What if the Zoroark Ingo uses in the path of solitude is his own Zoroark and that’s part of the reason Zisu’s zoroark hates him?
Ingo refuses to use Zisu’s Zoroark for the path of solitude because it will NOT listen to him. He has to resort to using another Zoroark, probably one that Akari caught herself from the pasture. For some unknown reason, this just ends up making Zisu’s Zoroark even more mad at him.

I’m not sure if this has been already asked before, but what inspired you to make art?
First time someone's asked me this, actually!
But, my art is a very strange amalgamation of inspired things, because I take inspiration from everything I get into to be able to improve my own artwork. But if you're asking direct inspirations (as in what really started me to draw) then I'll end up talking about both. Because I like rambling lol
What started making me draw probably isn't what most people expect from me,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I was a young kid, I would primarily stick to drawing really simple shaped characters. Kirby and Starfy characters were really easy for me to draw, and it helped me branch out to drawing more complex things like Pokemon or characters I liked from Brawl. (Captain Falcon was a character I mained extensively in Brawl and REALLY wanted to draw him as a kid. I still main him in SSB Ultimate alongside Kirby!)
Though, I did have way more relevant things from my childhood that probably left WAY more of an impact on my current art style today than anything else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Resi 4 and Resi 6 specifically are the RE games I remember the most clearly from my childhood. ESPECIALLY Resi 4. Kind of strange to hear that 8 year old me ended up getting into these games alongside shit like Kirby, but my parents were never ones to really 'censor' what kind of gaming content their kids consumed and I would always watch my mom play through Resi 4 and Resi 6.
Resi 6 especially had a big influence on me because of one certain guy...
Tumblr media
It becomes a common theme with me and evil blonde men, for some reason.
LIST OF AMALGAM'D INSPIRATIONS I'VE ACQUIRED FROM OVER THINE YONDER YEARS
This is either going to be really long or take nearly no time at all to write out. So here we go.
The most GLARINGLY obvious inspiration in my work (and has been for years) is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Tumblr media
Jojo part 1 and 4 had probably the biggest impacts on my art-style today. I even own Hirohiko Araki's Manga in Theory and Practice book which helped me draw muscles the way I do! He has an entire section in that book showing off his sketches and how he drew bodies during the development of Jojolion, which helped me out tenfold in regards to drawing muscular bodies to get results I wanted.
Also can't forget the.. Most glaring awakening I had in my entire life because of this series.
Tumblr media
fuck you jojo
Berserk is a much more recent inspiration but its weaseled its way into my art in quite a few ways.
Tumblr media
I've always loved Dark Fantasy as a genre, but consistently despised how it was handled. I avoided Berserk for a lot of reasons, but man binging it was probably the best decision I could've made even if I'm late to the party. It is DEFINITELY not a story for everyone, but I read it at a time when I think I needed it most in my life and it'll always stick with me for that. Berserk isn't a perfect story by any means, but I will always appreciate its influence and the ways it handled trauma as a subject. I still hope one day to capture some of the gorgeous aspects of Miura's artwork in my own, if that's even possible.
Skullgirls was a big inspiration in my work as a young'un, surprisingly enough.
Tumblr media
It was a Fighting Game that really got me into FG's as a whole, and I think its really cartoony and 'bubbly' style absolutely inspired the way I draw a lot of things today. Eye shapes, thick lines, bright and poppy colors etc etc.. SG definitely had an influence on my work, even if it's hard to see today buried underneath all my other inspirations.
Osomatsu-San is probably my most shameful inspiration. To date.
Tumblr media
It's not a bad anime or anything. In fact, it holds up really well. Hell, I've been planning to binge it again someday when I get the chance.
It's shameful because I got into it at its peak, where people really had a hard-on for shipping the brothers. And still do. I will refrain from commenting on that, but speaking as an ex-"blmatsu" it was probably the most shameful time of my entire life LMAO. I was a stupid fucking kid and I am extremely glad I grew out of it.
Despite my frankly cringe-infested past, this was still an anime that ended up really kickstarting my artstyle into the more cartoon-y side of things. It also is the anime that made me love coloring my lineart things other than pure black, the deep blue of the Osomatsu lineart has always been really appealing to me and I've always liked it from an artist standpoint. I've always been meaning to draw more matsu stuff.
Yeah yeah, hold your horses, but I read Chainsaw Man before the anime was even ANNOUNCED so give me a break here.
Tumblr media
I'm an insanely huge shounen fan, if it isn't obvious already. The only thing is that I am a picky shounen fan. Chainsaw Man ended up scratching an itch other modern shounens like Demon Slayer or whatever couldn't really reach, which was how it handled monsters.
The monster design in CSM is probably the BIGGEST reason it's up here, it is one of my biggest inspirations with creature design and generally making unique looking beasts. This mixed with Berserk ends up making a horrid amalgam of beasts in my head and what I want to create someday.
Speaking of creature inspirations, here's something that isn't a manga or anime.
Gemini Home Entertainment is, in my personal opinion, one of the better analog horrors out there.
Tumblr media
Analog horror is really oversaturated nowdays, but GHE is such a cool end-of-the-world scenario with peak body horror that I can't get anywhere else. Scarcely uploads, but christ when it does it's haunting and I love it. GHE is also a big inspiration for a character I have that i've been working on!
Do I have to explain this next one. I never shut up about Guilty Gear. No big surprise.
Tumblr media
GGST is the first FG i've gotten into that really kicked in how much i really love FG's as a whole.
Plus, buff men. I'm a big fan of tit what can I say.
And before this post gets too long, here's some honorable mentions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
sorry this post is so long but . I have a LOT of inspirations always.

You know what would be a big plot twist, the villain is somehow Volo with a different name.
I'm not quite certain how that'd work tbh. I mean, I assume you mean he'd be like an alternate reality Volo or something?
I know I've seen some fun idea on tumblr about Volo actually being immortal and using that to go into the future and use Emmet to sorta get revenge on the main character/try his hand at meeting Arceus again, it's not really something I want to do myself.
I mean, I love those ideas, and I'm excited to see where the artists and writers go with it, but the idea of Volo as an immortal isn't really one that appeals to me.
To be clear, I haven't played the post-game of legends Arceus yet. I've been dragging my feet filling out the pokedex rather than completing the main story so I'm not sure if maybe there's some character moment or something that implies Volos immortal or something. Still where I stand currently I prefer the idea that Volo is a purely regular mortal man who has become dangerously obsessed with meeting Arceus to the point of Villainy. I like this both because it draws some fun parallels between Volo and Cyrus in the original Sinnoh games, and because it just makes Volo's character a tad more compelling for me. Again, this is just me.
Beyond that, I also have the fun idea of Volo actually helping out when it comes to dealing with the fallout surrounding Emmet's actions. I mean these events are taking place between the end of the main story and the end of the post game so the big reveal about Ingo's realy intentions haven't happened yet and, in fact, I can imagine all this rigmaroll with the disappearing nobles is wrecking hell with Volo's plans.
Like, Volo wanted the player character to collect the plates for him so he could take them and use them to encounter Arceus. With all this junk going down as a result of Emmet and Elesa showing up no one is looking for the damn plates. A fact that probably frustrates the shit out of Volo.
If nothing else Volo is looking off in the vague direction of this (likely oc) villain and flipping them the bird while vowing to "kick them outta my territory" or something like that. Volo's got his own villainous shit going on and this half-baked extremist from the future is ruining his plans.
So yeah, there's that.
Beyond that tho I imagine the villain who brought Elesa and Emmet into the past in the first place is largely motivated by an obsessive view of history, or more specifically a very misplaced view of it. I think he views "the future" (that the is the present state of the pokemon world that the player character, Ingo, Elesa, and Emmet are all from) as flawed and imperfect. He views the people of the future as weak willed, driven by their emotions, and lacking knowledge and conviction that the "ancient" people of Hisui had. I even see him, in some villainous speech, using Emmet and Elesa's own actions against them. Claiming that Emmet's misdirected conviction to find his brother and Elesa's feelings of friendship for Ingo and love for Emmet made them both incredibly easy to manipulate.
He points out that the nobles "gave up" all their great power after the people of sinnoh started living closer and closer with pokemon and started needing the nobles power and protection less and less. "Allowing themselves to disappear, be chased out, or become the merest pet of wayward children" is how he describes it.
His whole evil plan is to, essentially, take the past nobles of HIsui to the future with him and use their power to "change things back to their more ideal state" or whatever.
(and just like that over the course of a post I figured out hte villainous motivation lol)
There are holes in this plan big enough to drive a truck through obviously, but tbh I kinda consider that more a feature of villainous pokemon teams plans at this point more than anything else to the point that I'm almost convinced it could be considered a thematic element.
But no yeah, I don't really see Volo being the big bad behind this whole thing in this au. Not when he has his own stuff going on.

Meet Lonnie
So uh...May have made a Hardenshipping fankid.
Tumblr media
His name's Lonnie, an orphan street kid that Archie and Maxie adopted who counts as a fankid in my eyes, god damn it.
I can’t draw muscles or children to save my life.
Originally @cryptidanaphafsi did this I with their fankid I believe?
Info under the cut because I really started to ramble about details...A lot.
Bad Quality picture, but his adult versions both have a keystone in the middle of their mask that they use for Mega Evolution.
Notes:
RSE canon is Emerald, which leads in Alpha Sapphire in the future, though in this canon way, RSE events get resolved Without a protagonist. Hypothetical game futures for the SM and USUM games.
RSE Version -
-Still living on the streets at this point, 8-10 in age.
-Met a few times over the course of the story, usually found hiding around a corner after an encounter with Maxie or Archie(outside of hideout encounters), seems mostly in awe of how cool the plans seem.
-Selectively mute, if talked to he'll make gestures towards the player but since the player is about ten, all you really get from talking to him is "...."
-Jumpy, running off as soon as the player is done talking
-Vitiligo
-In the Sapphire & Emerald versions of the game, post game, he's absolutely Terrified of Kyogre, developing Aquaphobia as he grows older.
-Sometime post game, Archie and Maxie pick him up bc he still seems to tag along just behind one of them, and hey, the kid needs a home. And when they’ve patched things up, they’re really good dad’s.
ORAS Version, constants-
- Adopted pre-game and raised by Maxie and Archie before they split bc of differing ideals...again.
- Mid-twenties.
- Team Magma Admin.
- Aquaphobia from past trauma, selectively mute.
- I can't draw muscles but he's definitely the strongest person there, thanks to Archie and a bit of Matt.
- As an adult, Vitiligo patches have spread and caused part of his hair to grow in white.
- Personality wise, he's a rather nice man, only really being a sore loser. And takes after Maxie alot in the brains department, including dumbassery.
- He’s dating both an Aqua Grunt and a Magma Grunt, don’t tell his dads though. A grunt in the Magma hideout asks you if you want to place a bet on that happens when the bosses find out, then realizes you are Not one of the grunts, and runs off.
- Aqua Grunt is named Dew
- Magma Grunt is named Ashe
- I will draw them eventually, they will be mentioned elsewhere.
Omega Ruby -
-he appears somewhat sporadically, usually around Maxie. Fought once at Mossdeep city when the player beats the gym, viewing the player as a threat to Maxie's goal...and wanting to make use of himself, aquaphobia keeping him from following the rest of the team down to the Seafloor Cavern. Team: Crobat, Camerupt, Mightyena, Sealeo.
-A Grunt, Ashe, follows him around and acts as an interpreter. Talking directly to Lonnie is always "..." before the grunt buts in to explain what he's trying to say.
-When defeated by the player, he'll turn to the grunt, signing furiously, only for the grunt to exclaim "I can't say that to a child!" before Lonnie leaves in a huff.
- During the Delta Episode he's fought at the Magma Hideout, without Ashe, absolutely Livid about what Zinnia did to Maxie, and fighting the player as soon as they enter, seeing them as just something else that'll upset his dad. Team: Crobat, Camerupt, Mightyena, Walrein.
- Post Delta Episode, you'll actually find him alone in a house on the Battle Resort. When talked to, he still won't talk, but after interacting with him Maxie walks in to explain that he and his son were there, trying to lay low, relax a bit, and they're waiting on "a certain someone" to show up for a talk.
Alpha Sapphire Version, aka the Canon Version-
- Not very active story wise, always seen rather ominously popping up mere seconds after an interaction with Team Aqua. He doesn't have an interpreter this time, so all the player really gets is "...." then a yes/no text box before he leaves.
- Appears on Mt. Chimney with Maxie to try and stop Team Aqua's little attempt. Maxie will actually translate some of what Lonnie's trying to say, and while it would be nice, he doesn't exactly explain Why Lonnie tends to be tailing Team Aqua, Archie most specifically
-And ho boy. When Kyogre gets awoken, this poor man is having the Worst day.
- In Sootopolis, he's seen quite visibly shaking, signing Something at Archie, who might be having a "Oh shit." moment and a half because his Son is VERY MUCH AFRAID OF WATER, AND VERY MUCH CAN. NOT. SWIM.
- So yeah. Not a fun time.
- Half of what he's signing is ruined by how shaky his hands are. Ashe looks ready to strangle Archie, and Dew is reeling from the reality and Actually starts cursing Archie out as soon as the player leaves to handle Kyogre.
- Tbh if the two boys didn’t start trying to murder Archie first, Maxie might’ve.
- When Kyogre is captured, when the player leaves and all is said and done, he gives the player a piece of Cameruptite with a small little Thank You note.
- Battle Resort/Battle Maison, he is once again found in a house, but this time Maxie is already there. And once the player talks to the two, Archie walks in, but when that happens, the player is asked to leave so they can have a Family chat.
Sun & Moon Games-
- Okay this is just me being self indulgent and including him in my favorite games of the series, plus it’s just neat.
- Basically, he’s there on a honeymoon with Ashe and Dew.
- Even after the teams disbanded, he’s very partial to his Magma outfit. Only real change coming coming from the removal of the Magma symbols on his vest. Still keeping the combined symbols on his mask.
- More or less appears as a cameo. The only reason they’re even having a Honeymoon in Alola is because it has both Water and Volcanos near eachother.
- Shows up in post game, investigating the Altar of the Sunne/Moone as the idea of other worlds really peaked his interest.
- Funny Images: 6′0″ string bean and a 5′7″ man with average muscle trying to carry a 6′5″ man with muscle from hell because the waves touched him and he freaked out.
Ultra Sun & Moon Games -
- Mostly the same.
- With the addition of the player actually getting his help against Rainbow Rocket
- When reaching the mansion, Lonnie will be there. Along with Ashe and Dew.
- He’ll then “ask” which side the player wants to take on, fighting either Archie or Maxie depending on choice. Vs. Archie, he takes Ashe with him, Vs. Maxie, he takes Dew. The other of his husbands goes with the player to help handle the other boss.
- After this, you can find Lonnie, Dew, and Ashe at the battle tree.
- Funny Images: Trying to get Lonnie onto Aether, a man made island in the middle of the ocean.
Pokespe Version -
- His age is more me throwing darts at a board trying to guess when shit happens.
- He’s alot more playful and joking in this version.
Ruby Sapphire Chapter -
- 16
-Actually adopted prior to the Ruby&Sapphire Chapter, but in a surprising twist, stays mainly with Archie.
- Interacts with Ruby and Sapphire once, maybe twice through the whole Manga.
- Hard for Archie to be intimidating with a giant of a teen in a life jacket clinging to him everytime they get near water, but he makes it work
- He stays with Arche and team Aqua for two reasons and two reasons only
- One, he lacks past trauma with Kyogre in pokespe, thus doesn’t fear water as much and can stand to be around it more. Two, alchoholics scare him more than water ever could.
-Along with that, Archie also has the safer public persona, so win win on his part
- Lonnie, being a teen, does tend to wander though. Barely seen for most of the chapters. When Archie and Maxie have their fight, he's there for a split second, before letting out his Crobat and fleeing.
-I don't have it all ironed out, but basically, the whole battles between Magma and Aqua through the whole arc have slowly built up this fear in Lonnie's brain when it comes to his dad's, and this is the tipping point.
- Sadly, both leaders are a bit preoccupied to notice at first that he's gone, and it's a fullblown panic after the fact.
-Sadly tho, this doesn't slow down their plans. But Blaise and Amber are put in charge of trying to track him down and find him.(Not in a bad way, more in a Extremely worried parents with a missing son way)
- Cue end of arc.
Emerald Arc
-still 16
-Makes brief cameos, he tends to linger around the back.
- Actually, screw it, I'll make this pretty later but he and Emerald do become friends.
- Has a small interaction with Emerald, writing about how he finds his equipment cool, and is in awe of how he calms pokemon.
-And boy oh does this lead to some Fun
- Cut the confrontation with Guile in the cave, the first Jirachi attempt
- Alot changes here.
- First of all, while Jirachi still escapes, Guile lingers for a moment. Looking at Lonnie for a long moment. And while he does 'reflect' back the attacks with his sword, he sends the attack flying off into a wall instead of at Emerald and Lonnie.
- Later, Guile actually snatches the poor kid, pulling off somewhere just to have a few moments to make sure he's okay
- If you know the manga, you know it's gonna be revealed to Lonnie at this point that Guile is, in fact, Archie. And while he tries to avoid the details, he does tell Lonnie he needs Jirachi to fix things
- Lonnie assumes, sadly naive, that this has to do with Maxie and their family. Even asking Archie where his other dad is, only to be met with silence.
- That doesn't settle well with him, actually demanding to know what happens, atleast as much as you can demand when you can’t talk. The last he heard about them was nearly destroying Hoenn so what happened?
- Archie doesn’t tell him, straight up Refuses to tell him what happened.
- This does not go well. Leading to Lonnie once more running off.
- Lonnie keeps in touch with Emerald after the arc is over, basically adopted him as a little brother because they’re both weird looking kids, Emerald being unusually short, and Lonnie having Vitiligo.
- He runs into Amber after this and kind of just, vibes there, treats Amber like an uncle, and that’s who looks after him for the next few years.
ORAS Arc -
- 20
-Lives with Amber, mostly helping the man with fishing and all around, just trying to have someone around he can 'talk' to without needing an interpreter or to write down every word he says.
-Team Aqua....2!
-He does end up joining the New Team Aqua, since he feels more safe with them in Pokespe. Along with this, he’s curious about where they came from and what’s going on here.
-Looks most like my concept sketch for him in this version.
- Eventually just, disepears in the midst of fighting. He's learned enough and doesn't want to face that all.
- Listen when I tell you. When he sees Maxie and Archie, he's pissed.
-And when The Dustening happens...
- He actually does cry. Hell, it's probably the only time he speaks, begging in a hoarse voice he never uses for his dad's to stay there. Just for once. Let them be a family just for Once.
- It doesn't work.
- Funny Images: Emerald, looking up at Lonnie who is like 3-4 times their height: “I AM GOING TO STEAL YOUR KNEECAPS!!!!” Lonnie, amused, signing: “You-can-try.”
-Pokemon Seen: Crobat, Sharpedo, Sandslash.
Sun and Moon Arc -
- 22
-He actually appears here.
- Listen, he's a smart man, and he knows a lot.
-Appears after that small time skip after Sun and Moon disepear through the portals, ultimately he's here investigating the portals.
- He 'talks' with Kukui and Burnet to try and figure out what's going on.
-I don't know how it'd be incorporated, but basically, he's trying to figure out where the Hell his dad's are. And if these Wormholes can help him, by god is he going to use them
- Knows that, most likely, they’re dead and gone for good. But still holds out hope that somewhere out there, they’re still alive.
- He's still wearing the life jacket. Less for Aesthetic, more because he’s scared shitless about being on an island.
- Are this chapter is where he would have started dating Dew and Ashe, having met them when that whole, other Team Aqua & Magma were made in ORAS.

Nothing upsets me more than a legitimately good story being ruined by “extra” content. I’ve already complained at length about Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon’s story changes over the original games so now it’s The World Ends With You: Final Remix’s “A New Day’s” turn because CHRIST
I’m writing this as I come across points while watching a playthrough, so:
God, Coco is the single most insufferable being. “totez hilar” just dated this content so baaaad, and I’d even say it was dated language when Final Remix came out. No other character abuses modern slang as their entire character. Like, slang is used but not as a substitute for personality. Beat speaks in a very casual, urban style but it never ends up being detrimental to his character as a bit of a punk with a “perfect little sister” that he wasn’t as naturally smart as, so he just gave up on trying and ended up being a bit of an aggressive slacker. Heck, he tones it down a bit for emotional moments, too. Coco, though, comes across like her ultra-modern “cutesy” text message slang is supposed to be her personality, and even when it’s revealed that she’s the villain of the episode you just can’t take her seriously through the “like, ohmigosh, I can’t believe you’re ruining my plaaaaaans” bullshit. What does she have going for her if you rewrite all of her lines without that speaking style? She’s just a generic manipulative brat
Frankly I also just disagree with the entire premise of A New Day and the plot threads it sets up for a potential sequel, i.e. “having Neku and Beat run through a game again as a trap to get Neku into yet another game in a possible sequel.” TWEWY is a complete experience and had been for at least a decade. Literally every character had a complete arc. The worldbuilding was rich enough that they had more than enough to come up with a sequel set in the same world, but in an entirely different town with an entirely new cast and, heck, even entirely new rules for the Game that would’ve expanded upon the world of the games without taking away from the characters whose time in the Underground was already done
But, noooooooo, we’ve gotta bring Neku back. Can’t have a game without Neku they literally SAY THAT (”The Game, like, literally can’t go on without Neku.”). And let’s bring Minamimoto back, too, as a good guy! The fans loved him! This doesn’t come across as pandering at all!
Just... you have the girl with the red headphones designed! Make the sequel set in Shinjuku with her as the main character! (Hell, I don’t think I would have even minded Minamimoto coming back for that because there was enough leeway in the base TWEWY for him to have survived his encounter with Josh, just leave Neku out of it). This is the most infuriating part because it actually takes away from Neku’s story. The entire GAME was a test of character to see if even the worst, most closed off person could learn empathy and respect and Neku DID. And in return, that sparked a change in Josh. His story is done. Coco using Neku, though, has nothing to do with him as a character and everything to do with him being the face of the game and it shows
And why the hell is Neku so trusting of Coco anyway? I get that he opened up over the course of TWEWY, that was kind of the point. But you come back to life, everything’s fine, and then suddenly you’re in a death game again and so is one of your best friends, like, he should be WAY more concerned and suspicious. But one little Reaper gives him the sad eyes and he just caves instantly like “fine, come along.” Even when Neku grew to like some of the Reapers, like Uzuki and Kariya, it was still far more of a rival-like respect. He knew damn well that it was their job to see him gone and while he accepted their help when they gave it and helped them when their lives were in danger (possibly, up to player choice), they weren’t buddy-buddy with each other, knowing that as soon as the immediate danger to them had passed they’d be on opposite sides again. And these are the Reapers he’s closest to, even at the end of the game. And then all of a sudden Coco goes “but I’m a wittle wost baby weaper” and Neku’s response is, “well, shit, welcome to the team.” WHAT
I hate using the term “Mary Sue” but Coco is absolutely a Mary Sue in its original meaning. The plot bends over backwards to accommodate her at the expense of the main characters’ personalities or reason, all while giving her a clothing style incongruous with everyone else’s meant to stand out and make her look special and not having her face any repercussions for her actions (so far which is, again, another issue with the very premise of A New Day since that’s exactly how things will end off if TWEWY doesn’t get a sequel, the possibility of which is not a guarantee AT ALL)
Shiki and Rhyme start saying blatantly false things about themselves and handwaving it away with “ohhh, that must have been our new Entry Fee! Just the exact same ones as the first time again!” and only BEAT is suspicious and NEITHER OF THEM are suspicious of Coco, the only non-generic Reaper they’ve met so far. Christ, I appreciate Beat being attentive with matters of his sister because that’s in-character but NEKU was always the more paranoid AND observant one yet all he thinks about is “gee, I’m sure having weird visions today, huh?”
And then Coco starts BLATANTLY gaslighting them about Kariya and Uzuki’s personalities and they’re STILL not suspicious of her like ughhhhhhhhhhh. Nekuuuuuuu you LIVED THROUGH JOSH WEEK 2, you have BEEN IN A SITUATION where the mastermind partnered up with you to divert your suspicion and keep an eye on you how are you less suspicious of this brat than Beat is???
And why are none of the characters bringing up the fact that you have to be DEAD to be in the Game??? You all spent three weeks of hell to claw your way back to life, how are you not more upset about what seems like you all dying again, basically immediately after you just got brought back? And I know the Shiki and Rhyme in A New Day are illusions, but Neku and Beat AREN’T. Nobody even comments on the implication that they’re dead again and what that means!
I can’t believe they made new expressions for the fake Josh’s changed personality but still refuse to make anything for Shiki’s true appearance
Hell, there’s enough lore with Josh that you could make an entire prequel about him becoming the Composer instead of this mess and, you know, EXPAND on someone’s character and what led to him being so disillusioned with Shibuya as the Composer instead of employing the Happy Ending Rewrite on Neku and then gutting his personality to make Coco the focus. I’d LOVE a Josh prequel with competent writing. Kingdom Hearts made the Xehanort prequel and hooked me in a single chapter with expanded worldbuilding and interesting ties with Xehanort’s character to friends that humanize him, do the same for Yoshiya “Joshua” Kiryu!
Pfffffff hire me and let me make the dream TWEWY trilogy: Joshua prequel > TWEWY sans A New Day > sequel set in Shinjuku starring Red Headphones Girl with Occasional Josh and Hanekoma Interaction
It is so unnecessarily cruel to make Beat relive Rhyme’s erasure and subject Neku to believing that Shiki was erased as well, and yet they do NOTHING with it except have it be cheap tension for five minutes. The characters basically say “wow, I’m so sad!” and then IMMEDIATELY move on to “OMG is Neku seeing the fuuuuuture?” Your LITTLE SISTER and FIRST REAL FRIEND IN YEARS just seemingly died permanently! When Rhyme was erased the first time it took Neku one and a half in-game days to even talk about it because he was so upset, and from then on he was focused on avenging her/bringing her back. Shiki was his entry fee in Week 2 and that made him hyper paranoid the whole time! WHY ARE WE JUST GLOSSING OVER THIS especially since they made SUCH a big deal about how they just finally started believing that the fakes were real (after a whole TWO conversations)
And then at the end they say that they’re inside Coco’s Noise that is SO BIG that it has an ALTERNATE DIMENSION INSIDE IT and Hanekoma’s like “I’ve never met a Reaper POWERFUL enough to make a Noise like this. Wow, Coco, you’re so POWERFUL that even I, an Angel, am impressed!” This. Coming from the guy who specifically chose Minamimoto as his failsafe to kill the Composer should the Game go wrong because a Taboo Minamimoto, heavily refined using forbidden methods, would be strong enough to defeat THE COMPOSER. And he’s now going on about how Coco’s the strongest Reaper ever, basically admitting that she’s probably stronger than the Composer of Shibuya. SURE. BECAUSE COCO WASN’T BAD ENOUGH ALREADY SHE HAS TO BE THE STRONGEST REAPER EVER, TOO
And then it just ends with Josh and Hanekoma exposition dumping about how Shinjuku got erased as Noise entered the RG (WHAT?), Neku’s visions were probably caused by the red headphones girl who’s super special (who???), and Coco’s just so special powerful (why...), but it’s not their problem so fuck it. Oh, and also Josh doesn’t care about Neku anymore, despite that being the whole point of TWEWY. Yeah, the guy who flew off all upset when Hanekoma asked him if he wanted to hang out with his friends at the end of the game. Uh huh. Even if he’s lying, why even put that THERE instead of saving it for the sequel?
And then Coco just... revives Minamimoto. Even though, oh, right, the Taboo Refinery stuff was so precise that the only reason Minamimoto came back the first time was because Hanekoma, THE PRODUCER AND AN ANGEL, set it up for him. But I guess Coco’s just soooooo super powerful and knows FORBIDDEN HIGHER PLANE KNOWLEDGE and can just do whateeeeeever she wants. Not like Hanekoma was so paranoid about someone finding out what he did for Minamimoto that he went into hiding, certain that he’d be reported to the higher Angels and destroyed
A New Day is so painfully shallow from a writing experience. It’s a poor continuation off of the solid, complete TWEWY story experience that just doesn’t have a handle on Neku’s character, turning him into this bland vision machine with no emotional connection to anyone. The way that it expands the worldbuilding with “Inversion” does one thing that I HATE, which is taking an emotion-and-character driven story and turning it into a generic “end of the world” scenario, “raising the stakes” in a way that divorces it from what made it memorable in the first place. If Kitaniji directly effecting the RG during the main Game’s plot was the point where he crossed the line in-universe, then that loses its special nature and impact if you then go “oh, btw, Noise can destroy the RG city if you let them”
And then there’s the absolute black hole of a character that is Coco Atarashi. She wasn’t designed to fit into the world of the game, she was designed to stand out. On its own that’s not a bad thing, especially given the themes of the game that revolve around owning your true self and baring it to the world, but then you combine it with no personality beyond being a manipulative brat obsessed with the events of TWEWY, extremely lazy text message slang dressing up her dialogue to make it stand out, the way that Neku and Beat’s personalities change to accommodate her presence just to shoehorn her in and then have a cheap “omg she was bad” twist, and then dumping powers on par with Josh and Hanekoma on her and there is NO saving her character
The only good part of A New Day is “Wake Up.” And even then, there’s better TWEWY songs, I just like the vaguely Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance vibes it has in parts

SwSh Story Concepts
Although the “story” I have with my SwSh playthrough, I did change some stuff with how some aspects work n stuff to my OWN PERSONAL liking So below the cut is just some facts n stuff!  Feel free to ignore if that isn’t your thing! As it is um... just my own silly concepts and ideas that I have for my own personal story with them~
MAY ADD MORE STUFF ON WITH TIME for shit I remember/come up with
The Gym Challenge happens once every year or so, it isn’t a constant thing as that would constantly be a cluster fuck of stuff going on at once and people have lives ya know? Some people still go and try to challenge the gym leaders n such! But it’s THE big televised event. More or less the Gym Challenge Event is a year or two year type of event. Makes it more of a BIG EVENT rather than a “ah yeah this again”.
The gym challengers are sent off to participate in the challenges at different times. They all take the same gym challenge, but merely start at different times. The Veterans (people who have taken it before and failed) go first. Experienced Trainers go second. (full teams, have battled lots before etc) Children go Third (a nice head start for the lil ones) Then Adults (beginners/novices) go last. This helps prevent a adult meeting up with a fellow child gym challenger on Route 3 and beating the hell outta them. A beginner trainer going up against a more experienced trainer etc. Makes it fair for the trainers to travel/compete in groups of the same skill/age level.  This also helps out the gym leaders, that way they all aren’t EXTREMELY SWARMED at once by gym challengers. It’s a fit schedule to help keep things organized, keep track of the challengers etc. You may challenge the Gym Leaders TWICE before you are kicked out. If you lose to a Gym Leader during your challenge, you are allowed THREE DAYS to retrain and attempt to battle them again. If you lose the second time, you are no longer part of the gym challenge and cannot continue. Although most don’t take the chance for a rematch, they feel too disgraced that they lost the first time. But it is always a option for those who are determined to stay within the challenge. The only one you cannot challenge twice is Leon. After the first event, where they introduce all the gym leaders and challengers, there is a sort of “celebrating” ball. All the Gym Challengers and the Gym Leaders are there, just celebrating the new “season” of the gym challenge, having some good old fashioned fun before the intense training begins. Also? I get to design fancy outfits for characters n such and cute interactions don’t @ me.
There is a Budew Drop Inn located in every single city in Galar. All gym challengers have free access to their rooms and a complementary lunch. But anything else they have to pay for. Not a 100% free ride but good enough. During the Gym Challenge event, no one else is allowed to rent a room at the Inn, it is strictly for the Gym Challengers during the duration of the event.
Gym Challengers are given camping equipment to use! The type generally depends on who is sponsoring them, if you are to sponsor a challenger you must supply them with camping equipment! The camping gear tends to be branded or have advertisements all over their stuff, you aren’t allowed to bring your own equipment as you need to have it have your sponsors ad’s all over it. Perfect advertising technique.
Normal Gym Challengers do not have access to gigantamax. As it is such a hard thing to get a pokemon like that. Certain gym challengers have access to it in special cases (etc Bede/Marnie) but in those cases they were most likely given to them via someone of a higher class. Bede given one from the chairmen, Marnie gotten one from Pier’s etc. But normal gym challengers do NOT have access to this type of power during power. As it’s considered too powerful for normal trainers. They may Dynamax, but Gigantamax is considered too powerful.
Some trainers can understand their Pokemon, although it has been known that some pokemon can speak english or through telepathy, but sometimes some trainers can understand their pokemon without it. Although it is rare, it generally only happens to those who are in the deepest possible connection with their pokemon. Trainers can understand their pokemon normally after being around them long enough, but some actually develop the ability to actually hear and understand fluently what their pokemon is actually saying. This is what happens when the strongest possible bond has formed and is again, rare. One CAN have the strongest possible bond with their pokemon and NOT have this, but its just a rare situation. But this also allows me, the author, to have something wholesome with my OC and her starter pokemon, whether its cliche or not.
In Sword and Shield, there are some gym leaders that are only there in the specific version. But in my story, all of the gym leaders are there, the ones with two gym leaders, simply take weekly shifts on who is there! This helps the gym leaders have a life and take breaks and also spices up the gym challenge! As the challengers do not know which gym leader they will face in Stow-On-Side Stadium or Circhester Stadium. It adds some needed spice and element of surprise in the challenge as with those gyms, as they aren’t 100% sure on what they should train for. One could train for both possibilities of the gym leader they will face, but with the time frame they are given before each challenge (about a week or two) it is very hard to do so. They also do not reveal which gym challenger you will be facing until you enter the challenge, so you cannot switch out your team in to have the advantage.
Gym Challengers started the trend of having “Signature Finishing Moves”, not the same as signature moves mind you. They are moves that trainers usually do to finish a gym battle “in style”. They do this as all Gym Challenge events are televised, so of course most want to be flashy or create a name for themselves. Generally only ONE pokemon on their team has this move/routine, whichever pokemon they are most attached too or are known for having. This practice can range from using a certain move to finish each challenge, a dance routine, a move combination etc. Amaryillis’ (trainer OC) has a Finish Move with CheddarSwiss. It is called “Sunglass Clash”, the name was chosen by Hop.  Sunglass Clash is when CheddarSwiss tosses his sunglasses into the air, doing a final attack to finish the opponent, then catching the sunglasses again and doing a spinning pose. The move CheddarSwiss uses changes depending but the sunglasses catch is the real “trademark” of the move. Hop’s Grookey, known as Twist, has the Finish Move called “The Twister”. Which Twist runs around the opponent rapidly, causing the already weakened pokemon to become dizzy. During this state, Twist summons a vine/tree/plant underneath the foe, finishing them off. Twist then jumps back over to Hop and they both do a pose together in sync. The Gym Leaders don’t really have Finishing Moves, simply because they have gigantamax pokemon instead. Gigantamaxing the pokemon replaces the “need” to have a Finish Move, as they are already well known and have the ability to do that.
Okay so for the sake of making things easier for Trainers, imagine they all carry giant ass backpacks and also their like... Bike and such is collapsible n stuff. Prolly don’t carry around a giant curry pot tho, or maybe one that expands into a bigger one. Just please.... pretend everything can be collapsed into their big ass backpacks and they don’t just summon these things outta thin air like in games
//I’ll add more as i remember it and as time goes on~

What do you identify as and what are your pronouns?
I’m even a little shaken by a questioning state right now but for a while I’ve felt the best fit is the androgynous label -- I read a description of it being the purple on a pink to blue scale, both at once but not specifically either one, and something else by itself. I’m also happy with a cryptic masculine grey area. My pronouns are he/him.
How did you discover your sexuality, tell your story?
During the Puberty 1.0 nightmare, I was basically living someone else’s life, and any attraction I felt wasn’t in relation to myself. I felt disconnected from my body and gender and everything too, and I felt a lot of social pressure to experience a certain type of attraction, fit into a certain role, et cetera, and none of these feelings existed in me at all, so I used to identify as ace. When I realized I was trans, I was too caught up in the, transition safely, my life is a lie, stopping dysphoria drama to focus on this, but I had an idea I might be a gay guy judging from my gay creative writing until I caught feelings for a girl and realized this wasn’t the first time that had happened. Some bi positivity and nonbinary rage later, I am reminded that gender is a joke.
Have you experienced being misgendered? What happened and how did you overcome it?
Yes of course A LOT. Starting with my parents, who do it aggressively and maliciously. And plenty from strangers and customers, mostly after hearing my voice pre-transition. It used to hurt terribly because I was dealing with so much other stuff at the time, and one little thing could be the last straw, so I used to react strongly and harshly, to people you express yourself to anyway. On T, I’ve been so much more chill and confident, and it’s less painful to accept that some people just don’t know any better, although that doesn’t change its effect.
Who was the first person you told, how did they react?
I don’t remember, I think it was a high school friend. I vaguely remember texting someone in a bathroom during a crying session at work. My high school friends were all warm and supportive.
Describe what it was like coming out, what did you feel?
It was scary as hell. I’m sure coming out (with your gender specifically) is scary by nature because it’s a huge truth to be telling that can really change how the people you love perceive you, for better or for worse, but for me, I’m also thinking with the dread and certainty that my family would be too conservative and potentially dangerous. Coming out to my family was one of the worst, most painful things I’ve ever been through -- being kicked out and laughed at, a lot of drama, confrontations, Bible readings and being ganged up on at odd hours, trying to comfort my mom who took it as her personal failure -- I was shaking with adrenaline 24/7. I think of the “I’ll suffer through anything as long as it has meaning” comment that was about angsty fanfics, but knowing the truth about myself was a source of unshakable strength and it felt refreshing and even triumphant to say, like I was giving myself permission to exist for the first time. I came out a bunch of times, though...
If you’re out, how did your parents/guardians/friends react?
My family reacted mostly badly, my sister is a little confused but has the spirit, and my friends have been wonderful.
What is one question you hate people asking about your sexuality?
It’s more of a gender thing, but I hate it when people imply that I shouldn’t be on T or are subtly trying to talk me out of it with their questions. After all the disrespectful as fuck bullshit I heard from my parents, I’m tired of this.
Describe the style of clothing that you most often wear.
Zombie apocalypse denim? Gay Layers
Who are your favourite lgbt+ ships?
I’m not really emotionally invested in these “ships” you cool kids are talking about. I like canon, age-appropriate ones.
What does makeup mean to you? Do you wear any?
I’ve never really worn makeup. I brazenly never bothered to growing up, and if it had an effect on me socially, I was too tuned out to care. My sister always wanted to do my hair and makeup, but I wasn’t interested and wouldn’t let her, much to her frustration. I wore some for a musical once though, and I had no idea what I was doing and it was extremely uncomfortable. I felt what I know now is dysphoria and ended up using the lipstick to draw. Another aspect to this is my family forbade it (or my dad made the decision for everyone), not that it made my sister feel less pressured to wear it, so maybe it was some female presentation I could easily get out of. For that reason, I don’t have super strong feelings about it. Not understanding it probably resulted in me feeling left out a lot among my peers.
Do you experience dysphoria? If so, how does that affect you?
Yes. Before my realization, it was a numb horror I wasn’t consciously aware of, ruining nice things growing up to the point where I feel like I missed out on being a teenager. I remember it as feeling nauseous while sitting in a corner, feeling like none of my clothes ever fit for some mysterious reason. Living with my family in the closet, it defined my life, and I was obsessed with my presentation. These days, it does not bother me on that level at all, except a minor freakout now and then if I get really wild and wear feminine clothes. Or I still feel it in more subtle ways, when I default to customer service voice, or when guys my age are twice my height and I look aaaall the way up at them and wonder what gender they see me as.
What is the stupidest thing you’ve heard said about the lgbt+ community?
Trust me, I have heard truck loads of dumb shit and the winner is the Gay Agenda is R****a’s propaganda to weaken the integrity of North America. Considering what is happening over there, it was enragingly stupid.
What’s your favourite thing about the lgbt+ community?
I feel like I can be myself around lgbt+ people. I don’t feel like I have to hide stuff or put on a show, and I’m not afraid because it’s familiar territory.
What’s your least favourite thing about the lgbt+ community?
Aside from obvious problems like TERFs, ace discourse. Ace people are part of the community if they want to be and that’s enough on that, my skin is already breaking out.
Have you ever been to your cities pride event? Why or why not?
I finally went to a Pride event this year! I was surprised it was the first one I’d been to, then remembered my parents discouraged me from going anywhere, never mind to a gay where.
Who is your favourite lgbt+ Icon/Advocate/Celebrity?
I can’t think of many people right now, but Leslie Feinberg seems awesome, and some quotes from Stone Butch Blues are very validating.
Have you been in a relationship and how did you meet?
No. Technically I have been in one, but it was shitty and ridiculous, and basically platonic, and I don’t want it to count.
What is your favourite lgbt+ book?
I barely read… I read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe in high school and it was honestly so precious.
Have you ever faced discrimination? What happened?
Yes. I got kicked out (but then kicked back in again), had my stuff stolen and damaged, was verbally harassed… and I was indirectly fired by an employer, but We Will Never Know Why...
Your Favorite lgbt+ movie or show?
Queer Eye! I don’t know of many though, and some important ones, I just haven’t watched.
Who are some of your favourite lgbt+ bloggers?
My mutuals :D
Which lgbt+ slur do you want to reclaim?
I’m okay calling myself queer.
Have you ever gone to a gay bar, or a drag show, how was it?
No, but I did see some drag performances at the one (1) Pride event I went to, and they were jaw-dropping.
How do you self-identify your gender, and what does that mean to you?
I’m not sure what this question means, but I decide what fits right by what makes me feel the most alive and emotionally real and in the moment. What makes me feel the most attractive to be honest. There’s a post about dysphoria I saw going around, the things on it are basically what I use to figure things out.
Are you interested in having children? Why or why not?
I am actually! Not anytime soon, but I’m the responsible type for sure, and judging by the way I love growing plants and being around animals, I’m probably a nurturing person. I actually like kids too, lol, they’re just so high-energy.
What identity advice would you give your younger self?
You’re a boy. Go!
What do you think of gender roles in relationships?
I think people are going to have different ways of expressing themselves that make them happy, but… I don’t think they should infringe on basic human decency. When I hear “role” I think of acting a certain way because someone told you to, something I want to disagree with on the spot.
Anything else you want to share about your experience with gender?
People move out of my way on the sidewalk and take me seriously now. Privilege or self-confidence… I never want to forget what it used to be like, or get too entitled.
What is something you wish people know about being lgbt+?
That it’s simply living one’s reality. I think that trips up a lot of straight people -- that some people just come like this, and they don’t have to make it fit into their personal identity.
Why are proud to be lgbt+?
Because I worked hard to be alive and happy right now. I’m proud of choosing to get through those rough patches, take care of myself, heal, take walks, cook breakfast, learn healthy coping mechanisms, that was out of love for myself and a defiant conviction that I have a place in this world.

What was the last thing you cooked on the stove? Scrambled eggs back when Sara was here in June... lmao. Have you ever not canceled plans and wished you had? Probably. What is something you were scared of as a kid? Animatronics. Still not a fan. Would you rather write a story or a poem? I'll actually finish a poem. But I mean our RP is a really just a big-ass story and I write for it way more than anything. Are you moving soon? No. Do you get nervous around the opposite gender? Always. This fear of men thing's gotta go. Did you ever have a ‘security blanket’ when you were younger? Yes, a stuffed bunny hugging a little polka-dot blanket. What is your lucky charm? Don't have one. What time does your dad usually wake up in the morning? Well, I don't live with him. But he's a mailman, and if his schedule's the same as it was when my parents were together, early. Name the craziest moment of your life: I guess it depends on your definition of "crazy." But I suppose the night of the breakup when I left the house in the dead of night to walk to his house to talk as Mom wouldn't take me. It's a seven minute drive so would've taken a long time to get there, but I didn't care. Mom eventually went after me and kept cutting my path off with the car until I just collapsed sobbing. Do you think its likely that humans will go extinct in the next 1000 years? No. Eh, maybe, if we do nothing about royally fucking up the environment. If you have tattoos, how long have you had them? Uhhhh I got my first for my 18th birthday, idr how old my second is, "ohana" is like, two years old or something, my fourth is a year old, Sara's tattoo is from last June, and my latest one was a good few months ago. No. What was the last thing you made with your own hands? Does a drawing count?? Have you ever been to a psychic/tarot reader? No. What is the kindest thing you have ever done? Maybe donate a shitload of my hair to charity. I really did almost become teary-eyed when I learned it was truly used. What holiday should exist but doesn’t? It'd be nice to have a day centered around learning about mental illnesses and celebrating survivors of them more than usual, I just don't really know how. What holiday shouldn’t exist but does? Idk. I have holidays where I'm bothered that the meaning was warped, but. If you had to choose would you live on the equator or at the North Pole? The North Pole. What do you think makes someone a hero? People looking up to you for doing genuine good. What cartoon would you like to be a character in? Pokemon. Are you a coupon clipper? Mom is for food. If you could pick one food that you could eat all you wanted but it would have no effect on how much you weigh, what food would it be? REESE'S HUNNY What are your parents interested in? Mom: Surgeries/medical operations and bodily stuff, art, helping people (children in particular), psychology, etc. Dad: Hockey, football, golf, fishing, that kinda stuff. Have you ever caught and tamed a wild animal? No. When do you feel your life energy the strongest? "Life energy?" Not too sure what that means. I guess I feel most "alive" when I'm out in nature witnessing natural beauties, like waterfalls or shooting stars, or driving through the mountains. You are spending the night alone in the woods and may bring only 3 items with you. What do you bring? My cell phone (but keep it off unless needed), a knife, and... I'm not sure. I would say camera or book, but seeing as I'm there at night... OH. DUH. A flashlight so I wouldn't drain my phone's battery using its.

Weekly Fic Recs - BNHA
This is gonna be an experiment in, you know, actually doing something with my disaster of a blog. So! Weekly Fic Recs. Because I read, and have read, a fuckton of fic, and I like sharing. These are all BNHA and Bakugou-centric.
Weekly Rec Lists - More BNHA Recs
Beyond You and I by IvoryCrow
Bakugou/Midoriya, Bakugou & Midoriya, Bakugou & Kirishima, Bakusquad, WIP, 8.5k
He has always known that Izuku Midoriya will undeniably become the best hero of their time. There was no amount of bullying he could ever inflict upon him to change that. But he never realized that this fate was strongly dependent on the existence of Katsuki Bakugou.
(In which Katsuki was born with a second, more subtle quirk.)
Honestly just a really interesting premise. I love the idea of secondary or subtle quirks and this is a neat execution of the idea. I like the interpretation of Bakugou in this, and I appreciate the focus on the friendships, not just the romance. I’m really enjoying this fic so far.
More Than One Hero by verymerrysioux
Bakugou & Midoriya, Bakugou & Kirishima, Bakugou & Shinsou, Midoriya & Kirishima, Midoriya & Shinsou, Kirishima & Shinsou, Friendship/Gen, Crossover/Fusion, Reincarnation AU, WIP, 31k
Bakugou Katsuki is an odd child, quiet and unassuming at first glance. One wouldn’t think he’d have the makings of a hero. The people who actually know him say otherwise.
His parents will say he collects a lot of odd things, likes to make too many unnecessary explosions (quirk or not), and can be so quiet that people won’t know he’s there. His childhood friend will say he’s a little weird, switches from polite speech to swears-a-lot at the drop of a hat, and has the habit of giving things away as much as he collects them. His classmates and teachers in U.A will say he’s too nosy for his own good, rummages through all the pots in the campus way too much, and is often unfazed by anything thrown his way. No matter how bizarre it may be.
Regardless, they all think he’ll be a great hero.
The most ridiculous, wonderful thing. This fic is hilarious and amazing and such a strange concept. But it works! Fun and interesting and wildly weird. There’s also some really well done serious moments. The entire fic feels very organic and well done. Poor All Might, though, he’s not prepared for any of this nonsense.
Slow to Start (But Quick to Burn) by mousapelli
Kirishima/Bakugou, A/b/o Dynamics, Complete, 29k
Bakugou is loud, abrasive, and way too strong to be a “good” omega, and he doesn’t give half a damn if that’s what everybody else thinks. The good news is that Kirishima is 100% into him just the way he is. The bad news is he might be 150% into Kirishima
I enjoy A/b/o and I really enjoy this sort of trope subversion. A really good build between Kirishima and Bakugou into a relationship. Not a bad integration of A/b/o into the Bnha universe, without just slapping Alpha/Omega labels on everyone and calling it good.
believe in me, believe in you by gold_rush
Bakugou & Todoroki, Bakugou & Midoriya, Friendship/Gen, Complete, 4.6k
Katsuki accidentally sees evidence of Todoroki’s abuse and he is FURIOUS.
Should probably be subtitled “Bakugou Katsuki wants to drop kick Endeavor in the face”. Has some of my favorite stuff in it, protective Bakugou and Parental Aizawa. Also, some really solid Bakugou and Midoriya interaction.
Put the Meat on My Bones by wonduhwoman
Bakugou/Midoriya/Uraraka, Bakugou & Shinsou, Bakugou & Kirishima, Bakugou & Todoroki, Aged Up Midoriya & Uraraka, WIP,  42k
“Dude,” Kirishima said, “How much did he tip you?”
Katsuki glanced down at his hand clutching the money, “Two-hundred bucks.”
Sero whistled low.
“What’s this?” Yaoyorozu asked, stealing the slip of paper off the bar before Katsuki could protest. She unfolded it, eyes widening, “He gave you his number, Bakugou! He even drew a winky face next to it!”
The consequences of Midoriya and Bakugou not growing up and going to UA together. Well executed AU, and some really great characterization all around. I love the friendships between Bakugou and Shinsou, but also the friendships between Bakugou and class 1A. Very solid writing, and just a very enjoyable fic so far.
Adventures with Bakugou by SatyrSyd37
Bakugou & Class 1A, Gen/Friendship, WIP, 21k
Class 1-A learns a lot from Bakugou, and Bakugou learns a lot from them.
‘Field trips with Zuko’ style adventures with Bakugou and each of the 1-A kiddos.
I just enjoy this concept immensely. Bakugou and 1A growing and learning together. Also, a little bit of exploration of some of the characters that don’t get as much screen-time in canon is always welcome.
Exception by saruma_aki
Bakugou-centric, Bakugou & Kirishima, Bakugou/Kirishima, Complete, 4.8k
Bakugou knew that certain things Kirishima would never personally agree with, just like the same applied for Bakugou in regards to Kirishima. But it was why they worked together so well.
Kirishima never hesitated to call Bakugou out on shit, and Bakugou always returned the favor. They engaged in their own personal sort of system of checks and balances, keeping each other in line, providing a unique sort of support.
They were each other’s best friend.
I really, really appreciate fics that deal with the fact that chaining up a fifteen year old in front of millions of people is a terrible idea and probably traumatizing. The fact that it was done by teachers that are supposed to be trusted authority figures is just… a thousand times worse. An excellent look at some of that.
the world you keep erasing by Slumber
Bakugou/Kirishima, Bakugou & Midoriya, Soulmate AU, Platonic Soulmates,  Complete, 4.2k
Katsuki doesn’t remember a world without color.
He fucking hates it.
The soulmate AU where you can’t see colors before you meet your soulmate. Nice trope subversion and platonic soulmate bits.
Valentine’s day chocolate is (not) overrated by Poteto
Bakugou/Kirishima, Bakusquad, Fluff, Complete, 5.2k
Bakugou thinks Valentine’s day is a bullshit holiday for bullshit people that spend money on useless sweets. However, if Kirishima wants chocolate that bad…
Super fluffy, super sweet, and super cute. Some really great Bakusquad interaction as well. I like the characterization of a slightly older Bakugou as well.
Damned Chat-Fic by ooopo123
Bakusquad OT5, Iida/Midoriya/Todoroki, Chat Fic, WIP, 12.8k
5cent Pikachu: Okay! Now that we’re all assembled!
Jacked Up: Tell this Pokemon kin that Mother Mother is better than Of Monsters and Men
5cent Pikachu: N O — A class 1-A chat-fic that’s mostly Baku-Squad centric! Featuring a polyamorous Baku-Squad and other LGBT characters!
Bakusquad OT5 with super sweet interactions between them. Some really, really good class 1A interactions as well. I enjoy the backstories for the different characters.
What Goes Around by AnglophilicSins
Bakugou & Class 1A, Bakugou-centric Ace Bakugou, WIP, 12k
Five times Bakugou Katsuki looked after his classmates and one time his classmates looked after him.
intertwined by crunchrapsupreme
Bakugou/Kirishima, NSFW, Complete, 6.4k
Kirishima asks Bakugou out in the beginning of April.
– (a study of kiribaku through the seasons)
Stray Bullet by AnonymousTwit
Bakugou & Midoriya, Bakugou & Kirishima, Bakugou & Class 1A, Bakugou-centric, Parental Aizawa, Parental All Might, Complete, 13k
Pushing through the crowd of students, the first thing he noticed was blood on the table. As he grew closer, he caught a small glimpse of Midoriya, his shoulders shaking so violently that they could cause an earthquake and eyes carrying so many emotions that it was absolutely dizzying.
Or
In which there’s a sniper attack at U.A. and Bakugou decides to do something selfless for once.
Bakugou is just a super-cool character and I love fics that focus on that. He has the potential to be a really great hero. Also, I just love him.
come and fly away with me by wonduhwoman
Bakugou/Uraraka, Bakugou & Kirishima, A/b/o dynamics, Complete, 3k
Katsuki is an omega and he doesn’t give a fuck.
Ochako is an alpha and all she wants is to get on his level.
He can respect that.
Part One of they say dreamers never die
can you see the fire in these eyes by wonduhwoman
Bakugou/Uraraka, Bakugou & Midoriya, Bakugou & Midoriya & Uraraka, A/b/o dynamics, Complete, 5.8k
Was it really so impossible for everyone to get along?
Yes. Yes it was.
But in the end, even Katsuki agreed that omegas should stick together.
Part Two of they say dreamers never die
laugh all the way to hell by wonduhwoman
Bakugou/Uraraka, Bakugou & Todoroki, Bakugou & Midoriya, Bakugou & Midoriya & Uraraka & Todoroki, Bakugou & Kirishima, Complete, 8k
Katsuki would never admit it to anyone, but being in a pack with Ochako and Deku was actually kind of…fun.
There was just one two-toned, socially inept problem.
Part Three of they say dreamers never die
A Fleeting Smile by AnonymousTwit
Bakusquad, Bakugou & Class 1A, Families of Choice, Friendship/Gen, WIP, 5.7k
Or a collection of fifteen Bakusquad drabbles where someone outside of the Bakusquad catches a rare glimpse of a friendlier side of Bakugou Katsuki, and one time that is specifically reserved for the four people that he hates the least.
I love this fic more and more each chapter.
Don’t want to lose, don’t want to cry, just want to keep laughing by darkinsanity13
Bakugou & Kaminari, Friendship/Gen, Fluff, Complete, 2.3k
Kaminari just wants to know what makes Bakugou laugh.
So cute, the cutest, I love it to bunches.
Like Crystals, They Reflect Light by AniPendragon
Bakugou/Kirishima, Bakugou & Midoriya, Bakugou & Ashido, Fluff, Friendship/Gen, Complete, 3.6k
With Christmas right around the corner, Bakugou wonders if now is the time to tell Kirishima how he feels. He’s never been good at dramatic timing, but everyone confesses during the holidays in the movies, so it should work, right?
He’s never been a coward, but fuck if this isn’t terrifying. You can’t exactly punch your feelings, after all.
Just, I adore this fic so much. The Midoriya and Bakugou interactions in this are utterly and completely perfect. The Bakugou and Ashido friendship is sweet as all get out. And Bakugou and Kirishima are adorable.

New Pokemon Snap Successfully Modernizes the Classic N64 Formula
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
New Pokémon Snap takes one of the oldest, most bizarre, yet surprisingly brilliant offshoots of the Pokémon franchise and updates it for the current generation, 22 years after the launch of the original game back in 1999 on the N64. It’s a polished update to the original formula that deepens and expands the experience in many ways while preserving the core idea that made the first game so brilliant in the first place. Developers Bandai Namco did a fantastic job here, and for fans of the original like me, it’s a treat to head back out into the wild, camera in hand.
The key to both the original and New Pokémon Snap’s success is the on-rails gameplay, which ironically opens up a litany of creative avenues for the developers to riff on. You sit in a roving pod called the Neo One, which pilots you down a (mostly) predetermined route through a lush environment while you try to take aesthetically pleasing photographs of Pokémon in their natural habitat.
Photos are scored at the end of each expedition by several criteria, including how centered the Pokémon is in the frame, how large they are in the frame, the direction they’re facing, etc. Racking up big scores gives you points toward the “research level” of that specific environment, which gives you a reason to return to areas you’ve already played. Every time an environment’s research level increases, the expedition changes in different ways, with the Pokémon’s behaviors, positioning, and movement paths changing, giving you new opportunities for better photos.
As you do more research across the Lental region’s different biomes, you’ll receive new items to use in the field to draw out Pokémon and elicit reactions. Fluffruit can be thrown to get a Pokémon’s attention and capture photos of them enjoying a tasty snack. There’s the scanner, which analyzes anomalies and uncovers alternate roots, and also has the bonus effect of attracting the attention of certain Pokémon when activated. And then there are Illumina Balls, which cause Pokémon to glow and can change their behavior on occasion, and a little song you can play, which wakes sleeping Pokémon and causes others to dance.
The main objective of the game is to fill up your Photodex—each Pokémon has four star-ranked poses to capture, and it’s challenging to figure out how to elicit all four poses from each species. It becomes a bit of a puzzle game of sorts as you try to capture your perfect Pokémon pics. Because your movement is restricted, you’re forced to bring the Pokémon in close and influence their behavior by using a variety of items and tools. Being that the Neo One moves ever forward, you’ve only got a few moments to make your moves and position the Pokémon where you need them to be for your snaps.
Watching the Pokémon move around the environments, interact with each other, and essentially do what they do in their natural environments is incredibly entertaining to watch, particularly on your first few runs through a level. Whether it’s two Charmander chatting with each other across a magma river, a family of Onix catching some Z’s under the night sky, or a Magikarp awkwardly flailing in the air, lunging at a thrown Fluffruit, the animations and scripted scenarios look fantastic.
The artists and engineers at Bandai Namco nail the presentation, and all of the levels are absolutely teeming with life, which adds to the sense of immersion. Cruising through the reefs and beaches of the oceanic levels is wonderfully serene, and the roiling lava streams and rising embers of the volcanic areas are a sight to behold. The environments can stale a bit on multiple playthroughs, but there are day and night variations of most levels, and raising the research levels adds variety as well.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Overall, the game looks pretty slick, with relatively well-detailed character models and environments that pop with color and personality. The game would’ve likely benefited from a more robust lighting system (there are some environments, like the misty forests, that would look absolutely spectacular with more atmospheric and dynamic effects), but the visuals are eye-catching all the same. Some of the larger Pokémon are downright majestic to behold when you get up close, and to that point, the sense of scale is something that the mainline games are sorely missing.
The sound design is solid, too—you can hear Pokémon outside of your field of vision, which comes in handy if you’re an active listener. It’s still a wonder why a company as profitable as Nintendo can’t afford to provide full voice acting in a game like this, which isn’t exactly brimming with dialogue in the first place. But still, the human characters at the lab provide a nice break from all the cacophony of Pokémon sounds you’ll hear on your excursions.
The story is thin but cute and totally appropriate: You’re a research assistant for Dr. Mirror in the Lental region, where you’re gathering photographic data on not just different Pokémon species, but a phenomena called “illumina,” which involves mysterious flowers that cause Pokémon to glow and alters their behavior. If nothing else, the human cast of characters’ excitement toward the Pokémon and your pictures adds to the fun and reminds you how cool it is to see the cute critters and towering beasts so close-up.
For fans of the franchise, New Pokémon Snap should be a delight to play, if for no other reason than it’s a ton of fun to see the Pokémon up close and personal, interacting with each other in adorable, hilarious ways. But there are also achievements to collect, the Photodex to fill in and read, and a photo album that you can customize and share with others online. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the game’s community thrive for a very, very long time.
There’s really no other game quite like New Pokémon Snap. It’s a nature-photography arcade game whose gameplay feels pure and simple and yet is wholly unique at the same time. There’s maybe no better way to immerse yourself in the wild world of Pokémon—the lovable creatures have never looked so good. And the game is damn fun to play, to boot. In fact, when you take the battling and stats of the main games out of the equation, the true beauty of Pokémon shines through—these characters are cute as hell, and all we want to do is admire how gloriously awesome they are.

How do you think Alan and Sycamore spent their first Halloween (or whatever the pokemon equivalent would be) together?
Hmm, well, that first requires figuring out what the PokéWorld equivalent of Halloween is—and in this case, the Kalosean equivalent specifically.
I have a very strong fondness for Halloween (as in, it’s the only holiday I actually enjoy), so I like to think that all regions celebrate it in some form or another. However, the regions are all pretty culturally distinct from one another; even in the case of Kanto and Johto and their joint League due to their history (i.e. Johto as we know it is still a pretty young region that only recently gained sovereignty in the grand scheme of things), culturally Kanto and Johto still have many distinctions between them, which is a huge part of what drove Johto to fight for its own autonomy to begin with. Therefore, while there may be some holidays that regions around the world share (such as how many countries in our world celebrate Christmas in its commercialized form), I feel that not only would there be many holidays that would differ or would be region specific, but that even if there are some holidays that are shared, the lore behind them might shift and change even if the traditions practiced during the holidays remain the same.
So with that said, as far as Kalos’ version of Halloween goes …
In Kalos, the holiday is more than likely called La Veille de la Cercle. According to Google Translate (and apologies to any native speakers if both Google Translate and I horribly bungled this), this translates to “The Eve of the Hoop / Circle / Ring”. In this case, the hoop / circle / ring referred to in the name is one of Hoopa’s rings, and the lore behind the holiday is …
Tales and legends throughout Kalos’ history speak of Hoopa, a legendary pokémon that spread mischief and mayhem wherever it went. Stories about Hoopa vary greatly; in some tales Hoopa is merely mischievous, if it a bit greedy, and doesn’t harm those which it transports through its massive rings. In others, Hoopa is more malicious, actively transporting people and pokémon and who knows what else through its rings to Hell dimensions, where they’re never heard from again. Over time, these stories began to be split between Hoopa’s Bound form and its Unbound form, but regardless, Hoopa is still a legendary pokémon that, in all stories, is better avoided than crossed. Even if Hoopa doesn’t transport you right then, if it takes a liking to you, it could transport you later, the stories say. It’s better to safe than sorry.
With that said, many, many, many years ago (like, potentially thousands of years ago), there spawned a belief that while Hoopa was wild and unpredictable for most of the year, there was a brief spell near the end of the autumn that Hoopa would be more active. The reason, ancient Kaloseans believed, had to do with the changing seasons; in winter the land becomes sparse and barren, and people retreat indoors in order to keep warm and outlast the frigid months. Many people and pokémon are affected by the barren state of the world when winter came calling, but for Hoopa—a pokémon known for its selfish hoarding tendencies—those months are unbearable. Therefore, it was reasoned, Hoopa would make a last ditch effort to stockpile a collection in its dimensional world to last it through the winter months. For a period near the end of autumn and beginning of winter, Hoopa would snatch up any vulnerable people and pokémon and transport them through its rings, never to be seen again. Therefore, it was imperative that everyone take necessary precautions in order to ensure that they would not be one of Hoopa’s victims.
Now, in the past, there were numerous traditions practiced that have fallen by the wayside in modern times. In ancient times, for instance, it wasn’t unheard of for sacrifices to be made to Hoopa, with the thought being that if a town or village offered up someone for Hoopa to take, then Hoopa would leave the rest of them alone for another year. These sacrifices were usually tied up out in the woods nearby (or out in the plains nearby, whichever), and while they were never heard from again, it’s highly unlikely Hoopa actually took them. More like, pokémon who were offered up as sacrifices probably freed themselves and fled, and humans either did the same, or were, uh … attacked and possibly eaten by wild pokémon. So they were probably still sacrificed, in a sense, but it just … didn’t do anything to actually appease Hoopa. Oops.
Sacrifices in ancient Kalosean history aside, it’s also possible that other offerings were made. Food, candy, shiny trinkets … Hoopa is a selfish hoarder, after all. Living sacrifices weren’t necessarily necessary. Some Kaloseans made very intricate, detailed dolls (both human and pokémon) to offer up to Hoopa, thinking that Hoopa could be contented by cuddling with nice dolls and plushies instead.
There were decorations strewn up and about as well, both around individual homes and in settlements. Certain flowers could be woven together in wreathes shaped like protective crests or sigils to be hung on doors. Special incense was continuously burned around the clock in homes in order to ward off Hoopa, as well as thrown into communal bonfires. And those are just the decorations for the scenery; it also became tradition to dress up in special clothes every year, in order to protect oneself (and one’s children and pokémon) from Hoopa’s capture as well. Many years ago, special cloaks with protective crests sewn into them were worn. Over time, particularly since those special cloaks weren’t always available to everyone, this shifted to less “you need cloaks made of this certain (and expensive) material with this specific crest on them” and became more “you need to disguise yourself so that Hoopa does not recognize you / will be repelled by your appearance and not want to take you.” Therefore, frightening and ghastly costumes were woven into the tradition and became popularized, although as the years went on the requirement for the costumes to be scary waned (at least with some, because there are people who do still prefer frightening and spooky costumes).
Now, as mentioned, years and years and years ago, La Veille de la Cercle spanned several days. As time went on, however, the reported range of Hoopa’s activities dwindled down to a single night. There are some parts of history and lore that try to explain this, but what it really boils down to is the fact that as society modernized, responsibilities to professional positions grew, and as such practicing La Veille de la Cercle for multiple nights in a row became too time-consuming and inconvenient to maintain. Regardless, it is still practiced for one night per year in Kalos (October 31st), and it’s still quite a lot of fun. In the modern era, traditions include:
Dressing up in costume, which is an activity for adults and children
Trick-or-treating, but with a bit of a twist from how we know it. In Kalos, the lore shifted over time so that children (and adolescent chaperones) would go door to door in order to trick or treat. The objective, however, was not to gain candy for themselves, but rather to gain candy as offerings for Hoopa, so that the people and pokémon of the household would not be transported by Hoopa’s rings in the dead of night. Furthermore, it’s not that the trick-or-treaters say “trick or treat!” and then get one or the other. Rather, while costumed, the trick-or-treaters must try to trick the person who opens the door into giving them the candy. If successful, they get the candy and move on to the next house. If not, they are “banished” and must gathering their offerings elsewhere. (Note that in the modern day, most adults pretend the children successfully tricked them even if they didn’t, because come on, they’re kids. Also, obviously Hoopa doesn’t take the candy, so the kids always get to keep it and most know that this is how it’s going to go, but again, it’s part of the fun of the holiday.)
Some villages / towns / cities still have communal bonfires on the night of. Many also still put up decorations throughout the month of October in preparation of the night of.
Costume parties! Themed baked goods! Special deals on grooming and the like for certain species of pokémon (such as pumpkaboo)! Things like that.
So with all of that figured out, as for how Augustine and Alan would celebrate their very first one together …
Well, first things first: Augustine would have only had Alan for about a month at this point. Genesis takes place at the very end of September, about five days after Augustine’s 25th birthday, meaning that Alan and Augustine would have literally known each other for a month and a day by the time La Veille de la Cercle rolls around. Augustine would be pretty excited; he was never one who cared overmuch for holidays, but he always still appreciated La Veille de la Cercle a little more than others because of a few factors (namely the fact that pokémon such as pumpkaboo were more prone to wandering into cities so they could be pampered, and because of all the discount candy and La Veille de la Cercle pastries the day after). Additionally, he would feel that it’s important to teach Alan about various holidays and traditions, and as such, unofficially adopting Alan ends up making Augustine pay more attention to holiday traditions as well. It gets him more into the holiday spirit, because he wants to make sure Alan has that kind of childhood.
Alan, however … wouldn’t be excited. Unlike Festival de la Vie, where it was a thing he knew happened but he never really participated in, La Veille de la Cercle was always unpleasant for him back in Isolé Village. It is, after all, a holiday themed around spooky things, and mischief, and potential misfortune; creatures, or things, or people that are seen as ill omens or tokens of bad luck are often mistreated at that time of year. (So like, pumpkaboo may love La Veille de la Cercle, but absol often receive the short end of the stick from crueller Kaloseans during this time of year, because they’re seen as omens of disaster and misfortune.) For the first four years of his life (because remember, by the time the fifth one comes around, he’s out of that village), this was Alan’s experience. No one there liked him anyway, but the basis for a lot of the dislike was that he was seen as a nuisance and burden at best. In the eyes of some (like Maurice), he was even speculated to be a changeling that they were burdened or cursed with. These rumors and speculations always tended to increase around the time of La Veille de la Cercle, both when it came to the adults who were already prone to believing it, as well as when it came to the other village children who already liked to bully him throughout the rest of the year, but ramped it up around La Veille de la Cercle time because they were more in the mood for it. So for Alan, La Veille de la Cercle last year was the night when Maurice “accidentally” locked him out of the house for the night, and then Alan overheard him talking to his wife the next morning after claiming it as an accident, saying, “too bad; I was hoping Hoopa might take him back to wherever he came from.” For Alan, La Veille de la Cercle was the time of year when the village kids (some around his age, but some older) would always tie him up somewhere as a sacrifice like in the old stories, usually multiple times throughout October. (He’s pretty good at getting out of being tied up by now, especially if what’s being used to tie him is a jump rope or otherwise old rope.) It’s not a time of candy or dressing up in fun costumes; it’s just a time when everything gets worse, and he honestly wishes that maybe Hoopa would come get him because, hey, maybe living with Hoopa would be more fun than living here.
Obviously his situation changes once Augustine takes him in, but even so, he has 0% excitement as the days creep closer to La Veille de la Cercle, even as Augustine tries to get him excited about the pumpkaboo flying through Lumiose, or the themed pastries, or decorations, or anything else. And Augustine can’t really understand it. All kids love La Veille de la Cercle! It’s a fun holiday with traditions just for kids built in! What’s not to love? He tries asking Alan various questions about it (e.g. “Do you not like orange? Do you not like pumpkin flavored things?”), but Alan (as could be expected) is cagey and doesn’t want to say. What if he says, and the Professor thinks he’s just being a baby? What if he says, and the Professor agrees that, yeah, he probably was a changeling brought in by Hoopa in the first place? The Professor is so nice, so Alan doesn’t think he’d say things like that, but … well, Alan doesn’t want to create an opportunity.
Nonetheless, Augustine is determined to make this all very fun for Alan, especially when it comes to trick-or-treating. He spends the entire month of October planning out costumes (at one point he pitched the idea of a Kangaskhan costume for himself, and a baby Kangaskhan costume for Alan, but Fulbert shut that down before Augustine even finished his sentence like, “First, that’s so disgustingly saccharine I might throw up, and second, you’re not his dad, we’re still looking for his birth parents, be careful about screwing with his head like that” so, that ended). Eventually he settles on werewolf costumes for the both of them, with his werewolf costume being based on lycanroc, and Alan’s based on rockruff (and though Fulbert opens his mouth to object, Augustine cuts him off with, “This isn’t specifically a parent and child cosplay, so it won’t send any mixed messages, so you don’t have any right to complain”). Augustine’s on something of a budget, so there aren’t any masks or anything; it’s mostly just wolf ears, claws, tails, et cetera. You know, that sort of thing. Werewolf. (And still very cute, no doubt. You know how Augustine is about wanting to get Alan the cutest everything. Cutest damn little werewolf pup you ever did see.)
Anyway, Alan’s still not super enthused, though he is a bit surprised when Augustine presents him with a costume and says they’re going trick-or-treating. Alan hasn’t expressed knowledge of how trick-or-treating works (and really, he only has a vague idea—it’s not something he’s ever done before), so Augustine explains it before he takes him out …
… and yet, when they get to the first house, instead of trying to trick the person who opens the door, Alan just … holds out his pillowcase and sort of half-mumbles something about needing candy. It makes the situation a bit awkward, and Augustine laughs and explains that Alan is shy, and the person at the door takes pity and gives him candy anyway, and then they’re allowed to move on.
But before they go to the next house, Augustine pulls Alan aside and asks him, “Hey, are you all right? I’m sorry, it slipped my mind that you might not be comfortable talking to strangers just yet …”
And Alan shrugs, because that’s only part of the issue, but then he mumbles, “It’s mean.”
Augustine blinks. “Pardon?”
“Tricking people is mean.” Alan isn’t looking at Augustine; he’s looking at the ground instead. “Tricking people makes them feel bad. And you have to lie to trick people, and lying is bad, too. I don’t want to upset anyone, and I don’t want to do anything bad.”
“Oh …” Augustine smiles faintly. “Well, yes, what you said is usually true. Usually lying is bad, and sometimes tricking others can be mean. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. There are some tricks that are harmless, and sometimes little white lies are okay.”
Alan looks at him askance. “What do you mean?”
“Well …” Augustine taps his finger against his chin. “Sometimes my mother likes to experiment with new recipes, and sometimes they don’t always turn out the greatest. However, I usually tell her that they taste all right, but could use mild improvement, to spare her feelings. Or sometimes I tell Fulbert that he is as young and spritely as ever, even though you and I both know he is a grumpy old man, to make him feel better about himself. It’s a lie, but it’s a lie to spare his feelings, so it’s all right.”
“Oh.” Alan blinks. “So … you can lie to help people?”
“Sometimes, depending on the situation,” Augustine says. “And in this case, tricking people as we go from house to house is all right, because they’re expecting it. They want to be tricked. It’s a … it’s a game we’re playing with them.”
“Really?”
“Really.” Augustine smiles, and puts his hands on Alan’s shoulders. “So, do you want to keep going? You don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. You could trick them by … jumping out from behind me, perhaps?”
Alan considers this for a moment, before he suggests, “If they want to be tricked, and they’re expecting to be tricked, won’t it be a bigger trick to just ask them for the candy?”
Augustine stares at him a moment, caught off guard, but then starts laughing. “I suppose,” he says, “that being faced with a polite young werewolf would be a bit unexpected. All right, Alan; let’s see if this works.”

Why I love EGS so fucking much
I first checked out El Goonish Shive many years ago. If memory serves, this was in the early 2010s. I don’t recall reading much that didn’t feel like wish fulfillment and it didn’t draw me in so I left it. More recently, a friend of mine who I got into killsixbilliondemons (one of the best webcomics around today) and who reintroduced me to the Mistborn series recommended it to me. I vaguely remembered a few aspects but had no real memory.
EGS is a bit of a mess, really. This is because in its earliest days (2002, amazingly) it was poorly drawn, over-the-top silly, and more than a little problematic at times. Characters were not so tightly defined and there was a lot of nonsense. There was a magic gun that would transform people (mostly gender and furry stuff) but it was... kind of bleh? It’s hard to say. The author has admitted that at that time he was worried about reactions to any sort of trans-related theme so he overcompensated with the character’s reactions to Tedd’s... thing.
By the first real arc, Sister, things were starting to come together. I don’t really want to get into details, but that arc, while flawed, led to some amazing stuff down the road. It was also the first serious plot, which gave it more weight than a comic that was mostly random nonsense.
A bit later the Painted Black arc came and that was rather good. Still far from perfect, but Dan’s art style was drastically improving and Grace’s backstory was explained. It was also a lot darker than previous storylines. Don’t get me wrong - darkness is fun as hell but sometimes there’s too much and I think later EGS managed to set a balance between sadness and good cheer.
I don’t want to detail every story arc by any means but I feel like those two were important milestones for the comic. They helped me actually get into it.
As the story is today (obviously there are spoilers so, you know, don’t read if you're worried about that), there are a lot of fascinating characters, many of whom are queer. Actually, I’m pretty sure most of the main cast is some level of queer (the only one who I’m not sure of is Susan, but she has other issues that are treated well). Magic is abundant but surprisingly logical in that it is explained in a manner that is consistent and its rules generally don’t bend or break.
The basics of it in that world are as follows:
* Normal people can’t do magic, but they can acquire it through the intervention of magic immortal beings (who usually only give them marks in very specific scenarios or when they want to get something done as they can’t affect the world directly)
* People generally acquire magic in the form of a mark, which gives them access to one spell. Through practice (and often an intense event, emotional or otherwise), they can awaken and start acquiring new spells (chosen by magic, which has a will of sorts)
* Uryuoms have transformational powers and physical abilities that are like magic but internal in such a way that they have resistance/immunity to a lot of magic
Note: Uryuom aren’t aliens but are aliens and I’m still not really sure about where they came from. They featured heavily in some earlier stories (especially Painted Black) but haven’t shown much other than as background characters since then.
It’s worth describing the main cast and also some auxiliary queer characters of interest.
Note: in EGS, the word ‘transgender’ was used a lot with regards to transformation spells/technology, but trans characters in the standard sense of the word do exist. When I say “turned into” I’m referring to magic that physically changes their bodies, not their identities (which are separate).
Trans and/or gender non-conforming (identity is weird, don’t want to paste the label of trans onto certain characters):
Tedd Verres - arguably the main main character, although there are many arcs where they don’t show up much. One of the original two characters. Half-Japanese and born with some rather unique magical potential (and lack thereof), AMAB. Tedd has always been androgynous but would get extremely defensive if anyone referred to them as female. They learn about genderfluidity from Grace in a glorious moment. As the story currently is they are working out who they are, and since magic is going to change they’re dealing with the emotional ramifications of whether they’d rather be stuck as a boy or a girl in the likely event that magic changes.
Elliot Dunkel - the other first character in the strip along with Tedd. He starts out rough when it comes to gender stuff (see last panel here, first panel is flashback in following strip) but ends up zapped by a transformation gun and turned into a girl. Eventually he dispels it with a crystal but that creates a double under the ‘curse’ (Ellen, cis) and gives them both powers. Elliot’s is the ability to transform into a girl (and shapeshift under those parameters). He’s at first frustrated by the fact that he HAS to (because of the circumstances of his acquiring said powers he is forced to use up excess magic energy or else he’ll unintentionally transform at random times, something that would be rather inconvenient), but later on he realizes that he’s never really cared about being a boy or a girl and he was just dealing with societal baggage. Oh, and he develops the power to transform into a female superhero. It’s great. Realizing that he actually likes who he is and that being fluid is a part of who he is (all glorious moments of character development). Seriously, he went on a date with his girlfriend as a girl and it was so fucking cute and they are adorable together and just wow it was so cute. Elliot’s agender but also somewhat genderfluid. Also, mostly into girls but definitely enjoys men as well.
Yes, both of the main characters (initially ‘boys’) later on realized that they were a variety of genderfluid.
Grace: Grace is part alien? (Uryuom insist that they are not aliens but their origins are still unclear), part human, part squirrel (Uryuom eggs can have DNA from up to twelve sources, to my memory). She’s a person of color who is a natural shapeshifter. I don’t recall where it is clarified but she doesn’t really have a sense of any sort of gender as she’s always been a shapeshifter and that’s just natural to her. Basically agender. Also, has discussed how human bodies shouldn’t be limited to characteristics of one gender, has explicitly discussed the lack of binariness to gender and sex and is just generally super wonderful.
There’s also one or two side characters who are trans and don’t have access to any sort of transformation powers.
Most relevant is Sam, a fan of an in-universe analogue of magic the gathering who is a closeted transguy (only is himself at tournaments). Also, an overdramatic doofus who is like one of those pokemon trainers who go on about wearing shorts because of how much easier it makes to run around. He is wonderful. He has a date (or a not-date because people are awkward) with one of the main cast members (Sarah) and as such is likely to become a recurring character.
It’s worth pointing out that of course EGS isn’t totally unproblematic (but what is, really?) and that in a world with magic transformation things can get a little weird but it’s definitely well done by more recent years. The stuff this year especially is just fantastic. Seeing characters break past socialization and realizing that they aren’t what they thought they were is fantastic.
Also, most of the other cast is some variety of non-straight:
Sarah (third character to be introduced) is bi (more into guys but definitely into girls too).
Nanase (Japanese) is a lesbian.
Ellen (Elliot’s female duplicated created by a cursed artifact) is a homoromantic bisexual (and dating Nanase).
Justin is super gay.
Also, a bunch of recurring side characters (or side characters who are definitely going to come back because of going on a gay date with one of the main cast members) are queer - Rhoda (bi or lesbian, person of color), Catalina (lesbian), Luke (gay, ethnically ambiguous), Ashley (Elliot’s new girlfriend, bi, east asian).
Lots and lots of gayness.
Apologies for general weirdness of the post. I’ve been dealing with a lot of mental health problems lately but I want to tell the world that EGS is one of my favorite webcomics and that whatever problems it has in its earlier years it more than makes up for. Give it a try if it sounds interesting.
Also, there are anime-style martial arts, founded by a man who mastered a few martial arts and watched way too much anime to the point of obsession and it actually works.
Dan Shive (the author) hasn’t explicitly stated his own identity but doesn’t really have a gender.
EGS tumblr - @egscomics
Also, reading the comic helped me realize that I’m genderfluid (not in a male-female sense but more of a female - nothing - weird stuff sense).
It’s good.

I’ve reviewed all the movies...why not review the hour-long specials too? And why not start with the 10th anniversary in the lead-up to the 20th?
I was actually advised against watching this. Not one person I’ve come across has said that it was good. But I’m a sucker for the Mew Duo, and this is Misty’s last major appearance to date. With those two things going for it, it can’t be that bad, right? Right?
...Right?
Let’s get this out of the way first - 4Kids didn’t exactly start their dub as a breathtaking example of quality voice acting. It took a while for them to find their groove. This being the first thing that the TCPi cast ever did, there’s a limit to how harshly one can judge them when you divorce the performances themselves from the fact that an anniversary special commissioned for the American audience is a poor choice in venue for testing out a new cast brought in to make things cheaper. And they did eventually re-dub the thing for DVD, an acknowledgement of their initial mistakes.
I’d be curious to see the re-dub some day; the copy I had to watch was the original. And, cutting them some slack for being first-timers...it’s bad. Anyone who’s ever tried to watch a Godzilla film with the international dubs Toho prepares in Hong Kong will have seen worse dubbing, but this is still bad. The fact that TCPi’s improvements over the years have been marginal at best is also a limit on the slack I’m willing to cut them. Professor Oak’s is probably the worst voice here, emotionally flat and often sliding more into Gary territory. I’m not surprised Jamie Peacock was replaced as Ash, either. Her voice might bear more resemblance to Veronica Taylor’s Ash than what Sarah Natochenny eventually did, but there’s no energy to the performance. Whether Bill Rogers improved as Brock over the years or not is an open question; he was never that good IMO. And Misty’s voice is weak, and probably the most frustrating. Michele Knotz has done a fair Jessie over the years, and her stab at Misty comes very close to Rachel Lillis in timbre, but without any of the temper, teasing, sweetness, or life that Lillis brought to the character. Like Professor Oak’s, it’s a flat performance emotionally.
Another technical problem with this special is the animation. I cannot for the life of me figure out why an anniversary special seems to have been given such a low budget. The Mirage Kingdom episodes of AG (to name just one example) had much higher quality than this. I would critique this animation if it popped up in a regular episode; in a special like this, it feels like a cheat. The bright backgrounds and almost pastel color palette also undermine any sense of threat or menace that Yung might have possessed.
The pacing is off as well. If the pokefilms after a certain point lost a truly cinematic feel (for the most part), they did at least try to present their material with a bit more flair and scope than the average episode. Hell, certain episodes try to have a bit more flair and scope than the rest. The way the story is laid out here is so...mundane. Nothing is given any sort of weight; the threat posed by Yung isn’t treated any more seriously than something a CotD or even the TRio would pull. The story itself has the glaring flaw that there’s no good reason for Yung to have invited anyone except Professor Oak to his castle. There isn’t anything in the way of a plot or an arc for Ash or anyone else; they’re basically there to witness what Yung is up to, and they don’t even stop him. Several of the films have the same problem, but not to this degree IMO, and this special doesn’t even have a CotD as a de facto protagonist. Not unless you count the Mirage Mew, which...give ‘em a point for originality, I guess.
And the character work is irritatingly lame. Misty’s guest appearances throughout AG all made more out of her initial reveal and the group’s reaction to her. Things never went overboard in that regard, but all those moments were treated as special events. In this special, her turning up is just tossed aside. Seeing her alongside Ash and May is fun, but it doesn’t amount to anything thanks to the virtual non-existence of a role for any of them in the plot. The unique dynamic between Misty and Ash, or Misty and Brock, or Max and Brock, or Ash and Professor Oak - the well-established and entertaining dynamics between any two characters - aren’t made use of, and Max and Brock individually aren’t made use of at all.
And then...there’s that one bit...
So, remember how, back in the early Kanto days where Ash and Misty were just barely friends, we had “Here Comes the Squirtle Squad,” where Pikachu is sick and the Squirtles threaten to dye Misty’s hair (or kill her, if you go by the Japanese version), and Ash is super concerned for both of them, and urges Jenny to get him back to the cave faster because he’s worried about Misty, and when he reaches the cave he imagines her screaming and falling and gets all frightened? Remember that?
Fast forward hundreds of episodes, eight movies, an hour-long special, a couple of Chronicles adventures, and lots of character development that saw Ash and Misty become best friends, with the latter definitely crushing on the former and the former possibly subconsciously doing the same. Given all that, what is Ash’s reaction to Misty falling to her apparent death?
“Misty! Oh, wait, they’re taking Pikachu away. Pikachu! Oh, wait, there’s a not-Mew I need to talk to. Good luck, guys!”
Bullshit.
I might give that moment more of a pass in other circumstances; the TRio have taken falls and been blasted off in ways that would result in certain death in a literal reality countless times. Those falls are played as cartoon comedy, and had Misty taken a plunge from a great height in that kind of a situation, I wouldn’t be so bothered that Ash didn’t have more of a reaction. But this is meant to be a dramatic moment. The possibility that Misty could be in real danger at the least is (nominally) present. Why does Ash have such a muted response?
This special isn’t even the only instance of this problem. Such a lack of emotion regarding human jeopardy has become a chronic flaw of this anime, and it’s maddening to me that the staff doesn’t seem to regard the bonds between people and their human loved ones as being of equal importance for the characters - and the audience - as the bonds between people and their Pokemon.
All of that said, is there anything good about Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon? Well, Professor Oak having a sweet-ass Dragonite was cool. And the basic concept of an evil scientist creating Mirage Pokemon wasn’t bad. It could easily have made a movie, and perhaps it should’ve. Executed with better animation and more emotion and scale to the storytelling, this could’ve been an excellent pokefilm, much better than Temple of the Sea IMO (which I assume it would’ve replaced). It’s just such a shame that almost everything was done wrong in the execution of this idea, and in an anniversary celebration no less. Alas, it seems TPC has made the same sort of mistake (in different aspects of production) on their next anniversary...
So...yeah. Like I said, I watched this against advice. I can only hope the next person in line takes my advice, skips this special, and reads @theroadyouchoose‘s re-write of it instead. It skews darker than the show would go, you’ll feel compelled to read the rest of her series, and you’ll spend the rest of your life thinking that the BW theme is literally titled “The Road You Choose” and was written specifically for her fics, but it’s worth it.

5 Things Thing
Tagged by the one and only @five-foot-a-b1tch! (I’m stealing your number symbols, they look fancy.)
5 things I keep in my bag ① Laptop: Windows 10 Acer laptop in prime breaking down condition! This thing is a few years old. I hope it lasts until I get a new one, lol. I’m a bit attached to it, though... I have fond memories of me playing games in class when I’m supposed to be working. (I’m a high school student, okay? It’s what we all do.) ② 3DS XL: Okay, not ALL the time, but... I do bring it a lot. I take my Pokemon very seriously. All I need to do to have caught ‘em all is to finish the Alolan Dex and then gotten a Diancie. One day, I’ll be a real Pokemon master... ③  Sketchbook: I try not to think about the fact that it has my sister’s ex boyfriend’s name on it. I’m pretty sure it was his when he was in year 9 art, but... he left it here, so yoink. ④ Books: Lots of books. My bag is heavy... ⑤ Laptop charger: The battery on my laptop is warped, so the charger is like a lifeline for it. Well, it has crappy battery life, basically.
5 things I keep in my room ① Birb statues: My dad bought them for me. One of them is a macaw that’s drilled into my wall. The other is a bald eagle that’s sat on my shelf... my bird sits on the eagle, sometimes. He has no fear. ② Plush animals: Most of them are different types of birds... I have an elephant, cheetah and Fennekin one as well though. I also have a really old robotic cat toy, which has been out of battery since forever. It’s furry, though... and again, my bird likes to sit on it. I’m still a kid, so I have a bald eagle plush that I still sleep with. I love bald eagles, y’know? They’re my favourite animal. ③ Assassin’s Creed Special Edition boxes: More specifically, the Notre Dame edition of Unity and the Buccaneer edition of Black Flag. I used to be obsessed with Assassin’s Creed, but now my love for it is more nostalgia for how much I used to enjoy it. I still stand by my opinion that Connor’s the best character, though. ④ Merchandise: Of the Attack on Titan and Undertale variety. I have a Survey Corps uniform, and though... poorly made, I still very much so enjoy it, because I’m a freakin’ nerd. The Undertale merch I got a few days ago from Fangamer. It came with two shirts, one of which is too big for me, but that’s not gonna stop me from wearing it. ⑤ Feather box: I collect feathers. Most of the feathers I have in there are from my bird, since he’s... usually the bird at closest proximity to me in most hours of the day.
5 things I’ve always wanted to do with my life (oh god) ① Concept Art: Getting the obvious stuff out of the way. I enjoy digital painting moreso than doing lined art. It’s just fun to work with colours and lighting and shapes more freely. ② Animate: Probably not gonna happen... especially compared to my art skills, my animation skills are subpar (I know because I tried, I have a YouTube channel with crappy WMM animations in it), and I’m not patient enough to spend days upon days animating a 5-minute video. I have immense respect for animators. Not to mention, every good animation program costs like $500??? What the hell???? ③ YouTube personality: Again, probably never gonna happen, but I want to feel important to a wide range of people. ④ Make a game: It’s not just Undertale that makes me like Toby... Everything he says and does inspires me in some way. He’s my biggest role model at the moment, and I’ve had an idea for an original story for quite a bit. What made me sure that I wanted to do this eventually was a quote he had on his (inactive) Tumblr, when Undertale had its first Birthday. ⑤ Cosplay: Yes. 5 things I’m into  ① Attack on Titan: AoT AoT AoT AoT AoT (it’s always been my most favourite thing ever. I have a place in my heart specially dedicated to it.) ② Undertale: Coming second only to Attack on Titan. I love this game so, so much. I joined the fandom a little late but was immediately charmed by the game the moment I met Flowey. It didn’t take me long to start obsessing over it... by the time I stepped out of the Ruins, I already lost myself to this world. Look at me now. Haha. Ha. ③ osu!: osu! is an Australian-made rhythm game where you click the circles... to the beat. (No, it’s not Japanese, like I initially thought it was. It was actually made by some guy in Perth.) I’ve only been playing for about 9 months and I’m ranked 46k globally out of over 9 million players. Something about seeing you grow out your skill in such a short amount of time is so rewarding. It’s great for improving stamina in my arms (which I’ve always had trouble with, thanks to a certain disability that I was born with) and perhaps the greatest thing about this game is the culture surrounding it. There’s kind of a poetic balance between beauty and elegance, intenseness and frustration, and just... utter weirdness. I love it. ④ Touhou Project: I only recently got into it, but boy, did I get sucked into it. It’s just so damn difficult that it’s impossible not to play it over and over. And, I’ve watched Memories of Phantasm, the fanmade anime... the only good thing about it is the animation quality. And that’s not just me complaining like a hipster... it actually sucks so badly it’s funny. My favourite character is Cirno, in case anyone’s curious. ⑤ Warriors: The one and only book series that I actively follow. The writing’s horrendous in some books, but I love the ideas in it anyway. Plus, Jayfeather is to live for. My favourite book would be either Bluestar’s Prophecy, which was the first book I’ve ever read, Tallstar’s Revenge, which made me shed a manly tear at the end, or Path of Stars, which ACTUALLY made me cry, because that death scene was so emotional. I loved Gray Wing, man...
5 things on my to-do list ① Improve my art: ok. ② Get on top of my schedule: I swear I love my comics... ③ Catch ‘em all: You don’t get it... I take my Pokemon VERY seriously. ④ Actually beat Touhou 6: IT’S. HARD. ⑤ Become a 4-digit player on osu!: Because the community gives 5-digit players like me enough smack for being mediocre... 5 things you may not know about me ① Well, I guess you know NOW, but I was born with a disability. Low muscle tone, AKA Hypotonia. It’s not actually that bad, I think... it does get in the way, but it’s liveable with. ② My earliest memories involved me being a selective mute. This was when I was 4 years old. I only felt comfortable talking at home, and even then I didn’t do it much. I also had OCD, apparently, which I think I can remember a little bit of at the back of my mind. Not too sure, though. ③ I like flowers. For symbolism, partly. But picking flowers has a sort of childish innocence that appeals to me, as well. I don’t think I have a favourite flower. ④ I interacted with Markiplier before I knew who he was... Everyone else on the server at the time knew, though. I was one of the few people on who was very confused. My exact thoughts were, “Who the Hell is this loser?” I was like... 12 or 13, maybe? It was back when he still played Minecraft. And I’m preetty damn sure it wasn’t a fake, seeming as I recall him typing in the chat with words that correlated exactly to what he recorded on his first episode of Drunk Minecraft. I didn’t say anything until after he finished recording and hung out for a bit because I practically just got on the server. ⑤ I’m half Italian. Have you ever been to an Italian Christmas family reunion at midnight? Because I have. It’s loud.

Alright Let’s Go is imminent
All the previous rants I had about this where left when my last Tumblr account was terminated, so I’ll just fill it back in.
Also I’m feeling the emotions so like
Basically, my general opinion about Pokemon as a whole is very positive. If someone were to ask me what my favorite video game was, I’d just say “Pokemon” because the games are similar enough to each other that I could just group them together, and because I’ve never not liked a Pokemon game I’ve played. I’m a simple man who likes fun and cute girls, and basically every game has done that for me (except for the original gen 2 games and earlier since I’ve never played them and also doubt I’d like them. I do look for good graphics in enjoyment tbh)
Obviously, all of this becomes a problem sometimes, since so many Pokemon “fans” have such stupid reasons for hating some the games... So much of it is just generic “It’s badly designed” or other stuff that’s literally just them saying “I don’t know why I hate it but I might as well try to sound smart” since you can’t just “not like” something nowadays. Not liking something is okay, since people have different wants and opinions, but saying that it’s bad because you don’t like it is such a self-absorbed idea. You’re saying that you’re so well immersed in the specifics of design that you simply going through and feeling negative emotions means that, deep down, it’s a bad game. It’s not.
There’s a serious gap between the consumer and the creator. You can’t just “consume” a bunch of games and then know what makes them good. You can’t just watch a bunch of Youtube videos about game design and know from them either, although that’s a step in the right direction. I don’t know what good game design is either, and I sure as hell won’t pretend that I do.
The biggest, most insulting thing I hear tossed around a lot is that Gamefreak “doesn’t care about their fans,” “is super lazy,” or “isn’t even trying.” This is one of the few times where I’m legitimately insulted on someone else’s behalf, because, even though I’ve never made a game and don’t plan on it, if I did and THAT was the response I got, I would feel like absolute shit. Sure, some Gamefreak executives probably just look at the numbers and do whatever gets them more money, but how the hell can you say that every single person involved in the creation process just doesn’t care, or is just lazy? They’re working on fucking POKEMON for Pete’s sake. How could you not only not enjoy that, but just casually toss something into the wind? That’s also not to mention how fucking ungrateful a lot of fans are. Some people just will not be pleased, and even though you’re trying to find what does, they’ll still hate it no matter what. It’d be aggravating. I’m sure after a while you’d just get used to it, but that obviously doesn’t mean it’s okay.
Speaking of being ungrateful, with regard to Let’s Go, just be glad you’re getting ANY Pokemon this year. I don’t remember it personally, but apparently there wasn’t even close to a major Pokemon game each year. There were spinoffs of course, but you couldn’t get that mainline itch scratched as much as they are now. People are mad that they’re getting a game that they don’t like, and they’d also be mad if they didn’t get any game at all. It’s like a bunch of whiny babies who will flail their arms if they don’t get exactly what they want.
Again, not all fans are like this, but obviously the vocal ones are.
Going into Let’s Go more specifically, I feel like a lot of people’s complaints are just things that MIGHT be able to be interpreted as negatives, so they then go on and say they’re bad. The big one that definitely leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths, is that the whole “gamer” community seems to have such a gigantic vendetta against mobile games. They’re for the casual gamers, not the HARDCORE #GAMERS like us. They’re simple, and I want complexity. They’re popular, and I want to be unique. It’s fucking insufferable. And then, once they hear that their non-mobile franchise is connecting with a mobile aspect, they go buck fucking wild. How DARE they. How DARE they appeal to more people, and do things that are strictly better for business. That sort of ties in with that one new Diablo game, but that hate is a bit more vindicated since (as far as I understand it) it’s REPLACING the console/PC game, instead of being a sort of tie-in like Let’s Go. Phones definitely aren’t made for major games like that, so I can sort of understand it. Hell, I hate using my phone for normal phone things...
Anyways, a lot of the more specific criticisms are either specifically designed to fit the target audience, or are completely subjective.
Talking about Let’s Go’s “Target Audience” is a pretty hefty topic, but it’s still a legitimate one. The game is not made for kids, nor for adults. It’s for people who either don’t know Pokemon and want to learn, or people who just want to play a casual, simple, and fun Pokemon game. GO players can fall into either of those categories.
For the former, things like forcing the player to catch certain types Pokemon to get into a gym, removing items and abilities, and especially only having the first 151 (Plus Meltan, Melmetal, and Alolan forms) help in that. There are over 800 Pokemon now, and many more abilities, moves, items, strategies... That’s so much to learn and adjust to for someone who knows nothing about the games. It’s intimidating, so these games help them adjust slowly to those things so they can delve deeper once they’re ready. Hell, personally, I think they shouldn’t have removed abilities and items for that purpose. They’re usually things that lie in the background, and can usually only be strictly good for you in a specific situation. You don’t usually have to work around them too much, meaning you might as well just keep them in so people can get used to them. Does it make the game bad? Not even close. Just because something could be better doesn’t mean they’re bad.
Then for the latter, things like the game being super easy comes to mind. I’ve NEVER enjoyed grinding. NEVER. I have no idea how some people could enjoy grinding. I will turn the EXP Share off from time to time if I feel like I’m at an okay level, but in general it’s super useful for me to not have to go through the painstaking process of fighting little wild Pokemon over and over again. I played through B2W2 recently, and for some reason I ended up super underleveled in that playthrough, and whenever I felt like I couldn’t beat someone, I had to go searching for Audino, running back and forth and back and forth until I saw shaking grass, and even then it wasn’t guaranteed to be there. Rinse and repeat many more times. That’s not fun, and people who think that is fun are one in a million, and honestly I’m jealous.
Also when it comes to ease, the “Handholding” aspect. That’s the biggest term that’s thrown around nowadays, like it’s the be-all end-all of quality. A lot of the times, it’s not even where people say it is. In Let’s Go, obviously there is handholding, because people want their hands held to adjust to the vast world of Pokemon, as mentioned. But, going back to Gen 7, all of the cutscenes and map markers that point you where to go are NOT handholding. They’re just story. Believe it or not, people IRL will tell you where to go if you need to do something somewhere. That goes into my idea that any kind of story can either be Realistic or Good For Storytelling if they want to be good in quality, and either can be acceptable. But, that’s a rant for another day. Also, I explicitly remember just leaving behind Firered/Leafgreen as a kid because I didn’t know I needed to go to Cinnabar Island, or where to get the tea to give to that one guard. Telling you where you NEED to go is fine because you don’t always HAVE to go straight in that direction. Plus, it’s pretty damn commonplace in other games, so why is it suddenly bad here?
That’s another thought I had about how some people seriously hate some Pokemon games: They’re comparing them to other Pokemon games, not other games as a whole. As far as it seems to me, all Pokemon games are “good games.” Everyone goes to war about which generation is the best, completely forgetting that they all could be so much worse. Like mentioned, a ton of stuff they say is “bad” is very likely just something they don’t like, but either way they’re still so good. My least favorite generation is EASILY Gen 2, but Heartgold and Soulsilver are widely seen as the BEST games, and I can’t blame them. That’s TWO regions! I really only don’t like the Generation because I don’t really like any of the Pokemon, but basically everything else is clearly top-notch, for both a Pokemon game and any old game.
Some other ones:
The “Friendly Rival.” It’s completely subjective whether or not the rival should be an asshole. Saying it’s “bad” and blaming this petty thing for your dislike of the current games is extremely dumb. A lot of the people who say this are just looking for a reason to say something it’s bad, instead of just saying they “don’t like it”
The One-to-one scale replica of the original games. H.. how... How is this a negative? It’s a REMAKE! Sure, it would be nice if they freshened it up a bit, but it’s not necessary! All that “B-but it’s a different console with different needs!” is, again, just you trying to deny that you only don’t like the game. It does have different needs, and they met those needs. The scale of the world isn’t one of those needs.
The two new Pokemon designs (or just any design in general). I’m repeating myself here: You can’t just consume designs and know good designs. Even then, you’re still just trying to sound smart and not emotional. I’ll probably go more in detail about this later, since I’m actually trying to study character design (as much as possible at least) and this is actually where I know some things.
But, I guess the tie-in for all my ideas is that people are angry/worried that Let’s Go will be the future of the franchise. I actually have no idea how fucking stupid those people can be.
It’s not. Not even close.
They EXPLICITLY said that these games are not for hardcore fans, and THEIR game is going to be in 2019. They’re deviating from you people FOR A REASON. THEY KNOW THEY’RE DOING IT, AND THEY ARE NOT GOING TO KEEP IT THIS WAY. Seriously, they make one game that deviates from the norm, and all of a sudden people think that it’s “THE FUTURE OF THE FRANCHISE!!!” Sure, they might end up making Let’s Go versions of Johto or whatever in the future, but if they do then they’ll basically be spinoff-main games for casual people. The main-main games will stay as they are, and likely will become better if this is the case, since all the casual fans will go to Let’s Go, and the non-Let’s Go games can focus even more on the hardcore fans.
All in all, the existence of Let’s Go is an objective positive for the franchise. Stop whining, you’ll get your chance.
I’m gettin Let’s Go Eevee btw. I’m excited, since I’ve never actually played through Kanto in its entirety. I have Firered, but I never really got into it. I obviously know every point of it, but it’s obviously because it’s so famous. I never really liked the Kanto mons, but I can probably forge a team from them nowadays since I haven’t used them as much. I usually try to make teams of Pokemon I haven’t used before, mixed with Pokemon I just genuinely like. So far, I think I’m going to go somewhere along the ways of having Blastoise/Poliwrath, Primape, Nidoking, Dodrio, Rapidash, and obviously Eevee. I don’t know too much about where to find Ponyta, Squirtle, and Poliwag, but I’d say that’s my favorite team possible from the Kanto mons.

Also HELL YES FOR CASUAL PLAYER LOVE
Im so happy to hear that Let's Go is indeed INTENTIONALLY designed to be "more casual" and everything these super anti-casual conpetitive players are complaining about was intentionalky put in there cos the developers legit think its better. THANK YOU!
i dunno man it just seems like we NEVER heae about the developers doing anything for the fans unless its enablibg competitive play or iv breeding or whatever. Like those are the only definitions of "fans" that interviewers seem to care about. And Its hard to know what the developers really think when the questions that are asked leave out a huge componant of the fanbase, yknow?
And uhh.. I mean its just good to specificially know that theyre okay with casual fans existing, like not just "its for kids" but "hey you are not bad if you are an adult who also enjoys the game for its intended appeal points and not for a huge mega complicated mathematical metagame people made up to be 'more mature'". I was really surprised to see that written interview with masuda specifically mentioning IV breeding as the place where conpetitive goes too far and makes the game not fun anymore. "Pokemon wasn't meant to be a game about hatching eggs and nothing else." Like.. Playing competitively itself is not bad, i dont wanna sound like i hate hardcore fans and im a big ol jerk. I admire the dedication because it all seems so super unattainable and mathematically magical to me! Im not into that stuff but i can admire that you have to be a damn genius to achieve all that stuff. BUT i also get what he's saying. Because it sucks when you HAVE to be a damn genius to EVEN START PLAYING! Whenever high level competitive strats become the goddamn baseline it makes competitive completely inaccessable to everyone except the most hardcore of the hardcore, and its like damn man how do you even become that if you have no way to start practising? Iv breeding is so INSANE in retrospect! Like when you think about it, its wild that people even cracked the code for how to game the system and get the highest possible randomized stats for every ridiculously minor thing. Like how the fuck did they even figure out any of this?? And then all the further madness into figuring out how to attain it and how to raise odds of shinys and hidden abilities and how they keep figuring out new ways to do it with every new system each game brings out. And then people will spend friggin LITERAL DAYS OF REAL TIME running up and down the same road in the game, hatching thousands of eggs just to get the one mathematically superior pokemon from a confluence of random events. And this is treated as fuckin REQUIRED to play the game! You can't touch competitive if you dont do it. And these bad sorts of competitive players will try and force this requirement onto other non-competitive parts of the game, and shame casual players for not doing it even though its literally not what they want to play the game for.
Seriously, man! Individual values were just designed to make individual pokemon more random, so the play experience would seem more unique to each run. It was literally invented for a "casual" reason! It just really sucks that they implimented it in a way that had an objective "best" value to get, so people ignored the whole point of "adding personality" and just wanted that one. Tho i mean at least they patched out the early issue where gender and shinyness were linked to these values so you couldnt get certain types of pokemon as the "best" version and it was even more limiting. Glad that GSC didnt have online metagame yet, lol! (Tho it makes it possible for people to more easily predict which pokenon will become Shiny when transferred from rby to gsc, which is neat.)
ANYWAY WHERE WAS I
Oh yeah! I appreciate that each generation of games lately has made it easier to see your IVs and EVs and to get them to their "best" versions, with even the FUCK YEAH feature pf being able to "fix" bad IVs on level 100 pokemon. I carried my Sneasel named Reaper since RSE and he's been completely unuseable for so long and bottlecaps fixed that! Kid me just played the game like he was my starter and i loved him. I didnt know about IVs or EVs, so i took this terribly-statted dude with a bad ability and made him fight all the wrong pokemon because he is my best friend and he needs to win every gym battle and i will buy him lemonades afterward. Also he wore the Blackglasses item forever cos i thougjt itd be cool if you could put accessories on your pokemon. So yeah i did Everything Wrong and thus all the pokemon i actually cared about were made weak and useless by my love and i had to spend 48 hours running down a stupid road to hatch and abandon 1400 new ones just to get one that was "useable". Thanks to bottlecaps, this is no more! Decade old weasel pals can be revived! Tho still it sucks that i hit level 100 before this mon's evolution came out. Alas!
BUT
Like.. Even tho now its slightly less hard to make a "perfect" pokemon its still tedious as hell and really takes you out of the moment and you have to already know beforehand that its necessary. Kids are just gonna blunder in and not even know why they keep losing due to no fault of their own. Adults are gonna also do that. Seriously this isnt a "kiddy fans vs mature fans" or "non fans versus FANS" thing, this is just "fans who have one very specific skill for memorizing a bunch of numbers and steps and enduring hours of boredom doing it vs..people who think that kinda ruins the game". And even if nintendo fully streamlined the process into sonething easy, itd still feel like an unnecessary roadblock in the way of just getting to play the damn game. We really need to add some sort of hardcore/casual or iv breeding/no iv breeding thing to league divisions, as well as the tier lists. This is why im so hyped for the current "Spooky Cup", since it actually seems like a "just for fun" multiplayer experience, and its kinda dumb that we have to rely on nintendo actually programming limitations into a tournement cos the players refuse to allow anyone to just do it normally. I did a big whoop at "no mega stones" and "everyone gets a participation prize even if they lose"! And the limitations being a random event based thing rather than a skill cap! Yay ghost types!! Reminds me of the baby pokemon only tourneys in the n64 games. That was a kind of hardcore challenge that had a bit of creativity to it!
So anyway anyway what i'm getting at...
I'm just happy that the devs are saying "yes this is a casual game with more of what casual players want, and less of those hardcore limitations" and THATS NOT MEANT TO BE A NEGATIVE!! Actual developers sitting on a couch hugging giant pikachu plushies and saying this game is for people who just want a fun game about..well, hugging pikachus! They changed the way you catch pokemon because they wanted it to be more fun. They brought back following pokemon because fun. You get all these new features for your starter because they wanted you to really feel like a kid going on their first pokemon adventure and sharing all these special moments with pikachu! They talked about how the art style was decided upon because it was the closest to "how you imagined it in your head when you played pokemon yellow", and "if it was photorealistic it just wouldnt feel right". They picked eevee for the second option because they actually paid attention to the fans and which pokemon was the second most popular and had a similar "both cute and cool" appeal with all audiences. And they put the most effort into the visuals and the cuteness and making everything just feel like a good and fun adventure that recaptures everything you wanted as a kid playing the first game.
And they just act so unapologetically HAPPY about all these parts of the game! These are their favourite parts! They're the goddamn DEVELOPERS and even they say that they prefer the story and the characters and the relaxing childlike whimsy to the concept of refining gameplay to a ridiculous hardcore perfection and throwing out everything else in pursuit of that. And man, seeing them hugging the big pika and eev plushies in EVERY PROMOTIONAL VIDEO and just enjoying playing their own game so much!! And babbling on about dressing up your pokemon!!
God its just SO GOOD to see this as a fan who's been here since the very beginnibg and is starting to feel quite self concious about being an adult fan who isnt doing it "properly". Like man the pressure of hardcore competotive being the "only right way" started even when i was just 11, like seriously THE AGE THE ACTUAL TRAINERS ARE IN THE GODDAMN GAME. Before you even hit your teens you already got stuck up older kids telling you you were too old to just enjoy a game cos you enjoyed the damn game, noooo you have to make it as unfun as possible and only derive enjoyment from defeating other people. It took me until ORAS to actually even be able to try competitive at all, i found it so overwhelming until they added other methods to EV train. And even then i still felt like the blandness of the preparation outweighed any fun of playing these "higher level" battles. Like sure maybe some people like that stuff but it felt so dissappointing after all these years of being pressured to try it...
Sometimes its just good to enjoy a game cos you legit like the world and characters. Sometimes its just really validating to see the developers talking about enjoying making those things, cos it gives you permission to be less embarrassed about it. Sometimes its good to also see them hugging a hundred dollar giant pikachu while you hug your hundred dollar giant mimikyu. Cos seriously what is the point of being an adult if youre not allowed to buy these adult sized plushies? What kid could ever afford those! Im not letting my childhood dream pass me by just because ~maturity~ when im finally able to slap a fat wad of cash on the table and yell GIVE ME THE BIGGEST CHU
I will embrace all my pure childhood love and enjoy this game of just huggins and nothing else! And i really like this concept for the series, if they continue doing Let's Go as a spinoff so we'd have a set of games appealing to each of the casual and hardcore demographics. I always feel bad complaining about hardcore when really my actual opinion on it is just "its not for me" and im actually only complaining about the rude fans who tell me im not a real fan unless i like their genre of stuff. Dude i was three years old when pokemon came out, i think ive earned my right by seniority to hug a plushie or two! So itd be awesome if hardcore doods could get their super hardcore game too, and we could just argue less cos we'd each be able to enjoy what we enjoy. Tho i mean the main series games already have a pretty clear divide between story/fun being the main game and hardcore competitive being a postgame thing. And yet we still get all this fandom fightibg over "ignore the actual 90% of the game, skip the plotline and only play competitive" apparantly being the "real" way to play it. Like man im worried that attitude is still gonna stick arpund even if they do give us separate games appealing to each side of the fandom?
EHHH WHATEVER! Im just gonna sit here in my corner of casual hugs and work on my self confidence to be able to stop feeling bad about not being someone else's idea of a "real" fan. If real fans can't have pikachu in a little hat, then that is not the life i wanna lead!
LITTLE GODDAMN HAT, MY GUY
