Remembering photographer Harold Chapman who passed away earlier this month at his home in Kent, UK at the age of 95. Best known for his iconic photos of the 9 Rue Gît-le-Cœur, later known as the Beat Hotel, where he lived for 5 years photographing its inhabitants who included William S Burroughs, Brion Gysin, Ian Sommerville, Gregory Corso, Harold Norse, Peter Orlovsky and of course Allen. He was in fact the last resident to vacate in 1963 when it changed owners (it’s now 4.5 star hotel ‘Relais Hôtel du Vieux Paris’) In those days it was 1 pound sterling a day..and filled with penniless students. Poetry and writing or poetic writing can find inspiration in the oddest ugly and turn it into something somewhat beautiful or astonishngly magical.

It is to truly see the world and see where redemption can be found, and the connection we have to everything can heal us.

The question is why are we broken in the first place? What is the meaning of our time in this life? Telling and listening stories is how we find our place. This is where the answer lies.

William S. Burroughs: A Man Within explores the life of a Beat writer who was arguably the grittiest and most bedeviling of the group. Despite his association with punk and grunge, Burroughs's work was lyrically plaintive and his voice provided a window to his ineffable sadness. The documentary features interviews with Burroughs and his admirers, but they frustratingly only alight on his literary significance when speaking in terms of personal influence. Leyser attempts to equate Burroughs's gun fetishism with Hunter S. Thompson's recklessness, but Burroughs's most accomplished fiction was the boiling run-off of his inner-demon-induced sweat. Burroughs epitomized the 20th-century ideal of the over-educated libertine and forever changed the conversation about sexual orientation, but his last boyfriend recounts an evening where he confessed his love, only to be laughingly dismissed. A Man Within persuasively argues that Burroughs's most dangerous addiction might have been the refusal of love.
