To be fooled. This is the honest premise of this non-exhibition, which chronicles Sebastien Pesot's unsuccessful attempts to bring SPUNKT ART NOW to fruition at Howl! Happening in New York. Originally scheduled for April 3, 2020, the event will be postponed again and again, then cavalierly canceled by the administrative management of Howl! Like many projects swept away by the pandemic, the lack of consideration for the deal and the accumulation of disappointments pushes Pesot to reverse the faux pas. Thus, he explores the limits of fake news by creating a real fake New York exhibition... presented on April 3, 2022. Autopsy of a hoax? Construction of a sweet revenge? Documentation of indignation? All and none of these at the same time. The ease of faking and accessing information makes our ability to distinguish truth from falsehood more and more complex. If the hoax has always insinuated itself into artistic practices in order to destabilize, it also seems to contribute to legitimize what is apparently false. Let us think in particular of the consecration of Duchamp's Fontaine, which from a hoax redefines the parameters of the work of art in the 20th century. In this sense, the New York exhibition may have really existed... Era of Post-truth or Infocalypse? Repoussé à maintes reprises, puis complétement annulé par la direction administrative du Howl!, le projet rend compte des démarches infructueuses, qui ont mené Pesot à créer une fausse exposition new-yorkaise. Autopsie d’un canular? Construction d’une douce vengeance? Documentation d’une indignation? Tout et rien de cela à la fois. À l’instar d’une quête SPUNKT, portée avec cran et détermination, Pesot décide d’aller au bout de la démarche et transforme son vain combat en processus artistique. Il multiplie alors les démarches, construit les preuves et persiste à semer le doute étape par étape auprès des médias américains. Ainsi, l’exposition rassemble et étale les traces de ce qui n’a pas eu lieu et de ce qui aurait pu être. À mi-chemin entre l’exposition documentaire et l’acte performatif, les indices mis en scène offre une incursion au cœur de la dérision, permettent de boucler la mésaventure et ouvrent une réflexion autour de la circulation de l’information et de son (faux) pouvoir.
