thinking about how steve was homophobic and misogynistic in s1 but they gave him a chance to be faced with a demogorgon when people needed help and he stepped up. everyone lauds him for that, and he's become a fan favourite. yet when billy, finally in his right mind after being possessed the whole season, gets the opportunity and chooses to do the same--stepping up to take a killing blow for el--people dont offer him the same grace? why. :(

the biggest (reasonable) argument is always 'billy dying was not a redemption' and it's not, you're right. steve stepping in to whack a demogorgon with jonathan's nail bat wasnt a redemption either; his redemption came with him apologizing to them both, and then working to show nancy that he's a better person as they deal with the fallout of s1, and being gracious about jonathan's presence in nancy's life. he got the chance to show he's changed and managed to redeem himself because he lived, and billy unfortunately didnt. but you cant deny that his final moments proved that the potential for him to change is there, and that makes a difference.

While I 100% agree that if people aren't having fun they should take a step back/quit, I don't like the "if you're not having fun just go find another game" argument because it's so often used to shut down actual legitimate criticism from people who are otherwise enjoying the game but want genuine problems to be addressed. (I've seen it, for example, when people try to bring up bigotry in games and suggest maybe making some changes to remove it. I always get wary when I see people say it now.)

Oh yeah absolutely. There's real criticism that we have to be able to point out and discuss. A lot of the times people use this for any minor criticism someone has and I agree, that's often a way to shut down the conversation. Criticism in general is supposed to come from a place of love: you love something and you want to see it be better.

Unfortunately, in this case, when the community turns into ONLY negativity and criticism, it's kinda hard to believe they care about the game anymore. If people still had some positive stuff to engage with and were enjoying the game but had issues, then sure. But most of the negativity online right now is just purely rage bait. Bungie apparently has no redeeming qualities, and Destiny is dead. Misinformation is spreading about everything: all devs abandoned Destiny to work on Marathon (claim with no source that's accepted as fact and makes no sense: Destiny is the only game making them money, they can't abandon it before Marathon is out. Like, logically), monetisation is the worst in the industry (I genuinely don't believe that they play other games if they think that Destiny's monetisation is the worst in the industry), Bungie is maliciously banning people for fun (????) but also Bungie isn't banning people enough, Bungie is maliciously making server issues and didn't develop a "fix server" button in their office, game development is easy and Bungie is just lazy and the devs don't want to tell us anything because they're evil, Destiny is falling apart and nobody is playing anymore (just trust me bro), and most recent one which is possibly the most baffling of all - Bungie Foundation is a scam to write off taxes. Yes, that is currently discourse (which apparently gets recycled every year). Bungie Foundation, a charity organisation that's been going on for 13 years and is an independent registered organisation, is a scam. This is where we're at with the community mentality. And there's even more.

When we're at this point, it's truly something else. Like, if they believe conspiracy theories about Bungie and think Bungie is scamming them, maybe they just shouldn't play the game anymore. Why are they still here if they think this is all a scam? I would drop the game if I believed any of this so strongly.

Normal people having criticism and all is perfectly fine however! I did my fair share especially recently about the season pass pricing changes which I called a predatory practice and still believe it is. There's a lot more stuff to complain about while still enjoying the game and not basing your entire online existence and personality on hating Bungie. If they've got nothing else to do besides sitting on twitter shitting on Bungie, maybe it's time to move on.

I've also had my suspicions about the motives for hardcore Bungie hate after the incidents involving transphobic attacks on Bungie devs following the LF showcase, as well as all the crap about Nimbus and their VA. Given the recent developments about the general anti-LGBT+ mentality, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a contingent of people who are focusing on Bungie more than anyone else for how outspoken they are in their support for LGBT+ causes. Like, not to do some big reach or something but it's fairly curious that gamers online are adopting the anti-LGBT+ sentiments while Bungie is aggressively supportive. It just rubs me the wrong way that the one company that's committed to this and has been for years before most other companies jumped on the bandwagon is the one that they're choosing to paint as the worst villain. And the LGBT+ support isn't even all, as Bungie has other initiatives where they actively support women's right, reproductive rights, poc rights, disability rights and so on). I don't know, I've been a part of the gaming community for a long time and while there's been massive changes since the early days (and since gamergate days), the issues of bigotry in gaming remain. It feels particularly suspicious to, out of ALL companies, single out Bungie which invests in charities and progressive causes. Like, in the grand scheme of things, every corpo is robbing me blind, I know that, I have to give money to corpos to live on this Earth, so I at least want to give it to a corpo that considers me to be a human being and funds causes that promote my rights, instead of wanting me dead.

Ironically, all of this weird hate makes it harder to have actual normal criticism. It just gets drowned and lost in the sea of exaggerated bullshit and lies and conspiracies perpetuated by people who just don't seem to like the game anymore. At the end of the day, it's a video game. Whatever criticism we have, if it gets to the point where we just can't handle the state of the game, the best way to show it is to simply stop playing. A deluge of harassment on twitter will not bring about meaningful change nor will it adequately convey our criticism to anyone. If they truly want some changes, they would do this criticism in a way that matters, instead of creating a horde of angry gamers who will latch onto every lie and create a hate bandwagon.

the way i wish there could be more good faith analysis and fic about billy having adopted racial prejudice from his dad and then learning to properly recognize it and grow past it in order become a better person. i wish there was more posts and fics that tackle the bullshit lucas has had to deal with as a black kid in small town indiana because the duffers never even considered it. but the sheer puritan black and white thinking and performative activism or moral virtue signaling or whatever the fuck that is so pervasive in this fandom means that even the few posts and fics that dare to try and actually tackle racism tend turn it into either a punishment narrative, are depressingly shallow about it, make it about hating and liking the 'right characters', or miss the mark entirely

like i get it, homophobia/transphobia is easier to explore and talk about for most fans. it's complex and multi-layered just like other types of oppression, but so much of fandom is queer and dedicated to shipping and labels that yeah, i can see how talking about it is just. easier for a lot of ppl. also a lot of fandom is white. and lots of white gays get weird about discussing racism in their spaces. y'know the deal, but i digress. from what i can see, very few ppl want to explore how racism affects our favorite characters and the stories they live in. i know some ppl are probably afraid of getting it wrong, or they don't know anything about it and don't feel like they should. it's like, my blorbo is queer and so am i, so why wouldn't i talk all day about that? i get it. but it honestly just means a lot when someone tries earnestly. i have read beautiful fics about trans love through hardship by cis authors and such genuine fics about connection in the face of racism's poison by white authors.

there is just SO much untapped potential in exploring lucas and max and billy and patrick and argyle and all the other characters directly and indirectly affected by bigotry and racism within the narrative that never got the acknowledgement it deserved. plus it's super weird being used as a 'gotcha!' by white fans that hate billy (as if poc fans of billy aren't capable of seeing it for the bullshit it is) or seeing lucas' treatment in the show get brushed aside like it's nothing or how argyle gets sidelined an awful lot in the fandom (and don't even get me started on how messy the classism in this fandom can be, the borderline erasure of eddie's poverty and its effects on who he is as a person in fic is insane sometimes)

anyway. idk if any of this makes sense, but i can count like maybe 3 good fics and maybe a dozen good posts about billy that actually address this in good faith and only maybe a dozen more for every other character i mentioned. and i desperately want more. i am brown and queer and i want healing and love for all of these characters and i am going to have to start churning out more of it myself at this rate.

So, Target has decided to fire employees who purchase a Stanley cup. Yeah the same Stanley cups that have lead in them. Target's reasoning is that they violated a policy which doesn't allow employees to gain an "unfair advantage" over customers when it comes to purchasing limited items. Managers' reasoning for allowing employees to buy the cup is that it's a cup and why on Earth should people not be allowed to buy them. My opinion is scalping is bad and a problem that needs to be better addressed by companies. The solution is not to fire employees for buying limited items, even if they put one to the side for themselves to purchase after work. I think a much better solution is one we already use, which is the good old fashioned purchase limit paired with not making only like 1 of something per every hundred of people wanting it. You want to buy a few? Sure, maybe you're buying the others for friends or family or something who also like the thing. You want to buy 10? 50? The entire stock on display and all in the back? Absolutely not, sir madam or other.

Also if you're a Target employee who got fired, definitely make sure to file for unemployment and have the state investigate for unlawful termination. It might not be considered as such because it was a stupid policy but still a policy, but might as well find out and have them go after Target if it is. (And no, "at-will" does not mean that an employer can fire you for absolutely any reason. They just want you to think that so you don't bother to track conversations in written (text/e-mail/etc) form and have state labor departments investigate when you get fired and are applying for unemployment.)

Girl help I keep thinking about freaking persona 4

The craziest shit about all of these situations is that they were 100% preventable. All these dumbass people had to do was simply not do what they did. It was so simple.

If you don’t want to play with a premade Sim that is obviously religious, don’t play with that sim. Leave them alone.

If you’re comfortable with supporting bigots, maybe don’t make a post defending your right to support a bigot. Maybe don’t double down on it and then try to compare willfully supporting a bigot that you do not have to support to a poor person buying fast fashion. Maybe shut the fuck up.

Jaune and Blake's roles are useless. Bumblebee is useless as a ship. Bumblebee is an abusive ship. Blake has privileges. She is WHITE. Fandom can make her a dark-skinned girl out of her all it wants. She will always remain a white girl with rich parents. Blake has a big house. She has never gone hungry. She had access to a comfortable island life without the grimm. Whereas Yang and Ruby grew up in a place full of grimm and even suffered from them. Blake is almost like Weiss, but she's worse. Blake has prejudices against people in 1v and is unapologetic about them. But Blake poor meow meow everyone owes her an apology for racism and her suffering. Her suffering that didn't happen. Blake has protective and kind parents. Her parents were not depressed or alcoholics. Her parents did not die or go missing. Blake has the perfect family. Blake has a perfect partner (I don't think Adam sent her on dangerous missions) Blake is a good white princess who decided to play activist and ran away when she realized it wasn't a game. I suspect that Jaune also has the perfect family. There is not a hint that he was bullied in his family. He has no hints that he was forbidden to practice. It doesn't make sense for Jaune to run away from home to play the hero. Weiss had to work her way through sweat and literally blood. Jaune just forged documents. If he wanted to be a hero so badly, he should have started training at home. Or he should have gone to Signal (like Ruby) . If he's a descendant of heroes, he should have been trained since he was a kid. But he doesn't do anything. Jaune is like Blake. He just decided to play hero. He doesn't want to make people's lives better (like Ruby). He doesn't want to overthrow his father (Weiss). He doesn't even want to run away from his past and start a new life (Blake). He doesn't want to make a profit (Yang). He just wants to play the hero. He wants to be famous. He's useless.

It is incredibly unfortunate that Crwby decided Blake's backstory was going to be island princess instead of orphan activist, but I don't think it's fair to say her life is perfect because she didn't suffer discrimination directly - which is a take that is entirely up to interpretation depending on how you converge her V1 speech ("You could say I was born into the White Fang [shown with ratty clothes as a youth at a protest]) with her V4 lifestyle (daughter to the head honchos, big fancy mansion on an island with ((supposedly)) very little space, etc). Even if you're at the top of second class... you're still second class. The best a Faunus can ever hope for is silver while the humans get gold from the get-go

Blake Belladonna is a tool of a narrative, written by people who shouldn't go near racial issues with a 100 ft pole. It's not her fault that she is a white girl that somehow has Indian parents, nor is it her fault that her storyline is absolute ass at best. It is Crwby's fault that her pacifism methods/activist history/de-radicalization arc amount to... nothing

A person doesn't need to be personally affected by discrimination to take action against it. The suffering of one is the suffering of all. If everyone only did things according to how it affected them personally, the world would be an incredibly dark place indeed. (Just look at the discourse surrounding the Dragon Age 2 companions. Ugh)

As to Blake's personal suffering... it's really hard to say anything concrete. The narrative of RWBY doesn't give us anything solid, and what little it does give us gets contradicted (see aforementioned V1 speech vs V4 presentation). The only thing we can say for certain is that she suffered at the hands of Adam as a romantic partner, which is Crwby's way of side-stepping the racism thing they created. So, technically, she has suffered as a woman in narrative, not as a Faunus nor a Faunus woman (a la misogynoir)

While there might might be some precedence of emasculation while growing up with an abundance of sisters while being the only boy, but other than that, there is little to suggest what Jaune's family life was like. We don't know the reason he had to forge his transcripts - was it because he failed his classes at a prior school? Did his family forbid him from continuing the legacy for some reason? Did Jaune do it for the funsies? - and therefore it is impossible to determine why he took the path he did, and if there were any alternatives he failed to pursue

Jaune, like Blake, is a poorly wielded tool of the narrative. The writers wanted him to be both Super Special (long standing legacy, cool heirloom weapon, harem protagonist) and the Audience Stand-in (doesn't know shit about Aura or Grimm or... life in general), which makes him an absolute Frankenstein of tropes. Once again, it is not the fault of a character that they're written to be absolute ass
