So one thing I really loved about the first episode of Ms Marvel was this scene at Avengers Con:
Zoe is genuinely excited about how cool Kamala's "costume" (well, powers) is and she's all smiles, legit gushing about it to her face. Look at her being all happy for her!
In a lesser writer's hands, Zoe would have been bitchy and jealous of the attention Kamala was getting and, even though it was cut short, she probably would have won the costume contest solely because of her outfit so the show could slut-shame her for wearing a bodysuit. (On that note, I love that there are depictions of all kinds of ways to dress, whether it's a miniskirt or a hijab, and neither is A Thing because god forbid we just let people dress how they want.)
Heck, I love how well-rounded these characters are so far because of how Bisha K. Ali has written them and how the actors have brought them to life. It's what makes them relatable and proper worth rooting for.
Directors: Adil & Bilall, Meera Menon and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
Mini-review:
I had read a lot of divisive comments about this show, so I didn't expect to like it so much! I just loved how vibrant and colorful it was. Iman Vellani brings a lot of energy to the lead role, she truly has the makings of a star. The plot itself is not that different from other superhero origin stories, but the setting and all the representation makes it feel like something we've never seen before. I'm not going to say it's a perfect show (they tried to fit too much stuff in just six 40-minute episodes, and some characters had 180º changes that made little sense), but its strengths completely make up for any possible flaws. Overall, I think it was a marvelous (pun intended) introduction to this character, and I can't wait to see more of her in The Marvels and other projects.
Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ series adapts the refreshing contemporary origin of a Muslim-Pakistani New Jersey teenage superhero, who worships Captain Marvel, before unlocking her own hidden ancestral superpowers. What follows is the usual but appealing coming-of-age misadventures with some welcome twists.
It’s a fresh take on the well-worn formula with plenty of cultural touches about immigrant families and fitting in. Newcomer Iman Vellani (an Ontario native) is an instant star as the lead, Kamala Khan. Her performance brings such universal charm, humour, and empathy to the complexities of juggling high school and weird mystical powers in a fun metaphor for burgeoning adult/womanhood.

I hadn't seen concept art for the Noor dimension before now and it's beautiful
I'm guessing earlier scripts included Kamala exploring the dimension. I'm actually so sad we never got this.
We all know Kevin Feige woke up one day and decided he needed Kamala to be the first mutant so Sana and Bisha had to rein in the Noor stuff.
I initially wasn't on board with the Noor thing but I warmed up to it. I despise the idea of Kamala being one of infinite mutants. Her inhumanity set her apart, ensured her story stayed grounded, but still allowed her to have her own people. So inhumans>>>mutants hill.
But look how BEAUTIFUL. I need to see it in season 2.
Or I need Kamala's endgame in the MCU in 10 years time to be her and Kamran getting their happy ending and exploring their dimension and being 'home'. Especially since the concept of home has always been something that connected them in the MCU and in the comics.
Ok first off, I want all of the things from AvengerCon, including a Scott Lang podcast.
And, seriously no hate to Mrs. Khan, but of all the fictional matriarchal figures I've seen lately from cultures with heavy expectations and restrictions on the children, she's got by far the best emotional manipulation game. Her guilt-tripping abilities are weapons grade.
I feel so bad for Kamala, who's trying to be at least three different people but keeps feeling like a failure most of the time, in large part because of what looks an awful lot like undiagnosed ADHD to me. That upsets me as someone who was never diagnosed but showed lots of signs as a kid.
This show feels familiar in various ways (there's little notes of Into the Spider-Verse, Turning Red, Encanto, and Hawkeye in there) but it's still got its own uniqueness and a lovely visual palette and music. I'm not going in expecting it to change my world, I'm just going along for the ride.
joote de do paise le lo AND tere bina?? and the whole dance sequence at the sangeet???? aamir and tyesha's marriage is going to be my new comfort scene
