hi! so, this might seem like a weird question, but i wanna start drawing characters from fandoms that i really like but i don't know how to combine that style with my own, so do you have any advice/strategies that might work? ty!! ^^ :]

It can be really tough to get started and daunting on deciding how much to be inspired art-wise by the source material or how to adapt your own art style to the source material! - Break your reference characters into basic shapes! This works really well as it allows you to not get too hung up on the style-specific details! shapes are translatable across all styles! - Doing screencap redraws can be useful if you're trying to find the characters 'voice’ in your own style. You'll have context, some nice posing / dynamics to reference and it takes a lot of the 'thinking' out of the piece so you can focus on raw drawing rather than the pressure of coming up with absolutely everything! - I think clarifying what it is about your own style that you love is key! I always call it your negotiables/non-negotiables. Is the way you draw eyes and noses killer? You love the way you construct faces? It could be a little more general ie: your use of varying shapes, lineweight or line of action! Once you've figured out your non-negotiables you can identify your negotiables! Does the fandom reference have really cool colours? There's no shame in folding that into your style! Does it have a really pleasing simple way of drawing the eyes? Incorporate that but keep the nice way that you draw ears or hands! Drawing is like have a big list of ingredients (your inspirations and references) and picking and choosing what you're going to use for each recipe (illustration...lol...okay bit of a tired metaphor but you get the idea) - Don't feel pressured to leap into a full finished illustration as your first drawing of a character! I think everyone does some secret heads-facing-left or 3/4 floating torsos in order to 'find' the character a little on the page The long of the short is that it’s practice! The more you draw, the more comfortable you'll get at combining the two and you’ll become more confident with what you see emerging on the page! hope this helps a bit! <3

Sooo recently I had one of the randomest blasts from the past and was inspired to finally watch through and finish the entirety of Kyou Kara Maoh which I had seen like 2 - 5 episodes of what must be 10/11 years ago with bad fansubs on YouTube... Oh God, those were the days😂 This was basically baby's first Isekai before I even knew what an Isekai was and before the market was completely oversaturated with an army of trashy isekai clones every season cough cough.

So for the maybe 5 people who still remember this decade old show, I hope you enjoy this random screencap redraw I did of the 'royal couple' out and about🤪😂.

Hello! I was wondering if u wouldn’t mind sharing a tutorial on how u making ur icons?

Hi sure thing! This is long and screenshot heavy so the tutorial is below the cut :)

First I find a shot of the character I want for the icon and take a screenshot of it. Typically I look for shots where the character isn't obstructed by anything/anyone and make sure nothing is cut off in the cap

Then I put the screencap into this website and it removes the background for me. This works pretty well for most images :)

Then I open the image with the removed background into photoshop and crop it into a square.

after cropping I resize the square to 200 x 200 pixels

after resizing I run my sharpening on the image so it becomes clearer.

After sharpening, I colour the image with curves and vibrance (as per my basic gif tutorial)

I then select all the layers and Convert to a Smart Object - this step isn't necessary but I just find it is easier for me.

After that I create a new layer underneath for the background and I use the gradient tool to add the background in.

^ that is the gradient tool - if you can't find it right click on the paint bucket and you should be able to switch to it.

The settings for the gradient look like this. To change the colour click on the coloured gradient bar.

After clicking the gradient you will get a dialog box like this:

basically just click on the little colour tabs on the gradient bar to change your colour. Typically with my icons I like to go from the colour to black or white.

For this icon I am doing pink :)

After you have picked your colour click the ok button

To draw you gradient click and drag a line on your canvas

This gives you comething like this:

I prefer the dark spot to be on the bottom of the icon so I'm going to redraw over it in the opposite direction

this gives us something that looks like this:

did it a couple of times to end up with this:

I like the colour background of my icon to match the clothes (I just think it's cute). So I'm going to use a bit of selective colour to make Gina's dress more pink.

So I create a selective colour layer (the one I've hovered over with the two triangles).

After making the layer I right click on it and select "Create Clipping Mask" so that the layer only changes the colours on Gina and not the background. Yow will know this has worked because there will be a little arrow pointing down.

Given Gina's dress is red I will be changing the reds in this image. When changing reds and yellow you have to be careful because they are the undertones of skin tones (why I chose this one as an example). As you can see below Gina's skin has changed with the dress and we obviously don't want that.

To fix this we use a layer mask so only the dress changes colour. The layer mask is the white square that shows up next to the layer name Selective Colour. We basically just grab a black paint brush and draw over the parts we don't want changed on the selective colour layer.

Then basically the icon is ready to be saved as a png for use!

If you want to make different colour versions of the same icon what I like to do is add another selective colour layer on top (no clipping mask this time) and change the colours again :)

So for example to turn this icon purple I adjusted the Magentas in the image like so:

To turn it more of a blue-purple I added another Selective Colour on top and adjusted the Magentas again like so:

and basically I just play around until I get the colours I like :)

You can also add textures on top of the background if you like - typically I will just google something like "grunge icon texture" or "cute icon doodles" or whatever I might want to put on top and find one I like and use it.

So I copy and paste it and put it on top of our gradient layer and adjust the blending mode of the layer as I see fit. This is the texture on top without the blend mode adjusted.

Here I've changed it to Exclusion, which I like - but usually I just play around with the blend modes until I find one that looks good

Here's a heart one I found and put on. For this one I used the magic wand tool to remove the white bits of the background and then set it to Exclusion.

And that's my basic process - I hope it makes sense :)

I don't think this completely fits as propaganda, but I saw this being pointed out in the Erina vs Suzi bracket and it's true: Most of the erasure people does when it comes to Erina comes from the jonadio fans and not the jonawagon or jonaeriwagon fans. Most jonawagon and erijonawagon shippers are chill about her even if they sometimes fail to give her more spotlight, meanwhile I've seen jonadio fans talking shit nonstop about Erina, calling her boring and basically replacing her with Dio every chance they get even in the screencap redraws some of them have made where they draw Dio over her.

A lot other people also gloss over that Dio assaulted Erina and make her act like it was not a big deal just so they can ship jonaeridio. There's a lot of unfair and mistaken slander aimed at jonaeriwagon and its fans in the propaganda that was submitted for that bracket but it's actually jonadio (a step-cest ship) and joneridio where all the bigger Erina erasure and mistreatment comes from.

One of the posts there also made another big point: Not all polycules must be the type where everyone dates everyone to be valid, and jonaeriwagon seems to fall more into the type of polycule where it's Jonathan dating both Erina and Speedwagon. The friendship between Erina and Speedy shouldn't be taken as less valid than the romantic relationship they may have with Jonathan, and that's also an issue I've noticed when it comes to how people perceive some types of polycules as well as in the way people give romances more importance than platonic relationships when that shouldn't be the case.

The propaganda that focused on Jonadio was yucky disgusting (as in op talked about shipping them) so I wasn't going to use it. It ended up unbalanced because of it.

I've been scrolling last night liking any Laserhawk post I thought was either wholesome, funny, generally nice, or was something I've seen around on Google or Pinterest already and I figured I'd share to my fellow members in the Laserhawk community one of my ocs for a fan project I currently have a prequel Q&A for (the project basically follows the show's plot but in my ocs' perspective as citizens mostly in the background) [FT. Some others for some context/mentions]

Her name is Rosea (I have yet to confirm ages for any of my ocs in the project but most of them are adults) she is a mushroom hybrid who was raised with her brother Robert with her aunt and uncle who work with a friend of hers at the diner (the one shown near the end of the show) she's a swordfighter (based on Scarlet from Brawlhalla even though I've never played the game so apologies to Brawlhalla fans if Rosea doesn't have any similar traits to Scarlet her design is based on multiple skins from the game that I looked up on Google)

For context the first mentioned friend of Rosea and Robert is Sheila- a fish hybrid is distressed about how she's never had a long lasting relationship {all of the relationships she's had were short lasting and kinda crappy} meanwhile Rosea has never shown any interest in pursuing a relationship with anybody mainly out of focus for her swordfighting in case of an event where she would need to protect her friends and family (I don't have a good refrence in my artstyle to reveal Sheila yet but I do have a picrew refrence to share with you all)

Her design is inspired by Ariel from the Little Mermaid (The animated one from Disney not Live action also from Disney- but if I were to make a human design for her, her skin tone might be like the Live Action one) She's also a huge fan of Rayman's show and wants to have of show of her own one day, to start she decides to provide a sort of phone hotline service at the diner to provide entertainment for patrons who are there by having her and her friends respond to any questions or comments for whoever calls the hotline (thus the Q&A)

Three is the magic number but can we go for four? Most of this is the same as previous posts - if it ain’t broke don’t fit it!

Also as a polite reminder I am only one person running this (and the Secret Santa this year). It may take me a little time to reply to emails/comments please be patient.

Our basic guidelines are the same as Zine 3 which where mostly the same as Zine 2:

This will be:

A Digital Zine containing content created by the fans for the fans

A 100% Free Zine

Preferred Language is English

You may notice I run this very differently to other zines as there is no sign up period, and no check in times. I have a very free-reign management style - just submit work before the deadline.  I’d rather people have that extra time to work on their pieces

Anyone can submit regardless of age or skill level - this is not a job application - just follow the guidelines and email in your work

Submission can be Fan Writing (poems, fan fiction, character analysis, eassys etc), Fan Art, or even photos of your Entrapdak IRL content (cosplays, fancrafts etc)!  You can submit an older work that you have published online previously if you wish - or even update a work you submitted to the last Zine! Just have fun!

Other She-Ra characters will be allowed but Entrapdak is to be the core element.

This includes fan fiction, analysis eassys, poetry or whatever else you’d like to write about.  I would ask this content to be between 1k-10k words in length, it’s not a big deal if the writing is over 10k or even if it’s 20k - write whatever your story needs. If you’d like to write Chapters then please do!

Written work can be emailed in the body of text, sent as pdf attachment or as a link to a Google Doc - I can work with any of those

Fan Art guidelines:

Fan art can include rough sketches, screencap redraws, comics (appox 1-10 pages length), coloured sketches or full colour pieces. Fan art can be in the digital or traditional medium.  Traditional fan art can either be submitted as a photo or scanned, which ever you prefer.

Preferred sizing for Digital art is as follows, my aim to to have everything on International (UK) A4 paper sizing where possible*

PNG is preferred but I will understand if you only wish to send a workable JPEG

Please make sure to include your Social Media contacts and which name or username you wish to be identified by.  If no social media contacts are provided and you have submitted previously I will use those details

I will reply to confirm I have received the content and that’s it I take care of the rest!

Please note I DO NOT KEEP any records of anyone’s email addresses.  When the Zine is out I batch delete all emails sent to the email address and I keep no further records of these address. I respect your email privacy at all times.

FAQs:

Why no Application form?

I don’t want anyone to feel like they are applying for a job here, this is supposed to be fun.

Will there be Guest Artists or Guest Writers?

If they apply sure, I’m not advertising who applies to be a part of this Zine until it’s ready to be published.  I don’t want anyone to feel intimidated just because a certain person has chosen to participate.

Can I submit more than one piece?

If you’d like to certainly!  If you’d like to submit up to three pieces of art and 3 fan writings, sure go for it! I’m certainly not going to stop anyone having a good time, this is supposed to be fun after all!

May I post a preview of my work to my Followers?

Sure! Bonus points if you link them to this post so that they can take part if they wish

May I post my work online?

I would ask if you could please wait until the issue featuring your work is published. Of course this does not apply if you are chosen to submit and older work - in this case may I ask that you edit or add to said post to mention the work was also used in the Zine?

Is this only for people with a [insert certain social media account here]?

Nope, this is for anyone who wants to take part.  I only ask for a social media contact so that others who like you work for the Zine may follow you on your preferred social media platform.

Can I send an update to a piece?

Of course! Just let me know, send it before the deadline and I’ll update on my end

Can I send another piece on later?

Of course that’s not a problem!

Ah I can’t get this done before the deadline - it’s almost ready!!!  I need another day!!!!

Contact me, either through the submitting email over via my Tumblr or Twitter DMs or just emailing the email address. There is extra time allowed for an extension for anyone who needs it with no questions asked to why they need it.  Simply get in contact, I'll put you name on the Extension List and that extra time is yours.  Once all names come in (or the deadline is reached) I will finish up my work and get the zine out. I will not be sending out any further reminder (because I’ll forget sorry)

Why don’t you make the Extension time public?

Because I can’t finish up the zine if extra stuff comes in at the last second - I get jittery enough with a deadline so this is how I manage my stress

Sure why not? If the community still wants them I’ll keep compiling them every six months.  I’ve seen what us nerds can do!
