I arrived about half a year before Tink! I stayed for a couple of years actually :) I wanted to get through the major movies and what I remembered from the books so I was there for a while!

Funniest memory... oh gosh I'm not sure... There was this one time when a new water talent fairy (her name was Cordelia! very cute and nice) had some trouble getting into the flow of things (hah) and she ended up completely soaking Rosetta hahah She made us all walk until her wings dried and she wouldn't come near the river for weeks after that 😭

My DR mostly followed the movies and occasionally had things from the books! Like all the book fairies that weren't in the movies were there and I remember specific book/comic plots (like the art contest with Bess, Rani's entire story {very sad :(}, and the issue with Silvermist and the "cursed" ladybug).

When I was a kid in my CR, I believe my absolute favorite was Silvermist! But I know I liked all of them too :) In my DR, I was closest to Sil and Iridessa!

Things felt big!! It probably would've felt normal to me if I scripted out my memories but I didn't do that with this DR so everything felt very big. It was kinda scary at first ngl!! It def took some adjusting to feel normal there (after a while it gets better and it does start to feel more normal).

I occasionally looked for lost things with Tink! Grossest thing was a condom (i didn't explain it to her...) and the coolest thing was a knife that was in surprisingly good condition!

Tink never bothered me that much! There were definitely times (especially when she first got there) that I got worried about her or annoyed with her actions but it was never that bad. And since I knew she would fix everything and act nicer, we were pretty chill! Tinkerbell wasn't the first fairy that had trouble adjusting to her talent so it wasn't a big deal with other fairies either :)

Favorite part of being a fairy... honestly? Probably flying! I know that seems like a basic answer but I love flying hahah

I have been to the Mainland! We actually went over there for every season change so I got pretty used to it :) And speaking of changing seasons!! My favorite was winter to spring and summer to autumn!

I have met Queen Clarion :) She's very nice! She feels... warm? I don't really know how to describe it but when you're talking to her it feels like talking to a mother figure (in a good way). She's just very nice and calming to be around :)

We didn't wear one color per se... but your talent almost gives you preferences? That was actually one of the things that everyone talked about (we all had different theories). You absolutely could wear widely different colors but it always feels unnatural when you do it (fairies with talents that didn't correspond with nature felt much more freedom). My theory is that it's some form of ingrained camouflage...

YES there were stupid talents 💀 It was highly discouraged to make fun of fairies for their talents (it's not like we can choose) but it definitely happened. Some of the nature talent fairies were also really mean to fairies who didn't have nature related talents :( which wasn't cool, i'd recommend scripting that out because they can get really nasty 😭

The Neverbeast is adorable 🥺 I was much chiller with him since I remembered the movie but I'll be honest seeing him up close for the first time was a little scary! He's very big compared to us 💀 I also changed the reality a little cause I didn't want him to go to sleep forever (or for the next 1,000 years) :( So instead, Gruff woke up every year! It only happened once a year (the storm thing happened every 1,000 years though), near summertime usually and it was always a big celebration!! All the fairies love Gruff :')

Pixie dust can be super inconvenient if you do a lot of flying, which like... most fairies do but whatever. I did script that it was a lot better in my DR though! So usually one bag of pixie dust can last for an entire week instead of just one day. I also scripted that we typically had an abundance of pixie dust so we never had to deal with running out and only rationed to make things fair!

I based my home on that one lotus home in the game! The inside was inspired by a couple of different pictures I found on Pinterest. My house was on top of a lake 🤭

Pixie Hollow itself is pretty big (in comparison to us at least) and covers a very wide area. However, that's mostly due to each season having a section! If the entire place was condensed, it'd probably be equatable to a small town. But because everything is so separated it feels more like a big city!

How many fairies... oh goodness.... In just Pixie Hollow, I'd say there are around 2,000 fairies at any given time (sometimes that decreases/increases depending on what's going on in the human world).

Working is definitely not the only thing to do hahah There are a lot of random shops and places to eat. Tons of outside/sports activities to do (park-like areas as well) and even theatres! My DR had this one place that was kind of like an amusement park? But yeah, our work/life balance was actually pretty good! The most challenging part was the schedule since when we worked was based on nature and not like... specific hours. Some fairies were luckier in that regard, but some weren't so lucky (some of the light fairies worked really late hours due to fireflies).

The food is amazing!! Def one of the best parts about living in Pixie Hollow. The cooking and baking talent fairies are literally phenomenal. They get so creative and since everything is super fresh, all the food tastes good. Like I don't think I had a single meal there that was bad? Any food that goes bad just gets used as fertilizer so we never felt like we had to use it. It literally felt like eating at a 5 star restaurant every day!! Def recommend shifting there 😌

And don't worry! I don't mind the questions hahah If anything, they help me reminisce about my DRs :)

🤝 critiquing the thing but enjoying it .. i get you!! honestly idk when you last watched it (after it got cancelled after s2?) and i will say that like. i was watching it for the first time with a friend who was rewatching + he didn't remember much abt them either. but the relationship just has. dubious foundation (imo) that does Not get addressed 😭 i won't say anything on the actual plot of their relationship but don't be worried 😭 im more talking about the state of the writing for both characters because it never seems to get proper resolutions or depth where it desperately needs it

i really enjoy the concept of yja most of the time (s1, most of 2, most of 4) i just wish the writers didnt bite off more than they could handle because i stare at the writing sometimes. that being said. the middle of season 4 is some of the most fun i think i had its genuinely so so good hehe. hope u have fun with it when u get there.. the state of the overall writing for yja i think acts like an inverse bell curve. theres still good to be found tho :]

ANON OMFG u do not even know the floodgates u just unleashed w this ask (im assuming st is a given) so settle back grab some popcorn and get Ready for some Rambling 💃 in no particular order (bc they’re all so good and i can’t choose):

THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE!! omfg i could talk for hours and hours and hours abt this show (and i have) but EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS SO !! the storyline is so well thought out, like from the very first episode everything is set up Perfectly. and i looove a good character-driven show, and the way this show is split up w episodes for each character and how everything comes together in the end,, oh my god. like EVERYTHING ABT IT and iconic episodes 6 and 7 right after one another BROKE ME i swear i would give anything to go back and watch it for the first time again. i love how it’s a subversion on a typical haunted house story and the reveal at the end literally rewired my brain in a way that NOTHING ELSE EVER HAS !! in my top 3 shows of all time probably bc the perfect mixture of horror and drama and mystery and emotional catharsis is unmatched, the storytelling and cinematography and that One Rly Good Jumpscare (iykyk) anyways . before i give any spoilers for ppl who haven’t watched it please do urself the biggest favor of ur life and GO WATCH IT RN

new girl is and always will be my #1 comfort show. like there’s nothing even more i have to say, but i can’t recall a single bad episode in this entire show. i have it on in the background for EVERYTHING like doing dishes, cleaning my room, cooking, getting ready. it’s so fucking funny and honestly so so so iconic, zooey deschanel was BORN to play this role. like it’s cast so perfectly, the humor is spot on and has the best timing, the characters r so chefs kiss and AHHH idk idk what else to say it’s just so unmatched in this category for me i just (YELLS)

ATTACK ON TITAN !! OMG this is definitely also in my top 3 shows! i remember watching the first season back in 2015 when it came out and i think it got continued (the show not the manga) a couple years ago so i got back into it, but i didn’t finish the whole thing until last winter and WOW. let me just tell u i think this is one of the most incredible shows of all time, EVER. the way that the entire entire entire story was planned out from the very first episode (also i haven’t read the manga so just know i’m talking abt things in terms of the show!) is so astounding bc it took so many years and has like 4 seasons so just knowing the creator was that thorough from the beginning is SOOOO !!! like i rewatched it over the summer and there’s stuff in the FIRST EPISODE that correlates to stuff in the last season, which was made like a full 7 years later?? and it’s just so cool watching the storyline of the show come together, different characters and their roles changing (jean solos everyone fr), some of the best redemption arcs/if not The best vs. the best villain arc i’ve Ever seen, how there’s so many plot twists but none are tacky! and the worldbuilding is INSANE!! like ik this is probably the most basic of animes to be into bc i haven’t rly gotten into many others but it’s popular for good reason and deserves every bit of its hype fr . like there’s this 2/3 episode arc in season 3 that is just . like actually unparalleled by any other show for me (except for maybe ep6/7 of hill house hehe) ANYWAYS if u haven’t watched it . do it now NOWWWWWWWWWW NOW!!

haha im going to my friend's prom! she went to mine and im going to hers. ngl her's was kinda more fun bc of venue 😭 IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN MINE it rly gave that royalty au vibes i got so many pictures 😁 and also finally met her friends so it was fun!

my last week of school was nice and chill i was mostly scrambling to finish my chem final and just getting people to sign my yearbook! i got this set of colourful pens i got on my birthday that i never got to use and i finally used them so my yearbook is very colourful which i like bc there's so many msgs and having the different colours rly helps with reading them 😭

i unfortunately got covid so i had to miss my graduation 😭 i completely recovered now but i was rly bummed out for a couple of days, esp on the day of. i retraced my days and figured out by timelines that i contracted it on my last day of school and thats so 💀 one of my friends said the school left me a parting gift 👹 apparently some people with covid went to grad anyways but i didnt want to be one of those people even though i rly rly wanted to go anyways

my clubbed performed a dance! i also had a short solo towards the end and it was jusy rly fun so at least there's that good memory left from my school ig ansjdffkv hehe thank you for the virtual flowers 💓

and i did listen to bts' comeback! i was an army for a while previously so seeing them always flickers an old flame in me even though i dnt "stan" them anymore. all the new songs are great! i love the vibes of run bts but searching it on google is a hassle bc theres their show and also their song from hyyh era 😭

Jesse Cromeans Headcanons

- first things first, the is mf is bi. i don’t make the rules. this guy swf doesn’t care about gender but if u ask him about his sexuality he will either refuse to answer (he probably feels he’s too old for labels) or start askin if ur interested

- idk why but im convinced he's half or a quarter puerto rican. i just feel like his mom was puerto rican and married his dad when she was really young. she died when he was young and primarily lived with his father's side of the family. after his mother's death he lost contact with her side of the family so he doesn't feel a strong connection with his puerto rican heritage. i doubt jesse cares much either. i dont think he's ever felt much of a connection or had much of an interest in learning about his own heritage or family history.

- jesse doesn’t rly like animals, especially ones that shed. he doesn’t like them and they don’t like him, it’s a mutual understanding. he also can’t be bothered to take care of any animal no matter how minimal their care is. he does not want to meet ur dog and i can promise u ur dog does not want to meet him.

- his eyes are a slightly orangey brown w warm undertones,, theyre light enough that you can see all the lil details of his iris w/o any sunlight,,

- a lil more about his eyes ! considering he was stabbed in the eye while on the “job”, he likely didn’t have any time to properly treat it or receive medical treatment for it until after his incident,, obviously that means the eye’s not of any use anymore but i also think it’s likely that the chemicals from the glue on his mask that melted his face off also damaged that bad eye beyond repair,, this leads me to believe he wears a glass eye ! typically when i draw his bad eye it’s a dull grey but that’s just an artistic preference,, tbh he probably has a whole collection of various colors ranging from natural to more fantastical,, i also think he used to have perfect 20/20 vision before but w those glue chemicals being near his eyes he was probably blind for a lil while as he healed from his injuries,, i wouldn’t be surprised if all the blunt force trauma he received from getting hit w a bat damaged his eyesight even more. he probably got laser eye surgery to correct it.

- man definitely has tattoos. im not sure if he'd have full sleeves but i can imagine him gettin em in the future if he doesn't already have em (especially to feel better about his appearance and feel some sense of control over the way he looks). what im absolutely sure of is that he has his whole back inked up. i wanna incorporate his tattoos into my drawings of him but i need to design em first.

- another thing about his appearance- he definitely has his own gym at home. before the incident he likely had his own trainer but i doubt he has one now,, probably trains on his own so he doesnt have to show his face.

- keeps his home neat and tidy, but has house maids do all the dirty work adn heavy lifting for him. all he has to do is keep everything the same until they come back the next week. he also has one special cleaner who gets rid of any blood stains and bloody bandages from wounds. the other maids don't know anything about his less legal activities.

- he never invites one night stands to his home and always throws parties at a separate location. he owns multiple properties and never reveals his home location for both privacy and safety reasons. this was especially true for when his wife was still alive.

- he has a special morning and night routine for his face and its time consuming

- jesse has alopecia and hes had it for as long as he can remember. it's spread more and more over the years so at a young age he just decided to start shaving and waxing his whole body. after he started participating in less than legal activities he found being hairless to be pretty useful. for this reason he got the hair on some parts of his body (primarily arms, hands, and legs) permanantly removed thru laser hair removal. it makes it harder to trace any evidence back to him thru hair.

The Bear’s Famous Invasion of Sicily

Movie, 2019, Italian/French

9/10, a delightful little movie with amazing visuals. It feels like an animated picture book.

One of those “plot is in the title” media! I had never heard of this before but was heavily recommended it by my family members, who all loved it! It’s a sweet story, nothing groundbreaking but the unique colorful visual style alone makes it worth it.

The Castle of Cagliostro

Movie, 1979, Japanese

10/10. Reminded me of all the books i loved reading as a child

I assume its because it’s so old and the art style and themes are so different that it gets little to no love compared to other Ghibli movies, which is a shame! It’s fun with an endearing cast and as always, great animation and music

Mushishi

Series, 2006, Japanese

10/10 three episodes in I knew it was going to be my favorite series ever

One of the few things I’ve seen I’ll describe as life-changing. It’s absolutely lovely but never toots its own horn about it. Humble, calming, emotional and surprisingly mature. It’s pretty impossible to binge due to how intense the experience is. I just want to walk in the forest now...

6/10 Dissapointing adaptation of a classic story

I read the manga for this when I was in middle school and remembered loving it. The animated version does an ok job of presenting the characters and worldbuilding and has some nice action scenes but overall looks really damn cheap and just. Not very good. Seeing I already knew most of the plot I did not have the element of discovery that made me marvel so much reading the original. It’s still a nice series but I really recommend reading it instead.

3/10. 1.5 being for the opening song alone

This show sucks ass if I hadn’t been watching this with my bestie I would have dropped it two episodes in. The art style is ugly the stories are always the same and the first season has a (later removed thank fucking god) LITERAL “erase any consequences” button as a plot device in every episode. If you watch it for one thing let it be the nostalgia factor of early 00s Vidya Game Plot

7/10. Impressive visuals and a poor story

I finally watched this, peer pressured by the load of gifsets on my dashboard! It’s a sweet movie with really impressive animation, sometimes a bit too flashy for my taste (the action sequences go so ham they become not very readable...) but the story was just ok? The setting is barely explained and you are instead bombarded with vague epicspeech about powers and stuff that made me fondly remember Kingdom Hearts lol but that asides it’s a really good time! I need to watch more Chinese movies the few I know are just delightfully off the shits in how they approach action and I love that

Hunter x Hunter

Series, 1999, Japanese

9/10. Superior to the recent one!

I first got introduced to the series via the 2011 one. Comparatively, the 99 series focuses way less on action and way more on the characters, which I love because that fits my personal preferences! Despite mediocre filler episodes and some weird slight pointless plot changes, what it changes from the original manga doesn’t have much of an impact on the characters. The animation quality isn’t always consistent including a huge art style change for an arc (???) but it’s overall pretty nice. The series really shines in the last arc it adapts.

Oban Star-racers

Series, 2006, Japanese/french

9/10 a lovely surprise

This series is completly obscure despite having been created by people famous for their other series (Cowboy Bebop, Code Lyoko that i can name) and it’s a crime! It’s a kids show but without being stupid about it who tells the story of an inter-planetary race. If you liked that one scene in the star wars prequels you know what I mean. It’s got surprisingly nice animation for a TV series, and some truly great character design. The art style is a bit unique in a not for everyone sense, but I didn’t mind it much. Watched this for the art style because I know it inspired Samurai Jack, and it delievered! I dont’ have much to say about this one, it’s a very simply film but it’s sweet. For my pirates out there if you want to find it in good quality with english subtitles it’s VERY hard to find. If you just want to see the looks of it, it’s on Youtube with portugese subs.

Watched this fully blind for the first time in an animated festival and rewatched it with friends. It’s a crime I never see anyone talking about it given the amount of whining I see about the lack of both adult animation and 2D movies? This film is a unique love letter to art in the form of a weird mix of charming crime story and psychological horror with amazing visuals. I recommend watching it blind and also buying it to show appreciation for how nice it is!!! WATCH THIS MOVIE...

If you can stomach intense stuff watch this. The visuals are incredibly unique and beautiful and under the jewel tones and art direction high takes it’s a really cool horror series. My only obstacle to enjoying it the first time I saw it was how dense it is - simply put, it’s so...culturally Japanese it’s not very accessible to me who doesn’t know anything about the culture? Watching it for the second time helped understanding the stories more!

9/10 but really close to ten. A great adaptation!

I’m a huge fan of the original comic so I entered this a biiiittttt suspicious it would suck but it was a really pleasant surprise! It has all the wonder and charm of the original and the animation was surprisingly good for the little budget. If you’re not familiar with the series, it’s a sort of geopolitical action/adventure movie but with it’s own really poetic vibe to it. It’s almost impossible to find online but happens to be fully on YouTube so go ham I guess?

It’s a masterpiece of escalating energy with the depth of a puddle and it fucking rules. It’s free on YouTube too so there really is no excuse to not watch it. Watched it for the first time on a huge cinema screen and despite this my second rewatch on my small laptop was as/even more enjoyable. If you watch this stoned with friends you might travel to another dimension

Oh my gosh ok I am about to go OFF about Frank and Ines ok,,, so like first of all I hated dash and ines bc he was just so pushy even after she kept saying no time and time again and then when she finally snapped and was like “I’m never going to date you” he got all pissed and acted like she was the one in the wrong forcing her to apologize. And then he left and she got together with pinky and I actually really liked them together bc she had already showed interest in him in the first season so even tho it was Pinky instigating lots of their interactions it didn’t feel like he was forcing her to do anything she didn’t want to do and I one hundred percent believe that if she had asked him to back off he would have BECAUSE....

In this season all of the ppl who went through to 1983 got their memories of time travel fully wiped so Ines didn’t remember Pinky at the beginning and he recognized that the best thing to do was to leave and not try and push her to remember him in order to keep her safe (so he left the show after like the first two episodes which I am v sad about 😔 he was my favourite time collector) but it wasn’t a huge huge deal until out of seemingly nowhere they just started to make frank and ines act like they like each other like?!!?????

Both of them JUST got out of a relationship (bc Thea went off on a world tour and Pinky just disappeared off the face of the earth apparently) and they’ve interacted before this season when they were all stuck in the bureau and they pretty clearly weren’t huge fans of each other right then

It’s just,,,, it was so out of nowhere with no basis whatsoever and it so clearly felt like, well we HAVE to have these characters in a relationship so let’s just throw them together bc why not and I’m so MAD bc it was basically Frank pushing himself on Ines the same way that all her other relationships started and the poor girl does not need to be thrown with any single guy that walks her way like,,, it had pretty much no bearing on the rest of the plot either it was literally just to have that ridiculous heterosexual ending where everyone needs to be paired up

INES DOES NOT NEED TO BE WITH A BOY TO HAVE VALUE GIVE HER A LEGIT LOVE INTEREST OR LET HER BE SINGLE

and then concerning nico he just felt like a very boring character. I was confused about which side he was on (since he worked for the bureau but then rebelled against his mom who was the head of the bureau but then was also still working with her???) which could have been good but I just really wasn’t invested in where he was going so it was more just annoying instead of intriguing

And also his kind of redemption came out of nowhere,,,,like he showed no signs of being good or feeling guilty and then suddenly he’s in love with Lena bc of course and so it’s that star crossed lover thing except rly he’s just kind of a dick and is the one who erased all their memories and Lena’s with Henry anyway so there ANOTHER pointless love triangle that I care about even less haha

Plus to replace max and Thea (and pinky) three of my favourite characters with him it just all kind of fell flat.

The Henry/Lena love interest was about as bland as you would think lol. Just lots of fighting and being jealous and not really acting like a couple and then getting mad at each other for spending time with someone else even tho they both say nothings going on and then kissing at the end and being like oh my gosh we’re finally together

Idk I feel like I was just so excited for the new season and then they got rid of so many characters that I didn’t know were being taken off and replaced them with ppl I didn’t care about but was somehow expected to care about the minute I saw them instead of giving them proper buildups. And then all the unnecessary romance stuff that cluttered the plot and had no real purpose. I was just very disappointed overall.

Ines and Jeffery has some cute friendship moments tho and that was nice to see. And the moments where Claudine and Lena were working together was pretty funny as well as getting to see Claudine trying to fit in to the present day but other than that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Okay so I'm doing a s1 rewatch and gonna talk to you about it because why not. I kind of didn't get into the show until s2 and sort of just skimmed through s1. So rewatching it, in 1x07 is it just me or is the whole Joe electrocuting himself to turn Cameron on (?!) both absolutely ridculous and like... super gross? Joe is what like 15? years older than Cameron who is what, 20 here? Ew? A woman supposedly wrote this episode but I bet a man wrote that bit. It's so very Male Bullshit™

CON’T: In fact all of Joe in season 1 (and lets face it all seasons?) is kind of Male Bullshit. But especially in season 1. Because like, canon Cameron is clearly a fucking mess who's vulnerable to his bullshit. But also some part of me feels like Real Cameron who didn't really come into existence until season 2... would not rly have been into him :P I can't fully grasp if she's meant to rly like him or if she's just with him for lack of other options/being lonely and bored.

A long time ago a fellow gay shipper joked on here/said something to the effect of, ‘remember when he literally had to shock her with a live current because that was the only way he could turn her on?’ If I’m being honest, I still have not recovered from this!

I suppose that whole scene is a matter of taste, for which there’s no real accounting (okay briefly - my official position on it is that some things just don’t work as well onscreen as they might on paper, even with actors like Mack and Lee), but to belatedly speak to your other points: I feel like the most critically productive way to read early H&CF is to view the acknowledged Male Bullshit™ as The Point. It’s not always clear that it’s the point, and that’s because, well, the creators didn’t know how to do what they were trying to do at the beginning! Fortunately, the network set them up with experienced producers who were able to see their vision, for a series about (‘about’) an antihero that’s about more than justifying and begging sympathy for his destructive behavior, and pity for the characters that become his collateral damage. I think, largely based on that pilot spec script that’s been floating around for a while, that the producers understood that the way to do that was to spend more time on the other characters and make it a true ensemble, and to make them smarter (if not sneakier) than the antihero. J*e and his machinations still kind of have to be the engine for the first seasons’ plot, because, well, that’s how the characters are: they’re all stuck, and they need this random, aggressive, (surprisingly genuinely?) sad bastard to push them to act. 

So, yes, there’s a huge age difference between Cameron and J*e, and he definitely scams his way into her college classroom because for his plan to work he needs a 22-year old coder who’s both naïve and a little wild, and who he presumably can manipulate. He absolutely knows what he’s doing, no matter how many people on this website refuse to see his actions clearly, and he largely succeeds at that for most of the season; he’s the main antagonist, and we’re supposed to be wary of him, and put off by all of this. Because, even though a lot of people want to ignore this, too, Cameron is naïve, and also legitimately emotionally compromised (yes, even with that tough front, people contain multitudes, and they can be deceptive), and it works on her. (I’m pretty sure I’ve said this here before, but you can actually see when it starts to work on her, it’s when they’re negotiating her salary, and he says, ‘Now you’re thinking like a professional.’ That gets to her.)

Which isn’t healthy or positive, but it is real. I think ‘like’ is a strong word for how Cameron feels about him, especially in the first half of season 1, but their connection is the real deal, even if it’s largely based on them both being isolated, and having complementary emotional dysfunction based on similar childhood traumas. They’re also drawn to each other’s expertise; Cameron makes her derisive and mostly deserved comments about ‘whatever it is that a product manager does,’ but she recognizes that he can sell and publicly promote an idea in a way that’s useful, and in a way that she can’t and won’t. (She says as much at COMDEX ’90.) 

And for as critical as I’ve been of how that relationship has been handled, I think all of that is pretty clear from the text? But the show doesn’t spell this out or spoon feed it to the viewer, so there is much room for willful/sexist/heteronormative misinterpretation. I don’t think all of the misinterpretation is willful though, people misunderstand power dynamics in relationships and excuse men’s intentional harm irl all the time, because that is sadly the cisheteropatriarchy we all live in.

And I was actually thinking of talking about this for Braven week when I saw the “when they became your otp” moment so, the question comes at a perfect time. It convinced me to actually type it out! 

To answer that question adequately- because I'm very wordy and incapable of answering quickly, watch me get off-topic under the cut as I try to walk you through my history of shipping on The 100. This is all a lot of honest rambles about what I shipped and why I stopped. 

Dear followers, if you ship B*llarke, don’t read this. It’s only going to upset you, so stay away :)  Also, Braven shippers, this post talks about B*llarke a lot. and about Raven x W*ck a bit And about internalized bias and things like that. Just so you’re warned :) it does talk about braven though oF COURSE

So how did I get into Ravenbell? To get there, I have to start with B*llarke because.... well, you’ll see. 

The thing is, like many others I think, I shipped B*llarke before even watching the show.

Gifsets of that season 2 hug were everywhere on my dash, and I was like: “oh my this is cute.” then I started watching the show, and while I fell in love with Raven at first sight, B*llarke had that enemies to lovers potential that kept me hooked.

They had fun chemistry in season 1. They started antagonistic then started liking each other more. They were the leads. It made... sense? And I genuinely liked them. So there I was, shipping it happily. Everyone shipped it, so it was on my dash all the time. It fueled my shipping, and I knew it was all leading to The Hug. 

Ravenbell was.... well. not even a thing if you looked at the fandom, judging by the people I was following. It was either Fl*arke or B*llarke. L*nctavia too. 

So Ravenbell flew past me. I enjoyed their interactions- definitely saw the sexual tension.

Hell, I will admit that when they hooked up in season 1, I felt lowkey threatened, as I think many B*llarke shippers did.

My threatening did not, however, transform into me hating Raven because I loved her a lot. She was my absolute favorite. People disliking her because of that thing honestly made me like her more out of spite- not that she needed it. My love for Raven Reyes knows no bounds.

And even then, I think I was kind of hoping something more would come from their hook-up- but I was still in B*llarke land then, so I both wanted it and I didn’t.

That’s the thing about me- honestly, I tend to pick a ship and it’s hard for me to get over it once I ship it. I’m less like this than I used to be, but yeah. I tended to hold on tight to ships

I did think, though, that maybe Ravenbell would go somewhere in season 2, after their late season 1 interactions. It kind of surprised me that it didn’t.  So season 1 happened, and then season 2 rolled around. I loved season 2 in many ways, but Raven’s general storyline in season 2 was very unsatisfying to me. Raven x W*ck was nice, at first. I wanted Raven to have a love interest that wasn't Finn. I enjoyed the banter- but then when it progressed, I found myself grimacing at Wick putting pressure on her. I was like “really man? She just lost the boy she loved forever, her family, can you chill?” I saw everyone being all heart eyes at that ship in the B*llarke tag, and I was wondering if there was something I’d missed. Because I wasn’t really into it.  I did notice, though, at the end of season 2, Bellamy saying “Is that Raven?” like he wanted to cry. It made my heart do a thing. But again, still in B*llarke land. I got a lot of feels at the end of the season. She kissed his cheek. I was crying.  Still firmly into B*llarke at this point. Even if the possibility of Cl*xa then highly interested me. 

But anyway. On to season 3.

Season 3 is when I stopped shipping B*llarke.

Mostly because season 3 started, iMO, sucking. I was angry at the Bell storyline. I was angry at how Cl*xa was handled, I was angry at the Lincoln death/Ricky Whittle on set drama... Season 3 nearly got me to quit the show tbh. 

So my B*llarke shipping was sucked into my frustration with the show. And I didn’t like the idea that L*xa was killed off to make way for B*llarke- I now realize that it wasn’t the case, but the way the fandom framed it... It turned me off the show, the ship, all of it. 

I also lost interest in Cl*rke as a character for many reasons that I won’t go into- my season 3 frustrations are never-ending tbh and somehow, when B*llarke reunited at the end of the season, it fell kind of flat to me? I was like: “but wait where’s that romantic chemistry I thought they had” (the answer was it probably wasn’t there in the first place but anyway i’m not here to throw shade)

anyway, my reaction was: “Huh. so I’m over b*llarke.” 

Also, as I got more frustrated with the show in season 3, I started going into “anti tags” and found meta that talked about several aspects (I think some of them were even written by you? I know I’d seen your name in tags before I followed you for Braven joy) such as the show’s racist patterns, etc.- and also, I distinctly remember reading a great piece of meta about how the show rarely lets characters of color interact without a white character present, and that.... got me. I was like: fuck that’s true. 

When I say season 3 sucked though, I want to make it clear that while it did IMO, it only... highlighted some of the problems that were here all along in the show. Honestly I’m really not proud of the way I missed - or ignored- some of the show’s patterns, and they really came to light in season 3. The fact that I missed those aspects is fully on me. A lot of viewers were aware of them before. Just not... me?  Wow am I getting off-topic. The question was about Ravenbell. Okay. Focus, Audrey, focus. 

I wasn’ t even going to watch season 4, at first, but my husband wanted to, so I knew I wouldn't be able to resist. I wasn’t really into the 100 then anymore tbh. 

Before season 4 rolled around though, I visited the Ravenbell tag. The reason is ridiculously personal and has, at its basis, NOTHING to do with Ravenbell themselves. A happy accident, really. 

To be completely honest, I started writing a book (wee!) where two main characters hook up and they look like Ravenbell a lot. Tall curly-haired boy, shorter dark-haired lady, both of them brown-skinned... so I wanted screenshots of them to make my own private edits for myself like the little goblin that I am- and looking for screenshots on google images led me to the Braven tag, and then I.... could not... get out.

Looking at the Ravenbell scenes in gifsets, looking at edits, honestly made me go: “........ huh. HUH. how come I don’t ship this more? They’re my favorite individually and usually, I ship my favorites together. Not always but often How come I broke my own pattern?” 

The question to how come I broke my own pattern probably has an answer that’s both obvious and shameful tbh. The fact that I didn’t ship Raven with Bell even if she was my favorite character, over Cl*rke, says a lot about how much TV structure and internalized shit influence us. I’m a lot more conscious of that than I used to be. I know you’re familiar with candyumbrella’s tobin structure posts- and honestly, misreading B*llarke as Tobin?

That was me. Me 1000000%. I can admit it freely because I’m super over it but that was the case. 

Probably the reasons the meta mentions- even if it wasn’t conscious on my part. I somehow- had this idea in my head that Bell*rke was the ship. That the romantic chemistry was there. That the storyline was going there. That they had the development, the attraction, etc. 

As it turns out.... well. Nope? 

Those Tobin metas also intensified my Braven shipping by 10000% since then but anyway

Really though, the braven tag and its contents - that I kept visiting for non-book-edit purposes- made me start shipping it. A lot. A lot-lot. Mostly because the more I looked at their pretty selves and thought about them, they made... sense?

The fact that I was super over B*llarke freed up the way for me to ship Braven. It sounds silly, really, but that's 1000% what happened. 

Anyway, by the start of season 4, Braven interacted.

I squealed.

I wanted more of them.

I kept visiting the tags. More and more and more. I rewatched some of their scenes and saw things I’d missed. I remembered how really, in season 1, it looked like something more would come from their season 1 scenes- until that was mostly dropped in season 2. And the writing for season 4 was more satisfactory to me, for the most part. There was more Raven. A LOT MORE RAVEN. So between my renewed fondness for the show, my heart exploding with feels over Raven Reyes all the time, my little heart fluttering over Bellamy Blake constantly, I went from “oh that would be rly nice if the show went there again” to “help I ship it so hard I would die for them” and honestly there’s no going back for me now.

I realized that not only was Ravenbell super based in canon, they made sense. They bring out some passion in each other that lacks in their interactions with other characters IMO. And honestly, after all the shit they went through, I want them to be loved and protected and treated well- and if you look at the show’s canon, IMO, that’s with each other. I’m not nearly as skilled with Braven meta as the rest of the fandom is, so I won’t bother explaining why I love them because honestly, the fandom’s said it all. And I can feel it in my chest now- they evoke the kind of love that B*llarke used to evoke for me, only even deeper because (no shade to anyone who likes Cl*rke ) I’ve always loved Raven much, much more than I like Cl*rke, even when the latter was in my top 5 favorite characters. The admiration I have for Raven Reyes knows no bounds, and god, Bellamy Blake, don’t get me started. Loving him has been a ride, because he has been through so much and grown so much and you know that meta, Raven Reyes as the secret hero of his development? I think about that every goddamn day.

And honestly, back in B*llarke days, I was annoyed with some of the fandom’s tendency to... reduce Bell or Raven to Cl*rke. I never liked the trend of making Raven out to be some sort of B*llarke cheerleader- and I think starting in season 2, I was a bit annoyed by the idea that everything Bell did or said was directly related to his love for Cl*rke. Even if I shipped it, that was... irksome, even if it took me a while to realize what bothered me. 

Honestly the cracks in my B*llarke shipping were probably there from the start but anyway. I still shipped for a loooooong time

I spent season 4 waiting for Braven to interact more, getting increasingly annoyed with Cl*rke, thirsting for Braven to interact ALONE- and then completely exploding when he offered to go get her and the hug and the scenes in the finale and gkljflkgjdlkjgdfkgjdflkjkldjflgjfdlgkjfdlkgjfdklgjfdklgjflgjd. Keysmash sums up my feelings efficiently. 

Honestly, I think it’s the Ravenbell tag that made me get into it before season 4 rolled around, and increasingly through the season. The gifsets, the metas, the everything- mostly because the tag helped me realize a lot of things that had happened in the first three seasons and that I’d missed because I was into another ship. Complete and utter tunnel-vision. 

And now, as I await season 5, I visit the tag all the time and read all the meta and look at their pretty faces and think daily about what a fool I was to miss that ship for such a long time. I honestly can’t believe myself  Anyway, if you read all that, thank you? I hoped you enjoyed my ramblings. (Also, this may sound like a silly question, but am I the only one who went from B*llarke to Braven? I feel like I can’t be, but you know, if anyone else ship-jumped, let me know so I can feel less alone and we can cry together about the foolishness of our youth)

anyways minhyuk is the literal sun???? ? hes always positive and happy and just the complete opposite of me in every way tbh,,,,i just rly love that abt him like no matter how many things get him down hes able to get back up and try again and keep going and keep a positive attitude and i know ive said this before but he genuinely inspires me to be a better person…..like im such a pessimistic person but i wanna be able to be more positive and radiate warmth he Never fails to cheer me up like watching videos of him being bubbly nd happy makes me so happy!!!!!!!!!!!!! What are they doing now?'". in this case, tommy and tuppence perhaps parallel sherlock and john, and seeing as how s4 scene ended in the middle of sherlock and john rushing off and in the middle of the case, it could seem applicable...so perhaps this is hinting that we won’t be getting a s5 since s4 wrapped things up, but that we will probably get to see The Lost Special as an update on john and sherlock (and rosie) and as an encore of sorts... -also there’s this ‘marple’ thing and i’m not entirely sure what it has to do with sherlock? someone explain?

i love her

hyper anxious kid who wants to fight monsters and play with swords rather than talk to anyone ever?? i LOVE her

and theN CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

not only do we see that she’s a rly good person despite her social skills being less than spectacular (see: ruby indulging jaune abt his sword and shield but still fumbling through the scenario, see: ruby befriending a boy who literally threw up on her sister’s shoe, see: ruby running off to be with her sister but still promising to catch up with jaune later despite knowing he’s not a gr8 fighter just bc he’s a “nice” guy who clearly needs a friend just as much as she does.........

this is like all in the first 2 or 3 eps and from memory so excuse me if i get anything wrong, but like my point is, we get a lot of good showing (for the time limit and compared to the rest of the show) that ruby is a good person. socially anxious yes and a lil hyper and childish but like, she’s 15 and she’s fighting bad guys. like hell, she even asks the shopkeeper dude if she can go after roman, or if he wants her to wait with him. likE WHAT A GOOD KID

she grows as a leader, which we see in her discussion with jaune in the hallway (remember when jaune actually was a foil for ruby bc he’s also got terrible social skills and he can’t fight or lead for shit?? yeah me neither)

so like yes, v1 left a lot of questions, but ultimately i watched and rewatched it like a hundred times cuz i loved that team and i could put aside a lot of the problems bc of a limited time per episode, and like. i loved. those. girls. ruby included. like, i am ruby. her personality in v1? me

ruby. doesnt care abt her team at all anymore?? doesn’t check in with them when they’re upset? like very visibly upset or shaken? just plops down with a happy ‘nope’ when yang asks if oobleck has questioned her motives for being a huntress and moves on??

like ok. i could forgive this if it were just blake and weiss. ruby’s social skills, as we know, aren’t gr8. but like. that’s yang. her sister, her rock at beacon. being upset. and im supposed to believe ruby doesnt ask her if she’s alright? or even look like she notices anything is wrong?? like ruby has had her own confidence issues in the past, surely she should be able to see it in her sister.

and then she runs off again and who rly cares abt the end of v2 bc it didn’t matter at all

(also. the dog is stupid. im sorry but that dog has more characterization than the 4 girls combined and i can’t. stand it.)

anyway, this is where ruby’s character literally started unraveling for me. this has just. made me mad for a long time (and suggests a very definitive imbalance in yang and ruby’s relationship. which i would happily believe tbh (cuz i love angst), if we had any backstory with them growing up other than 1 line from yang abt tai shutting down, suggesting (tho not proving or showing) that yang had to take on a mothering role for ruby, which is why she’s hyper-tuned to her sister’s feelings and needs but ruby isn’t the same to her cuz yang is her rock, not the other way around

god i could go on and on and on abt how dynamic this sorta situation would make their relationship, bc of how guilty ruby feels for yang always being there for her, but not feeling like yang needs her the same way, ruby feeling like the burden to her sister, holding her back, which would be an awesome contrast to v4 rn

or ruby always assuming yang is okay cuz yang /is/ always okay in her eyes, always wiping away her tears, never shedding any of her own in front of ruby, ruby not realizing yang is hurting too......)

but let’s not get carried away. that doesn’t happen. we have no backstory for them, no idea what their relationship is like. all we know is that ruby is supposed to be all about saving people and looking out for everyone, especially her teammates, cuz she wants to do good in this world

but she can’t even tell when her own sister is upset.

my favorite season! tho honestly maybe tied with v1 bc jaune and neptune have soured a lot for me at this point

but a good plot (full of plotholes but whatever i forgive it, things are happening)

it takes a dark twist, but like. im here for that. give me more angst

the scene in the dorm with the whole team and yang is a good one. im not just saying that cuz my shipping heart will never forget weiss blowing up at blake for not believing yang’s word (again, somebody pls give me a soundclip of weiss saying ‘she’s hot’ bc weiss literally says that yang is ‘hot-headed, not ruthless’ and if u cut out everything after headed, you get weiss saying yang is hot. pls)

anyway, i guess if yang is literally crying ruby can tell she’s upset? good job little sister u did it

ruby sleuths around for awhile, gets ‘traumatized’ by penny’s death, kicks ass fighting, all p good

abuse mention below

(i have, for the purposes of this post, left out my feelings abt ruby’s reactions to winter slapping weiss. arguments from when this occurred made me nearly delete my blog bc i was just. so angry. i consider what winter did abusive, for a variety of reasons i’ve gone into before; however, i love winter as a character, i don’t think she’s being abusive on purpose, or even realizes its abuse. in fact, i dont think weiss thinks it is either, cuz at this point its just a way of life. i think not calling what winter did abusive subsequently means ignoring that winter was also probably abused, and that’s where she learned to treat people this way, and why she thinks its okay to do that to a person, even if you love that person very much. i also would like to venture that a lot of people who have been abused were made seriously uncomfortable by the behavior winter exhibited, and whether or not it was intended to be abusive doesn’t change the impact it had on people watching.)

so i’ll stow my feelings away on ruby’s reaction to that cuz that was a Bad time in the fandom but im sure you can guess my thoughts

ruby v3 continued

mostly the rest of this volume is just. ruby left. like what the fuck

at this point we had no real indication of how much time has passed. we have no idea if ruby’s tried reaching out to yang after her one failed attempt. we don’t see her interact with yang at all after that, we just see her walk out the door?

again, im mad

there was so much potential for actual discussions and bonding time but nope, we’ve skipped over all that

(i know this post is about ruby but can i just also talk abt how toxic qrow is to yang here? yang’s words to ruby are exactly what qrow’s had been to her, ‘sometimes bad things just happen’ and then they stay that way, they don’t get better. like qrow. u need to up ur comfort game like, a lot)

anyway. that’s where we left and at this point. still bitter abt v2, i’ve been that way since it happened, it isnt going away. and then ruby just...leaves

which brings me back to ruby not really getting any characterization, kinda de-evolving really??

like until qrow (which yeah, v4, but gimme a sec) but until qrow gets hurt, we don’t rly see her ‘care’ a whole lot about other people the way she says she does. with the promises to qrow about stopping cinder and her constant goody-two-shoes speeches which at this point are just annoying and cliche and telling instead of showing

we don’t see her concerned about penny or pyrrha for more than 2 seconds, we don’t see her concerned about yang for more than half a scene, and we just. don’t get any sense she is seriously attached to anyone at this point, cuz she literally does NO MOURNING. EVER.

im getting ahead of myself, so v4 here we come

ruby v4

ok so. i left off with ruby not mourning for anyone. no mourning for ren when he discusses his parent’s literal deaths. no mourning for pyrrha, just ruby watching jaune mourn pyrrha?? for some reason?

no sensitivity to jaune mourning pyrrha (which again, i don’t care about jaune, but like. come on ruby). what im referring to is actually something someone in another post pointed out abt ruby making fun of jaune’s bunny pajamas which he got from sending in boxtops from pumpkin pete’s, and how that cereal actually kinda has emotional context behind it now, and also. back to de-evolving ruby’s character, why is ruby laughing at him?? shouldn’t she have pulled out her own bunny pajamas and been like ‘omg same??’ she’s exactly the kind of person who would do that but like. ok

and then qrow gets injured and ruby makes another preachy speech about nobody getting hurt on her watch and im. tired. cuz she really doesnt care after anyone does die on her watch. we have never seen her caring extend past a single episode. and im. so. tired.
