i saw a post that said that Crowley coded people are usually Aziraphale stans and Aziraphale coded people are Crowley stans and i laughed a little cuz like “hah that’s funny and kinda true”
but the more i think about the more it’s hitting me how accurate that statement is to me. i consider myself a more Crowley coded person because i related to him a lot more than i related to Aziraphale.
i related to how he shows love and his relationship with authority and his endless desire to ask questions and learn and his fierce defensiveness and protectiveness of the people (or singular being) he loves and his absolute adoration of the world and humanity and his undeniable optimism shrouded in a veil of cynicism. i don’t think i can articulate just how much all of those things hit home for me.
like Crowley is me in so many ways and i am him.
and yet. who am i out here defending like my life depends on it? Aziraphale. i’m not writing long ass metas about why Crowley’s decisions make sense. no, i’m writing those long ass metas about why Aziraphale isn’t really wrong and about how his decisions make perfect sense and about how he doesn’t deserve the hate.
anyways i don’t know what to do with this information now that i have it but it sure is something for me to think about

It's actually so sad how Aziraphale always tries to do the right thing and every time ends up suffering for it.
In s1 he stays to save the Earth and let's go of Crowley, while going against Heaven and risking his own destruction.
In s2 he sees Gabriels state and decides to help him. The person who tried to annihilate and destroy him, as well as treating him horribly for millenia, and he still helped him, going against Heaven AND Hell and risking his own life.
In the Job episode, he goes against Heavens orders to save his children and risks Falling. Something I think went very overlooked in the fandom.
He literally almost died to get Crowley out of a sticky situation with Mrs H. And ends up traumatising both himself and Crowley in the process.
And the goddamn finale. He gives up a happy life with Crowley to save Heaven, the place he should be staying as far away from as possible, and in the process putting his very existence in danger.
This is an angel whose love for humans, the Earth, and life in general runs so deep he's left with absolutely zero regard for his own safety. He is THE angel of the Eastern Gate. His very function is to protect. And he will protect the things he loves until his last breath.

I also haven't seen anyone talk about Aziraphale and Crowley's dance or routine of spats and breakups and reconciliations and second chances, which we talked about in season 1. There was always an offer from Crowley, a rejection by Aziraphale, time apart, and then a second outreach from Crowley which is then accepted. Even though they don't communicate, they have this pattern, this unspoken language, which they adhere to pretty well.
And we see it again with the smaller fight at the beginning of season 2, over how to handle naked amnesiac Gabriel showing up. Aziraphale says my way or the highway, Crowley storms off, Crowley storms back in, makes a ritualistic apology, Aziraphale accepts the apology, they move on together as a team.
(I actually really liked seeing the little moment where they're trying to figure out how to hide Gabe, where Aziraphale suggests the half miracle each, and Crowley considers this and then agrees, that could work, and falls into line, shoulder to shoulder with Aziraphale, let's do this together. It's this little glimpse into how they actually do work together as a team.)
With the big fight / love confession at the end, Aziraphale has zero time to process any of what's going on -- escaping the wrath of Heaven & Hell yet again, this bonkers offer out of left field from the Metatron, Crowley breaking *all* their rules and actually communicating? in words? about feelings? Like, this is A Lot, and we *know* Az needs time. He doesn't make decisions quickly, he can't handle when things go too fast. Even without the millennia of religious / family trauma, he would not have handled this situation well.
The pattern has been broken, and creating a new pattern of behavior is hard and requires intentionality and presence. Aziraphale does not have the opportunity to choose to be intentional and present, because it's thrown at him all at once, with the urgency to decide Right Now.

Apply this to Aziraphale how you will, but as an autistic person, I REALLY fell for Metatron's kind old man act. I didn't notice the subtle manipulation, like giving Aziraphale coffee and saying "I've ingested things in my time" to show that he's different from the food-hating, earth-hating angels. I didn't notice him taking on Aziraphale's speech mannerisms before turning away and scowling. It was only after reading meta and rewatching twice that I was like WOAH I didn't even see that.
I can see that heaven's system is screwed up, but I literally thought "Metatron's not like the other angels." I trusted his kindness, especially given that he wanted Aziraphale to run heaven, obviously the best angel for the job. I didn't consider that he wanted to appoint him because he knows Aziraphale is powerful and has stopped heaven and hell before.
I was right along with Aziraphale when all of this went down, agreeing with him when he didn't want the job ("where would I get my coffee?") and then seeing the appeal when Metatron said he could run heaven from earth WITH Crowley. They get to keep living the life they carved out for each other AND Aziraphale can fix the corruption in heaven? I love seeing kind-hearted characters fixing broken things, and I wanted him to fix the system.
As for Crowley becoming an angel again, I didn't really think of it as changing him. He's just Crowley, and he'd keep being Crowley. He's good already. I saw it as heaven offering to right their wrong because he never deserved to fall in the first place, and they wouldn't let someone they believed is evil back in, right? I trusted their judgment of Aziraphale and Crowley. I didn't consider that of COURSE Crowley wouldn't want to go back there. Why would he??
So when Aziraphale finally told him about the offer, I was hoping he would agree. It's important, they could change things! Metatron is claiming to give Aziraphale the reins. Crowley and Aziraphale for once are allowed to be together, and Aziraphale was so ready to not hold back in their relationship. There'd be no reason to deny it or go slow, it's obvious that their love is mutual.
It wasn't a surprise that Crowley said no, and deep down, Aziraphale knew why, but he didn't understand. Crowley and Aziraphale weren't seeing how the other saw it (that Aziraphale WANTS to be together. He wants to make heaven a better place, but Crowley believes it'll never happen, and heaven means to manipulate him). They truly would be the perfect team if they were in charge.
But the problem: that's not what Metatron or heaven intends. "Give me coffee or give me death" meant that if Aziraphale didn't accept the offer, he would've been destroyed. Metatron knew he'd accept, and based on the glare he gave Crowley, I don't think Crowley was ever really in his plan. Metatron will try to use Aziraphale and his power to end the world, and he has no idea he's a pawn. He fell for Metatron's apparent kindness and got swept away with the idea that he and Crowley wouldn't have to hide.
It's heartbreaking because I AM frustrated with Aziraphale, but I know why he chose heaven. There's trauma underlying his actions as well, and he didn't need MAGIC coffee (sorry, I'm mean about coffee theory) to fall hook, line, and sinker for what Metatron was selling. He loves Crowley so much, but if his plans to change heaven worked, he'd be saving the entire world from destruction.
People are still like "NO NO NO, how could he leave Crowley? He must've been hypnotized" when he is putting the WORLD first. That's not to say he won't regret it immediately, miss Crowley the entire time, or even change his mind, but it all happened so fast, and Crowley seemingly gave out on him. He refused, said "good luck", and started to leave. They didn't communicate with each other. I don't think Aziraphale was leaving him forever, but he thought "I HAVE to do this". Crowley is right, but Aziraphale can't see it another way.
Now he has to try his best to change heaven. In the end, he'll see the mistake he made and owe an apology to Crowley, but he has to figure it out on his own. After it's all said and done, it could be the last time they hold back from each other. Going through an angst arc of THIS magnitude would be worth it, and Neil Gaiman is a genius

i’m seeing some speculation about aziraphale’s line “nothing lasts forever” and how some argue he was clearly lying, and while i’ll say that there’s no chance that he meant it the way crowley interpreted it (as in, something along the lines of “this relationship/life together was never going to last”), i’d like to offer up an alternate meaning for that line, especially considering how it directly follows “you can’t leave this bookshop.”
y’all know the lyrics to “budapest” by george ezra?
yeah.

“aziraphale and crowley’s relationship is one sided and toxic!”
have you never met a service top? u can’t even fathom the joy that crowley gets from doing things for aziraphale or the love that it takes for aziraphale to ask? that’s very embarrassing for u. keep that information to yourself

if i see one more person try to claim aziraphale doesn’t love crowley as much as crowley loves aziraphale i will throw hands.
say it with me: just because they show & express their love for each other differently doesn’t mean one of them loves the other more

I've just come across the information that there are people out there who now hate Aziraphale after s2. Not just dislike, but actually HATE.
And I'm just. Hhuhh?? WHAT?
Literally HOW?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LOOK AT HIM
HOW CAN YOU HATE HIM
HOOW???
If Aziraphale has 1000 defenders I'm one of them. If he has 100 I'm one of them. If he has 1 I'm that person. If he has zero then I'm dead and haunting the people who hate him.
I will literally make it my life mission to defend this angel if I have to. If I have one purpose in life, then it will be to excuse any wrong he's ever done. And it will be an easy job because it's a very short list. He has done nothing wrong. Ever. He can be stupid sometimes but I swear to god if I see anyone hating him I'm going to lose my fucking mind. He's precious, and kind, and wonderful, and brilliant, and anyone who thinks otherwise should never speak again. I will devote every living breathing minute of my conscious self as an Aziraphale apologist if I must.
(Oh and Crowley would dislike you for hating Aziraphale. Just saying.)

The reason I don't stan the coffee theory as much anymore, is because Aziraphale has religious trauma. Poor angel was being terrorised with the fact that if he does anything wrong, he'll become a demon. And when Aziraphale was finally free, finally allowed to be who he is, not caring if he does any mistakes, he was given the chance to change the place he felt alone and miserable, for the better. People keep calling him an idiot for going back to Heaven, but Aziraphale got only 4 years of this freedom, meanwhile he was there for 6000 years, and even before that. He's had a hard life. People keep talking about Crowley having a hard life, which ngl, he has, (falling for just asking questions and hanging out with the wrong people, and also being a literal demon in literal Hell and pinning for 6000 years for his angel bsf) but they completely gloss over the fact that Aziraphale is equally just as traumatised. Let the angel do mistakes, ok? Let him make bad decisions because of all this.
