owl found in south-eastern Australia, Montane rainforests of New Guinea and have been seen on Flinders Island in the Bass Strait. They are sometimes called Black Owls or Dusky Barn Owls.

Sooty Owls roost in large tree hollows, caves and in dense foliage during daylight hours. Rarely seen or heard, they can be found in areas with deep gullies in moist forests, where smooth-barked gum trees, tree ferns and wet forest under-storey are present. They may hunt in drier areas but usually roost and breed in the moister areas.

They absolutely needed to put a fake Hooty on that door and yet when Camila points out how baffling this is, they have to acknowledge that they don't even understand the compulsive need to add Hooty to the hideout.

Hooty is an instinct to the children, not unlike the fundamental human need to create religion and to tell stories. He's the need young girls feel to create mud potions in their gardens or to decapitate their Barbies. The need for every schoolchild to draw that same graffiti "S"

The Boiling Isles children need Hooty's presence in a way that they don't even understand.

Hooty has burrowed his way into the psyche and hearts of the Hexsquad like the Owl Tapeworm he is and now they will never be able to go without Hooty.
