NEW IN THE BOOKSHOP: THE USES OF PHOTOGRAPHY : ART, POLITICS, AND THE REINVENTION OF A MEDIUM (2016) • The Uses of Photography examines a network of California artists whose experiments with photography during the turbulent, transitional decade of the 1970s opened the medium to a profusion of new strategies and subjects. Working within the framework of Conceptual art, these artists introduced urgent social issues and themes of everyday life into the seemingly neutral territory of photography, producing works that took on hybrid forms, from books and postcards to video and text-and-image installations. • Tracing a crucial history of photoconceptual practice, The Uses of Photography focuses on an artistic community that formed in and around the young UC San Diego, founded in 1960, and its visual arts department, founded in 1968. Artists such as Eleanor Antin, John Baldessari, Allan Kaprow, Martha Rosler, and Allan Sekula employed photography and its expanded forms as a means to dismantle modernist autonomy, to contest notions of photographic truth, and to engage in political critique. The work of these artists shaped emergent accounts of postmodernism in the visual arts and their influence is felt throughout the global contemporary art world today. Published in association with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. • Edited by Jill Dawsey Texts by Judith Rodenbeck, Benjamin Young , David Antin, and Pamela M. Lee Artists include David Antin, Eleanor Antin, John Baldessari, Jean-Pierre Gorin, Helen Mayer Harrison, Newton Harrison, Louis Hock, Allan Kaprow, Fred Lonidier, Babette Mangolte, Martha Rosler, Allan Sekula, Lorna Simpson, Elizabeth Sisco, Phel Steinmetz, Carrie Mae Weems. • Available via our website and in the bookshop. • #worldfoodbooks #theusesofphotography #davidantin #eleonorantin #babettemangolte #martharosler #fredlonidier #johnbaldessari #gaag #allankaprow #helenmayerharrison #newtonharrison #lornasimpson #allansekula #carriemaeweems #louishock #jeanpierregorin #phelsteinmetz #elizabethsisco (at WORLD FOOD BOOKS)

My quarterly photo essay #Ensayo # 2 is out thanks to everybody involved @studio_hans_nyc design by @studioglendor @basilfaucher Text below by @ivansikic #Happening inspired by #AllanKaprow Limited edition of 100. . . As a follow up to Ensayo 1, Hans Neumann turns his attention to a new medium for Ensayo 2: a happening. Neumann’s personal immigration story, combined with the current political context in the USA (where he lives), is also the catalyst for the second chapter in this series. For Ensayo 2, Neumann collaborates with another Hans (Hans Maharawal), who despite being born and raised in New York, is also of immigrant descent. Through this collaboration, the premise for Ensayo 2 is a straight forward one: build a ladder and use it to climb buildings or walls in and around Brooklyn, NY. Although the main action of the happening is the building of the ladder, and the use of it to climb over, the main intent of this work is the collaboration between two individuals: an immigrant and a non-immigrant, to build something that will help them overcome something bigger than them using a self made tool, as a symbol of introspection and self fulfillment.

. #sanat #happening #happeningnow #art #allankaprow #expremental #empresyonizm #body #breath #mind https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs3vEXmhqI5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=szs0syiou23

BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: EXPLOSION! : Painting As Action (2012) After the second world war, a number of painters in different parts of the world began to attack painting’s fundamental assumptions in ways that were at once both aggressive and playful. The creative act itself was as important as the painting that resulted from it. In this borderland between painting and performance, chance or the spectator were often recruited as co-creators of the work. In recent years, interest in performance art has increased, and with it interest in its roots. Explosion! Painting as Action explores the connections and cross fertilisations between painting, performance and conceptual art. Featured artists include the Japanese Gutai group, Lynda Benglis, Cai Guo-Qiang, Allan Kaprow, Yves Klein, Rivane Neuenschwander, Jackson Pollock, Carolee Schneemann, Shozo Shimamoto and Yoko Ono. Published to accompany the exhibition at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, 2 June – 9 September 2012. Available in our bookshop and via the website. WE OPEN THIS FRIDAY 12-7 PM. #worldfoodbooks #mordernamuseet #painting #allankaprow (at WORLD FOOD BOOKS)
