How are the gang’s relationship with their parents(and extended family)
OH BOI this took a lot especially because I had to think and RETHINK relationships and stuff, but here we go!
Abby's Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Abby lives with her parents since she's still studying (and a minor too). They're still in a good relationship, as close as ever, and with new people around the house! Her older brother Jacob and his son Simon are living at her home since Jacob got a new job at Mr. Boss' company (his other kid and wife are living at their house in the next city, but they see each other in the weekends and often visit them at Abby's home!). Only problem is with Cree: since she got married in secret, she's seen less and less at the house, also because she moved with her new husband. Her and Abby don't talk anymore after a huge fight they had some years before. Jacob too doesn't talk to her too much, for some reason.
Also, they all love Hoagie, he's always welcome in the house! Sometimes they force Abby to invite him over...
-
Wally's Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wally too still lived with his parents and Joy at their house, but things are not too good. Wally doesn't have a good relationship with his mother anymore, they mostly scream at each other and argue a lot. His father keeps out of their arguments, doesn't even try to mitigate them anymore at this point; if they start, he just takes Joey to the living room to watch TV or something. Sydney has a better relationship with him, even if Wally never wants to talk about his problems with him. Teenagers...
At least things calm down when Kuki's over; they all love the girl!
He's incredibly close to Joey. The two spend a lot of time together, Wally allows him in his room whenever he wants, plays with him sometimes and also lets him sleep in his bed!
Also, since Lou and Syd reconnected, sometimes he hangs around the house too, if they need a babysitter for Joey. Wally... tolerates him. He's good at videogames, at least.
-
Kuki's Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kuki too lives with his family: her parents and Mushi. Her parents are still strict and serious, maybe a bit demanding now that she's in high school, but she handles it pretty good most of the times. But things are not good. Her parents barely talk to each other without arguing, and it is starting to take a tool on her. Also, they don't like Wally at all, considering him a "no good imbecile punk".
She isn't allowed to have him at home, Kani also doesn't want him to get NEAR the house, so sometimes Kuki has to get out without them knowing. But they ALWAYS get to know what she does, and it's because Mushi always tells on her.
The little girl somehow managed to get out of her lifelong grounding, and is now her dad's favorite girl. She's like one of those Delightfuls: a spoiled educated kid who always does what adults say.
-
Hoagie's Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hoagie still lives with his mom, his grandmother (when she wants to hang around) and his brother Tommy. Everything's fine on this side, luckly! His mom still works at Mr. Boss' company, but managed to become Head of Marketing, so she has a lot to do and not too much time to spend home. Hoagie makes sure everything is always ready and clean, cooks for everyone (and he's even GOOD at it!), takes care of laundry and makes sure Tommy showers AT LEAST once at week. He's the man of the house! Especially since no one knows or cares where his father is, at this point.
Abby's always welcome to their house, but Betty always asks to invite her when she's home too, so they can talk! She loves the girl!
His grandma usually hisses at her. Tommy too.
AND FINALLY I CAN ADD Nigel's Family
Tumblr media
After getting his house back when he turned 18, Nigel lived alone in a house that slowly started looking like a messy prison: dirty dishes, clothes everywhere, dust and cracks. The only rooms that were intact were his parent's bedroom (which he started to sleep in) and his old bedroom, that he never entered since he went back. Penny arrived at the right time, as he needed something to get himself together and remember why he was still there and fighting in the TND: for the sake of kids all around the world. The same kids his parents protected as long as they could. Penny claimed the bedroom and is thinking of adding mermaid touches EVERYWHERE. The house still needs cleaning tho.

Gilligan household is WILD
Tumblr media
Trans boy Tommy, nonbinary MLM Hoagie, lesbian Betty. Fuck Lydia idc about her.
To elaborate more on lesbian Betty idk I just think she discovered she was gay after her husband died and so now she just randomly brings home other widowed middle aged ladies to make out with or something. Or make a cake for them

Do you think Anna Gunn is a good actress? I always loved her one liners in breaking bad. Also, do you think there are any similarities between Betty Draper, skyler white and Carmela soprano?
I think that she held her own in Breaking Bad but that there were far better performances.
In terms of similarities ... not particularly. I mean there are broad similarities in that I think they're all lonely, unhappy, and they're all married to morally corrupt (or at least ambiguous) men, they've all had affairs in one way or the other, and like, with Betty and Carmela, broad similarities in the way Don and Tony react to them wanting to get jobs but they're all very different characters.
Carmela is a hypocrite, she waxes poetic about being a good Catholic while reaping the benefits of Tony's criminal activity and when she sees a therapist, her qualms about Tony's lifestyle are only about his affairs while the therapist lays out for her that he's a criminal and she's complicit and she remains complicit and damns her children to the same fate by not leaving him and she simply rejects that truth.
Betty's whole thing is that she was raised to believe her beauty was her only skill/power/asset, which had worked for her in the past but in the changing era/times/decades of Mad Men where other women and the other female characters are evolving and growing, she's basically a remnant of the past/stuck in the past. Her growth is stunted, which is why she also acts incredibly childish and petty.
Skyler, at the beginning anyway, is a voice of reason:
in the early days she was the voice of morality on the show. She was the one telling him, “You can’t cook crystal meth.” She’s got a tough job being married to this asshole
I also don't think she's as fully-formed as especially Carmela but also Betty (who also isn't as fully-formed as Carmela imo but more fully-formed than Skyler), which I think is partly on purpose:
[Vince Gilligan] would really caution me, because, personally, I’m a big crier and I’m  emotional, so he really had to remind me a lot, “She’s not that, she’s  not as in touch with her emotions and she’s not able to necessarily  access that.” She’s got more steel inside of her, quite frankly. And  having Skyler be that way was really smart because if you had been  watching, like in Season 2, and thinking, “Oh my god this poor woman. I  can’t believe he’s doing this stuff to her and to this family,” then how  would the show be able to carry on? Because if you lose your sympathy  for Walt that early what are you going to do with the show? Much too  early you would have been thinking, “This guy’s horrible, look what he’s  doing to this poor woman.”
but she's the antithesis to Carmela, even when she starts helping Walt, she's eventually like, when is this enough, though, like when will you be satisfied, when is this over, when can you walk away, Carmela was all about what she felt was owed to her and with Betty, when she discovers that Don is Dick after dealing with his multiple infidelities and therefore finding out that he's just an all-around cheat, she tells no one about that but she divorces him whereas Skyler eventually ends up being an active participant in Walt's criminal activity, even betraying Marie and Hank until she realizes that she had a version of what was going on with Walt in her head that was simply untrue. So rather than similarities, I think I would say they're all different shades/approaches to morally complicated situations with spouses.

2024
happy new year!
you can find the post i'll be referencing continually here: https://www.tumblr.com/hope-of-virgo/706484244807024640/im-currently-bedridden-as-a-result-of-hormonal?source=share
so it's a little under a year since I wrote the original, and things have surely made a change.
my (now) wife and i got married less than a month ago, in the eyes of the australian government i'm a girl, and i seem to have stumbled backwards into a management(ish) role at work.
so... about those resolutions.
stop: doomscrolling i had an amount of success on this, partially due to twitter shitting its pants and reddit having the Great Blackout and subsequent degradation of content. a lot of algorithmically sorted internet shit has done this recently, and a lot of it comes down to "we are approaching a fiscal cliff". what i have picked up from this though is that i'm enjoying learning new skills, such as fermenting and learning sql. i don't carry around a handbag project as much anymore due to some joint issues i've been having making me switch to a backpack, and doing an rsi at work.
stop: masking my autism this has definitely gotten better with my hrt progressing; i'm less afraid to be my authentic self. the hard part has been the pronoun switch and managing the mood problems that happen as a result. for those not in the know, i switched from he/they to she/they after someone at the pole studio called me "she" and i was like "huh...didn't hate that". i also generally held the view that if people weren't calling me that without being told, it would feel inauthentic to ask them.
stop: making excuses not to go to the pole studio this hasn't stopped, but it's as much to do with other factors as it is me butting heads with a number of studio members. actually getting there is difficult without driving, and due to my town growing really fast as a result of melbourne being really fucking expensive to live in, there's been a large cop presence flood in too. i'm a medicinal cannabis user for chronic pain, any amount of thc in my system meets the evidentiary burden for drug driving, and good luck getting a social work job with that on my record. i'm moving to an electric scooter this year, which should solve a lot of these issues.
keep: cooking my own meals now that my wife and i are living together, i'd already be cooking for her, so it's an easy routine to keep food in the house for the both of us. it's also getting easier to find reasons to cook my own meals since i now no longer live within walking distance of 3 different pizza shops, the cost of food has basically doubled in the last year, and my wife is getting into the "growing your own food" side of urban homesteading, which gives me lots of options to cook with seasonal produce.
keep: doing gender affirmation my op shopping buddy bounced in and out of rehab a lot this year and we actually haven't seen each other at all as a result. she reached out to me proactively at christmas as well, which is a first, so i have high hopes for that. my hair's getting longer and changing texture, and i'm fitting the form of "women's clothing" a lot better now. i'm still shit at makeup but i always feel better about myself when i do it so while fucking it up feels bad (god knows when i turned up to work having fucked up my eye shadow in like september i looked like i'd been kicked in the face), getting it right feels amazing.
keep: watching new shows and listening to new music i actually went pretty well at this i think. i had the aim of getting to 2000 songs in my spotify library, which is a 25% increase, and i think i ended the calendar year with 1990. i went to a lot more live music this year, i saw betty who, cry club, eilish gilligan, florence and the machine, aleksiah, bella amor, teenage joans, merci mercy, and waterparks. i also went to see lights' headline show in melbourne, which is a top 5 experiences of my life moment. she's been my most listened to artist for the last 10 years. when she was performing "when the summer dies" she got down into the crowd, and there was this moment where she looked at me, then ran her hand through my hair. this sounds like fanfic but i swear on my life that it happened.
start: eating more vegetables i'm doing better at this; i'm a sensory seeker when it comes to food, and vegetables are pretty boring. i also don't really like sweet food (and neither do my teeth, but that's a different story), so getting my fruit intake can be hard. i've solved the problem to an extent with pickles and ferments, and mixing fruit into yogurt as well.
start: actively reducing household waste my state has introduced bottle and can deposit refunds. we don't buy a lot of bottled and canned drinks, but it's nice to have the added incentive. we bought a compost bin with our wedding money, and i'm loving being able to find something to do with the veggie scraps. i'm looking into vertical farming gourmet mushrooms this year. we've moved to household cleaners where you basically get a "forever bottle" and fill them with refills, which you then send the bag back and they reuse it. the plastics they use as part of this scheme are also recycled from reclaimed ocean plastics, which is kind of cool. my bestie made me some beeswax wraps, and i think i've used single-use plastic wrap like 3 times this year maybe. that's not even counting the plastic savings from not buying bread from the shops anymore.
start: more longform journaling got banned from instagram for it, but that's probably not a net negative. doing longform writing when you're already doing a lot for uni can be a challenge, but i've done a bit. i've also joined the fediverse as part of the reddit exodus, and that's been a bit of fun.
start: diversifying my income sources i'm now an accredited life model, though i've actually been too busy to utilise it. i've basically retired from *~spicy accounting~* as well, because i'm having a bunch of problems even having sex in my private life, let alone doing it at work. the economic issues have also cut out a lot of my clientele, so i'm taking it as a sign from the universe that it's time to go do something else. i also decided to quit my job, which people like @tamaaya68000 and @gotouhitori have been trying to convince me to do since that one awesome time in 2021 where i tried to jump in front of a train because it seemed like a better option than going to work the following monday. fortunately there are positions open in other parts of the hospital that i'm applying for later today, and when i get my diploma i'll likely apply at child protection, who are so desperate for workers that they're promising guaranteed promotion to cpp4 within 2 years and hiring people on working holiday visas from other countries to fill the skilled workers gap.
start: interior decorating currently writing this from in the middle of a bunch of still-packed moving boxes from when i moved in like 3 months ago. it's a work in progress. i'm going to ask a friend of mine to paint me some things as some commissioned art, but beyond that i'm actually not sure what i want to do with the space.
2024's resolutions will probably come next week, but overall i'm pretty happy with the year 2023.

"Some forty light-years away in the constellation of Aquarius, Pallulle revolves around an ultracool blue dwarf star that humans have designated TRAPPIST-1. The Smaragdi, however, call their pale, minimalist sun Lagom, a word that means, in their exceedingly specific language: 'a spouse who habitually withholds affection but comes through with a squeeze when you really need them and always pays the bills on time'. Pallulle itself means: 'the parent who gives and gives, but it is never enough for their ungrateful childen, who will probably never amount to anything, anyway'." --Catherynne Valente, Space Opera (208)

MARILYN MONROE
June 1, 1926 - August 4, 1962
Tumblr media
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson) was an actress, model, and singer. Famous for playing comedic "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s and was emblematic of the era's changing attitudes towards sexuality. She was a top-billed actress for only a decade, but her films grossed $200 million by the time of her death in 1962. More than half a century later, she continues to be a major popular culture icon.
"When I was five I think, that's when I started wanting to be an actress. I didn't like the world around me because it was kind of grim, but I loved to play house. When I heard that this was acting, I said that's what I want to be. Some of my foster families used to send me to the movies to get me out of the house and there I'd sit all day and way into the night. Up in front, there with the screen so big, a little kid all alone, and I loved it.” ~ Marilyn Monroe,1962
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball never worked with Marilyn Monroe, but meet her in 1953 at Ciro’s Nightclub on Sunset Strip, along with Betty Grable, and Red Skelton. Monroe’s immense popularity permeated Ball’s work none-the-less.
At the start of “Changing the Boys’ Wardrobe” (ILL S3;E10) the gang is heading to the movies to see “That picture we’ve been trying to get to for weeks with Marilyn Monroe.” The movie is likely Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which premiered in New York City in July 1953. On November 5, 1953, the same day the episode was filmed, Monroe’s new film How to Marry a Millionaire was released in the US.
Tumblr media
The November 1953 cover of TV and Movie Screen Magazine saw Lucy (in “The Camping Trip”) and Marilyn wearing the dress she wore on the May 1953 cover of Life Magazine promoting Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
Tumblr media
Also on November 5, 1953, the town of Monroe, New York (60 miles from New York City) was temporarily renamed Marilyn Monroe.
Tumblr media
The film later inspired much of the plot of “Second Honeymoon” (S5;E14), Lucy’s failed attempt to make their transatlantic crossing to Europe more than just a working vacation.
Tumblr media
Monroe’s dinner companion turns out to be a seven year-old boy, just like Lucy’s ping pong partner turns out to be young Kenneth Hamilton (Harvey Grant).
Tumblr media
Lucy gets stuck in a porthole just as Monroe did, also draping a blanket around her shoulders so passersby wouldn’t know what was really going on.
Tumblr media
The idea for the burlap potato sack dresses in “Lucy Wants A Paris Gown” (ILL S5;E20) comes from Monroe’s real life.
Tumblr media
In 1951 Marilyn Monroe took a series of high fashion photographs wearing a potato sack as a response to a journalist who said that she might look sexier in a burlap sack than her usual fashion choices.
Tumblr media
Lucy first wore burlap at the end of “Mr. and Mrs. TV Show” (ILL S4;E24) as her scary version of a Phipps make-over.
Tumblr media
In “Ricky’s Movie Offer” (ILL S4;E5) Lucy and Ethel argue about who looks more like Marilyn Monroe.
Tumblr media
While Lucy has the facial features, Ethel has the blonde hair.
Tumblr media
Fred (hilariously) settles the argument!
Tumblr media
In “Ricky’s Screen Test” (ILL S4;E7) a long list of Hollywood names are dropped in anticipation of hobnobbing with celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy and Harpo Marx” (ILL S4;E28) Lucy wonders if Ethel might pass for Monroe to a near-sighted Carolyn Appleby. After Ethel tries to walk like Marilyn Monroe, Lucy decides that “nobody is that near-sighted!” Fred says that he looks more like Marilyn than either of them!
Tumblr media
In “Lucy and Superman” (ILL S6;E13), the Appleby’s come over for a social evening that Ethel calls “the bore war” because the couples only talk about their children. As the scene opens, Caroline is in mid-sentence talking about a Marilyn Monroe film.
Tumblr media
CAROLINE: “...and he picked up Marilyn Monroe, slung her over his shoulder and carried her off!”
Although the title is never mentioned, the film they are discussing is Bus Stop, starring Marilyn Monroe and Don Murray. It was released in August 1956, two and a half months before this episode was filmed.
Tumblr media
When “Lucy Does the Tango” (ILL S6;E20), she stuffs eggs down her blouse and Ethel stashes a some in her back pockets. Lucy tells her, “Whatever you do don’t try to walk like Marilyn Monroe,” but the ‘yolk’ is on Ethel when Fred suddenly enters through the kitchen door!
Tumblr media
In “Lucy the Gun Moll” (TLS S4;E25), Lucy plays Lucy Carmichael and Rusty Martin. The name Rusty Martin was probably derived from Lucy’s hair color and the surname of Mary Martin, who introduced the song “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” (music and lyrics by Cole Porter) in the 1938 Broadway musical Leave It to Me. Marilyn Monroe sang it in the 1960 film Let’s Make Love.  In that same film, Harry Cheshire, who played Sam Johnson in “Oil Wells” (ILL S3;E18), played Monroe’s father. Jerry Hausner (Jerry, Ricky’s Agent) and Joan Banks (Reporter Eleanor Harris in “Fan Magazine Interview”) played uncredited supporting roles.
Tumblr media
Lucy and Marilyn shared a leading man in handsome Keith Andes. Andes was Lucy’s male lead in Wildcat on Broadway, and later played was featured on three episodes of “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
In 1952, he played opposite Marilyn in Clash By Night, an RKO picture.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy Gets Ricky on the Radio” (1952), the June 3, 1952 of Look Magazine actually had Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe on the cover!  Monroe was promoting Clash by Night, and Desi had written a feature on his wife for the magazine. So Marilyn actually did appear on “I Love Lucy” - if only in a still photo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some Like It Hot (1959) is arguably one of Marilyn Monroe’s most popular films. What does it have in common with Lucille Ball? In 1958, both Lucy and Monroe were depicted at San Diego’s famous Del Coronado Hotel. It is the hotel that the Ricardo’s and Mertzes stay at in “Lucy Goes to Mexico” (LDCH S2;E1) as well as the backdrop for much of the film. Although Desilu filmed establishing footage of the hotel, the cast stayed in Hollywood, while Monroe went on location (as seen above). In “Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere” (TLS S4;E20), Mr. Mooney says he wouldn’t buy a second hand nightie if it had been worn by Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot.
Tumblr media
The Irving Berlin song “There’s No Business Like Show Business” was sung on “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show.”  Although it was originally from the Broadway musical Annie Get Your Gun (1946), it also served as the title and was performed (by Merman) in the Marilyn Monroe film There’s No Business Like Show Business in 1955.
Tumblr media
In 1952, Marilyn co-starred by Richard Widmark (”The Tour” ILL S4;E30) in the film noir drama Don’t Bother To Knock. The film also featured “Lucy” players Lurene Tuttle (Fine Arts League President), Verna Felton (Mrs. Porter), Gloria Blondell (Grace Foster), as well as Harry Bartell, Olan Soule, Robert Foulke, and Bess Flowers.
Tumblr media
That same year, Monroe starred in We’re Not Married! opposite Lucy’s friend and former co-star Ginger Rogers, as well as Eve Arden (”Hollywood at Last!”), Paul Douglas (”Lucy Wants a Career”) and Eddie Bracken (Too Many Girls).
Tumblr media
One of Monroe’s most iconic moments came in March 1962 when she sang “Happy Birthday” as a birthday present to President John F. Kennedy in a public birthday celebration also attended by Lucy’s friends and co-stars Jack Benny, Jimmy Durante, Henry Fonda, Danny Kaye, Shirley MacLaine and Elliott Reid. A year later, Lucy Carmichael also gave Kennedy a present, a sugar cube replica of the White House on “The Lucy Show” with Elliott Reid doing Kennedy’s offstage voice as well as playing a small on-camera role!
"I never quite understood it, this sex symbol. I always thought symbols were those things you clash together! That's the trouble, a sex symbol becomes a thing. I just hate to be a thing. But if I'm going to be a symbol of something I'd rather have it sex than some other things they've got symbols of." ~ Marilyn Monroe, 1962
Monroe was married (and divorced) three times:
James Dougherty, Merchant Marine & Policeman (1942-46)
Joe DiMaggio, Baseball Player (1954-55)
Arthur Miller, Playwright (1956-61)
Tumblr media
In “Lucy is Enceinte” (ILL S2;E10), Fred gives Lucy a signed baseball for his future 'godson’. When he asks Lucy to read out the signature, she at first says “Spalding,” the ball’s brand name, but then finds it is signed by Joe DiMaggio.
Tumblr media
In “Ragtime Band” (ILL S6;E21), Little Ricky asks his Uncle Fred:
LITTLE RICKY: “Who’s Joe 'Maggio?” FRED: “'Who’s Joe 'Maggio?’ You talk more like your father everyday.”
Tumblr media
In “Sales Resistance” (ILL S2;E17), Lucy compares herself to Willy Loman, the title character in Death of a Salesman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Arthur Miller first produced on Broadway in 1949 and made into an Oscar-nominated film in 1951.
Tumblr media
Speaking of husbands, Desi Arnaz has something in common with Marilyn Monroe, too. Both of their souses were accused of being Communists by the House Un-American Activities Committee during the 1950s. Both Lucille and Arthur Miller were cleared of charges and their careers continued, although that was not true for many celebrities of the time.
Tumblr media
Monroe died on August 4, 1962. The toxicology report showed that the cause of death was acute barbiturate poisoning. Empty medicine bottles were found next to her bed. The possibility that Monroe had accidentally overdosed was ruled out because the dosages found in her body were several times over the lethal limit.
Tumblr media
The character of Ginger, the movie star castaway on “Gilligan’s Island” (1964-67) was described during casting as a combination of Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe. Tina Louise had Lucy’s red (ginger) hair and Monroe’s shapely physique. The series also featured Natalie Schafer (Phoebe Emerson) as Mrs. Howell, and Alan Hale Jr. as the Skipper. Hale performed on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy”. Series creator Sherwood Schwartz was a Lucy fan. His brother Elroy Schwartz actually wrote scripts for Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
In the 2013 web-series “Ryan & Ruby” both Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe are given special thanks for their inspiration. The last name of star and creator Ryan Burton's character is "Carmichael", the same as Ball's character on the "The Lucy Show". In Ryan’s kitchen there are fridge magnets with photos of both Lucy and Marilyn.
Tumblr media
Lucy and Marilyn are street characters at Universal Studios theme parks, their iconic hair and costumes making them instantly recognizable.
The same day Marilyn Monroe was born in 1926, another Hollywood icon with connections to Lucille Ball was also born, Andy Griffith.  To read his birthday blog, click here!

Postcards from Snagglepuss: Taking leave of Catalina and her underwater charms
“Maybe I ought to bring Clementine along to Catalina sometime, Snag,” explained Huckleberry Hound over breakfast with the Catalina Diving Clowder the morning following our dive experience in the Casino Point Dive Park. “I could just imagine her feeling captivated at what it’s like underwater off this here pretty isle!”
“I couldn’t agree with you more,” said I over bites of omlette and hash browns.
“And we certainly wouldn’t!” chimed in “Bubbles,” leader of the Diving Clowder, as she was fixing breakfast and getting some dive-related discussion out of the way. “Besides, next time you get the opportunity, Huck, why not bring your darling Clementine along? We could teach her some diving technique as well.”
“That’s a mighty interesting offer of you all,” Huck added. “Much accepted ... and will keep that in mind when the opportunity presents itself!”
“Still,” saith I, “I should mention something rather interesting coming over the summer among us fellow Funtastics ... it turns out that Rex Beach, Minnesota, on the shores of Lake Betty, is going to be the Funtastics’ gravitas, rendezvous even, for the summer months!”
Which saw Jessamaine asking “What exactly explains this?”
Continues I: “The Rex Beach Casino, we will have you know, is welcoming both The Banana Splits and the Cattanooga Cats for a series of concerts over the summer months ... and as if that weren’t good enough a distraction for what seems like a declining lake resort among Minnesota’s Ten Thousand, Peter Potamus and his divers are going to offer ‘taster’ dives, you might say, in Lake Betty.”
To which Jayne remarked, “Let me guess: To sell overpriced SCUBA lessons.”
“Heavens to Jacques Cousteau!” exclaimed I. “Their actual mission is one of introducing people to the experience that is SCUBA diving ... and they do plan to offer lessons, but mostly to such as are from disadvantaged groups.” [A short pause for breath.] “Did I mention that Peter Potamus’ crew are as much certified SCUBA instructors, AmbassaDivers even, than documentary stars?”
“Thanks for the reminder,” Jayne noted.
“As a matter of fact,” added “Bubbles,” “we also happen to be AmbassaDivers ourselves!”
“Heavens to Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum! Doublemint, Juicy Fruit even! Now THAT has to be speaking volumes for spreading the word about the Underwater Glories of the Magic Isle, Catalina even!” (That allusion there was to the fact of William K. Wrigley, as in Wrigley’s Gum, having been a longtime owner of Santa Catalina Island, as in the Catalina Island Company, who in 1973 turned over its ownership interests to the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy--in particular much of the inland acreage of The Magic Isle, for the sake of natural preservation ... and did you know that Wrigley’s Gum was originally offered as an inducement to buy baking powder from door-to-door salesmen, only the gum proved more popular than the baking powder?) “No doubt sure to make you proud of yourselves among us fellow Funtastics!”
To which Jayne responded, “We already are. And by the way, is it true that Peter Potamus learned diving by way of utterly naked Polynesian natives?”
“Correct,” said I. “It was his late father, Perry Potamus, as encouraged him on during a journey to such islands of the Polynesian region as remain unmapped, uncharted even ... heavens to Gilligan!”
Huck couldn’t help but chuckle at the allusion, but before we took our leave, the Clowder presented us with one of their legendary “thank you” packages of a selection of their diving videos, plus some anecdote-laden books discussing their diving experiences and their dive-infused philosophy of life in such a diver’s paradiso as Catalina Island. I mentioned that we plan on sending them a letter or two from Rex Beach during our Convocation.
“Oh, and lest we forget,” added I. “You familiar with the ‘pop-up’ shortwave station of Honey and Sis? At any rate, do tune in for their worldcasts from Rex Beach, which may come when you least expect them! They are ALWAYS rather bemusing, entertaining even!”
And to a queen, all agreed. And we headed on our way back to the mainland via the Catalina Express.

All About Eve (1950) Adapted to Television
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Without spoiling too much, All About Eve is a movie about an understudy that seems like a fan of the main character but is actually trying to take her place. This plot device has been used often in film since then (Black Swan comes to mind), but there have also been episodes of TV that are direct copies of the movie. Here are three well known examples that I have seen that clone the movie:
Gilligan’s Island, “All About Eva”: Another castaway named Eva shows up on the island that looks exactly like Ginger (the movie star) and this girl tries to take the place of Ginger. There is a little bit of a change up in that this girl is a twin of Ginger (played by the same actress, Tina Louise). This might fall more under the idea of “Man in the Iron Mask” in which a doppelganger takes over, but the title of the episode and the time in which the episode comes out screams a copy of the film.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show, “A New Sue Ann”: Sue Ann Nivens is a popular cooking show host (played by Betty White) and she hires an understudy that is a fan of the show. This understudy turns out to be very conniving and wants to take over Sue Ann’s show. This is a direct copy with a younger starlet trying to take over the position of an established star. If the concept of the film sounds good but you want a little more comedy and a shorter run time, this is a perfect  option.
The Simpsons, “All About Lisa”: Lisa Simpson becomes an understudy for Krusty the Klown and tries to take over the show. This is another exact copy of the film and is even shorter and animated. You can get the plot in a variety of different media and it is still good.
I have pointed out references to movies like The Godfather in past posts but this is the first movie that goes past references in pop culture and instead inspires direct copies. The film was an example of a watershed moment in film in which a veteran is pitted against a newcomer over the spotlight and the newcomer tries to take over through fake adoration and manipulation. lt is a whole lot of drama and absolutely fascinating, so give the original a watch and you can appreciate all the different homages all the more.
