Jasper Johns experimented with seriality, materiality, and appropriation and helped bridge Abstract Expressionism with the modernist art movements that followed, including Pop Art, Minimalism and Conceptualism. Johns often pushed the same motif across various media to explore new possibilities for the image. In his famous paintings of the American flag, Johns referenced both concrete iconography and his own previous versions of artworks. Abstract hatchings are another signature motif for Johns. On paper and canvas, these marks highlight the artist’s conscious control of gesture and form: a major divergence from the bravura brushstrokes of Johns’s Ab-Ex predecessors. Johns spent semesters at the University of South Carolina and Parsons School of Design before dropping out and joining the army. In the 1950s, he was part of New York’s avant-garde arts scene alongside longtime friend, lover, and collaborator Robert rauschenberg. He has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Tokyo, Cologne, and San Francisco, among other cities. His work belongs in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art N.Y., the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Tate Gallery and Nationalmuseum  in Stockholm.

Mostra a cura di Flavio Lattuada in collaborazione con Roberto Guffanti Gennaio - Febbraio 2012. L'esposizione raccoglie una trentina di opere dagli anni '70 ad oggi e una accurata selezione di documenti e manoscritti che introducono e spiegano la poetica dell'artista e la sua evoluzione.

Nasce a Napoli nel 1935. Ancora giovane, si trasferisce a Nizza, dove continua a lavorare, dopo aver vissuto in Turchia, Egitto e Svizzera. Nel 1954 apre un negozio di dischi usati che, nel 1959, trasforma in un luogo di incontro per persone che desiderano esporre e indagare oggetti nuovi. Negli anni cinquanta inizia la sua produzione pittorica segnata dall'astrattismo, poi nel decennio successivo si avvicina agli ambienti del Nouveau¬Rèalisme, soprattutto a Arman e a Spoerri. Nel 1962 conosce e inizia a frequentare George Maciunas, figura di spicco del gruppo Fluxes, di ispirazione neo-Dada, di cui Vautier diviene membro e sostenitore, condividendo quella filosofia e quella poetica che identifica con l'equazione arte e vita. Negli anni ottanta, passata l'ondata concettuale, inventa per la nuova tendenza pittorica emergente in Francia il termine "Figuration Libre" e introduce nei suoi lavori una componente figurativa ironico-grottesca. In quest'arco di tempo la sua attività non si ferma e prosegue senza soste: vive quindici giorni nella vetrina della One Gallery di Londra, organizza il Festiva] Fluxus, fonda il Théatre Total, tiene performances come Public (in cui la sua azione consiste appunto nel fissare il pubblico), espone una portinaia alla Galerie Zunini di Parigi, gira un film che lo riprende nell'atto d'insultare gli spettatori, pubblica riviste, scrive un volume di interventi teorici, apre una galleria intitolata ai suoi figli , "Malabar et Cunegonde".
