...but at the slide of the tin towards him he manages to perk up a little. he picks it up and turns it gently in his hands.

"oh," he says, blinking, surprised. "thanks. thanks, kiddo.  you really didn't have to."

his gaze drifts to his bag, propped up against his desk chair, and his face lights up with an idea. with a faint smile he reaches into it, takes out a small orange lollipop and hands it to her.

"i, um... got these for my kid. but i have extras, so here. don’t want her having too much sugar...”
