"Hey, what is your favourite romance trope?"
"It's boss x secretary. Especially in kdramas, cdramas and thai dramas."
"Oh, wow, how patriotic of you. Do you also believe in the American Dream and that once you'll be a hard worker, you'll be compensated through a great work place, a great romantic life and later on become a stay-at-home-parent?"
"Oh, no. I'm just autistic and relate to the heavily implied autistic boss with his
-PTSD and/or childhood trauma
-perfectionism
-needs food prepared and his house/office cleaned in the "right way" and can easily get offended/compulsive if that is not done (to the point of fireing employees right on the spot)
-forming a sort of romantic relationship and/or friendship with people who respect and/or care to keep the "cleanliness"/compulsive sorting of things the way he wants them (the secretary)
-often shows affection through gift giving
-often times doesn't like being touched/needs his personal space
-is disliked even by people close to him/he has worked with all his life
-unable to read emotions or social cues
-easily deceived/doesn't spot lies easily
-shows almost no emotion or has problems finding the right way to express them
-no friends/troublesome relationship with family members
-see his partner more as "cute" than as "sexy" (especially in kdrama, cdrama), implying a bigger romantic than sexual interest in the person
-seems mature but has "childish" personality traits or values
-is seen as narcistic
-known to be gifted/intelligent from a young age and seeing other kids as immature/hard to understand/too emotional and has problems connecting with them, which leads them to spend more time with adults from a young age

“Well, Dougie Seeger’s [non-verbal] autistic. He didn’t care. His heart wasn’t broken.” - Dr. Temperance Brennan on Bones
Bullshit.
First, I know this was on the air in 2009, and at the time Asperger’s was still an acceptable diagnosis (or “high functioning autism), but that doesn’t make the statement any less inappropriately stereotypical or hurtful.
Side note: Dr. Asperger was a Nazi and a eugenicist. The diagnosis was removed from the DSM-5 and is no longer used. Some people (ie mostly white males who were the predominant group to get this diagnosis) do still call themselves “Aspis” but they are perpetuating the ableist and harmful Nazi supremacist ideals the diagnosis was born from. It is largely shunned by the autistic community.
The truth is that many autistic people feel very deeply. Overwhelmingly so… which can lead to autistic meltdowns and burnout. The reason it’s called a spectrum disorder is because it’s a variation of traits that are experienced and expressed in a myriad of ways.
Also, this notion that non-verbal autistic people can’t express themselves is major bullshit. They may express themselves in a way others can’t understand. They may have different ways to communicate other than through language.
I know it’s just a show and I know it aired a long time ago but these are the very harmful stereotypes and media portrayals that have left me unable to get a formal diagnosis as an adults, and left others without the supports that they need even if they do have a formal diagnosis.
I can’t stand Sean from “The Good Doctor” for the same reason. The stereotypes and naivety he portrays are the actual worst because it perpetuates the stigma that autistic people are clueless about social norms and emotionless drones. We are absolutely capable of learning social norms. We absolutely feel just like allistic (non-autistic) people
The more I learn about myself and my autism, the angrier these types of things make me.

being into sherlock holmes is so stupid like. yeah here's my blorbo, you don't know him. you think you do, but unless you've systematically fallen in love with him through the personal writings of his retired army doctor best friend you really don't. yeah. he's one of the most popular and well known characters in the world. I have interacted with at least 60% of the current fans. hey do you think he associates the sounds of waterfalls with death? do you think he'll ever get over that? I won't. good talk

The fact that the only autistic characters in media usually only work in jobs related to their special interests is yet another extension of the harmful idea Hans Asperger and the like introduced that autistic people are only worthy if they can work. Autistic characters in media are like "this character's special interest is forensics, so they work in crime scene investigation" or "this character's special interest is medicine so they work in medicine" when in real life most autistic people's jobs have nothing to do with their special interest. It's just not realistic. It's just this idea that autistic people and their interests are only valuable if they can successfully contribute to capitalism........I hate it.

Biologist Annihilation and Laios Dungeonmeshi most specialest characters ever for being realistic depictions of having a special interest in biology as an autistic person thank you. Sometimes you really are so intense about organism mechanics that it makes you transspecies. Less ''this is my one well-known animal I know first-page-of-Google fun facts about'' bio freak representation and more ''I love this ecosystem I'm part of it now'' bio freak representation

A lot of the time when people bring up Bart Allen as being super autistic coded, they're bringing it up in conjuction with the rest of YJ (which, yes, I love autistic friendship) but sometimes I just wanna talk about Bart Allen.
I wanna talk about the kid who doesn't understand he's getting bullied and managed to be friends with everyone because of it. I wanna talk about the kid who is so bad at holding a conversation everyone thinks he's some sort of brooding asshole. I wanna talk about the kid who KNOWS that the older, more popular kids talk to him and dare him to do stupid stuff because "of course Bart will do it" and does it anyway because he likes making people laugh. I wanna talk about the kid who knows he's doing something wrong socially but he doesn't know what and wants nothing more than to fix it. I wanna talk about the kid who knows he's different but still thinks the rest of the world is the problem. I wanna talk about the kid who's so smart and so brave but everyone only sees him as some mess-up idiot. I wanna talk about the emotional kid who got bullied for being robotic and unemotional because allistic people can't grasp what his world looks like. I wanna talk about the kid who wouldn't know sarcasm from truth. I wanna talk about the kid who's low-empathy but does everything he can to be compassionate. I wanna talk about the kid who's surrounded by people, but still feels so alone because no one else understands his world.
Sometimes I just wanna talk about Bart Allen.

My mom, after spending an extended weekend with my dad's old college classmates and their families: It's so weird that all of these very weird, intelligent and structured men who got their masters in engineering in the late 1980s have sons that are all autistic and daughters who all have mood disorders.
Me: Yeah, very weird. Why could that be?

Ok, so I know Nimona's gender fluid and the whole shape shifting thing is a queer allegory.
BUT. (Don't worry)
I also think it’s an allegory of neurodivergency and disability! And I wanna talk about it:
To me, the « I wouldn't die die but I sure wouldn't be living » discussion feels very reminiscent of autistic stimming and masking, masking being explained here as the constant state of « that second before you sneeze ».
With that in mind, Nimona and Ballister's discussion in the train hits a lot closer to home for ND and disabled people in general because Ballister says « it would be easier for you » which isn’t actually true and shows how a lot of the world views disability. For people your disability is completely fine until they see it, they say they are disability allies but will shame you if you start stimming etc…
I think Nimona’s reaction to what Ballister said also shows that she is used to that kind of rethoric, she tries to lead him to the true answer « normal? » you’re normal for people if they can’t see your disability, « easier for who? » easier for him, easier for society because if they don’t see it they can ignore it. At the end of that conversation he doesn’t understand though and even think he is a hero for it « a lot of people aren’t as accepting as me » except what he does is actually the bare minimum, treating disabled people like actual people is the bare minimum whether you can see their disability or not!
At the end, Ballister understands that he was in the wrong and goes on to actually see Nimona as a person, as who she is « I see you ». And theoretically/utopically it’s the same for the kingdom’s people BUT it took the literal sacrifice of Nimona’s life for them to start treating her like a person which again should be the BARE MINIMUM. I think it is especially sad that it’s the way our society works as well, disabled people, queer people etc… shouldn’t have to earn the right to be treated as a person.
Thanks for reading all that, byeeee!

Part of why autistic representation in media is so bad is that, especially when the character is a kid, none of the parents and grandparents show any sign of neurodivergence in the slightest, when in reality, this is very different. It's always that 'The odd one out'-trope, the 'black sheep' of the family, it's presented almost as if autism just randomly 'infected' the family and I hate that. And then the movie ends with 'Oh but we love the child anyway'. YES Veronica you BETTER DO? Wtf? Trash
