'90s Beauty Moment: Alexander McQueen's No.13 show, with Paralympic athlete Aimee Mullins
If you’re a regular listener to the BeautyMe Podcast or follow my TikTok then you might know that I produced a series of ‘90s Beauty Moments as an alternative Advent Calendar for the month of December. I don’t really enjoy ‘enforced content creation’, but, I did that series because I wanted to see if I could. As time passed and I became more accustomed to sitting in front of my phone camera and sharing moments I truly felt anyone from any generation could love, I realised once again, just how much I loved beauty, in all its forms. Now that the series is over, I’ll be picking out certain episodes and adding a little more meat to the bones I provided, so today, I’m sharing a little bit more about my beloved Alexander McQueen.
Tumblr media
I’ve always been attracted to pretty things, but I also believe there is beauty in everything, even in decay - I’ll just as likely photograph some dying flowers as I would some new Pat McGrath makeup. Beauty isn’t just about glowing, youthful skin; it’s also in the lines and wrinkles that hint at our life stories. I feel like Alexander McQueen had a real obsession with the darker side of beauty; so many of his shows featured references to animals - from feathers to skulls - and for his 13th show, No.13, he showed the fashion world how his fascination with prosthetics created for the First World War inspired an entire collection.
No.13 was the name of McQueen’ SS99 collection, shown in 1998.
Tumblr media
If you know your fashion then you’re probably thinking you know exactly which moment I’m going to talk about when it comes to this beautiful, ground-breaking show. You’re probably thinking I’m talking about the finale, where we see model (and former ballet dancer) Shalom Harlow wearing a cotton trapeze dress that’s being spray painted by two robots hired from a car manufacturer. It’s definitely a striking moment in fashion history and came up in conversation again recently when Paris-based designer Coperni’s SS23 show featured two men spray-painting a dress onto top model Bella Hadid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bella Hadid onstage for Coperni’s SS23 show
But for me, there’s another moment – the first time a designer casts a model with prosthetic limbs to walk on the catwalk. The show itself was a romantic yet sinister tribute to the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 1800s, something that inspired McQueen throughout his short career. So many of the designs featured ruffled leather and lace, laser cut wooden corsets, with many of the pieces being inspired by the workshops of Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton, which pioneered prosthetics for those injured during the first World War. This is also a show where we first notice McQueen’s evolving approach to footwear as he sends Paralympic champion Aimee Mullins down the runway wearing a beautiful pair of cherry wood prosthetic legs that were hand-carved to a design of McQueen’s, said to be inspired by the work of Dutch-British sculptor and wood-carver, Grinling Gibbons.
Tumblr media
In an interview with Another Magazine, Aimee Mullins said she wanted to be involved because it was her ‘mission’ to challenge prevailing attitudes towards beauty.
The cherry wood prosthetics, designed by Alexander McQueen for Aimee Mullins
"I want to be seen as beautiful because of my disability, not in spite of it," she said. "People keep asking me: 'why do you want to get into this world that’s so bitchy and so much about physical perfection?' That’s why. That’s why I want to do it," she said.
McQueen himself said: "I wouldn’t swap the people I’ve been working with for a supermodel. They’ve got so much dignity and there’s not a lot of dignity in high fashion."
Tumblr media
This is also the first show that made Alexander McQueen cry, and I can really see why. If you want to hear more, listen to the mini podcast dedicated to the show below.
For more ‘90s Beauty Moments, you can listen to BeautyMe Podcast anywhere you like, or watch the videos for all 25 moments, including this one, over on my TikTok @charissekenion. Thanks for reading.

Rihanna gets ugly for Interview magazine Spring issue but didn't Madonna do it first?
In episode 247 of the Beauty Me Podcast I dive into the conversation around the new Rihanna cover for the spring issue of Interview magazine.
It’s a cover that’s upset a lot of her fans because she’s not looking as pretty as they’re used to and it’s also upset others for the religious connotations we see. In this episode I first look at Rihanna’s history as a risk-taker when it comes to fashion, before going on to briefly discuss Interview’s own history as a magazine that doesn’t do safe/squeaky clean content. Then I go on to break down the cover, including the team, the image that inspired the look, the ensuing backlash and I’ll also touch upon the woman who first really rattled religious groups, the icon that is Madonna.
In the episode I promised to post a blog featuring all of the imagery I mention so that you would have a visual aid while you listen. Below you can check out the episode itself and as you scroll down you’ll see all the images as well as my sources. Shady aestheticians, Bali Body's self-tanner marketing and toxic beauty on America's Next Top Model
This week I’m diving into three key beauty stories that have basically annoyed a lot of us, or, if not you, me!
First up, it’s a shady aesthetician who Photoshopped Stranger Things actress Natalia Dyer to look prettier, then I move on to the toxic beauty standards that Tyra Banks and her America’s Next Top Model team fed us back in the 2000s and finally I settle on the Bali Body Self-tanner marketing that basically shows white women how they can change their skin colour while never having to deal with racism, stereotypes or hate.
I’d love to know what you thought of these stories and please let me know if you’ve got a particular beauty story you’d like me to look into. Email me [email protected] or DM me on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast.

Video
Starting the week with another snippet from my @beautymepodcast review of @toxicbeauty.doc - here I’m explaining the subplot of the documentary; medical student Mymy Nguyen examining the chemical burden on her body when she goes back to zero products. Like many of us Mymy’s makeup and skincare regime is something she feels she can’t do without, and she also comments on the fact that women of colour are given the additional burden of having lightening products marketed to them. Let me know if you’ve seen the documentary yet or if you’ve checked out my full video over on YouTube. New video podcast coming later this week. By the way, let me know if you think I should keep podcast stuff over on my other Insta? 🤔 . . . . . #beautymepodcast #beauty #beautypodcast #podcast #hypebaebeauty #toxicbeauty #podsincolor #toxicbeautydocumentary #skin #discoverunder1k #brokendocumentary #chemicalburden #skinfasting #cleanbeauty #cleanbeautyproducts #skincare #skinlightening (at Birmingham, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9ObeGipu3t/?igshid=b33txngzqvix

Really enjoyed my latest podcast. My chat with makeup artist @nush.mu was enlightening, inspiring, informative and fun! Seriously, you need to listen, especially when she talks about going in with her skincare 😱😭😕 Love that we talked about makeup but also our shared love for The Power of Now. Nush is also a major fan of mindfulness as a way of combatting down days and we talk about how she was doing Euphoria makeup before it became a hashtag. #facts 💁🏽Image by me but to see more of her work head to @beautymepodcast or to Nush’s insta ASAP. Who is 'That Girl'? And do you really want to be her?
At times of overwhelm we tend to fall into one of two categories; we either log off, socially and literally, taking time out to just allow all the feelings, or we try to find SOLUTIONS! How can we fix this? There must be a way to get through this! Many times over the past few months a common solution to dealing with life in 2021 often comes up as being ‘that girl’, or, as one of my favourite podcast hosts Pia Baroncini puts it, ‘that bitch’.
In this episode I discuss the concept of being 'that girl' and share some examples of the content and 'tips' that have been created around it, and look at the possible pitfalls of following any trend that's about us bettering ourselves. Does that ultimately mean that we don't like our current selves? I'd love to know what you think; let me know if you're an avid subscriber to 'that girl' content, or if you're concerned about trends turning toxic. Either say hi in the DMs over on Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me [email protected].

Burnout Pt2: DIY solutions and expert treatments
Ending the year on a chilled note, this episode is part 2 of my focus on burnout. While the first episode – number 97 – was all about sharing experiences and solutions from my guests, this part is more about the things I like to do to just try and get my body and mind back into some kind of balance.
I'm sharing my top five things to do when burnout is making an appearance but it's definitely a case of finding what's right for you. What works for me, might not suit you, and sometimes, what I rely on might not work at all!
In this episode I discuss everything from luxe candles to mindful massages and simple breathing techniques. I feel like this is the ideal time of year to share because so many of us are feeling the very real pressures that come with the 'festive period'. It's not all fun and games, so I hope this gives you something when you need a time out.
Thank you so much for listening; do please share this with anyone who might need it. And do please rate, review and subscribe! See you soon but in the meantime be sure to sign up for my newsletter, and follow me @beautymepodcast on Instagram and Twitter.

Stereotypes and curly hair standards with model and law student Paris Omar
Episode 80
This episode was something a bit different. Instead of the usual audio-first conversation I decided to host my first LIVE podcast on Instagram. So if you haven’t checked it out and you want to see my guest and I in the flesh, go to @beautymepodcast on Insta and you’ll see it on my IGTV.
My guest is Paris Omar, a Liverpudlian law student and model. Over the past year or so we have often chatted about our mixed heritage, our love for The Real Housewives of Atlanta and shared our thoughts on how others view us, particularly when it comes to our hair.
I wanted to ask Paris on to the show to discuss how she experiences the modelling industry as a mixed race woman, how the industry has affected how she views herself and her beauty and why straight hair is still viewed as more sexy and glamorous by the media at large. You can find Paris on Instagram @itsparischanel and I hope you love this episode if you do, please like, review and subscribe. Thanks for listening!

Eyebrow evolutions and the stigma of creating content as a pro makeup artist with Isabel Rosado
Episode 73
Born in Brooklyn New York, to a Cuban mum and Puerto Rican dad, Isabel Rosado knew that makeup was in her future from childhood.
I've wanted to invite Isabel onto the podcast for a while, because her often daily makeup creations have always been a source of enjoyment and inspiration for me. She's definitely someone I can watch and minutes later I'll be Googling the products she's used. I wanted to find out more about her daily life, especially as we segue into some kind of new-ish normal after being on lockdown for a year.
In this episode Isabel talks about the magic of her morning coffee ritual and explains how growing up with a hairstylist for a mum meant countless hours at the salon, watching women transform before her eyes.
We of course talk about skincare - turns out Isabel loves her Elemis products - and she talks me through how she went from waking her sister up in the middle of the night to do her makeup, to working at MAC, to being Katie Jane Hughes' first assistant at New York Fashion Week. We also discuss some of the positives of lockdown as well as the industry stigma of making content for social media platforms and YouTube.
Be sure to check out Isabel's Makeup & Cocktails on a Friday night over on Instagram @isabelyrosado and you can find me @beautymepodcast. Thanks so much for listening. Do please like, share, subscribe; all that good stuff really helps with getting BeautyMe out there.

Why makeup is thrilling and therapy for photographer Brinsley Edwards
Episode 72
Brinsley Edwards is a talented, inspiring and inspired New York-based photographer and director who works mostly in fashion and beauty. Born and raised in North Carolina, she moved to New York to pursue her photography career back in 2017. Of course, like many of us, her creative career ground to a halt as we entered the pandemic in early 2020.
In this episode I find out how makeup became Brinsley's go-to when it came to just getting through lockdown. She shares that journaling, writing morning pages and reading The Artist’s Way (a favourite of mine also) have helped with motivation and just being kinder to herself.
Brinsley admits that: ‘everything I know about skincare is from TikTok’ and shares early memories of playing with her grandmother’s red lipstick and why she's taken up embroidery again. This episode is for the creatives and for those who are still too nervous to claim that label as their own. Oh, and a special thank you to Brinsley's cat Bestie, for making an entrance. I hope you love this one!
You can follow Brinsley on Instagram and check me out @beautymepodcast. Thank you for listening.

Why don't we talk about periods more PLUS Black Is King hair and beauty
EPISODE 39
In this episode I wanted to focus on two things I've been dedicating a lot of thought to:why we don’t discuss our periods more and Beyonce's epic Black Is King, specifically the hair and makeup.
Currently I’m looking for a period coach to be a guest on the podcast, but for now I wanted to share just how much I've been thinking about my period lately. I don’t know why, but it’s also been a highly discussed topic with my friends; we’re talking about the kind of impact that this monthly happening has on us. Like, we totally just accept it, right? We call it Aunt Flo or any other name you prefer, we accept it and we just get on with things. We keep going to work, we keep showing up to events, we keep producing ‘content’. But if men had periods, and the pain and the hormones that often accompany them, wouldn’t the world be a whole lot different?
I've also been musing over Beyonce's Black Is King, a movie inspired by her The Lion King; The Gift album, which is in turn of course inspired by Disney's The Lion King. Here I'm totally focused on the hair and makeup looks, and although there's no way I could mention all of them, I share some of my absolute favourite moments.
To check out more of the Black Is King looks, check out Bey's hair team: @nealfarinah and @nakiarachon, plus makeup artists @sirjohn and @rokaelbeauty - of course there were many, many more hair and beauty pros involved - just check out the credits! Until next week, do subscribe, rate and review and you can find me @beautymepodcast over on Instagram,. Thanks so much for listening!

Hi guys! I’ll definitely be doing a post to say heeeeey to the new followers but today I just wanted to share something that might keep you occupied/entertained/inspired. I loved interviewing @charlottesevensix of @sevensixagency and co-host of @sustainablyinfluenced podcast 🙌🏽 for my podcast @beautymepodcast. We talk about how tough it is to be sustainable AND a beauty lover; how Charlotte found her own identity and also, refreshingly, how unapologetically dedicated she is to building her business. Of course we talk about all the usual stuff too. Click the link in my bio to listen, and also, please let anyone who NEEDS to know, this episode is sponsored by @yourheights a brain health supplement, and they are giving 50% discount to all BeautyMe listeners off their first purchase. Throughout June @yourheights is also donating £10 per purchase to the Black, African and Asian Therapy Network (BAATN @baatn_network). BAATN aims to address the inequality of access to appropriate psychological services for black people. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t know BAATN existed so do please share if you think this could help someone ♥️ (at Birmingham, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBYVivTgFup/?igshid=1hqu9tt0694uj

Meet the Founder: Fiona Co Chan of Youthforia the viral beauty brand
This week it’s a new Meet the Founder episode, and it’s one that I know a lot of you have been excited for. If you don’t already know, Meet the Founder always takes place first on Instagram Live. It’s a really great way for brand founders to connect with future founders and share their experiences. As it’s a live experience, the editing is minimal – so you might hear the odd glitch! But my guest’s advice makes it all worth it.
If you don’t know the name Fiona Co Chan, that could be forgiven, but I’d be surprised if you didn’t know her brand or its hero product. Youthforia is the brand that Fiona created in April 2021, yep, at the height of the pandemic, and its hero product, BYO Blush Colour Changing Blush Oil, which works with your individual skin ph to give you your own perfect pink blush, has made serious waves on social media. From the outset San Francisco native Fiona knew she wanted to utilise TikTok in particular, but coming from a tech background, she kind of started out by doing everything herself, from looking at formulas and design to creating content, something she’d never done before.
As such she shares that creating a beauty brand was a real test of her resilience and taught her so much about her own mental health journey. Be sure to check out Youthforia on Instagram @getyouthforia and if you want to see us chatting face to face, kinda, head to @beautymepodcast on Instagram and go to the Meet the Founder series on my main page.

Why therapy works with makeup artist Rachel Estabrook
This week’s guest is New York-based makeup artist and podcast host Rachel Estabrook. You might already know Rachel's work or you might recognise her name from the recent burnout podcast I did.
I wanted to invite Rachel on for a dedicated episode because not only is she a makeup artist who freely shares her work journey, she’s also pretty funny, often poking at the ups and downs of life on-set and she’s recently been very open about her experiences of therapy. Oh and she’s also a podcast host too! Although she’s currently on a break, you can check out all the episodes of Seriously Made Up here.
In this episode I ask Rachel if she’s open to sharing more on what therapy really is and how it's changed, improved or affected her life. I also wanted to find out how she first fell in love with makeup and of course I ask about the beauty products she’s loving right now - as you can expect, there’s quite a few, and they’re all listed below for you.
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did! You can check Rachel and her work @estabrookartistry on Instagram and be sure to check out her beauty industry podcast Seriously Madeup anywhere you like to listen. Do please rate and review and be sure to follow me on Instagram @beautymepodcast. If you want to stay in touch with everything else I’m up to, sign up to my newsletter: https://beautymenotes.substack.com and you can also find me on YouTube.
