My Issue with The Infamous Louis Panel

I think y’all know exactly what I’m talking about so let me just dive into it.

Aside from Louis being a total hypocrite and being involved with the very livestock business HE came from, this panel had the potential to completely change Louis’ character and (possibly) his influence on the Beastars plot but this panel is NEVER mentioned again. You could cut it from the entire plot and it literally wouldn’t impact the story whatsoever.

So next to it making Louis no better than the carnivores that sold him as livestock (or pretty much exactly like them!), it’s probably the most uselessness panel in the entire manga! (Or one of the top ten worst plot points from the story, whatever you wanna call it)

That all being said, here’s how I approach it in my fanfics…Completely ignore it! I acknowledge and include Louis being involved in and witnessing some illegal stuff while boss of the Shishigumi, but just the drug and meat dealing/eating and cannibalism on his part.

Now, here’s what I think SHOULD have happened with this panel:

Have an entire chapter dedicated to it and it showing Louis’ shock and horror that the livestock business is somehow still active, demand the immediate release of the poor kids in it, and then use his status as the Shishigumi’s boss to find out how he ended up being sold as livestock and where his birth parents are.

OR! This but Louis has time to really think about it and weigh his options: Chose his own survival and truly become a predator animal, just like carnivores or try to save those children and risk his own life in doing so (I was convinced the Shishigumi would kill him if he attempted something like that when I first read the manga and I could see a similar situation happening here too-albeit maybe it would have been whoever runs the livestock trade or it’s customers).

Side thought: If Louis were forced into it (meaning he didn’t want to be part of the livestock trade and tried to have it shit down but was told he could be killed/eaten if he didn’t), he could have had a total identity crisis and feeling immense guilt and (possibly) a real bonding moment where members of the Shishigumi try to comfort him and reveal that this is what life in the Black Market is truly like: That everyone is prey that can be killed and eaten at any time. A place to kill or be killed.

In either scenario, Louis would be forced to re-think his entire belief system and previous convictions about what it means to be predator and prey animals and which side he’s on. This could have also been a chance for him to truly come to terms with his past and find closure for what had happened to him, which arguably could have been just as impactful (if not more so) than Louis meeting Ibuki and the Shishigumi.

TLDR: That panel of Louis selling kids as livestock is completely useless and is a terrible missed opportunity for character growth and serious angst.

Made a little fanfic about how Heavy and Medic's first interaction in my TF2 x Beastars AU went down.

If you don't know what Beastars is, I recommend watching at least a little of the anime to get a feel for it (tho' some of the things I mention in the fic will reference certain things that's shown in season 2, so be warned ig). It's on Netflix, but you can also just pirate it if you don't have a subscription. You didn't hear it from me tho' :)

see this is what i love about beastars they just go BALLS TO THE WALLS with the world building for the sake of this strange allegory!! and you'd think having the whole animal thing represent multiple ideas would be messy, but the way itagaki-sensei maneuvers the world so that the animal allegory represents different things at different times is actually really clever! i think trying to piece together what exactly the animal allegory is trying to say at the moment is a really interesting exercise because

OF COURSE your reaction to "theres eugenics in beastars" is WHAT THE FUCK THERES EUGENICS IN BEASTARS??? but then you remember what the rest of beastars is ABOUT, so now the question becomes "how does the eugenics in beastars relate to the overall message about identity?"

characters in beastars struggle with the idea of perception vs identity. at some point in the story, nearly EVERYONE is a victim of some kind of prejudice. the prejudice in the world of beastars shows how the perceptions of society shape our identity, whether we choose to accept social conventions or not.

What counts as "Anthro"?

For a character to be elligible for submission they must:

Have a humanoid body, but animal facial features. What this means is that they have to walk around on two legs but their face must be the face of an animal. I don't want to see any humans who just happen to have cat ears in the submissions, they gotta look like someone sewed an animal head onto a human torso. The body can be anything from fully humanized to something like a literal rat that walks on two legs.

Be based on a real life animal. I'm not gonna add fictional species for this poll, because they fall in a bit of a gray area between anthro and just a separate species altogether. Remember to specify what animal your submission is supposed to be.

Be relatively well known. You can submit obscure characters (in fact, PLEASE submit obscure characters) but no ocs. If google shows no results for them they cannot be submitted.

Not be from a dating sim because there are way, way too many of them. This rule is only here so I don't end up googling 50 different R18 furry dating sims. Spare me please, I beg of thee.

Not be from any sort of real life religion because that's disrespectful as shit.

Seriously Kopi Luwak could have been such an interesting antagonist for Legoshi, there was so much potential. I feel like that organisation would have been far better at exploring the hardships of mixed species than solely just relying on Melon. Sure, Melon was the product of what can happen in extreme cases if someone is pushed to the margins but I feel like Kopi Luwak was set up to be a way darker foe than Melon just killing to feel alive.

Our introduction to then is that they targeted children in a kindergarden of mixed species animals and according to Free their goal is to eliminate all mixed species animals and the leader wanted to assess Melon's "worth". Gosha was there to defend the kids but based on his reaction this gang may have genuinely killed literal children.

It would have been super interesting to have Gosha more entangled with them, perhaps getting critical damage or barging in when Legoshi was there and thus expose Legoshi as a mixed species animal and turn him into the Kopi Luwak's target. Especially if they learn Legoshi's love is not only not of his own species, but an herbivore to the boot. Like what if they tried to capture him to turn him into a test/study subject.

Then the composition of the Kopi Luwak could be a dangerous combo as well. Deshico himself looks harmless but the bats he employs are a different case. Bats can carry around diseases like rabies (that is a certain miserable death to other mammals) for their entire life. Being a reptile descendant Legoshi may have a survival chance but if they used that for their means that would be terrifying.

Another interesting question would be how would Yahya come into this. We know he has a deep grudge towards mixed species relations as a whole since in his eyes that took Gosha away from him and he is prone to excessive force when it comes to carnivore criminals but I don't want to think he'd be on board with full-on genocide.

It cannot be denied though that the government shows favoritism for same species couples and will subsidize bringing forth children, while mixed species families are just barely tolerated and usually are massively frowned upon to the degree that kids are not accepted into regular daycare. With an environment like that I don't find it impossible that aithorities would willingly turn a blind eye to or outright support the vile conduct of the Kopi Luwak, just as the Mayor wanted to keep Haru's kidnapping a secret to preserve the fragile facade of peace.

Further complicating factor could be if on top of all this Legoshi wanted to keep Melon from this group's grasp because even his murderous ass doesn't deserve whatever the Kopi Luwak wanted of him and Melon slowly finding that he actually does enjoy being around Legoshi and not in his usual mocking way

Okay, because I just heard the spoilers for the Beastars ending, my stupid brain keeps thinking about the ultimate cosmic joke if any endgame pairings indeed got together and had kids. It is awful, but I need to just set it down and let it exist. Juno x Louis: End up having a kid together because apparently Azuki can't have children and they worked out an accord for a poly relationship. Their child is a very tall Red Wolf girl that has a tiny short tail and very blunt teeth that is extremely popular in school because she got famous as being the kid in grade school who could be satisfied with just tomato and mayo sandwiches (which Louis is very confused about since all of her parents have a much more refined taste). Els x Bill: Nobody was remotely surprised when they got together--except their families, ha--but they were very surprised at how fast they had kids. Five of them, all told; all girls. Two sets of twins and one last surprise with them being born three years apart. All of them are very small white tigers with very thick coats that give them marbled accents. The youngest has a set of horns to set her apart, but all of them have no taste for meat or inclination to try it (a massive relief to Bill, because while the Back Alley Market is less of a thing than it was when he was young, he still worries terribly about Els coming across one of the girls hiding meat or with blood smeared across their lips after they reached puberty). Haru x Legosi: Because they did get married very soon after high school, everyone was in attendance to their wedding; and everyone got an invite--less than a year later when Haru got pregnant--to the baby shower. And everyone helped out and visited when she landed in the hospital because holy shit did the baby get big--Els and Juno made sure to get pictures of Haru almost being as wide as she was tall at the end. But the baby turned out healthy and wonderful with her bunny looks and Legosi's coloring. Of course when the boy got to high school and hit puberty, he got just as tall as his dad, with about a million animals being attracted to him, all with his growing sharp teeth and a rising inclination towards more substantial protein than just the eggs he ate (Legosi can't help but feel this is a little unfair since he's the only one of his friends with a herbivore presenting child; Haru thinks it's just a little hilarious).

Excuse me while I rant about Haru for a moment:

Haru, arguably, started the entire series when Legoshi ‘met’ her in the first episode as she seemed to be his driving force to solving Tem’s murder (I’m not saying he wouldn’t have tried to look into it without her but his motives seemed to revolve around protecting her).

And! The Shishigumi would have kidnapped her regardless of her knowing Legoshi but I don’t know if Louis would have gone to the Black Market and killed Chief Lion if not for his fight with Legoshi over saving her (I don’t know this for sure but it seemed Louis was very conflicted about the mayor told him and actually saving her) which means it’s possible he would not have met the Shishigumi at all.

So Haru is (possibly) the reason why Legoshi started fighting for justice and why Louis started to actually care about carnivores (as a posed to hating them for their strength) and she just becomes irrelevant after she’s saved? What the heck?!

It’s annoying because Haru clearly wanted to be seen as an equal, not as a small herbivore who needed protection. Reducing her to a side character who only occasionally shows up but is somehow important enough for Legoshi to want to constantly protect her despite them having very limited time together since rescuing her completely undermines Haru as a character and how she actually wanted to be treated.

I’m not saying she should have been the ‘strong female character’ we see in movies lately but did she ever actually want to marry Legoshi? Aside from her working with plants, what else did she want for herself in life? What would she have said and done if she knew about Legoshi trying to capture a criminal for the beastar?

I really hope season 3 gives Haru more than the manga did. She deserves to be her own character and to stay relevant in the plot.

Ended up doing a doodle page of the beast form of my persona in an attempt at mimicking the Beastars style!

This got spurred on cause I realized how much Beastars really lead to a lot of my first twinges of species dysphoria and realizing how much I related and connected to the canine characters (ESPECIALLY Jack ohhh I could write an essay about him)
