steddie — friends with benefits to lovers drabble
"i just wanna find someone who calls me baby"
rating — teen & up. | tags — fwb to lovers, roommates au, everybody lives/nobody dies, gay steve, gay eddie, mutual pining, friends to lovers, love confessions, angst and hurt/comfort, friends with benefits.
steve's never really had self control. he's never had any when it came to several instances—calling jonathan byers a queer, kissing tommy on a drunken night when he was 15, going straight into an alternate dimension, facing billy hargrove and getting his ass beat, or even telling robin he has feelings for her, soon to find out she's a lesbian, and that he himself is a gay man.
steve's self control surely didn't exist the day steve proposed an... idea to eddie—a no attachment, friends with benefits who bang and get it out of their system type of deal. they're already best friends, deeply bonded from the whole vecna ordeal, so what harm could this do to them?
and now that steve thinks about it, it didn't do a small amount of harm, it practically ruined steve. he fell for eddie, and he's not sure eddie feels the same way.
steve broke his own rule. he found himself attached to eddie, thinking about eddie, talking only about eddie, being in love with eddie.
after steve comes home to their apartment and sees eddie making out with someone on their couch, he starts an argument. he doesn't own eddie, they aren't dating, and eddie's a grown man who can do whatever he wants, but seeing someone else other than himself lay their lips onto eddie's and kiss him, that really starts something inside of steve.
he can practically feel all of the months worth of collected feelings and thoughts bubbling up inside of him and almost spilling out over the sides the second eddie says what he says.
"we're just friends. we're friends, steve. you're you, and i'm me, and that's it," eddie says, arms crossed over his chest, hiding himself away and trying to tuck himself together.
"friends!? fucking—fucking friends, eddie? that's what we are? friends don't do the things we do."
steve scoffs and looks directly at eddie, face going red with anger and a mix of pain inside of him.
eddie looks down, lips pulled into a thin line, eyes downturned and hair hanging down around him, shielding him like a cave hidden behind a waterfall.
"yes, harrington. friends," eddie breathes out, head snapping up. "you act like you want me to say that we're more than that, but you're not into me. you just want to fuck me and act like nothing happened. i can't deal with that. i need someone who loves me, who tells me they need me and will take care of me and isn't disgusted or annoyed by me. that's what i need, not a fuck-buddy."
steve sputters and reaches his hands out, mentally saying fuck it and telling eddie how he really feels.
"eddie, jesus christ! i'm in love with you! i've been in love with you since you woke up from that goddamn coma last year."
eddie's eyes go wide, comically large and round, looking like bambi. he really fucking loves him.
"stop messing around, man."
steve shakes his head, not letting eddie dismiss him and believe it's just some sick joke that he's playing on him.
"why would i lie about loving you, eddie? everything i've done, it's all because of you. do you really think i would tell you this and compromise our friendship if i didn't feel just like i'm telling you now?"
eddie's mouth opens and closes like a dead fish, and he finally shuts it fully. "i, i don't—"
"if you don't love me back, that's okay. i just had to tell you, eds. you don't understand how much you mean to me," steve confesses, lips pulled into an apologetic smile. he goes and turns to walk out the door of their apartment,
eddie shoots out his arm, hand grabbing onto steve's forearm, squeezing, trying to stop him from leaving. "steve! fuck, i love you, too! i do, i really, really do. and, look, i didn't know how to tell you, because you're always being so frustratingly you, clearly not understanding all the hints i've dropped, trying to signal that i've been in love with you for months, too."
eddie licks his lips and his eyes seem to plead.
"really?" steve asks, hope bubbling up inside of him.
he nods, hair shaking around. "yeah, stevie. cross my heart and hope to die. i mean it. swear on it, even."
steve smiles at that.
"swear on what, exactly?" he knows the line he's crossing, and if eddie says what steve thinks he'll say, then steve knows it's true.
"on my guitar. my sweetheart. you know the one. i swear on her," eddie tells him, eyes flipping down to steve's lips and back up to meet his eyes.
"that's a big swear, munson. might need you to kiss me to prove it," steve teases, stepping in closer to eddie's bubble, noses almost touching.
eddie grins, wider that steve has seen for as long as he can remember. "i can do that."
he certainly swears on his guitar if the kiss that they shared proves anything.
whoops i suck at endings and writing in general, but this has been stuck in my head and i felt like trying to write. here it is. love you xx

holy fuck slow and steady does win the race bc i acshually like i'm vomiting screaming i think i'll be so ashamed if it flops but i have to present my steddie playlists which have taken me LITERAL YEARS.... to be satisfied with. but blah blah i feel this is a viewing experience for ME
the premise is two playlists that are two sides of the same story set post season 2 (222). side a is eddie and side b is steve. BASICALLY after the stancy break up and the billy beat down, steve is back to the party scene. he's drinking and hooking up and trying to get his head out of the tunnels. and soon he's just drinking until he doesn't dream anymore. maybe something different would help. enter: eddie munson. maybe he's a safe haven and an unlikely listener. or maybe he's just steve's dealer. either way, they end up kind of... liking each other ...?
steve has come to terms with his fascination with nerds, so he gets with the program real quick. eddie munson thinks too hard and doesn't get it for a while. but they get there in the end. ANYWAYS once i figure it out i will link the playlists and also commentary on the songs.
side a side a: eddie munson
side b side b: steve harrington
which NOTE NOTE idk why i was soooo obsessed with it but there are 20 songs that play for 86 minutes in each playlist.

billy absolutely has a mixtape specifically for sex, right?? like. that man is ALWAYS playing music…getting his brains smashed out would be no exception, surely. this will be how max finds out he and steve are hooking up. catches them making breakfast in the morning and steve manages to explain away wearing one of billy’s band shirts. he’s not as successful trying to convince her he already knew the song Pour Some Sugar On Me.
yes yes yes
PLEASE this is so funny
max has seen and heard way too much (and she most definitely bitches about it to el good for her)
her walking in on steve singing and being all i didn’t know you liked that band and (half asleep) steve selling them both out by asking billy why his sister is asking him about fucking leopards at 8 in the morning
billy wants to be annoyed about steve’s complete inability to stay cool but he’s laughing because where the hell did he even find this guy ??
see also: steve and billy trying to merge their music
billy telling steve that no he doesn’t want to get fucked to careless whisper and that he will leave steve here like this swear to fuckin’ god and steve telling billy that metallica is giving him performance anxiety

Okay so I watched ep.4 of s4 "Dear Billy" and I have thoughts... specifically thoughts about what would go down in the series if Billy was alive.
So I think it would be kinda obvious that he would be in Max's spot with the whole getting Vecna'd thing (Max would still be alive obvio Billy is just built different and survives the Mind Flayer). Then that whole Dear Billy scene happend and I started thinking even more of how it would go down if Billy was in Max's place. Obviously the letter would be to his mom, because why would it be for Neil? But then comes the question, where would Billy go to read this letter? If his mom is dead why would there be a grave in Hawkins for her, that doesn't make sense. So imagine they're all driving and Billy randomly says "turn here" and everyone is like "that's the woods?" and he knows that's the woods and he stil makes them turn there.
Insert Billy walking into this small clearing in the woods where he's made a makeshift grave for his mother because he has absolutly no idea where the fuck she is and for all he knows, she could be dead. WHICH IS SO FUCKING SAD. And then I started thinking about that scene between Vecna!Billy + Max and how he's saying Max feels guilty that she's glad that Billy's dead and like with Billy what if it's Vecna posing as Billy's mom and just kinda of berating him about what he's turned into due his father's abuse like: "Billy... my sweet Billy, what have you turned into? I don't even know who you are anymore... you look so much like your father... Billy I'm scared of you" And Billy is just sobbing
I would cry. I would cry like a shit ton.

'Speechless'
Pairing: Harringrove. A lil angst, but mostly fluff.
(Fluff isn't really my forte, so forgive me for this mess. I've just always wanted to write a Christmas fic, and Harringrove is the perfect couple for that.)
Modern!AU.
Billy gets the birthday/Christmas he's always deserved from the family he didn't know he needed until he found.
Growing up, Billy always dealt with other kids gushing over the fact his birthday was Christmas. They'd drone on and on about how they'd definitely get double the presents for the day.
Billy always wanted to scream at them that he's never gotten a single present in his life. He never got a Christmas gift, or a birthday gift from his mother or father. They never even brought a tree or put up any decorations. Eventually he stopped bringing up his birthday to people.
Though, older Billy would laugh and confess on his tenth birthday, he did get something. It wasn't anything good, it was probably the most terrible thing he'd experienced short of his father's backhand.
That day, his mom had woken him up, pressed a kiss to his forehead and whispered that she'd always love him. She took him into her arms and buried her face in his curls, hugging him against her chest like it was the last time she'd ever see him again.
She'd left a shoe box at the foot of his bed, he didn't know it yet, but it was filled with the things she always held close to her heart.
It was early, the sun hadn't even come out yet, making it dark in his room.
Billy, half asleep, just hugged his Mama back, mumbling his own variation of "I love you" as he dozed off in her arms.
When he woke up again, the sun was out, and his father was angrily throwing his mother's remaining belongings on the curb. He remembers spending the day in bed crying, hoping his Mama would come back for him.
He cried his little heart out, and if anyone besides Neil had been privy to the broken hearted sobs, they would've tried to comfort him. Wouldn't they? Billy guesses not.
So, yeah, Billy got his first ever gift at ten years old, in the form of his mother abandoning him with the man she always vowed to take him away from. To protect him from.
At almost seventeen, Billy no longer lives in California, he lives in Hawkins Indiana, with his father, his father's new wife, and her daughter.
Max is only two years younger than Billy.
His dad had met Susan a nine months or so after his mother left, and they married before reaching a full year of dating.
Her daughter, Max, was cool for a snot nosed nine year old.
She wanted Billy to teach her to skate, after days of begging, he finally agreed.
Less than two minutes after she'd climbed onto the board, she wiped out.
Billy remembers sprinting over to her with shaky hands. Scared out of his fucking mind that she was hurt, but before he could start fretting over her, she simply stood up, dusted herself off and hopped back on the skateboard.
Billy never told her, but he was impressed with how well she caught on.
Their relationship as siblings was tumultuous from the start, but Max had grown on him, and Billy would set the world aflame for that red-haired brat.
Max as she got older, started to notice the less than parental ways Neil treated his son.
It was hard to hide even the quietest of sobbing courtesy of black eyes and bruised ribs from the girl who slept in the room beside yours.
It was even harder to hide the fact you never had a thing to open on Christmas.
They put a tree up every year, but Billy was always absent for the decorating portion as per Neil's demand.
Max and Susan didn't even know when Billy's birthday was, let alone that it was on Christmas, until they moved to Hawkins and Susan had been the one to enroll him in classes. It was only July when they arrived in Hawkins, months away from his birthday.
They hadn't mentioned it, so Billy didn't either. He honestly thought they'd just forgotten.
Which was fine, because he's gone this long without the acknowledgement of his birthday, what difference did it make now?
Things between them changed when they moved though, Max had found real friends, she no longer needed Billy around to defend or protect her. Her friends were fierce on that front. She just didn't seem to need Billy anymore.
Her friend group was cool enough for a bunch of little brats, Billy had hung with them on more than one occasion.
Through said group, Billy met Steve, who in a matter of weeks, had asked Billy out on a date. Things were rocky for the first couple of weeks, if for no reason than Billy reluctance to let people into his personal bubble.
However, it came as a surprise when Max barged into his room two days before Christmas and practically begged him to drive her to Steve's house for an emergency D&D session.
Even if Billy hadn't already been planning to see his boyfriend, he would have agreed to take her, if only to spend some time together.
The sun had already set by the time the siblings were in Billy's Camaro, a blur of trees in the wake of them speeding down the road.
"You know, you should join us one day for D&D." Max's tone was casual, but Billy's known her long enough to be able to tell she was nervous to bring it up.
For what? Billy wasn't exactly sure. She seemed antsy the whole drive. Maybe D&D was more intense than he thought.
"You want me to play D&D with you and the nerd brigade?" He glanced over at her briefly, a brow raised before his attention flickered back to the road ahead of them.
Max let out a squawk, a small pout on her lips. "Yes! You never hangout with me anymore. I know you're like the coolest kid in school, but you're supposed to be my best friend!"
Her arms crossed over her chest as she flopped against the seat.
"You're so dramatic, shitbird. I'm still your best friend, we just have other friends now."
Billy was shocked to hear that Max saw him as her best friend, especially now that they only spoke on the drive to and from school, and whenever their parents left them home alone for longer than a few hours.
But, he also felt a warmth spread through him at the confirmation that his sister still wanted to be around him.
"I know we do, which is why you should hangout with us too! Steve always steals you away to be with him and Robin when we're all together."
Billy couldn't deny that, Steve did monopolize his time when he was actually present at get-togethers.
"I hear you, alright? We'll spend more time together. You'll be sick of me before you know it." A playful smirk formed on his lips as they pulled into Harrington's driveway, but Max was beaming at him like he'd given her a million dollars. Soon his smirk was a genuine smile.
Trekking the walkway to the door was cold, and Billy was regretting not layering up the way Steve always badgers him to. It wouldn't matter long though, the elder's house was always adequately warmed whenever Billy crossed the threshold. Sometimes he wondered how his boyfriend could stand the stuffy heat confined inside.
When Steve yanked the door open, Billy wasn't even given the chance to complain about how long he took, before shouts of "Surprise!" were silencing him.
His eyes were wide as he tore his eyes away from the doorway full of people to Max, "Merry Birth-Mas?"
The girl just shrugged at him, a sheepish grin on her face as she shoved him inside of the house.
Billy, who was at Steve's just last night was met with the sight of dozens of party streamers, and balloons. There was a tree up that hadn't been there yesterday, void of any decorations.
Billy didn't know it, but Steve intended for them to decorate it together when everyone left.
It wasn't until Steve was pulling him aside to give him a proper greeting, one full of forehead kisses and tight hugs, that Billy finally said, "what the hell is all this?"
Steve merely shrugged, his lips pulling into a small smile, "it's the birthday slash Christmas celebrations you've deserved your whole life. Just rolled up into one party, because seventeen parties is apparently 'impractical'." His tone towards the end of his sentence told Billy that Steve might've been trying to throw that many parties, but was probably overruled by everyone else.
Billy, in response just rolled his eyes and buried his face in the crook of Steve's neck, giggling to himself when the taller boy winced at the ever present cold from Billy's nose, but he didn't pull away.
After being made to eat his weight in delicious food made by Joyce Byers, Billy was forced to sit on the couch while everyone dropped various gifts into his lap.
He sat there frozen for a moment, unsure of what he was supposed to do.
It could've been seconds or minutes later, but eventually Billy grabbed one with a shiny vibrant red wrapping. The name tag read "To: Billy. My shithead brother.
From: Max. Your shitbird sister.♡"
He breathed out a laugh as he looked up at her, softly shaking his head.
It took him another moment of admiring the gift in his hand, and the pile that lay just for him, a foreign sight, before he was tearing into the paper. He wanted to persevere it, cherish it. But, even he knew that would be weird.
Inside was a vinyl record of Metallica's HARDWIRED...TO SELF-DESTRUCT. He owned one in California, but his dad had shattered in an effort to punish Billy for nearly missing curfew.
He wanted to shove all the other presents aside and hug her, but he refrained, instead settling for a 'Thank you' accompanied by a bright smile.
It had taken him almost an hour, but he had eventually made his way through the pile of gifts. They seemed to grow every time the ones in his lap dwindled.
Soon, he was the new owner of random, yet thoughtful shit.
A new basketball, and pump from Lucas. A D&D guide set from Dustin. D&D figurines from Will.
Mike and Jane got him a few band tees, the pair had decided to just put theirs together when they realized they had similar ideas.
Joyce and Hopper had gotten him new colognes and hair products.
There was way more stuff. He had yet to open the first ones from Jonathan and Nancy, but Billy found himself overwhelmed by it all.
Joyce, always the lifesaver, seemed to notice, and declared that Billy could open the rest later.
Before anyone could object, she was rushing into the kitchen to grab everyone a snack.
Billy took that time for what it was, and peeled off to Steve's room. He left the door cracked slightly, knowing Steve was likely to follow him up. For several reasons, like he always followed behind. And, he had yet to give Billy his present.
It's not like he needed one from the brunet, he was more than content with what he'd gotten now. It's more than he could say for younger Billy.
But, he could see the death grip Steve hand on the neatly wrapped present in his hand.
As predicted, by the time Billy had swapped his jeans for a pair of Steve's sweatpants, the elder was slipping into the room, the door shutting just barely behind him.
"Getting comfortable before eating all that cake?"
Billy thought it over for a moment before shaking his head, "I think if I ate a piece of cake I'd explode, Pretty Boy. My jeans were killing me."
Steve just laughed before setting the parcel in his hand down, immediately wrapping the smaller boy into his arms for the second time that night.
His nose nuzzled into Billy's curls as Billy's arms wrapped around his waist, his face pressing into Steve's chest. He took a moment to just breathe him in. He always smelled good. Always smelled like coming home after a hard day. He smelled like love, and safety. If safety had a smell, it'd smell like whatever soaps or shampoos Steve used. And a hint of sweet pea perfume that only Billy knew Steve owned.
Billy was the reason he brought it to begin with.
It was a rather short minute of embrace if you asked Billy, but he couldn't voice his disdain before Steve was thrusting the gift he came in with, into Billy's hands. "I feel like I should preface this by saying that this is only one of the gifts I got you, but you'll get the others on your actual birthday.
It's not the best one of the bunch, but…"
He was blushing as he spoke, his fingers nervously fiddling with a loose strand on his sweater.
"I wouldn't care if you gave me socks, Princess. They'd be the best damn pair of socks ever."
His joke was rewarded with a big smile from his boyfriend, but it was short lived because moments later the boy was all but shouting, "okay, now open it! I can't wait any longer."
Billy looked up at him with a devious smirk, his brows raising twice when he notes the exact moment Steve realized he made a mistake in sharing his own anticipation.
"Hm, I wonder what it could be!" He raised it to his ear, giving it a soft jingle, only to pout when the box gave away little to no sound. "Well, it's not maracas." His faux disappointment had Steve throwing his head back in laughter, "nah, sorry. That's one of your other gifts, baby. Now hurry up before they think we're fucking up here."
Billy let out a laugh of his own, clicking his tongue, "yeah, well Max is leaving with the Byers, later. Your ass is mine tonight." He pauses, "or rather my ass is yours, huh?"
Steve reaches out and slaps his shoulder. "Just open the gift, asshole."
Finally, he tears the paper off, it reveals a shiny box, it looks expensive. Handcrafted. Delicate.
Billy is almost afraid to open it, but he does anyway.
A small, startled gasp leaves his lips when the small box begins to play the tune of 'Speechless' by Michael Jackson. It was the song that played on the radio during the drive to the restaurant on their first date.
They sang along, loudly, carelessly and happily, stealing glances at one another when they thought they could get away with it.
The song had quickly become their song. They listened to it together whenever they got the chance. Which was often.
When the song reached its end, Billy gently set the music box down on Steve's bedside table, almost immediately flinging himself into his partner's awaiting arms. The music played out quietly in the background.
Steve didn't hesitate or falter, he just held Billy close to his chest, swaying their bodies lightly.
Again, they were content to just hold one another, dancing lazily to the song, but the moment was short-lived thanks to Nancy banging on the door.
"Hey, assholes! Get out here so Billy can open mine and Jonathan's gifts, not to mention the rest of the ones from the kids. Joyce convinced us to wait, but times up!"
She left no room for argument, so Steve just held his hand out for Billy to take in his. "Ready, Birthday Boy?"
Billy rolls his eyes, but takes the offered hand anyway, softly hip checking the taller.
"I'm as ready as I'll ever be, Pretty Boy." He pauses while Steve opens the door, but continues when they cross the threshold. "Thank you for today. I know everyone played a part, but you're always gonna be the best part of anything for me."
Steve grins down at him, dropping a kiss to the crown of his head,
"This is just the beginning, baby. It's you and me."

Saw a drawing of Steve and now I'm suddenly thinking about artist Eddie who designed the Hellfire shirts and Corroded Coffin fliers and who draws the villains of his D&D campaigns to slap onto his DM screen for visual aid and doodles in class and-
And i'm thinking about Steve, in a relationship with Nancy, trying to ignore that things are rocky but knowing it all the same. He finds a notebook left behind in school and he only takes it because he forgot his own. He plans to use it for the day and then figure out whose it is and get it back to them in exchange, that's probably more than fair, right? And the person is really gonna want this back - it looks like half their life is contained in this thing; there is... a shit ton of loose paper stuffed between the pages and notes on all kinds of subjects and drawings and.... he doesn't even know what that is. Who is Vecna and what the hell is a... lich?
Anyway as he leafs through it he finds that some of the drawings are... actually really good. Like, absurdly good for being in a lined notebook that looks like it has taken a trip into a dumpster and picked up some debris on the way out.
Like! Those hands! Steve has no artistic bone in his body but he's heard people whine about drawing hands and - he looks at the hand not holding the book and back again - yeah, that's exactly what hands look like! And here - a few pages further (it's one of the most empty pages of the whole thing, mostly because this one seems to have started as a drawing and not as a page of notes that turned into a drawing) there are only a few lines on the page but it's still very clearly the back of someone's neck, the collar, one shoulder.... Then there's another one that is almost all lines, but they were all carefully placed to give the effect of perfectly windswept hair. Then there's one that he actually can't make sense of at first (he almost pages past it because it is just a few lines and dots taking up a quarter of a page of very annoyed... history notes? Maybe English.) It's just a jawline with some moles but... only the day before he had cut himself shaving a finger's width underneath those exact moles. And that's when it clicks. He goes back to the hair... yeah that- that could be him too. Maybe. He flips back to that one very detailed drawing of hands and... putting down the book he tries to get his hands into the same position - the angle is off but. Yeah. That's why they looked so perfectly...! Uhhhh... Handsy! Because they're his fucking hands!
Anyway Steve realizes that about a third of the drawings are or could be him. He realizes that he actually can't go through with giving it back because - what would he even say? "Hey found your notebook, nice shrine to me?" Yeah no. But he's... also reluctant to take it to the Lost and Found. There's something in the handwriting.... He has a feeling that it might not be a girl secretly drawing him. What if someone else connects the dots? What if they confront the mystery artist about it? Flashbacks to his fight with Jonathan, the line he crossed and immediately regretted. He doesn't want to be the cause for someone else getting called that. And unrelated to that, things with Nancy aren't great right now and it's... it's just nice to think someone is paying attention, alright?
Then Halloween happens a few days after. The Break-up(?), the demodogs, Billy and the tunnels- and afterwards it's nice to have the notebook to distract him from the pain. The mundane mystery of a schoolmate maybe having a crush on him. He might not even have to confront them - he can just figure out a way to slip it into their locker; it looks like at least half their schoolwork is crammed into this thing, no matter how half-heartedly done. They definitely want this back.
Man, I wish I could actually write this thing. Damn. Maybe I could even do a scene where Steve tries to Sherlock Holmes his way to Mystery Artist and confronts a (hatefully seething) Robin, because she sits behind him in that one class, only to find his own Watson in her instead. But alas. It cannot be.

Im a very indecisive person but I guess I'll go with “Surprise, I have feelings and you just hurt them.” with Eddie, if you have any inspiration for this prompt 💕
ty for requesting!! — you get mean when you like someone, so eddie thinks you hate him (grump!reader, enemies to lovers, hurt/comfort, shameless succession reference, 1.9k)
“Please, tell me you’re joking,” you mumble through the melting vanilla shake on your tongue.
Robin grins at you across the table and shakes her head. “Nope,” she says, popping the p. “You are officially looking at Vicki Carmichael’s latest odyssey.”
You and Eddie look over your shoulder at Steve. He stands at the front counter and fumbles with the straw dispenser — hitting the lever repeatedly, with an increasingly rougher touch when nothing comes out. He flounders when they all spill out at once.
He’s lucky he’s so pretty.
“Wait, I’m confused,” Eddie announces from beside you after stealing a sip of your milkshake. He squints and fights off a brain freeze. “Why didn’t he just tell us? He’s screwing the hottest girl in town— it feels like something he’d brag about.”
“I’m sitting right here,” you scoff, mostly kidding.
“‘Cause he knew you guys would totally ream him for it,” Robin answers and pinches fry crumbs into her mouth. Through a mouthful of them, she says, “It’s not like you’re usually supportive about this kinda stuff.”
“I’m all for Steve being a slut, okay?” you defend with your hands up in surrender. “But I do draw the line at my best friend fucking the girl who bullied me in high school.”
“What’d she do?” Eddie asks. You can’t tell if he really cares or if he just wants something new to laugh at you for, but you decide to humor him anyway.
“She cut out the boobs of my gym shirt before class because she knew if I dressed out again, I was getting detention,” you explain, smiling when it makes the table laugh. “I had to run the mile with my bright pink sports bra showing, but at least my record was clean.”
“What are you guys talking about?” Steve wonders aloud when he returns to the table, carrying the only straw that hadn’t fallen to the floor. He slides into the booth next to Robin and looks at the three of you expectantly.
“Nothing.” the brunette girl chirps.
“You,” Eddie deadpans.
You squint. “Real smooth, Munson.”
“Wait, what?”
Eddie laughs. “I mean, Vicki Carmichael? Seriously?”
Steve gapes at Robin, features yawned in betrayal. “You told them?”
The girl shrugs, taking a big bite of her burger and playing coy.
“She’s hot and everything, but she’s really not your type, man.”
Steve’s eyes narrow across the table. “What’s that supposed to mean, freak?”
“She likes bad boys,” you answer for him, shrugging like it’s obvious. “You know, the Billy Hargrove types. With tattoos and leather jackets and long hair. And, no offense, but you’re the furthest thing from that.”
“I think you just described me, doll,” Eddie laughs.
“Weren’t you screwing around with Billy Hargrove a couple months ago?” Steve wonders with a knowing, honeyed squint.
“Shut up, Harrington,” you bite.
Eddie grins with all his teeth, pink and boyish and proud. “Oh, so you’re screwing guys that are just like me now, huh? I’m flattered.”
“If anything, you’re the dollar store version of Billy Hargrove, Munson,” you retort with a roll of your eyes, turning your attention to the milkshake in front of you. You stab holes in the thick ice cream and try to ignore the sudden attention.
All the eyes on you make you nervous. You were never good at being the butt of the joke. ‘Cause when you get embarrassed, you get mean. Like some kinda hurt dog.
“You have everything but the looks.”
“Fuck off,” Eddie snorts and snatches the frosted glass away from you. He slides it over to his side of the table and sips from the straw that has your lipstick stained on the tip of it. “You can’t insult me—”
“Can’t I?”
“—Not when you’re fucking a carbon copy of me,” he scoffs and tries to ignore the jealousy burning wildfires behind his ribcage.
“He’s nothing like you,” you insist.
“He’s exactly like me. Just blonde. And watered down,” Eddie argues, face twisted with disgust. He smiles when it makes everyone else laugh but you. “I mean, it’s kinda sad, actually. I turned you down, so you had to try it out with Hargrove?”
“I didn’t try it, first of all, I fucking conquered it,” you retort, not exactly joking but grinning when it makes Steve and Robin chuckle to themselves. “And second of all, I never wanted you, Munson. So there was never anything to turn down.”
Your words sting somewhere deep in his chest. Like there’s a knife lodged deep in his heart that aches every time he breathes. He doesn’t know what to do with this hurt other than hurt you back.
“So that night you told me you liked me after my show— that was all a lie?” he asks, smirking to hide his ache.
Robin’s eyes go wide as she bites into her burger. “What is this? A sleepover?” she scoffs with her mouth full. “Why is everyone telling each other’s secrets?”
“You started it, Buckley,” Steve quips before stealing one of her fries.
Your answer is immediate. A total lie, but instant nonetheless. No one’s gonna out-insult you. Rarely ever do you come out of petty arguments without having drawn the most blood.
“Yeah! You bombed, and I felt bad, and I wanted to make you feel better,” you confess with a sinister giggle. “What I really wanted to say is that I wish your mom had given birth to a can opener because at least then it might be good at something.”
Eddie meets your smirk with a glower, something genuinely pained that makes your chest sting. You refuse to show it, though. Not even when he slides out of the booth. “Yeah, okay. Fuck you,” he mumbles to himself as he goes.
“What?” you scoff a cynical laugh.
“C’mon,” Steve murmurs quietly to you. “That was a little too far.”
“Oh, so he can make fun of me, but I can make fun of him?”
“It’s different. You know that.”
You roll your eyes even though you know he’s right. Eddie’s a clown, but he means well. He’s a dumbass because he doesn’t know how to be serious about anything, but he’s hardly ever outright mean.
You’re made of something more hardened than that. You set fires all around you, and only when a person walks through it do you know they really care. You don’t mean to be so mean half the time. It’s a defense mechanism more than anything. A time-bomb you never really learned to defuse.
“It was a joke, Eds!” you shout as he storms the short distance to the entrance of the diner.
“Well, surprise. I have feelings—” he grins, though there’s little emotion behind it. The door dings over his head when he shoves it open. He reaches for the crushed packet of cigarettes in his pocket. “—And you just hurt them.”
The diner feels strangely silent with him gone. The air feels noticeably heavy, too.
You reach for the milkshake he left on his side of the table and slide it audibly back over to you. You don’t sip from it, though. Your stomach’s too much in knots now. You just busy your fidgeting hands with it, holding the frosted glass in your delicate palms until they ache.
“Stop staring at me,” you mumble, not meeting the silent looks Robin and Steve give you across the booth.
“Go talk to him before you give him a complex.”
“Yeah,” the boy hums with a knowing smile. “Go kiss and make up.”
“Shut up,” you bite with a scrunched-together face. You deflate with a sigh. “Fine. I’ll go— but not because you told me to.”
You hear them laugh quietly to themselves as you walk out behind Eddie.
He leans against the corner of the old building and blows smoke from his lungs. He looks relatively unfazed despite the circumstances. You swallow down the worry that you’re embarrassing yourself by being out here at all.
Your shoes scuff against the sidewalk as you near him. “Eds—”
“I’m fine,” he interjects before you can say anything real. “You don’t need to apologize.”
“Well, it’s too late. Steve and Robin already kicked me out here, so…” You trail off in a monotone, despite having already declared that you were out here not because you were told to be. He doesn’t need to know that, though. “…I’m sorry.”
He takes a puff of the cigarette between his fingers, then shrugs on the exhale. “Okay.”
“The can opener thing was stupid— I mean, it wasn’t nice either, but it was a really dumb joke,” you ramble without taking a single breath. You cross your arms over yourself in a makeshift shield. “You didn’t even bomb that night. At your show or whatever. I lied. You were… You were actually really good.”
Eddie turns his head slowly. He blinks at you with chocolate eyes sparkling with amusement.
You cower under his stare. “What?”
“I know what you’re doing,” he insists with a crooked smile.
“What?” you repeat, forcing a laugh.
“You’re fucking with me,” he chuckles and brings the cig back to his mouth. He mumbles through the stick. “But it’s cool, you know? I can cope.”
“I’m being serious, Eddie,” you argue. And then, when your chest starts to sting, it becomes impossible not to make a joke. “I think you’re a… super-talented superstar—”
“You’re such a fucking bitch,” he interjects with a sincere laugh, like honey and gunpowder.
You giggle, and the foreign tension ebbs.
“I’m just kidding,” you assure and prop your back against the wall beside him. “Well, I mean, I’m not, but I…” You stammer when you can’t find the words. You gesture wildly with your hands. “I do think you’re talented, it’s just— It’s hard for me to be serious, okay? But I am sorry.”
“It’s okay,” he assures, tossing the cigarette to the ground and snuffing the ash with his sneaker. “Trust me. I know what you mean.”
You swallow hard. “And I wasn’t… What I said to you that night, in your van after the show… I wasn’t lying.”
Eddie’s head snaps up. He blinks at you with a gaping gaze, even though you’re not looking at him to see it. You’re much more focused on the dumpster across the street, lest you meet his eyes and get embarrassed all over again.
This is the realest you’ve ever been with him, you think — since you told him you liked him and he all but turned you down.
Being vulnerable has been impossible since then.
“Then why’d you never talk to me about it again?” he asks, then stammers over himself. “You acted like it never even happened— I thought I fucking— like, dreamt it or some shit.”
“Because you didn’t say anything back! I thought you didn’t feel the same way!”
“I was just— I was just shocked. You always act like you hate me!”
“Because I like you, you idiot!” you blurt before you mean to, then huff with impatience at yourself. “Fuck. Sorry. I don’t know… I don’t know how to be nice to people I like.”
“It’s okay,” Eddie laughs, shifting on the brick wall until his shoulder rubs against it. He looks down at you like he’s seeing you for the very first time — glittering with the hope of finally getting close to you, of finally having something real.
“Don’t laugh!” you argue. “I’m trying really hard here!”
“I know,” he murmurs lowly, leaning in until you can taste the nicotine on his breath. In a honeyed tone, he confesses, “It’s a good thing I like you mean, then, huh?”
Your heart lurches into your throat. He smirks when you freeze, and knocks his shoulder against yours when he heads back into the diner.
The game of cat and mouse continues.

Steve ends up heartbroken, lonely and depressed after season 2. Nancy called him bullshit, even after he ditched all his old friends for her. Billy Hargrove took his spot at the top of the food chain. He can have it, Steve doesn't really want it anymore. But Steve does want to find some sort of connection. Someone to have in his life who isn't an 11 year old kid he barely knows. He tries to go on a date one night, take a nice-seeming girl to a party. He wants to find connection, to kill the loneliness that's been building for months, but just as he's feeling kind of good about things, his date ditches him.
So. He decides to drink his feelings. He gets majorly fucked up, and ends up laying on the ground in the backyard, contemplating how much life seems to hate him.
Only to literally get tripped over by Eddie Munson, who was at this party selling pot and is very confused as to why Steve Harrington is alone on the ground with a bottle of vodka clenched in one hand.
Eddie ends up chatting a little with Steve, nothing substantial, but enough to know that Steve is very very drunk, and also very very sad.
He asks if Steve wants to go back to the party, and Steve staunchly refuses. He doesn't want to be around a bunch of annoyingly happy people.
He asks if Steve needs a ride home, and Steve just kind of shrugs. His parents just left for another trip, so home is kind of depressing right now too. But he doesn't exactly have any other friends he can stay with so. Home it'll have to be.
Only Eddie can *tell* he doesn't really want to go home, though he has no idea why Steve wouldn't want to return to his veritable mansion after a shitty night. The reason doesn't matter much. He offers to let Steve crash at his place. Steve can take the couch, or hell he can stay in Eddie's room if he doesn't mind sharing, that way he wouldn't risk being woken up when Wayne comes home that morning.
And well, Steve agrees. Can't think of any reason not too. Munson has been nice so far, he's got a good easy-going energy that Steve likes. Why not stay the night.
By the time they get to Eddie's, Steve is *slightly* more sober. Not much, but he's slurring his words a little less, and he can walk with only a little help.
Eddie grabs them each a little plate of leftovers, because he has no idea if Steve's eaten at all. It's quiet while they eat, Eddie doesn't push Steve to talk, and Steve isn't sure what to say. Eventually Eddie sets the plates aside and give Steve an easy grin.
"So, do you want the couch, or are you crashing with me?"
Steve thinks about it for a while. He hasn't shared a bed with a guy-friend since he was a kid, and he's heard rumors about Eddie, whispers in the hall about the way he looks at other guys. But...Steve can't really bring himself to care. He's tired, and he really doesn't want to be alone.
"I don't mind sharing."
Eddie sets them both up in his room, letting Steve choose which side of the bed he wants, and they both settle in. There's a respectable distance between the two of them, and Eddie says a quick goodnight to Steve, figures they won't talk and just go right to bed.
Except Steve isn't sober, and he really isn't in a good headspace, so he can't stop himself from blurting things out into the quiet of the dark room.
"Are you really gay?"
Eddie stiffens next to him, he can feel it, he can hear the way that the other boys breath cuts off and he seems to stop breathing all-together.
"It's okay if you are, I'm not going to be an asshole about it, I'm trying not to be that guy anymore. I guess I was just curious."
It's quiet for another beat before Eddie seems to loosen just a little. He starts breathing again at least.
"Yeah I uh- I am. Gay. And if that's weird the couch is still open, I can-"
"It's not weird."
"Okay."
Steve let's himself mull over this confirmation, and then his mouth starts moving again, without his permission.
"Is it lonely? Cause I mean, it's got to be hard to date in Hawkins. People here are shitty. Unless you've got like, a secret boyfriend or something."
"No...no secret boyfriend. It does get a little lonely sometimes. I'm lucky though, I've got my uncle, and my friends are pretty great. That's enough most days."
"What do you do when it's not enough?"
"Hmmm?"
"When your uncle and friends aren't enough, what do you do? To try and...make it better?"
Eddie is quiet again for a long stretch before he shrugs.
"I try to focus on something else. I'll play my guitar or work on a new campaign, read a book. Something to take my mind off it."
"Oh."
Now Steve is the one who seems tense, his jaw is tight and he's got his arms wrapped around himself. His next words come out as a whisper, but Eddie manages to catch them.
"I don't know how to do any of that."
He sounds almost choked, and Eddie is caught off guard. He's never seen Steve Harrington as anything other than solid, as happy. He's the king, after all. He's supposed to be all smiles and great hair. Only...Eddie's noticed that he hasn't hung out with his old friends lately, that he's eaten alone at lunch too many times to be anything other than strange.
"Steve...are you lonely?"
Eddie expects a denial, for Steve to laugh it off and tell Eddie that he's perfectly fine and fulfilled. Or maybe he expects a shrug, a non-answer. What he doesn't expect is the gut-wrenching sob that seems to tear past the other boys lips.
He doesn't expect to turn and see Steve Harrington's face, a scant foot from his, shining with tears.
He panics a little at the sight.
"Fuck- I'm so sorry-"
"Don't be." Steve tries to wipe his eyes, to hide the tremble in his voice. "Not your fault there's something wrong with me."
"What do you mean?"
"It's like I'm broken man, like nobody can stand to be around me. Tommy and Carol hate me now, Nancy- hell even my own parents hate being at home with me for more than a week. It's like I'm repellent or something. Couldn't even get a date to stick around for a whole night."
And Eddie's pretty sure *he* might start crying now. He'd never have expected this much from Steve, all that sadness to come pouring out. It wouldn't have happened if Steve was completely sober. Without thinking, he reaches out.
Eddie puts a hand on Steve's shoulder and waits to see if the touch gets rejected, but Steve seems to lean into him, so he lets his hand linger.
"This probably won't help, but I don't think you're repellent. And that's coming from somebody who your whole group used to torture. I don't know much about you, but I kind of liked having you around tonight."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
Steve gives him a tiny smile. His eyes are still wet with tears, and the smile doesn't come close to reaching them. He seems impossibly small here in Eddie's bed.
"I don't know man. I just wish-"
He cuts himself off, apparently deciding his words are too far, but Eddie urges him to keep talking.
"What do you wish Steve?"
"I just wish that... there was somebody out there I could have a future with. Somebody who actually loved me, you know?"
It might be the saddest thing Eddie's ever heard, and he blames that fact for what he does next.
He takes his hand off Steve's shoulders and instead hauls Steve closer to him, fitting the other boy against his chest and wrapping his arms around him. It's a move that might get him decked, but he doesn't think it will. And he'll be damned if he doesn't hug Steve right that second.
He doesn't get hit. Steve tenses for a second, but it's just that one instant before he's melting into the embrace.
Eddie feels more tears falling against his shirt, and he couldn't care less. He keeps Steve close, let's him cry into his chest, runs a hand through that famous mop of hair.
He isn't sure how long it takes for Steve to calm down, but eventually he does. His breathing evens out, and he shivers a little before speaking.
"Thanks man."
And Eddie takes another leap of faith.
"I could be that person, you know."
"What?"
"I mean. You know Im... not straight. It may not be exactly what you're wanting but. I think I could picture a future with you. If you want to, just for tonight...I could be that someone who loves you."
Steve looks at Eddie, like he's a puzzle that he needs to solve, before a other shiver seems to wrack his body.
"Just for tonight?"
It comes out as a whisper, but Eddie hears it all the same.
"Yeah. For tonight Steve."
"I think...I think I'd like that."
Eddie gives him the sweetest smile he can muster, and nods.
"Alright sweetheart."
Eddie isn't exactly sure what it means, to love Steve for the night. After all, Steve is straight. He figures it doesn't matter much though, it's only for a night.
He keeps a hold on Steve, let's him get comfortable tucked against Eddie, and he does what feels natural. He runs a hand up and down Steve's spine, traces shapes into the soft fabric of his shirt. He tangles their legs together, and in a moment of insane bravery he presses a kiss to the top of Steve's head.
He's met with a sigh, full of relief, and figures he's on the right track.
"Just close your eyes Stevie, I've got you."
"Can you tell me about it?"
"Hmmm?"
"The future. You said you could see one. Can you tell me?"
And he asks so carefully, he sounds almost afraid, Eddie can't say no to that.
"Do you want the fantasy future, or the realistic future?"
"The real one."
"Alright then. Well, if I'm not going to be a rich and famous rockstar...I'll probably graduate and get a job somewhere in town. A real job, maybe working on cars or something. I'm good with cars. You'd come over all the time, have dinners with me and with Wayne. You'd have to meet Wayne. And we'd have more nights like this, sleeping close."
Steve let's out a pleased sounding hum, and shifts his face so it's buried even closer in Eddie's neck. He can feel Steve's breath on him.
"We could save up money and get a little place together, somewhere outside Hawkins. I have to stay kind of close, for my uncle, but maybe Indy?"
Steve nods, mutters something about staying close 'just in case'. He sounds like he might fall asleep, so Eddie keeps going.
"We could get an apartment, nothing too fancy. We would get two rooms, so nobody gets suspicious, but we would share a bed most nights. I'd play with my band on weekends, just for fun, and you'd join some little local sports team. I'd make sure to schedule DND nights so that I never miss a single game, even though I don't understand a damn thing about sports. We would come home for holidays, but most of the time it would just be us. I'd take good care of you, make sure you never go more than a few hours without me telling you I love you. I'll show up wherever you're working just to give you a hug and a kiss, and make sure you don't forget it. And I'll annoy the hell out of, but you won't mind too much, because I'll make you happy too."
Eddie can think of more. He can think about so many things. How he could give Steve one of his rings, even if they couldn't legally get married, even if Steve would never want that. Just as another reminder that he's loved. They could take trips together and go out to parties where Steve will never have to worry about getting ditched. Eddie doesn't do things halfway, and he has a hell of an imagination. He could picture them growing old together, if he tried, if he let himself. But this is just for tonight, so he doesn't. Instead he runs a hand through Steve's hair again, and listens to his quiet breathing. He thinks he may have fallen asleep, but he's wrong.
"That sounds nice."
It comes out muffled, spoken into Eddie's neck, but he manages to make it out, and he let's the vibration of it sink into his skin.
*It's only for tonight.*
He has to remind himself, because Steve is just feeling lonely. He doesn't want that future with Eddie, he just wants to feel loved.
But even if it's just pretend, just to help Steve for a few hours, he's okay with that.
Steve may think he's broken, but Eddie thinks he would be easy to love for a long time. Loving him for one night is nothing. He doesn't even have to try.
Tomorrow Steve will wake up sober, and he'll thank Eddie for letting him stay over, and they won't talk about it. Eddie will drive Steve back to his car in silence, and they'll say their goodbyes. They may not talk ever again, they never had before.
But for tonight? Eddie Munson will love Steve Harrington, and Steve? He'll let himself be loved, let himself beleive it. And he'll love Eddie right back.
Just for one night.
And if Steve ever needs it again? Eddie will love him for another night. And Steve will give that love right back. He's got plenty to spare, after all. And there's far worse people he could share it with.

Indie horror filmmaker Eddie Munson, high off his first big (underground but notable) success, knows the movers and shakers of the film world have their eyes on him.
They're just waiting to see if he was a one hit wonder before they open all the doors he's been trying to kick down.
His next upcoming film is his chance, his shot at finally making it. Of being like Rob Zombie and the other creators he looks up to that masterfully blended metal and horror.
This is his golden ticket.
The project starts off smooth. His last success has greased the wheels, and things fall into place faster than ever before.
He's got the best idea for this insane haunted house story, a true "mazes in mazes" type of deal with a queer twist. A real look at how a place can haunt a person just as easily as a ghost can.
Everything's going swimmingly--until one of his leads drops out the day they're due to start shooting.
No call no show's, and later, Eddie will find out the guy got a last second call back to be a contestant on one of those Love Island bullshit romance gigs (and laugh his ass off when the main love interest takes one look at Billy Hargrove and goes on a five minute rant about ugly mullets on national television) but right now?
He's fucked.
He's called in every favor he has for this film. Maxed out every credit card he owns, tapped every contact, got on his hands and knees and begged his rising star journalist best bud to help him market it. (Which Nancy agreed too, for way less cash than she should have.)
Eddie can't get anyone on the phone, much less find a replacement actor and the amazing place they rented, that is so dark and wonderfully eerie, is booked out the rest of the year as an AirBnB.
If he doesn't film now, he loses it all.
Cue the other lead, unknown theater actor Steve Harrington, watching his hair pulling, tire kicking, 'cursing and hopping while holding a toe' mental breakdown and asks why Eddie himself doesn't act in it.
"Just go full Kevin Smith man. Act and direct." He says, with an easy grin.
Jeff, Eddie's tried and true videographer, trades glances with Gareth and Grant (Eddie's long used special effects and makeup team, who double for about twelve other jobs because they're also his best friends and they're all in this together, make or break.)
"We don't really have a lot of other options." Gareth hedges. "You're already using me and Grant as background characters."
Eddie, hands fluttering around his face as though trying to wave away this entire situation, squeezes his eyes shut and lets out a pained hiss.
"Fine, fine!" He announces with the air of a man running towards a fire. "Fuck it, this is our one shot and so help me I will be shooting it!"
Steve politely hides a laugh with a cough.
"Chuckle all you want big boy, I'm going to tragically romance you so hard people will forget both of our characters actually live." Eddie snarls.
Steve, the handsome bastard, just winks.  "Looking forward to it."
Eddie blushes, but hides it with a surge of frantic energy, conveyed by lots of yelling and moving and getting the ball rolling.
Two days later, Steve would give the performance of a lifetime down on his knees, covered in a literal pound of fake gore, booty shorts and nothing else as he sobbed about how a lover could become a home. His hands clawed at Eddie's jeans before resting a tear stained face on a slim leg as he bent his body towards Eddie like it hurt to be away from him.
Eddie would later receive equal praise in his own acting during the scene, with the world and every reporter in it asking how he conveyed an otherworldly panic so beautifully throughout Steve's performance. What was he thinking, to evoke those expressions on his face?
The way his own pale hand, unmarred by blood and acting as a metaphor for the plot, would come to stroke Steve's cheeks.
Eventually he'd come up with a smooth polished answer that cheekily pleased his audience, but nothing would ever come close to the truth.
("Eddie I've known you since grade school." Jeff said that night, a scant few hours after they'd wrapped. "You can act man, but not like that."
Eddie made a wild "shut up" gesture, looking frantically over his shoulder before admitting; "You saw how close his face was to the prince of darkness!? I was seconds away from popping a boner next to his lips, in front of the 4K camera!”
Eddie bounced into Jeff’s face so he could hiss: “He fucking had his chin on my thigh, Jeff, and I am only a man. A mere mortal!"
"So we're gonna unpack all of that later." Jeff said finally, when he'd managed to get his mouth working and Eddie back out of his personal space. "But dude, we've talked about you calling your dick the prince of darkness."
Eddie flipped him off.)
One year later and critics named Corroded the best horror film of the year, praising the camera work, practical effects, and how there wasn't a soul alive who was surprised to hear Eddie and Steve were dating after their explosive on screen chemistry.
No one ever quite understood the prince of darkness jokes or why Steve mentioning it made Eddie blush, but that was a secret to find out later.
Today on WIP’s I have no intention of writing, indie horror movie AU!

inspired by and as a direct follow up to this post by @strangersteddierthings:
Eddie is horrified. He remembers the day Steve is referring to, though clearly not as well as Steve does. He calls out as Steve raced up the stairs and hears his door slam.
“Fuck.” He stares blankly at the wall in front of him. He can’t believe things went so bad so quickly. He’s been trying to get to know Steve better, get closer and damn if he didn’t just blow the hole thing. He’d shown up early, told Steve he needed to prepare as an excuse to spend some time with him. Despite everything that happened over spring break, Steve had remained guarded, standoffish no matter what Eddie tried. At least now he knew why. He’d fucked things up before he’d known there was something to fuck up.
He feels even worse about calling him a bully. Sure, Steve had looked the other way and even laughed at some of the mean jokes others had made, but he was far from the worst. That dubious award went to Billy Hargrove, but even without him, there was plenty of people who did far worse than Steve did. Especially because Steve is right. He did hit first, metaphorically at least. He can justify it all he wants as trying to protect himself, but that doesn’t make it right. Steve all but admitted that as he said the same thing. He feels nauseous at the realization that maybe he was just as bad as those he decried. That for all his talk about accepting outcasts and defying convention, he was just as prejudiced. Swallowing hard, he heads back to the dining room and looks at the clock. There is no way he is going to be able to run the campaign today. He’s not going to be able to focus or even play without thinking about how things might have been if he hadn’t driven Steve off all those years ago. He grabs the phone and dials Gareth’s number. “Emerson house, Sheryl speaking.” “Hi Mrs. Emerson, it’s Eddie.” Eddie is proud that he manages to keep his voice even. “Is Gareth there?” “Oh, yes! Let me go get him for you.” “Thanks Mrs. Emerson.” Eddie focuses on breathing while he waits. “Eddie? Hey man, what’s up?” Eddie breathes out. “Hey Gareth. Look, I know its last minute, but we’re gonna have to postpone Hellfire. Something came up.” He could hear Gareth’s frown through the phone. “Postpone? What happened, did Harrington do something?” As if he couldn’t feel worse. “Nah. I’ll explain later, but can you call Jeff and Frank, let them know? I gotta call the freshman, too.” “Alright, but I’m going to hold you to that.” “Fair enough. Talk to you tomorrow.” Eddie promises before hanging up. He weighs his options for how to tell the Party. Eventually, he decides on calling Mike, know that the younger teen won’t push too much. He’s dialing the Wheeler home before he can second guess his decision. “This is Mike.” Eddie feels a rush of gratitude that Mike is the one who answered, rather than Nancy or one of their parents. “Hey Mike, it’s Eddie. Listen, Steve’s not feeling great and having Hellfire here isn’t going to help. Can you call the rest of the Party, let them know we’re gonna move it to another day? I’ll keep an eye on Steve.” Eddie knows Mike is a confused, given how adamant he’s been in the past about not canceling or moving Hellfire, but as he expected, Mike accepts what he says at face value. “Sure. Need us to bring anything?” “Nah, I’ve got it. Pretty sure he just needs some peace and quiet so he can rest. But thanks.” They say their goodbyes and Eddie puts the phone back on the hook.  With that done, he checks that the door is locked and faces the stairs. Now for the hard part. He’s not sure what he’s going to say, if there is anything he can say that will fix this, but he has to try. Even if doesn’t change things between him and Steve, Steve deserves at least that much. Every step feels like it takes effort, chest heavy with guilt, but it only takes him a few moments to get to Steve’s door. It’s closed, which doesn’t surprise him. He takes a moment to gather his thoughts before knocking. Nothing. “Steve?” If it wasn’t for the quiet sound of Steve’s breathing he could hear through the door, Eddie would think he had left. He glad that he at least didn’t drive Steve out of his own home. He rests his forehead on the door. “I’m sorry.” Eddie hopes Steve can hear how much he means it. “You’re right, I fucked up. I made an assumption and took out my anger at other people on you. And that wasn’t fair and it’s not okay. But I want you to know that I’m sorry. Even if it wasn’t you, I shouldn’t have done that.” He lets out a hysterical laugh as he realizes - “And despite that, you still humor the kids when they talk about D&D and agreed to let us play here and didn’t punch me in the face, which makes you a better man than I.” He falls silent, listens as Steve’s breathing slows. He isn’t sure how long he stands there. He wonders how many other people he hurt this way, without even realizing. Knows he wants to do better, be better. He sighs, feeling his shoulders slump. “Anyway, I canceled Hellfire for today. I told everyone something came up, don’t worry about that. I’ll make up some story, make sure they know its not your fault. And uh,  let me know if you want to hang out again or something. I know I’ve been around a lot; didn’t realize that I was making you so uncomfortable, which is probably another thing I should apologize for. Anyway. Yeah. I’ll see you around, okay?” He waits a moment for an answer, but when none comes, he backs away from the door and walks downstairs to gather his stuff. It hurts, but he knows Steve deserves space and to be the one to initiate contact. He has some thinking to do, anyway.
