Since you've watched a lot of kdrama, what are common things you've seen in kdrama that have been consistently ported into K-BL, and what is your assessment of that approach?

Ooh, interesting question. So first, let's acknowledge a few things:

Korean bl is short format, with even the longest shows (Light on Me, The Eighth Sense) not even half the length of a standard kdrama (16-20 hours), and most clocking in around 2-4 hours

Kbl operates under much smaller budgets and significant constraints around casting as compared to mainstream kdrama

Kbl often draws from webtoons and manwha and mostly does not have the kind of auteur writers and directors behind it that you get in kdrama (Hwang Da-Seul is the most consistent creator in genre with Where Your Eyes Linger, Blueming, To My Star)

All that said, there are a few features of mainstream kdrama that have definitely ported over into kbl despite these constraints:

Slick production values and strong use of setting and color: even the cheapest kbls still look decent, and there is always intentionally behind the setting and use of color palettes to set the tone and feel. Korea has a very well-developed film industry and it shows. Color Rush, Semantic Error and Blueming were fantastic examples of this: even within more familiar school romances, the settings felt specific and the use of color to communicate character and themes was striking. I also think often of Our Dating Sim and Choco Milk Shake and the very effective characterization work achieved through design of the apartments.

Sound production and music on point: the home of kpop is not going to be caught sleeping on the OSTs. Nearly every production has original songs and given the leads of these shows are usually idols, they're often the ones on the tracks. And when they use music that is not original, like in The Eighth Sense, it's a very intentional choice to set mood and tone. Korea is not going to let a boy who can't actually sing take the mic (*side eyes Thailand*). To My Star is a great example of memorable OSTs even in a fairly low budget production, and Wish You and Sing My Crush showed us what kbl can do when it decides to bring the full kpop treatment to bear.

A keen understanding of the international audience: kdrama production is a big part of South Korea's explicit goals to take the global media landscape by storm, and kbl is included in that. It's not a coincidence that Korea decided to step up its game in this arena shortly after Thai bl exploded (shoutout to 2gether and pandemic lockdowns). Kbl follows trends and explicitly caters to international audiences in a way jbl does not. The Eighth Sense was basically a case study in marrying kdrama sensibilities and western aesthetics for maximum international attention.

Second leads and valorization of unrequited love: you and I have discussed this one a lot because this is a feature of kdramas that will never die and that kbls also clearly love. Korea loves a one-sided love story and culturally, there is a certain dignity afforded to owning your feelings and being honest with the object of your affection, even when there is no hope of reciprocation. Often second leads don't get the guy/girl because they hesitate or hide their feelings until it's too late: the trope is used to underline the important of honesty and effort as well as providing a catalyst for the main lead to make their move. In Korean culture, the trying is what matters much more than the succeeding. We are meant to like most second leads and see them as honorable and dignified for their sincere feelings toward the protagonist. Second lead syndrome is a thing for a reason. It's also just a cheap and easy way to create drama so you'll often see it in the lower budget kbls. Second leads showed up recently in kbls like The Tasty Florida, Jun & Jun, Oh! Boarding House, Bon Appetit, etc. We also sometimes see kbls playing with the idea of unrequited love in the main pairing that is actually requited, like in Our Dating Sim.

Love triangles: relatedly, Korea loves them a love triangle, and they are uniquely good at doing it well when they want to. Light on Me is a fantastic example of a narrative where you can legitimately see the protagonist liking and ending up with both the main and second lead. And that is rooted in the way the narrative treats Daon with dignity even as it punishes him for his hesitation in reciprocating Taekyung's feelings (see above). When you have a strong second lead who engenders real sympathy with the audience, love triangle excellence is achieved.

Workplace romances: kdrama loves workplace romances, and we have seen kbl start to move into that space recently with shows like Roommates of Poongdock 304, Love Mate, Our Dating Sim, Jun & Jun, and The New Employee. Kdrama workplace romances run the gamut, but they often feature chaebol characters paired with a "normal" aka not wealthy person, and we are starting to see that more in the bl genre as well, as we discussed a bit yesterday. I believe @nieves-de-sugui commented on your post about how the rich/poor romance fantasy trend in recent bl may be coming in from kdrama. I think there's some truth to that, but really it's a foundational romance trope that predates kdrama by literal centuries, and is absolutely rooted in heteronormative patriarchal dynamics that assume men are breadwinners and caretakers for women (translated to seme/uke dynamics in bl). Often in kdrama the chaebol character is unable to live an authentic life due to the demands of filial piety and the expectations tied to their wealth, and I do think that dynamic is ripe for enrichment when you layer on gay identity in a homophobic society. But that requires shows leaving the no homophobia bubble, which few kbls have done.

Physical intimacy squarely in the middle space: comparing to heat levels we see across the spectrum of dramas, I think kdrama and kbl are pretty consistent in that they tend to land right in the middle of the spectrum. It's rare to see straight up dead fish kisses from romantic leads anymore (though it still happens, wincing at Unintentional Love Story), but they are also not going to be serving authentic sex scenes. What you get instead is very pretty open-mouthed kissing that feels more realistic than, for instance, the pure jbl lane, but still polished and aesthetically pleasing. Think Semantic Error, Blueming, Roomates of Poongdock 304, Love Mate, To My Star 2, Jun & Jun. This seems to be where the genre is landing and I don't expect heat levels to get any higher for kbl, as this is right in line with mainstream kdrama. The Eighth Sense offered a less polished version of intimacy that felt right in line with its grittier sensibilities.

So, after that long list, on to your second question: my assessment of this approach is that kbls are doing fairly well for themselves when you consider the constraints they are operating under. Look at a show like Love Tractor stacked up against something like Hometown Cha Cha Cha. These are both based in the classic romance trope of a city slicker coming to the country and falling in love with a humble working person. But where HCCC has 16 hours to build a quasi-enemies to lovers narrative with a rich community of side characters, LT has 3.5 hours to achieve the same thing. So it makes sense that it would fall back on well-worn tropes and story beats it knows the audience will recognize to help save time. These shortcuts help the audience ground themselves and get invested in the stories quickly.

One thing I'll say is that kbl mostly stays in the romcom lane with very occasional ventures into melo, and despite what casual observers think, kdrama actually has a lot more to offer than that. It's a giant world with stories based in every possible genre, tone, and style, and Korean media is particularly adept at embedding romance plots that actually work in all kinds of stories including action thrillers, horror, crime narratives, mysteries, supernatural and fantasy epics. I'd love to see kbl try this, though of course it would require the resources and runtime to do it successfully. Here's hoping they get the chance.

Two so far, a semicolon on the back of my neck (gotten before the semicolon tattoo movement) & a paper crane on my right wrist in memory of my late best friend. I want to get several more and have been actively ignoring the itch because my big wedding ceremony is in October... but after 👀 I think I was a big crow on my back/across one shoulder. And a few other small ones I've been thinking about. I've also always wanted bats behind my ear so maybe that too.

Glasses! I'd love to wear contact but, fun trivia for your Friday, did you know that taking birth control longterm literally changes the shape of your corneas? I didn't either. But I'm pretty sure that happened to me and now I can't wear contacts without extreme discomfort. So, glasses for me.

This is such a hard question for me to answer cause I have wildly fluctuating obsessions and right now I'm most obsessed with my own fictional characters, but. Kaz Brekker will always have a place in my heart. I loved him from his very first appearance in Six of Crows. Same for Nikolai Lantsov in Shadow & Bone. I loved Alina for the longest time too but I think her depiction in the show soured me on her a bit, idk. I have a lot of strong feelings about the Netflix adaptation I could write a whole dissertation on. I've also held the Abhorsen series (& Sabriel) close to my heart since I read it literally in middle school. I re-bought Sabriel a while ago and need to read it again.

I don't remember for sure if our most recent trip was to Houston when we got engaged or to North Carolina for my husband's best friend's wedding. Either way, it's been too long since we traveled and I need to go somewhere stat! haha

I've been thinking about this a lot recently and after reading some of the other asks on here, especially about Larry, I'm wondering more and more if Van is an actual narcissist. I don't mean the adjective I mean the personality disorder, like actual narcissistic personality disorder. Just the way all his relationships seem to be about him, him giving Larry the job to keep him around, pitching it to everyone like he was being so generous and caring for his bestie when actually like you said, Larry did his laundry and like, just supported him all the time. And then with Bondy, narcissists surround themselves with interesting, talented people so that they can bathe in their light and pretend that they are just like them, they use them to boost their career. So that would be why Bondy didn't feel like he could make his own music, because he'd have been fully just working for Van. The same with when Bob left.

Also worth noting that whilst Bondy comes across as quite charismatic and confident, all the boys Benji, Bob, Larry and from the way Bondy has described himself in the past, are actually quite introverted and quiet. For Van to have surrounded himself with people who just aren't as cocky and boisterous as him, that he can talk over, that he can take places with him... Narcissistic relationships often start out as a two way thing. The narcissist gives the introvert the social opportunities/career opportunities that they aren't confident enough to persue on their own... Whilst the introvert gives the narcissist constant reassurance and that light I spoke about before. Eventually though because narcissists are like parasites these relationships implode and fall apart and everyone is emotionally traumatised.

It would make sense with his failed relationship too, the way he said they would argue about her walking home alone, and she would say "well you're not here to pick me up I don't have a choice" and then he'd get mad at her. He pitched it as protective and loving but actually like, it highlights his expectation that people please him despite his own choices and decisions.

He even says it himself "narcissistic but fuck it I'm calling" like openly admits he feels entitled to everyone's time and attention all the time.

Idk that's how I see things now anyway and j feel bad for shitting on a man when he's down but yeah... Unignorable signs in my humble opinion.

bestie i hope you go into psychology or psychiatry bc you have your dissertation written already!! see i think van is at least somewhat self aware…genuine narcissists are unable to recognize themselves as the problem or take any accountability and i think van at least realizes that he’s uncompromising and difficult at times. he seems to act sad/guilty too so I don’t think he’s oblivious to the world around him or the impact he has on others. i don’t want to stigmatize personality disorders or mental illness but thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! 💜

For me, I think I’m gonna say that I love that my hands are soft (I think it makes them soothing and comfortable) and I love that I had a really great realization with my mental health recently (I struggle with body image and ED stuff and I was dangerously close to falling really deep into it last year but got help before it got serious. My body has changed a lot since, which is hard. But I had to weigh myself to see if I could donate power reds at a blood drive and even though the number was a lot bigger than I expected, I was happy because it meant I could do something really good and I’m happy that my first instinct wasn’t to do bad things to my body). I also love that I’m more confident and able to work on self esteem stuff :) thank you for a lovely challenge animal anon bestie :) <3

Bestie I am so busy 😭 And since we’re on the subject now you have to hear all about it lmao. Basically I’m trying to finish this paper do I can submit for publication, and download the data for my dissertation except it’s literally like 3TB of data so I have to like. Download a bunch of individual datasets, decompress them, extract the info I need and delete the rest, and repeat that like 300 times. And the files are big and all in .json format which Python is bad at dealing with quickly, so figuring out how to do that efficiently is a process. And, on top of that, my advisor and I are trying to get some other data ready for this project we’re working on and we basically need it done in the next few days so we can train some undergrads to do some coding on it? So I have been hustling and it does not help that she is in Europe rn so we’re working around a time crunch and a huge time difference. I’ve basically been working nine hours days the last week and a half which anyone who knows me well will tell you I never do. And, either my allergies are bad or I’m getting sick 😩

Anyway, all I want to do is write about Shig and finish this chapter of Bad Ideas but my brain is a big pile of goo and my body is weak, but in my fantasies I am shilling out chaotic Shigaraki thoughts instead of any of things I’m actually doing.

Anyway, GUESS WHAT TODAY IS!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 It's been one year since I started animal anon! How exciting is that?! Phew, what a year we've had together! I mean what better way to start this second year than some chaos since that's how animal anon started to begin with! I will admit, it was slightly stressful coming up with something to meet the occasion of this event. I hope the countdown and this post live up to it. No, I'm not going to reveal myself just yet.. maybe that will be for year 2...😏😏. BUT I will give you some fun facts about me! So let's see; first, I'm from the Midwest (so not Canadian, but close so I do have a slight accent), but I currently live in the TriState area. Second, I am a MASSIVE theater nerd. No, seriously I have been to 21 shows since Broadway reopened in September and I'm actually going to my 22nd tonight. I don't know if this makes that fact better or worse, but I've really only been to about 12 different show because out of those 22, 10 of those are one specific show. Third, I am fluent in German and English. Though, I suck at writing in German, I never learned how to, so don't ask me to do that please. Fourth, my favorite color is red, so you can guess my favorite Taylor album (and coincidently also the show I've been to see 10 times on Broadway...). Fifth, I love to talk A LOT if you couldn't tell by the essays I send yall. And lastly, I can also confirm I am not Taylor...but I will say that I do share something very important with her... tell me your guesses down below as to what very important thing you think Taylor and I have in common, and I'll send some extra animals to whomever I see gets it right first!

Omg this is so long. If you're still here, here are some of the works that I'm proud of. 1)This itsay set. This was my first time doing big gifs and although this is loooong I like how this turned out, specially the colouring. 2) This cause do I do anything except 2g shitposting? No <3 I had this idea even before s2g aired but decided to wait so that I have more shots from s2g and I'm glad I did cause Earn basically got confirmed as a wlw so (Also special thanks to Terry cause the Man and Air hc were hers,her phd brain ikr) 3)This cause dcjsdjidi SARAWATINE SOULMATES. I love how the colouring turned out despite the fact that ps crashed halfway and I lost the gifs i spent 2 hours colouring. I tried to do this with scenes from the series only but couldn't cause wHen YoU aRe wItH yOuR cAmeRA SHOW US goddammit. If this was ao3 this would've been tagged as Tine teepakorn loves Sarawat guntithanon xD 4) Still2gether textposts obviously. I KNOW that 90% people follow me for my 2g shitposting and I got an ask once saying how were they so accurate and the reason for that is I spent HOURS on these. Atfirst it took a long time but after a while I got the hang of it. It was fun (though sometimes tiring) to make these after each ep aired. I'm proud of it and the fact that I managed to do 13 parts? gsjsdjsj 5) Still2gether subs that looks fake but aren't. shutup this was my first time giffing but it was funnnnn looking for the (canon) crack parts after every ep aired.

Disney wants every thing for themselves. Annoying. I'm hoping for a revival. Hope we get it. They announced tosay that they will nevr work with Scarlett again after her lawsuit. Insane.

I will try to find articles or movies to show you what I mean about catholism ruling someone live but in gist there are so many microrules that you need to do everyday. It really limits your growth as a person, you need to be smart to get out of the mindset and eapically for matt who has in an orphanage and there fore didn't have many outside connections. Technically you are not allowed to think anything else beside what is given to you. They have the notion of believe don't question.

You can alsp take into account the fact he decided to become a lawyer. It's not an easy job and especially for an orphan it is like an achievable dream? Sure he wants to help people but does he actually benefit from it? And if the devil is the punisher what is Matt as a human?

As for when it comes to a romantic relationship because he definitely loves women, how much is he willing to contribute to a relationship or does it give me thw urge to run away and hide? We could be talking about it all day. He loves the warmth of a relationship for sure.

oh, if it's not a bother for you that would be very interesting! i did go to a catholic school but was never very catholic myself, so for me its very hard to grasp. but i can see how, when you were raised very catholic and were in a orphanage for most of your life, that could play a large factor in your personality and actions. i like to think he will grow out of this 'limited' mindset and decide that he isn't half as bad as he thinks he is.

Third, I am fluent in German and English. Though, I suck at writing in German, I never learned how to, so don't ask me to do that please. Fourth, my favorite color is red, so you can guess my favorite Taylor album (and coincidently also the show I've been to see 10 times on Broadway...). Fifth, I love to talk A LOT if you couldn't tell by the essays I send yall. Hi. I wasn’t the anon who sent the Heath Ledger ask, but I unfortunately was the anon that sent the ask about “being heartbroken” about Joey not finding me beautiful, and I’m so sorry that this has probably led to other anons asking about his personal life and his mental well-being.

I do realise that I was digging abit too much into Joey/Jaskier’s personal life, and I realise that it’s not good for him, but I am glad that he is/was okay and he’s got healthy boundaries.

You’re right that we don’t know whether he dates men or women {Yes! We had that video in Paris where he appeared to be on a romantic date with Ellie Nunn, but they could’ve been “just friends” for all we know}

I just want to let you know, as a fan that I’m sorry for over worrying about what could led my future heartbreak, I just worry, as I have heard rumours, and I’ve seen other people get heartbroken in the past.

Whatever happens to Joey, I am happy he’s got a good support system with Madeleine and his sisters.. and tbh I’m more interested in Yennskier than the Geraskier ship.. and I’m interested to see more projects that Anya and Joey do together {I wouldn’t mind seeing them playing leads in a romcom or playing Flynn Rider and Rapunzel in a live action remake of Tangled, even if the animated to live action thing is getting overly tiring now}

My dear Nonny, I am so sorry I missed this until now. I am guessing this came in around the time of the Context For Torture Scene dissertation.

You have not a single thing to apologise for, I decided to give context to Joey's torture scene because I saw people being angry/sad about it, when there was no reason to be. I also hope Joey is happy and healthy and smiling and having a good day. I want him happy, always and know he has a great support system for when he can't be.

In the Paris videos, he and Ellie could be besties or romantic. Who knows? Not us. (what I do know is they are absolutely adorable: "The crazy man with the bag on his head." "I think it's fetching." and their laughter and the smallest lift in the world WHAT CUTIES) Who Joey is, has, or will date is nothing we can control and therefore nothing to break our hearts over.
