Digital Piano Buying Guide | How to Choose a Digital Piano

There are a lot of 'top 10' lists, articles and videos out there when it comes to digital pianos. In fact, we've done a number of those here at Merriam Music. Today, we have something a little bit different for you with a new digital piano buying guide.

How is this article going to be different? Well, instead of focusing on specific models that we think are the best digital piano, like a Yamaha P-125, YDP series, or Casio Privia, we're going to share a list of important considerations you should be making when selecting a digital piano, and we're going to put that list in a very specific order.

If you follow the order as we've laid it out, in our humble opinion, you're going to wind up with a type of digital piano you're thrilled with, and in much less time. This set of criteria is based on our decades of experience both in terms of selling pianos, and playing and performing on them too.

You always hear about the same kinds of things you should be thinking about when selecting a digital piano, but rarely are these things put in a specific order of importance. We're trying to change that here.

Digital Piano Buying Guide - 5 Things to Consider

Portable or Stationary?

The very first consideration you should make when buying a digital piano is to decide if you would prefer a portable or stationary instrument. Will you be taking your piano out of the house with you frequently, perhaps for live performance gigs, or will it generally be staying in one place?

This is a pretty major fork in the road for the market, and once you make a decision in this regard, you'll be going down a clearly defined path.

If you decide portable, you'll be brought into the realm of things like a traditional piano. The Roland FP Series, the Kawai ES Series, the Yamaha P Series, the Korg B series, and the Casio PX-S series, as well as things like stage pianos.

If you're fine with something stationary, you're suddenly going to be able to entertain a whole host of home digital pianos with high-quality built-in cabinets and three-pedal systems (sustain pedal/damper, sostenuto, and soft) that come standard.

You're generally going to get stronger amplifier and speaker system combinations with a console digital piano as well.

Piano Touch

The next consideration is going to be touch. Touch on a digital piano or real piano is not equal to any other single feature. In fact, it's like asking a golf player how a club feels when they swing it or a tennis player with their racket. Touch is the tool you'll constantly be interacting with that actually functions as an extension of your hands. If the hammer action doesn't feel good, odds are you won't have a positive playing experience.

So, you're going to want to find a weighted key piano action that you enjoy playing. Now, this has to be balanced with the budget you're going to work with. You could try a piano key action that you absolutely love, but if it's way beyond your budget, it won't matter. But what you'll want to do is make sure you find a key action that you're satisfied with at a budget that you're comfortable with.

Odds are, you won't want to settle for anything less than a weighted action with 88 graded hammer keys if learning to play the piano is the goal. Perhaps you'll find out escapement is a must or a wide range of touch sensitivity on your weighted keyboard.

Piano Sound Quality

The next thing you'll want to consider is the piano tone. Some people might put features above tone but, for us, odds are you'll be among the majority of people who spend most of their time playing with the default grand piano patch engaged, making tone a more important consideration.

Once you've found an activity that you like, you'll want that action to be triggering a sound engine that inspires you to want to play. There's quite a range of acoustic piano tones that are available out there, both in terms of the technology being employed and the actual character of the sound. And things like reverb can make a big difference.

When demoing sounds, we'd recommend trying both the onboard speakers and plugging in a set of headphones because the headphone technology that's available now can give an extremely enhanced experience out of the keyboard that has a lacklustre sound when playing with speakers.

And again, the big focus here is making sure you get an acoustic piano sound that makes you want to play. We wouldn't worry too much about a certain note polyphony count.

If you use synths or other electronic keyboard sounds a lot, apply this same principle.

Features and Connectivity

Once you've gone through those first 3 considerations, your list should be starting to dwindle down. Now you can focus on the specific set of features that you want.

Do you need your piano to have Bluetooth connectivity and get app integration? What about a 5-pin MIDI connection for a MIDI controller?

Are you okay with just a few onboard sounds, or do you want a few hundred different sounds including lush electric pianos and synthesizers? Do you need some onboard arranger features? Do you need a microphone input or a line out to connect to an amp? Do you need an onboard recorder with playback?

These are some of the major components that fall into the features category. Now, there are going to be quite a few basic features that pretty much all digital pianos have, like a metronome, transpose, headphone jack, etc.

Price Point

Finally, after you've made it through those first four considerations, the conversation now comes down to price. One of the biggest mistakes people make is putting price first, and this is a mistake because it confuses the path to finding the right piano.

When you put the price at least, it doesn't mean that you've increased your budget. Sometimes, in fact, it might even mean that you've lowered your budget because there's an extra cost associated with a feature set you don't actually need.

At the same time, there's no point in spending $500 on an entry-level instrument you're not going to enjoy playing, when you could bump the budget to $800 and end up with a new piano that you love playing, for example.

Maybe it's actually going to be worth it to spring for that higher-end, higher-quality option with the genuine feel of an acoustic piano. Only you can say.

While some musicians remain loyal to acoustic pianos, digital pianos are definitely taking over. Digital pianos are lighter in weight, making them more portable, and compared to some of the better acoustic counterparts, these cost a lot lesser.

imagine accidentally buying too many tickets to a concert (bought 2 like you planned but freaked out when the ticket price was too high with the student membership so you tested again and the price was fine it’s just you chose the concession ticket and panicked again bc you don’t remember whether a student can buy a concession ticket so you bought a regular ticket (and the price was reduced like the membership advertised) but you checked again and yes students can still get the concession price so in the end you have 3 tickets) and you invited both a high school friend who you’ve been hanging out all the time and a guy who you met in a tutorial and he’s a piano major and now you’re freaking out bc you don’t know how he feels abt meeting someone he hasn’t met (bc he’s super shy and awkward) or how your hs friend feels meeting a music major

also now you’ve spent a week’s worth of pay on this fiasco :)

Was super tired since I woke up at 6:30 for work this morning then got home at 4 and am the SECOND i walked in the door I started getting a migraine aura and I wasn't sure if I could take my emergency migraine medicine with my accutane so I suffered for 2 hours and then figured it was easier to ask for forgiveness than permission and just fucking took one and I still have the headache but no aura and no matter what natural remedies I try I can't get the headache to go away so I'm just gonna go to sleep at 8:30

#i only rarely get migraines now #used to get them like constantly pretty much every day a few years ago #and im wondering if its cause i started playing the piano the last few days cause that font is so damn small #and i know that small font is a trigger for headaches for me so thats why i read digital books to adjust the size #but i want to work through the migraines as best i can and hope that maybe my brain will get used to it again?#but anyway im wondering if maybe my being super tired the last 2 days was an indication i was gettinf a migraine #idk #i gotta call my dermatologist and see if i can actually take those pills or not in case i get more but hopefully i wont

──── The gentle melody of piano and harp paint the room in an array of romantic hues. Snow drifts through the Winter air from outside the frozen windows of the venue. Family and friends stand around and admire the beautiful scene before them. You're adorned head-to-toe in white, like an angel who had just descended from the clouds. Miguel is dressed in the finest suit he searched high and low for to ensure it was perfect for this day. However, he knows no one is paying attention to him when you look as breathtaking as you do. His rough-skinned, yet gentle-mannered hand rests on your lower back, the other interlocking your hands together. With your head resting against his shoulder, he sways your body along to the gentle hum of music pervading the air.

Your first dance.

The golden light from the chandelier above serves as a spotlight for you and Miguel. Feeling his chest begin to shake, you move your head to look him in the eye. Tears of sheer happiness were cascading down his cheeks and a weak smile is plastered on his face. You swear that if you were to look up 'devotion' in a dictionary, the way he is looking at you would take up the entire page.

Miguel briefly disentangles his constricted hold on your hand to express his current, overwhelming feelings. He points his middle and ring finger down, the rest of the digits left pointing up. "I love you," that is what he is telling you. When he had first learned you were deaf, he spent his nights studying ASL and SSL in order to communicate with you. However, that single symbol is the one he always finds himself reverting to when all other signs and words fail him. I love you, I love you, I love you. Although Miguel won't express it verbally, he will express the three words through his hands for as long as he lives.

And Miguel remembers the best day of his life just as much as the worst day.

Just one month after you had both gleefully tied the knot, the two of you had gone on a stroll through Nueva York. The moon hangs heavy in the sky and darkness settles against the faint streetlights. Miguel made the vow to always protect you and you've found it to be comforting, relaxing. After a whole lifetime of being deaf and mute, you knew that you were far more vulnerable than others. Knowing you have the Spiderman as your husband causes your concern of any potential assailants to fade away. It's evident in the way his grip on your waist tightens when passerbys walk by and the perceptible shift in his eye when someone stares at you for a little too long.

You've always known he wouldn't let anything happen to you.

The following events all happen quicker than either of you can think. Just as you're crossing the bridge that overlooks the entire city in all its glory, a sudden black hole forms, framed with iridescent hues and overwhelming force. The power of the portals sudden appearance causes the bridge to vibrate beneath your feet. Screams of terror from pedestrians falling to their death goes unbeknownst to you as Miguel holds you against him with constricted tension and hides your face in his chest. The man you have chosen to spend the rest of your life ignores his duty of being the city’s superhero. All in favor of your life.

The remnants of the platform you stood on soon crumble. The red glare of Miguel’s web shoots from his wrist, to where it wraps itself around one of the numerous pillars spread upon the bridge to ensnare you further. But it was so quick, the way you slip from his tenacious grasp. Almost as if someone had forcefully snatched you from him. Innocent civilians shout and plead for Spiderman to save them, but Miguel can't hear them over the thumping of his own heartbeat. Even if he were to hear them, it would not stop him from tearing this entire city asunder in order to get to you.

He forms his hand into the same sign he uses to say 'I love you' and another blaring-red web, the same hue as his panic, springs from him and down to wrap itself around your body. He's done this a million times for others and saved the lives of practically everyone in the city. But, this is you. Miguel is digging his claws into crumbled pieces of the wreckage and shoving them through the air as if they were merely nothing, all in favor of saving you. However, you're both picking up speed and accelerating closer and closer and closer to the unforgiving ground. He latches his talons into a protruding pipe caused by the chaos and clings tight to the web connecting you with him, watching in trepidation as you continue to fall. Attempting to pull the web towards him and bring you back into his arms, where you belong, his efforts were futile.

A loud crack! permeates and his world falls apart.

Practically faster than light, Miguel is pummeling to the ground and to where you now lay. Your chest is flat with no breath and your body is lifeless. Blood is caked on your skull and it cascades onto the pavement beneath you. He rushes to your side, a mantra of ‘no’’s invading the dead, silent air. His heart is paralyzed in his chest as reality sinks into his bones. Desperate pleads escape through loud, violent sobs, begging for you to just open your eyes, hold your hand up, and tell him 'I love you, too'. He knows you cannot hear him, he knows this. But, this does not stop him from begging you, begging God, begging the universe, begging anyone to not do this to him, to not take away the only thing that has ever mattered to him. The only thing that has ever made him happy.

He'll never forget how he had stayed there for hours, ensnaring your lifeless body in his arms as the night faded into dawn. He'll never forget when he left you through brute force and was sent back to the desolate building he could only call home when you were in it. He'll never forget how he had spent days upon days studying the sudden black hole that formed and declared to destroy whoever caused it. The person responsible had taken you from him and if every soul in the galaxy has to pay in order for him to avenge the only one he loves, then so be it.

A year had gone by and every second without you become more tortuous than the last. Things that made him once glisten with joy only make his empty heart lurch with grief. Miguel is now present in the Spider-Society, desperate to manipulate any and all sources to eradicate who had so selfishly taken you from him. He'll just have to endure the yapping teenage-spiders that push at his buttons for the time being. All for you, he reminds himself.

At times, unbeknownst to Miguel, he'll start mumbling your wedding vows under his breath in front of the other spider-people to ease his mind. He knows it by heart; he will never forget it. They may all stare in disturbed confusion, but to mention your name to a man like him would be nothing short of a death sentence. "It's a soft spot, don’t poke it" Jess informs the others.

When the day is finally over and his everlasting efforts were brought to no avail, Miguel will return to the house you had planned on spending the rest of your lives in. Together. All life has been sucked out of the property. The wedding photos scattered about the premise have been derelict with shattered glass after enraged fits. The 'Just Married!' paint still sits on his car and decays with age, but he refuses to ever scrub it off. Your wedding ring, wedding dress/suit, and flower bouquet sit in indestructible cages he operated to preserve them. He fidgets with the wedding ring he vowed to never take off as he wallows in the despair of his silent home. If only he had been quicker; if only he hadn't been so weak.

The video of you dancing in matrimonial bliss ends and the monitor shuts off faster than Miguel could even blink.

The hefty, metal doors to the headquarters open to where several spider-people enter, pantomiming dramatically about the success of their previous missions. Their sudden appearance startles him, to where he demands to know why Lyla hadn't informed him of the spiders' incoming. Jess then enlightens him on his strict rule he set to not disturb him whenever your face is on screen. He exhales with a sigh of defeat and prepares himself for the onslaught of mayhem that would soon come his way. This time, however, a new recruit has joined the group.

Full-body suit hiding any form of physical identity and a soft voice that rarely comes out, Y/H/N from Earth-555 was requested to join the team by Jessica Drew herself. And Miguel couldn't care less if he tried. He'll let another spider on the team if it means keeping the multiverse stable and fueling his progress to one day finally kill the one responsible for your demise. Still, something allures him about this new recruit. Their real name and face are left a mystery to him, but there are certain moments with this stranger where he can't but be reminded of you. That soft voice and heedful hearing prevent him from fully indulging in your memory, but there are certain tics and habits they possess that catch him off guard.

The way you tap your feet when you’re focused, the way you scratch your wrists when you’re anxious, and the way you fidget with the hem of your clothes when you’re bored. And this is what life had been like for a while. Staring at the countless monitors that display a myriad of different information until his brain rots and returning hole to bathe in his misery until the next day repeats.

Several months into Y/H/N's time here is when the doors to the headquarters slam open and several spider-people all clamor in. All were breathless and bruised from a mission that ended messily. The new hero is in the mayhem, as well, exasperated as they rest against the wall. Miguel rolls his eyes at the sudden intrusion and leaves his spot at his desk to find out what these idiots had done now. They all scramble to defend themselves and point their finger at one another, while that new recruit is still trying to catch their breath in the corner. Pathetic. They should know by now that the sake of the multiverse can't afford even a minor mistake. Seeing them left so weak after a fight causes a dry laugh to escape his throat.

Their gloved fingers then grasp hold of the hem of their mask, before forcefully yanking it from their head. And it is like a miracle had materialized right before Miguel's eyes.

His stomach drops at the sudden intrusion of emotions. Shock, elation, disbelief, infatuation. Y/H/N, Earth-555's Spiderman, is his Y/N. You stand before him as you did all those years ago. Despite the dirt and blood smothered into your exposed skin, Miguel thinks you look almost as beautiful as you did when you walked down the aisle.

All you do is clench your eyes shut and try to wait for the pain in your abdomen to ease. The clattering arguments of the others only add fuel to the flame that is your suffering. Soon, there is a sudden wave of silence that washes over. Even with the agony coursing through your body, you were still able to catch the abrupt shift in the atmosphere. You open your eyes to find the man you had feared most, Miguel O'Hara, treading towards you and towering over you with his large figure. Paralyzed with fear, you had jumped to the conclusion that you had enranged him in some way. The terror is so overwhelming, you completely miss the sheer look of love in his eyes and how his pupils had morphed into the shape of a heart.

Eventually, you gain control of your numb body and make a break for it. Pain pumps like a drug through your damaged body, but you persevere and use every sliver of strength left in you to run from him. You're running through the city, dodging past all the numerous spider-people, and webbing through different buildings to escape this maniac of a man. During this, your name and demands for your return are shouted profusely. You don't have time to acknowledge how on Earth he had found out what your actual name was.

Mistakenly, you take a quick glance over your shoulder and almost shiver with fear at the sight alone. Miguel is barrelling after you on all fours like some sort of fucking animal, with fangs and claws out and all. Broken glass protrudes into his limbs from the numerous windows and walls he barreled through. Blood seeps through the torn cuts of his suit, exposing his bruised skin. The excess of vermillion webs clutters the complex from his frivolous attempts at retrieving you. It is utterly terrifying.

Somehow in the midst of chaos, you had found yourself back in the headquarters. The 'Go-Home Machine' practically calls out for you with its luminescent hues. You hear the muffled shouts of your name and the thumping of racing footsteps. In an attempt to use your webs for faster travel, you realize that during your chase, you had entirely run out of web fuel. Shit. From here, you resort to using your legs for once and practically throw yourself into the machine. The translucent spider above uses its limbs to piece together bits of the portals' walls as if it were merely stacking legos. Hope pokes at your brain, but you don't dare let yourself think the storm had washed over just yet. A deafening crash then permeates through the headquarters.

"STOP THEM! NOW!" The echo sends a chill straight into your bones. You watch the machine sputter with increased energy and hope that with enough time, this predator on your tail will find something else for dinner.

Miguel springs into the air as if he were weightless, before landing above you on the thick facade while it buzzes from heightened energy. You have nothing but this wall to protect you from this absolute rabid dog. Sheer trepidation caresses your skin with it's ice-cold touch as he attempts to claw through the membrane of space and time protecting you.

He is bone-chillingly terrifying as he slams all the strength in his body against the barrier. It becomes increasingly difficult for him to keep his grasp on the machine as it continues to charge with intensifying energy. This does not halt his efforts, though. If anything, Miguel has now become increasingly aggressive as the prospect of you leaving him again becomes more profound. The technology whirs from every punch and thrash Miguel gives in order to get to you. Static bolts of energy protrude the air like lightning bolts when he is finally able to tear a hole through the surface, eyes wide and crazed like some sort of beast.

In an attempt to stop him, you try and piece together the chunks of radiation that had been discarded from his unwanted entry. Upon doing so, Miguel is finally able to reach through the opening and dig his talons into your wrist. Your escape was right at the edge of your fingertips, but now you have been flung straight into the jaws of this monster. You splat harshly against the ground and with the state your body was now in, you knew for certain you could not fight anymore.

However, you don't even have a mere second to think of leaving anymore. Not when this vampire-spider has you pinned to the floor with ease faster than you could produce a single thought. He begins to shush you like a baby while you fight and thrash at his chest. His large hand cups your cheek with the same softness you would use to handle a kitten, while the other utilizes his strength to restrain your body.

"I got you! I got you back with me!" The pitch in his voice had raised as he pours his heart out to you. "I never thought I would see you again, but you’re here. My Y/N, you’ve come back to me…” Red eyes are blown wide and they practically stare daggers into you. All as if you were some sort of prey.

The only thing his words do justice in is confusing you further. What you had perceived before as anger was actually... Desperation? Relief? Love? This man has never spoken a single word to you for the entirety of your several months spent in the complex. You are perplexed as you try to think of what had triggered him to suddenly act this way towards you.

"I will never let anything happen to you again... Just let me under your skin..." Miguel's lips find their way down to your ear as he whispers to you the same way a lover would. The entire moment is so deranged, it makes you shudder with horror.

His teeth then sink into the nape of your neck as if his fangs were two needles. With a yelp, you feel warm blood escape and seep down your flesh. Something new swims through your bloodstream that was induced by his bite. Your body begins to fail you and lethargy envelops you like a warm blanket. And this man is like goddamn Dracula, slurping and drinking every last drop of your delicious essence. His calloused hands savor the feel of your body against his and he indulges in how much he had missed this, missed you. With a final, feeble attempt to defend yourself against your assailant, you're soon enveloped into a deep slumber within Miguel's embrace.

This is it, the big one. Huge sequence for the lovely @ tawnyscrawnyleo ! This lioness seems to just get hungrier and hungrier every date... Eventually the need for Quantity overtakes Quality.

I also wrote a story for this, find it in the show more! Though I think it's best read on my FurAffinity ;3

Soft notes of piano dance through the air as you settle in at the table, across from your date. Her sparkling red dress matches well with the gleams of light you catch from her sharp fangs. The conversation is slow and steady, interrupted only by sips of wine and tastes of appetizers. As the night stretches, so do your dates orders, plates slowly becoming more abundant; an extra side order, a refill of buttered bread, another bottle of wine. Slowly but surely the lioness completes it all, leaving you to watch as she works through the high class spread. She's sat back and sighing contentedly when the bill arrives, her dress pulled slightly taut around the middle. The only thing that interrupts your enchantment is being handed the check- and realizing this may not be the best place to satiate a girl with such an appetite.

Sat under the warm lights and ambiance of the restaurant, your date smiles up to you. Once again the lioness has dressed up for the occasion, smiling up to you and brushing away errant locks of mane. Less jewelry accents her figure than before, rings having become too tiresome to remove from her rounding digits. By the time the waiter comes around, she's already hungry, with a stacked order to prove it. Her ramble of platters and pots and dishes entirely dwarfs yours, and it's not long before the table is buried in a delectable, steaming feast. The pace at which her deft, pudgy paws go between foods is impressive, whole loaves of garlic bread and glasses of wine sacrificed to her muzzle. She looks so cute eating that you don't find yourself minding when you miss the chance to try appetizers, group snacks no match for her hunger. Thank goodness the bread sticks are unlimited…

Helping the lioness from your car, all the way into the diner is becoming more and more of an arduous task. Her once fanciful gait has slowed into a powerful, proud waddle, the best of her curves wobbling with every methodical step. Despite how much effort it takes, you still make sure to show her a good time, as you often do! Dates becoming purely meals is nothing new to your relationship, but the scales have been tipping in more ways than one. Her gut has grown alongside her average order, both of them totally absorbing your attention, to the point that you forget to ask for any food for yourself! Thankfully, the hedonistic lioness before you had ordered more than enough for two- or a family, for that matter. Between bites (and belches) she encourages you to try the occasional greasy diner dish, and while certainly you got your fill, it was more like having popcorn for a movie. Stacked sandwiches, warm drinks, breakfast platters and more slowly dwindled in population until there wasn't an occupied plate in sight, the meal punctuated with the purr of a burp from the other side of the table. You can't help but smile at how cute and satisfied she looks.

You've been here a while- at least an hour or so. Your thinly veiled excuses to leave the house for food have dwindled, now a mutual agreement to heave the lioness to the nearest fast food joint in order to let loose. She's done just that, fur slick and marred with the grease and debris of her gorging, an uncountable mass of calories processing away in her belly. And what a belly it is, pouring out in front of her and dominating the space between you. The table creaks and crackles beneath the weight of her upper tummy, struggling much like the bench under her. There's little attention to petty details from the lovely lioness, who is entirely preoccupied with the greasy feast. Burger after stacked burger are devoured, with breaks rarely afforded for glugs of soda or labored wheezes for air. The employees are staring, other customers gazing at the display- but who could blame them. You're staring too. It's barely relevant when a nervous fox comes to set down another oily bag of sandwiches, more for the immense pile. The purrs and wheezes from the massive lioness, the complaints of effort from her belly, make you all the more sure you came to the right place. You'll have to take her here tomorrow, too.

Best Digital Pianos for Under $1,500 | Brands, Models & Features

In a way, we’re kind of in a new golden era in the piano industry these days, especially with regard to how realistic digital pianos have become. The amount of high-quality, convincing options with great piano sound available for under $1,500 is truly remarkable.

Today, we’re going to go through our essential list of the best digital pianos available for under $1,500.

Best Digital Pianos: Brands & Models

For people who are already familiar with our site and YouTube channel, you're likely to recognize most of these models on our list. On the other hand, for people who are completely new to the whole piano universe and have perhaps just browsed Amazon so far, this should be a helpful lay of the land in this popular price range.

Roland

Roland easily makes the list of manufacturers that have a strong presence in this part of the market, and really, the entire market as a whole.

Our resident piano reviewer and company President Stu Harrison is of course a huge Roland fan and even gigs on an RD-2000. In this price range, there are two big reasons why Roland’s models - the RP102, FP-10 and FP-30X - stand out.

Roland's PHA4 Action

The first is definitely with regard to the key actions. All three of the above-mentioned models use probably the best digital keyboard piano action available in this price range - Roland’s PHA-4 hammer action.

The PHA4 features things like a triple sensor for accuracy, escapement, and a nicely textured keytop - all hallmarks of actions found on models twice the price of the models we’re looking at here.

Bluetooth Connectivity

The second reason Roland really stands out for this price point is their solid integration with apps via Bluetooth connectivity. Bluetooth connectivity gives the user fast and seamless connection to a smart device where many free and highly useable apps are present.

Roland’s own apps also greatly expand the functionality of both the FP-30X and RP102. Now a little more on the specific models.

Roland FP-10

With the FP line in general, you're looking at a set of well-built, portable, and versatile digital pianos. The FP-10, in particular, is one of the lowest cost, highest value instruments on the market as you're essentially getting a PHA-4 action wrapped around a very compact case.

It’s lightweight, easy to transport, easy to use, and still includes Bluetooth MIDI.

The SuperNATURAL sound engine is very solid, and there’s 96-note polyphony to work with, which is just plenty for solo piano playing.

The speaker system itself is a bit underpowered, but some sacrifices have to be made given the price that an FP-10 can be had for.

Roland FP-30X

Moving up to the FP-30X (recently replaced the Roland FP-30), which basically takes everything already great about the FP-10 and simply adds more.

A huge upgrade is the addition of discrete quarter-inch output jacks, which makes the FP-30X a truly viable option for gigging musicians.

Bluetooth Audio gets added to the mix in addition to Bluetooth MIDI, the speakers are much more powerful, and Roland adds their BMC chip which takes the sound quality to a whole new level, expands the polyphony to a staggering 256 notes and delivers a wonderful grand piano tone, electric piano sounds and stable of other tones as well.

Roland RP102

The RP102 is a perennial favorite that Roland has had around for several years now, but it’s still delivering a lot of value to the marketplace. The PHA4 is again present, but in this case, you’re also given a nice cabinet with an integrated triple pedal unit.

On-board features are limited, but via Roland’s apps, the features greatly expand with tons of sounds and rhythms suddenly made available.

For many folks, the RP102 checked enough boxes that upgrading to the Roland F-140R just didn’t make sense.

Yamaha

No list of the best digital pianos in the sub $1,500 category is going to be complete without at least a couple of entries from Yamaha.

Yamaha is an industry juggernaut, and there are some super popular options on this list that are definitely worth considering.

There are two models that we’ve chosen to highlight today - the P125 which has been with us for a few years and has been one of the world’s best-selling portable digital pianos since its release, as well as the DGX-670, which is a new update to the DGX660.

Yamaha P125

The P125, the little sibling to the Yamaha P515, delivers a combination of features that were first to market and have since been adopted by other manufacturers.

For starters, the P125 is equipped with a built-in USB audio interface which allows you to send audio information directly to a DAW without additional gear.

Secondly, the P125 raised the bar with its excellent speaker system that really brings crisp, clear audio. Add in the great CFX sound engine, and the P125 is definitely one of the best-sounding portable options in the class.

Now, the FP-30X has probably objectively exceeded what the Yamaha P125 is offering since it’s a newer model, but the FP30X also costs more.

The GHS from Yamaha has been out for a long time and as such, is probably the most basic key action on our list, but it is still a serviceable graded hammer action and won’t be a detriment to a beginner.

Yamaha DGX-670

The DGX-670 is a very different beast from the P125. Both pianos use the same GHS action, but the DGX-670 is more of an arranger keyboard as opposed to a musical instrument geared towards solo piano playing like the P125.

Being essentially an arranger keyboard, the Yamaha DGX-670 comes with numerous recording capabilities, onboard auto-accompaniment and hundreds of sounds. It’s a completely different experience than the P125 overall.

The DGX-670, while being hypothetically portable, is likely to be found more in stationary situations since it’s quite heavy.

Other notable Yamaha options also worth exploring include the Arius series Yamaha YDP-144 and Yamaha YDP-164. The Clavinova series of digital instruments, while hugely popular, exceed the $1,500 price point.

Kawai

If Kawai is known for one thing at this price point, it's going to be the quality of its acoustic piano tone. While their high-end digitals are known for their industry-leading keyboard actions, there’s no doubt that the biggest selling feature and point of value in this category is their sound engines.

There are four Kawai models we’re going to explore here - the KDP75 and KDP120 home digital pianos, along with the portable ES110 and ES520.

Kawai KDP75

The KDP75 is a home console digital piano, meaning it comes with a built-in stand, triple pedal, and Kawai also includes a free bench in the box. The KDP75 is a new update to the KDP70 and with that, they have improved the key action’s cushioning which enhances the playing experience.

They've also updated the core acoustic piano sample and improved on the polyphony. You can think of the KDP75 as a great alternative to the RP102 - a preference will come down to which combination of tone and touch speaks to you.

Kawai KDP120

The KDP120 replaced the critically acclaimed Kawai KDP110, and it maintains the killer 40-watt-rated amplifiers, which makes it one of the most powerful instruments on our list in terms of the sound system.

Like the KDP75, the KDP120 also received an upgraded action with improved cushioning with the new RHCII action. This is another triple sensor action with nicely textured keytops that is only bested by Roland’s PHA4 on our list.

The well-regarded PHI sound engine offers a stunning rendition of the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX real acoustic piano. While both the KDPs are a little light on other features, the focus here is on the home piano experience, especially with regard to sound.

Kawai ES110

Kawai’s ES line matches up against the Roland FP line and Yamaha P series. The ES110 has been around since 2017, but it still delivers Bluetooth MIDI, really strong speaker performance, and 88-note individual samples on the EX Concert Grand with a quarter-inch line out.

All in all, the ES110 is functional, lightweight, easy to play, and provides killer acoustic piano tone in a small package with a respectable, dual sensor action.

Kawai ES520

The ES520 is a newer release from Kawai that represents a step up from the ES110 but still costs quite a bit less than the professional level ES920.

For people who are looking for a much beefier speaker performance, a more substantial tone chip with a wider variety of different sounds, and an improved triple sensor action experience, you'll want to check out this ES520.

You can think of it as a deluxe version of the ES110 with virtually every aspect upgraded.

Casio

Casio has the most entries on our list with a total of 5. This isn’t to say that we like Casio any better than the other manufacturers, but it speaks to the fact that this category is Casio’s bread and butter, even if they’ve expanded all the way to the high-end market, especially with their Celviano grand hybrids, in recent years.

Casio Privia PX770 and PX870

The Casio Privia PX line is an absolute mainstay for the home digital piano category.

The PX770 and PX870 are very similar but serve up slightly different offerings. The PX770 is probably most comparable with the Kawai KDP75, while the Casio PX870 matches up against the KDP120.

The big difference from the 770 to the 870 is that the 870 has a nicer cabinet, and features a 4-speaker system with a killer 40 watts of power. The power output is the same as the KDP110, but the addition of the two extra speakers provides better upper partial harmonics.

Compared to the Kawai models overall, the Casio options don’t have quite the same level of tonal complexity. On the other hand, the Casio’s do cost less than their Kawai counterparts and feature tri sensor actions, so the value that Casio brings is undeniable.

Casio PX-S1100 & PX-S3100

Casio’s portable PX-S1100 and PX-S3100 are also very popular in this price range. Both have really sleek-looking cabinets and are slim and very lightweight.

The 1100 emphasizes piano tone while the 3100 is almost a full-fledged stage piano with easily assignable knobs, a couple of modulation wheels and an enormous number of onboard sounds, all of which are remarkably high quality (especially the synthesizers).

Both pianos have a very solid set of speakers, as well as Bluetooth MIDI and Audio connectivity. Even though the actions use a dual sensor, the touch sensitivity is still very good due to some new smart technology from Casio.

Casio CDP-S350

The final model on the Casio end is the CDP-S350. This is a very interesting little beast as they've essentially taken the content of the PX-S3100 and put it in a more simple frame, with less complex processing power.

The sound is lower fidelity than the S-3100, as is the polyphony and the action is simplified, but otherwise, this is a feature-heavy instrument with 700 sounds for a very affordable price.
